One and only one reason.......2007-06-16
There is mainly one reason to buy this movie, the action is so/so, the plot is grossly contrived, but the saving grace for this film is in the underwater camera work. By that I am referring exclusively to the way the cameraman follows Jessica Alba around from behind underwater as she swims. There is no nudity, there needs to be no nudity, this is simply a film about the hottest woman in known existences butt. Its super high def Jessica Alba, you'll be on the slow mo button half the film anyway so I doubt you'll notice an actual story.
A Good Action Adventure Film.......2007-03-10
I enjoyed this alluring film.I found it to be very interesting and thoroughly engrossing. The cast (Paul Walker, Josh Brolin and Scott Caan) was refreshing. The score composed by Paul Haslinger was very effective. Shades of Peter Benchley's THE DEEP seem to glitter in the waters here.
Good.......2007-02-28
I liked this movie. I am a Jessica Alba fan and mainly got it for that reason. The movie is kind of flaky in the sense that the storyline is not original nor is it necessarily a great story. It did have enough action and Jessica Alba to make it a good movie though. I would watch it again, though its not going to make my top 50 movies. Worth it for a bargain price.
Jessica Alba looking good in Blu-Ray!.......2006-12-14
Story Synopsis:
If you are a clothing minimalist, Into The Blue is for you. With the azure skies and crystal waters of the Bahamas their backyard, Jared (Walker) and his girlfriend, Sam (Alba), enjoy a peaceful existence...and incredible tans. But, with the arrival of Sam's childhood friend, Bryce (Caan), and his girlfriend Amanda (Scott), and the subsequent discovering of a possible sunken treasure, greed rears its head jeopardizing not only their friendship, but their very lives.
Disc Picture:
The 2.32:1 MPEG-2 Blu-ray Disc picture looks great, overall. There is a purposely oversaturated look to the picture, with blown-out whites and colors. The underwater color schemes seem to really look good as well. The picture quality is outstanding, with beautiful locales, which is improved of course by the presence of Jessica Alba.
Soundtrack:
The linear PCM 5.1-channel soundtrack uses a broad front stage, good surround integration, and well-recorded dialogue to deliver an enjoyable audio experience. Deep bass is not very prevalent, making the soundtrack sound a bit thin.
Underwater Thriller.......2006-11-17
Jared (Paul Walker) works as a scuba teacher but dreams of being a treasure hunter who finds a gold-laden shipwreck. His girlfriend Sam (Jessica Alba) supports him in all that he does and truly loves him. When Jared's brother Bryce (Scott Caan) shows up with a new girlfriend Amanda (Ashley Scott) luck seems to go their way. They have access to a boat and have found a few scattered remnants of a wreck that might be the pirate ship that's supposed to be the mother lode of treasure ships. Unfortunately, a plane with cocaine has crashed into the ocean nearby and complicates the situation when the drug runners come looking for their lost product. Further trouble happens as everyone argue how best to proceed with the search for the treasure ship, and what to do about the cocaine.
John Stockwell directed the movie and does an amazing job of shooting eye-catching imagery that's stunning on the Blu-ray presentation. I found myself getting sidetracked more than once by the seascape captured in the camera lens, and the fact that I noticed it at all while Jessica Alba was swimming around in a bikini is saying a lot. The audio portion of the movie is packaged uncompressed, allowing the film to take full advantage of a surround sound system and throughly wow the audiophile.
Although INTO THE BLUE doesn't go anywhere spectacular for the experienced moviegoer (films like THE DEEP and A SIMPLE PLAN offer similar plot lines and conflict), it does deliver a very watchable story. The added bonus of the incredible underwater imagery and the impeccable sound system is worth getting the movie in Blu-ray if you don't already have it on DVD.
As a thriller, INTO THE BLUE works. And it's a great buddy flick. Not exactly date material, but if you're with someone who likes action and tension, this will fit the bill nicely.

Stunning tropical scenery and gorgeous athletic movie stars may not make a movie great, but they sure don't hurt. Jared (Paul Walker, The Fast and the Furious) dreams of finding sunken treasure and making millions, but his girlfriend Sam (Jessica Alba, Fantastic Four, Sin City) is content with their poor but idyllic life in the Bahamas. Still, when they find artifacts from a 19th century pirate ship, she gets caught up in the excitement--until they also find a crashed plane full of smuggled cocaine. Naturally, someone's going to want that cocaine back... From there, Into the Blue is a surprisingly well-plotted action movie, unpredictable in its specifics if familiar in its broader outlines. Even more pleasant, the action itself stays plausible and genuinely engaging throughout. Jared seems able to hold his breath for a preternaturally long time, but aside from that the movie is meticulous about the dangers and threats the characters face and is all the stronger for it. Add to this its unabashed ogling of Alba and Walker (both of whom are astonishing physical specimens) and you have a solid romp. Also featuring Scott Caan (Ocean's Eleven), Tyson Beckford (Biker Boyz), and Josh Brolin (Flirting With Disaster) as a slimy rival treasure hunter. --Bret Fetzer

Cussler Lite.......2007-09-04
Sometimes this film reminds one of a Clive Cussler novel, having many of the main ingredients, which include sunken cargo, deep sea diving, and some corruption on the high seas. Paul Walker and Jessica Alba are okay, but really seem to garner roles such as these more for their looks than any type of specific talent within their overall acting ability. In the end it could be chalked up to be a popcorn thriller, but it might be better if the same kind of plot and theme was mixed up with a more serious collection of actors and actresses.
Jessica Alba.......2007-09-03
If you are a diver or a Jessica Alba fan this is the movie for you. Great dive scenes.

Great Movie and Cinematography.......2007-08-14
The acting and Cinematography are top notch. The story line is realistic and believable. Jessica Alba is HOT!
3 and 1/2 stars.......2007-08-11
OK this may not be the best movie but I was suprised how much I like it. Beautiful water and women. I've see worst story lines, this wasn't too bad. When I first got the movie, people were teasing but then ended up watching the whole movie with me to the end so its not that bad... Just my .02
..........2007-08-04
People are giving this movie waaaay too much credit. So it has Jessica Alba in it. So what. If I wanted to see a beautiful body I'd pick up a copy of my roommate's Maxim magazine. The gorgeous ocean shots? Well... it reminded me that I really need to subscribe to National Geographic already. While those two features made the movie vaguely tolerable, I'm certainly not going to applaud it for it and bestow pity stars upon it.
There is so little actual plot in this movie that they had to resort to long, pointless shots. The ones that stick out in my mind are when we see the two main characters frolicking in the ocean in the beginning of the movie for just around five minutes. At least that one was kind of visually appealing. Later on there is a party scene and I swear we fast-forwarded through at least two minutes of pointless parying. Not even the punches thrown really factor into the ending at all.
The characters are completely shallow and one dimensional. The only reason I was rooting for the main character was because Sam liked him. Otherwise he could have died and I would not have minded one iota. The only real reason I cared about Sam was because she was the beautiful Jessica Alba. (Although her consistent refusal to ignore her morals was pretty endearing also... although I found myself disappointed when she came back. Or, more accurately, at the reason she came back.)
The acting is basically atrocious.... although I suspect that considering the awful dialog that was written for them it would have been hard to come across as realistic. Sadly, the film would have probably actually WORKED best as a silent film... the plot was simplistic enough that it could have been conveyed without actual dialog. Just give us the kind of bar piano that accompanies the Charlie Chaplain silent films and I could almost see this becoming a three star work of art.

An Interview with Blue Water, White Death Filmmaker Valerie Taylor
There are a few scary moments in the film, of course, but was there any one particular moment you recall when you really thought someone was going to get hurt?
Yes, when we first left the cages, there were over 100 big potentially dangerous sharks around us all in a feeding pattern. I thought "this is madness , one of us could get bitten. I said to Peter you go out first and if you make it I will come out after you." "watching Peter leave the cage by himself was both fascinating and fearful". I think that was my most frightened moment. I guess no one likes to see a friend in what is a very dangerous situation. Surprisingly when I swam out and joined him there was no fear just a huge excitement.
Jaws came out a few years after this, and of course Benchley was inspired by Blue Water, White Death. How did you feel about that and its portrayal of sharks as man-eating monsters?
Jaws was a fictitious film about a pretend shark. It was the same as a gorilla destroying the building in King Kong. Just a story. I do not know why it affected people the way it did. People loved the gorilla and hated the shark. Universal had us going around the US doing TV and radio interviews talking about sharks and how sharks did not think or behave like the fictitious beast in Jaws. I guess it is the fear of the unknown. Sharks are not well understood. They live in an alien environment. Gorillas live in ours. We understand them better. Once you understand an animal it becomes less fearful.
Do you have one particularly interesting memory from this adventure that's etched in your mind? What was the greatest part of this whole adventure?
Absolutely. Diving with the oceanic white tips in the open ocean while they were feeding on the whale. No one had ever done anything like this before and no one will ever do it again. It was the greatest, most exciting few weeks in my life. I would pay to do it again. Sheer unadulterated adventure. A trip back in time to a world unchanged in several million years. Blue Water, White Death was a gift which at the time I was unaware of. The greatest part of the whole adventure was, quite simply, the adventure.
What do you hope people watching this film for the first time today will get out of it?
The same as they did when it first came out. It has not dated. It is an exciting and true undertaking such as few people are ever lucky enough to experience. No one ever asked us to act a part. Jim Lipscomb, the above water cameraman, was incredible the way he followed us around carrying that big 35-mm Arriflex on his shoulder. We became used to him and his camera but he was always there recording everything we did. It is a great pity that all the outtakes are lost. There is a second story just in what never appeared in the final production.
Did this expedition and your experience swimming with great whites change your life in any significant way?
We had worked with Great Whites before. It was the Oceanic sharks that changed how I looked at dangerous sharks and it was the wonderful people I was so fortunate to be working with that gave us friendships that endure to this day that were most significant to me. However, I guess it was the original story about hunting for the biggest Great White that gave me these memories, so Great Whites have enriched my life. Also Ron's filming of these wonderful sharks opened the way for us to work on Jaws, Jaws 2, and Orca. I guess swimming with Great Whites did make a big difference to the lives of both of us. We still work with Great Whites but we will never be able to dive with hundreds of big sharks feeding on a whale carcass again, nobody will. Thirty eight years ago, before the impact of computer technology we lived in a different world. Today Blue Water, White Death could probably be produced in a computer.
Can you talk a bit about the filming technology of that time and how challenging it was to film underwater?
I did not do any underwater filming. That was Ron Taylor, Stan Waterman and Peter Gimbel. They were shooting on 35-mm film in the Techniscope format which is very wide screen. I was just a female shark wrangler. I also did a lot of the underwater still photography. However watching the problems the underwater cinema-photographers had to overcome, I was always relieved when all the cameras worked and no great sequences were missed because of camera failure. It was not a filming job where any missed action could be repeated.

At long last it is here - the movie that started them all.......2007-09-08
I remember seeing this when it first came out and have waited years to see it again. I have been a diver for 20 years. This is one of those movies that started it all. The stars of the movie, Stan Waterman, Peter Gimbel, and the Taylor's are icons in the diving and underwater film making business. This is the first movie of Great White sharks and the lengths to which these people went to film them are astounding. These adventurers went out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, parked themselves next to a sperm whale carcass, and got up close and personal with large oceanic sharks at feeding time. They also went to the Hermes wreck at 180 feet and off the coast of Dangerous Reef in the Sourthern Ocean.
- no dive computers, no DAN to evac you out, and never quite knowing what to expect. This is a true life adventure caught on tape when diving really was by the seat of your pants. If you are a diver or adventurer you must see this film. If you like the film buy the book that documents the adventure - Blue Meridian - The Search for the Great White Shark by Peter Matthiessen
OPEN OCEAN SWIMMING WITH OCEANIC WHITETIPS!.......2007-08-15
I just watched this movie for the first time and I must say i was amazed! This documentary by Peter Gimbel follows his crew to exotic locations including South Africa, Madagascar, Ceylon and Australia looking to be the first to film the Great White shark in its own world. The footage is fantastic with some of the most harrowing moments ever shot on film. Truly the moment where one by one the divers exit the safety of their cages to film dozens of feeding oceanic whitetips is unprecedented and unlikely to be repeated again. I couldn't believe my eyes as the Taylors(Ron & Valerie) and Peter Gimbel continuously prodded away the inquisitive sharks while Stan Waterman filmed the breathless action. When the crew travels to Dangerous Reef,Australia and meets the Great White, the results are spectacular. Never before had a Great White been filmed in its own environment and the pulse-pounding work of these underwater pioneers is priceless. A great purchase for all shark enthusiasts or action fans this DVD comes with several extra features including a reunion of the crew members who reminisce fondly of their great adventures beneath the waves. A MUST HAVE!

this dvd edition is very good !!
Absolutely superb!!.......2007-08-06
I'd been waiting to see BWWD since 1971. Tried to get a VHS copy but failed. Now the DVD is out and a copy appeared in my mailbox, having pre-ordered several months ago. The movie itself is every bit as exciting as I remembered it. My wife, who is a also a diehard scuba diver and hadn't seen it before, agreed it's top notch. The real bonus is the high quality of the digital transfer. Every bit as clear as the original, with stunning colors and lighting to match. What a pleasure to watch. There is also a bonus feature on a get-together with some of the divers, including the Taylors and Stan Waterman.
It's baaack!.......2007-07-02
An incredible documentary that pioneered underwater filmmaking- Crazy to think that this was Benchley's inspiration for Jaws, and that it's FINALLY coming to DVD this month!

Deep Blue is a compelling BBC documentary that introduces viewers to some of earth's most mysterious ocean creatures. Three years in the filming, the breathtaking cinematography of Deep Blue (all of which originally appeared in the BBC series The Blue Planet - Seas of Life), combined with an excellent musical score and the sparse narration of Pierce Brosnan, is both awe inspiring and moving. Intimate and unique footage of sea life includes an innovative under-the-ice view of penguins propelling themselves out of the water as captured by a newly invented pole camera. Cutting-edge submarine technology allows the exploration of the deepest reaches of the sea where alien looking, jelly-like creatures flourish in a world of immense pressure and constant darkness. Perhaps the most peculiar setting is the Marianas Trench where deep mid-ocean ridges regularly erupt and spew hot water and poisonous gasses into the water while sea life inexplicably flourishes on the underwater chimneys. Rare footage of a polar bear hunting beluga whales and orca whales ravaging a sea lion and attacking a gray whale cub is graphic and disturbing, but lends a sense of a eons-old natural hierarchy. While the scarcity of narration in the main film sometimes leaves the viewer hungry for information, the 50-minute "making of" feature is packed with logistical and technical details. The segment also conveys the entire crew's firm commitment to creating a complete ocean portrait with the goal of engaging people with the creatures of the ocean. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Beautiful Images.......2007-05-29
This is not a hard core documentary that satisfies a hunger for learning. Instead, it is an appetizer to whet the appetite. It is survey of the polar environments and the lifeforms that inhabit them. The video is stunning and the narration is adequate. For young people, it will be quite a treat. For those hungering for more information, they will not find it here. That does not stop the enjoyment, however. It is well done.

"We have walked on the moon and continue to push the open boundaries of space. Yet it is the mysteries of the ocean that continue to elude us"
The above is what the narrator (Pierce Brosnan) says at the end of this mesmerizing "cinematic masterpiece" that comes from the creators of the landmark BBC series "The Blue Planet." This movie is an exploration (mostly underwater) into the secret lives of sea creatures.
Generally, this film begins at the ocean beach and moves to the open ocean. From there, we are taken to the Earth's poles to see "the frozen ocean" and then finally to the dark ocean depths to view an "alien world" where life (that's never been captured on film) has adapted.
This film is a visual feast. There is minimal narration. I appreciated the scarce narration since I found that the visually stunning images speak for themselves. The stirring background music adds to the viewer's visual experience.
I recommend also viewing "The Making of Deep Blue" fifty-minute DVD extra. You will hear about all the technical challenges and risks that were taken involved with this documentary. (In fact, I appreciated the film even more after viewing this extra.) Besides technical information, I found that there was additional interesting information not included by the narrator of the main feature.
Finally, there were two problems I had with this movie. First, it is rated "G." Because this film shows some images that may be disturbing to the very young, I feel it should have been thus rated "PG." Second, the DVD case shows a picture of only penguins. However, the film features many other marine creatures from whales and dolphins to crabs and jellyfish.
In conclusion, viewing this film is a unique experience--"a remarkable, jaw-dropping experience!!"

Fantastic Documentary!!!.......2007-04-24
As a nature film lover I give this film 5 stars! From the soundtrack to the deeply beautiful cinematography everything about "Deep Blue" is amazing. Stunning images of natural beauty are presented as a feast for the eyes. The many facets of life that live in and around the oceans of the world are the main characters of this film. Many animal species are depicted- from penguins to wales to polar bears. Many creatures of the deep sea have never been captured on film before!
Thanks to the efforts of the creators of "Deep Blue" these invisible wonders can now be enjoyed in your own living room! One of our favorite movies!
As a movie fan I have to give this film 2 thumbs up, way up!
Great Movie for all ages!.......2007-03-15
We purchased this movie because we saw it on National Geographic television. The movie is amazing and the photographers have done shots that we have never seen before. The movie makes you feel good and leaves you wanting more to watch. They are so clever with the cameras and have gone above and below the surface of the water to bring us the best nature movie we have seen in a long time. We would reccommend this for a friends and family movie night and you will be amazed.
DVD Deep Blue.......2007-03-15
This is undoubtedly one of THE most beautiful nature films I have ever seen. There is a minimum of speaking and a maximum of viewing. Very tastefully done. Just beautiful!

Deep Blue Sea: Music From The Motion Picture
ASIN: B00002E233
Release Date: 1999-12-07 |
Amazon.com
With a voracious trio of mako sharks wreaking havoc, Deep Blue Sea dares to up the ante on Jaws, but director Renny Harlin trades the nuanced suspense of Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster for the trickery of the digital age. In other words, why build genuine terror when you can show ill-fated humans getting torn into bloody chunks? The aforementioned makos have been lab rats in an effort to harvest a miracle cure for Alzheimer's disease from the brains of sharks, but the research has an unfortunate side effect: the sharks get smarter, and they're determined to break out of Aquatica, the deep-sea complex where they've been penned.
Model-actress Saffron Burrows plays the researcher; Thomas Jane pulls double-duty as shark expert and action hunk; Samuel L. Jackson's the corporate sponsor who chooses the worst time for an Aquatica tour; and rapper LL Cool J is nicely cast as Aquatica's cook and comic relief. Michael Rapaport, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Stellan Skarsgård round out the cast, most of whom are turned into shark food as the makos turn Aquatica into a floating junkyard. Harlin takes devilish pleasure in providing sudden, unexpected shocks--no small feat in such a derivative thriller--and as a series of action set-pieces, Deep Blue Sea never disappoints. It's inevitable that Burrows should end up in her underwear like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but even then the movie offers a credible reason for the strip-down; that Deep Blue Sea can be simultaneously ridiculous and sensible is just another one of its shlocky charms. --Jeff Shannon

Best "monster"-movie in a long time.......2007-08-23
After "jaws" there was long time nothing in cinema in this genre of shark or monster movies with an interesting story and enough suspense.
I am a big fan of Samuel L. Jackson, who is once again outstanding in this movie. I also liked the performance of Thomas Jane, who gave his character enough credibility.
The movie is not 100% realistic, but which one of these movies is?
4 stars for suspense and interesting story.
2nd Best Shark Film Yet.......2007-07-12
Of course every shark film made after 1975 will get compared to Jaws. Jaws is a classic from start to finish. I dont consider Deep Blue Sea a classic, but its still a very good film. It shouldnt be compared to Jaws because its really NOTHING like it other than having sharks in both movies. Ive always enjoyed the films acting and its furious pace. Its really an action packed thriller. Thats the best way to describe it. Deep Blue Seas special effects have been talked about ever since the film came out. Of course, opinions vary on if the effects are good or bad. I personally havent seen a movie where the CGI stuff looked 110% real. Nevertheless, I think the sharks look pretty cool. Maybe not completely real, but they look really good. I thought the effects as a whole were always awesome in this. The effects are some the factors that make the film good but they arent what make it great. What makes this great is the pace and action scenes during the entire film. It doesnt stop with the action, the whole film is like one huge ride. Its pretty much nonstop. Like I noted, the acting is good too. The actors certainly did the best they could with what little dialogue they had. Thomas Jane played his character very well and I loved his performance. Ive seen the film numerous times and every single time Ive been entertained to the fullest. Thats what its meant to be is entertaining, not a huge epic. I loved this from the first viewing. I think that its underrated and deserves a lot more credit. I recommend it to those who like a good thriller or action movie.
It's no "Jaws", but it has TEETH just the same!.......2007-07-05
Amazon's review and product description say enough about the film, so need to repeat it here. The storyline has enough to make you suspend your disbelief so that you can enjoy this underwater rollercoaster ride. The acting is better than most in this genre and by actors we grow to like and understand. Thomas Jane (Dreamcatcher), the film's hunky hero, looks incredibly like Christopher Lambert of Highlander fame and is very convincing in his role. For you folks who like fun facts, he is currently married to Patricia Arquette of TV's Medium. Model and sometimes actress Saffron Burrows is surprisingly believable as the driven scientist who is motivated by noble reasons, saving people from Alzeimer's Disease, but who will sacrifice everything and everyone to do it. Michael Rapport, The 6th Day and Men of Honor, and Samuel L. Jackson (do I really need to list his credits????? --lol), offer very solid support as does the comic relief of LL Cool J.
Renny Harlin, no stranger to the action genre with hits like Die Hard 2 - Die Harder and Cliffhanger, keeps the pace exhilarating and managers to offer thrilling surprises in a somewhat tired genre. In addition, the effects are impressive although obviously CGI. The music is appropriate and even the absence of music at key moments enhances the suspenseful elements within the film when an over-the-top, pulse-pounding score might have been employed.
While any shark film will inevitably be compared to Steven Spielberg's Jaws, this one should be judged on its own merits without that cumbersome comparison. This is a fun, somewhat sci-fi, action film. It doesn't take itself too seriously; therefore, we shouldn't either. This is plain, old-fashioned, popcorn fun.
Avoid!.......2007-05-31
This movie is so unbelivably bad, I have to force myself to even watch it 5 minutes!
The movie is obviously set up for a disaster, you have the building which looks very high tech, but once the sharks get mean there's like no place to hide and no weapon to defend yourself with.
It will collaps if too much pressure on it. Helicopters can't land when it's a storm outside. It's highly explosive. The doors can't keep sharks out.
The whole building just screams "You will die here!", it destroys the feeling of the movie.
And the characters... couldn't they have chosen a worse heroine?
Our "lovely heroine" has the emotions of a psycho-maniac-serial killer, she dosen't care if people die because of her, she dosen't care they die in front of her, she only cares about her stupid experiment.
If I would have been in the movie, I would have pushed her into the water and let the sharks eat her!!
I was so mad when she was portrayed as innocent.
Another character also annoyed me, she sees her husband die in front of her eyes - and she dosen't care!
Only later she shouts "No!" and that's it.
Where is the emotion in this movie?
There's only dialog, talk about god and faith, bad jokes and sharks that are supposed to be super-smart, but instead appear super-dumb.
IT'S NOT JAWS BUT IT'S PRETTY DAMN GOOD!.......2007-04-08
This is one of those movies that you think will really be bad. It turns out it is a pretty good little thriller with some sci-fi thrown in. The biggest weakness is that the sharks don't always look that realistic. I am a hugh fan of Jaws and this is not in the same league, but it does deliver the goods.

#1 Anime Show.......2005-11-25
I've seen alot of anime show but this one by far is the best one out there. I was out of my seet most of the time. I would defenetly recomend it to anyone who likes action, fantasy, comedy, drama, or even romance. The graphics are really good and its hard to find an anime show w/ it so hurry up and get it. But you should probably read the books first though.
And The Search For Joshua Continues...........2005-05-16
Brought to us from Gonzo Studio (Full Metal Panic, etc.), they bring the much loved manga series "Chrono Crusade" by Daisuke Moriyama, to life. While the anime series is not exactly like the manga itself, I believe that Gonzo is doing a good job so far with the series.
Reaching the climatic ending of the series, Rosette, Chrono and Azmaria begin their journey to San Fransisco to search for Joshua Christopher. Along the way, many things and plot twists come to pass, making the story even more twisting to the viewers mind.
The relationship between Rosette and Chrono deepens over the mighty night time view of San Fransisco and we also learn more of Stella, the jewel witch, and of her scared past. Aion, as always, makes appearances and reveals more about his plot to destroy the world.
Though this anime is not well seen by some of Moriyama's fans, I believe Gonzo has done a very good job capturing the world of Chrono Crusade. Presenting the characters we know and love from the manga, Gonzo has brought the humor we have come to know them for. The indepth story of the battle between hell, heaven, and earth is presented in such an intense fashion. Also, the anime is drawn with quality and time.
Any anime fan should give this series a try! Good work Gonzo, looking foreword to volume 6!

Superior Quality Release, With Minor Issues.......2004-12-12
So I saw a listing for Tristia of the Deep Blue Sea quite some time back and I preordered it without really knowing anything about it, since it was from a new company to Anime. I believe this is Pathfinder's first foray into Anime.
Having watched Tristia on DVD today, all I can say is WOW. They did an AMAZING job on this one! The video quality is SUPERB. No artefacts, no compression issues, nothing. I checked the bit rate for about 10 minutes of the show and the lowest I saw it drop to is 9.5!
One thing many people will probably step back from is the fact that this is a sub only release, there is no English dub. The subtitles are all soft-subs. They translate the opening and ending songs. They translate some signs with soft subs, but leave out some other on screen text. The extras are included at the end of each episode just like several Japanese R2 DVDs (Godannar comes to mind), and aren't really selectable from the menu (unlike R2 DVDs).
The opening/ending credits are in Japanese only and there is no option to see the English credits except by looking at the back of the DVD case. I don't mind this at all, given that I can easily see who did what any time I want by looking at the back of the DVD case. The only issue with the credits on the back of the box is that not all the voice actors are listed and they don't tell you who plays what part. All the production people's names are on the back, however. Kawasumi Ayako plays the lead, Nanoca Flanka, many of you probably know her from that little known show... Mahoromatic (she played Mahoro).
The menu is kinda slim. You can choose which episode you want to play, whether you want subs, check some really lame DVD credits (there are like 3 people named on the credit page) and look at some stills.
Chapter stops are nearly non-existent. You have to be willing to watch all 27 minutes of each episode as there are no chapter stops. It's one 27 minute chapter. I'm a bit disappointed in this, but given the quality of the release in terms of the video, I can over look this. I never skip around in a show anyway.
If someone wants to see what a Japanese R2 DVD looks like without having to pay the Japanese R2 prices, pick this one up. No lie, it's that good.
Animation quality, considering this is a 2004 OVA release, is really good. Lots of detail and plenty of motion. Good stuff.
As far as the story goes, it's an Anime based on a "best selling" PC game. Don't let that fool you, it's still a decent show. What you have is Nanoca who is a genius inventor. She builds all sorts of inventions to try and revitalize the economy of Tristia (the town the crew inhabits). The main focus of the Anime's story is the Golem Competition which will pit domestic Golems against one another (domestic being in terms of say, doing laundry and dishes). Nanoca is forced to put an entry into the contest, though what she enters is a fighting golem, not a domestic one. One thing leads to another (and her arch rival brings her fighting Golem to the party) and a chaotic battle ensues. That's a brief summary of the first episode, the second episode could best be described as a rematch.
It's not the most original story and it's not necessarily something that will impress your friends, but it is fun to watch and well done. I recommend this one if only for people to see what an R1 company can do when given the chance. I really hope Pathfinder sells enough of this title to warrant them jumping into the pool again!
For $20 MSRP, and as low as $13 on-line, this is a fine title to pick up, if you are willing to give it a chance.

Jean and Nadia Learn the Code of Nautilus The Hard Way (Episode 13-16).......2007-08-18
The fourth volume of Hideaki Anno's first director work is about teen-pair Jean and Nadia who finds the hard code of Nautilus by a number of incidents including the death of the Nautilus crew. Series of revelation does not end there compelling Jean to realize the cruel fact about his father's fate. Nadia got hurt about what has happened and her hatred toward Captain Nemo grew.
Verdict: Very heart-wrenching part of the series requiring some handkerchieves. (Particularly epidode #15)
Rating: 89 out of 100
Recommended for: Fans of both Hideaki Anno and Hayao Miyazaki works.
Gainax' finest work........2002-05-31
Gainax Studios is something of a legend in anime circles, and deservedly so. Started when a couple of fanboys decided to go beyond being mere fans, it first created a couple videos for the large convention "Daicon", and then shifted into high gear, producing four works that are generally considered classics of the anime world: Wings of Honneamise, a startlingly realistic depiction of an alternative space program on an Earth that COULD have happened; Gunbuster:Aim For The Top!, a mecha-space opera which reaches scales of conflict beyond anything before or since; Otaku no Video, a self-parody and incisive look at the fanboy world; and Nadia: Secret of Blue Water (actual title would translate more as "Nadia of the Mysterious Sea").
Based on the world of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and using an outline created by Hayao Miyazaki (known for his magnificent works like Totoro, Laputa, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki's Delivery Service), it takes place in 1899, at the World's Expo in Paris. Young Jean, a genius inventor obsessed with flight, is present to compete in the heavier-than-air flight challenge. He is, however, smitten when a mysterious, dark-skinned girl goes by, and he chases after her. The girl, Nadia, knows nothing of her own past, not even sure of where she comes from originally; the only remainder of her past life is a huge jewel called the Blue Water. Unfortunately, the Blue Water is being sought out by a number of forces, and pursue Jean and Nadia from Paris to the open sea to hidden fortresses. Their adventures feature gadgetry ranging from simple gliders to a multi-formed Victorian steam-tech transforming gadget called the Gratan, and weapons from normal bullets to the mighty Tower of Babel, a super-weapon capable of wiping cities from the earth. Captain Nemo and his Nautilus play a large part, though their origin is different from that of Verne's original.
The music is first-rate, and most of the episodes are wonderful as well, with some being pure character interaction and others slam-bang action second to none. The only flaw in the series is the infamous "island sequence" which not only doesn't advance the plot but features second-rate animation and truly stupid plot (if it can be called that); this was apparently due to Gainax realizing they were running short of money and needed to save some for a while in order to be able to make the finale of the series live up to the beginning.
Nonetheless, this is a top-notch anime series, good for any age range, and worth viewing whether you're 9 or 90.
Reviews For Volumes 4 & 6.......2002-02-16
This page oddly is identical, review-wise, to that of Volume 6, so I'll review both volumes here instead. I will say, though, that the technical, aural, and voice acting aspects on both language tracks improve with each volume. The content for these two DVDs, however, are what distinguish them from one another:
VOL. 4: BATTLEGROUND: ***** out of *****
This is the third best of the NADIA DVDs; we are treated to more touching character development (Nadia disrespecting other people who have opinions different from hers about killing and eating meat, Jean's insatiable curiosity and love for technology and Nadia), terrific action sequences (a wonderfully paced and executed chase sequence in Episode 13 where Marie and Sanson outrun a mechanical walker), heartfelt moments (Jean painfully getting a glimpse of the dangers of technology when it claims the life of a new friend of his, as well as he and Nadia bonding throughout the volume, especially the last episode), and some truly imaginative artwork (the lost kingdom of Atlantis on the last episode). Definitely a nice pickup after Vol. 3, although not as strong as Vol. 2 or emotionally satisfying as Vol. 10.
VOL. 6: THE DEEP BLUE SEA: ***1/2 out of *****
The first two episodes are some of the best ever made in NADIA. They conclude the Nautilus episodes, and feature technically spectacular animation (an amazing feat for a late 1980's show), terrific music, and an emotionally charged climax which will leave one stunned. Unfortunately, the volume goes downhill in the second half, for we come to the studio-imposed filler episodes, ranging from mediocre to just plain awful. These first two episodes -- which begin a useless arc called "Lincoln Island" -- are filled with disjointed plotting, uneven animation, occasionally bland artwork, and some uncharacteristic antics from our characters. Although it might initially seem like a nice idea to extend the episode count from 26 to 39, the results here make one wish that the creators did exactly the opposite, for they threaten to sink (pun intended) the show. Not only do these filler episodes not suit the story, but screw up character development, waste time, and feature one too many pointless sequences for even any funny ones to hold their own ground. Be careful with this one.
OVERALL: **** out of *****
Volume 6 is obviously weaker than Volume 4, but don't let me stop you from collecting both DVDs, especially if you've been following the show thus far.
