A sleeper at the time of its release in 1984, Thom Eberhardt's Night of the Comet has built a small cadre of fans thanks to its breezy performances and blend of comedy and tongue-in-cheek science fiction. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are thoroughly likable as a pair of San Fernando Valley sisters who find themselves completely alone after the arrival of Halley's Comet reduces their affluent community--and most of Los Angeles--to dust. Their subsequent nonstop shopping spree is soon interrupted by predatory zombies, as well as a sinister scientific cabal (led by cult favorites Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis) with designs on the girls. Stewart and Maroney are terrifically game as the heroines (especially Maroney, whose flair for bubbly comedy was never given another chance on screen), and Robert (Star Trek: Voyager) Beltran is also on hand as a fellow survivor and romantic lead. Fun for '80s enthusiasts and sci-fi fiends who don't mind a little fizz in their end-of-the-world scenarios. -- Paul Gaita

3 out of 5 stars All depends in what you want.......2007-09-01

If you want a scarry movie then forget it, for starters is a zombie movie where are less than 10 in all the film. The plot is really weak and you never be sacared.
The good thing...well, if you are fan of Catherine Mary Stewart or the 80`s you will enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO POLISHING A TURD???..........2007-08-24

Don't get me wrong. I looooooooove 'Night of the Comet'. It's one of my favorite B movies of all time, but where are the EXTRAS and at least...at the very, very, ve-rrrry least, give me a decent DVD cover. This one sucks. This type of production is bullcr#p; especially after all of the time I have waited for this!!!

Take for instance `Aqua Teen Colon Movie', that movie bites so hard and yet, it has a massively cool cover and it's TWO discs!!! I don't even have the season sets of Aqua Teen and I'm tempted to buy this movie just so I can see the DVD in my grubby hands. I am so very TIRED of this junk. If you're going to invest the money to bring these cult gems to the marketplace, please, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee, pleaseeeeeeee think about adding some kind of "cool factor" to it so I can at least feel good about buying it. Otherwise, keep the freakin' movie in obscurity where it freakin' belongs!!! You idiots!

And one more thing...leave your stupid freakin' distributor logo on the spine of the DVD art where it f'n belongs. Nobody wants to see that crud on every one of the DVD's in their collection. You guys are so stupid and you would think that being in business as long as you have, you'd know something about marketing to a specific demographic by now. At least you didn't slap some idiotic `special unrated extra comety edition' on the cover and a review by some obscure website praising the films nostalgic flavor or the usual garbage. GOD! I hate huge companies that have no respect for marketing. I mean, you could sell a million really really bad movies with just the minimalist of efforts towards your products packaging. You losers!

Anyway, the two stars are for the movie actually being released on DVD after a gazillion years and the negative three stars is for your half baked attempt at packaging this so that it would sell. Which, is to say, there was no attempt at all on your part to entice me therefore, I will ignore this as if it doesn't exist until a company like Anchor Bay can buy the rights and produce something worthy of purchase.

A suggestion to whomever greenlighted the packaging for this gar-bage..."Go jump off a bridge or shoot yourself in the face to correct this heinous of errors". You dolt!

5 out of 5 stars 80's Vally girls kill Zombies.......2007-08-12

I loved this movie when it came out and i loved seeing it again. FUN FUN FUN what more could you want in a sifi movie. Beautiful girls, the Living dead, and the world as your playground.

3 out of 5 stars Shopping Mall of the Apocalypse.......2007-08-11

This movie defies easy description. It mixes a valley girl comedy with a touch of THE OMEGA MAN. Mass population depletion, zombies, mad scientists, and video games; it's all here.

I first saw the movie when it came out in the theater. While I acknowledge that it is cheesy camp, it is fun cheesy camp! As soon as I heard that it was coming out on DVD, I couldn't wait to find a copy. While I am only rating it with three stars, I was tempted to go for four just because of the good memories I had from the film.

Catherine Mary Stewart, who we have seen in other 80s films like THE LAST STARFIGHTER and WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S, is lovely as always. Kelli Maroney plays her sexy younger sister. A young Robert Beltran (STAR TREK VOYAGER'S Chakotay) makes a good early appearance as a trucker who links up with the gun-toting teens.

To be honest, it would probably be a good idea to rent this film first; it isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea. For those who like it though, this is a definite nostalgic buy!

4 out of 5 stars Good ol' 80's fun.......2007-08-04

I watched this movie the first time as a kid. Watching it now I realize how much i've missed it. It may not have been the best 80's movie, but it was fun and it really was what got me first interested in sci-fi. I am happy it is on dvd, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Product Description

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

Amazon.com essential video

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

5 out of 5 stars Armageddon Rocks!.......2007-08-18

Armageddon is a movie about humanity's endless courage and resourcefulness; about our struggle and triumph over the cruel forces of nature that would exterminate us. Pity those who can't enjoy an epic sci-fi action movie with a great story. What could possibly be more exciting than a story about saving the world? Not all movies need deep and meaningful messages, not all movies need highly unexpected plot twists and certainly not all movies need to be 100% scientifically plausible. This movie is just plain FUN and that's all it needs. Michael Bay's movies often have a lot of explosions, destruction and devastation. Don't blame the director if you don't like that sort of genre. It's just the way his movies are and it's why me and my friends love them.

Armageddon, unlike its twin Deep Impact, cuts to the good part at the very beginning. A meteor shower devastates New York City in a spectacular fashion. Some of the meteors even punched a few holes in the World Trade Center although I guess no one thought it was a big deal at the time. It then turns out that the meteors were preceding a much bigger asteroid that will wipe out all life on Earth within 18 days unless a nuclear bomb can be detonated inside the asteroid to blow it apart. Bruce Willis plays Harry Stamper, the leader of the drilling team that's been hired to save the world. There are plenty of colorful characters on the team and the level of comic relief is strong enough to give this movie a warm atmosphere. Particularly funny is Peter Stormare's performance as a half-crazy Russian cosmonaut. That's not to say there are no sad moments since not everyone survives the mission. In addition to the main plot of going into space and blowing up the rock, there's also a love story between Harry's daughter Grace and Ben Affleck's character that Harry doesn't approve of. It is rather predictable, but then again, what love story isn't? There are quite a few `ticking-time-bomb' moments throughout the film, which make good thrills considering that the world is at stake.

Many have complained that Armageddon has many mistakes and scientific inaccuracies but that's really unavoidable considering the movie's far-fetched scenario. If you're not an astrophysicist then these things shouldn't bother you too much. Armageddon has a lot of special effects which is a good thing for a space movie. The Space Shuttles' flight through the meteor field is incredible. The scenery on the asteroid is very beautiful and the jagged cliffs and canyons create a stunning otherworldly environment.

I strongly recommend this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Wow this movie is stupid!.......2007-07-30

1 out of 5 stars A great sound and fury, signifying nothing........2007-07-27

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to ADD Theatre!

From what I recall of the press around this movie at the time it came out, there is not shot in this great stain on our cultural landscape that lasts more than five seconds. That might be fine if the shots that were in the film were of a higher quality. Alas, this is not the case.

This movie is loud, obnoxious, annoying and generally sucky. Its single redeeming virtue is that it's better than the American version of "Godzilla". Screening this film before detainees at Gitmo would likely constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention.

The SFX in the film are good, not great. The science is miserable. Not quite as bad as, say, having a shark roar, but bad. The acting is sub-par, which is really sad given the talent in this movie. The directing is about what you'd expect from Michael Bay. The man loves to use orange filters while shooting aircraft in flight. Don't even get me started about the overly jingoistic, rah-rah, Go, America!, nonsense at the end of the film.

This movie is a brutal, unforgiving, assualt on our senses and an insult to our intelligence. "Armageddon" came out at the same time as Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition), a far superior film covering much the same subject matter. If you wanna see an asteroid movie, watch that. Ignore this.

4 out of 5 stars Michael Bay Conspiracy.......2007-07-15

I'm beginning to think there is a internet conspiracy to smear Michael Bay movies. The same hateful and mindless attacks appear on many of Bay's movies, especially if Ben Affleck apears in them. Well, I think Armageddon is wonderful entertainment, and I've never come across anyone in person who hasn't been enthusiastic about the film.

Winner of the 1951 Academy Award for Best Special Effects, this science fiction extravaganza set a new standard for the realistic depiction of cinematic disasters. Of course, it's a quaint curiosity by today's technological standards, but as produced by visual effects pioneer George Pal, this story of Earth's collision with a runaway star is still a dazzling example of screen sci-fi from the '50s, when special effects were entering a new stage of advancement. Despite scientists' warnings about the star's destructive potential, government officials refuse to take action that could cause international panic, but a consortium of private industrialists prepare for the worst by building a gigantic spaceship--an ark for humanity to begin life anew on a distant planet. Who will be chosen to go, and who left behind? As earthquakes roar and massive tidal waves devastate entire cities, the huge rocket prepares for take-off from its miles-long launching ramp--ready to abandon the shattered Earth! Although it's more enjoyable now as a cinematic museum piece, When Worlds Collide remains a milestone of its kind, leading the way for many more screen disasters that followed this movie's still-worthy example. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic sc-fi thriller still packs a punch.......2007-08-19

One of the best sci-fi movies of the decade, it won the 1952 Academy award for best special effects, and I think, deserved it.

George Pal's directorial talents enabled him to take the classic end-of-the-world novel by Wylie and Balmer and turn it into a rivetting and dramatic movie. The team has only a year to design and build the ship, a herculean task, and must overcome discord and even treachery from within that threatens to derail the entire project. The spaceship design was both graceful and impressive, although the carriage design concept used in the dramatic launch sequence was never used in actuality, unlike the staged design in the other classic movie of the period, "The Conquest of Space," another Pal movie, where it was.

I read both When World's Collide and also its sequel, After World's Collide, and I think the movie more than does justice to the original book. Overall, it's one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade and an outstanding adaptation of the original novel. It has been said that Pal's films are some of the most optimistic ever made, and that certainly shows in this film as the survivors escape certain doom on earth only to find salvation on a beautiful and idyllic new world.

A little note on George Pal here. He studied to be an architect, but early 20th century Hungary (where George was from) apparently didn't need many architects, and so George never found work there. But they did need illustrators and cartoonists for the burdgeoning advertising and cartoon business, and George soon found a job at the famous UFA studio in Berlin. Within two months, he was in charge of the cartoon and illustration department, and the rest, as they say, is history.

5 out of 5 stars When Worlds Collide.......2007-08-13

The movie was just as good now as it was when I first saw it at nine yrs. old. Even my two teenage grandsons thought it was pretty good. Special effects especially.

4 out of 5 stars Another childhood favorite .......2007-08-06

I remember watching this film on TV when I was a kid. Now an adult, I rememember it being pretty scary. Well, if you can possibly ignore some of the cheesier special effects, it still is scary! Think about it. We are still hearing on the Discovery Channel (and the like) that there's a chance that a meteor or asteroid could very possibly cause earth catastrophic damage sometime in the future. Well, what if you suspend reality for 90 minutes and the future is actually within the next year. What would life on earth be like? How would everyone behave? It gave me the creepy crawlies again just thinking about it.

5 out of 5 stars me please.......2007-06-27

I had no problems with there service found them to be quick and efficent.Thank You.

4 out of 5 stars Classic early Sci-Fi.......2007-05-30

This 1951 film is a minor classic in the history of science fiction films.
The film has tended to be overlooked as it came out the same year as The Day the Earth stood still (which IS a better film). But if you look back prior to 1951 there is really only Metropolis which stands out.

The title explains everything about the plot. A passing planet is going to pass near the Earth and cause chaos, however it will be closely followed by its star which will destroy the Earth. A team of scientists have to build a Rocket to take a selected few from the Earth so that the human race can survive. This provides a lot of opportunities for various sub-plots about the morality of who should get a place on the Rocket.

Its only real flaw is the science, where the film just doesn't add up! For example when the star is getting very close this doesn't seem to raise the temperature on Earth all.....

The special effects now look incredibly primitive, but for the time they were brilliant. In 1951 at the Cinema, this film, which is in colour must have been absolutely stunning for the audience at that time. You might want to see it first before buying, but for me it is a milestone movie of its day.

A pilot crash-lands in the Sahara desert, and is surprised to meet a tiny prince with a sword... but who doesn't know the story of the beloved book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry? The slim philosophical classic has delighted millions, and the 1974 musical of the book has its own charms. Scored by the estimable team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe and directed by Stanley Donen, this is a tuneful piece of whimsy that's better in moments than it is overall. Two guest appearances energize the second half: Gene Wilder as a lonely fox, and the superbly slinky Bob Fosse as a salacious snake (Fosse choreographed his own number, a welcome touch of Cabaret amidst the whimsy). Some of the book's slight observations don't translate well to the literalness of the screen, but that won't matter to kids, who should be hooked from the very first "Draw me a sheep." --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Full of imagination, Great performance!.......2007-07-16

I first watch this one from the library and now I own it. It fulls of imagination. The performance is excellence especially the snake. My son at 3-1/2 enjoys it very much that he would ask many questions along. Good to add into your collection.

5 out of 5 stars At Last!.......2007-06-02

If you saw The Little Prince in the theater, you noticed that the voices were low and the music was loud. That was in addition to the imagery being a little fuzzy. Unfortunately, the VCR was no improvement. However, this DVD has the voice and music sound levels in sync and the images are fresh and crisp. It's like seeing The Little Prince for the first time! I would higly recommend this DVD - especially to previously disappointed fans. At last - the movie has been perfected.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fabolous musical and story!!!.......2007-03-04

I'm soo glad I bought this tape. The musical has some really great songs. It also has some great special effects for being made quite awhile ago. The story is brilliant. I love the song and dance sequence peformed by Bob Fosse as the Snake in the "Snake in the Grass". Wonderful, I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Fine Family Fare.......2007-02-26

I remember this movie opening to very mixed reviews back in 1974, and so I avoided it for over 30 years. But I recently reread the book (highly recommended for adults as well as children, by the way) and became curious about this adaptation. Although there are a couple of serious problems with this film, it is, on the whole, a surprisingly enjoyable and moving viewing experience. For the most part, the problems are limited to the first half of the film, so if you stick with it that long, the payoff is worth your while.

First of all, that Lerner and Lowe score is a mixed bag at best. But the score improves remarkably in the second half of the film, and the best of it is winning. Secondly, the depiction of the rose is flawed. Gene Wilder's Fox and Bob Fosse's Snake, both wonderful here, are able to step out of their animal skins once their characters are economically established. This frees up their performances considerably. We see their faces clearly, they interact with the Little Prince directly, movement helps define their characters. But the great dancer Donna McKechnie's entire performance as the Rose is horribly ill-conceived. Her image is projected onto a red petal, and as a result, she's murky, small, and, worst of all for a dancer, straight-jacketed. The fact that the connection between the Prince and his Rose is not more persuasive is problematic, since the Little Prince's love for the beautiful but petulant Rose informs almost all his actions.

That being said, the look and feel of this film is pitch-perfect. Stanley Donen wisely avoided the typical bloat to which most Hollywood musicals are susceptible. This Little Prince is intimate in scale. The musical numbers are mostly solos or duets. Nothing here overpowers the delicate plot. The art direction and special effects, particularly during the Prince's interplanetary travels, catch the eye. The performances, with the exception of the Rose (whose deficiencies are more the fault of the director than Ms. McKechnie), are praiseworthy. Richard Kiley is appealing and in fine voice as the Pilot. And Steven Warner is absolutely beguiling as The Little Prince.

Everything pulls together successfully for the last 45 minutes of this film and drives the audience to a touching finale. And about that snake bite: it is certainly meant to be transformative and transporting rather than suicidal. It makes complete sense within the context of this tale, and all but the youngest child will grasp this easily. The Little Prince's peals of laughter filling the night sky make it clear that he has arrived at home safely.

This is, overall, a winsome, faithful adaptation of the beloved children's book.

4 out of 5 stars Fits the Book well.......2007-01-05

I've read this book in English and French and it is one of my favorite French books--I hate modern French literature. I thought that this movie was charming, and also that it follows the book very well. I've shown it to my French classes and most of the students enjoy it. The only parts that I didn't like were the character of the rose although it fits the book and I hate Bob Fosse's bit. It was too long. Gene Wilder was great in his part. My favorite character was the Little Prince himself. I can't imagine a more perfect fit. My favorite "scenes" from the book were well represented. My three children watched and enjoyed it, but as one reviewer pointed out, there is a theme of child-suicide. My children did not catch it, but in retrospect it is obvious and disturbing, but that is what happens in the book. It is definately a point of discussion. It is not condoning suicide, but in the movie you are really left to sort it out yourself. Overall, I love this movie, but it is not oscar worthy.

4 out of 5 stars A quick review of Asteroid.......2007-09-03

I enjoyed this movie. I enjoy most movies with Annabella Sciorra. She plays an important scientist in this story about a threating Asteroid. If nothing else the movie should remind us of the need to know more. What will we do if this actually happens. We are not as prepared as we should be.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better.......2007-01-10

The theme of the movie is an overused concept. They could have done a better acting job, but it is entertaining. It is a good movie for collectors of disaster movies.

It has Michael Biehn in it so it is great - did see it on TV (and taped it) and wanted it without commercials also.

1 out of 5 stars Some Of The Worst Acting I've Seen In My Entire Life!.......2005-12-28

When the lead character acts like she's sleepwalking through the entire film, that's distracting! When just about anyone from my high school's drama class could do a much better job while brushing their teeth, then it's time to open up the wallet, and hire better talent.

Once you get past the special affects, all which use cheesy models, this godforsaken movie is boring as sin, or, should I say mud!

Beside being preposterous, for example, the meteoroid, or whatever, ONLY hits a dam in its first strike, this pitiful film is also delusional! Remember the scene where the head of FEMA risks his life to save someone who is obviously in danger of being wiped out by fire. As Hurricane Katrinia proves, there is no such thing as a bureaucratic, administrator hero! Instead, this movie comes off as a piece of not-so-subtle Federal government propaganda not worthy of a moment of your time!

The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie was released in 1991 under the title This Is the Super Saiya-jin, Son Goku. Goku and Krillin use their powers to deflect a giant asteroid from striking the Earth. But the asteroid is really the ship of the evil Lord Slug, who bullies Gohan and Bulma to get the Dragon Balls and obtain the eternal youth he desires. The newly regenerated Slug begins to "terrafreeze" Earth, killing inhabitants and transforming the planet into a gargantuan space vessel. During their inevitable duel, Goku learns that the now-gigantic Lord Slug is the last member of a race of "super Namek-jins." Goku eventually defeats him with some help from Gohan and Piccolo. For the U.S. release, Funimation has added an intrusive rock soundtrack--and five minutes of obnoxious commercials at the beginning of the tape. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Considerable cartoon violence, drug use. --Charles Solomon

3 out of 5 stars There Are Better DBZ Movies Than This..........2007-07-18

Lord Slug, one of the last remaining "Super Nameks", has come to Earth searching for the Dragonballs. Due to his increasing age, the day of his death draws near and he needs the power of the Dragonballs to grant him eternal youth. Now it's up to Goku and friends to protect the Dragonballs and stop Lord Slug from enslaving the entire Earth!

The plot of this movie is typical DBZ fare, and will not impress anyone who has seen any of the other movies or watched the series. Now this may seem like an unusual criticism considering that many of the plots used in Dragonball Z have been recycled from somewhere, but it just seems like this time around it was not done very well. The villain is uninteresting, the story is not very well paced, and the music does not fit in at all. The Japanese music often sounds dated compared to some of the American stuff that has been done for the series, but it probably would have been more appropriate than say Deftones or Disturbed would have. Now I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with these particular bands, I just don't feel that they belong in a DBZ movie. The dubbing is standard FUNimation voice work, and it does well enough to stay consistent with the series. This movie seems to take place around the middle of Frieza saga, as he does go Super Saiyan in this movie. However, Super Saiyan fans should not rejoice just yet, because it is not the same thing. One has to see it to understand, but Super Saiyan Goku does not look the same in this movie as he does in the series.

While this particular movie does have its faults, it's at least worth a look if you're a dedicated Dragonball Z fan. In fact, you may even purchase it if you're trying to collect them all. Just don't expect to watch it often.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite DBZ movie........2007-06-13

I consider myself a huge DBZ fan, and this is my favorite movie. Unfortunately, being the best DBZ movie isn't saying much. However, as far as the single-mindedness of the DBZ movies go, this is the most entertaining. Since it was released in America at the height of the DBZ craze, it benefits from probably the highest production values. Most notably, the music. It features music from Disturbed and Deftones, which are implemented well.

    Fun Fact:
Even the edited version of Lord Slug that was shown on Adult Swim featured the Uncut version of a Disturbed song, so the F-Word was actually on Cartoon Network. Somebody should lose there job over that. Haha.

3 out of 5 stars The worst DBZ movie?.......2007-03-20

This movie is by far nowhere near the worst DBZ movie. That spot is reserved for Bio Broly. Nobody can deny that the plot in this one was used already but the action more than makes up for this. The earth was about to be destroyed by a passing comet. Goku and Krillin save the planet from destruction. This is only a prelude for the things to come. A group of warriors invade the earth led by Lord Slug. This results in a very heated battle between Goku and Lord Slug. The battle was good from beginning to end. It also had a pretty decent soundtrack. The only problem with this movie is the same problem with all the movies. It just doesn't fit in the timeline. Still it was a pretty solid movie, and saying that its unwatchable is bananas. If your a fan take advantage of that cheap price and pick this up.

3 out of 5 stars Japanese Version rocks, english version okay.......2007-01-04

Okay I've heard alot about DBZ movie 4- Lord Slug over the years, from it being the worse DBZ movie to date,to being unwatchable. Well I finally decided to check it out,and I have to say this movie is pretty good. I watch the english version of the movie first and it was okay, the voice acting is pretty good. The only regrets that I have concerning the english version and the reason I gave this movie 3 stars instead of 5 is because, the music is not that good for the english version, you might have a couple of music cues that are good, but nothing to be giddy about. Also, for some strange reason, the people at funimation always tend to put corney dialogue in and say things that just aren't ment to be said,or for that matter just doesn't make since. After I watch the english version,I immediatley went back and watch the japanese version,it was like a rebirth of some sorts, because the music was great and the dialogue made perfect since, and situatons were explain more clearly. Why funi didn't use the japanese script instead of the english one I will never know. If funi had kept the original japanese score along with the japanese script the english version would've been awesome! Maybe they'll rerelease all the DBZ movies and have the option of listening to at least the japanese track along with the english voice cast, and knowing the way funi likes to make money they probably will.

3 out of 5 stars Totally average as far as Dragon Ball Z movies go.......2006-10-11

Lord Slug (1991.) The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie.

    INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.

    OVERVIEW:
Dragon Ball Z Movie Four, Lord Slug, was released in Japan on March 19, 1991. The movie was first released in America on August 7, 2001. It is the fourth of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies. The original Japanese title translates to something like "Super Saiya-Jin Son Goku." The opening for the Japanese version of the movie is Cha La Head Cha La, but it's the alternate, movies-only opening ending with the scene of Goku holding his bow. The ending animation features newly-created footage of the characters, and a unique piece of music.

    THE STORY:
The time period is one following the fight against Nappa and Vegeta, and one before the Z fighters depart for Namek. It is also set after Movie Three, The Tree Of Might, since Gohan's dragon appears. Earth is nearly pummeled by a meteor, but Kamehameha blasts by Goku and Krillin save the day. But this was only the beginning of the problem. From the meteor comes Lord Slug, an aging but still super-powerful evil Namekian. He has his sights set on capturing the Earth and turning it into his new mobile base planet, as well as getting the Dragon Balls to reclaim his youth.

    REVIEW OF STORY:
Many people say this is the worst Dragon Ball Z movie. I'm not necessarily saying they're wrong, but I am going to say that they are far too critical and harsh. I found it to be quite enjoyable. Definitely not the best Dragon Ball Z movie, but still far from being a bad one. The greatest strength of this movie would have to be the battle scenes involving Piccolo. I won't spoil anything here, but he has some awesome scenes. And let's not forget the classic "Whistle Of Doom" so many fans speak highly of. Classic stuff. Sadly, when people say the movie is plagued with weaknesses, they aren't totally wrong. The main bad guy is underdeveloped as a character, as are his henchmen. This alone makes the movie less fun to watch. And let's be realistic, the whole "alien invader" thing has been done to death, and not just in Dragon Ball Z. In some places, this feature feels like a really cheesy fifties science fiction movie. The movie also tends to drag on longer than necessary. And the ending... let's just say it's not much different than the ending to the two movies that followed this one. And despite the (original Japanese) title of the film, Goku never becomes a Super Saiyan in the movie (though he does come close at one point.) What it comes down to is an average Dragon Ball Z movie. Not horrible, not great.

    OFFICIAL?
I don't consider any of the movies official to the Dragon Ball Z storyline, since Akira Toriyama himself didn't create them, not to mention the fact they don't usually fit into the storyline. This is no exception. The small gap between the Saiyan and Frieza sagas is the only time this one could take place, but Piccolo (who was killed by Nappa) is alive, automatically rendering it false. And Gohan's dragon appears, who was introduced in the non-canon Tree Of Might movie. As such, this movie could only take place in an alternate universe in which no good guys are killed in the Saiyan Saga, and in which Tree Of Might also took place.

    REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Why couldn't get get interviews with cast and crew, or trivia/facts, something like that? FUNimation has a lot of room to improve on the DVDs.

    THE DUBBED VERSION:
Lots of people tend to bash FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Z series? Why? It's inaccurate and sometimes just plain stupid. Not to mention there are times when the choice of voice actors is questionable. They have a tendency to add in too much unneeded extra dialogue. For instance, following the scene where Piccolo yells at Gohan to stop whistling, in the original Japanese version he says nothing more, while in the dub he APOLOGIZES AND TELLS HIM THE WHISTLING WASN'T BAD? WTF!? That's not the Piccolo I know and love. And did I neglect to mention that FUNimation rerecorded the whistling? Not a really big deal, but it was widely expected that the original whistling would be kept intact in the dub. Another example is Bulma looking up after the meteor scene when the fragments are falling to Earth. She's ENJOYING IT in the dub, saying it's pretty. This is a total change from the real version in which she's in a total state of shock. There's stupid dialogue around every corner in the dub. Why is it FUNimation can do great dubbed versions of other animes (Full Metal Alchemist comes to mind) but they can't ever do it for Dragon Ball Z? Topping off the crap fest that is the dubbed version is the music. We don't get the original Japanese music in the dubbed version. We get some rather lame, standard-fare instrumental sequences (if you've watched it on Cartoon Network you'll know what I'm talking about.) And that's not the worst of it. The soundtrack is NU METAL. Come on! If I want to listen to Disturbed, I'll pop in their CD. This kind of music has no place in Dragon Ball Z, and it greatly detracts from the original intended movie. Do I even have to say it? Watch the Japanese version.

    OVERALL:
Overall this is a good package. Not the best Dragon Ball Z move, and certainly not the best DVD release of Dragon Ball Z content, but overall I'm satisfied. It's not one of the best movies, however, so I really can only recommend this one to die-hard fans of the series who can't get enough.

    EDITION NOTES:
Two versions of this were released: Edited and Uncut. Obviously, buy uncut. The DVD isn't as readily available as it once was, but is still fairly easy to find. Used stores that buy anime DVDs, online and in-person, should have it.

3 out of 5 stars Title doesnt Match emotion in movie.......2007-07-27

OK, Basically the movie was entertaining but it was more like a movie of the week on TV. The acting was pretty weak. And there was an undertone of a gay theme. Unfortunaetly it didnt to be there. It had no impact in the movie at all.

    4 out of 5 stars Gay Heroes.......2007-07-06

I really liked this movie. I'm very glad I purchased it. I have watched most of the movies dealing with asteroids and I feel this movie was equal to the best of them. And it was nice to see gay heroes in a movie that was not a gay movie. They just happened to be gay. Very cool!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, excellent.......2007-05-10

I really liked this movie because of the gay theme and positive story. There are many "mainstream" movies out there with gay characters that are not positive at all. This story shows the gay men in a positive way and doing something with purpose. What it also shows is how the military discharges men and women, and in this case men who are gay because they are gay. The main character was sick of "living a lie" within the military and came out. It was then that they discharged him. You can be hetrosexual and advertise it to everyone, but let someone say that they are gay and they are discharged from the military. Granted this is a B thriller movie, but in my book it is A+. I recommend everyone seeing this movie. If for nothing else, to see a gay positive movie that does have a happy ending.

2 out of 5 stars Gay opening scenes in the US but not in other countries.......2007-02-19

Made for the gay Here! cable network, the opening scenes of Deadly Skies show the principal characters in a gay relationship that is then not referenced again as the drama unfolds. Other countries (Canada, UK) have a shorter film without the gay scenes. Like Dante's Cove on the same network, the gay scenes are, I guess, suppose to excuse the limited scope of the plot and the acting. Unfortunately they don't.

    3 out of 5 stars Gay...by the Way.......2007-02-14

    "Deadly Skies"

    Gay.....By the Way

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

I am not a fan of thriller movies but there was something about "Deadly Skies" that drew me to it (and I am not talking about a nude Anthony Sabato. Strangely constructed, this vie, is a slick science fiction drama that happens to have a gay hero who also happens to have a lover. But here is where the gay content lays---two brief scenes in a bedroom and several glossed over pieces of dialog. The fact that there are gay characters in the movie is purely incidental and certainly not central nor crucial to the story. Since the movie is not the kind that I usually enjoy, it is hard to be objective about it. The acting is good enough but the dialog and storyline are not much more than adequate. In other words, there is not much good or bad to say about it. It is just a movie that I would not rush out to see but if it were to be broadcast on TV, I would watch it with no problem.
A giant asteroid is heading toward the earth with the potential of being able to destroy it unless the logistics of it can be figured out. Rae Dawn Chong can figure this out but for some reason the government does not seem to want to hire her. Chong knows that her friend, played by Sabato, can save the planet. When she goes to speak with him, she finds him and his lover not only naked but in the middle of having sex. (It is a very mild scene). Why the movie had to have a gay sex scene, I really do not know because as I said before, nothing is much said about the gay characteristic of the film. I am not discounting the eye candy--it is great but I am not sure why it is even there.
One of the controversies of the film is that it has been released under three different names and in each the content (about the gay parts) is a little different. If you cannot find this movie as "Deadly Skies", look for it as "Ultimate Limit" or "Force of Impact".
In summary it is an anti-military paranoia film with a great deal of pacifistic self-righteousness. I enjoyed it as a brief getaway from life but when it was over, it was over.

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving.

I love this movie! Wow, this movie has all the qualities I want in a movie - love, loyality, comedy, friendship, drama and heroism. The unique blend of actors and their characters makes Armageddon a movie I want to watch again and again! Thank you Amazon for having this for purchase online!

What is Armageddon? Well Wrap your head in an American flag, loop "dont wanna miss a thing" by Arrowsmith at full volume, and have a friend poke both your eyes and box your ears.. there you have it

Yoshikazu Yasuhiko directed this 1989 feature based on his own manga. The new frontier of Venus has degenerated into a dystopia ravaged by the civil war between Ishtar and Aphrodia. Bubbly reporter Susan Sommers arrives in the capitol of Aphrodia just before it's captured by Ishtar. She falls in with a bunch of teen-agers who live for a sort of motorcycle version of Roller Derby. Daredevil rider Hiro and his friends reluctantly join the struggle to free Aphrodia from the invaders. Not surprisingly, Hiro proves an ace at piloting the mono-cyles that are the Aphrodians' secret weapon in the key battle. Venus Wars holds better than many early anime features. The American-influenced designs may annoy purists, but the characters are well developed and the battle scenes well staged, despite the limited technological resources available at the time. (Rated 13 and older: violence, profanity, alcohol use, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

    Description

On the hostile world of Venus, where vicious gangs roam the streets and nations battle for supremacy, a hotshot motorcycle jockey and a feisty Earth journalist are caught in the crossfire as war erupts.

3 out of 5 stars This war could have happened on Neptune or Earth.......2007-06-18

This is a mixed bag for me. Its not a bad anime but it was nothing breathtaking for me either. What little it had was entertaining. To include the very cheap price I paid for it was worth it.

Venus Wars didn't have a very interesting story to me. The characters weren't very likeable to me either, regardless how developed some of them were. The saving grace was the plot. Venus is inhabited by humans. It was later invaded by humans. The invasion was very quick and decisive. It took no time for marshall law to set in. A few digruntled rebels decided to put a plan together and fight. I'm sure you can figure what happens next.

The battles consist of high speed chases and an all out war. I don't think this anime would satisfy all action junkies. The level of gore is non existent and the blood is minor. So to all you out there expecting to see exploding heads and bullet breakdancin' bodies can forget it. Yet the battles still manage to be decent. A remastered version would've defintly helped the animation. I rarely touch the animation but this is one of the few times I felt it could have been cleaned up some. At some points it just seemed overly dark and outdated to me.

This is a pretty good buy for the cheap price. If you want something straightforward and easy to follow then this is your anime.

    5 out of 5 stars Cool Movie.......2007-05-31

I first watched this movie on T.V. and I was in love with it. I found it better then Robotech and the cat Voltron. It has a great storyline and the action parts are awesome. If you are looking for a good story and some good anime then this is it, There is also a manga for those people who love to read the graphic novels.

5 out of 5 stars High-quality, serious story line, good visuals appeal.......2007-04-17

Let me keep this short and sweet. I really like the movie because of the well developed story and the overall feel. It easily ranks with classics like Bubble Gum Crisis, and live action films like Terminator. There is an 80s feel to it, but it is not cheesy in any way. A+

3 out of 5 stars Not Robotech style action but entertaining........2006-07-29

Is a good anime because is HIGH BUGET ACTION-PACKED. But it wasn't cool as Robotech (Macross), the action scenes weren't THAT fast, the kid (main character) doesn't shoot to many bad guys with his "battle-motorcycle" and there wasn't to much battle war shooting like in Robotech.

The action is top notch because the motorcycle runnings were cool, and the action scenes are very reailistic with tons of shooting but not on the battle wars (only on the normal action scenes). And of course, the drama is great with an easy storyline to follow.

The dvd wasn't good because the anime wasn't remastered, so the colors can be dark and annoying sometimes.

    Adios.

    4 out of 5 stars Actually it's 3.5 but I'd give it a four...........2005-12-26

I watched this on TV and I will give a review. I watched it because there wasn't anything better on. So it's about a hostile takeover in Venus and a group of ordinary people try to survive the war-torn planet. I liked this movie it gave a nice amount of action and it has this feel in a war movie where all you give a damn is wi
