The so-called spaghetti Western achieved its apotheosis in Sergio Leone's magnificently mythic (and utterly outlandish) Once upon a Time in the West. After a series of international hits starring Clint Eastwood (from A Fistful of Dollars to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly), Leone outdid himself with this spectacular, larger-than-life, horse-operatic epic about how the West was won. (And make no mistake: this is the wide, wide West, folks--so the widescreen/letterboxed version is strongly recommended.) The unholy trinity of Italian cinema--Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Dario Argento--concocted the story about a woman (Claudia Cardinale) hanging onto her land in hopes that the transcontinental railroad would reach her before a steely-eyed, black-hearted killer (Fonda) does. (The film's advertising slogan was: "There were three men in her life. One to take her ... one to love her ... and one to kill her.") Meanwhile, Leone shoots his stars' faces as if they were expansive Western landscapes, and their towering bodies as if they were looming rock formations in John Ford's Monument Valley. --Jim Emerson

Sergio Leone's Greatest Western.......2007-09-05
What else can be said about Once Upon A Time In the West? Sergio Leone released his greatest western with this movie. It's a fun from the opening credits to the end credits. A wonderful movie at that.
Finally, on this Two Disc collection we get a commentary track, three featurettes, they can be split. And the movie looks absolutely gorgeous.
It's a definite must have.
My other favorites from him (Once Upon a Time in America (Two-Disc Special Edition) and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)) are also must haves.
The greatest cowboy "art film" ever made. I cried........2007-09-05
I'm not a big fan of western movies...... but this is nothing short of an "art film" masterpiece that has no equal. Morricone's music actually brings tears to my eyes. It is arguably Leone's masterwork. Georgous scenery and incredibly beautiful cinematogophy. This film is a stunning work of beauty and art. I still can't watch it without a tear welling up. Yes, it's terribly slow moving compared to today's "I want explosions, fireballs and laser beams every five seconds" type of films. If you want that kind of film, stick your head inside a strobe light for two hours. "Once Unon a Time" is still the greatest piece of cowboy western cinema ever made.
One of the Best Westerns Ever Made........2007-09-02
Cast, story, locations, can't ask for anything more! Had one problem with my DVD package in that the spoken dialogue was at one sound level but ALL music performed was WAY louder. I had to ride the volume control to watch this great movie, and that is not right. I can't understand how/why they could have screwed things up so much with the audio and still released it for sale. Too bad that they are not forced to have recalls for product problems that are this bad. Do I have the only DVD set with this problem?
pants.......2007-08-25
this version is missing the qoute "why would you wear suspendoers and frank shoot's him. Paramont should be ashamed.
The definitive Western film.......2007-08-23
Together with "Once upon a Time in America" this is to be considered the best tribute Sergio Leone could pay to the United States in its growth to become the power it is now by means of a film. I always loved western films (since black and white, I'm 61).I think that our Italian Director gave a deep psychological view of all the characters and I put at the top of the list a very bad Henry Fonda - especially thinking that he seldom played negative roles (Grape of Wrath, perheaps).
The music of Ennio Morricone is something sublime and I really don't understand why he never won an Oscar in his outstanding career as a composer.
As for the book prefaces it is highly recommended to view in anticipation the DVD with Documentary and Interviews.

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

Cheesy and fun!.......2007-08-27
This is one of those awful cheesy movies that you cant help but watch over and over. Its great fun. Pretty much everything is awful in this from the effects to the acting, but, who cares?! Its such a mesmerizing movie. I cant even say how many times I've seen this since I was young. I don't own the DVD but I should. It really is a great cheesy classic. And no, I am not being sarcastic. Watch and you will see...
The Only Army of Darkness DVD You'll Ever Need........2007-08-26
If you want Army of Darkness - this is the edition to get. It has it all: the director's cut and the theatrical cut (each with different endings). It also has the hilarious (and award winning) commentry with Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi - which is as funny as the film itself.
It would be nice if they had a later edition with the director's cut remastered, but until then this is a worthy purchase - and you won't regret it. This is one of my favorite movies, and I'm glad I have the choice of watching both versions since they are very different(I enjoy both).
Bruce Campbell rocks!.......2007-08-23
I have always loved Army of Darkness. It's not as serious as the Evil Dead movies; it's just a fun movie to watch.
Great Movie.......2007-07-04
This movie is awesome! I've been wanting to get it for a long time and don't regreat a cent of it.
Army of Darkness.......2007-05-18
This movie was great, very entertaining and funny. If you love Night of the Living Dead, this is even better.

An original Neil Simon screenplay makes Seems Like Old Times rise above what would otherwise be a forgettable comedy love triangle. Goldie Hawn (Private Benjamin) plays a good-hearted defense lawyer married to Ira, a politically ambitious district attorney played by Charles Grodin (Midnight Run). The craziness of their everyday lives becomes even more ridiculous when ex-husband Chevy Chase is framed for a bank robbery and seeks refuge with the woman he could never get over. Hawn hides the love of her life under her husband's nose as Chase tries to clear his name. Hawn tries to protect him and Grodin just tries to keep from going insane. A slapstick romance that's very often hit-and-miss, the dialogue saves this comic farce and provides wonderful moments between the three stars. Seems Like Old Times also has going for it winning supporting players and some half a dozen drooling, unruly dogs. --Robert Lane

DVD It Seems Like Old Times.......2007-07-04
This is my all-time movie. I was thrilled to find it on Amazon.
It really WILL make you LOL. Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase
at their very funniest. What a romantic comdey should be,
even the guys like it.
Grodin.......2007-06-05
Charles Grodin was pathetic in this movie. Chevy Chase was hiding under Grodin's bed in ever other scene, but Grodin was too blind to notice. It was so obvious that he was there. Why didn't they get Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder to play Grodin's character? Since Charles Grodin was definitely BLIND in the film. I love the scene at the end when Grodin drives his car and hits a Cow. "I think my leg is broken," he says. Good. Maybe now you won't make any more terrible movies.
Fun Movie!.......2007-05-15
This is my all time favorite Goldie Hawn movie. So glad it was available on DVD. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys 'comedy' movies.
I don't know why more people don't buy this movie. .......2007-03-24
Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn make a great duo. Very funny and pretty clean too. Together they have awesome chemistry. Bird on a Wire is great too if your looking for another great movie of hers.
Seems Like Old Times.......2007-02-17
This movie is a classic, and one of my all-time favorites. Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase are in top form at the height of their careers. Charles Grodin and Robert Guilliame are also terrific in their roles. I highly recommend Seems Like Old Times!

At first glance, this 1991 comedy looks like another formulaic fluff-piece with a standard fish-out-of-water scenario--in this case a hotshot young doctor (Michael J. Fox) whose cross-country drive to become a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon is interrupted when he crashes in the rural hamlet of Grady, South Carolina. But as Fox's character is urged by the folksy locals to stay--an offer made tempting by his romance with a law student (Julie Warner)--this unassuming little movie just gets better and better thanks to a sharp script and a splendid supporting cast. Well, okay ... maybe Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda aren't used to the fullest of their abilities, but for the most part this is a charming and surprisingly intelligent comedy that's good enough to compare favorably to My Cousin Vinny, a film with which it shares much in common. Fox has all the right moves to make his character both bullish and ultimately agreeable, and Julie Warner's performance may leave you wondering why this fine actress didn't immediately rise to stardom. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A brash young medical resident is driving across the country to begin a career in Beverly Hills as a cosmetic surgeon to the stars. But an accident of fate strands him in a small southern town. There, his outlook on life - and love - gets a down-home twist that changes him forever.

Small Town Values.......2007-07-31
Spoilers below!
This is a wonderful movie, with a great cast, fine acting, nice cinematography, and a satisfying plot. Fox, Warner, Fonda, and Harrelson are all wonderful in their roles, as are the supporting players. I want to say that up front because I have some critical things to say about the mind set behind the film.
So many of the actors in this film have played Northern roles that I often expect one of them to blurt out, "Can't get theyah from heeya." The script has fun with typical stereotypes; the worst redneck in the film, Woody Harrelson, only wants to sell the city boy insurance (which, funnily, might be worse than a beating). This may be the Deep South, but it's a Hollywoodized version that contains illiteracy and pigs and a squash parade on the one hand and a woman who's studying for the bar plus mechanics who know their way around the insides of a vintage Porsche on the other. In the end, despite the trappings, Grady is really Small Town, Anywhere. And that serves the movie's purpose well, since what we learn from Ben Stone's sojourn in Grady is that many of us yearn for our culture's small town roots, where everyone knows everyone else, where the doctor makes house calls and the nice lady at the breakfast joint knows what each of her patrons wants without being told. We like to have this side of our nature petted and stroked by movies even though, as a society, we have frantically voted and bought our way toward having the exact opposite kind of country. (Where would WalMart fit into the lives of Gradyites? MacDonald's? We aren't told.) A movie like this, with the kind of values it supposedly emphasizes, can make us forget the choices we've made that have all but extinguished many of the Gradys in America.
Watch for a scene right out of Local Hero in which Fox listens to the weather forecast for Grady on his phone while looking out on LA city lights. The parallels are too obvious, even so far as both Mac and Ben driving Porsches. Local Hero might be seen as the pattern for this film, but with more of an ambiguous ending, and it is a bit more pragmatic about our chances of living the kind of life valued in Doc Hollywood; we don't know whether Mac ever makes it back to that tiny Scottish hamlet, whereas we get our dose of comfort at the climax of this film when Ben makes the "right" choice in the end. So we do feel good after watching this movie, and for most folks that's what movies are for. But do the values portrayed in the film make us want to preserve the Gradys and Bedford Falls we seemingly long for?
An oft overlooked Michael J. Fox flick.......2007-07-19
This is one of my favorite Michael J. Fox movies. Two of the biggest shames to me- Michael J. Fox getting struck down in full stride of his career, and Julie Warner being absolutely wasted after this movie and "Mr. Saturday Night." I fell in love with her. She displays why that's so easy in this movie, overflowing with her easygoing, charming natural approach on the screen. And Fox, who plays her romantic interest as an out of town Doc on his way to the west coast, is outstanding. Many found the premise of him as a young doctor stuck in a small town to "pay his dues" a little too much of a stretch. More than a high school kid who flies a DeLorean back to the future? Fox is as polished as ever, displaying the wealth of experience he'd accrued up to this point in his career, giving a performance better than that of some of his most beloved movies. The ensemble cast is great at accentuating the small town feel that can thrown an anchor on any city-slicker in a hurry to elsewhere. You feel this small town that is the backdrop to this unassuming light hearted romance. Great contributions from the entire cast, right up to George Hamilton's chuckling cameo. This is a one of those "under the radar" jewels of the 80s. I'm a little disappointed to see it's not availablle yet on widescreen, like several other 70s and 80s gems I'm waiting on to correct that. Otherwise, if you don't yet buy it, see it.
Please, please give us widescreen!.......2007-04-28
How long will we have to wait for this classic to be released in widescreen?
Cute, Light Romantic Commedy.......2007-03-21
If you like romantic comedies, you'll enjoy "Doc Hollywood". Starring Michael J. Fox, it is everything you would want in a romatic comedy, with attractive, likeable stars and talented, interesting supporting characters...and a cute pig.
I watched it with my two teenage daughters - it ended with us all smiling!
One note: My daugthers pointed out how the recent animated movie "Cars" seemed to be based on exactly the same story line.
Doc Hollywood? Hmmmm........2007-03-11
This is a great movie for a date night. Good for both man and woman. Interesting and fun. Have watched numerous times. Always good for a rainy afternoon.
Is that your pig?

The first Inu-Yasha theatrical feature plays like an extended episode of the popular television series. Kagome, Inu-Yasha, Shippo, Miroku, and Sango are pitted not against Naraku, but against the moth-demon Menomaru, who was awakened by a falling shard from the enchanted Shikon Jewel. Menomaru seeks to recapture the power of his father Hyoga, who was defeated by Inu-Yasha's father when Hyoga came to Japan "from the continent" (i.e., during the Mongol invasion of 1274). Only the combined power of Kagome's arrows and Inu-Yasha's sword Tetsusaiga can defeat this mighty demon. Affections Touching Across Time is unusually handsome for a feature based on a broadcast series: When snow falls on Kagome's 20th-century home, the designers evoke the prints of Kawase Hasui. Unfortunately, the images have been compressed to fit the TV format, and there's no widescreen option. Still, it's a must-have for Inu-Yasha fans. (Unrated: suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon
Description
200 years ago, InuYasha's father sealed away a powerful demon from China named Hyoga. A Shikon Jewel shard awakens Hyoga's son, Menomaru, inspiring him to absorb the remains of his father's power to take control of the world. It's up to InuYasha and his friends to stop this nearly invincible foe!
Customer Reviews:
This is the least of the 4 movies.......2007-09-08
Inuyasha is a very good long running series. The movies range between alright to excellent. Affections Touching Across Time is alright. Its nowhere near the best. In fact the more I watch this movie, the less I like it each time. If your new to Inuyasha, I think its wise to skip this movie and check out the 1st season at least. All the character development is there.
Now I'm not saying this movie is all bad, its just not as great as many people say it is. I'm a fan of Inuyasha and think this movie is lacking. The story is the son of a demon, who's father was beaten by Inuyasha's father wants revenge. The villians name is Menomaru. The bad thing is, he's not a very interesting villian. His two female minions totally outshine him. They are very interesting and add to the movie in the battle scenes. In fact the best battles involves them Miroku and Sango. I also like the way they went into depth on the friendship between Sango and Kirara. I don't think this relationship got as much attention between the 1st and 3rd seasons. So I enjoyed the movie from that end.
This is what I got sick of really quick. The love triangle between Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyo. After watching the first 2 seasons, I just feel this is done to death. Somebody needs to die or just move on. Now the bickering and romance between the two can be pretty fun at times but Jesus Christ, do it in smaller doses.
As I noted before, the battle scenes are pretty good. But the ones involving the sub villians, Sango, and Miroku were by the far the best. The final battle was ok, but pales in comparison to all of the movies that come after this. The soundtrack is nothing new. Its the exact same BGM you will hear from the series. This is the reason why it feels like one really long episode to me.
This movie really didn't introduce anything new. Its still good in its own way. This is going to appeal greatly to diehard fans like myslf that must have everything Inuyasha. If you haven't seen any of the movies then I recommend checking out the later ones first. This one isn't bad but its just not as good as the others.
Good Price and Good Movie.......2007-08-13
First I love to watch Inuyasha so the movie is good. Now the price that I got it for was very good.
Can't get enough InuYasha!.......2007-07-10
I have only been watching InuYasha on Cartoon Network for a month or so. I am an adult and I don't usually watch animation or even movies, but I will stay up until 2:30 am to watch InuYasha! The series is very beautiful, touching, and exciting. "InuYasha the Movie" is the first InuYasha DVD I have watched. It is excellent. The quality of the picture is better than you see on tv, even when watched on an old computer screen. The sound is very different from the tv show too, sounding very movie-like. I would really like to see this on the big screen, because it would be stunning. The art is beautiful. I absolutely love InuYasha and Kagome, they are so sweet, and there are very funny parts: when Kagome sees the huge moth demon, InuYashu tells her "size isn't everything, Kagome!" If you aren't familiar with the series or the movie, I highly recommend it, even for adults!
loved it.......2007-06-30
if you love the show you will love this and see how much the music can effect you while you watch in in some sceens i loved it you have to see if you loved the show is all i can say
my item was in terrible condition.......2007-06-23
I ordered a dvd and it arrived in terrible condition. It doesnt work at all. It skips and freezes all throughout the movie. I kept trying to move on past the bad parts but they kept re-occuring. Absolutely horrible.

Guns, guns, guns! And a few explosions as bodies fly through the air and crash into tables and fruit stands. Once Upon a Time in Mexico, like all Robert Rodriguez movies, is all about the kinetic kick of high-velocity action. Johnny Depp, blase and whimsical, plays a CIA agent who's drawn guitar-playing gun-slinger Antonio Banderas (long black hair flopping over his face like the ears of a Labrador puppy) into a ridiculously convoluted plot to overthrow the Mexican government. Along for the ride are a craggy-faced rogue's gallery including Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Ruben Blades, and (to balance things out) the smooth, tantalizing complexions of Eva Mendes and Salma Hayek. For sheer trashy fun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a step down from its predecessor, Desperado--but Desperado set the bar pretty high. For coherent storytelling, look elsewhere, but for action razzle-dazzle, this is your movie. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Robert Rodriguez returns with the mythic guitar-singing hero, El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), in the third installment of the El Mariachi/Desperado trilogy. The saga continues as El Mariachi makes his way across a rugged landscape on the trail of Barrillo (Willem Dafoe), a kingpin who is planning a coup against the president of Mexico. Enlisted by Sands (Johnny Depp), a corrupt CIA agent, El Mariachi demands retribution, and the adventure begins. The character, made famous by Banderas, remains a slinger of guitars and guns, a tragic and bloodied hero, but a survivor forever.

good movie.......2007-05-07
I really enjoyed this movie on Dvd. Now I have to for psp for travel.
It doesn't get any more gratuitous than this..........2007-01-03
If gratuitous violence and gore are in your tastes, you will like this one. Johnny Depp's talent as an actor is obvious but that alone cannot carry this one above the blood-spatter and dismemberment. There are some that like such movies, more power to them. If you are on a low-gore diet, you will want to avoid this one.
AMAZING.......2006-11-03
I absolutely loved this movie. Johnny Depp is such a diverse actor and I love seeing him work.
Top Of Their Game.......2006-10-10
Sure this movie is silly. It's over the top and at times confusing. It's highly unrealistic and savagely brutal. It's also my favorite movie ever. The energy, the colors, the characters, the performances, the settings, the editing, the action sequences, the cinematography, the prodiction design...All top notch. Robert Rodriguez hits all the right notes in this gritty, violent psuedo-western; Antonio is the perfect fit in his best part, and Johnny Depp adds one of the most colorful and refreshing characters to a nice ensemble cast(inc. Mickey Rourke and Willem DaFoe). This movie just goes all out in what it's trying to do, and as far as I'm concerned it's more than successful. Some of the best one liners and action sequences you'll find in any movie, period. I'm just waiting on the prequel that details the life of Agent Sands before he came to be involved with this movie. Could be interesting if Depp would do it...
Johnnie Depp is the Man!!!.......2006-08-15
Review disclaimer:
Please note: This movie was reviewed on my PSP, not the DVD. Also, not sure why Amazone has a "fun factor" for this "movie" not game? Confusing!
As said in an earlier review, Johnnie literally steals the scene, every scene he is in. The whole "eye-hole" with a patch, whoa, blew my mind!
I loved this movie! You will too! Why not rent or purchase from this website? Today!

Just enough of Michael Crichton's novel survives in Timeline to make it a passable popcorn thriller. It's likely that Crichton fans will lament the shallowness of director Richard Donner's film, and its gee-whiz style of acting lays waste to any scientific credibility that Crichton's scenario might have retained. Still, the Crichton formula is a sturdy one, following the model of Westworld and Jurassic Park by involving a small band of adventurers in a fantastical realm of danger and death. In this case, a group of archaeologists and combat experts (led by Paul Walker and Frances O'Connor) use a "3-D fax machine" (so much for technobabble!) to time-travel back to France in 1357, in hopes of retrieving Walker's father (Billy Connolly) and returning safely to the present. No such luck! Fending for themselves against marauding hordes of medieval French warriors at war with the invading British, these semi-intrepid travelers find their body count rising, and the deadline for their return home is rapidly approaching. All well and good, so far, and the castles-and-crossbows action reaches a fever pitch, but it's obvious that Donner's too lazy to make the much better film that this could and should have been. Despite its enjoyable highlights, Timeline is perfunctory entertainment. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Fun movie.......2007-09-06
"Timeline" by Michael Crichton is one of my favorite books! The movie is just slightly different (due to time constraints), but it is a well done and fun movie. The costumes are awesome, and finding out they used a real castle and real trebuchets made the movie even more interesting for me. The acting, for the most part was good, but could have been better. I would like to see this movie done with a better cast...Brad Pitt as Chris, Sean Connery as the Professor, Cameron Diaz as Kate, Antonio Banderas as Andre Marek, and Seth Green as David Stern, would be my top picks to star in a remake!
I thought the effects were great! This is just a fun to watch movie, with a great story and I could watch it many times without losing interest. Great movie for teens to pique their interest in history and/or science fiction too.
Thud! Thud! What a Dud!.......2007-09-03
I like good sci-fi movies such as Gattaca and Existenz and historical dramas, even if they bend the facts of history a little such as the HBO TV Rome series, so I was looking forward to entertainment. I would have been better off, however, watching the nine o'clock news on TV last Sunday. Ten minutes into the movie I knew it was a dud. I stuck it out to the bitter end. I felt that the highlight was the siege effects in the last half an hour despite the French knight toting a shield bearing the arms of Canada's Quebec La Belle Province, founded many centuries later! The acting was appalling and very hammy. Did any of these "actors" actually graduate from Acting Academy? I have seen better drama and less emoting in junior school stage productions. There is also the problem of a very thin story line. Time travellers get stuck in a wormhole, others sent to extract them and nearly get stuck too about sums it up. Plenty of historical flaws (1357 was one year after the battle of Poitiers in which the French king and many of his nobles were captured and detained in London until the Treaty of Bretigny of 1360. It was in the middle of a very bad period for France and the English certainly didn't have their backs to the wall then ). Historical distortion would have been acceptable with a good cast and strong story line to support the techically good and seemingly highly expensive production, although in daylight the setting looked a bit like a castle in a theme park. I'm glad my copy was a 50 euro cents DVD "giveaway" with the Sunday newspaper. Had I spent nearly $10 on it I would have wanted my money back.
Timeline.......2007-08-23
This movie has something for everyone -- history, time travel, romance, action, etc. The plot has a unique twist, and the cast does a great job. It's nice to see Billy Connolly and Gerry Butler together again (Mrs. Brown), and I loved hearing them speak in their Scottish accents, rather than having them try to speak like Americans! I highly recommend this movie.
LOVE THE BOOK.......2007-06-27
I love the book and this its one of Mike's greatest. This film isn't as good, but still FUN to watch. If you don't mind bad acting and lame fight scenes. But they did spend a lot of money on the film in some areas so it doesn't feel completely like a made-for-tv-movie.
Timeline.......2007-06-27
I enjoyed the action and romance in the story and especially liked the character of Merek. If you like action and romance and a lot of sword-play and flaming arrows...enjoy!!!!

Finally Trower On DVD! He's not a young man any more ,But he still sounds great.Davey Pattison does a fine job on vocals . This is one any Trower fan would be glad to have . I Know I am .
BEST.......2007-07-01
If you like music....if you like guitar...if you like loud rock....then quit reading and buy.
If you're a Trower fan, DO NOT MISS THIS ONE.......2007-06-15
He's only gotten better as he's gotten older (and wiser). This is a pretty intimate club show in Europe (Germany?) recorded for television, but the production quality is pretty good and the audio outstanding. He's flawless, through new material and old, and the trio is tight for all but one very brief couple of measures on one tune. I've always been a huge fan of his music, but have had limited exposure to video of it. I'm even more of a fan now, having seen this. There is a pretty interesting interview segment after the show as well.
Excellent Dvd for Robin Trower fans.......2007-05-25
Robin is older, but still rockin out. He plays some old and new music.
Excellent.......2007-05-23
Sound, Vision, and Song-List are all great. Well balanced 5.1 sound and 16 x 9 widescreen. New songs and old favorites all sound fantastic. The singer is well matched to the sound of the 1970's live album.
Robin Trower is in my top 10 guitar legends, along with Gilmour and Clapton.

Charlie Chaplin is in glorious form in this legendary satire of the mechanized world. As a factory worker driven bonkers by the soulless momentum of work, Chaplin executes a series of slapstick routines around machines, including a memorable encounter with an automatic feeding apparatus. The pantomime is triumphant, but Chaplin also draws a lively relationship between the Tramp and a street gamine. She's played by Paulette Goddard, then Chaplin's wife and probably his best leading lady (here and in The Great Dictator). The film's theme gave the increasingly ambitious writer-director a chance to speak out about social issues, as well as indulging in the bittersweet quality of pathos that critics were already calling "Chaplinesque." In 1936, Chaplin was still holding out against spoken dialogue in films, but he did use a synchronized soundtrack of sound effects and his own music, a score that includes one of his most famous melodies, "Smile." And late in the film, Chaplin actually does speak--albeit in a garbled gibberish song, a rebuke to modern times in talking pictures. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Amazing........2007-06-26
Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin, 1936)
I've spent the past few decades assiduously overlooking old film comedies, mostly because of my dislike for the contemporary comedy shorts (the Three Stooges, the Little Rascals, et al.). I decided earlier this year that I was going to stop doing that; after all, they can't all be that bad. One of the earliest stops on this new journey of mine was Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin's 1936 extravaganza that makes it into critics' 100-best lists with almost alarming regularity.
The basic idea is that Chaplin, a factory worker, and Paulette Goddard, a homeless waif, team up after Chaplin gets laid off when the factory closes (it's the Depression, remember) and try to make their way in the world. This leads both through a succession of jobs (and a rickety homestead), as well as more than one brush with the law.
I know there's a great deal of social commentary to be found here; I've read more than enough articles on the film to have missed that. But my mind is a sieve, and I can't remember terribly much about those articles. What I found important, and enjoyable, about the film is that it's a wonderfully-choreographed piece, a remnant of the silent era in the age of talkies (there is very little actual speech in the film), and an excellent showcase for Chaplin's talent for physical comedy. Add to this the eye-popping beauty of Paulette Goddard, a pitch-perfect sense of pace, and an array of sets that rivals most of what gets turned out seventy years later, and you have the recipe for a truly classic film. And Modern Times surely is that. **** ½
Funny........2007-04-10
Good laughs. My favorite scene is that with the feeding machine. Even my boyfriend who hates old black and white movies was laughing out loud. Genius.
Timeless.......2007-02-19
Modern Times is among the Best 100 American movies of all time (#81), and it is among the Best 1000 Movies on DVD by Peter Travers. I rate this movie 5 stars or 9 over 10. This movie is timeless, a masterpiece, a pleasure to watch and watch over and over again. It was the last silent movie Chaplin did and the last to feature the Little Tramp (beautiful ending with the two lovers walking arm and arm into a sunset.) The theme of the movie is how technology alienates the human being. Accidentally converted into a working class hero, Chaplin spends some time in jail, where he'd like to stay forever. There we watch one of the funniest scenes of the movie, the lunch with some "white powder". I couldn't stop laughing! In the times of the Great Depression, Chaplin portraits the unemployed and the hunger. Trying to find a steady job, he ends up in a Caffe where he waits on tables and sings. Yes! He does. The nonsense song (with Chaplin original voice in there) stands as one of the best moments in movie history. I can't quit this song off of my mind ... Paulette Goddard, Chaplin's wife at the time, appears here in what's considered her best and liveliest leading lady. This DVD is beautifully repackaged for the Chaplin Collection (a wonderful collection, thanks Warner!) It includes an all-new digital transfer and a soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 as well as original mono. The second DVD comes full loaded with many speacial features, like a documentary about "Chaplin today", deleted scenes, an introduction by Chaplin biographer David Robinson, a Karaoke of the nonsense song, the wonderful song Smile, sung by Liberace, a Behind the Scenes in the Machine Age 42 minutes documentary, and lots of more extras!
I recommend this DVD to everybody, you will not be disapointed, and I would say it's a MUST for movie collectors. A classic, a masterpiece, a timeless movie!
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them
"Modern Times" Attacked American Capitalism.......2007-01-14
Charlie Chaplin was minimally a Communist fellow traveler. A staunch supporter of the Soviet Union, he once told an interviewer with the "Daily Worker" that we should "Thank God for Communism." At the very best, Chaplin could be described as a naive utopian. "Modern Times" was a not so subtle attack against American capitalism. Chaplin's Little Tramp is presented as a victim of a social system which victimizes the working class. The modern world is alienating human beings from their authentic selves. A class war exists between the haves and the have-nots. Employers exploit their workers and deserve to be sabotaged and ripped off. Factories allegedly turn the individual into a robotic creature to be pitied. Chaplin focussed exclusively on the negative aspects of the "Modern Times" of the early twentieth Century---and never paid the slightest attention to its overwhelming benefits. Aesthetically speaking, I also fail to appreciate Chaplin's slapstick brand of humor. It seems too over the top. Paulette Goddard, for instance, portrays Chaplin's impoverished romantic interest. Still, her hair and lipstick always look perfect. The unsophisticated audiences of over seventy years ago were much easier to please. Charlie Chaplin would be a nonentity in 2007.
David Thomson
Flares into Darkness
Charlie the rebel, Charlie the poet, Charlie the invincibly human..........2007-01-08
"Modern Times" begins with a shot of sheep going down a runway followed by a shot of workers entering a factory... Charlie is set down in the midst of industrial civilization, which is dominated by machinery and in which men are organized into mechanical units, Capital and Labor... Charlie's real enemies are no longer the Cop or the Boss, with whom he can always enter into some human relation, but a vast impersonality, invisible and invulnerable...
"Modern Times" offered a variety of minor attractions: it featured Chaplin's wife, Paulette Goddard; it had wonderful gags; it indulged in tricks of sound which came to the very edge of being dialog... But what did the picture mean, what was it trying to say? Because Chaplin charged his usual enormous percentage for it, and because of foreign receipts, "Modern Times" made money, but exhibitors were not happy at the limited audience turnout... For the majority, the new Charlie was too serious; for the minority, not serious enough...
Since the picture seemed to be about the dehumanizing effect of machinery, intellectuals called upon Chaplin to join them in reorganizing machine culture to some more human scale of things...
Off the screen, Chaplin said nothing... On the screen, his anarchic hostility for any kind of machine culture expressed itself in scenes like that in which Charlie is fed by a machine and that in which, crazed by the assembly line, he runs into the street, his arms moving convulsively like two pistons... Charlie the rebel, Charlie the poet, Charlie the invincibly human, had been turned into a machine...

Meet Joe Black seemed almost fated to fail when it was released in 1998, but this romantic fantasy--a remake of 1934's Death Takes a Holiday--deserves a chance at life after box-office death. Although many moviegoers were turned off by director Martin Brest's overindulgent three-hour running time, those who gear into its deliberate pace will find that Meet Joe Black offers ample reward for your attention.
Brad Pitt plays Death with a capital D, enjoying some time on Earth by inhabiting the body of a young man who'd been killed in a shockingly sudden pedestrian-auto impact. Before long, Death has ingratiated himself with a wealthy industrialist (Anthony Hopkins) and pursues romance with the man's beautiful daughter (newcomer Claire Forlani), whom he'd briefly encountered while still an earthbound human. Under the assumed identity of "Joe Black," he samples all the pleasures that corporeal life has to offer--power, romance, sex, and such enticing pleasures as peanut butter by the spoonful.
But Death has a job to do, and Meet Joe Black addresses the heart-wrenching dilemma that arises when either father or daughter (the plot keeps us guessing) must confront his or her inevitable demise. The film takes its own sweet time to establish this emotional crisis and the love that binds Hopkins's semidysfunctional family so closely together. But if you've stuck with the story this far, you may find yourself surprisingly affected. And if Meet Joe Black has really won you over, you'll more than appreciate the care and affection that gives the film a depth and richness that so many critics chose to ignore. --Jeff Shannon

Ingenious Plot!.......2007-08-29
Wow. A classic. What happens when Death wants a wealthy man to give him a personal tour through life? Very wonderfully portrayed. Suspense. You are riveted to the screen even though its 3 hours! The performances are masterful. I've watched it 6 or 7 times already. Won't be the last.
Brad Pitt as the Devil!?.......2007-08-20
First let me say that my wife has no patience for this film. I know...lots of women, and men, love it. I didn't see it in the theater, but just saw it for the 3rd time on cable. It's interesting, romantic, and laughable, all at once. I give it a mild thumbs up, but don't tell my wife. Interesting: Anthony Hopkins adding levity opposite the Devil, played by a seeming twit in the body of Brad Pitt. Romantic: For women: Brad Pitt. For men: beautiful Claire Forlani in a sweet relationship with her father played by Hopkins, not to mention falling for Pitt. Laughable: Pitt trying to play the devil, Pitt sucking on peanut butter, and Pitt, or rather the Devil, making love to Forlani. More laughable: Forlani falling for the doofus played by Pitt...kind of like falling for Peter Sellers in Being There. Granted, Pitt is handsome, but really!! Also interesting: the twist at the end, returning Pitt to his old self, but minus the bruises and broken bones he should have from being crushed by a car!! Laughable! The moral: once you've found the one you love, hold on tight. (But PLEASE watch for signs of the Devil!!)
Fantastic film.......2007-08-16
What a wonderful film. Anthony Hopkins was fantastic (as one would expect). I don't really care for Brad Bitt all that much as an actor but I thought he did well in this role. It was a convincing performance that avoids the trap of becoming a heavy-handed morality tale. The humor was subtle with reducing the film to silliness. Authentic and touching (and very unfair to label this a "chick-flick".)
Recommended.
Thoroughly enjoyable.......2007-08-01
Terrific acting and charachter development. Excellent re-writing of the plot and characters to bring it up to date and incorporate plot twists without losing (but enhancing) the main story line.
Including the original movie "Death Takes A Holiday" in the box set was a real bonus.
One of the best movie purchases I have ever made.
Excellent movie for all.......2007-07-21
This movie is a heart warming story of love and opportunity. It is great for both male and females. Although it is 3 hours long, it is continually stimulating.
