4 out of 5 stars Four Star DVD, Two Star Movie.......2007-09-13

"How bad can it be?" asked one reviewer here. The answer is "Pretty bad." This is probably the worst adaptation done of Conan-Doyle's classic novel, primarily because producer/director Irwin Allen's approach was so juvenile, but I doubt the movie was meant to be more than a Saturday matinee feature. It looks and feels cheap, with lizards and baby alligators used as stand-ins for dinosaurs. One of the effects technicians was -- unbelievably -- Willis "King Kong" O'Brien, who also worked on the classic 1925 silent version of "Lost World." This must have been a very depressing experience for him. I know that one of the film's star's, David Hedison, has said several times that he was depressed making this movie. All that said, if you saw this as a small kid, you probably have fond nostalgic memories of it, and it can be enjoyed on a purely kitsch level, though you really have to be masochistic to get into this sort of cinematic schlock. Surprisingly, Fox video has done a really nice job presenting this feature on DVD. The anamorphic transfer of the Cinemascope film looks as good as it possibly could and the old-fashioned 4-channel stereo sound is nicely rendered in 4.0 Dolby Digital. The extras include all that any fan of this movie could want, with the exception of interviews with surviving cast members and a running commentary by someone who cares -- but perhaps that would have been asking too much? Instead you get an interactive pressbook --a very nice feature that Fox has just staring including on its recent library reissues --, a rather lame little "featurette" from the period, an ad and concept art gallery, and a still gallery that plays for an incredible -- or perhaps interminable? -- nine minutes! And, of course, the original theatrical trailer. (This is a 2-disc release. The second disc contains the silent, yet superior, 1925 version. I can not attest as to that discs qualities because, you see, I merely rented disc one from Netflix. No way I'd buy this Irwin Allen "masterpiece." Sorry, but I'd rather spend my money on something else.) But wait, there's more... a vintage Fox Movietone Newsreel segment showing the NYC premiere at the Warner Theatre in July 1960. A smiling David Hedison is shown signing autographs for an audience of -- what else? -- prepubescent kids and their moms. Hedison looks really happy to be there. Now that's great acting!

5 out of 5 stars The Lost World.......2007-09-03

I have always loved Sir Arthur Canon Doyle's best known works, the Sherlock Holmes stories. My favorites among these are the Universal Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Though these are not true to Doyle's original writings, Rathbone and Bruce did an outstanding job in their respective roles. The 1960 version of The Lost World is in my opinion the best. It does differ from Doyle's original novel. What makes this film great is the excellent performances by Claude Rains, Michael Rennie and David Hedison. Rains is a legend with such masterpieces under his belt as Sir John Talbot in the Wolfman and the title role as The Phantom of the Opera. David Heddison will go on to a very successful role as the Captain of Seaview in Irwin Allen's TV Series in Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

4 out of 5 stars No Comparison.. just enjoy..made in 1960 not 2007.......2007-08-26

When I was 7 years old I thought that this was indeed the greatest movie so far..except the 7th voyage of sinbad. How can we compare a vintage movie from 1960 to the special effects we have today. At 54 years old now. who cares that the horns are pasted on the lizards and all that. Enjoy this movie for it's escapism and adventure.I wonder sometimes how anyone can enjoy a movie picking it apart all the time. I guess you had to be there in 1960.

3 out of 5 stars A Favorite .......But Not Great.......2007-08-09

A true Cinemascope film, hopefully the DVD release by Fox (unlike the VHS version) will actually be letterboxed in the correct ratio as stated in the above product details. You couldn't find a more obvious example of 'pan and scan' editing than the scene where David Hedison is dodging the lunging dinosaur while climbing the rock wall (he hugs the wall, dinosaur's head pops into view, pops out of view, back to Hedison, then to dinosaur, pops back into view, etc.) As to the movie itself, though a childhood favorite (I must have seen it 25 times between the theater and on TV) it promises more than it delivers. When you're 12 years old looking for adventure involving dinosaurs, this filled the bill, even though you knew that they weren't like the dinosaurs in your playset, books or King Kong. It was big and colorful. That probably won't be good enough for today's kids; the big won't be there on the small screen and color is taken for granted. And no CGI. I'll pass without comment on those lizard "dinosaurs" as well as Jill St. John's dog. I'll get it because of nostalgia and to finally see it again in 'scope.

4 out of 5 stars This is a double feature!.......2007-07-22

According to the Fox Store, this DVD also contains the 1925 silent version of Lost World, with Wallace Berry, Lewis Stone (Judge Hardy), and Bessie Love. A DVD of this film is available from Image Entertainment, but costs as much as this DVD. I've never seen the 1960 version, but with Raines, Rennie, and Lamas together, how bad can it be?

A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-13

This movie is one of the great classics that everyone should see at least once.

5 out of 5 stars quite simply the best film ever!.......2007-09-10

In my humble opinion this is the best film ever. Stellar acting and incomparable chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Paul Henreid exudes class and bravery. The incomparable Claude Rains. A witty screenplay, taut direction and an emotinal core that builds throughout the film right up to the most memorable ending of all-time. Play it again, and again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Only the best!.......2007-09-09

A great movie must have certain components: (1) great acting, (2) action, (3) humor, (4) a compelling plot, and (5) a memorable song. This movie has all five and ranks, in my opinion, as the Best American Movie of the 20th Century.

3 out of 5 stars Good but definitely not the best.......2007-09-06

I was very excited when i first watched this movie because it is almost on top of lists of all-time greatest movies and the reviews are like wow.. this must be really one of the best! After watching it, I was kinda disappointed because I think the story is so-so, there is no chemistry between the two lead cast (but Bergman is very lovely though). I don't know what's so special about this movie. Did I miss it or what?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie, excellent presentation and special features.......2007-08-15

At 55 years of age, you'd think a movie lover such as myself would have seen Casablanca... but I hadn't until I bought this disc in July of 2007. If you understand what makes a finely crafted film that you can watch repeatedly and still continue to find things out about it that you love, this is one you'll enjoy immensely.

Start with the script - it is filled with tasty classic lines you'll really enjoy hearing in the context of the film. "Here's looking at you, Kid..." for example. Part of what makes all of it work is the vocal treatment by the actors in their delivery. The cast seems very comfortable with the characters they each play and so maybe that relaxed feel carries over to the degree of realism you sense when you watch it. Their dialogue does NOT seem scripted and that's hard to achieve on a consistent basis in a film. I suppose that's a big part of what's made Casablanca such a classic to all who have reviewed the work over the years.

The acting is superb across the board regardless of how small the part. Ingrid Bergman is luminescent to put it mildly. Bogie is really a powerhouse in this one, and Paul Henreid as well as Claude Rains deliver the kind of intimately detailed performances that just make you smile while you watch. Peter Lorre has a smaller part but exquisitely crafted in its execution. He makes it easy for you to hate him, let's put it that way. Sydney Greenstreet gives a solid presentation as well to round out the core ensemble performances given here.

The special features on this disc include a very nice introduction by Lauren Bacall, Bogart's widow. I watched it AFTER viewing the film as I wanted to get the same feel as audiences who originally viewed it in the theater, but I wish I had watched it first. Enlightening to say the least.

Another little gem is a series of trailers for Bogie's other movies. Great slices of the period as far as movie promotion goes! They serve as great reminders of a simpler time in America.

This particular film is a MUST HAVE for anyone's movie collection. I feel that repeated viewings year on year will only make you love it more than you did the first time. Not many films are able to do that.

I can safely say that if you, too, love truly great movies and you decide to purchase this one, it will be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Description

Through the powerful recollections of atomic bomb survivors, White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, an extraordinary new film by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki, presents a deeply moving look at the painful legacy of the first -- and hopefully last -- uses of thermonuclear weapons in war. Featuring interviews with fourteen atomic bomb survivors - many who have never spoken publicly before - and four Americans intimately involved in the bombings, White Light/Black Rain provides a detailed exploration of the bombings and their aftermath. In a succession of riveting personal accounts, the film reveals both unimaginable suffering and extraordinary human resilience.Â

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must See.......2007-09-14

This is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen on the aftermath of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It should be viewed by mature audiences only.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to watch and very important.......2007-08-28

As I sat watching the footage of little kids with their skin pulled off of their bodies I was reminded of Elizabeth Hasselbeck on the VIEW calling innocent victims of war "collateral damage".

People who hear of atrocities during wartime and say "well that's just war" need to see films such as these. These Men, Women and Children were not in the military. They didn't sign up to give their lives to this war. They were going about their business when they were bombed.

You know it was horrible by the fact that almost all the survivors said they were begging others to let them die because surviving was so painful physically and emotionally.

In U.S. public schools this topic is only mentioned as "we bombed them and they surrendered". It is swept under the carpet really quickly. Somehow by talking about what we did is seen as unpatriotic or something.

The U.S. dropping these bombs was a horrific act. We have to ackowledge that fact. Was it necessary? I can't answer that. It brought an end to a horrible war. Do the ends justify the means?

At least a film like this educates us further on what did happen and the ramifications.

5 out of 5 stars No Words.......2007-08-21

This is the most moving documentary I have ever seen. We see the destruction of Nagasaki and Hiroshima from the eyes of its survivors, and what you see will no doubt leave you haunted. It's not often that people will put themselves into another's shoes and (almost) understand what they have experienced. Hiroshima may have been a "triumph" for the US in the war, but it was most certainly a living nightmare to the innocent people that were caught in the destruction. I could not make it through the documentary without crying and most people tell me I am callous when it comes to expressing emotions. What truly amazes me is the complete lack of empathy, to this day, from some of the men who dropped the bomb. I understand that they were just doing their job (I also have a husband in the military) but at one point one of them even boasts that he has never had a nightmare or regret about dropping the bomb: "I've never had a nightmare!", he laughs. Definitely a documentary that makes you think.

4 out of 5 stars View at your own risk.......2007-08-16

I can't say I loved this - which is what I reserve 5 stars for. But who could love such horrendous footage? That said, the spell-binding footage had me glued to the screen, unable to move. I've done my share of reading about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and seen some documentaries - but this beats them all.

Actual footage of bodies shortly after the bomb dropped, reduced to body shaped ash. Survivor art drawn by children. Interviews with adult survivors. Footage of American doctors studying the after-effects - WITHOUT TREATING THEM. Horrendous. Horrendous.

And yet, the survivors exist. The film actually opens with interviewers asking young people on the street of Japan if they could answer the question, "Do you know what happened on August 6, 1945?" Incredulously, none of the young people asked in that clip had any idea. I'm sure they had heard of the bomb. They just didn't remember the date. But imagine!

Obviously, there are young people who do know, because there is another clip of young Japanese nationals staging a die-in in remembrance. Good for them. We should all remember, before we get too full of ourselves as Americans. We have made more than our share of mistakes.

Let's not make any more.

Black Rain

5 out of 5 stars A horribly touching documentary........2007-08-11

I've cried every time I have seen this. The atomic bombing of Japan becomes personalized when the very few survivors tell their stories. This documentary truly shows you the destructive capability many countries have now amassed, and why we should never use it.

Political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant U.S. Senate chair. Surely this naive bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable and corrupted career politician. Director Frank Capra fills the movie with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington, all of which ring false for his cynical secretary (Jean Arthur), who doesn't believe for a minute this rube could be for real. But he is. Capra was repeating the formula of a previous film, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, but this one is even sharper; Stewart and Arthur are brilliant, and the former cowboy star Harry Carey lends a warm presence to the role of the vice president. Bright, funny, and beautifully paced, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is Capra's ode to the power of innocence--an idea so potent that present-day audiences may find themselves wishing for a new Mr. Smith in Congress. The 1939 Congress was none too thrilled about the film's depiction of their august body, denouncing it as a caricature; but even today, Capra's jibes about vested interests and political machines look as accurate as ever. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Political Appreciation Movie!.......2007-05-06

Jimmy Stewart is fabulous in this movie! His wonderment of everything in D.C. is enough to inspire anyone about our great nation. As a novice of all things political, he comes to Washington as a new senator, determined to build a boys camp where they can have more opportunities to learn and grow. With growing opposition from other senators, even one that he once trusted, Jefferson Smith (Stewart) he rallies against impossible odds to not only get the bill passed, but to gain respect from the other senators and show that good things still happen in American Governement, if we only believe and never give up. Very inspirational!

5 out of 5 stars The Lincoln Memorial.......2007-04-24

The following review contains SPOILERS regarding the film's ending:

This spring I had the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. for the first time. Of the entire trip, my most special moment was when I saw where my favorite President, Abraham Lincoln, and my favorite patriotic
film, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, met: the Lincoln Memorial.

There are a few choice films that every American should see as a reminder of the great freedoms God has bestowed upon our country. Rarely does a film urge us to give our all - sweat, toil, grit, and guts - to
defend such freedoms. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of them. The Frank Capra directed film made its debut in 1939 just prior to World War II and James Stewart's real life military service. Although it was
criticized by many politicians and newsmen of its day, it has gone down as one of America's most patriotic and stirring films.
The classic struggle of one man - betrayed, slandered, and prepared to quit - who yet stays to fight til the bitter end, is one that stirs mankind and transcends generations. During one of the most stirring
sequences of the film, Miss Saunders (Jean Arthur) challenges Smith to stay. She asks him, "Jeff, what did you do, quit? Didn't you do something about it? . . . You can't quit now, not you. . . . You didn't just have faith in Paine or any other living men - you had faith in something bigger than that." Such a desire to persevere in the face of great opposition has been engraved on our souls by the Almighty God of creation. And - it is only by the grace of God that anything can be accomplished through us.

The first time I watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, I was upset that the American political system had failed. If Senator Paine had not finally succumb, our system would not have protected us. However, I later realized Frank Capra's greater message in the film: the system will not work unless we have men who demonstrate moral values upholding it. This lesson is rarely taught in classrooms today - where all social problems are deemed solvable through the eyepiece of bureaucratic government. There is a great need to be reminded of the truth so eloquently stated by President John Adams: "We have no
government armed with power capable of contending with emotions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
This message is constantly reverberated throughout the film. During Smith's filibuster he tells his fellow Senators, "I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules, if behind them they didn't have a
little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - and a little looking out for the other fellow."

Another powerful message is represented by Jean Arthur. She is the one who encourages him fight that last bloody battle. There is something so beautiful about a woman who desires to stand behind her man, and the necessity of her encouragement to help him persevere. If more women realized their potential as exhorters of man, would there be more "Mr. Smiths"?

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!!.......2007-04-16

I first saw this movie during summer school of my government class just to get it out of the way for senior year and i am so happy i did because if i didnt i never would have found out about this movie. although it is in black and white and it's from "back in the day" it is such a powerful movie.

it tells alot about what might go on in the senate, and to have james stewart pull off such a typical nice guy who can rant like there is now tomorrow was just powerful. And to see him and jean arthur together again was just great.

if your lookin for a classic to bring you into classic movies this one would be it!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Lesson on How Government Works.......2007-04-04

A United States Senator has died and the Governor must appoint a replacement to get the approval of a dam in the state. [Water supplies, or power, are very important in western states.] Politicians have been buying up the lands near the proposed dam. ["Honest graft" said George Washington Plunkett.] The film shows the back-room deals of the political bosses. But the Governor's children clamor for Jefferson Smith (showing the effects of the media on impressionable minds). Candidate selection by luck? The Governor explains his logic: a young fresh face will impress the voters [and the machine will do the job of getting him elected]. Smith is a fast learner, he knows how to flatter the powerful Senator Paine. Smith's father was murdered by a mining corporation (but they couldn't prove it). Arriving in Washington he is greeted by lovely young women ("groupies", a hint of scandal). Smith visits the Federal monuments and buildings. Smith is so naive you know it is just an act. His pet idea is a "Boy's Camp" for city boys. The film shows how the media can play the news in its photographs of Senator Smith.

The Senate commences with a prayer for wisdom. [Have they ever prayed for honesty and common sense?] Smith punches out the newspaper men who offended him [but they were just doing their job, following orders]. These journalists tell Smith how they see things. Senator Price explains how the laws are made; even a lawyer can't understand them. Secretary Saunders explains how bills are made into laws. [This is a tutorial for the people who forgot their civics courses.] Smith's camp would be located by Willett Creek (where the dam would be built). Smith's speech is played for laughs, but the visitors cheer and clap for this well-meaning plan. Senator Paine's daughter Susan will divert Smith away from the Senate when the bill for the Willett Creek dam is introduced. [Could Smith be working for the interests of Big Coal who don't want competition from hydroelectric power?] A tipsy Clarissa Saunders explains how the trick was done. Could the Senate introduce a bill that benefits one rich man? [This film shows how political bosses control the politicians.]

Jim Taylor advises Senator Smith to do what is best for his state, where Taylor owns many businesses and newspapers. Senator Paine explains the need for "compromise", playing ball. The next day Senator Paine brings up the facts about Senator Smith: ownership of the Willett Creek lands! Expert witnesses testify as to the validity of Smith's signature. Shall government "of the people, by the people, for the people" perish from this earth? Clarissa Saunders returns to advise Jefferson Smith on how to fight his expulsion. Smith launches a filibuster to prevent this, and creates dramatic speeches. Senators protest by walking out, but a quorum call gets them back. Taylor orders the press to censor Smith's speech! [Can one wealthy individual still control the media in one state?] The other Senators agree to put down this upstart. One small weekly newspaper will print the truth, even when gangsters attack the newsboys. Will the people suffer from Taylor and his gang? Thousands of telegrams were sent against Smith; he collapsed from fatigue. But there is a surprise ending that ends happily.

Signing an option to buy land shows Smith is learning how government works. Building a dam would provide jobs and future hydroelectric power. It is a more sensible project than a reform school. This film swindles your emotions by presenting a one-sided and biased viewpoint.

--Tom Keogh

Description

Considered by many to be the greatest Hollywood movie ever made, this WW2 classic takes place in war-torn Casablanca and tells the tale of mysterious nightclub owner Bogart and his old Flame (Bergman), her husband, underground leader (Heinreid), and other skeletons from his past. Won 3 Oscars - Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay.

Director Ridley Scott, who created two of Hollywood's most impactful and stylish thrillers, Alien and Blade Runner, hits the mark again with Black Rain. Academy Award-winner Michael Douglas (Fatal Attraction, Wall Street) and Andy Garcia (Internal Affairs, The Untouchables) play New York cops, whose job to escort a vicious assassin back to his native Japan leads the two Americans into Osaka's exotic underworld and straight into the center of a raging, brutal "Yakuza" gangland battle.

4 out of 5 stars not bad at all.......2007-08-04

I won't go in to about the film, if you've already clicked on the link then you will know the jist of the film already. I have to admit I've been looking forwards to this release qutie a bit since it was first anounced, and I'm pleased to say it doesn't disapoint.

the picture quality for a pre-hd era film is quite simply amazing, you can seen right down to the scuff marks on the biker jacket at the begining, and I'm please to say that compaired to the standard DVD edition the dark areas finally appear clear like they did in the cinema complex all them years ago instead of the mush that was hastly rushed out on DVD in the first place.

The only complant picture wise I have is it kind of looks a little soft whether that is a process of re-scanning the film or how the director intented I don't know, all I know is this is the best qualtiy I've ever seen this picture in.

sound wise has come into a complete revelation. their are times in the film where you just wonder if the sound was comming from outside instead of being on the disk, if your player can handle it switch to DTS6.1 and see what I mean, maybe its taste prefrence but the EX soundtrack didn't have quite the same bite to it.

All in all I'm very happy with it 4* if you haven't seen the film and have Blu-ray get this belive me you won't be disapointed

Five years after Captain Blood made him a swashbuckling star, Errol Flynn returned to the high seas as privateer Captain Thorpe in The Sea Hawk. Flynn plays the dashing gentleman pirate as dedicated patriot, looting Spanish ships for English coffers with the private blessing of Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson, reprising the role from Fire over England). The film opens with a rousing sea battle: broadside cannon fire sends masts falling and splinters a-flying before Flynn's men take their Spanish quarry in a furious shipboard cutlass battle. The fearless fighter becomes a stumbling schoolboy when he falls for the Spanish ambassador's niece, but he's back in his element when he sails to the New World for treasure and lands in the middle of a deadly conspiracy. Big-eyed beauty Brenda Marshall stands in for Flynn's usual love interest Olivia de Havilland, and the film misses the latter's sass and spirit, but it's a minor shortcoming. Claude Rains plays his usual smoothly conniving villain, and hearty Alan Hale returns as Flynn's loyal sidekick. Michael Curtiz proves once again why he was Warner Brothers' top director with a handsome, action-packed film that mixes intrigue and suspense with grand set pieces, concluding with a rousing series of escapes, chases, and a runaway sword fight. Classic Hollywood swashbuckling at its best. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thorpe's not Blood.......2007-06-18

Korngold is still Korngold, but Brenda's not Olivia, and Daniell is definitely not Sir Basil. Although Flora is much better than Bette. All the old ingredients seem to be there, but somehow the cake isn't quite up to snuff. Curtiz seems a little exhausted, in spite of the standard trademark shadow-sword-swashing; perhaps it's just that Flynn can't quite take it seriously enough any more. Four swords against one is maybe a trifle over the top. Also, the film was over-budgeted, and the model ships still look like model ships. There are some interesting extras from the pundits on this disc, and Flora's message at the end comes across with some punch, but the reality of the Battle of Britain remains more vivid than any Hollywood hokum. Sorry, folks: I have to dock a star.

4 out of 5 stars Only missing ingredients: Technicolor and Olivia de Havilland..........2007-06-04

When Warner Bros. substituted BRENDA MARSHALL for Flynn's usual romantic interest they made a big mistake. Certainly she's pretty (in a remote sort of way with a facial expression carved in stone), but there's none of the usual back and forth wit and spirit that OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND always shared with Flynn. In other words, the spark of chemistry that made them such a memorable love team is completely missing here.

So is Technicolor. Hard to understand why the studio didn't back this investment (which cost a hefty sum at the time) with color photography which would have added so much richness to the story. As it is, the crisp B&W photography is handsome enough but with all those gorgeous sets and costumes, color is an ingredient that should have been seriously considered.

The story has its points of interest but exists mainly to showcase the athletic abilities of ERROL FLYNN and, presumably, most of the vigorous male cast. All with the exception of HENRY DANIELL who, although a fine screen villain, was not up to the requisite swordplay and had to be doubled for all the long shots. Basil Rathbone, where were you???

Capping the whole thing is a majestic score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold that is worthy of a far better film. But sea tales don't get much better than this and the studio backed their production with a wonderful ensemble cast that included WILLIAM LUNDIGAN, ALAN HALE, CLAUDE RAINS, FLORA ROBSON, JAMES STEPHENSON, UNA O'CONNOR and many, many more.

Summing up: It's a lusty tale of piracy on the high seas and lots of treachery afoot so that Errol Flynn can swing into action and save the day for God and Queen. Smooth sailing.

3 out of 5 stars A letdown for this Flynn fan. ----- Brenda Marshall!!???.......2007-04-29

As someone who greatly respects Errol Flynns work, I must say I was disappointed in this movie. A year before in 'Dawn Patrol' I thought Flynn gave a great performance as a hot shot fighter pilot, who when given Command must accept responsibility for the lives of his men.

Critics have said that Flynn's 'Sea Hawk' role is a mature performance, to me it's a dull turn by Flynn. He is not helped at all by a clunky script and a stunningly bad performance by Brenda Marshall. She brings NOTHING to her roll as the female romantic lead. A truly terrible performance by this young lady.

In Captain Blood (his American debut), Flynn has verve, enthusiasm, amazing charisma, he rightly became an overnight star with that performance. But, he looks somewhat bored in this film. It is an OK, 3 star film, but please don't mislead people and compare this movie to 'Robin Hood', or 'Captain Blood', or the terrific 'Charge of the Light Brigade'.

5 out of 5 stars Sea Hawks.......2007-03-16

I love the movie. It had plenty of sword fights & action in it .

5 out of 5 stars Sail to adventure with the Sea Hawk.......2007-02-21

Errol Flynn was in his home element as the captain of a privateer in the service of Queen Elizabeth. A true swashbuckler, this is alot of fun. The story is full of intrigue, action, humor and romance. The production values were high for this movie. Add to that a cast that included Brenda Marshall, Flora Robson and Claude Rains. Also look for some of the best character actors of the day, like Alan Hale, Donald Crisp and Una O'Connor to round out the movie. See sea battles and swordplay aplenty to make for a rousing good time. One note, this was made early during the second world war. The final scene with the queen was added as a morale booster for the audience in England.

Warner Brothers did this up right with this release as part of their Warner Night at the Movies. Dvd comes with Newsreel, Short, Cartoon and trailers. As included is a featurette about Flynn and this movie. You got to get this one!

2 out of 5 stars Not the best Universal classic horror.......2007-09-11

The Wolf Man, in my own personal opinion, is not as good as many of the other classic Universal horror films. It's not for lack of trying. The cast is exemplary, including horror greats Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi and Claude Rains. The story, music, ambiance and mood are all excellent. The problems lie in a few inconsistencies as well as the Wolf Man himself. First, yes, Jack Pierce's makeup is good for 1941, but the design of the Wolf Man is not. Lon Chaney, changed, looks more like a "werepoodle" than a werewolf. Or, if you rather, the werewolf looks much more like the "bear man" from Island of Dr. Moreau than anything even remotely resembling a wolf. Other problems with the film include the oddity that the police captain, looking at a footprint more than twice the size of a full-grown man's, concludes that it's a wolf print. A wolf that leaves a print that big would be the size of a horse, though no one notices anything odd about it. Another inconsistency lies in the fact that when the Gypsy, played by Lugosi, changes into the werewolf, he actually becomes a wolf and not an extra-furry man; however when Chaney changes into the werewolf he does not become a wolf but the aforementioned bear-werepoodle-man thing. Why didn't he just turn into a wolf too? The movie would have been much more effective (and creepier) had this been the case. Yet another (and this is the only other one I'll mention--I promise) was the horrendous decision to have Claude Rains play Lon Chaney's father! Rains looks YOUNGER than Chaney!! The flow of the film is also impeded by a far too abrupt conclusion. Also problematic is that the main character, played by Chaney, is pretty hard to sympathize with. He's portrayed as a smarmy twerp who immediately upon entering the castle he'll inherit sets his sights on breaking up a couple to be married!

1 out of 5 stars Multi-disc set a Disaster!.......2007-08-16

I received the first shipment of this set and both discs were loose and rattling around inside the case. Upon inspection, the play side of each disc was marred by scratches and abrasions. After informing customer service of this problem, I was sent a replacement set which had the same issues as the first set. I sent both sets back and requested a refund, not wanting to pay "retail" price for scratchy DVDs. Whomever packages these Universal multiple disc sets needs to be more careful in making sure the DVDs are secure inside their cases. I was quite disappointed by this poor quality.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Horror Movies.......2007-08-09

I am just a kid but still I was a fan of Universal Studios Monster movies ever since I was in Preschool. I went to a Hollywood video one day, and found Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstien and almost all the rest! Over the years, I found I had a liking for The Wolfman and the Creature of the Black Lagoon. Then on my 7th or 8th birthday, I unwrapped my on copy of the Wolfman Legacy Collection. The first thing I would like to say is that I liked Frankenstien meets The Wolfman and the interview with the director of Van Helsing. What I did not like was "The She-Wolf in London" because it was about a lady that thought she was a werewolf but really wasn't. Well, thats about it. If anyones interested, If I get any other Legacy Collection I will probaly write a review on that one. Anyways, Bon Voyage!!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Or as I like to call it: Larry Talbot's Hairy Mess.......2007-07-22

The Wolf Man is a horror classic and it gets the Legacy treatment by including three other horror oldies, one of which interestingly predates the Wolf Man.
I can see that I am not the only reviewer that recieved a scratched disc so perhaps this is a good place to recommend the buyer beware a bit for shipping of this product. I wasn't that concerned because in my case it was disc 2 that was scratched and the main feature, The Wolf Man was fine. (I can live without watching the mom from Lassie and Lost in Space in She-Wolf of London I guess).
These Legacy Collections include the sequels, but honestly most of the sequels to the classic monster movies aren't that great. The Wolf Man is the main attraction and it is a very good classic monster movie, inspiring many imitators (of which Cat People is very notable and a classic in its own right. It is not a Universal film and hence not in this package).
Now let me take a moment to explain my opinion on these old horror movies. The ones made in the thirties (the original Dracula and Frankenstein) are regarded as classics as well but I always found them a bit disappointing. They were made in that awkward phase when "talkies" were still being perfected and their audio and staging are pretty lame in my opinion. Plus you have people in 1930s fashions and 1930s character types in what ought to be victorian era gothic tales, not to mention hokey touches like rubber bats on strings and cobwebs everywhere. German expressionism mixed with the unmistakable 1930s atmosphere just didn't work for me.
The Wolf Man, happily, was made in 1941. And 40s cinema has a polish and skill that I admire compared to the 30s (no rubber bats on strings in The Wolf Man). Plus the Wolf Man doesn't even pretend to be based on a classic of gothic literature, so I'm okay with it. Such is my prejudice against Dracula and Frankenstein.
I like the way Lon Cheney Jr. starts out as a very confident man who is good mechanically and not very shy when it comes to hitting on the girl. As he has to contend with things beyond his understanding (or control) it makes him even more sympathetic to see him break down and appeal to his father (the always excellent Claude Rains) for help.
The music, acting, and staging are all very good.
I would have to say that next to Creature from the Black Lagoon, it is my favorite of the Universal Horror films I have seen so far.

5 out of 5 stars The original "The Wolf Man".......2007-06-25

George Waggner's hirsute chiller mounts a tragic tale of fate, obsession, and man's baser instincts--and features one of the most startling transformations ever concocted for film. The younger Chaney had avoided monster roles for years, but created his most memorable screen persona when he finally donned a snout and yak hair. With makeup genius Jack Pierce and a cast of top-notch talent on hand--including Bela Lugosi, Evelyn Ankers, and Ralph Bellamy--the Universal team created an iconic picture that has inspired countless re-visionings. But avoid the sequels: the original "Wolf Man" is the only version worth feasting on.

5 out of 5 stars A great film way ahead of it's time.......2007-06-13

The Invisible Man is way ahead of it's time. H. G. Wells was way ahead of his time. This film while not a perfect adaptation is still the best version that has been released. A great science fiction film with effects that still hold up.

5 out of 5 stars LAST BUT NOT LEAST................2007-02-22

The Invisible Man Legacy collection is a great buy. These films don't get the credit they deserve. At least the 3 Invisible man entries are well worth your time and money. Hey it's Universal,I love them all!

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-01-13

If you are a fan of the classic horror film then this is a must. The special effects are suburb for their day and the film quality is very good.
All of the Legacy Collection Sets are worth the cost and i have them all.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent movie, poor "extras".......2006-09-17

For those who enjoy classic monster movies, this series will delight and amaze you. The special effects, particularly in the original movie, were incredible for the time, and easily contribute to the staying power of The Invisible Man. Claude Rains performance, especially, is incredible and easily overshadows any other performance in the sequels.

For those like me, however, who were hoping for the extras to detail the processes that went into making the movies, be prepared for a possible disappointment. They seem to concentrate more on the life of James Whale and the fact that he was a homosexual (and how noble that made him) in Hollywood at the time then they do in speaking about the films and what went into making them. I dont really see what the man's sexual orientation had to do with it; had it been a biography of him, I could understand.

All in all, a good collection!

2 out of 5 stars two movies dont work for some unknown reason.......2006-09-07

All these movies are good classics, but the problem is that Universal Studios' dvd transfer is horrible. two of the movies in this boxset dont even work and freeze when ever you play them. and its not just with this item, but also with some other legacy boxsets (including the one from hammer that are owned by universaL STUDIOS. either universal doesnt know how to transfer old movies onto dvds, or im just seeing things.

Description

It's a quaint turn-of-the-century small town of shady streets, swimming holes and the Sunday afternoon clip-clop of horse and buggy. But that peaceful exterior conceals human lives twisted by cruelty, murder and madness. Kings Row is one of Warner Bros.' most distinguished productions, highlighted by an outstanding cast, haunting James Wong Howe cinematography and a somber, emotion-laden Erich Wolfgang Korngold score. Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, Betty Field, Claude Rains and Charles Coburn give indelible performances ? and Ronald Reagan's portrayal of Drake, a cheerful ne'er-do-well shattered by tragedy, has been hailed as his career best. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards? including Best Picture,* Kings Row is a powerful American saga of dreams, despair and triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Physicians and Integrity.......2007-08-25

Anyone who has ever dismissed Ronald Reagan as a "B-movie" actor has only to see him in "King's Row" to realize that he was perfectly capable of being an "A-movie" actor. In Reagan's case, I do not think that it was a question of mediocre talent but rather of having the right material and the kind of director who could command a superb performance. Sam Wood was one such director, and the 1942 film, based upon Henry Bellaman's novel of the same name, afforded the dramatic setting in which Reagan could shine.

Set in a small Missouri town in the early 1900's, "King's Row" explores many issues which have come to haunt modern times, specifically the power and authority of the medical profession over people's lives. It emphasizes that being a physician is a vocation in which the highest integrity is absolutely indispensable. Without a moral compass, the medical profession is doomed to barbarity.

In spite of the idyllic appearance of the town, it is haunted by a sadistic doctor who sees himself ordained to punish sinners, as long as the sinners in question are too poor and obscure to defend themselves. Ron
