Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, this time thanks to director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2 and Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) and some spectacularly rugged and vertigo-inducing high-mountain terrain. The opening sequence alone delivers what the title promises, and there's a doozy of an airplane stunt that was later reprised, with modifications, in Air Force One. Stallone, looking as tough and craggy as the mountains themselves, is a rescue climber who finds himself going after a gang of crooks (headed by John Lithgow in his bad-guy mode) who've hijacked a U.S. Treasury plane and crash landed in the Rockies (played by the Italian Dolomites) with millions of bucks. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-07-13

I am a sucker for Stallone movies and this one met my expectations. For one thing, the movie took place outside and we all got to see mountain climbing prowess of all the actors. The other important factor in this movie for me was that, there was a huge amount of money involved (of course that was stolen from the government) by a evil, twisted, John Lithgow-wow, can he act evil--even shoots his girlfriend in the head!!!
Anyway, movie is a climb to the top of a huge mountain to save climbing crew and money. A bit of cat and mouse chasing on the peak adds to the fun of the movie--(B)

4 out of 5 stars THIRD TIME AROUND ------.......2007-06-20

This is the third time I bought this movie ---- upgrade and give away - Still don't like the violent scene in the cave [he got what he deserved] - too real and gross.
I still chuckle at some comments - doesn't the viewers pay attention to the movie?
Gabe [Stallone] lost his best friends [Rooker] girl in the opening - he already has a thing for the female rescue pilot [Janine Turner] [if that is what she is]

Give or take - it has a lot of action - Lithgow [Erik Qualen] is an excellent maniac - it is the money or nothing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the money chase - and the slight humor involved, bunny rabbit and avalanche - the FBI? being left in the dust - they didn't seem to have any idea that their money could be stolen. Silly guys.

I liked Gabe's apparent turn-down of Turner and then he shows up on the mountain ahead of Rooker - he may have lost his nerve but he is there for his friend [who doesn't want him there].

Great helicopter hang-up - just what Qualen deserved. Was that the FBI to the rescue??? What slow pokes.

Definitely recommend - some extreme violence but a cliffhanger -- Featurette worth watching. [this in the Collecters Series].

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STALLONE ACTION MOVIE!.......2007-04-08

I am lucky enough to have a huge 10 foot screen in my home theater, so watching a movie like this one really makes me appreciate it! The view of the mountains in this picture is amazing and not for those with a fear of heights! Lithgow plays a nasty heartless criminal and does have fun with his role. A great action movie that will knock your socks off!

4 out of 5 stars Hang on.......2006-12-18

While this movie is not as dramatic on DVD as it was in theatres, the scenery is still great, with lots of action sequences and a great performance from John Lithgow in the bad guy role, Cliffhanger is one of the great action flicks and still one of Stallone's best. At a cheap price, this is a great buy, strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Stallone fan.......2006-03-28

Can't help it, I'm a Stallone fan (though I didn't care for the dingy movie with Dolly), but this one is great for the collection. I started following this actor with all the Rocky movies, then Rambo, etc. This movie has the unforgettable death scene that hooks you in the beginning, and the stunts with the 'plane' that follow are excellent. When you mix mountain climbing with lots of snow and ice, and toss in some bad guys, there's bound to be a lot of action. The movie hasn't edged out the Rocky and Rambo movies as my favorites, but it's a good Stallone flick.

4 out of 5 stars So you'll know: Not the TV Series. .......2007-01-16

If you're looking for the 1949-1955 TV series with Al Hodge as Captain Video and Don Hastings as the Video Ranger, this is not it. Unhappily, most of all the footage from that series died when the old Dumont Network died in the late 50's.

For those of you like me who are nostalgic over the TV series, there are a number of websites about Captain Video, so see Wikipedia for a starting place with links: [...]

THIS DVD is the movie serial that was made with different actors, and seems to be the FIRST TV Show to be made into a movie!

Just thought you might want to know...

5 out of 5 stars CAMPY, CORNY, CUTE AND HILLARIOUS.......2006-11-06

My opinion is not without bias, my father was the Video Ranger...but when we played this series of DVD's for all our friends, laughter was continuous. To think that in that day they thought what they were doing was "the cutting edge" for special effects, is hysterical all by itself, but then some of the lines they speak even take it to the next level of funny. It's the perfect slumber party DVD, popcorn, pepsi and Captain Video, your sides will ache from laughing so much.

2 out of 5 stars A very poor serial.......2006-04-04

First there is the problem of the VCI logo flashing every four minutes for twenty seconds. It is completely unacceptable to interfere with potential enjoyment of a product in that fashion.

That said, it is hard to enjoy this serial. Virtually the entire serial is a repeat of a basic car chase and the use of some ridiculous gadget at headquarters to resolve the cliffhanger.

Captain Video is frozen on a distant planet and headquarters just happens to locate him and send out a defroster beam. Pure cheese.

This serial is for completist collectors only. Others should look elsewhere

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD could have been great.......2005-11-22

I saw this serial in theatricial re-release in the late 50s without the tinted scenes. Actually, I didn't know it had tinted scenes until I got the new DVD. VCI Entertainment has done a great job of putting this DVD together. The picture quality and film transfer are excellent. The special features include a nice selection of Sci-Fi trailers and bios of the stars. The major flaw I found with the DVD was the VCI logo popping up in the bottom right corner of the screen every few minutes. That was disturbing. So much so that I phoned VCI and made a formal complaint to the customer service department. When I'm watching a movie I don't want to see on-screen logos and advertisement. That's one of my major objections to watching network T.V.. When I pay hard earned cash for a quality DVD I certainly don't want to see a logo pop up. This is one reason I purchase my DVDs and don't record them off TCM. VCI's response to me was very couteous. The service rep stated that the logo was inserted to dissuade pirating. Pirating is not my problem. Other home video companies manage to put copy guard inside their product. I didn't buy the DVD to copy it. There was no Paramount logo popping up in my new DVD of the original "War Of The Worlds." I will make sure that I phone VCI in the future before I purchase their products. If the logo is not a problem for you, then you will love this new DVD. If it is a problem, then save your money.

Wayne even went so far as to name his son Ethan after that character...The inscription on the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to him in 1979 reads, simply, "John Wayne, American."...After meeting the late Superman star Christopher Reeve at the 1979 Academy Awards, Wayne turned to Cary Grant and said "This is our new man. He's taking over."...Turned down the role of Marshal Dillon on "Gunsmoke" (1955) because he did not want to commit to a weekly TV series. He recommended his friend James Arness for the role, and gave the on camera introduction in the pilot episode...I would like to be remembered, well...the Mexicans have a phrase, 'Feo fuerte y formal'. Which means; he was ugly, strong and had dignity."

        Description

THE ZORRO CLIFFHANGER COLLECTION Three complete action-packed serials!

Zorro! The very name means swashbuckling adventure. And Zorro found an excellent venue for his style of action in the cliffhanger serials of the 1930s and '40s. Instead of a feature film, moviegoers were treated to weekly installments of a twelve-episode adventure saga, each chapter ending with the valiant hero facing imminent doom-then "Continued Next Week" informed audiences that if they wanted to find out what happens to their hero, they had to come back for the next thrilling chapter.

Zorro slashed, whipped and shot his way through endless perils and numerous dastardly minions before finally defeating the cunning master villain in the end. Now you can experience all the thrills without the week-long anxious waiting for the next chapter. This collection of action-packed serials includes:

ZORRO RIDES AGAIN with John Carroll in the title role as a descendent of the original Zorro battling railroad saboteurs in modern day Mexico.

ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION starring Reed Hadley as the original Zorro fighting a masked villain stirring Indians onto the warpath in 1820s Mexico.

ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP featuring a female heroine in Linda Stirling, who dons the black mask to thwart lawless gangs in 1880s Idaho territory.

Three action-packed 12-chapter cliffhanger serials in their entirety, all presenting masked avengers of the oppressed! BONUS: Original theatrical trailers of all three serials, plus an exclusive interview with Linda Stirling, star of ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP!

4 out of 5 stars Fun Black & White Serials!.......2006-05-02

I'm not sure why people think this was colorized. It's all black and white serials. These may not be the best movies ever made, but it's an interesting complement to the more familiar faces of Zorro, like Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, Guy Williams, and Antonio Banderas. Not a bad deal, really.

        Vertical Limit
Finally, a movie for the REI set! For all those mountain-climbing aficionados who devoured Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and similar books (as well as the IMAX film Everest), Vertical Limit attempts to translate man-against-the-mountain adventure into compelling, albeit fictional, drama. And while the climbing action is pretty darn breathtaking, somebody forgot to put the brakes on the cliché machine while penning the screenplay. Two siblings (Chris O'Donnell and Robin Tunney) are mentally scarred by a climbing accident in which their father died to save them. She becomes a famous mountain climber (catch that Sports Illustrated cover?); he never climbs again, and becomes a National Geographic photographer. She agrees to accompany a shady billionaire (Bill Paxton) up the icy carapace of K2, the world's second highest mountain; he just happens to be "in the neighborhood" when she starts. After the requisite argument, she sets out, but an avalanche strands her and the billionaire in some kind of underground cavern, and bad weather forbids a daring rescue. It's up to her determined brother to bring her back, along with a ragtag team of rescuers that includes a French-Canadian babe, two wisecracking Aussies, and a crusty old sage (Scott Glenn) who has a few scores to settle. It's easy to pick out the rest of the story from here (though you probably didn't count on that faulty nitroglycerine, now did you?), but Vertical Limit is less about the hackneyed plot than it is about putting its characters into increasingly dangerous situations and hanging them precariously over various mountainsides. It's a credit to director Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) that the impressive action keeps the film moving along past the bordering-on-absurd plot twists. O'Donnell tosses his mane of fluffy hair admirably, but it's still disheartening to see this once-promising actor turning into a pretty-boy stand-in; only Glenn manages to overcome his character's predictability. Mountaineering enthusiasts will recognize a cameo by world-renowned climber Ed Viesturs, who as an actor proves that he's... a very good mountain climber. --Mark Englehart

        Into Thin Air
Based on Jon Krakauer's bestselling book, Into Thin Air re-creates an ill-fated 1996 expedition to Everest that claimed at least five lives, including those of two world-class climbers. Only 90 minutes in length, the film jumps right into the action at Everest base camp and compresses the two-month trek into just a few days of exhilarating adventure. Periodic voice-overs by Krakauer (Christopher McDonald) provide essential background information and guide us through the invisible, intensifying effects of altitude and stress. Krakauer joined the trip to write an article on the commercialization of Everest, but as conditions on the mountain deteriorate he is forced to focus all his energy on survival. Unfortunately the film fails to really develop any of its characters before thrusting them onto the harrowing face of Everest. As a result, it's difficult to understand the relationships that play out as the group struggles to the summit and back. While the trio of leading actors is solid, only Nat Parker (who plays guide Rob Hall) has enough screen time to develop an interesting, complex character. Peter Horton's portrayal of unconventional guide Scott Fischer is almost hyperbolic and McDonald's Krakauer is stiff and difficult to read. While the film succeeds in creating a palpable sense of agony and suspense, those in search of a more thoughtful, detailed account of the expedition will be better served by reading the book. --Claire Campbell

        Cliffhanger

        4 out of 5 stars 6 Hours of thrill.......2001-11-05

I have seen the 3 movies, and they assure you 6 hours full of action, suspense and thrill.

1 out of 5 stars A collection of unfunny comdies.......2001-05-26

I would be totally amazed if anyone is actually trying to get this set of items. "Vertical Limit" is simply one of the most ludicrous and self-indulgent action flicks I have ever seen. The plot was silly and the dialogue was uncomfortably boring. Why didn't they put the bombs INSIDE the bag?? Besides, Chris ended up the ultimate villain towards the end by not caring anyone but his sister. "Cliffhanger" was not so hopelessly hilarious, but it is definitely not a worth-buying. As for "Into Thin Air", I haven't even heard of such a film! I checked IMDB and found that it is a TV-movie with an average rating of 5.6/10.

Well, but if you like mountain-climbing so much, I won't stop you.
