James Cameron wrote the script for this not-so-futuristic science fiction tale about a former vice cop (Ralph Fiennes) who now sells addicting, virtual reality clips that allow a user to experience the recorded sensations of others. He becomes embroiled in a murder conspiracy, tries to save a former girlfriend (Juliette Lewis), and has a romance with his chauffeur and bodyguard (Angela Bassett). Cameron's ex-wife, director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break), brought the whole, busy, violent enterprise to the screen, and while the film's socially relevant heart is in the right place, its excesses wear one out. Some of the casting doesn't quite click either: Fiennes isn't really right for his nervous role, and Lewis is annoying (and unbelievable as the hero's much-yearned-for former squeeze). Expect some ugly if daring moments with the virtual reality stuff. --Tom Keogh

Description

It's the eve of the millennium in Los Angeles, December 31, 1999. Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) is an ex-cop turned street hustler who preys on human nature by dealing the drug of the future. It's an environment that will lead him deep into the danger zone when he falls into a maze filled with intrigue and betrayal, murder and conspiracy. Angela Bassett and Juliette Lewis co-star in this provocative, action-packed thriller written by James Cameron (Titanic, The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day).

It's a dystopia future that is not to improbable. Get past some of the unlikely tech and you have something. And the soundtrack to this is brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars What a Movie!.......2007-08-04

This movie was great. It is by far Kathryn Bigelow's best film. This movie had great performances by Ralph Feinnes, Juliette Lewis, Angela Bassett, and Tom Sizemore. It had great action scenes with a great storyline. It is just too bad that this film was a failure. It had a big budget of $42 million and it grossed a mere $8 million. A great movie like this makes nothing yet trash like Batman Forever makes a whole lot of money. Any way you should definately see this movie if you haven't. It is worth 2 1/2 hours.

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars but only for Rafe's hair........2007-05-20

This movie is unmatchable but if you're into hotty Brit actor Rafe then by all means have a look. First of all, mix yourself either a Mojito or a martini...or several. Trust me, you'll need it. The key is to put the "movie" on mute and have the remote at the ready for every time Juliet Whatsherface, Angela Bassett or Tom Sizemore is on-screen. Simply FF. There's no reason to put yourself through that kind of torture. There's also no reason to put yourself through the torture of the clunky and embarrassingly cheesy dialogue. Katherine Bigelow should be ashamed and publicly humilated.

4 out of 5 stars Intense thriller.......2007-05-15

Suspensful, good acting, interesting premise, a little too violent to rate it 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-05-07

I remember watching Strange Days when it was in theaters. I loved it then and still love it. The mix of scifi with who done it makes it a great movie for almost anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood stars can have a big impact in our lives!.......2007-07-24

I have seen Edward Norton take on diverse roles in films - from a notorious racist that gets enlightened in "American history X" to a brilliant dual role in "Fight club". He is simply a fantastic actor. I watched "Strange Days on Planet Earth" narrated by him and I now realize that I have a special respect for this guy. This is not because he is versatile and gets into character in films (although he is!) but because he reveals in this documentary that Edward Norton in real life is the most humble man who can talk convincingly to people to change their lives for the benefit of mother nature.

What Edward does in this series is give us a glimpse into what scientists are finding out about the earth, what are the things that can potentially go wrong in our earth if humans act irrationally, what are the ways in which we can avoid these dangers etc. All of the segments are short, but they are all well connected. some of the answers that scientists find can be both surprising and thought-provoking. Examples: 1) The over-hunting of wolves in yellowstone led to the almost complete elimination of oak trees. why? because wolves prey on deer which inturn prey on young oak tree saplings. 2) The extinction of certain variety of toad is due to a chemical atracine in fertilizers. why? because atracine gets into water and even at the lowest concentration causes conversion of male into female frogs effectively reducing the male:female ratio to maintain population. These are only some of the very thought-provoking things that the series discusses. Infact, everything begins with a premis and through careful investigations by scientists, ends with solving the puzzle.

This one should be a must for anybody that wants to be cognizant of the fact that humans can have an adverse effect on the world around them if they are not being very careful. This series will also be thoroughly enjoyed by anybody that like Edward Norton! I highly commend his effort at promoting awareness among people about the only planet that we are ever going to live in.

5 out of 5 stars Pay Attention!.......2007-06-12

This was well researched and well presented. It helped a lot that Edward Norton was the narator but the topic at large is very concerning.

1 out of 5 stars Junk Science.......2007-04-18

Opening Arctic section strung together by a chain of assertions based on speculation with no hard scientific data to justify conclusions.

A couple of these were:
1. Mid winter rain is now common in the arctic
2. Snowfall has significantly increased
As a resident of AK, I know that neither of these is true.

At the opening of the program the question was asked whether the decline of the Porcupine Herd is due to natural cycles or global warming, but the question was never answered. They failed to examine population variances at all and instead went straight to the assertion that global warming is causing the demise of the Porcupine Herd. What are the historic cycles of this herd? How does it compare to other caribou herd populations? What factors affect these cycles?

Couldn't watch any more!

5 out of 5 stars Strange and Fascinating!.......2007-03-08

This series is an excellent and engaging introduction to a number of serious environment issues. A new kind of documentary that will appeal and generate dialogue across a wide age range. I co-lead an environmental stewardship program for 4th-8th graders... appropriate from this group and above.

4 out of 5 stars Good content, but needs a more attractive style.......2006-10-29

I am a HUGE fan of Edward Norton and the environment (not necessarily in the same order as stated). I worry a lot about our mother Earth and the days to come. I think after establishing the strategic balance of horror (nuclear weapons) humans are now able to look around and see the new challenge.

Today we don't live the struggle for peace among the world's superpowers. However, we live the struggle to clean up our environment. Taking care of the environment hasn't been a priority in our conscious since we came to being. Now, we started noticing the effects of our reckless past. Everything is changing faster around us and we have to act fast or the results might be grim.

It's really sad to see that caring the environment has become a political issue in our country. Some people use the environment for their own political sake and not as an urgent societal need. If it came to me, I would make protecting the environment a national Amendment that unites us all. After all, what good can come from freedom if there's no place for us to enjoy it?

Kudos to Norton and to National Geographic for their good work. I wish next time they present more material in a slightly more attractive style. But after all, this was a great presentation.
Thank you!

This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Corny but fun.......2007-09-03

It has taken forever to find this movie, but worth it. I'd forgotten how corny it was, but I just love to hear Doris Day sing. Wish it wasn't so racist.

4 out of 5 stars Doris Day is outstanding as Calamity Jane in this musical.......2007-08-30

This musical was softly based on the life of Wild West fame Calamity Jane and her romance with Wild Bill Hickok. Calamity Jane (Doris Day) is a heroine of Wild West, she is bold, courageous, and ease at horseback riding and sharp shooting calls Deadwood, South Dakota as her home. The local salon, Golden Garter is a popular place for local men which provide entertainment by inviting well known female entertainers from the rest of the country. Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel) is another well known resident of the town, who frequents the salon. A Chicago entertainer named Adelaide Adams is a very popular lady among local men, and Calamity vows to bring her from Chicago (called "Chicagy" in the movie). Katie Brown a young maid for Adelaide Adams is mistaken for Adams and is brought to Deadwood. When folks at Golden Garter find out that the new entertainer is not Adelaide Adams, the anger turn against Calamity. Soon things turn for better when Calamity Jane and Katie become good friends, and Katie moves into Calamity Jane's cabin. The movie has a lot of action; sharp shooting, stagecoach riding, and fighting Indians in the Wild West. The movie ends on a happy note when Calamity Jane weds Bill Hickok, Katie marries her beau Danny Gilmartin. When Calamity's new husband finds a gun under her wedding dress, and she quips; it's just in case any more actresses roll in from Chicago.

The story successfully uses the singing talents of Doris Day, but the viewers who are used to sweet and very feminine roles played by Day in numerous movies can't help but think that Doris Day doesn't fit into the role of Calamity Jane. The less known facts about the story are that some historians dispute that Calamity Jane and Hickok were romantically involved. The movie recorded some classic songs such as; The black hills of South Dakota, The deadwood stage, I can't do without you, Secret love, and Windy city.

Another good Doris Day movie. She makes a good Calamity Jane. Good music and good story line. Fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Doris Day=AMAZING!.......2007-07-12

I initally bought this DVD because our local theater group was going to put on Calamity Jane and I got the part of Calamity! I wanted inspiration and more insight into the character, and boy I got it! Doris Day was so great in this film, I never get sick of watching it! Howard Keel was great in it as well. I especially loved the dancing, singing, and Calamity's never-ending spunkiness! I give it 5/5 all the way! All musical fans need to watch this!

5 out of 5 stars biased for day.......2007-06-27

I grew up singing along with this movie, so I'm biased. I loved the romance, the love triangle [or square?], the singing and the sassy woman named Calamity. Humerous and just plain good fun.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting as a cultural history of the 1930's.......2003-11-02

A Great Depression morality tale, wherein the outlaws are really good boys who love their mother, and the capitalists and banker are really black-hearted crooks who prey on the innocent. I'd give it one star for its sheer tedium but a very youthful Roy and Trigger look terrific and who doesn't like Gabby Hayes? As usual in these old oaters, the horseriding is spectacular. Roy has one love song, while playing the pump organ. The movie inspired me to look up the history of the James gang to find out what they were actually like.

3 out of 5 stars Brain surgery, insulin shock therapy, and mild humor........2005-10-22

In Dr. Kildare's Strange Case, Kildare (Lew Ayres) urges a diffident brain surgeon to operate on an unidentified accident victim. When the patient wakes, he rants about being in the wrong day: "You put me in Thursday - I need to be in Friday!" Failing to identify the man, Kildare assumes he was already insane before the operation and goes behind Gillespie's (Lionel Barrymore) back to administer insulin shock therapy - overnight to make sure the patient gets back in Friday where he belongs - to prove the brain surgeon wasn't at fault.

There are minor subplots with a moderate amount of humor and a bit of melodrama that would only interest fans following the series - like, will Kildare take a high paying job and leave the hospital? Barrymore's performance is as good as usual, and the rest of the cast competent.

The cast includes Nat Pendleton, who sometimes played a sergeant or cop in Abbott & Costello movies like Buck Privates.

5 out of 5 stars SADDLE UP SADDLE PALS!!!.......2007-05-25

This is most likely the best Roy Rogers dvd on the market today. 3 restored movies from ROAN GROUP ARCHIVAL ENTERTAINMENT ( on one disc ) and they're all winners!
DAYS OF JESSE JAMES (1939) directed by Joe Kane has Roy & Gabby siding with Jesse played by Don "Red" Barry.
ROLL ON TEXAS MOON (1946) directed by William Whitney is one of my personal favorites as Roy tries to clear up a scrap between the sheepmen and cattlemen. I like when Gabby ( a cattleman ) is always being followed by Dale's pet lamb. He yells, " ...quit follerin' me ya walkin' lamb chop! "...This is the uncut theatrical version.
KING OF THE COWBOYS (1943) also directed by Joe Kane is the big WINNER here. Combining several source prints this version runs longer than it's original theatrical version & also includes alternate scenes as a bonus.
All 3 films LOOK GREAT & it's a real treat to watch them presented as such.
Another great bonus is a Trucolor short of Roy welcoming Roy Rogers Riders Club members to this weeks movie at the local theater.
All in all this dvd is A MUST for all Roy Rogers Fans!!!
As Gabby would say," That's the ticket by crackie!".
    BUY THIS.

A great trio of films with the BEST cowboy EVER. Being a Brit who grew up going to Saturday morning pictures, its great to be able to see some of his films in SUPERB clarity and pretty good sound. A nice touch was the Roy Rogers Club short which is also the great thing about DVD, you get a lot for your money. All in all, a great deal and good films. Please keep them coming!

5 out of 5 stars The Story of Love and Betrayal of Black Life in Harlem!.......2002-08-25

This movie is great. I have to say one of the greatest Black Films of the 30s. This movie was put out by an Independent Black Studio. Basically, it is your typical Hollywood story, a girl mother marries a man, who's a philander, and who's trying to love on her behind her mother's back, but she scared to tell her mother, because she scared she might blame her or worse... won't believe her. Her mother is so desperate to be in love, she won't believe what others tell her about him. One day, the mother works on him hugging and kissing the daughter and, the mother blames the daughter, and tells her to get out and slaps her. The daughter and has no money, so she has to do what her mother never wanted her to do, ENTERTAIN. It's more to it then this, but I won't tell you what happens next, get the movie, it really is a classic. These were some great actors, actresses, and entertainers of the 30s and 40s, and wouldn't of been seen otherwise if it wasn't for these Black Studios, Hollywood missed out on a lot of great Black talent, but that's their lose. This is really some great acting, great dancing, great singing. The movie is about an 1 and 15 minutes long, its short, but the story does get told, I wish some more was added to it, and I wish I knew where those actresses and entertainers are? they were truly talented, Especially that Ozinetta Wilcox who played Sue, and Cora Green who was in another Black Film you should check out "Swing", they either did one film and that's it, but most of these Black movies were losed or damaged, its not too many of these Black films left. But, this Black Film has been the most popular of the Black Films made of that time, and you'll see why when you see it, that's probably why its the only Black Film of that time on DVD, This film cost more then the rest of the Black Films of the 30s, and its been kept up more then rest of the Black Films. But a lot of them are being restored that were lost, but the ones that are around are good to watch, they may not be Hollywood quality when it comes to sound and picture, but its watchable and worth a watch. Wouldn't of been great if it would of had that Hollywood Touch, if Hollywood would of made a film just like this with the same cast, I bet it would of been a Great Black Hit. It's already good, but its deserve more recognition. I gave this a 5, because its worth it, its really that good. The story of Love and Betrayal of Black Life in Harlem.

    5 out of 5 stars 1930s Harlem Musical.......2001-01-01

I first viewed Moon Over Harlem when I was a kid with my dad in the early 1960s. This is a great film for anyone who wants a better understanding of African American music, dress and culture of the 1920s and 1930s. The film is fast paced and has a great music score.

3 out of 5 stars PRIMARY INGREDIENT FOR THE SUCCESS OF THIS SERIES -- ITS CASTING........2006-11-01

For this fourth entry of the fifteen feature films in the much admired Dr. Kildare series, the regular assemblage of talented M-G-M supporting players enlivens a somewhat rambling plot, with acting honours shared by Lionel Barrymore as young Kildare's overseer, curmudgeonly Dr. Gillespie, and Laraine Day, cast as nurse Mary Lamont who has an eye upon James Kildare (Lew Ayres) as spousal material. James, diagnostic intern at "Blair General Hospital" finds he has a rival for Mary's affections in brain surgeon Gregory Lane (Shepperd Strudwick), whose losing streak of dying surgical subjects brings out the compassionate best from the eponymous hero who, clandestinely with Mary's aid, applies the sticky method of insulin shock (accepted at the time of filming as valid) to a Lane patient in order to correct his condition of dementia, possibly caused by Lane's procedure, while at the same time hoping to save the surgeon's waning reputation. The film was successful upon its release due to audience perception that a graphic depiction of the sanctum within a major hospital is being revealed; it benefits from splendid cinematography of John Seitz, and also the familiar sterling cast of the series including those mentioned as well as Frank Orth, Nat Pendleton and Samuel Hinds as the senior Kildare, in addition to a raft of other performing stalwarts.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant, but only just that.......2003-04-26

    Lightweight, predictable (will the patient
with the mystery disease pull through? Will Kildare
hook up with the nurse?), hokey,
but not without some charm. Has some unintentionally
funny moments, and one can only thank God that
medical ethics have progressed since 1940
(that is if you believe the film accurately
reflects those of its period). Still, it's
reasonably entertaining, if not exactly classic
    material.

The print used for the film in reasonably good
shape, except for some moderate damage at the reel
changes. Some rain lines, too, but very few scratches
or nicks. A couple of very minor video glitches.
The picture wasn't particularly sharp, but still
mostly OK. They could have put more effort into
the video transfer. The audio was decent.

    In short a so-so transfer for a so-so
film. Still, when you take the price into consideration,
    it's worth seeing....

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for an old flick.......2002-10-27

I am a medical student collecting movies about the medical field. I enjoyed this movie for a couple simple reasons: It is full of amusing stereotypes, has some hilarious scenes on insulin shock therapy that would make a modern doc cringe, and Lionel Barrymore is a great actor! I think I will look for more movies with this funny old fellow.

The movie is about a Young Dr. Kildare (Lew Ayres) who is doing a residency at Blair General. He is in love with a nurse(Laraine Day) (of course!) and she can't stand the thought of not being married (my oh my), like the older Head Nurse of the hospital. Anyway, Dr. Kildare doesn't earn much as a resident (yup) so he figures he can't afford to get married right now. This little love story goes on around an incident with a Dr. Lane, a surgeon who is having bad luck with a string of dying patients. Dr. Kildare tries to save Dr. Lane's reputation by convincing the hospital that it isn't Dr. Lane's skills that are lacking. In the end, Dr. Kildare wins the admiration of the hospital, Dr. Lane, his residency director Lionel Barrymore), and of course the nurse.

Apparently there are 15 flicks about Dr. Kildare. This one is the 4th of 15. They follow the idealist young doctor as he emerges from medical school and eventually becomes an accomplished and confident doctor. I would like to see the other movies as well, but this is the only one on DVD right now.

Following the string of 15 movies, there was a t.v. series about Dr. Kildare that ran for a few years when t.v. was new.

2 out of 5 stars Be Glad You're not a Patient in This Hospital.......2001-08-07

I watched all of the Dr. Kildare movies as a child, and I was surprised to find out that they weren't as good as I remembered them being. However, "Dr. Kildare's Strange Case" reminds me of a less complicated time when science seemed to hold all of the answers. Those who remember earnest young Dr. Kildare, crusty Dr. Gillespie, and pretty Mary Lamont will find this movie worth watching, just as old friends are still worth talking to, even when we've outgrown them. The plot is rather absurd--a patient goes insane after brain surgery, and the surgeon (who has recently had a lot of patients die) is blamed. Aided and abetted by his girlfriend, Mary Lamont, Dr. Kildare induces insulin shock in the patient (not considered a valid treatment for years, but don't blame the scriptwriters--at that time it was). Miraculously, the patient survives and the brain surgeon is exonerated. Even more miraculously, Dr. Kildare and Mary Lamont escape charges of attempted murder and even keep their jobs.

    5 out of 5 stars Musical Western.......2007-08-23
