No Justice Like Street Justice.......2006-11-14
When I first watched this movie, I didn't really like it. I thought it was corny and there wasn't enough gore exploitation. Upon second and third viewing with a group of friends it turned out to be more fun like watching a live cartoon. I've seen some horrible B-movies that are not even worth the time but "Savage Streets" delivers the goods in more ways than one. Outrageous dialogue and action sequences, Linda Blair's nipples peaking through her shirt in the opening sequence, unwanted boom mike appearance,Establishing shot of a Doctor's Hospital that literally spells it out! This cartoon tone stays throughout the movie even in moments when it shouldn't. Like Linda Blair grieving with her friends in a nightclub LOL. If you can throw all logic out the window, then sit back and enjoy the show. Linda Blair gives a good performance as usual and the soundtrack is pretty nice vintage 80's rock. I just wish the violence was a little more graphic than implied. They could of took advantage of the R rating a litte bit.
masterpiece, the greatest movie of the 80s.......2006-02-17
Holy God, this is truly a work of art. Danny Steinmann is an underrated master of cinema. He has done some of the best film ever made. Friday the 13th part V is one of them. This movie got everything, sexy Linda Blair doing nude scenes, plenty of action, an awesome soundtrack. This flick deserves to be on dvd with plenty of extras. Watch Linda Blair as she goes against a gang of nasty bad guys and try to avenge her sister's rape. Classic stuff here everyone! It 's a crying shame that this movie is out of print. Try to find it and you will love it, at least if you have good taste in movies.
masterpiece **** out of ****
meet Danny Steinmann.......2006-01-03
[good things]
It was a great revenge flick, with a great performance by Linda Blair. Linnea Quigley had a supporting non-speaking role that she did an awesome job with, plus she was absolutely adorable in this movie. It was a typical 80's movie, and since it was done by an ex-porn director (Steinmann) it had that element as well, alot of gratuitus nudity and bush shots.
[the bad]
The movie seemed to a bit too sleazy, turning it into more of a softcore movie than anything else. Could have used more blood.
[final thoughts]
I think this movie was more an exploitation film than anything else. There was a bit too much nudity, it seemed like scenarios were invented just to fit nudity in the mix (i.e. the fight in the shower). I still like this movie alot though, Linda Blair and Linnea Quigley do an excellent job despite the lack-lustre directing and screen writing. There are about a handful of scenes where you can see the boom-mic come down int he shot-- oops.
Actually very good.......2005-10-17
This was a surprisingly good movie, with descent acting,a great plot, and an equally satisfying lead actress. Linda Blair stars as Brenda in this motion picture and adds a lot to the movie as well as the role. In the end, all i can say is that you should give this movie a chance, like i did.
Alternately campy & powerful: these punks really are savages.......2004-12-27
It's tough to get a fix on this movie: it's a boisterous, R-rated camp-fest one minute(featuring a group of kids, including Linda Blair, who look far too old to still be in high school)and an unabashedly brutal trash-flick the next. It has more spirit and drive than Linda's "Chained Heat", and the kids' inter-relationships and tough talks with the school principal are cynically amusing, but the much-discussed rape scene is extremely nasty, as is the sequence with the girl on the bridge. Suddenly these hot-shot punks become murderous, psychotic thugs--yet the tone of the picture never changes. The images are very disturbing, the violence boardering on realistic, but the director keeps it all hopping mad--like a nihilistic cartoon.

As is the case with many of director Spike Lee's films, especially the better ones, the issue of race is at the center of Sucker Free City, a 2004 pilot for an original Showtime series. In this instance, the tension is both inter- and intra-racial, as Lee and writer Alex Tse focus on three displaced young men from three very separate San Francisco cultural groups: Nick (Ben Crowley), a white kid with a straight day job and a couple of criminal hustles on the side; Keith, aka K-Luv (an exceptional performance by Anthony Mackie), a member of the African-American gang the V-Dubs; and Lincoln (Ken Leung), a junior member of the Chinese Mafia who spends most of his time extorting payoffs from local businesses. That these three and their respective crews will eventually cross paths is inevitable, but it happens in ways both expected (when Nick's family moves into the predominantly black Hunter's Point neighborhood, they're immediately harassed, and worse, by the V-Dubs) and otherwise (K-Luv's aspirations as a CD bootlegger leads to alliances of a sort with both Nick and Lincoln). The cast is sizeable (look for a brief but effective turn by Jim Brown), and while the potential for rampant stereotyping is there, Lee and Tse deftly avoid it; K-Luv, for instance, is clearly unsettled by the violent ways of the V-Dubs, and his palpable inner conflict emerges in some very surprising ways. Gritty and unflinching (the film's violence is considerable but not especially graphic; the profanity is virtually non-stop), Sucker Free City mostly rings true. Alas, Showtime chose not to pick up the series, so one can only wonder what further episodes might have revealed. --Sam Graham
Description
Sucker Free City is an original film directed by Spike Lee that takes a riveting look at the seductive, dangerous world and life choices of a diverse group of young people inextricably caught up in the unique gang culture of San Francisco. When racial tension erupts and emotions collide three young men from different ethic backgrounds perpetrate low-level crimes that eventually infringe upon each other's neighborhoods. As their lives intersect on the streets, will they come to realize they are not all that different from one another or will they fight to keep their neighborhoods?

Only half way there.......2007-01-24
This movie tries to show the 'real' life of San Francisco's communities, white, black and Chinese and the 'gangs' within them. The idea here is to do a sort of 'Snatch' where three sub-plots are interwoven. However the great failing here is the terrible acting of the white and asian 'gangs'. It turns out that the only portion of the film that is portrayed in all its grit and tragedy is the black community. For some reason it is as if the director was out of touch with the white and asian communities, which was probably the case and couldnt write for those actors or direct them. Thus the movie get sby on being a 'Spike Lee Joint' but fails in two out of three story lines. Despite attempts to get away from stereotypes regarding the Chinese in fact the film reinforces them and the characters are bland. The only truly honest character in the film is the father of the white family whose liberal pacifist 'the bars on our windows offend our african-American neighbors and force them to break into our house' truly mirrors what takes place among a certain class of people in America. However it doesnt ring true that such a person would end up living in a 99% Black ghetto, just another unrealistic twist. Also unrealisitc is why the white protagonist is working at an investment bank and living with his family. His sister is described as a 'hippie' but isn't one. There are virtually no female characters portrayed in the film and the three that are only seem to fulfill the roles of being promiscous. There is only one line in the entire film devoted to a young black female actress.
Basicaly a film that only gets half way there. It supposedly portrays attempts at 'coexistence' and the trouble people have breaking out of their community and stereotypes but fails in many respects to depict reality. There is no racism portrayed among the Asian 'mafia' and yet this is obviously another terrible fallacy. At least the film depicts in brutal honesty the racism among Blacks towards whites entering 'their' community.
Also it leaves one wondering where the hispanic-latino community is in all this. Hispanics now make up 50% of California and there are many Latino gangs and yet they dont seem to have a role in this film apparently, again, because no one knew how to write their part into it. The only hispanic role in the film is of the police investigator, which is better than nothing one supposes.

Solid movie - accurate potrayal.......2006-03-31
A someone who lived in San Francisco for ten years and spent time in the Mission, Chinatown, and Hunters Point, this movie is not only entertaining, it's also an extremely accurate portrayal of life in these particular neighborhoods.
If you're a San Franciscan, you've got to see it. If you're not from SF, but are curious about what's beyond the tourist brochures, this movie is it.
The only thing missing is documentation of the insanely corrupt political culture of the city, but hey, the film maker covered a lot of ground.
Great movie if you keep in mind it was a pilot.......2005-12-27
Great movie about three guys, black, white and asian growing up in the streets of San Francisco and how their paths cross. This was supposed to be an ongoing series comparible to The Wire but Showtime dropped it. The story is therefore unresolved and leaves you waiting for the next episode. Hopefully someone at HBO reads this and they pick it up.
Awesome! - Real! - Exceptinal film making!.......2005-12-12
I'll keep it short and sweet: This movie is a must see. I'm not really a Spike Lee fan but he really nails the social/racial conflicts that exist in America today, as the three main characters(a White, Black and an Asian guy) cross paths.
A must have for any dvd collection!
