5 out of 5 stars beautiful movie in HD.......2007-03-25

warner made another beautiful HD transfer. I can't find another wrong, no grain anywhere. Just a perfect crystal clear image from start to finish. The cinematography will blow you away. Would give this 6 stars if i could. So far I find warner is the only studio willing to give HD addicts the best video quality possible. Some studios just throw a title on blu-ray and expect us to say, thank you for releasing it.

5 out of 5 stars True HD.......2007-02-15

Frankly i purchased this item just to know how a BD differ from a DVD on my HDTV using my newly purchased PS3. i chose this product cause it has a lot of natural & colorful scenes. the result was really amazing, visualy, blu-ray movies really surpasses DVD. i couldnt test the audio difference, cuz i only have 5.1 Sony decoder. the movie per say is a must see for all those who like action titles.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality, under-rated movie.......2007-02-02

Although not a box-office hit and factually inaccurate, I love this movie and would definitely put it in my top 10 favorites of all time. My wife just bought me a PS3 and I had to pick up a blu-ray disk to see the difference for myself. With SO MANY terrible, terrible movies available on blu-ray (Flyboys, Stealth, and Reign of Fire - the movie i consider to be one of the worst of all time - just to name a few), I decided to pick this up even though I already owned it on DVD. I had seen the movie in HD on DirecTV before, so there were no surprises regarding quality, but I was still really impressed when switching between this and the 480p picture produced by my DVD player. The colors are much more vibrant, the clarity is remarkable and it serves to submerse you in a movie that was already great as it was. As a huge fan of the movie as well as of HD picture quality, I was happy to pick this up at Best Buy for $25, but I probably wouldn't recommend getting this if you have it on DVD already unless you're a big fan. Now, if they could just get the Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-Ray...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing picture quailty.......2007-02-01

Well we already know about the movie so i am not going to comment on it. The most noticable thing about this Blu Ray release is the picture quality, its sharp, vivid colors, simply amazing. :) If you are looking for something to run as a demo on your new HDTV, this is the one. :)

I played it on my PS3 in 720p, its just great.

4 out of 5 stars Surprise, surprise.......2007-01-24

Whoa! This is a surprisingly good movie! Though based on a mishmash of actual events, the mishmash presented here works well. No, an American soldier was not sent to Japan to train the emperor's soldiers so that they could better fight the remaining samurai loyal to the dying Tokugawa regime. The man that Cruise's character is based on actually went to China, not Japan, or so I'm told (read The Devil Soldier by Caleb Carr). However, when the emperor took over Japan, after 264 years of the Tokugawa, shogunate-controlled Japan, there really were samurai that refused to abandon their way of life and philosophy. The samurai were not only warriors, but owners of a rich and complex philosophy and way of life that has been shunned by many modern Japanese (and picked up by Japanese mafia to some extent!) Many refer to the shogunate control of Japan as short-lived, which is interesting considering that the Tokugawa government lasted longer that America has so far! The Last Samurai is a surprisingly rich film, containing accurate portrayals of sword technique, mixed with hand-to-hand jiu jitsu, which is a martial art that real samurai practiced. The show is almost stolen by Hiroyuki Sanada, a Japanese actor who was one of Sonny Chiba's protégés. He was the star of Twilight Samurai, which is simply one of the greatest samurai films of all time. Sanada and Cruise have a slight rivalry going on, and the scene in which they confront each other with wooden swords (kendo swords) is one of the high points of the entire film. Watch and enjoy this heart-breaking film about a dying way of life. If you like it, then also check out When the Last Sword is Drawn, which is a Japanese film about the same events, made the very same year as The Last Samurai!

While Japan undergoes tumultuous transition to a more Westernized society in 1876-77, The Last Samurai gives epic sweep to an intimate story of cultures at a crossroads. In America, tormented Civil War veteran Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is coerced by a mercenary officer (Tony Goldwyn) to train the Japanese Emperor's troops in the use of modern weaponry. Opposing this "progress" is a rebellion of samurai warriors, holding fast to their traditions of honor despite strategic disadvantage. As a captive of the samurai leader (Ken Watanabe), Algren learns, appreciates, and adopts the samurai code, switching sides for a climactic battle that will put everyone's honor to the ultimate test. All of which makes director Edward Zwick's noble epic eminently worthwhile, even if its Hollywood trappings (including an all-too-conventional ending) prevent it from being the masterpiece that Zwick and screenwriter John Logan clearly wanted it to be. Instead, The Last Samurai is an elegant mainstream adventure, impressive in all aspects of its production. It may not engage the emotions as effectively as Logan's script for Gladiator, but like Cruise's character, it finds its own quality of honor. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-09-01

I am not a Tom Cruise fan. In fact I think he is a bit of a nut. But...after saying that this is a good performance for him. While the plot is fairly predictable I think it is an interesting look into a historical time period. A transition from an ancient tradition in Japan into the modern age. I would recommend the film to anyone who loves history.

5 out of 5 stars My bro loves it.......2007-07-28

My brother thinks of this as one of the best movies ever. I thought it was pretty good, but I sent it to him for a what the heck gift, and it was worth it to make him happy.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Movie.......2007-06-27

Something you'll want to watch a few times. Story of a civil war hero, fighting his own demons,(Tom Cruise) recruited to train the Emperors Army. He is forced to confront those demons and...A lot of similarites to "THE KING AND I". I primarily enjoyed the evolution of the main character brought on by...Lots of action. Lots of personal interaction of a philisophical nature. A somewhat "deep" movie. Hope I didn't spoil it for you!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2007-06-05

I don't care what the negative reviewers think, it's just a story, make-believe! Fiction doesn't have to be absolutely perfect, nor absolutely accurate either. You'd be hard-pressed to find any fictional films/stories that are.

And if a few liberties were taken with the historical element well, that's nothing new where Hollywood is concerned is it, and the film isn't meant to be historical in that sense anyway, just uses that period as a backdrop really. Poetic licence.

A number of people have likened it to 'Dances with Wolves'. Sorry but no. 'Dances with Wolves' bored me to tears. But 'The Last Samurai' is a lovely film, very emotive and with a nice soundtrack, and some great perfomances from all concerned. The themes were ones we could all do with being reminded of.

The only things about it that I didn't like were:

1. It didn't go on for as long as I would have liked it to.

2. The battle at the end seemed just a touch not right.

I've lost count how many times I have watched this film.

5 out of 5 stars My thoughts of why this movie was not popular in the US.......2007-05-11

My profile 43 yo no qualifications as a movie critic

Browsing through the reviews (there is just too many), I stopped after finding out one reviewer who reflected on why this movie was not that popular in the US and why it it was almost not mentioned in the Oscar (that was my impression at least).. Well, the reviewer said something about the view of the "whiteman's burden" made have caused unpleasant reactions.. that could be part of the reason, but my opinion is, the movie was released at a bad political timing and was censored by Hollywood as part of the "Patriot" canpaign designed at getting moral support to the invasion of Irak

Now you may label me now as a "conspiracy paranoid", but let me deliniate some aspects too see if they are not logical.. in the movie, americans go to Japan as mercenaries with a agenda of opening the big arms trade with imperial Japan.. to make matters worse, an ethical crisis occurs to the character of Tom Cruise.. an actor who is still remembered as a patriotic pilot who shot down those dreaded MICs in "Top Gun" ( a movie destined to make the public feel good at their defense expenditure)... talk about a bad timing to reflect and see that your goverment; not only sends you to genocide the american indians, now its time to continue somewhere else!! and what's even worse, he joins the other side!!, not exactly the kind of attitude you need on the troop morale sent to invade Irak under weak grounds.. hell, was it not enough the catharsis done by all those Vietnam movies? (where Tom Cruise did a Nam veteran).. well that was then this is now... lets face it.. why such an epic movie, a superb production and what I consider Cruise's pass to inmortality in the world of true films, was given a "foreign movie" treatment??!!

Perhaps after the dust settles and a new peace period begins, this movie can be seen in its proper context..

4 out of 5 stars "He possess great skill !!!".......2005-12-23

"American Ninja" is one of my favourite 80's actioners produced by the unforgettable Golan-Globus team of "Delta Force" fame.
Though the body count is not massive, there are definitely some stirring scenes, in particular the truck hijack by the black-star ninja and the final confrontation with throwing stars, lasers, mini-bullet firing gloves etc. etc.
Dudikoff is a decent actor, mute most of the time, while the colonel's daughter is just fun.
The reunion with his childhood ninja mentor is high level (unintentional) comedy, "Ninjaish" dialogue galore.
Overall, a solid action film that should be frequently watched and appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Example of 80s Action Movies!.......2005-06-04

some maybe find this movie an old fashioned, but I'm an 80s action movies fan. I Suck Rambo trilogy, Watched "Big trouble in little china" more than 20 times and still watching the Predator occationally. This is not an old fashioned but a classic 80s action! and a good one, most of us have our best memories from that decade, and these movies help us to remember our childhood and our interests. In 80s, We used to watch G.I.JOE which should probably rated as "R" by these days standards. War and fight was the most important part of our lives in 80s. I bought this movie and many 80s actions and I'll buy any new releases of that good time actions!

4 out of 5 stars "The Black Star Ninja has betrayed the code. ".......2005-02-24

I watched this film earlier today and you know what? For being 20 years old this movie holds up remarkably well. Much better than the previous year's NINJA III: THE DOMINATION, which was instantly dated thanks to the FLASHDANCE influence.

New recruit Michael Dudikoff unwillingly gets mixed up in some illegal arms transaction between crooked Army brass and a group of ninjas. He also accidentally arouses the lustful attention of the Colonel's hot tan daughter! But before he can make sweet love he's got to stop the evil ninja clan!

Some reviewers mention this as a "guilty pleasure" I disagree. With great fight scenes, icky sound effects every time somebody gets stabbed, a fun story and a energetic performance by Steve James there's no way you can classify this as a guilty pleasure. It's too good for that.

Judie Aronson who plays Dudikoff's hot girlfriend gets naked a few times in FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER.

D: Sam Fastener (NINJA III: THE DOMINATION, REVENGE OF THE NINJA)

Joe Armstrong - Michael Davidoff (BACHELOR PARTY, TRON)
Curtis Jackson - Steve James (I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA, WEIRD SCIENCE)
Patricia Hickock - Judie Aronson (FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER, WEIRD SCIENCE)

3 out of 5 stars Good for Martial Arts.......2004-09-17

Good martial arts movie. Better than today's versions that are all special effects. Decent storyline but the action was great

4 out of 5 stars Dudikoff, baby!.......2004-02-06

Our buddies at Cannon figured they should strike while the iron was hot and get a little more out of their successful ninja franchise. Having found success with already established action stars, they tried to make their own in the form of MICHAEL DUDIKOFF-THE AMERICAN NINJAAAAAA! Well, Dudikoff never achieved superstardom, but he'll always be recognized as "Joe". His screen presence isn't bad at all. He's got a boyish look and a rather soft spoken demeanor different from most action tough guys. He plays a soldier who, like Rodney, gets no respect. When he finally beats Steve James(a cool sidekick I might add) in a fight, he becomes rather popular. He takes on an army of evil ninjas that threaten the fate of the world! Ther lead ninja is a mean brute who kills his fellow ninjas during routine practices. This movie's fun.....very fun. Sure it's lame as all hell, but someone must have liked it coz it spawned four sequels.

Christopher Lambert, the imposing French actor with the nasal whine best known to American audiences as Scottish swordsman Highlander, plays a rank amateur in The Hunted. He's an American businessman in Japan who lucks into a one-night stand with slinky Joan Chen and winds up a witness to her murder by a mysterious band of black-clad ninjas. Escaping not one but two attempts on his life by a little quick thinking and a lot of dumb luck, he winds up on a harrowing bullet train ride. As swarms of masked assassins decimate passengers in search of the elusive eyewitness, Lambert's laconic protector, rough-edged samurai Yoshio Harada, unleashes a martial arts frenzy of flashing swords in close quarters. His savior is not as altruistic as he seems, however. He just wants to lure mysterious ninja overlord John Lone out of hiding and into a fight to the death on Harada's island fortress, and Lambert is little more than live bait. Though it made few ripples at the box office, The Hunted is a slick and surprisingly smart thriller. Lone and Harada cut striking figures as the warriors following ancient codes in the modern world, and writer-director J.F. Lawton (screenwriter of Pretty Woman and Under Siege) gives them almost as much screen time as ostensible hero Lambert. The action scenes are furious and fast paced, lacking the grace and precision of real Japanese samurai adventures but full of clever flourishes. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A "lost" film.......2007-01-27

The Hunted was the type of movie that briefly appeared in theaters and then quickly vanished. I didn't get to see it until it aired on HBO. This was a film that I regret not seeing on the big screen. After it aired on cable for a short time, it vanished again. Why do such great films often get "lost"? This film is a must-see for fans of the genre or fans of Christopher Lambert.

5 out of 5 stars Manhunt in Tokyo: Bloody sword-play!.......2007-01-27

After a night with a mysterious lady, New York businessman, Mr. Racine, found himself in the middle of a Tokyo under-world assassination. The assassin: none other than the fanatical Kinjo, leader of a radical cult of Ninja assassins. The trouble began when Mr. Racine saw Kinjo's face, and Kinjo's henchmen failed to kill Mr. Racine.
The hunt is on! Racine finds he is now the target of the assassin cult, but uses his wits to evade them until he is taken in by a modern Samurai, Takeda, who is equally fanatical about hunting Kinjo to settle a multi-generational feud. Takeda cares nothing about Racine, he is merely useful as a means to identify Kinjo. The chase through Tokyo climaxes in a savage and bloody assault on the Shinkansen commuter train, where Takeda and his wife dispatch the murderous cult-members in classic Samurai style!
Temporarily safe in Takeda's fortress, Racine befriends the clan swordsmith, Oshima, (played by a real-life famous Karate instructor, Tak Kubota) a clownish, heavy-drinking, but highly-skilled craftsman of weapons.
The final battle ensues, when Kinjo launches an all-out assault on Takeda's island fortress...and the the vendetta is settled by a duel.

Ignore the negative reviews. Its just an action-movie! Although it follows many common themes in a martial-arts film, this one is slightly different from the norm. Of course, real Ninjutsu and Bujutsu is far more interesting and complex than the stereotypes seen in most movies of this category. But again, its just an action-movie! I believe this is Christopher Lambert's best film since The Highlander!

4 out of 5 stars Not Great, But A Very Decent Film: Entertaining!.......2006-10-19

Now, I can understand some reviewers not liking this film. But this happens to be one of those guilty pleasures that I enjoyed immensely. Is it a classic samurai/ninja film? No. However, I found the cinematography to be outstanding, and although the plot is a little far-fetched, it was refreshingly fun. In fact, the entire film was fun. I like samurai films, and especially films from the far east [mainly Japan] And while I can understand purists looking for perfection to be disappointed, if you just sit back and enjoy the film, you will find it much better than many reviewers have stated. They are entitled to their opinion, and I respect that. Some have made very good and vaild points, and since I never give out negative marks on others, I understand and respect their complaints.

However, for me the film was an enjoyable film. I am not a fan of Christopher Lambert [This is the only one of his I own]. But, his portrayal was pretty good [not great]. The strong points of the film for me dealt with the antagonist portrayed by John Lone [head of the Ninja clan] and his nemesis Yoshio Harada [a somewhat protagonist: who also portrayed the sensei in the first Azumi film] When Lambert, and American businessman, witnesses the killing of a woman (Joan Chen) by John Lone, he barely survives the attack himself. Since he is the only one to ever see the face of this Ninja, they seek him out in order to kill him. What ensues is the clan of Harada tries to protect him. Or does Harada use him? There is a great scene of a ninja attack on a bullet train. The film is well worth the watch. Rent it first if you are not sure, I own it, and I am pleasantly happy with the film. Don't take it too seriously, it is a fun watch.

2 out of 5 stars Ninja Flick from the Writer of 'Pretty Woman' (I'm Not Kidding): Poor Actions And Laughable Story .......2006-07-23

Not to be confused with `The Hunted' (2003) directed by William Friedkin.

`The Hunted' (1995) stars French actor Christopher Lambert as Paul Racine, American businessman on trip to modern-day Nagoya, third-largest city of Japan, who happens to witness the killing of a woman by black-masked ninjas. The cult ninja group is actually led by a charismatic leader, Japanese named `Kinjo' who is played by a Chinese actor John Lone, and they begin to search Paul to kill. At the end of the film Paul, an ordinary businessman, proves to be an equal match when fighting against martial arts master Kinjo with a Japanese sword. If you can believe this ridiculous story, you can believe anything.

I can happily ignore all the cultural inaccuracy in films as long as they give me something entertaining, but unfortunately it was not the case with `The Hunted,' of which story slowly follows a beaten path of the genre to the unexciting climax. Moreover, to handle a Japanese sword you need certain kind of gracefulness, which Tom Cruise in `The Last Samurai' managed to acquire after many months' hard training. Lambert et al. show no such thing. He and other ninjas just use them fast and furious, but with no grace and consequently, impact at all. Instead the film substituted the grace of Japanese sword fighting for needless bloody violence, and its pinnacle is the pointless terrorism of the ninjas in the bullet train. This is an insult to Japanese culture, for a ninja could be a spy or an assassin, but he is never a terrorist who would kill innocent passengers.

But the most damaging is the way how the film treats women, who are there to be used for sex scenes. Watching Joan Chen in a Japanese bathtub with Christopher Lambert was something I never expected to see, and it surely represents the attitudes of some (if not all) Hollywood films towards women. And it is not surprising to see the film's director is J. F. Lawton, whose biggest hit is Julia Roberts' `Pretty Woman' (as a writer).

By some distributors (who must have been shocked to know the film's awful content after buying the right) really released this Universal film theatrically in Japan. Since then it has been a cult film for avid Japanese film fans, who take this film as sort of comedy. Really. In addition to the ridiculous casting and the laughable scene where Chris and Joan make love in Japanese bathtub that looks as if made 200 years ago, it has plenty of things that make us laugh - a sweet little girl in pachinko parlor, a kind of gambling place (What is she doing there?); a flight attendant-like female assassin in the bullet train (Come on, it's a train, not an airplane!), and the banging Japanese taiko (drum) concert in the garden of a Nagoya hotel (You just cannot sleep!). Even though this is an action flick, it needs some degree of plausibility, which it totally disregards. And there are poorly done actions, which is another reason that makes me regard `The Hunted' as the Universal Pictures have temporarily stepped into the Ed Wood's Grade-Z territory.

2 out of 5 stars Ok....but ............2006-02-15

I agree with R. Eastwood on mostly of what he says.

Despite that, I have to say that I enjoyed it, since this is one of the few western movies in the genre. Or at least with some decency.

It's a strange movie. It seems that it was written in a hurry, without a real plot purpose. What did it conveyed?

Mr. Lambert really shows his lack of minimun skills in martial arts (And I thought I had seen the worst with David Carradine!)

It's a movie without a main character. It is not Kijo, not Takeda, not even Racine.

I was expecting Takeda to be the real deal, the guy with knowledge and values, but in the end was the real bastard, even more than Kijo.

If we talk about performances, ufff.. Lambert doesn't make it at all, not even the guy who plays Takeda. Whoever, Kijo was excellent !

They introduce this swordsmith character, which is completely out of line. He's a drunkard, at the same time a teaser and an swordsman, who actually teaches Racine a few ninja moves (he knows some ninja style but he's the swordsmith of a samurai???....). The end is a very sad moment because all of these guys in the island die, even Takeda, and Kijo, BUT.....the drunkard comes in a samurai gear, ready for action, and Racine, as nothing had happened, give him a stupid/funny comment.....What was that??????????

On the positive side ....I have to say that the swords choreography wasn't that bad, the kendo fight was alright, and this guy John Long (Kijo) seems to have real knowledge of swordsmanship.

As a conscientious student of Kendo and Iaido, my real delight was the master piece The Last Samurai. One of my top three movies. From every angle, the movie really made it. The performances, the casting, the fight scenes, the narratives, dialogues, photograpies, costumes, the story, the depth of the characters .... so perfect and beautiful I can't believe it. A real gift for us practioners of the japanese sword.

4 out of 5 stars American Ninja 2-Has Dudikoff, great........2007-05-03

Two action movies on one dvd is always good. American Ninja 2 alone is worth the price alone, so I think American Ninja 3 is like a bonus because alone, it is not a must-buy. So let me talk about American Ninja 2 first and give it a stand-alone review.

Michael Dudikoff and Steve James return in American Ninja 2, they were great in the first movie because they kicked a** and had great chemistry since they were good friends in real life, so more of that is in this one.One thing I like about these two, is there total opposite personalities. Joe Armstrong played by Dudikoff is quiet and calm, and only fights when he has to. Curtis Jackson played by Steve James is more talkative and funny and is always ready to go kick some a**, he even says so.

I'd like to say the storyline is kind of terrible, the story in part one was much better, but if you buy this, like me, it's for the action. But basically the Lion which is the main villian's name is having marines captured on an island and being trained by a real ninja after scientific enhancements to fight. Too bad the head ninja played by karate master Mike Stone(the only Asian ninja in this one)can't train his ninja to not be bumbling idiots. He's the only ninja that actually fights like a real ninja and can give Dudikoff a challenge. In the first movie, Dudikoff was the only one who could take on the ninja, of course all of the ninja in that one were Japanese, since this one has marines captured to become ninja, they aren't going to be nearly as good, so Steve James in this one kicks some ninja a**. He shows a little of his martial arts skill to the ninja as well. Plus he's buff as always.

In this one, there's lots of great combat. Dudikoff once again pulls off the martial arts very well, including some great throws outside the bar when a big fat man keeps pushing him until Dudikoff has enough and whoops some punk-a**. This is my favorite part. But some of the ninja are so slow it's funny and they don't pose a challenge for the Dude Meister either. Some are a little clumsy as well. I guess the American ninja is so good, he makes them look like greenhorns. So basically, the leader ninja is the only one who is fast, he shows it when he easily takes apart a civilian in a bar and later many of his own ninja at his demonstration. He also has one of the most corny but funny lines in an action movie of all time. "That damn American ninja. He fights like a tiger." I also would like to know why in part of the movie when Joe Armstrong is driving and a ninja latches on to his truck, and it's like he's the super ninja because he's dragging this ninja all over the place until he leaps out of the truck and it explodes. He could have just stopped the truck, got out, and easily kicked the ninja's a** like he'd done to all the others. I guess the director just wanted a driving chase type scene. Even if it's pointless, it's essential for an action movie.

As far as acting, there's plenty of b-movie bad acting. Dudikoff, James, and Larry Poindexter are the best actors here in this movie. I think Dudikoff and James are just being themselves as usual. Poindexter is a comic relief and doesn't fight that good in the bar fight scene. There's also a girl to save as well, she's pretty and of course Dudikoff saves her when she is captured as bait. James hooks up with a pretty woman as well in the movie. Anyways, the final confrontation is good as well and the super ninja tries to cheat too. And where the heck did he pull that shotgun out from? Anyways, the only real extra is a theatrical trailer, but the action in this movie, and Armstrong and Jackson are too likable not to enjoy this movie. Bad storyline, great action, funny lines, not enough extras, 4 stars.

I give american ninja 2 5 stars and anerican ninja 3 3 stars. It would have been better if they made a DVD that had american ninja 1 and 2 on it rather than 2 and 3

it was awesome, i would tell everybody to watch it, very good show.

5 out of 5 stars Ninjas Ninjas Everywhere!.......2006-03-26

Dudikoff and James come back for another heapin' helpin' of ninja hellraisin'. This time they're after a drug lord. Now if you were a multibillionaire drug lord with a top bio-engineer on staff, how would you protect your investment? Naturally you'd do the logical thing and create an army of Superninjas. That's exactly what this villain does too! Dudikoff and James catch on to this and there's major butt kickin' in store. Dudikoff is still likeable as he snatches arrows out of mid-air, woos a scientists chick and looks like a prettyboy. Steve James is pretty much a scene stealer with his one liners and cool fight scenes. In fact, James is the true highlight of these films coz his fighting style is so cool, and some great facial expressions. Definitely one of the most underrated action stars ever. The superninjas are supposed to be superhuman, but Dudikoff(and everyone else) seem to have no problem dispatching them like any other action movie thugs. Plus, what better way to show off the power of these new superninjas than to have the head ninja slaughter about thirty of them in front of a bunch of potential investors? Very fun movie. American Ninja 3 only really works coz of James, who's pretty much the star of the film. David Bradly steps in for Dudikoff, and isn't all that impressive. To Bradly's credit, he seems to actually have martial arts knowledge(most likely how he got the role, coz it sure wasn't his acting abilities), but zero of Dudikoff's charm(though Bradly can snatch arrows out of the air too!). I've seen worse action stars, but not many. The plot seems similar to Part 2, with a evil scientist dude messing with viruses. He needs Bradly(alive of course) to carry out his fiendish plan, though it's never said what it really is he's trying to do. The villain here(Marjoe from everyone's favorite giant rat movie, Food Of The Gods) is a little more charismatic than the villains from the two previous films, but that's not saying much. Like most reviewers have said, the money is worth it for AN2. However, Part 3 is cool just for the sake of Steve James and his cool fight scenes. Are you a real man? Yeah? Then you need this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Keel Ze American Ninja.......2005-03-24

This is a review of American Ninja 2.

OK. So this movie isn't going to win any major awards. The plot is supposed to suck and the acting is supposed to be terrible. However, anybody who has watched and appreciated this movie knows differently.

The plot can't be that bad. Why are there popular movies today that seem to have borrowed ideas from American Ninja 2? A guy who has amnesia but has special fighting skills (Bourne Identity)? Cloning / genetic research (Jurasic Park)? On a side note, I am pretty sure the idea of cloning ninjas back then was a bunch of bull, but look at where the technology is today.

The acting may not be what this movie is remembered for, but Dudikoff is convincing as the American Ninja. He doensn't say too much, but he knows what's going on and he definitely seems to know how to kill ninjas. Steve James convinces you that he's actually having a good time killing ninjas. The bad guys convince you that they are indeed bad. What more can you possibly need?

Overall, this movie is jam packed with action and cool fighting sequences. There are a coupla cheesy scenes (jumping from the cliff onto the jet boat, and Steve James wrestling with like 15 guys), but that is what makes the movie funny. Its a shame that more movies today can't pull off this type of deliberate unprofessionalism once in awhile. Anyways, American Ninja 2 is a favoritie of mine (although I wouldn't really admit this outside of Amazon).

Couple of minor gripes:

1) Why go through all the trouble of a high speed truck chase, jumping out of the truck at full speed, crashing the truck, and blowing up the truck into the side of building... all to get rid of ONE stinking ninja who is barely hanging on. Couldn't Dudikoff just stop the truck, get out, and then beat up the ninja?

2) Since when do ninja masters start packing sawed off shotguns?

Although American Ninja 3 is included on the other side of the DVD, consider it as a bonus. American Ninja 2 is worth the price alone.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Movie Ever Made.......2007-05-21

Here are only a few reasons why this movie surpasses even Plan 9 as the worst movie ever made.
1. Every cliche in the book has been written in. Like the soldier coming to the retired American Ninja at his Peace Corps classroom to ask for his help in rescuing the other American Ninja where the retired ninja responds "I told you the last time, it was the last time." BAM!
2. All the bad ninjas are COLORCODED! Don't know which ninja is more skilled than the others? Well, they're all wearing prime colors and you know which one is the boss because he's got an eyepatch.
3. The American Ninja enlists the help of some kind of retro-80's junkyard gang to take on the bad ninjas like something out of Mad Max.
4. Lastly we have scenes like the recently un-retired ninja fashioning a new sword. One scene he's got what looks like a led pipe and an grinder and in the next he's got a perfectly polished sword. The best scene however, is where the American Ninja, wearing a t-shirt and jeans is about to attack the bad ninja castle when he jumps into a convenient hole in the ground and immediately jumps back out in full black ninja gear. OH WAIT! I forgot about the scene when he catches a crossbow arrow in his teeth and stabs the guy next to him with it while it's still in his mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this movie. Nothing like a good chuckle and no brain cells required. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves a good bathos.

5 out of 5 stars Great cheese..........2007-05-12

The American Ninja franchise got super cheesey starting with the 3rd installment... this one really adds on more cheese with the teamup of the original ninja and the new one.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome David Bradley Movie.......2006-06-08

Michael Dudikoff and David Bradley make quite a team. I was always a fan of ninja films and I couldn't wait for this title to come out on DVD. I ordered it and was completely satisfied. The picture is great as well as the sound. For some reason I enjoy watching David Bradley fight scenes very much. The guy is very unique. Dudikoff is also brilliant and crushes whatever stands in his way. I value this DVD very much. The bad side is that there are no subtitles, not even english, and the picture is fullscreen unlike the 1st american ninja which is widescreen and a bit better picture quality than the sequels.
This DVD is definitely worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars "Sean, You Can Find Me At The School" ~ Dudikoff And Bradley Shine .......2005-12-22

Michael Dudikofff of 'American Ninja' 1 & 2 comes out of retirement to save David Bradley of 'American Ninja' 3 who is captured in Africa by a band of evil ninja's. Say what you want but I love this movie. After all, who doesn't love story's where a few brave warriors defeat all odds and the enemy to save the day!

Obviously not an Academy Award winner, but who cares. This is a total guy film. A couple of buddies with a six pack or two and you're good to go! Not to forget, the late Robin Stille is a very attractive addition to the story.

5 out of 5 stars Amrican Ninja 4 : A Revolution in Cinema.......2004-02-27

If i was asked to sum up this movie in one word, I think I could.....SUCKY!!! As if it wasn't bad enough that some morons in black jumpsuits can take out a platoon of armed soldiers, the ninja train in garbage!!! They fall off of a balance beam into broken glass???? come on! But seriously the movie would have been much beter if the american ninja went phsyco and killed the nerdy kid and the black side kick guy. If they make another sequal the writer should be strung up. The only reason i gave it 5 stars is because it gave me my new favorite quote...ehem "This isn't a game.....THOSE WERE NINJA!!!!".

5 out of 5 stars entertaining cheese.......2007-07-16

Not the best martial arts movie ever made, but I didn't want the best martial arts movie ever made. I wanted vast amounts of entertaining cheese. American Ninja 5 delivered! Don't even try to take it seriously.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the title, American Ninja 5 does not exist........2007-05-01

When I heard of American Ninja 5 for the first time a few years ago, I thought to myself, I loved the first 4, I got to find this one. Well it's a good thing I didn't since I saw it one late night on Spike TV. Apparently it's a kiddie martial arts movie much more similar to 3 Ninjas than American Ninja. What made the people who made this movie decide to deceive people into thinking that this kid friendly ninja movie is a sequel to the rated R action of American Ninja 1-4? I suppose they wanted to capatalize on the success on 3 Ninjas and slap on the title of American Ninja at the same time actually thinking they would make more money or something.

It's not rated R, and David Bradley doesn't even play Sean Davidson this time. Maybe Michael Dudikoff wasn't available this time again like in part 3 and they thought, everyone wants to see a kid friendly movie instead of the 2 American ninjas teaming up again. What a joke. Instead they team up Bradley as a new character with a 10 year old who, although good at martial arts, but c'mon, he's 10. And if I remember correctly, there was actually ninja on rollerskates in this movie. Oh yeah, and the leader ninja actually wears a cape. Ninja don't wear capes. He looked more like an Asian Dr. Strange then a ninja.

I had heard the original title for this was actually American Dragons. It even had that title when it was on Spike TV. It must have done so bad that before they shipped it to stores they probably changed the title to grab fans of the American Ninja films. Luckily, I was not sucked in, I didn't buy this dvd, I wouldn't even buy it for a dollar. I might take it for free just to sell it to someone I hate. Actually, I wouldn't subject anybody to see this and would use it as a coaster instead.

I wish I could give this 0 stars because it makes me so upset. Please, I do recommend the first 4 American Ninjas which I have on dvd, but don't get this. Just look at the ridiculous cover and know it's terrible. There's a reason I only mention American Ninja 1-4 to anybody and never mention this. Because this is not a sequel! This has nothing to do with the first 4 films! Remember that! Actually don't! Pretend this doesn't exist like I do.

1 out of 5 stars Is this American Ninja or is this Disney?.......2005-09-19

I will state right off the bat that I have always been a fan of the American Ninja series. Yes I know they aren't art but I enjoy the cheesball action and performances. After viewing American Ninja 4, which was rather entertaining in its own B-grade way, I was looking forward to viewing American Ninja 5.

The hookey cover art through me for a loop at first. It's just a lame picture of the characters in the film in stupid poses and mist added in to make it look "mystic". I was hoping the movie would be more entertaining than the cover art led on. Sadly it wasn't.

Here we get the "PG-13/Karate Kid wanna-be" version of American Ninja. David Bradley (American Ninja 3 & 4) returns but this time he plays a different character. He plays Joe Castle and not Sean Davidson from American Ninja 3 & 4. I found that to be a little strange, but oh well. One of his friends (the guy from the Karate Kid series no less) drops off his grandson (named Hiro) for Bradley to look after. Bradley reluntantly agrees and even takes the kid on a date he has that night. His date gets kidnapped by, take a wild guess, a bunch of ninja and he and the annoying Hiro kid go off to South America to rescue her. This is where the story rips-off American Ninja 2. The Ninja are using Bradley's 'girlfriend' (even though he only new her for a day) as blackmail so her father will create a deadly gas. Snore, been there, done that, and better.

Another bummer is that now the great fight sequences are gone. The fights from the previous Ninja enstallments are more tamed down, kid friendly battle scenes with Hiro making stupid comments every now and then. It's as if the filmmakers were targeting fans of the Karate Kid series instead of fans the violent R-Rated American Ninja franchise. Mistake.

To top it off, the music is some of the worst I have ever heard and belongs more to a made for cable Disney movie than a martial arts film.

If you can't tell, this is the Disney version of an American Ninja film. Hell I thought any minute I would see Herbie the Love Bug driving down the street to great our heros. Only buy this DVD if your a completest. Otherwise your better off buying American Samurai, which would have been a far better American Ninja sequel than this tame junk.

3 out of 5 stars a far fetched sequel.......2004-08-27

Too right, American Ninja 5 is clearly aimed at kids, with scarce violence, hiperactive martial moves and "mystical" ninjas flying around. Special effects are terrible, martial arts coreography is quite good (for a person who enjoys martial arts) and acting is very B, even Z, I'd say. Not a bad movie if you're 12 years old or really into martial arts. David Bradley is not that bad acting, I've seen worse martial arts actors, and I wreckon the kid who played Hiro sucked a little more. Ninjitsu aspect of the movie just goes to far fetched: ninjas of all colours, bad special effects, an invincible David Bradley, who finds all weapons effective and little-realistic blows. Lacks the magic of the first movies but still good for kick and punch fans.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a look if you're a martial arts fan.......2003-04-26

The fifth part of this saga may not be the best one (the carisma of Michael Dudikoff was unique) but in my opinion, it's definately worth a look if you are a martial arts fan. To start off with, Michael Dudikoff was not a martial artist. David Bradley is, so the fighting sequences and coreography are a lot better than the first two movies. On the other hand, I have to agree with the other reviewers as it being a cheesey movie with a story that just wastes the cliché and certainly aimed at kids. In a nutshell, the perfect movie to watch on a Saturday after lunch. Very inoffensive but with good martial arts moves and in my opinion, except American Ninja 3, 4 and 5 are two very good martial arts films with an actor who is not so bad in front of the cameras.
