Within more or less one day in pre-revolutionary France, devil-may-care Stewart Granger learns he's the bastard offspring of a nobleman, gets orphaned, realizes he's fallen in love with his sister (Janet Leigh), swears to avenge his best friend's murder, becomes a hunted traitor, and breaks into show business. George Sidney directs as if making an MGM musical, only with swashbuckling instead of song-and-dance. The unlikely casting of Granger and Mel Ferrer as overripe nemeses proves delightful, cameraman Charles (Sunrise) Rosher's Technicolor palette alternates commedia dell'arte garishness and misty, Watteau-like imagery, and the climactic six-and-a-half-minute duel all over a Parisian theater is a tour de force. --Richard T. This is one of my husbands favorite movies. I had never seen it, but I thoroughly enjoyed the DVD.

Remember seeing it when I was a kid. It was terrific. Now that I've seen it again,it's too long and kind of silly in spots. But the swordfight at the end is well worth wading through the rest of the movie.

Is it just me? I love Technicolor.

This film is fabulous. The plot moves quickly, and the fencing scenes are great. I really like Stewart Granger; he brings a credibility and a personality and a sense of fun to his characters that makes them very real. And, Stewart Granger did all his own stunts; that always adds to a film. I have to say, the man looks good in tights, too (not many men do).

The famous sword fight is done without any dialogue or background music, which makes it very effective. Modern filmmakers should take note.

Best Version of the Three Musketeers........2007-03-23

This is the best version of the Three Musketeers. An all-star cast; Alan Hale Jr., Cornel Wilde, and Maureen O'Hara. Well cast, good action, a lively pace, a good story, and charm.

I wish they would make this 1952 version available on DVD. (Also known as "Sons of the Musketeers"). 64 votes so far, at TCM (Turner Classic Movies) shows many other customers asking for this film on DVD too.

I also highly recommend "The Three Musketeers - 1939" with Don Ameche.
