In some ways, Blood and Iron captures more of graphic novelist Mike Mignola's original vision than Guillermo del Toro's lackluster feature did in 2004. Hellboy, the demon brought into this world by the Nazis, but raised by "Professor Broom" to fight for good, was conceived as a drawing, not an actor buried under make-up and latex. The story, which incorporates elements from Mignola's "Wake the Devil" collection, sends Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Prof. Broom to the haunted mansion of a vulgar millionaire. Hoping to cash in on the supernatural angle, he's filled the house with relics of "Blood Countess" Erzsebet Ondrusko (based on the 16th century Hungarian noblewoman Elizebeth Bathory), whom Prof. Broom defeated in 1939. It's really haunted, and the gang tackles harpies, ghosts, witches, werewolves, vampires, and the goddess Hecate. The key actors from the live action film repeat their roles as voices: Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz), Doug Jones (Abe), and John Hurt (Broom). Perlman makes a suitably underplayed Hellboy, growling his annoyance at everything from a bad donut to a vicious blow from the iron-clad goddess. The limits of the animation would be less problematic if the direction were more dynamic. Tad Stones and Victor Cook don't get the needed power out of the action sequences, especially the prolonged battle between Hellboy and Hecate. It would be interesting to see what a talented director like Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Ruruoni Kenshin) or Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin-Roh) would do with this material. Blood and Iron will appeal to some "Hellboy" fans, but it lacks the dark panache of the original books. (Unrated, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, potentially offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon

Ok.......2007-07-25
I love Hellboy! I enjoy the comics and the major motion picture. The animated adventures are just ok to me. Not as fun as the movie, but they will do until the sequel comes out.
A CUT BELOW LIVE-ACTION HELLBOY.......2007-07-17
I'm a big fan of the movie Hellboy, which is the only reason that I watched the animated Blood And Iron. However, I'm not a fan of cartoons. So, naturally I wasn't blown away by this. Sure, it had some good humor, and the animation was topnotch. It's just that it had a kiddie feel to it that kept me from really getting into it.
Hell Boy: Blood and Iron.......2007-07-07
A Good flick; this toon is very true to the Hell Boy Comics and features voice acting by the cast from the Motion Picture. The animation isn't on the greatest budget and doesn't impress, but witty writing and good character design make up for this a good deal. I found "Storm of Swords" slightly more enjoyable, but if you're a fan- you won't regret this purchase.
If you liked the Movie, This, you will Love!.......2007-07-07
This is Great! I was really surprised by these animated films with all the actors from the film! its really good with excellent voice talent of abe sapian, and of course hellboy *ron perlman* and the animations are excellent and clean as a razor. sound quality is also excellent (played this with my dolby surround running and wow!) I Really enjoyed this one more then Sword of Storms, because of the gothic aspects *they are fighting a Vampire* and of course hellboy's patented "oh crap" line that seems to always be dropped in at the perfect moment! I cracked up several times watching this. If you are a fan of all things Hellboy the do your self a favor and go buy this. afterward rent sword of storms to make sure you want that one.
Animation: animatrix/Dark Fury style artwork always a plus with me 5 star
Graphical quality: again 5 star not a glitch in it.
Sound: Scary good!!!! 5 STAR!!!
extras: some and really not that interesting. 3 star
aside from dull extras this film is worth every cent and its over an hour long vs dark fury *chronicles of riddick* is only 35 minutes! its a very good deal I was really surprised!

Hellboy - Blood and Iron (Animated)
Old Enemies Menace Hellboy's Surrogate Father.......2007-07-01
HELLBOY: BLOOD AND IRON is the second Hellboy animated movie released direct-to-DVD. The first was HELLBOY: SWORD OF STORMS. As in the first feature, Ron Perlman provides the voice for Hellboy. Other stars from the feature film lend their voices as well, including Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Peri Gilpin, and John Hurt. The story is taken from the second story arc of the Hellboy comics. It was originally called, "Wake the Devil".
This movie shows more of Hellboy's upbringing than the feature movie starring Ron Perlman. It also reveals a lot more of Professor (Bruttenholm) Broom's background before he found Hellboy back in the 1940s after the Nazi Germans brought him into this world. As it turns out, Professor Broom was quite the paranormal investigator long before Hellboy arrived.
During those days, the professor's arch-nemesis was Erzsebet Ondrusko, a vampire and worshiper of Hecate, the queen of witches. The opening sequence showing Broom's encounter with the villainess is appropriately chilling and a visual treat. In fact, the whole movie owes more to creator Mike Mignola's artwork than the feature-length movie. The scenes in the animated movie could have been ripped directly from Mignola's comics pages.
Hellboy is introduced while lurking through a sewer system and looking for a monster. He, admittedly, is up to his neck in crap. The humor mixes very well with the action and emotion in the film. This isn't Leo Tolstoy, but it's nice to have characters you feel like you know and can care about. Especially when they're dealing with old business that carries a lot of emotional baggage for them.
Hellboy puts down the creature with help from Abe Sapien and they quickly return to the hidden headquarters of the BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). They sit around talking and the viewer gets to know more about the characters. One of the things I enjoy about the movies is that you don't have to know much to understand who the characters are. You're given what you need to know as you go along, and it's never dull even for the true fans that already know everything.
When assignments are given out, Professor Broom usurps control of the meeting and assigns Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman to investigate sightings of ghosts in a mansion that's been remodeled into a top-of-the-line museum/lodge. The job was initially a low-priority for them. The professor offers no explanation and the rest of the team is left wondering what's going on. More than that, the professor is going along and that hasn't happened in years. All of them are concerned for his health.
Of course, when they arrive at the mansion, things are decidedly much worse than they were led to believe. There's not just one ghost; there appear to be dozens. And even more evil is afoot.
Interspersed for the current ongoing story line, there are flashbacks to Professor Broom's earlier encounters with Erzsebet Ondrusko. The story concerning Hellboy and the others definitely takes second-place to the overall storytelling until the very last of the movie. It's all the clues and backstory of what has gone on before that really captures the interest.
The fight scene at the end of the movie is multi-layered as Hellboy and the others are divided. It's all interesting to watch, but it tends to drag on the little, especially when you realize that time after time it is not over.
Due to the violence and the scary appearances of many of the monsters, this animated feature is and recommended for young kids. However, if you like cartoons and your kids do too, this is definitely one you can sit down and enjoy together. There's enough story and enough action to keep everyone happy. At 75 minutes, you can easily fit the movie into an evening.

4 Stars for the Movie 1 for the DVD Version.......2007-02-19
This is one of those little pictures you never expected to like, and yet 17 years after first seeing it, it is still a favorite of mine. A low budget affair, it really gets a lot for it's money. The story is fairly simple, a team of juggers go from town to town playing other teams to then possibly challenge one of the great league teams that play in one of the nine cities that remain in this post apocolyptic world. The game is straight forward. You must get your runner with a dog skull through the enemy lines to place it on a stake. It is very brutal however, with lots of action and blood. The stories two main characters are a disgraced former league player who leads his team to challenge again. Also, the girl runner or quick who wants more from her life that her squalid village can offer. This is a great underdog movie, and you will find yourself caught up in the action. The problem with the movie however is the dvd. It is presented only in full screen. It shows only one version of the movie. There is a slightly longer cut with a differant ending out there. Also the picture quality is very muddy. In the daylight scenes it will get by, but when they go underground, it is very hard to see anything. This is one film that needs a special edition. Sadly, though it is a cult classic, I don't know if it gets enough buys to warrant the studio to take the time and money to clean the print, and add some decent extras.
Heroic.......2006-12-22
I have watched this movie so many times I can not count. The movie starts with a young boy yelling "the juggers are comming" and very quickly you are introduced to a game that is brutal, harsh yet the players are respectful to each other in a way that you would not see today in football, soccer or basketball. Rutger Hauer and joan chen are the primary stars.(I wonder if this was her first movie). All of the actors play their role well.
It would have been nice if there was an explaination of what happend to the world to drive major cities underground and left the rest of the world to barely surive.
When I went to buy the movie, I was lucky to get a copy of the VHS version, it is much better than the DVD version. If you liked Rollerball, the originial, you will certainly like this movie. I would suggest that to enjoy this move to the fullest, that you suspend your questions about how the world ended up here and how in the fracking way the game began.
There is one scene where a women touches the blood on Vincent D'Orio which symbolizes the name of the movie. The players of this game have the aura of heroes which is how the population views them. Enjoy!!!
Addictive movie.......2006-06-29
This is my favorite Rutger Hauer movie; ok maybe excepting Blade Runner. Low budget and low tech didn't hurt the story telling. It's violent but for the most part for a reason; not just to show blood. The movie is just plain fun to watch.
Love the movie but dissappointed with presentation.......2006-03-22
This is one of my favorite movies. Not sure why. Honestly.
First off this movie is essentially a sports movie wrapped into a post-apocalyptic setting.
This movie is full of character actors we all know as well. Rutger is his usual awesome self in this well written, well acted, low-budged faire. The script and pacing is tight and the final playing of "The Game" plays better than many other sport movies.
Now for my main complaint. This movie is in 4:3! No widescreen presentation? This movie has played on Bravo plenty of times in Widescreen. It had a theatrical release this was no direct to video movie.
On the off-chance this movie is ever remastered and released in its original aspect ratio I will be the first to buy it!
Too bad its the american version.......2006-03-15
I was very disappointed to find out that this was the American version, it lacks 10 minutes of footage, and has sort of a happy ending for Sallow.
Apart from that this is still a very solid post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie.
Description
The John Wayne Legendary Heroes Collection features five classic films from the larger-than-life American hero, including Blood Alley, McQ, The Sea Chase, Tall in the Saddle and The Train Robbers, all available on DVD for the first time.
Born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, John Wayne first worked in the film business as a laborer on the Fox lot during summer vacations from U.S.C., which he attended on a football scholarship. He met and was befriended by John Ford, a young director who was beginning to make a name for himself in action films, comedies and dramas. It was Ford who recommended Wayne to director Raoul Walsh for the male lead in the 1930 epic Western The Big Trail, and, although it was a box office failure, the movie showed Wayne's potential. For the next nine years, Wayne worked in a multitude of B-Westerns and serials in between bit parts in larger features. Wayne's big break came in 1939, when Ford cast him as the Ringo Kid in the adventure Stagecoach. Wayne nearly stole the picture from his more seasoned co-stars, and his career as a box-office superstar began. During his 50 year film career, Wayne played the lead in 142 movies, an as yet unsurpassed record, and was nominated for three Academy Awards., winning the Best Actor award in 1970 for his performance in True Grit. Blood Alley (1955) - An American seafarer patrolling the South Seas is asked by the daughter of a missionary doctor killed by the Communists to help transport the citizens of a small Chinese town to freedom in Hong Kong. This action-adventure based on A. S. Fleischman's novel, marks the first on-screen pairing of movie legends John Wayne and Lauren Bacall. DVD special features include: Newsreel footage (The Hollywood Foreign Press Honors John Wayne, Crusade for Freedom, John Wayne and The Legion Poppy Sale (silent clip), Air Force Honors the Cast of Blood Alley), 1955 Promos on Blood Alley (Wayne discusses how he made it into the movies; "the monster" of movie land; the Mitchell BNC camera and his use of his home movie camera to capture scenes while on Blood Alley), John Wayne trailer gallery
McQ (1974) - John Wayne forcefully enforces the law in this high-velocity thriller that's a revenge western set in the big city. Police Lieutenant Lon McQ (Wayne) investigates the killing of his best friend and uncovers corrupt elements of the police department dealing in confiscated drugs. Directed by John Sturges (Ice Station Zebra, The Magnificent Seven), McQ also stars Eddie Albert (Roman Holiday) and Colleen Dewhurst (Annie Hall, Dying Young).
The Sea Chase (1955) -John Wayne and Lana Turner are a formidable romantic team in this harrowing adventure directed by Academy Award-nominee John Farrow (Wake Island). Sea captain Kal Erhlich (Wayne) is an anti-Nazi German freighter captain at the outset of World War II attempting to sail his ship from Australia to the North Sea rather than risk internment. Both Allied and German ships follow in pursuit, while Erhlich battles storms, sharks, and romances.
Tall in the Saddle (1944) - In this fast-paced entertaining western, John Wayne stars as Rocklin, a cowboy who upon arriving at a ranch to work as a cowhand finds his employer was just murdered. Although he has no friends, and no money, Rocklin stays in town, intent on tracking the killers and uncovering a plan to inherit the dead employer's riches.
The Train Robbers (1973) - The action never stops in this western starring John Wayne, Ann-Margret and Ricardo Montalban. A gunhand named Lane (Wayne) is hired by a widow, Mrs. Lowe (Ann-Margret), to find gold stolen by her husband so that she may return it and start fresh. However, once they cross the border into Mexico to recover the loot, they discover two very different pursuers: a large group of bandidos and a lone horseman (Montalban), both of whom know their every move. DVD special features include: Two featurettes (Working with a Western Legend - an inside look at Wayne with stuntmen Jerry Gatlin, Dean Smith and Terry Leonard; The Wayne Train), John Wayne trailer gallery

McQ.......2005-08-18
Excuse me but I don't speak english and I buy yours DVD only , when are subtitles in french. For this reason,I talk about McQ in french. C'est un excellent film policier réalisé par un director de talent, John Sturges dont j'apprécie toujours les films (The Magnificent Seven, Bad Day at Black Rock, Backlash, Gunfight at the OK Corral etc.)
John Wayne Legnndary Collection.......2005-07-20
What can you say about movies with the Duke?
I love the Duke's movies.
I now have more than 75 Titeles in my DVD collection, Plus some colerized copies taken from TCM And AMC. I have edited the commercials out and burned them to DVD. I also have many of these on VHS tape.
It's good, but not great. .......2005-06-30
John Wayne, a legendary hero. This box set has some good movies, I really liked the Westerns, but the rest of the movies I didn't care for. Unless you're really into John Wayne this might be one Box Set you may want to rent rather than buy.
TALL IN THE SADDLE Stands Out.......2005-06-01
After "Stagecoach", it seems Duke finally started getting some decent scripts. "Tall in the Saddle" was written by his friend, Paul Fix who appeared in a lot of Westerns but is probably best remembered for TV's "The Rifleman" in the 50s and early 60s. "Tall in the Saddle" is a stand-out movie for the 1940s or for today. There is a real plot and lots of atmosphere with an eye-catching performance by Ella Raines. The other movies are only for John Wayne fans who will watch anything he is in. Of the others, I saw them all (except "The Sea Chase") when they were first released; I was always underwhelmed and remain so these years later. "Tall in the Saddle" is often on cable and can be taped; if you can manage to do that, you can save buying these other mediocre films.
Problems with Blood Alley.......2005-05-23
This is a great set. However, I've gone through four sets which were purchased/returned at Sam's Club!! Blood Alley is defective as it keeps on freezing or skipping. I've tried all four on three different machines. Has anybody had this problem? If the set from Amazon is alright, I'll buy it here.
Thanks!

Product Description
This is an adaptation of one of Jing Yong's lesser known novels. Do you wish to see Chung Jing Yee and Mou Shun Kwan in their younger days? This is also a rare chance to see Kiu Wai and Yat Wah working on the same drama. It is not easy to catch the 5 tigers on television or movies now. Although both don't have any scene together, it is still better than nothing for die-hard 5 tiger fans.
Hau Sit Yee killed many members of the Wan family. The five elders of the Wan family worked out a plan to deal with him. Upon discovering that their wives had been sold to the whore parlor, the Wan elders decided to kill them. Sit Yee captured Wan Yee. She was bitten by a snake. He pondered how his family was killed mercilessly by the Wan family.
After reflecting for a moment he decided to save Wan Yee. Wan Yee thought he was a ruthless killer. He informed Wan Yee that his entire family was killed by the Wan elders. He would not hold her against her will and that she was free to leave. In the morning Wan Yee set off but saw him practicing his skills. She fell in the river and was saved by him. After being rescued a second time, both fell in love.
Sit Yee informed Wan Yee that he would use her as bait to lure the Wan family members to his hideout. Wan Yee's father came to rescue Wan Yee. Sit Yee easily defeated him but Wan Yee begged for her father's life. Sit Yee was unable to bring himself to kill. Wan Yee's father seriously injured him. Sit Yee escaped and Wan Yee longed to see him once more.
