Meryl Streep tried her hand at action films with this Curtis Hanson film and proved herself quite credible, bringing emotion as well as the willingness to kick butt. She plays a suburban mom and former white-water rafting guide who is taking her family on a raft trip for summer vacation. But overworked Dad (David Strathairn) can't make the trip, so she and her son leave without him--and walk right into trouble. Killers on the run (Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly) abduct them and force Streep to take them down the most dangerous stretch of river to elude the cops. Hanson understands how to pace and construct this kind of action fodder, but it's strictly formula stuff, enlivened only by the depth of Streep's portrayal and the viciousness of Bacon's character. --Marshall Fine

Have seen this movie many times - it only gets better. Suspenseful and engaging, it will keep you guessing, and it's good to see Kevin Bacon as a bad guy for a change. Well-acted by Meryl Streep and Kevin, this is great for a rainy Saturday!

I have to say that Saturday night when my wife and I decided to play couch potato I wasn't expecting to get anything out of the movie she decided to watch. To be completly honest the only reason I stayed in the room was that I heard John C. Reilly was in this movie. But I'm glad I stayed, not for Rielly but fort he movie for it in itself was a really decent film. The story revolves around one family, Gail (Streep) and her husband (I can't spell his last name but it's the guy from Good Night and Good Luck) and their son as they go on a white water rafting trip down river. Gail is an experianced rafter and because of that she is inadvertantly forced to guide two thieves (Bacon and Reilly) down river. Kevin Bacon is great at playing bad and Reilly is always wonderfull as the sidekick, whether good or bad. It's Bacon though that steals the show as the completly evil and unpredictable Wade. I was impressed at how much I enjoyed the film and there were quite a few thrills and edge of your seat moments. I'd recomand it for anyone wanting an adrenaline pumper that falls more in line with action drama than scary. And I was equally impressed that Streep did all her own stunts...now thats dedication.

Jo Van Fleet's Supreme Moment.......2007-07-25

Jo Van Fleet earns the academy award she got for East of Eden. Her every look, every intonation is stripped bare of sentiment. She subtly creates an identification between herself and the land, the river, and its history. When the great oak tree beside her old homestead comes crashing to earth the sound itself is wrenching to us -it is like the old woman herself being ripped in two.

Ms. Van Fleet in this film gives a master-class in acting. One of the great performances.

Montgomery Clift is a complex, hurt and fascinating character and the part is infused with his compelling and yet ambiguous sexuality. Lee Remick is transcendent, her loneliness, sexual hunger and intensity could have been off-putting - she shades it so exquisitely with her wise and maternal tenderness that it works. When SHE proposes to HIM shes says more or less "in some things you are stupid and I'm not and you need me" Her boldness is so appealing.

It is worth noting that the racial tensions of the period are part of the plot BUT the poor whites of Tennessee are treated with affectionate respect and not as Hollywood stereotypes.

Never saw a sweeter movie!.......2007-03-27

I agree fully with the reviewer from Bakersfield.

Internet Movie Database provided links to a source who could give me a NTSC copy for about $50. However, with compatible software and hardware you can see this PAL version in your computer monitor. This particular PAL version is technically (color and crispness of picture) much better than what I saw on television years ago.

This PAL region 2 version (just a few copies) is available in Amazon. I am sure more copies are available somewhere else.

If you copy the DVD to your computer hard drive (it is not copy-protected) you can play it with Nero Showtime and a compatible monitor, in my case, a Viewsonic VX922.

The picture in this version is crisp and the color is gorgeous!

A Forgotten Film.......2007-02-11

It is a shame this film has fallen into obscurity over the years. Though overshadowed by Elia Kazan's more heralded and flashier efforts, I have always found "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "Wild River" to be his best. Thanks to a scarred Montgomery Clift and a young and earthy Lee Remick, "Wild River" has a feeling of quiet reality.

Monty's genius was to be so much the person he was portraying that he seemed to disappear onscreen. Clift's sensitive performance here, coming after the accident which altered his appearance, is one of his best. It is matched by lovely Lee Remick.

Clift works for the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) and has come to Jo Van Fleet's rural home to move her off her land so room can be made for a dam. Clift is not uncaring and his sympathy for the older woman is complicated even further by his attraction to her young granddaughter, Lee Remick.

He is also unpopular because of his fair treatment of blacks whom he is employing to help build the dam. But the violence simmering just beneath the surface here is less on his mind than Remick. He cannot have her because of what he is forced to do. Yet it is torture for him.

Clift's sensitivity and Remick's heart, torn between what she knows he has to do and what she feels within for him creates a frustration for the would-be couple the viewer can really feel. One scene in particular, as Remick paces back and forth in front of a sitting Clift, reveals the ache in Clift which finally blows.

Beautiful location filming by Kazan adds a further sense of reality to this quiet yet moving film. This was one of Clift's best post-accident performances and it is sad it is only available in this region 2 format for those across the pond to enjoy. Perhaps soon it will be recognized for the quiet masterpiece it is and become available to all.

The stories here are good, most of the characters are well written and the acting is really great! Mary Sanchez, who plays Ann Marie in the first movie, Hana in the last two and La Llorona in all three is really the heart of this story and she holds it together well, veering between innocent, terrified victim to depressed and suicidal and then to possessed demon without losing her character at all! Terrence Williams has put together his own mythos here and he could really make La Llorona a female Freddy or Jason quite easily! Overall, La Llorona Gone Wild is a good trilogy, with each movie running just over an hour so they never over stay their welcome. Overall, I'm giving La Llorona Gone Wild three out of four cigars, because for a micro-budget movie the effects are quite good and the acting and story are great. - RogueCinema.com

In this episode of Wild West Tech you learn about how the gamblers tried to cheat other players and how the casinos tried to cheat their customers by using devices and tools that would give them the upper hand. You also find out what happens to you if you get caught cheating and you learn about some famous gamblers and some famous people who liked to gamble like Wild Bill. They go into detail about the inventions they used and how they worked.

This is a good show and I wish that they sold it in a set but hey what can you do? Anyways if you're a fan of the show or the wild west then you should get this.
