Product Description

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

Amazon.com essential video

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

5 out of 5 stars My purchase of Armageddon on DVD.......2007-08-27

I love this movie! Wow, this movie has all the qualities I want in a movie - love, loyality, comedy, friendship, drama and heroism. The unique blend of actors and their characters makes Armageddon a movie I want to watch again and again! Thank you Amazon for having this for purchase online!

5 out of 5 stars Armageddon Rocks!.......2007-08-18

Armageddon is a movie about humanity's endless courage and resourcefulness; about our struggle and triumph over the cruel forces of nature that would exterminate us. Pity those who can't enjoy an epic sci-fi action movie with a great story. What could possibly be more exciting than a story about saving the world? Not all movies need deep and meaningful messages, not all movies need highly unexpected plot twists and certainly not all movies need to be 100% scientifically plausible. This movie is just plain FUN and that's all it needs. Michael Bay's movies often have a lot of explosions, destruction and devastation. Don't blame the director if you don't like that sort of genre. It's just the way his movies are and it's why me and my friends love them.

Armageddon, unlike its twin Deep Impact, cuts to the good part at the very beginning. A meteor shower devastates New York City in a spectacular fashion. Some of the meteors even punched a few holes in the World Trade Center although I guess no one thought it was a big deal at the time. It then turns out that the meteors were preceding a much bigger asteroid that will wipe out all life on Earth within 18 days unless a nuclear bomb can be detonated inside the asteroid to blow it apart. Bruce Willis plays Harry Stamper, the leader of the drilling team that's been hired to save the world. There are plenty of colorful characters on the team and the level of comic relief is strong enough to give this movie a warm atmosphere. Particularly funny is Peter Stormare's performance as a half-crazy Russian cosmonaut. That's not to say there are no sad moments since not everyone survives the mission. In addition to the main plot of going into space and blowing up the rock, there's also a love story between Harry's daughter Grace and Ben Affleck's character that Harry doesn't approve of. It is rather predictable, but then again, what love story isn't? There are quite a few `ticking-time-bomb' moments throughout the film, which make good thrills considering that the world is at stake.

Many have complained that Armageddon has many mistakes and scientific inaccuracies but that's really unavoidable considering the movie's far-fetched scenario. If you're not an astrophysicist then these things shouldn't bother you too much. Armageddon has a lot of special effects which is a good thing for a space movie. The Space Shuttles' flight through the meteor field is incredible. The scenery on the asteroid is very beautiful and the jagged cliffs and canyons create a stunning otherworldly environment.

I strongly recommend this movie.

1 out of 5 stars A great sound and fury, signifying nothing........2007-07-27

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to ADD Theatre!

From what I recall of the press around this movie at the time it came out, there is not shot in this great stain on our cultural landscape that lasts more than five seconds. That might be fine if the shots that were in the film were of a higher quality. Alas, this is not the case.

This movie is loud, obnoxious, annoying and generally sucky. Its single redeeming virtue is that it's better than the American version of "Godzilla". Screening this film before detainees at Gitmo would likely constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention.

The SFX in the film are good, not great. The science is miserable. Not quite as bad as, say, having a shark roar, but bad. The acting is sub-par, which is really sad given the talent in this movie. The directing is about what you'd expect from Michael Bay. The man loves to use orange filters while shooting aircraft in flight. Don't even get me started about the overly jingoistic, rah-rah, Go, America!, nonsense at the end of the film.

This movie is a brutal, unforgiving, assualt on our senses and an insult to our intelligence. "Armageddon" came out at the same time as Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition), a far superior film covering much the same subject matter. If you wanna see an asteroid movie, watch that. Ignore this.

4 out of 5 stars Michael Bay Conspiracy.......2007-07-15

I'm beginning to think there is a internet conspiracy to smear Michael Bay movies. The same hateful and mindless attacks appear on many of Bay's movies, especially if Ben Affleck apears in them. Well, I think Armageddon is wonderful entertainment, and I've never come across anyone in person who hasn't been enthusiastic about the film.

A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to it, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that's headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may the be most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer's atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera--so that his little boy won't realize that he's been struck blind. With Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States. --David Chute

Description

In DEEP IMPACT, Leo Beiderman (Elijah Wood), joins a field study for his high school's Astronomy Club and discovers a new comet that unfortunately is headed for Earth. While scientists build a cave to prevent the extinction of the human race, they estimate that only 800,000 people can be selected to survive the "Deep Impact." The threat of a comet ending the world quickly sends Americans into a panic until the president announces a plan to send astronauts on a mission to destroy the comet before it reaches earth.

5 out of 5 stars Believable/Makes You Feel.......2007-08-23

I rated Jodie Foster's 'Contact' 4 stars because it was a little dumb and not quite visceral enough so this movie gets 5 stars because it has the right mix. If we were to face a large comet coming to crash on earth assuming you had an 18 month warning which is a huge assumption, this is the way it would probably unfold. Mimi Leder does a great job of directing this high budget movie. All the performances are natural and the dialogue believable. You'll believe it and it will make you feel which is alot for any movie to deliver !

5 out of 5 stars Most realistic 'earth disaster' movies ever!.......2007-07-25

This was the 'closes to the real thing' story I've ever seen.It was very spooky in that respect. And the special effects will blow you away.I would recommend it to everyone in every age group. The acting is supurb and as i said I'm sure under the same circumstances the world may just react in the same manner. The human interest stories during the catastrophe were very believeable and all the actors did a really great job!!! Kudos to Hollywood on this one... Bern in Florida

5 out of 5 stars Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition)..........2007-06-02

Tea Leoni played a convincing character in this movie. Morgan Freeman was nothing short of outstanding as President in this film. Great story that makes you think! Five stars!

3 out of 5 stars The real disaster wasn't the asteroid.......2007-04-10

The governments of the world find out about an asteroid on a cataclysmic path with our planet. Our government decides We the People are too stupid and brutish to be trusted to act responsibly with that knowledge, and they use billions of our tax dollars to build a massive shelter for favored citizens, all with great secrecy, with a few remaining slots to be rationed out to the taxpayers via lottery.

The catastrophe wasn't as bad as anticipated, and had the U.S. government not decided to use our tax dollars as their personal piggy bank to provide an "ark" for politicians and their families and friends, individual citizens could have built shelters or made other provisions that might likely have let them survive the disastrous strike that sent a massive tidal wave surging halfway across the country.

The real disaster was that millions of U.S. citizens died, but all the politicians were saved. Yeah, that's what I want when it's time to rebuild civilization: the privileged political class ready to resume Big Government As Usual. Ugh!

Of course, the movie was fiction. The bunkers our government has built for themselves and not us, those are real. While I pray such survivalist measures are never necessary, it does give one a moment of pause to realize that we've financed the safety of a pampered ruling class, while they're telling us to stock up on duct tape and a month's worth of canned goods in case of emergency.

3 out of 5 stars This or That.......2007-03-19

Armageddon resulted in a big love story with big explosions and bigger tear jerker at the end with no time for filler. That was okay, and Armageddon was what it was. Armageddon was for the eye.

Deep Impact resulted in a very storytelling kind of way of the small bits of human psyche and how one would deal with the end of the world coming while saving the big explosion for the final 5 minutes of the film. And for Deep Impact, that was okay. Deep Impact was - sorta - for the mind.

To be honest, Deep Impact was a pretty dull viewing. I was bored with it at first, until I let myself get involved with the characters. And I could only do that once I looked past the so-so acting of Tea Leoni and the annoyance of Elijah Wood and LeeLee Sobeiski's performances. When it came down to the end, I was more interested in the mother of Tea's character, and the parents of LeeLee's characters. Vanessa Redgrave, who played Tea's mother, is always a wonderful actress to behold, and although given limited screentime, her character was the most endearing in the movie.

Deep Impact is the dull asteroid movie that is for an acquired taste.

5 out of 5 stars Truth.......2007-07-05

Sometimes it hurts. I read these reviews of "angry" people and wonder why they ever watched this movie in the first place? I read another review that gave a very intelligent observation. If you don't want to watch it don't. As that reviewer stated and I restate here, I wouldn't watch a movie on things I don't agree or identify with. I never watched "Broke Back Mountain", for instance because it just isn't for me. I never watched it knowing that, to then write a scathing review to top it off.

Then I realized some of them watched it as "their" chance. Yes, we all have our chance. We will all hear the word of God and have to make a choice. Believe, or don't believe.

With all of that said, I believe many of those that have watched this movie and are so angry about it were meant to watch it. We all have the opportunity to find Jesus and we all have free will to make that choice on our own. Those so angry about this film have been touched by it and realize they are now forced to choose. This angers them and they are not ready to make that choice.

As far as the movie goes, it was much better than I expected after reading some of "those" reviews, and if you proclaim to be a Christian, I would recommend that you watch it TODAY! If you are not a Christian and wonder what it is all about, this film will not answer all of your questions, and will likely leave you with more questions. It will however leave you with the knowledge that you now have a choice to make, and if you need to do some research to make that choice, do it NOW. Find a church, seek advice, and I will Pray that you choose life. Choose Free Will. Choose Freedom. Choose Jesus!

5 out of 5 stars Good Christian movie with the gospel message clearly stated.......2007-07-05

First, Stephen Baldwin delivers a great performance here. I was most impressed with the fact that 1. They state the name of Jesus Christ as the savior of the world, which a lot of so-called Christian movies have somehow moved away from and 2. It is as accurate representation of the tribulation period as any, so those of you that mock and live to see this if it happens in your lifetime, this film might serve a purpose for you then.

Good movie to watch with your unsaved friends.

2 out of 5 stars It's "come to you-know-who" time........2007-06-07

This film is billed as science fiction and it is. It is, however, a very heavy-handed and almost continuous message for salvation via you-know-who. Not surprisingly it is produced by one of the major church organizations. A competent cast including one of the ever-present Baldwins, and if you either are sympathetic to the constantly repeated message or can avoid letting it get in your way, a moderately enjoyable sci-fi flick.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good production.......2007-01-23

The producers of this film made some very wise choices - instead of trying to make a blockbuster film with their VERY modest budget, they chose instead to focus on the story and leaving what would otherwise have required some serious (and expensive) special effects, to your imagination. This works surprisingly well in this film.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is clearly spelled out, and gives a basically believable look at what the future of this very country (USA) holds if we continue on the path we are on...

Thought-provoking, and inspiring.

This follow-up to Warlock boasts more sophisticated visual effects, slicker production values, and bigger (and bloodier) action, but fans of the original's dry wit and tight story may be disappointed. It's really more a rehash than a sequel. The Devil is up to his old tricks again, sending his favorite son (the title character) on a mission to recover six runes--ancient stones that will allow His Satanic Majesty to escape Hell and once again walk the Earth. Leading the forces of good are a group of modern-day druids and a pair of teenage lovers who have no idea they've been selected to save the world. There are some genuinely spooky moments, a few laughs, and some nice visual touches, but the scattershot script keeps throwing out one cool idea after another, hoping something sticks. On the other hand, if watching Julian Sands writhe on the ground spewing black blood sounds like a good time, this may be just the ticket. Gremlins star Zach Galligan has a cameo (as the boyfriend of the Warlock's mom!) --Geof Miller

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wacky Magic Fun.......2004-11-02

I really enjoyed this movie. It's goofy and the Druids vs. the Warlock history is a bit silly but overall quite enjoyable. It has better pacing than the first film and seems less disjointed even though the Warlock's search for the runestones is told in a series of little vignette's. Some of the "druid training" scenes are quite beautiful with very creative direction to attain subtle effects which nicely contrast the Warlock's macabre magic.

As I said before the story is a little silly but I liked it better than the witch-hunter sent through time story of the first film and the forgettable kids in a haunted house approach of the third.

Warlock:The Armageddon is an enjoyable watch. I bought this DVD because 1.Anthony Hickox directed it. 2.Monika Schnarre has a small part in it. I hadn't seen it before when I purchased this film, but I enjoyed it. I love what Anthony Hickox did with this sequel. The special effects, a good cast. I love Paula Marshall (from 'Hellrasier 3)- what a talented and likeable actress. I got a thrill seeing Monika Schnarre again in a small part as a runway model.

I hope that anthony Hickox would make more films like this.

After The Exorcist sparked a lengthy trend of supernatural thrillers, this 1976 horror film scored a hit with critics and audiences for mixing gothic horror and mystery into its plot about a young boy suspected of being the personification of the anti-Christ. (No doubt it's a favorite of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson.) Directed by Richard Donner (best known for his Superman and Lethal Weapon films), The Omen gained a lot of credibility from the casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as a distinguished American couple living in England, whose young son Damien bears "the mark of the beast." Mysterious deaths and unexplained incidents draw the attention of a photographer (David Warner), whose investigation leads to the young boy--and also to the photographer's shocking decapitation (in a scene that has since been inducted into the horror hall of fame). At a time when graphic gore had yet to dominate the horror genre, this film used its violence discreetly and to great effect, and the mood of dread and potential death is masterfully maintained. It's all a bit hokey, with a lot of biblical portent and sensational fury, but few would deny it's highly entertaining. Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-winning score works wonders to enhance the movie's creepy atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon

Description

The first film in classic, four-part legacy of terror stars Gregory Peck as an ambassador who is talked into switching his wife's (Lee Remick) stillborn baby with an orphaned infant. When young Damien is Five, the horror begins with his nanny's dramatic suicide. As the death toll escalates, Damien's father, realizing his son is the antichrist, decides that he must kill the boy and rid the world of the evil.

5 out of 5 stars HE HAS NOT BEEN SICK HAS HE...NOT A COUGH OR EVEN A COLD?.......2007-08-06

That's because Greggy he is the son of the DEVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Omen 1976 is a TRUE MASTERPIECE OF HORROR!!! I am not going into
detail of the story to many people have.What I wanted to say was
that I gave this DIAMOND in a rough of HORROR another viewing.
Yousee I have some AMAZON friends who really think this movie
is overrated and one that dare I say it(YES CLINT,DARE! DARE!)
thinks it sucks???????? I rented The Omen 06 the other night to
compare films,first off where is that Jerry Goldsmith HAUNTING
OSCAR winning score??? The music was crap! Also in the beginning
titles of the 76 Omen you have Damien with his hands in his pockets
his arms winged out which makes his shadow form a upside down cross
VERY EFFECTIVE VISION! Also the death scenes are effective unlike
The Crappin 06!!! Mrs. Baylock in the 76 version was CREEPY looking
06 you have Mia Farra the women next door look??? Not creepy at all
you can argue that why would you want someone CREEPY watching your
son. Good point you would'nt but this is The Omen and not Home Alone.
I cannot phantom how some say this is O.K.??? but movies like THE
SHINING-TEXAS CHAINSAW-NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD-THE EXORCIST and
HALLOWEEN are MASTERPIECES,THEY ARE!! But so is The Omen and it
deserves it's place with those MASTERPIECES. The Omen has everything
that a well made HORROR movie needs,it has GREAT directing,acting
and some REAL great kills the decapatation scene is FANTASTIC!
Mrs.Baylock getting the dinner ware STUCK in her should fill
any D'AMATO,FULCHI & SAVINI'S fans plate! Also for me personally
and this is a BOLLLLD STATEMENT but after seeing this the other day
I have to say THE OMEN has my fav. ending in a HORROR FILM!!!!!!!!!
The closeup and then DAMIEN'S SNEER ANGRY FACE..JUST TO LIGHT UP
TO A DEVILISH GRIN and then the film fades to black and shows a
page from the bible to the credits and MAJOR SCORE is-is KAIPELLA!
~~~~SO CREE SAY BEE BOO SAN TOO SAY BEE BOO SO CREE SAY BEE BOO~~~
HAIL HELL THE OMEN ONE OF OUR GREATEST HORROR FILMS EVER!!!!!!!!!!
NOTE: My fav.scene is when the Thorns are driving to church.
The look on Damien's face and the CHILLING score is priceless.
What ever happened to lil Harvey Stephens I like to know???
4 out of 5 stars Still crazy after all these years........2007-07-10
The Omen (Richard Donner, 1976)
Well, I girded my loins and got ready to watch the remake of The Omen. My library decided it didn't know one from the other, and sent me the original version instead. I hadn't seen it a few years, and I can't remember having ever reviewed it, so I popped it in and gave it another look. Not surprisingly, it hasn't changed much in thirty years. It's still as wonderful, and as creepy, as ever. The wonderful comes for the most part from Richard Donner. The creepy, all of it, comes from Harvey Stephens, the six-year-old kid who plays Damien. (Oddly, Stephens made one more movie and then disappeared, only to resurface again in a bit part in the remake of this very film.)
The plot is simple: the American Ambassador to Great Britain (Gregory Peck) finds out his son (Stephens) is the antichrist. He refuses to believe when a succession of priests try to warn him, but starts getting fidgety when approached by a photojournalist (the incomparable David Warner) whose pictures are showing very weird things surrounding some people who've recently got very dead. Ambassador and journalist go off to try and uncover the mystery of how to kill a god, while Damien and his infernal nanny (Billie Whitelaw, recently of Hot Fuzz) stick around the estate spooking the living daylights out of Damien's mum (Lee Remick).
The wealth of talent in this film is amazing, more so when you realize that while the principal actors (save Stephens, of course, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for standing around and looking creepy) were already well-known--Peck had won an Oscar, Remick had been nominated for one, and Warner was a BAFTA nominee, all in the sixties--Donner, now recognized as a top-notch American director for his work in the seventies and eighties, was a nobody in 1976. He'd made a few minor films in the sixties, but the vast majority of his directorial work was in television. Then came The Omen. Like so few directors, Donner made the jump from TV to the big screen, and he did it with style. "Style," in this case, included persuading the studio to cough up $25,000 to hire Jerry Goldsmith to provide the music (he won his only Oscar from twenty-eight nominations for the sublimely eerie score) and talking cinematographer Gilbert Taylor (Repulsion) out of retirement to do the film. (Amusingly, Taylor then kept working until 1994, the year he turned eighty.) Surrounding yourself with the right people will do you right, but Donner himself well knew what he was doing behind a camera, and it shows.
So if you saw the remake and are wondering what all the fuss is about, check out the original, even if you've seen it before. This is good stuff. ****
5 out of 5 stars A Good Catholic Movie.......2007-07-09
This is a good Catholic movie made during the 70s that was a part of the Big 3- The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby and maybe The Amtityville Horror. It's the story of a baby born to a wealthy family who ends up being the Antichrist himself, whiich is further explored in the sequels 2 and 3, but not 4. This is certainly better than the boring remake made during this decade. Well...they were trying to make it seem cool to a new generation, much like with Psycho, but failed. Only diehard Omen fans saw it and the rest laughed their cheeks off at how seriously they took themselves. Well these people obviously are not saved. This was made during a time when movies were not about making money but raising just enough for preservation societies, which this was Catholic. Go and laugh at this, go to hell. See what I care! Making fun of someone's religion isn't funny. It is high art that is not cheap to make!
5 out of 5 stars The Omen.......2007-07-05
One of the first horror movies after "The Exorcist" to achieve blockbuster status, Richard Donner's spooky religious thriller is refreshingly free of gratuitous blood and gore (with a few memorable exceptions). Instead, Donner builds an atmosphere of profound dread around the idea of a child who carries the mark of the Beast, punctuated by moments of brief, medieval-style horror. The cast is convincing too, with Billie Whitelaw especially chilling as Damien's Satanic nanny and protector.
5 out of 5 stars Children are evil.......2007-05-19
The beauty of Christian mythology is its evergreen ability to inspire fresh fare on the counter-mythology scene. The Omen is a classic story of "The Beginning of The End" as Damien (the Antichrist) is born, and proceeds to make his unsuspecting parents a living Hell. This is of course th version to see - dated as it is. The remake circa 2005/6 was absolute crap. This movie shows how easily a truly evil spawn of "The Devil" could slip into society pretty much unnoticed and protected by the bleeding heart liberals ;-) who value life over principle. (woo hoo!) What makes this movie so good is the casting. They really picked a great kid for the part. You can see it in his eyes, which speak more eloquently than is possible for a brat of the age of 8 (or in my case 43), to do. Are you still reading this? Go watch the movie! You will enjoy it infinitely more than my meandering drivel.
Amazon.com essential video
The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy
Description
Bruce Willis and and an all-star cast of roughneck oil drillers blast off on a mission to save the planet in Michael Bay's doomsday space epic.
I love this movie! Wow, this movie has all the qualities I want in a movie - love, loyality, comedy, friendship, drama and heroism. The unique blend of actors and their characters makes Armageddon a movie I want to watch again and again! Thank you Amazon for having this for purchase online!
5 out of 5 stars Armageddon Rocks!.......2007-08-18
Armageddon is a movie about humanity's endless courage and resourcefulness; about our struggle and triumph over the cruel forces of nature that would exterminate us. Pity those who can't enjoy an epic sci-fi action movie with a great story. What could possibly be more exciting than a story about saving the world? Not all movies need deep and meaningful messages, not all movies need highly unexpected plot twists and certainly not all movies need to be 100% scientifically plausible. This movie is just plain FUN and that's all it needs. Michael Bay's movies often have a lot of explosions, destruction and devastation. Don't blame the director if you don't like that sort of genre. It's just the way his movies are and it's why me and my friends love them.
Armageddon, unlike its twin Deep Impact, cuts to the good part at the very beginning. A meteor shower devastates New York City in a spectacular fashion. Some of the meteors even punched a few holes in the World Trade Center although I guess no one thought it was a big deal at the time. It then turns out that the meteors were preceding a much bigger asteroid that will wipe out all life on Earth within 18 days unless a nuclear bomb can be detonated inside the asteroid to blow it apart. Bruce Willis plays Harry Stamper, the leader of the drilling team that's been hired to save the world. There are plenty of colorful characters on the team and the level of comic relief is strong enough to give this movie a warm atmosphere. Particularly funny is Peter Stormare's performance as a half-crazy Russian cosmonaut. That's not to say there are no sad moments since not everyone survives the mission. In addition to the main plot of going into space and blowing up the rock, there's also a love story between Harry's daughter Grace and Ben Affleck's character that Harry doesn't approve of. It is rather predictable, but then again, what love story isn't? There are quite a few `ticking-time-bomb' moments throughout the film, which make good thrills considering that the world is at stake.
Many have complained that Armageddon has many mistakes and scientific inaccuracies but that's really unavoidable considering the movie's far-fetched scenario. If you're not an astrophysicist then these things shouldn't bother you too much. Armageddon has a lot of special effects which is a good thing for a space movie. The Space Shuttles' flight through the meteor field is incredible. The scenery on the asteroid is very beautiful and the jagged cliffs and canyons create a stunning otherworldly environment.
I strongly recommend this movie.
1 out of 5 stars Wow this movie is stupid!.......2007-07-30
1 out of 5 stars A great sound and fury, signifying nothing........2007-07-27
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to ADD Theatre!
From what I recall of the press around this movie at the time it came out, there is not shot in this great stain on our cultural landscape that lasts more than five seconds. That might be fine if the shots that were in the film were of a higher quality. Alas, this is not the case.
This movie is loud, obnoxious, annoying and generally sucky. Its single redeeming virtue is that it's better than the American version of "Godzilla". Screening this film before detainees at Gitmo would likely constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention.
The SFX in the film are good, not great. The science is miserable. Not quite as bad as, say, having a shark roar, but bad. The acting is sub-par, which is really sad given the talent in this movie. The directing is about what you'd expect from Michael Bay. The man loves to use orange filters while shooting aircraft in flight. Don't even get me started about the overly jingoistic, rah-rah, Go, America!, nonsense at the end of the film.
This movie is a brutal, unforgiving, assualt on our senses and an insult to our intelligence. "Armageddon" came out at the same time as Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition), a far superior film covering much the same subject matter. If you wanna see an asteroid movie, watch that. Ignore this.
4 out of 5 stars Michael Bay Conspiracy.......2007-07-15
I'm beginning to think there is a internet conspiracy to smear Michael Bay movies. The same hateful and mindless attacks appear on many of Bay's movies, especially if Ben Affleck apears in them. Well, I think Armageddon is wonderful entertainment, and I've never come across anyone in person who hasn't been enthusiastic about the film.
It started out rather slow but as the match went along it picked up. Kind of predictable who the last two were. SOme nice moves including a lionsault from the middle rope. Good to see the unpredicatble finish. Winners and new wwe tag team champs booker t and goldust. Match rating 7/10.
2. Edge vs. Albert- This was a decent match from the standpoint of having albert in it. Edge tried his best in this match but even that was not enough. About a 9 minute match which was way to long. Edge carried ablert through but the dq ending was horriable. Winner by dq edge. Match rating 5.5/10.
3. Chris Beniot vs. Eddie guerrero- This was another great match and let me say rest in peace eddie u were one of the best and u will be missed greatly. Anyway this was probloy up there for match of the night tied with the mainn event. Soild wrestling match and both men put alot into the 15 minutes that they were given. Winn chris beniot. Match Rating 8.5/10.
4. Batistia vs. Kane- THis was your decent big man match. I always thought that batistia at that point in his game should have sticken to tag matches but he did a good job here. Lots of har hitting action that was sloppy at times but overall not that bad. Winner Batistia. Match Rating 6.5/10.
5. Trish vs. Jackylan vs. Victoria wwe womens title- This was an above average womens match. All of these women have alot of talent. This is when victoria just broke into the bussiness here and she did a really good job playing heel here. Soild wrestling and a god womens match. Winner and still wwe womens champ victoria. Match rating 6/10.
6. Kurt angle vs. The Big Show for the wwe title- This was alot better than alot of people thought it was going to be. Leaving lesner off of this card was awful but he did play a big part in this match. Match satrted off sow but thanks to kurt angle it picked up. Lots of near falls including n angle slam to the big show. Lesner came in and f-5ed the big show as well. Amazing strenght and the ending was awsome. I love angle. Winner and new wwe champ Kurt Angle. Match Rating 8/10.
7. HHH vs. Hbk 2 out of 3 falls for the WHT title- This was match of the night in my opiion. These two guys back in 2002 had some awsome matches together. The first fall was a street fight which had barb wire on fire chairs tables trash cans u name it they had it all. Second fall was a cage match whcihc was decent but only nine minutes and a sick part were hbk jumps off the top of the cage thorugh a table on hhh. The third fall was a ladder macth which was also awsome with hbk falling off the ladder though 4 tables. Winner and new world heavywieght champ HHH. Match rating 9/10.
Well that raps up another i would give Armageddon 2002 a grade of 50.5/70 which means htis is an awosme ppv. I would say thats good i would recomend this dvd to anyone. If you can tell me if my review was helpful or not i would appreicate that. Thanks for your time.
3rd fall-ladder match
this match woz fast 2 even faster than the cage match erm a few ladder spots like HHH gettin nailed in the hed by a ladder bt hbk but HBK woz so close 2 winning but HHH runs up and pushes the ladder and HBK goes crashing through all the tables the nature boi had laid out on the outside and HHH climbs the ladder and pulls the win and is the new heavy weight champion.
match rating 10/10
4 out of 5 stars The Revelation of Jesus Christ revealed.......2007-08-06
Although this movie is a bit dated the subject makes it a must have for any Christian home. Many of the issues discussed are visible today due to the time that has passed since this films fist screening.
This is a subject matter, in my opinion, that should be researched further by Christians in the way of sound intruction from reputable seminarians. There are some that tend to deminish the message. But this movie tells what world events are of importance and of the things to come in dramatic documentary style.
5 out of 5 stars Companion to the Book of the Same Name.......2007-02-01
Isn't God Great! After I had read THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH, a civilian movie house was showing this movie near Aberdeen Proving Grounds and I went with a friend to see it! This cetainly reinforced the message of the book! (I also have a copy of it on VHS from my aunt.) I think this coindcidence was another example of God's Providence dircting the events of my life! Orson Wells' the narrator, was a good dramatic narrator. Wasn't he the one that had produced the big radio drama hoax THE WAR OF THE WORLDS? that scared the death out of so many people on the Halloween of long ago? One interpretation of Armageddon is that angeles like aliens in UFO's (or chariots in Bible language) from Heaven might accompany Christ at his Second Coming and wipe out all the anti-Christians.
This movie had some interesting small mention of how some students of the Bible had associated Adolph Hitler with the Antichrist, but Hal thought this was laughable. Some serious German minsters like Dietrich Bonhoffer did actually believe that Hilter was indeed the Antichrist. And he lost his life for speaking out against Hitler on the radio.
It is nice to hear how some serious thinking scientists do see the end coming to mankind. Things like Global Warming, Acid Rain, overpopulatiuon and famine. And I do know what was said about the Hebrew Prophets that if they did not predict things with 100% accuracy, they were put to death under the Old Testament Law.
I know that I have critics already that run me down becuase I am a divorced and am still looking for a wife. I have seen on the Wilkerpedia that Hal Lindsey has been married four time!
I have seen this movie four or five times.
The US military takes Hal Lindsey, his teachings and opinions so serioulsy that he supposedly lectures at some US War College for officers in Washington DC. I had read this on some liberal website that was critical of Hal Lindsey. But to me that kind of respect from the military of his opinions only makes him look more intelligent to me-not some WACO WACKO- like my government enemies in Toledo call me!
5 out of 5 stars Truth be told.......2006-03-14
People don't want to look at the obvious fact that this world is falling apart. this flys in the face of evolution which says we are getting smarter and better but a simple look at the billions of people living in poverty and the daily disasters in the news tell us of the grim truth, that the Bile is Right! Hal Lindsey does an excelent job of explaining some of the last days events (the times we are living in) and how they are culminating into the global judgments listed in Revelation and the prophets.
If this movie doesn't open your eyes to the truth of God's Word and how it is being played out in the news today, nothing will.
3 out of 5 stars When The Sun Goes Nova.......2005-12-30
Hal Lindsays' teaching on Biblical prophecy as encapsulated in his best-selling book 'The Late Great Planet Earth' had a major effect on evangelical Protestantism during the decade of the '70's. An effect so profound that just about every pastor teaching prophecy today approaches the subject using the same methodological framework that Hal made so popular a quarter of a century ago.
This DVD released in '78 is a visual restatement of Hal Lindsay's prophetical teachings. Now that some 27 years have passed since it's release the information contained upon this disc is far from cutting edge material. It does however serve as a fascinating timecapsule concerning many of the current events of that generation and the theological underpinnings of how the Church interpreted those events from a Biblical perspective.
Whether you buy into the "End of the World" scenario as presented by Evangelical Christianity or not it's worthy of at least one viewing. There might even be a few surprises that you didn't expect.
3 out of 5 stars Hal Lindsey - Father of modern eschatology.......2005-11-22
Please ignore the bigoted comments of the person above who obviously has an axe to grind with Christians. This movie left quite an impression with me as a teenager. Hal is a dedicated student of Bible prophecy and his book from which this movie is based has sold 10 million copies since it came out in the late 60's.
Hal Lindsey is not a prophet, nor ever claims to be one: He is simply a scholar of Bible prophecy that is unafraid to speculate on the meaning of the imagery presented in the book of Revelation. Keep in mind he saw the Islamic threat long before it became national headlines.
Yes, we are probably safe from killer bees. But with the current wars, rumors of wars, pestilences, earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes Hal's movie is more relevant than ever.
After The Exorcist sparked a lengthy trend of supernatural thrillers, this 1976 horror film scored a hit with critics and audiences for mixing gothic horror and mystery into its plot about a young boy suspected of being the personification of the anti-Christ. (No doubt it's a favorite of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson.) Directed by Richard Donner (best known for his Superman and Lethal Weapon films), The Omen gained a lot of credibility from the casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as a distinguished American couple living in England, whose young son Damien bears "the mark of the beast." Mysterious deaths and unexplained incidents draw the attention of a photographer (David Warner), whose investigation leads to the young boy--and also to the photographer's shocking decapitation (in a scene that has since been inducted into the horror hall of fame). At a time when graphic gore had yet to dominate the horror genre, this film used its violence discreetly and to great effect, and the mood of dread and potential death is masterfully maintained. It's all a bit hokey, with a lot of biblical portent and sensational fury, but few would deny it's highly entertaining. Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-winning score works wonders to enhance the movie's creepy atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon
Description
When his wife Katherine's (Lee Remick) pregnancy ends in a stillbirth in a Rome hospital, U.S. diplomat Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) adopts another baby, whose mother died. Damien thrives as a normal child until, at his fifth birthday party, his nanny mysteriously dies; Father Brennan also dies after warning Thorn that he has adopted Lucifer's son. Thorn's fears escalate when a photographer shows him pictures from Damien's party with marks suggesting how the nanny and Brennan would die. Thorn seeks out an exorcist who confirms Damien's identity and tells Thorn that the only solution is to kill his adopted son.
5 out of 5 stars HE HAS NOT BEEN SICK HAS HE...NOT A COUGH OR EVEN A COLD?.......2007-08-06
That's because Greggy he is the son of the DEVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Omen 1976 is a TRUE MASTERPIECE OF HORROR!!! I am not going into
detail of the story to many people have.What I wanted to say was
that I gave this DIAMOND in a rough of HORROR another viewing.
Yousee I have some AMAZON friends who really think this movie
is overrated and one that dare I say it(YES CLINT,DARE! DARE!)
thinks it sucks???????? I rented The Omen 06 the other night to
compare films,first off where is that Jerry Goldsmith HAUNTING
OSCAR winning score??? The music was crap! Also in the beginning
titles of the 76 Omen you have Damien with his hands in his pockets
his arms winged out which makes his shadow form a upside down cross
VERY EFFECTIVE VISION! Also the death scenes are effective unlike
The Crappin 06!!! Mrs. Baylock in the 76 version was CREEPY looking
06 you have Mia Farra the women next door look??? Not creepy at all
you can argue that why would you want someone CREEPY watching your
son. Good point you would'nt but this is The Omen and not Home Alone.
I cannot phantom how some say this is O.K.??? but movies like THE
SHINING-TEXAS CHAINSAW-NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD-THE EXORCIST and
HALLOWEEN are MASTERPIECES,THEY ARE!! But so is The Omen and it
deserves it's place with those MASTERPIECES. The Omen has everything
that a well made HORROR movie needs,it has GREAT directing,acting
and some REAL great kills the decapatation scene is FANT
