4 out of 5 stars Good set.......2007-08-13

I recently bought this set (I'm assuming it's the "corrected version")and my only complaint was that the discs were out of order. Other than that, everything worked just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Just ... WOW!.......2007-07-29

Is there a number higher than five on this review? Seriously, what's not to love here?! This set (corrected edition) has everything for the Superman enthusiast! All five movies, including all of their special features and added material; the never before seen Richard Donner Cut of Superman II; documentarys; behind the scenes looks and much, much more! This is an AMAZING set! The only bad thing about it is that it will be outdated when the new movies come out (beginning in 2009), and WB is likely to re-release a similar "ultimate" set. And Dammit, I'll buy each and every one of them like the sheep that I am!

4 out of 5 stars Close, but not "Ultimate," .......2007-07-17

Like some of the other reviewers, I purchased a defective disc as well, but with a little bit of patience and waiting, WB was kind enough to replace the damaged pieces.

Credit has to be given for what all this set contains: The four Christopher Reeve films, the Richard Donner Superman II, all the fourties animated cartoons, the Superman Fifitieth Anniversary special, the Bryan Singer documentary, Superman Returns, various interviews and clips.

The deleted scenes were fun. In particular the ones with Gene Hackman from Superman II and IV. His presence really adds to whatever film he's in.

One underrated moment in Superman IV is outstanding moment between Christopher Reeve and Muriel Hemmingway. Yeah! Clark Kent finally gets the girl on his own.

The one omission in my opinion is from Superman 1, and was shown when the movie first premiered on ABC in the early eighties. Then, the network added about fourty to fifty minutes to make the telecast a two night event. We see some of these added moments as extras, but still one missing segment was the final fate of the Kryptonian enforcer who was sent to arrest Jor-El as the planet was beginning to explode. While it was nice to see that ever so quick moment, we don't get the extra where the enforcer is killed on the way to take Jor-El, as a piece of exploding something crashes unto him, and we see his eyes open up briefly in fear.

The scene is only two seconds long, but I wish it had been included in this set. I was hoping it would be included when Donner releases his first Superman 1 deluxe edition on DVD years ago---well, it was not to be.

One does gain an idea where the Superman franchise went wrong in Superman IV. In particular..when observing the actor who was the first Nuclear Man. What were they thinking?

Still. A beautiful package, and maybe WB should release this set again for Christmas 2007 for those who missed it the first time.

Sincerely,

JThree

3 out of 5 stars Good, but wish it was better.......2007-08-25

So Superman #1 Awesome.
#2 - Good
#3 - Did they seriously make this movie?
#4 - Wow...I feel bad for Christopher Reeves.

The first two movies are really good transfers with good sound and features, however the last two were missing everything including 5.1 Surround Sound and extras. Although it doesn't really matter because they are so bad. Richard Pryor ruins the third movie. He turned it into a really bad...and stupid comedy. And the last movie doesn't make any sense. Although I like the message (I assume it was the only reason Reeves did it...oh maybe it was because he helped write the screenplay)

The only reason to get this set is if you are a collector. Otherwise save yourself the torture and but buy the first two movies in higher quality. Actually you are better off buying Smallvile. Yea, I said it.

3 out of 5 stars There's still a problem even with replacement disc.......2007-04-23

As many already know Warner set up an exchange program for the first disc in this box set. It seems the origianl theatrical 2.0 (Dolby Surround) mix was not correct but instead a 2.0 verison of the new 5.1. There are many differences between this one and the original 2.0 theatrical one released to theatres upon release. Warner's exchange program was meant to replace those discs with new and corrected ones. After waiting nearly 3 months I was forced to call WB and question where mine was. It was then sent to me overnight. But when it arrived I found the 2.0 mix (simply labled ENGLISH) is defective. In Dolby Surround 2.0 all dialog is meant to be in the center channel. Insead this release has it coming from all speakers, and if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 set-up it get really annoying with an echo. If you need to test your disc go to a scene where there is more dialog and no music and a low amount of sound effects like when Lois interviews Superman. Then compare the way is sounds with SUPERMAN III and SUPERMAN IV, which are both 2.0 Dolby Surround. You will see what I mean. It's a shame that WB has let this sloppy mistake happen - it should be fixed. Since this is a replacement disc I would imagine its the same version in the re-release of the Silver Box Set as well - even in the SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE sold on its own. I've been reviewing film professionally and have been a consultant for home video for 20 years and haven't seen a mistake like this in a long time. I tried to connact Warners several times but no one has returned my calls in the past month. Even the Home theater fourm deleted my postings on this. Having interviewed the film's producer several times I know this soundtrack shouldn't be like this. This film is considered a classic and should have been given better treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Reeve Superman Collection.......2007-04-11

Great movies, perfect for a rainy weekend. Brings back great memories of a more relaxed time and a wonderful man.

3 out of 5 stars Great movies...POOR presentation.......2007-02-19

Where do i begin? If you don't really want to own the new Superman movie, but just want all the classic Christopher Reeve films, you would think this is the best way to do it, right? I mean, it is called the CHRISTOPHER REEVE COLLECTION, isn't it? Yeah, well, you'd be wrong. Why? Read on...

There is a lot of extra content on this box set that is NOT from the Christopher Reeve movies: 17 old cartoons, the 1951 movie with George Reeves, a featurette on the Fleisher Superman....all completely unnecessary. Now, i'm not dissing this content for being present.... i'm dissing this content because this NON-CHRISTOPHER REEVE material is included AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER GENUINE CHRISTOPHER REEVE CONTENT!

Let's see what is NOT included in this collection:
1) Superman II: Richard Donner cut
2) Superman II: Restoring The Vision featurette
3) Superman II: Richard Donner's commentary
4) You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman (includes many details on the production of all 4 Reeve classics)
5) Look, Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story Of Superman

All of the above material contains extensive Christopher Reeve content. Unfortunately, in the "Christopher Reeve Collection," you get plenty of non-Reeve content to take up all the space of what could have been included. I mean, c'mon...17 Superman cartoons? That much material could have been an entire separate DVD release! The George Reeves movie could have been released as a bonus with the old TV show DVD sets.

Well, there is some good news: You CAN get all the above material on the ULTIMATE Superman Collection. Unfortunately, the packaging is flawed. The outer tin often arrives damaged, the inner disc holders break easily, and again, you pay for a lot of things you may not want...such as Superman Returns (which doesn't contain the bonus content you can only get on the Circuit City version). Oh yeah, and not to mention, two of the discs in the Ultimate Edition are wrong, and have to be replaced, AND it's almost impossible to find new, because it's out-of-print! Even if Warner fixes their disc problems with this set, and re-prints it, i'm sure the layout will still be just as poor.

The individual releases of Superman: The Movie & Superman II are the same way. Bonus un-related content, at the expense of much more Christopher Reeve content.

I find this totally ridiculous that they released these movies this way. I guess if you really want them though, THIS SET is certainly the way to go. This set is the same as you would buy them individually, in the same format/cases/layout only at a cheaper price. Then pick up the Richard Donner cut of Superman II separately. I'm going to see if i can download the missing Cinematic Saga of Superman content.

5 out of 5 stars Best Superman collection there is........2007-08-12

i was really hoping and waiting for a superman collection like this to become real...and here it is. the first and second movies (even the donner cut) are the best of the bunch. everything else is just what it was...if you liked it then - great; if not - that's fine too.

4 out of 5 stars superman collectors.......2007-07-09

The movies I'm certain are fine. I ordered the collectors edition because of the aluminum case and it was damaged in shipping which defeats the purpose of having ordered the collector's edition. It was a gift and the gracious receiver did not mention that it was banged up but I know there was disappointment. Might I suggest more bubble wrap in your shipping dept.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Fix for a Superman Junkie!.......2007-06-07

Dear God, this is the set I've been waiting for all my life. I have been in love with the Superman mythos since the first movie way back in 1978. A large part of my love with the character is the complexity given by Christopher Reeve's performance which Brandon Routh aptly carried on. Above all, this set allowed me to finally see the legendary cut scenes from Superman IV (And no, they not only do not improve the movie as urban legend claims but make it worse) as well as Richard Donner's version of Superman II (making me wonder if he'd had the time to do some final reshoots and add that finishing touch what it really could have been). I fell in love with Superman all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutley a must have.......2007-06-04

All I can say is if you are a fan of Superman and in particular the movies this is the set to have. It has everything!

And the Special editions and Donner Cuts are fantastic.

The law of diminishing returns: It's the law--obey it! Someone should have posted that sign on the set of this, the third sequel to the film based on the DC Comics superhero. The "IV" in the title refers to medical supplies needed to resuscitate this anemic retread. This one reportedly was a pet project of actor Christopher Reeve, whose career seemed to flounder whenever he tried a role minus the blue underwear and red cape. Before agreeing to don the suit one more time, he insisted on a script that preached nuclear disarmament. So, in this film, Superman rounds up all the missiles and warheads and flings them into outer space. Which still leaves him to contend with Lex Luthor, who has a secret weapon: Nuclear Man. Yawn. Having pushed the envelope of special effects in the first film, it seemed as if the filmmakers simply stopped trying with this one. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Worst Sequel But Still Enjoyable.......2007-09-11

With cheesy dialogue, illogical scenes, annoying characters, and story plot holes-it is easy to see why this movie is considered to be the worst of all the movies. With that said; I still liked the idea of the movie and thought that Nuclear Man was a cool character. Now, more than ever, we would like Superman to be real to end Earth's problems.

This movie is just full of flaws. Many times in the film, you can see the strings attached to Reeve making him fly. Other scenes you can tell are made on a set, such as the black curtains used to look like outer space on the moon. There are also scenes that don't make sense, Lois actually flies by herself and normal humans brought into space with no suit are able to breathe! Another thing wrong with the movie is the fact the story doesn't flow smoothly. Things happen without explanation. Lenny Luthor, Lex's nephew, is more annoying than Otis!! He is nothing more than an idiot stereotyped teen from the 80s that adds nothing to the story.

So there are a lot of reasons to not like the movie, but I can't help it, I like the movie. Like I said, Nuclear Man just made the movie for me. The entire film was very comic book like and reminded me of a story I could easily read in the comics. No, this film is no where near as good as the others, but once again- I like it.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERMAN IV.......2007-07-15

Good Movie , But Not As Good As 1 And 2 , Still Christopher Reeve Became Superman To A Whole New Generation Of Kids , And The Man Was A Fine And Very Talented Actor , God Rest His Soul , He Made A Whole New Generation , " LOOK!, UP THERE IN THE SKY !! IT's SUPERMAN!!!.....

3 out of 5 stars Poor film, Lots of deleted scenes!.......2007-06-06

Even though this is the silliest superman sequel, for a true and loyal superman fan this dvd is a must-have. Of all the recently released superman deluxe editions this one has the most deleted scenes of all. You get to see half an hour of scenes never seen before, some of which are pretty good. I like the extended flying scene and a typical Clark Kent's morning. The alternate version of Nuclear Guy looks very ugly and dumb. Thank God Mark Pillow ended playing it in the final cut. There are more fight scenes that were deleted and overall the studios really packed a good deluxe edition.

2 out of 5 stars The Quest for CHEESE.......2007-04-23

I recently bought the Superman DVD box set. I can't remember ever watching this sequel.. and WOW is this BAD! The story would make a mediocre comic book, which this movie reminded me of.. Nuclear Man? I can say the idea is cool.. But the way in which this character is created is way absurd. Nuclear dude and Stupidman have a most ridiculous fight on the moon which is half bar room saloon stuff to half the 3 Stooges (Nuke dude hammers Superman into the moon like a golf tee)

When Nukeman kidnaps the girl Hemingway and flies her into space was way beyond STUPIDO! Superman fights Nucleardude and gets Hemingway and flies her back to Earth and comes back to fight Nukenerd more without any explanation how Hemingway didn't explode on re-entry or how she was breathing in space.

Most interesting about this DVD is the deleted scenes. These incredibly are some of the best extras on any DVD I seen. They show a complete sub-story of whom I assume is Bizarro. When Lex steals Superman's hair, I thought he would make a crude clone of Superman i.e. Bizarro. But no we get a badly conceived Nuclear Man. The deleted clips show a completely deleted idea of the creation of Bizarro. The actor of Bizarro is over-doing it and played out as a comic interlude. Even if he were not deleted he is killed off quickly as plot device to get to Nuclear Man. Unfortunate they made so many mistakes with Bizarro since the entire movie should have been about him, preferably played out a tad more seriously. The complications of Superman dealing with his evil clone, make for a better movie than the cheesy save the world from nuclear war story.

The special effects are SO BAD, I can see the ropes when Superman flies, and cutouts of the moon look like bad Photoshop. The parts when Superman and Lois fly all over the world- might be the cheesiest scenes in movie history.

2 out of 5 stars Boggles the mind.......2007-02-05

1987's "Superman IV" made an attempt to return to the tradition of the first two Superman films, and steered away from the awful "Superman III," which was the most disappointing sequel in the history of film. But while it suceeded there, somewhat, it was actually more ludicrous than III in other ways. At least III didn't have Earth humans breathing on their own in space. Since this movie wasn't supposed to be a spoof, why would they just sit back and let this film be released with humans breathing in space? What were they thinking when they filmed that scene? Let alone when they allowed it to be released that way. You even see filmmakers today doing similiar things with today's movies. This is the most mind-boggling thing.

Description

Christopher Reeve not only dons the title hero's cape for the fourth time but also helped develop the movie's provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. "For me, it's the most personal of the entire series," Reeve said. "It directly reflects what Superman should be, and should be doing." Superman does a lot this time around. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two foes clash in an explosive extravaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty, plug a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna and rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China. Your quest for excitement is over!
