This epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning writer of Gulliver's Travels was a ratings bust on television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the Fairy Tale Zone; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince--Wendell, grandson of Snow White--changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell's throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia. The 10th Kingdom is a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, magic to behold here. But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors, and trolls, this is not kid's stuff. It can get scary, surprisingly violent, and quite intense; you know, just like real fairy tales. --Donald Liebenson

Great movie.......2007-08-23
This is a great movie, I received it promptly and in perfect condition, I recommed this to anyone.
The most beautiful mini-series .......2007-08-11
This is the most beautiful mini-series you're liable to see. A modern woman from contemporary New York City still living with her father ends up on an adventure beyond her imagining when a gateway between her world and the strange and surreal world of the 9 kingdoms is opened. The 9 kingdoms is an alternate reality where the fairy tales are strangely true and wolves (werewolves actually) do seduce young women, princes are put under wicked spells and dark, deep secrets are hidden behind the villainous wicked queen. (I won't spoil it for you.)
One character I love in particular in this is the neurotic Wolf. Wolf is a half-wolf (werewolf) and apparently a descendant of The Big Bad Wolf. Wolf becomes the love interest in the story.
There are some amazing acting talents in this mini-series including Diane Weist in her very first villain role. It's shocking to see her out of the sugary sweet motherly role we're used to such as her role as Peg in Edward Scissorhands and the mother role in Lost Boys.
Another thing I like is the beautiful yet full figured woman who played Snow White- the actress from the practice. The writers paid close attention to detail in remembering that the original Snow White story's protagonist was fair and plump and they didn't follow the modern trend of the sickly-thin conception of beauty.
The fairy tales return to their roots with this mature- yet decent enough for people of all ages- fantasy. It's simply beautiful.
Something different in a world of copycats........2007-08-10
What I can't believe is how intricate this whole story is. I really shows a lot of different story lines, characters and twists and turns along the way. It is inventive and enjoyable. I have watched bits and pieces since the first time I watched the entire thing at once. Everytime I watch, I see something I didn't see before.
Scott Cohen as "Wolf" is totally amazing. He is the perfect lead male in a twisted fairytale. He is charming, sexy, daring, and yet flawed in a number of ways. John Larroquette is great as "Tony" and he has the comic timing down pat. Kimberly Williams holds it all together while being brave and vulnerable all at once.
My kids are 10 & 7 and they love it. My Mom is in her 60's and she loves it so it appeals to many age groups.
If you can't handle fantasy, don't watch. If you are sick of the same old formulas, then give it a try for something new.
Comes the Kingdom!.......2007-08-05
This is a delight for anyone who enjoys fantasy and folk lore. In a modern age it is so delightful to find the old stories coming to life!
Addictive Movie.......2007-08-01
This is a very addicting movie! You just can't stop watching. My Aunt had this movie when we went to visit her and we promptly came home and ordered it, my Aunt then watched with me and I had to order it for her too, and she is a teacher. She brought this to class for thier "free Friday's" and now her class has seen it several times. This is a light hearted fantasy type movie. I reccomend it for all ages!

A poignant story of a selfish young German girl's search for happiness, Blue Bird is a classic Shirley Temple film with a storybook Hansel and Gretel feel. This restored and remastered 1940 film opens with a purposely grainy, black and white world that reinforces Mytyl's (Shirley Temple) ill-humored attitude toward life. Mytyl consistently complains about everything and fails to see that she and her family are really quite blessed until her father is summoned to war. A dramatic switch to Technicolor, now bright and clear thanks to restoration efforts, marks the fairy Berylone's (Jessie Ralph) nighttime appearance and the beginning of Mytyl's and her brother Tyltyl's (Johnny Russell) quest to find the blue bird of happiness. Lead by "Light" (Helen Ericson), the children and their faithful dog Tylo (Eddie Collins) and scheming cat Tylette (Gale Sondergaard) journey through the lands of the past, future, and luxury only to find a prevailing unhappiness. In the end, it's a journey of self-discovery that leads Mytyl to find true happiness in a most unexpected place. This film marks a departure from the typically sunny and cheerful characters played by Shirley Temple and was, in spite of its lavish scenery and nominations for Academy Awards in both cinematography and special effects, unsuccessful at the box office. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
Description
Visually beautiful, full of imaginative sets, and splendidly photographed in rich Technicolor, this enchanting fantasy was Twentieth Century Fox's answer to "The Wizard of Oz". In a rare departure from her usual screen persona, Shirley plays a selfish, spoiled little girl named Mytyl, who doesn't appreciate her loving family. Only after a good fairy sends her and her brother (Johnny Russell) on a journey to find "the bird that means happiness" does she end up discovering happiness right in her own home.
Customer Reviews:
Early Color Classic.......2007-08-23
Our grandchildren fell in love with Shirly Temple the way we did 70 years ago... Beautiful movie - be sure to watch it with the kids.
Charming.......2007-06-12
I had only seen this movie twice - both times in my childhood - but it stayed vividly in my memory over the years. It made a huge impression on me. I enjoyed watching it again last night after all this time, and it was as wonderful as I remembered.
A shock at first to see delightful Shirley Temple playing a spoiled brat, in time I began to feel that she enjoyed the different role and embraced the chance to play a character so different from any in her earlier works. The movie is beautifully filmed and in gorgeous colour.
The story is the usual moral fare for the period - an ungrateful child learns to appreciate the life she has after she sees life from the other side of the fence. Not a sophisticated tale by any means, but one that still left an impression on this reviewer when she was a child.
I don't think I could recommend it to adults who enjoy contemporary movies as it lacks so much when put beside the modern cinematic fare, but for those who enjoyed it as a child or who enjoy other movies of the time, it's a sweet piece of nostalgia that is well worth a look.
Love it!.......2007-05-22
I was counting the days for this movie to come out on DVD! I love it!
The Wizard of Oz it's not........2007-05-12
MGM and 20th Century Fox battled nastily over the rights to the Wizard of Oz for over a decade. When MGM won, they wanted to "borrow" Shirley Temple from Fox to play Dorothy. A bitter Fox refused and decided to counter with "The Bluebird". Eddie Collins, Fox's staple comedian, played Temple's dog, Tylo. Had Fox won the rights to "Wizard of Oz", he probably would have been the cowardly lion. So instead of Bert Lahr fame, he became an little known actor that only great nephews like me remember.
It was one of his last films before he died. In 1944, while in the middle of his first lead role, he died suddenly of a heart attack. The film was canned and had to be refilmed giving a young actor his big break. His name was Danny Kaye.
Still Looking For Extras.......2007-03-30
I have to agree with another reviewer that the Technicolor portions of this transfer look great, but the BW opening is fairly poor. I am also surprised that they didn't even bother to tint it to its original sepia color. And lastly, although I am glad that Fox is releasing these movies on DVD, would it really cost them that much more to put some REAL extras on these? It would open them up to a much wider market and boost sales. This series is a vast improvement over the first DVD releases Fox did a few years back, but there is still ample room for improvement for the girl who saved the studio 70 years ago.

The good news is, one of John Wayne's least-known films has been restored to widescreen splendor. The bad news is, there's a reason Legend of the Lost has gone mostly unshown: it's a grievously misbegotten movie. Oh, the credits get you jumping: Wayne and international love goddess Sophia Loren under the direction of Henry Hathaway, with a Ben Hecht script and Technicolor camerawork by Jack (The Red Shoes) Cardiff. But Wayne is miscast as a raffish mercenary hired to guide French spiritualist Rossano Brazzi into the Sahara, where Brazzi's father disappeared searching for a lost city. And nothing sparks between the Duke and Loren, as a Timbuktu prostitute-pickpocket who joins the expedition because Brazzi speaks to her soul. There's little action, much turgid dialogue, and a jarring mix of Libyan locations with soundstage scenes shot back in Rome. Add a music score that sounds as if it belongs on a sci-fi film and you've got one bizarre movie. Still, Wayne completists should check it out, and Cardiff's cinematography is, as usual, ravishing. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
Told against the sweeping panoramas of the Sahara desert, this star-studded epic features an exoticmix of action, suspense and romance. Famed for its 'stunning (The Hollywood Reporter) location cinematography, Legend of the Lost delivers a caravan of excitementwith the indomitable John Wayne leading the way. Wayne is Joe January, a hard-drinking, hard-living guide. When Paul Bonnard (Rossano Brazzi) hires him to find his father and a legendary lost treasure, the two set out into the isolated wasteland of the North African desert. Joining them is Dita (Sophia Loren), a prostitute desperate to find a new life who comes between both men as they battle for survival and theirsouls.
Customer Reviews:
A largely forgetable film with a few minutes of greatness at the end.......2007-09-12
This lesser known John Wayne film is the poster child for what happens when a film is miscast. There are many reasons why this film is largely invisible among many better Wayne films, but the primary reason in my view is that there is absolutely no connection between the the three main characters. The actors couldn't relate to each other, and the result is a dry, stilted performance by all. John Wayne is horribly miscast in this role, he is too `American' and too closely identified with the American Western. He is not at all convincing as the `African adventurer'. The biggest problem with this film is Rossano Brazzi, though. He makes absolutely no connection with either Loren or Wayne. Other problems with this film include poor dialogue and a lack of clarity as to where this film was going (is it an adventure film? a character study of two men in a love triangle? a Christian-themed film?).
The basic premise of this film is a search in the desert for lost treasure in the Sahara. John Wayne's character leads Brazzi out into the desert in search of a lost city and lost treasure supposedly discovered by Brazzi's father several years earlier. Loren plays a prostitute in Timbuctu who joins the pair. Coming several years after the vastly better `King Solomon's Mines', this film shares several similar plot threads. In spite of the hyperbole, this really isn't much of an adventure film. It is more of a vehicle to get the Italian hottie out in the desert alone with two very different men and explore their reactions and underlying motivations.
The first 3/4 of this film are largely forgettable, but I've rated it at 3 stars because the film makes a dramatic recovery in the last 20 minutes. Brazzi is mostly gone, and it is in the last few sequences when we see some real connection between Wayne and Loren. Brazzi treated Loren like a prostitute, and Wayne treats her like a woman who deserves respect, no matter what she has done. Both Loren and Wayne discover themselves and each other in the final few sequences. Wayne has a great line about faith in God and faith in men. The bottom line is that this is a seriously flawed film on several levels, although the final twenty minutes make it worth the price of admission.
Legend of the Lost.......2007-01-11
Although I am a dedicated fan of John Wayne and dearly love his movies, I found this movie, which I have never seen before, to be slow and for lack of a better word boring. I will view it again and add it to my collection because John Wayne is in it.
Great classic flick!.......2006-11-03
This film is very much in the genre of Strange Cargo, which I hope will be released on DVD as well. Both movies involve the self discovery of the main characters and the titanic struggle of good and evil.
A Pretty Good Flic.......2005-03-22
I first saw this movie when I was 10 and was completely captivated. Of course, I've seen this movie on tv multiple times over the years and I never fail to fall under the movie's spell.
John Wayne as Joe January, drunken guide. Sophia Loren as Dita, a prostitute...do they ever look this good? Brazzi as a starry eyed treasure hunter and do-gooder. What a package. Henry Hathaway did a terrific job directing and Jack Cardiff does a terrific job with the photography.
Unlike other reviewers I think the soundtrack is perfectly aligned with the movie. The movie uses the desert as a fourth character. In the movie the desert is set up to be a strange and eerie place, especially the lost city they eventually end up in. Lost city, lost treasure, and finally a betrayl. The music supports this very well.
I give this movie pretty high marks. The story line is very credible. Brazzi's character shows up wanting to go into the desert to search for his father. Waynes character is hired. Before they can leave, Brazzi charms Sohia Loren's character and she manages to show up in the desert at Wayne's and Brazzi's first camp, escorted by desert nomads. Together the three travel the desert. They eventually end up out of water and stumble into a lost city, the real goal of Brazzi. Given some of the trite and predictable movies touted as good cinema today, even this movie makes them look pale.
Watch the movie for yourself. Unless you're one of those people that has to have a movie loaded with special effects, you should enjoy the experience.
Strange movie invites unfairly harsh criticism.......2004-02-11
I had just seen Houseboat and really wanted to catch another Sophia flick. There is a criminal lack of her movies on DVD. With all the harsh criticisms of this movie, I bought it hesitantly only because I couldn't find many Sophia movies. There's a strange flavor to this movie, almost as if something about it was experimental. And the score is just plain weird. The story doesn't have a strong punch line by the end, but it does come to a logical conclusion that some may not find satisfying, but I did.
The best part of the movie were the good lines they gave John Wayne and the great comic timing with which he delivered them. In this movie he seems to have perfected the kind of character Harrison Ford played in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones series. While Sophia Loren is breathtakingly beautiful, with her talent and ability to project personality, she would still be fun to watch even if she was as plain as a blank sheet of paper. (Thank goodness she is gorgeous, though.)
Maybe what disappoints some people is that this movie appears to set itself up to be a wild action adventure, but instead this is more of a character development story before the time this kind of thing was popular in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It's a good movie to display some of the Duke's abilities to display the kind of character he often plays from a different perspective. And of course, Sophia is Sophia, bless her heart, and the packaging it comes in.

Any Lucy fan is already familiar with her extensive body of television work, but as this DVD reveals, there were just as many great Lucy moments happening elsewhere on TV. As one the first stars of the golden age of TV, Lucy, (and Desi), frequently appeared on comedy specials, game shows, and commercials, and the viewing audience still couldn't get enough of her. This DVD collects some of the best and rarest of these television moments, and presents them restored and in color for the first time.
The "main feature" of the DVD consists of over an hour of great moments. The first is a Bob Hope TV special that explores what would happen if Bob took over Desi's role on I Love Lucy. Vivian Vance, William Frawley and a mischevious seal all guest star. Seeing Bob react to Lucy's antics is a treat for any fan of early TV, and as a bonus, you get to see five minutes of his stand up as an intro to the special.
The main feature continues with a Westinghouse special, which takes us inside the walls of Desilu Studios. In between the funny back and forth between Lucy and Desis, Desi leads a helicopter tour of the studio, which provides a fascinating look at old Hollywood.
Lucy then appears on an episode of "I've Got a Secret" where she has fun and shows off her acting and comedic versatility in front of a panel that includes Johnny Carson. Finally, there is a lost TV pilot that Desi directed featuring Lucy as a first time airline passenger. One shouldn't need to be told that she manages to make a mess out of the entire situation, and it's good for some real laughs.
The entire Main Feature is presented in both black and white and in Color, and it looks great no matter how you choose to watch it. The quality of the material and of the presentation is top notch. On top of it all, there are over an hours of bonus features on the DVD, most of which are just as entertaining as the main features. These include:
-Trailers for six films starring Lucy
-An appearance on game show "What's My Line" with Lucy and Desi. Panelists try to guess the identity of their two mystery guests
-Desi appears on "I've Got A Secret", with Lucy as the fourth member of the panel
-An original TV commercial for I Love Lucy
-Lucy and Desi appear in a Phillip Morris TV ad. Phillip Morris was a frequent Lucy sponsor, and it is always interesting to look back at a time when ads for cigarettes were all over the tube.
-"Adventures of a Model", a promo spot co-starring Joanne Dru, that gets interrupted by Desi and Lucy.
-Bloopers and Behind the Scenes: Home movies and candid shots before Lucy and Bob Hope get into a competition about who flubbed the most lines during their special. Bloopers are always fun and its great to see these two having fun on the set. After the segment with Bob, there are bloopers of Lucy working with animals, which are also fun.
The bonus materials end with deleted scenes from the Main Feature Westinghouse Special, and assorted trailers from Legend Films, who colorized the compilation.
On the whole, it is a great DVD, with lots of great Lucy TV and film moments, many of which can't be found elsewhere. It looks fantastic, is packed with laughs, and comes at a great price. Any Lucy fan you know will love watching this DVD.

The 1969 short movie of the beloved Johnny Lingo receives feature-length treatment in this heartwarming family film by veteran producers John Garbett and Jerry Molen. Filmed in New Zealand, this seafaring adventure expands the legend of the wealthy island trader by tracing back to childhood the boy, Tama, who eventually becomes Johnny Lingo's namesake. When a storm casts ashore a tiny canoe carrying the infant boy, Tama's tribe receives him as a gift from the gods. But when misfortune strikes, Tama is cursed and cast out to live with a feisty girl, Mahana, and her drunken father. Mahana and Tama forge a friendship and when Tama is old enough to sail away from the island, he vows one day to return for her. Good fortune takes Tama to the isle of Johnny Lingo, who teaches him life lessons of fair trade, hard work, and honor. Tama eventually returns to bestow dignity on Mahana in an ashes-to-beauty love story. Steven Ramirez, in his directorial debut, retains the spirit of Patricia McGerr's original story, "Johnny Lingo's Eight Cow Wife," underscoring the power of second chances. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Description
Based on the beloved story, this wholesome coming-of-age tale is "a wonderful family film full of tender moments, exciting adventure and good, old-fashioned values" ("The 700 Club")! Far away on a tropical island, an orphan boy named Tama is "cursed" by his tribe and finds comfort in a fellow outcast: Mahana, a feisty girl shunned for herragged appearance. When Tama sails off in search of a new life, he promises a tearful Mahana to return for her someday. But Tama's journey leads him to Johnny Lingo, a wealthy trader who makes Tama his apprentice and heir. Now, as Tama embraces his new life, he must learn that the measure of a man is not in his possessions but in love, friendship and in Tama's case honoring a promise from the past.

Great Movie.......2007-03-31
Great Movie, good to watch with all the family. Teaches courage and self esteem.
Excellent movie.......2006-03-10
This is an excellent coming of age movie. Themes include forgiveness, trust, true love, promise keeping, uselessness of vanity and good work ethics. The movie will be enjoyed by the entire family (6 or so and up). We have recommended this movie to several friends.
Wonderful!.......2006-03-07
This is a great family movie. It's a refreshing change from the overly sophisticated material we usually see being peddled to our children.
What a beautiful, wholesome movie!.......2005-08-07
No, you will not find any of the horror, violence or sex that is so prevalent in our movies this day and age. What you will find is a heartwarming story about love, value and morals. A story that teaches the lesson that everyone has worth and that everyone deserves someone to believe in them.
The scenery was a wonderful bonus, shot in beautiful New Zealand.
My husband picked up this movie because we had rented Spaceballs and it was not clean enough for my 6 year old daughter to watch. I was skeptical at first since I had never heard of it but it turned out to be one of the better movies I have seen in a long time. My daughter sat and quietly watched the whole movie. Not many times does she do that.
If you are truly looking for a good, clean family movie that will leave you with an uplifted spirit and smile in your heart then I would recommend giving this movie a shot.
Truely a magnificent movie for thw whole family.......2004-11-08
Magnificent movie that teaches love, respect, not to be judgemental, tollerance, and humility, and the vale of true friendship. Inforces committment & promises.
I believe that this is not only just a good movie, but a family treasure. We plan on sending coppies to all of our chrildre.

Randolph Scott is his usual stiff but smiling self as Leo Vincey, the long-lost American heir to a British family legacy, sent by his estranged father to reclaim the legendary "Flame of Life," discovered five centuries ago by his explorer ancestor. Producer Merian C. Cooper, best known for directing King Kong, changes the locale of H. Rider Haggard's classic adventure from Africa to the Arctic (which, apart from a spectacular avalanche, looks positively stagebound), but he pulls out all stops for the magnificent underground kingdom hidden in the icy mountains, complete with a cavernous throne room with vaulted ceilings and a massive staircase that would look right at home in the Ziegfeld Follies. The cruel She Who Must Be Obeyed (Helen Gahagan) is a beautiful but icy queen driven ruthless by her centuries of loneliness. The film takes some time to get started but once She makes her impressive entrance through a mist-enshrouded arch, we're plunged into a dangerous, exotic world of strange ceremonies, human sacrifices, nefarious plots, and the gorgeous whirlwind of light that is the Flame of Life. Though the dialogue is often flat and uninspired and the performances by Scott and Gahagan rather arch (costars Nigel Bruce and Helen Mack fare much better), this grand adventure concludes with a rousing climax full of impressive set pieces and breathtaking effects. --Sean Axmaker

"Merian C. Cooper's Classic ... SHE (1935) ... Ray Harryhausen ... Legend Films".......2007-07-21
Legend Films and RKO Pictures present "SHE" (July 12, 1935) (95 mins) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) --- now in COLOR and Glorious Black and White --- "She," adapted from H. Rider Haggard's timeless tale, starring the imposing Helen Gahagan as She (Who-Must-Be-Obeyed), the eternally beautiful ruler of the lost kingdom of Kor --- Helen Gahagan, in her only film, is striking in her portrayal of She, a woman as tragic as she is blessed - to whom others' paltry, transient lives mean nothing --- Randolph Scott, as the direct descendent and physical embodiment of She's long dead lover, brings a believable good performance in a role that calls for top of his form energy. Nigel Bruce is very fine, as usual, this time playing the scholarly friend accompanying Scott on the search for The Flame --- Helen Mack is well cast as the young lady who finds herself caught up in the adventure --- The only film appearance of Gahagan, a noted stage and opera star who later entered the political arena as Helen Gahagan Douglas --- "She" represents Depression Era escapism at its very peak.
Under Lansing C. Holden (Director), Irving Pichel (Director), Merian C. Cooper (Producer), H. Rider Haggard (Book Author), Dudley Nichols (Screenwriter), Ruth Rose (Screenwriter), Roy Hunt (Cinematographer), Max Steiner (Composer (Music Score), Alfred Herman (Art Director), Van Nest Polglase (Art Director), Vernon Walker (Special Effects), Benjamin Zemach (Choreography) - - - - This film exists today only because silent film star Buster Keaton had a copy of the original print stored in his garage, which he gave to film historian Raymond Rohauer for preservation --- The sets, costumes, etc. were all prepared for a color film. At the last minute, RKO pulled Merian C. Cooper's budget, and so, he was forced to shoot the film in black and white. Friend Ray Harryhausen and Legend Films later colorized the film as a tribute to Cooper.

SHE is still a delight!.......2007-05-09
The original in black & white and a seconmd version in color. A double treat for this good old-fashioned melodrama.
Dated adventure fantasy.......2007-03-17
Square jawed Randolph Scott woefully miscast playing American Leo Vinsey is beckoned to the bedside of his dying English uncle John in the 1935 film "She". He is told of the legacy of their ancestor John Vinsey who 500 years ago discovered a mystical land called Kor in the frozen northern regions of the Arctic beyond the Russian tundra. It had been reported that within Kor there is an eternal flame which is capable of bestowing immortality.
Scott who along with his uncle's sidekick Horace Holly played by a pre- Dr. Watson Nigel Bruce embark on a perilous journey to the land of Kor. Along the way they pick up a guide's daughter Tanya played by Helen Mack who joins them on their trek. They make their way to this fabled locale to find it ruled by a cruel despotic Queen Hash-A-Mo Tep known as She played by Helen Gahagan who tries to lure Scott to share her immortality with her.
The movie "She" was a fanciful tale replete with both garish sets and costumes and a sickening overdone sense of melodrama. The acting for the most part was horrendous lead by the wooden Scott who was far more effective in his milieu, the western.
Awesome.......2007-03-10
I remember having seen the black & white version of this film some twenty years ago - - but I was completely "blown away" by the Ray Harryhausen and Legend Films colorized version. The chorography and music of the dance sequence is alone worth the price of admission. Raldoph Scott - although sometimes critized as being "wooden" - was perfect in this film - as was Helen Gahagan. Sadly - although Helen Gahagan was an exceptional actress - this was her only film. (She was a stage actress.) As an added bonus - the optional audio commentary provides a wealth of background and historical information that is a must for all film buffs.
SHE says get this movie.......2007-02-24
This is a lot of fun to watch. Most people will connect Merian C. Cooper with the original King Kong, but this is also a great film. Randolph Scott is the star here as the leader of an expedition to find the "flame of life. Look for Nigel Bruce in a supporting role. He was better known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes. Special effect are very good for their day, but do not over take the storytelling. This DVD has both the original version and a colorized one. I recommend this, its fun!

Customer Reviews:

An Overlooked and Undervalued Treat---3.5 Stars.......2007-04-04
I remember first watching BABY: SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND with my family on the screen of a drive-in movie theatre. Like many children my age, I was fascinated with dinosaurs (and still am) and found the movie completely captivating. I remember crying at a particular scene in the movie and trying to understand why the soldiers with guns were so cruel. Many years later I have been able to watch the film again. I noticed many things I would have never noticed as a kid, such as pacing, acting, etc. However, despite having been made over twenty years ago, BABY remains rather well-preserved and is a special treat for those with a nostalgic attachment.
BABY begins in the streets of an African city during a parade and festival that reminded me of some from a James Bond movie. One man is being pursued through the streets by another. The chase ends in an alley and we discover why the one man was being hunted: photos of the mysterious Mokele-Mbembe, a supposed dinosaur that natives of the Congo believe to still exist and roam the jungles to this day. From the festive streets, the film quickly moves to a more remote area where American sportswriter George Loomis (William Katt of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO fame) is trying to teach some of the natives at a paleontological research camp how to play baseball. He is interrupted by a phone call from New York offering him a job at the Times. George is eager to get back to the States, but receives the offer just as his wife, Susan Matthews-Loomis (Sean Young), has discovered the biggest find of her life. Susan's mentor, Dr. Eric Kiviat (Patrick McGoohan), tries to downplay her discovery and claims it's just a giraffe. However, after talking with a Red Cross relief worker, Susan begins to realize that her discovery was substantial. A little marital conflict ensues, but Susan sets off down river and is immediately followed by George. Their voyage brings them in contact with a small family of brontosaurs (now known as apatosaurs). But Susan and George aren't the only one's looking for the dinosaurs, so is Dr. Kiviat and he has hired an army of guerilla soldiers to help him capture the creatures and bring them to captivity. The dinos are in some serious trouble and Susan and George are their only chance for escape.
BABY has elements from several different film genres as evidenced by the cover of the DVD which quotes the Los Angeles Daily News as saying BABY is "a cross between RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and E.T." There clearly is some evidence of Indiana Jones, especially towards the beginning of the movie and at the end. The film does have a similar spirit as E.T. in that Baby becomes separated from her parents and Susan and George try to reunite the broken family. As I mentioned earlier, there also seems to be a bit of spy-action involved, ala James Bond that influences the opening sequence and the way the villain, Dr. Kiviat reacts through much of the film. Despite this hodge-podge of genre mashing, BABY works. The different influences don't stand out in any jarring way and the overall structure of the film flows together rather nicely.
The movie has also aged rather well. Except for a few items of clothing and a heavy bent towards the changing roles of men and women, it's difficult to place the film from a specific period. The movie was made in the mid 1980s, but if someone didn't know that they might guess the movie was made anywhere from the late 1960s until the mid 1990s. About the only thing that has drastically changed since BABY was released are special effects. The special effects in BABY are a far cry from the CGI-heavy films audiences have now become acquainted with. Nevertheless, at the time BABY offered some impressive special effects. Animatronics and classic film trickery make up the bulk of the movie's special effects and they really aren't that bad.
BABY is rated PG, but there are some parents who feel the film isn't appropriate for children. The film was released just as the PG-13 rating was being used. Sensitive parents should know that the movie includes some violence (soldiers with guns, natives with bows and arrows, explosions), some nudity (once again natives dancing and walking in the wilderness), and some foul language. I don't think any of this takes away from the film or is anything that should cause parents and guardians to become overtly concerned about. The violence in the film is of the type that was typical of early 1980s family television and seems almost cartoony compared to what passes on network television today. The nudity is akin to pictures from National Geographic and the foul language is used rarely (I think there are some sh**s and a couple of d**ns). There's also a hint of sexual innuendo, but it occurs between the married husband and his wife and doesn't seem out of place. In fact, the relationship between George and Susan is a healthy one and could be viewed as a cinematic example of what a healthy, functional marriage is supposed to look like.
I loved BABY when I first saw it as a child and it was one of those movies that has stuck with me my whole life. Seeing the film decades later, I know that it isn't the greatest dinosaur movie ever made, but it's not really that bad either.
Not appropriate for children.......2006-02-19
Violence, foul language, semi nudity/foreplay. This is not appropriate for children. I am surprised it received a PG rating. It should have been at least a PG-13. The idea of rescuing a baby dinosaur and its mother is very appealing to children, but the movie would need heavy editing to be a children's movie. We did not finish watching this movie.
A film to cherish........2006-02-01
This movie is a pure delight. For its time, the dinosaur looks fine, it is not scary. Children will not be shocked, confused, or terrified by the language or content of this film (unless of course, they are overly sensitive and have night terrors after watching Bambi.)
I saw this film in my youth, and went on a quest to own it. Although some of my appraisal is based purely on nostalgia, I love this movie as an adult. It is sweet, entertaining and teaches moral lessons about the wrongful quest for fame, fortune, and prestiege at the expense of the innocent.
Sappy and overly-cute .......2005-07-27
This is a dinosaur movie but there is not even a remote possibility that it could be mistaken for Jurassic Park .It centres on a young American couple ,played by William Katt and Sean Young ,who rescue a new born dinosaur baby from the African rain forest .He is a sportswriter and she a paleontologist .
The dinasuar's father has been killed by the evil scientist -Patrick McGoohan -who has also captured its mother .Katt and Young look after the baby ,and set themselves the twin tasks of saving it and rescuing its mother .
There follows a prolonged chase through the jungle aided by friendly natives and menaced by McGoohan and corrupt cops in his pay .
The main problem with the movie is its lurches in tone .There are several violent scenes and the suggestive dialogue between Katt and Young ,together with frequent semi-nudity between them ,renders it unsuitable for the younger audience while the often unconvincing special effects will not play well with older viewers .The dinosaurs are Ok in long shot but look very fake and plasticky in close-up having a Shirley Temple cutsiness that is slightly icky .
It falls between two stools -not really a kids movie and too childish for adults.
McGoohan -predictably -steals the acting honours with an enjoyably over the top impersonation of comic book evil
UUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH.......2005-04-30
I saw this once when I was little. I cried because of the sencless animal violence. I tried watching it last week again. I didn't cry this time, but I still hate it. I mean: who woulda thought that its possible to get so emmotional over fake looking dinosaurs??? Yea, VERY fake. Not to mention the rating. More like PG-13 or R for that matter. Lotsa swearing, violence, and naked ugly tribal chicks. The only funny line in this entire piece of @#$% is when the guy tells his airplane driver about his wife. When he says "What would you do?" The hippie airplane pilot says "Personally, I'd whip the b**ch." Ha ha. Funny. Almost. I never even finished this movie.

This three-hour made-for-television epic based on the classic Chinese story Journey to the West is an engaging mix of fantasy and martial-arts adventure, and it features a veritable tsunami of special effects. The plot involves an American China scholar (played by Thomas Gibson) whose knowledge of Asian mythology becomes astoundingly useful when he is magically transported into other dimensions by terra cotta warriors who come to life. The American scholar soon finds himself face to face with a wisecracking Monkey King (Russell Wong), a mystical warrior whose martial-arts skills are matched only by his sarcastic one-liners. The mismatched heroes have only three days to find an ancient manuscript and thereby save the world from destruction, and they're assisted by the timely interventions of the Goddess of Mercy (played by Bai Ling). The rambling plot puts the characters into confrontations with tigers, dragons, and evil giants, and at times they're joined by such unorthodox allies as a human with the head of a pig. As his quest progresses, the scholar has to learn to think like a warrior, and there are innumerable obstacles put in his path. Even if the plot doesn't always seem terribly coherent, the computer-generated special effects are entertaining, and the film has no shortage of bizarre villains, flashy martial-arts scenes, and sardonic quips from the Monkey King. --Robert J. McNamara

What a fun movie!.......2007-07-25
Chinese mythology, campy modernism, a bit of "stretching", an interesting story line and some not-bad acting combine to make this a movie that the whole family can enjoy. A favorite in our family for many years, we were pleased to be able to add it to our CD collection.
DO NOT waste your time..........2007-06-25
This movie was so bad and yet I watched it all just to see if possibly it would get better. It didn't. The only one that can act is the damn monkey and even then the character development is slim. I always buy Halmark movies, they've been great (10th Kingdom etc) but this one is the worst movie they've ever endorsed. I read all the reviews and decided to give it a chance-save yourself the dissapointment. The movie could have been so good. The plot is quite good but the screenplay, acting, effects, are not. A goddess having a drink at the bar...come on, even I won't watch something that lame. Mythology is something I love but the way these people portray it becomes laughable, and disrespects the story it's trying to tell. Most of all you can't even like the hero because he is so annoying! Buy the Snow Queen, Jack and the Beanstalk, DEFINETLY 10th Kingdom, but don't buy this movie!
(no, don't even think about giving it a chance because it has a cool cover)
awsome!!!!!.......2007-05-31
i liked this movie so much i don't know what to say about it other than it's friggin awsome!!!!! it has a great story line, i liked it so much i bought it. i originally saw it on the scifi channel but didn't get to see the whole thing. if you want something to make you laugh then you ought to get this movie.
The Lost Kingdom.......2007-05-27
Well done modern telling of a classic Chinese tale. Some special effects were not up to todays standards but that did not get in the way of a well done story.
Entertainment vs Accuracy.......2006-12-06
I picked 3 stars as a medium for this movie.
For those of you who enjoy mythical worlds for entertainment purposes, then you might rank this as high as 4 stars. Though the acting by Thomas Gibson (playing journalist Nick Orton, the Scholar) falls a bit flat, Russell Wong makes for an enthusiastic and entertaining Monkey King. The costumes are nicely done, particularly that of Pigsy, and the martial arts scenes are well choregraphed though a little cheesy sometimes. The special effects, while not perfect quality, give the movie character and a touch of humor.
For those of you who favor accuracy, this probably falls as low as two stars. (1 if you are an extremist, but then why did you even bother watching this?) The movie was created with little regard of the historical/modern origins of Buddhist religion. Issues of particular note are:
1. the Goddess Kwan Ying's deception/drunkenness at the begining of the movie and the romantic feelings throughout the film conflicting with the modern view of the holy figure Guan Yin (whom Kwan Ying is based on)**
2. the portrayal of Confucious as greedy and selfish instead of wise
3. (though not a religious issue) there seems to be a little bit of a dig at Chinese communism in the movie's second half which may be too much for the politically sensitive. There is some obvious emphasis on Western values such as individualism vs the collectivism of the Chinese.
** For those of you crying bloody murder over the portrayal of Guan Yin and looking for a warped version of a Christian holy figure, see the movie series 'Prophecy' by Gregory Widen. (Interestingly, Russell Wong is also a lead in Prophecy II as Danyael.) The archangel Gabriel has turned against the Christian God and the humans of God's creation. The warping of holy figures doesn't just happen to those of Chinese origin - it happens everywhere.
Note: THIS IS ***NOT*** A RECREATION OF 'JOURNEY TO THE WEST'!!!
Too many people seem to be expecting this. If you are looking for a retelling of 'Journey to the West', keep going as this is not for you. This is a Westernized story that pulls elements from the story "Journey to the West". You will not find a cast of all Asian characters. You will not find Buddhism or Confucionism presented here accurately. This is an entertainment piece and not a historical one. This was made for a the general American (and European?) audience and not an Asian one.
