Customer Reviews:
GREATEST ANIMATED SERIES OF THE 80's but..........2007-08-26
Despite giving this 3 stars (you'll know why as you read further), I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series to everyone. D&D was the BEST Saturday morning series of the 80's, possibly rivaling the syndicated HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE in terms of content. It (along with THUNDAAR THE BARBARIAN) would also be the LAST great Saturday morning animated series until CADILLACS & DINOSAURS. To me, D&D played like a mystical version of LAND OF THE LOST, but with better creatures, and Sheila the Thief was the hottest cartoon chick at the time(and still is in my top 5). Sound effects from both Hanna-Barbera and Filmation cartoons can be heard in D&D, making it even more enjoyable. There honestly wasn't an episode I didn't like, and it's great that the powers at BCI released the entire series (and a killer supplemental disc to boot)on DVD. I wished that the supplemental disc had contained interviews with the voice actors. It would have been interesting to hear their perspectives on D&D then and now, being that Willie Aames and Katie Leigh are Christians and that the Religious Right was supposed to have a hand in the show's cancellation (actually due to low ratings, according to several sources on the supplemental disc). Also, you get various openings/endings,an episode guide, an excellent short fan film "Choices", an audio recording of the unfilmed series finale "Requiem" (Katie Leigh being the only cast member reprising her character, yep, Sheila!),and an interactive game and booklet to boot!
My reason for giving this a three-star rating was the packaging (and this may be mentioned in other reviews, which I haven't read yet). While the discs are all one-sided, they're stacked on top of each other and barely held in place, which caused disc 2 to become dislodged and possibly scratched. The plastic wrapping looked like it had been rewrapped (loosely held together with , giving me the suspicion that what I purchased may have been a returned/used product; this might also account for the scratches on disc 2 (which thankfully didn't hinder playback).I know that Amazon warns its customers about disc dislodgement but as to possibly reselling returned products? Also, the episode THE GIRL WHO DREAMED TOMORROW is actually on disc 2, not 3 as the episode guide says. BCI needs to come up with a better packaging of their products. This seemed like a rush job.
great gift .......2007-08-17
i gave this as a xmas gift to a friend who grew up watching the show. he was absolutely thrilled to receive this dvd set. makes a great collectors item.
The 80s Cartoon Just As I Remember It.......2007-08-13
As a long time fan and someone who spent the better part of a year trying to collect these on the internet, I'm happy to see that they finally realized that there are enough fans of the show to release these on DVD. Great addition to anyone's collection, especially those fans of 80s cartoons. As for the packaging, it's not bad except for fact that the booklet included with the set had the pages ripped out.
Revisiting my childhood..........2007-08-11
Like many others, I was addicted to this show on CBS, and my dad taped the episodes on VHS, tapes of which are still lying around. I remember loving Sheila so much that when I'd learned to ride a bike, I biked around the block, met two girls playing outside, and introduced myself as Sheila.
That was about 24 years ago. I didn't even know this DVD set had been released until I randomly thought to check online. I haven't yet finished watching all the DVDs, but the first two I've watched have taken me back: Uni's little screams and grunts, Bobby's little boy frustration, and Eric. Everything about Eric! Finally having this complete set is a great feeling; I can't wait to get to all the special features...
They did this one right ..........2007-08-10
All the episodes are here for my 6yo boy to watch. Plus there's Cracker Jack type extras in the HUGE case that holds the DVD's. Quality, clarity, who cares ... I'm 37yo and grew up with a HUGE metal thing on top of my folks house so I could see a guy use this awesome energy-bow on Saturday mornings.
There's mystery, intrigue, AND it's made in the time before political correctness; so there's all these white kids and one "Token" (thanks Matt and Trey) black kid who's the athletic one of the bunch. Cool dragons, bad guys, a magical, mysterious hippie type midget.
Awesome Saturday morning fair!!!

Wrath of the Dragon God, the sequel to the unfortunate 2000 theatrical release Dungeons and Dragons, is a pleasant surprise in that it not only hews closer to the popular role-playing game that provides its source material, but it's also an enjoyable fantasy adventure with plenty of action and special effects. Longtime movie heel Bruce Payne, who played a second-string villain in the first film, returns here as the evil sorcerer Damodar, who uses a sinister magic orb to launch an attack against a kingdom; a brave but untested group of adventurers (all character types from the game) band together to fight Damodar and his legion of monsters. Gerry Lively, a veteran director of photography on numerous low-budget genre films, guides the proceedings with a capable hand, and the script wisely jettisons the aggravating humor of the previous film in favor of straightforward action and derring-do. --Paul Gaita
Description
This sequel to Dungeons & Dragons, based on the popular role-playing game, fills the screen with amazing visual effects of spectral ghouls, diabolical traps, thundering armies and huge winged dragons. The story follows five champions of Izmer who must perform prodigious feats of brain, brawn and sorcery.

not as bad as everyone wrote.......2007-08-13
ok... i ll agree that this isnt the best movie ever.. but it has its moments. the acting wasnt that bad... but the movie wasnt like the game that much.. i wanted more traps and stuff... but i bought it and im standing by that purchase.
So bad that it comes back around to good again........2007-07-11
This is the best comedy of the year! Too bad it was supposed to be action-adventure. I would describe the plot, but it really isn't worth talking about. The action? Bad. Special effects? Laughably bad. D&D enthusiasts will probably legitimately enjoy the film... but this review is for the rest of us.
What is notable is the audio commentary. Apparently they couldn't get the writer, director, or any of the cast for that matter. They had to go and get game developers to comment on the movie... and even they couldn't take it seriously. The commentary really is parody as the game designers pretend that they are Orc-barbarians, halflings, and the like commenting on the adventurers in the film. Too funny. Rent it, laugh at it, then return it.

Dungeons & Dragons-Wrath of the Dragon God (DVD)
I guess when Hollywood gets really desperate they start looking for different things they can make a movie out of. You know comic books, toys, board games, computer games, etc. I wonder what's next?
One would hope they'd read one of David Weber's or John Ringo's books and make a movie from it. The Honor Harrington series would be good or the Empire of Man series.
Dungeons & Dragons began life as a quest board game. You know one of those you wander around looking in every door, chamber, or hidey hole you can seeking:
- Tools,
- weapons, or
- Items of power, such as rings and such.
Meanwhile while you're searching something or the other is trying to kill you. These combats are interspersed on occasions with long spells of absolute boredom until the end of the game, if you survive, to have some kind of dramatic, climatic battle
Unfortunately making a movie out of boring game results in a boring movie. The computer game, at least tests your skill somewhat.
In the movie, the evil Damodar does not fear death. He's already dead and the champion must save the world before his girlfriend becomes undead herself. Rotting from the feet upward, so hurry, guy.
There are five champions seeking the black orb that has been hidden for a thousand years. That means that four are expendable. You'll just have to guess at which four go "Tango Uniform".
Now that I've watched it one time I'm wondering who I can give it to, hmm, maybe my stepson who likes Ghost Rider
Don't waste your money on this one.

Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-06-14
I'm not an art or film critic, just an average Joe that enjoys good entertainment.
I saw this in some random manner, on cable, bored probably. I love this genre, long time RPG player, and fantasy buff, but after seeing the first one, I must have been truly board to watch this.
Imagine my surprise when I was COMPLETELY entranced! It was great fun! Not just following the "rules" of D&D, but telling a good story, with well done dialog and acting, (again, no critic, but I know what I like).
It's not a "blockbuster", I imagine it had a low budget, but very well worth the cost of the DVD. Give this a look if you like the genre, and were disappointed with the first.
Better than the first.......2007-03-27
This is a good solid D&D movie. All the basic character types are represented well in the film and they haven't tried to adapt it to what hollywood think a good movie should be. In the first movie the central rogue character was your typical hollywood charismatic heroic good guy with a comic relief sidekick. There's none of that here. The rogue is what you'd expect. Someone of dubious morals who does most of his things for money.
The traps were well done in the dungeons but the mage who went on the adventure could have been done better, no magic missile or anything. I think she was throwing lightning bolts constantly but they were not used correctly. There even was a cleric of Obad-Hai(shock horror to the bible belt) but I didn't see him use any healing magic.
In general most characters in the film were a little one dimensional except for the main two but they were well done in that dimension.
Btw Damodar is the same character from the first film cursed by Jeremy Irons' mage charcter into a state of undeath for failing him. (The curse automatically went off when Irons died at the end of the first film). So the character is a fighter. With the help of some evil priests in his service at the start of the movie he recovers an artifact and any magic he performs through the movie is through the use of the artifact, nothing else. The Lich even tells him that he's not capable of using it to its fullest potential! He is not a sorceror!

There is trouble in Izmer. With the emperor dead from an assassin's poison, the 16-year-old princess Savina (Thora Birch) inherits not just the throne but also the royal scepter, which has the power to command gold dragons. With a youthful idealism, she decides all people should be equal, from lowly commoners to the ruling-class, magic-wielding mages. This doesn't sit well with the mages, so Archmage Profion (Jeremy Irons) leads a revolt in the Council against Savina's rule, forcing her to relinquish the royal scepter. In order to maintain her power, she decides she needs the rod of Savrille, which can control red dragons. To retrieve it, she hires two bumbling thieves, Ridley (Justin Whalin) and Snails (Marlon Wayans), and an apprentice mage (Zoe McLellan). The true trouble in Izmer is the fact that it's a poorly imagined world that cribs more from Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark than it does from the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game that shares its title. Director Courtney Solomon optioned the rights to the game in 1991, when he was 21, and should have spent the years since then drafting a coherent script. Mediocre special effects take precedence over story, and the actors try to make up for that by hamming it up. Irons, in particular, covers his embarrassment by chewing the scenery and spitting it out. Often unintentionally funny, Dungeons & Dragons is that fun kind of bad movie, whose cult status would be all but guaranteed if it weren't for a slow second act mired in the boring bumbling of the awkward thieves. Still, there are plenty of laughs to be had. --Andy Spletzer
Customer Reviews:
Dungeons & Dragons is sure to disappoint fans of the game.......2007-09-06
"Dungeons & Dragons" is sure to disappoint fans of the game. It is an okay movie but not a great one. The story is fairly weak and the adventure mediocre.
The story is about two thieves and a dwarf that stumble into a quest to get a magical staff that can control red dragons. This is in an effort to help the Empress so she can have more strength against the senators that disagree with her policy and want to overthrow her. The Empress already has the gold staff that controls gold dragons but I guess she wants all the dragons on her side.
As for the characters in the film, the best are the two thieves. Marlon Wayans, who plays one of the thieves, gives some comic relief with his squeals and witty remarks. The women in the movie were unattractive and are not the busty vixens from the artwork of the "Dungeons & Dragons" games and books. I found the Empress (Thora Birch) to be highly annoying, hardly the feeling you should get from the one running the land.
If you are not expecting too much and enjoy fantasy, you can give "Dungeons & Dragons" a try but don't say I didn't warn you.
This was a joke right?.......2006-12-03
This was almost as bad as those nerdy guys out in the park acting out scenes from the game in their cheaply made costumes. Well, actually I'd rather watch them than this movie. At least I can throw things at them. All I have to say for this movie is wow...I would not want this put on my resume if I had any involvement in it.
Not as bad as most would have you believe........2006-10-22
While not a masterpiece of any kind (the film barely exceeds mere competence) I didn't find D&D to be as bad as the negative reviews claimed. I put off watching it for so long for this reason, but it was enjoyable enough.
Comparisons to the LOTR trilogy are inevitable, so I'm not going to avoid it. I didn't really like the LOTR trilogy. It just seemed to be a bunch of movies that everyone was forced to like and if you didn't then there must be something wrong with you. Yes, they are much, much better made than the rather quaint D&D, but if you want a smaller, unassuming fantasy ride then don't completely rule this movie out.
The visual effects and production design of D&D are very similar to Paul Anderson's Mortal Kombat. Yes, it looks fake, but with just a little bit of suspension of disbelief you'll not even notice. I have a feeling that Courtney Solomon tried really hard to make it a good film but his talent doesn't extend as far as his enthusiasm.
In terms of character and story it is all pretty bland and generic. There's nothing in this movie that you haven't seen somewhere else. The actors do their best with the tepid dialogue and almost manage to not look embarrassed. The best thing about the film is it's surprisingly ferocious (maybe a bit too OTT) sound design. And the Dragon fight at the end was impressive for a medium budget film.
I was actually surprised to find Joel Silver's name on the closing credits. I will assume that without him the film would have been a REAL stinker. And what's with that ending?
Either way, I am still interested in the sequel.
The DVD is in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with a very loud Dolby 5.1 sound design.
This "movie" is truely awful.......2006-04-09
I'm a big fan of the role playing game called Dungeons and Dragons. However, this pile of dung masquerading as a movie bears no resemblance to the game. Do not waste your time watching this atrocity. This movie is just plain bad, bad, bad!
A setback to the genre.......2006-04-08
Like everybody else... I feel the need to qualify the beginning of my review by saying that I have been a fan of DnD and fantasy for well over a decade. When I first heard this movie was coming out I was extremely excited, and friends and I went to see it on one of the first nights. When I left.... well, I wondered how, after soooo many years of waiting and finally getting a real big screen debut for the genre, they could drop the ball so very very badly. The worst part is, there was a really good movie in there somewhere, just dying to get out. They clearly did their work on the special effects, which were excellent, but they tripped very badly with the dialogue and storyline. Even the casting (take away the dialogue) wasn't all that bad. Everybody certainly looked the part, but it all ended up feeling very contrived. The comic relief was heroically unfunny, and the "serious" scenes turned out to be the true cause for amusement.
Now, several years (and viewings), later, I don't hate the movie.... I just look at it as a wasted opportunity. Had they really done their homework on this one, I truly think this could have launched the fantasy genre into the mainstream, but as it is I think it did more harm than good. It reinforced the idea that DnD is stupid, hokey, and a game played only by strange repressed teenagers. I had hoped that this could open the door for things like the "Dragonlance" Chronicles, or some of the "Forgotten Realms" storylines to make it into production (much like X-Men did for the comic book genre). Alas, such will have to wait.
All told, this is an average movie that fans of fantasy, with suitably low expectations, can enjoy. It could have been so much more, and I think that is where a lot of the fans venom is coming from. Try to enjoy it for what it is, because our movie options in the genre are severely limited, and despite its flaws there are some redeeming qualities that make it fun enough to watch.... that being said, I've also heard rumor that the movie gets that much better after a couple beers. Enjoy.

Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons and Dragons Adventure is not a film sequel to Dungeons and Dragons (2000), but the DVD equivalent of an interactive role-playing novel. There are over 900 short digitally animated sequences, leading every so often to a choice to be made with the remote control, resulting after about 90 minutes in one of four possible endings. Just as the original D&D was inspired by The Lord of the Rings, the scenarios here are Tolkien rehashed: a newly arisen darkness is seeking an ancient ultimate weapon, against which stand a human warrior, Regdar; a halfling, Lidda; and an elven wizard, Mialee. The CGI is closer to Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles than the pseudo-realism of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the electronic score is tiresome and the contemporary voice acting, using such expressions as "heads up" and "
or something," is laughable.
What of the interactive element? Essentially it offers two equally uninteresting paths at the end of every major scene--uninteresting because it's impossible to care what happens to the marionette-like stereotypes no matter what they do. While the adventure does offer plenty of well-choreographed cartoon-style action, interacting with Scourge of Worlds is ultimately about as much fun as watching someone else play a computer game--and that's just the first time through. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
Scourge of Worlds, Interactive DVD.......2007-08-29
Scourge of Worlds is a Dungeons and Dragons style of story with the main characters being a fighter, mage, and theif. They have the oportunity to join with a cleric or a druid. As the movie unfolds, the viewer is given many oportunities to decide which choice the characters will make thus changing the story each and every time you watch the movie. The graphics are very high quality, obviously computer generated not drawn. My only complaint about the movie was... it was too short! The choice we made the first time made the movie about 40 minutes long. We watched it a second time and had a totally different ending which surprised us. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and plan to watch it many times choosing different paths each and ever time.
Happy memories.......2007-05-13
If you enjoyed the old adventure books of flipping pages after making a decision, this dvd is a must have
Entertaining and Fun.......2006-09-04
If you're expecting a Lord of the Rings type Academy Award winning movie or a good ol' fashion slobber knocker gaming session, this movie/game are neither. However, it is a fun and entertaining blend of movie and role playing game action. The graphics, sound, and acting may not be Oscar worthy, but they are more than good enough to deliver an exciting and fun escape for the hour or so it takes to play through one of the many different scenarios.
I played it a few times through and tried making different decisions along the way. It was quite fun to get a somewhat different story based on those decisions each time. In short, the graphics, sound, and acting serve their purpose well and all in all this is just a fun piece of Dungeons and Dragons entertainment to own.
Fair..........2006-03-08
This is a nice item to add to a collection of D&D trinkets, but in NO WAY is good. It is lacking in story and acting. A lot of the scenes were pleasant, but I was never "compelled" by the story.
I would only recommend this to a hard core collector or a funny break from your current game...
Surprising entertaining..........2005-12-15
I purchased this with my Mom in mind but appears that I liked it and the options versus a video game. I have decided to loan to a few interested relatives. But I have not explored all the options of the game. The first time I played it, I made a few wise choices and ended up ending the game very quickly. I picked a longer road and still managed to make good decisions. I also made a few bad choices and the end result wasn't pretty at all. But it was worth the money spent and for people who don't video games this is perfect for those Fanstasy fans out there. I loved playing this game and movie. So, maybe I can some people interested in my miniatures games after playing this game.

My favorite from my childhood.......2006-09-19
This is hands down my favorite cartoon from when I was growing up. It's unfortunate that it didn't last longer and have a proper conclusion.
The whole series is released in the UK as a boxed set. I was tired of waiting for a US release (I am starting to doubt one is ever coming), and when I heard a set existed already in the UK I got pretty upset. Honestly, how long does it take to release these episodes in some form on DVD. I mean an english language version set already exists. Just release that. I decided to make my DVD player region free and import, and I don't regret it. I wish I had the foresight to tape all these episodes on VHS. Since I've purchases the UK DVD and watched the whole set I feel like I can give a good review of the quality of the UK boxed set.
The whole series is included. Unfortunately all the episodes have the first seasons opening attached to them (just like the versions jetix is showing). Nothing too special was done to clean up the episodes. The visuals look fine, but you can noticed some distortions to the audio due to age at some points(maybe I'm just too sensitive in these regards). There are some great extras including concept art, character profiles, the script for the final episode, an interview with Michael Reaves (writer) and commentary tracks. The commentary tracks were fan commentary. Three UK fans watched the episode and comment on them. The commentary is a mix of the fans reminiscing about the show, debating theories on the unexplained bit of overarching plot, and giving us background information about the episode. Nothing too special, but it was interesting enough to listen to a couple of the better episodes with the commentary on while I was doing other stuff. Is this the best presentation they could possibly muster for the series? No, it is a rough around the edges boxed set, but I'm very happy that it was released none the less. Considering this is the only way to buy the episodes, I was pleased with the boxed set.
As for the series itself, it is simply brilliant. With a premise like this the characters could easily fall into one dimensional roles, but all the kids in the series feel like fully realised individuals. For example, as the series goes on you notice that Eric isn't just a spoiled rich coward. He sometimes gives us short hints as to how his life was before they fell into the realm included some of the causes of his insecurity issues. Also when Eric really needs to, he can be the brave knight that his clothing suggests. Especially when his friends are in danger. What Eric says and what Eric thinks are two completely different things. He gives the others a hard time, but its clear he loves the other children. Another example would be that Hank isn't as reliable and infallible as the beginning of the series portrays him. Though he is the most decisive of the children and the only one who is willing to take on the responsibility of leadership, he makes many mistakes over the course of the series. Hank can sometimes let his emotions cloud his judgement, and this will often spur an arguement between him and the more realistic Eric. Eric is obviously the most pessimistic character in the series, but he is also sometimes the voice of reason. The episodes written by Micheal Reeves really stand out as the best in the series. The best episode of the series, Dragon's Graveyard, is a very compelling episode and parts of it still give me goosebumps because it is just so moving. The animation isn't on par with the current standards but the series is almost 20 years old at this point so some slack needs to be given.
If you are a longtime fan and you want to own the series I would recommend importing this set. If you haven't seen the series yet, then check your channel guide. It's still being shown on jetix, and you are missing out because this is really one of the most underappreciated gems of 80s popculture.
It's still on, people!.......2006-08-21
Yes, this is a good cartoon and rocked back in the '80s, but if you'd check Toon Disney's schedule on Sunday nights, you'd see this classic series still running... for the moment, anyway. I've seen it randomly on other networks over the years as well, so get yourself a DVR with a nice search function if you're missing out. Enjoy!
always record your favorite shows!.......2006-07-25
I absolutely loved this show as a kid, and in my genius at a young age I recorded most of them on VHS off the television. I knew I would probably never see it again when the 700 Club campaigned to get it off the air - the religious fanatics won out unfortunately. Advertisers pulled out and the show was cancelled. Mattel and CBS are probably reluctant to put this out on DVD in the U.S. because of all the flack they got from the religious right in the '80's - Venger was just too evil at the time, and the show was marketed to 6-10 year olds based on the commercials that were aired with the show - a big mistake. This cartoon is definitely geared for teenagers - it has grown-up themes and characters - though in comparison to current video games and anime, it's tame by the standards of today.
Dungeons and Dragons is a lesson for all children - get a DVD recorder and tape your favorite shows or you may never see them again!
I transfered my Dungeons & Dragons VHS copies to DVD, but the quality isn't so good because I've watched them so many times. Please don't ask me to send you a copy. I thank God I have the BRILLIANT episode "Dragon's Graveyard." There has never been ANY cartoon that has compared to this fantastic story - the twist at the end is a shocker. I would love to have D&D in a box set, but I'm not holding my breath. Fortunately, I don't have to.
RECORD YOUR FAVORITE SHOWS, because 10, 20, 30 years from now, you're going to be crying for them if you didn't! And record shows WITH the commercials. The ads I recorded with D&D back in the 80's are HILARIOUS! Personally, I would love to see a box set of this show with the commercials of the period included because they are so funny... and outrageous.
I want a copy NOW.......2006-05-08
Hey, if anyone reads this, PST where I can get a US/canada version..even if it's a "unofficial" copy. I thought this show was awesome and probably ahead of it's time. I still have mental images when I was a kid about some of the episodes. I luved that dragon graveyard episode and I can still picture that evil tornado when evil came into town. Man this was sweet. Seriously, I need copies now!
Great series! Available as a box set at amazon.co.uk!.......2006-04-18
This is a great show! The evil Venger rocks! It is available as a 4 disc box set in Europe (at amazon.co.uk).

Enjoy.
