Lake Placid is total trash--and, as a result, fairly entertaining. Yet another entry in the horror subgenre of giant animals running amok, Lake Placid features a giant crocodile that has somehow found its way to an isolated lake in Maine. The absurdity of crocodiles in Maine sets the tone for the entire movie, which has no ambitions beyond mixing a little fright with a little humor. Bridget Fonda (Point of No Return, Jackie Brown) plays a paleontologist sent to investigate a large tooth; Bill Pullman (Independence Day, Lost Highway) is a fish and game warden just trying to keep the peace; Oliver Platt (Funny Bones, Flatliners) plays a loose-cannon mythology professor who swims with crocodiles for sport; and Brendan Gleeson (an excellent but little-known actor, most noted for The General) is a local sheriff with a short temper and a big gun. Add a few gruesome dismemberments, Betty White as a cantankerous old broad who may have murdered her husband, and a cow hanging from a helicopter, and there you have it: Lake Placid. (Curiously, this concoction was put together by David E. Kelley, better known as the creator of TV's Ally McBeal and The Practice.) --Bret Fetzer
Description
An investigative team, armed with state-of-the-art equipment, high powered weaponry and a biting sense of sarcasm, must work together to defeat Black Lake's most ferocious resident: a 30-foot prehistoric crocodile! Betty White co-stars as the cantankerous Mrs. Bickerman - a role you've got to hear to believe - in this terrifying tale of survival that "combines humor and thrills with remarkable deftness."
Customer Reviews:
Tongue-n-cheek humor elevates this "us against it" thriller........2007-07-31
Let me say this right off, it's no Jaws, okay? However, not all in this genre should be compared to that masterpiece. This film stands on its own four legs just fine --lol!
This film is the brainchild of David E. Kelly of Picket Fences, Ally McBeal, and other such TV gems. Here he puts together a fine cast of screwball characters, intelligent and funny dialogue, and some geniunely scary scenes of brutality with a limo-sized gator.
Bridget Fonda brings an Ally McBeal-like presence to the role she plays as museum scientist who just got ditched by her boss who then finds an excuse to get her out of the office so he can continue a fling with her best friend who works there. Their confrontation is hysterically funny and quite sad at the same time which is what Kelly is brilliant at bringing to both the small and big screen.
Bill Pullman is perfect with his typical wry sense of humor, boyish charm, and reluctant hero bit. Oliver Platt is . . . well . . . just playing Oliver Platt only as an expert on crocks. He is a solid actor, but plays the same kind of role over and over again very much like Jack Black who played . . . Jack Black in the recent King Kong. Actually, he was Carl Denhem, but you get my meaning. The sheriff in this story is his nemesis and is absolutely terrific. Sorry, I don't recall or know that actor's name.
Betty White steals the film out from everyone in the best role of the film. Her in-your-face, foul-mouthed, but cute grandma looks have you holding your stomach with laughter every time she's on the screen. Not many mature actresses could have pulled this role off as effectively as White did.
This is a film with great repeat value and is very much along the lines of "Godzilla" and "Tremors" as noted by a top "Spotlight" review. Be warned though, as humorous and light-hearted as the humor often is in this flick, it IS violent and graphic in the attack scenes.
Lastly, while I have your attention, let me recommend another outstanding "us against it" genre film that receives very little attention, but is outstanding. That film is Prey with Bridget Monyhan of I, Robot fame. Again, it's no Jaws, but it is outstandingly acted, graphically and intensely violent, and extremely well-written.
Not Horrible/Not Scary Enough.......2007-07-28
This flick is like David E Kelley and the gang decided to go on vacation while making a sci-fi flick. The 1st mistake is there's no mystery because you know the monster is a giant crocodile 15 minutes into the movie. I also think the pretentious gradeschool dialogue frequently gets in the way but to Kelly that's sort of an end unto itself if you're familiar with Alley McBeal. The only 'adult' in this flick is Bill Pullman who exists as a foil for everyone elses' antics. If you've seen the commercial where everyone in the office is a monkey then you get a sense of how the Pullman character must feel here. That totally undermines the scariness of the movie for me but on it's own level and especially if you're a fan of the David E Kelly style you'll probably like it. For me mixing Alley McBeal with Jaws doesn't work. On the jacket the movie looks to be very scary but it really ain't. Your kids should be able to watch a movie like this without getting nightmares but there is one relatively disturbing scene where a diver is pulled onto a boat bitten in half. That scene could resonate negatively with some kids.
Just excellent "monster" movie with a great sense of humour.......2007-07-27
The monster movie part of this film is secondary, for me, to the comedy aspect. There is just wonderful dialog and interaction with pretty much all the characters and it is darned funny. The Betty White character is hilarious. The cgi is always at least good and sometimes excellent. The first time you see it you will get a few very effective shock/scare moments, but after that you will want to see it again for the humour that just keeps you laughing each time you see it...kind of like a Coen brothers movie.
This thing is very, very good.
A Wacky Comedy of a Horror Movie.......2007-06-30
There are so few movies like this one, and it's hard to categorize it. I like it, but it would not have worked at all without a few things:
1. Miss Betty White and her sailor mouth. I wish I had her for a grandma. I want to be like that when I'm old.
2. They don't show too much of the monster, a 30-foot crocodile. This leaves you wanting more, and that's good. No overkill.
3. The mix of comedy and gore/thrills works very well here. More horror movie writers and directors should remember that it's really fun to get scared and then laugh your brains out, or to laugh and then be scared stupid.
4. The dynamic between the mystic nutjob and the sheriff is good. These two burly jerks are actually a lot alike (stubborn, pigheaded), which makes their animosity realistic.
Basically this movie is just a fun ride. It makes no sense but it's a hoot.
A five star popcorn movie........2007-06-03
I've just finished watching it and now I've restarted the DVD so I can write this review as I watch it. The bottom line on this movie is basicly you take all of the mutant animal type movies, gators, sharks, and so on Lake Placid is probably the best put together, written, acted, and directed movie of them all. It is not boring.
PROS:
1. It has actors that can act. That's a star.
2. A director that can direct. Thats a star.
3. A writer who can write. That's a star.
4. The movie is a variation of several older ideas I have already named above but is carried out in an interesting way--the acting, and writing. That's a star. The idea is a croc finds it way to a back water lake, sets up housekeeping, and years later gets to be 30 feet long--that's a lot of croc! The local sheriff -- poor guy- seems to be hated by the entire world. He seems to have been born in a world full of sarcastic people that hate him. He gets it from everybody in the movie all the way up to Betty White. Everytime they find a head he gets slapped. Everytime he ask a simple question someone unloads on him. The croc, of course, has to live in his area. The scientist arrive, they go after the croc, he goes with them, one of them slaps him (the heads), one calls him fatty, Betty White calls him Sherlock--after Sherlock Homes. Yep...that sheriff is cannon folder for the universe. I will say, he gave back as much as he got--real funny.
5. There is some cussing, not a huge amount--certainly not like they usually do in these modern movies...just occasionally.
six. There is a lot of dialogue in this movie and is a big part of the interesting and funny parts. It is what seperates this movie from almost all monster movies. A nice song from Tom Jones (It's Not Unusual) that adds to the atmosphere and part of one of the song from the Partridge Family (I Think I Love You)--I'm not sure but it didn't sound like them singing.
7. Few sub plots here so most of the movie is about the monster hunt--what sub plots there are help with the movie.
That's that.
CONS:
1. There isn't much in the way of CONS: for this type of popcorn movie. It is plenty interesting, funny, and lots of sharp wit to who enjoy a sharp sarcastic retort in realitly. I do.
So there it is. I recommend this movie to the popcorn crowd and those of us who like that sharp wit in our movies--Casablanca had some. Considering the movie has some fine writing and acting I recommend the full spread, popcorn, a couple of hot dogs, and something to wash it down with. Bye!
P.S. Buy, don't rent.

Customer Reviews:
Fluffy -- but it has Rose and Miranda.......2007-05-20
This is a goofy, lightweight Australian comedy about a teenaged genius named Placid Lake who forsakes his hippie upbringing after suffering continual physical abuse at the hands of school classmates. So, he dresses like George W. Bush and joins an insurance firm. Of course, things don't turn out quite as planned.
I don't watch THE OFFICE (British or American versions) but I imagine the quirky comedy in those must be something like this. If it weren't for the brazenly sexual moments (sans nudity), this would make a television sitcom... or it might still make a television sitcom.
The movie has dreams of being a profound message film but the result is so lacking in depth that it winds up half-hearted -- spinning mixed messages on the issues of parental expectations, conformity and non-conformity, and a not-so-mixed message on vengeance. So, pick your interpretation. Or better yet, don't bother. Just enjoy the pastel visuals (this was obviously not an American production), the charming actors and just-funning attitude.
Two of my favorites are here. Britisher Miranda Richardson and Aussi Rose Byrne (looking like the prettiest girl-geek ever). Coincidently, when I first saw Rose (THE GODDESS OF 1967), I kept thinking of other actresses she reminded of -- Jessica Alba, Shannon Doherty, and Miranda Richardson. Too bad Miranda plays the boy's mother here.
A Diamond in the Rough........2006-11-02
The Rage in Placid Lake is another gem to which my eyes were opened by the power of recommendation. It is that same recommendation that I now gladly distribute.
You may or may not have ever heard of Australian Indie Rocker Ben Lee. I cannot say that I am familiar with his catalog of music, but I can say that he was very entertaining as Placid Lake, our young protagonist who struggles to see how, or even if, his pure-bred individuality fits into today's conformist society.
Placid Lake is a rebel without a cause born of wildly outlandish parents who seem not to have their feet firmly planted anywhere near reality. His parents promote every activity for Placid to develop his own identity and to buck the system. After an accident, Placid wakes up in the hospital with a new-found drive to legitimize himself in the eyes of society; he wants to get a job selling insurance. The sharp contrast between his upbringing and his epiphany added cozy comic-relief to an intelligent story about the importance of "self."
The role models in Placid's life were polar extremes. He has his pacifist parents, who spend a little too much time disrobed around the home, and he has his manager at work, who is lost in middle management and has seemingly lost his ability to produce emotion.
The conversations that Placid has with his manager were my favorite aspect of the movie. Yes, his perspectives were narrow and extreme, but the points he made were poignant.
I also enjoyed Placid's best friend, Gemma. Gemma is a beautiful and intelligent young lady who is pushed urgently by her father to stay on track to someday make incredible breakthroughs in modern science. I like how she was written into the story in a way that Placid was able to do soul searching on behalf of them both. She was a first-hand witness to his journey into corporate monotony, from which they both learned valuable lessons about the direction of their lives.
Go ahead; see The Rage in Placid Lake. You won't be disappointed (well I hope not anyway!).
Garden State to the next level.......2005-06-06
If you like Garden State, this movie takes the same ideas to another level. Very real, interesting characters, and laugh out loud hysterical scenes. Ben Lee is great . . . loved it! My favorite from the Film Movement series so far, although followed closely by He Died With A Felafel In His Hand.
'The Rage in Placid Lake' is a gem........2005-03-19
I can't believe I didn't hear about this film when it was released. I must have missed The Movie Show that particular week. I saw the DVD on the shelf of my local video shop, while it was in the New Releases section. I saw the cover, loved the word-play in the title, and, thinking it was American, I told myself I would get it out when it gets moved to the weekly section.
I saw it, in the weekly section, some time later, and I read the blurb on the back and thought, `that sounds really interesting, I'll get it out someday'. Then last week, I picked it up again, and noticed the Australian Film Finance Corporation named on the back. I was in. I hired it, took it home, and loved every minute.
From the first scene, `The Rage in Placid Lake' sets itself up to be taken only semi-seriously. The parents of Placid Lake, our hero, are, as his name would suggest, extreme New Agers. We first meet Placid at primary school, where his mother drops him off in a dress, admonishing him to challenge the other children's pre-conceived notions of sexuality. Between flashbacks to his childhood, the film follows Placid's transition from school to work, which is fraught with stresses. Having failed to achieve happiness following his parents' advice, Placid takes a new tack: he gets his hair cut like George W. Bush, buys a suit, and lands a job with an insurance company. All of which is most distressing to his best friend Gemma, and his parents, who go to great lengths to shake him out of this Capitalist madness.
Writer and Director Tony McNamara has worked primarily in theatre, and has also written for television, including Southern Star's magnificent `The Secret Life of Us'. His background in the theatre, however, lends this film a very intimate and human touch. He had originally thought of this story as a play, but rightly judged it to be more suited to film, and made adjustments accordingly. The result is a film that stands out as something fresh, something that takes old ideas and stereotypes, and employs them to great effect.
While the characters in this film can be described as caricatures, Placid's journey into adulthood-his discovery of himself and of his relationships-resonates with such humanity that the suspension of disbelief is no effort. The pathos with which the characters are written boldly emphasises McNamara's assertion that we must be true to ourselves.
The most remarkable aspect of this film, however, remains the sad fact that so few people have seen it or even heard about it. It is an example of the magnificent films being produced in this country, and highlights the miserable plight of Australian filmmakers, overshadowed by the monstrous marketing ploys of their American counterparts. `The Rage in Placid Lake' may not quite be as noteworthy in the history of Australian film as `Jedda' or `Mad Max' or `Romper Stomper', but it makes a profound statement about humanity that sits somewhat uncomfortably in a world of Free Trade Agreements and `Wars on Terror'. What's more, it makes that statement beautifully.
charming, unique, funny.......2005-03-07
I love this movie.
The characters were real even though they were unusual. I cared about them, I loved them. They were well developed even though they were representitive arch types.
When the movie was over, I wished it weren't. To me it is a quirky work of genius, maybe even more so because of it's wonderful, gentle, directing, the perfect acting.
Product Description
As the world prepares for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver, a new documentary chronicles the inspiring story of the tiny town that gave America its greatest Olympic triumph. Lake Placid: An Olympic History traces the rise of Lake Placid, New York, from an unknown mountain village to the home of two Winter Olympics and the U.S. Hockey Team's Miracle on Ice. As the site of the nation's first winter resort at the turn of the century, Lake Placid boasted some of the nation's top winter athletes when it hosted the Third Winter Olympics in 1932. As the decades passed and the Games expanded, some felt the Olympics had grown too large for this tiny Adirondack village. But they underestimated the spirit of the townspeople. Lake Placid: An Olympic History chronicles how the town's 2,800 residents persevered through hardship and returned the Games to their small-town roots. The result, in 1980, was the Miracle on Ice, Eric Heiden's five gold medals, and America's most memorable Winter Olympic Games. Blending rare audio recordings with archival films and photographs, Lake Placid: An Olympic History is the story of America's Winter Sports Capital - where the spirit of the Olympics lives on, every day.

America's Winter Olympics Come Alive.......2006-02-01
Armchair Olympic fans will love this! Great vintage newsreel footage from America's first Winter Olympics perfectly woven together with film from America's greatest Winter Olympics. The best thing...they both took place in the same small Adirondack Village! The III Olympic Winter Games held in 1932 saw the USA win every speed skating event and both bobsleigh events, a record that has never been equaled. Great original film captures so much of the excitement of the day. However, the real story of America's original winter resort truly comes together with the XIII Olympic Winter Games held in Lake Placid in 1980. Reliving the "Miracle on Ice" USA hockey victory and Eric Heiden's 5 gold medal performace in speed skating is something you'll never forget. The footage of what went on behind the scenes to make each Olympic Games a success adds a realism that you don't find in many documentaries. A great production!

Customer Reviews:
Campy Humorous Horror.......2006-04-06
I'm a little embarrassed to say that I've seen this turkey three times from beginning to end. The problem is that this is the kind of movie that in 20 years will be lampooned by a show like "Mystery Science Theater 3000," which tells you that the movie is campy and often funny.
Our story opens at a lake in Maine, locally called Lake Placid, though that is not the name of the lake (that name was already taken, said one of the characters). We see a diver in the lake investigating a beaver lodge, with periodic fake clues that something might be in the water. Of course you know that we won't see the something until the director is ready, with the goal that you might jump at least a little. The diver of course ends up losing a lot of weight (about 40% would be my guess), and a lot of blood, which then ends his life. Our "something" in the water leaves behind a little clue (a tooth), and Bridget Fonda has to be called in to find the something (she's a paleontologist, you see).
Bridget Fonda is hilarious. She is all New York with the Maine locals, and the usual contrast between someone that hasn't the foggiest idea how to survive in the country with people who spend most of their time in it is great for laughs. Bridget also gets hit with a variety of animal parts (by accident), which is generally disgusting to anyone, but for an urbanite it must be truly awful.
Bill Pullman plays the local sheriff, whose concept of animal control involves really big guns (from Bridget's point of view, he's definitely a hick). Bill plays this role so naturally that you have to wonder whether he could end up being typecast. Bill does several things that aren't very smart, and eventually he and Bridget come to middle ground (really middle by the end of the movie).
Of course, the real star is the crocodile. I guess crocodiles weren't content to stay in New York City; they had to migrate further north. The movie explains this with hand waving about warm weather and the gulf stream and a convenient excuse to plot a crocodile into a Maine lake (it connects with the sea, you see). The crocodile makes a number of digital appearances, and several mechanical ones, and is often believable and just as often not. How the crocodile was dealt with near the end was reasonably original.
No one is going to confuse this movie with quality. It's apparent that wasn't the director's intent in any case. This movie is played for campy laughs, and as such, it does a pretty decent job. This movie is the kind of movie that you watch with your significant other, in the dark, and with a bowl of popcorn on the table. It's not so much that it's a great movie, but it's very entertaining and just too much fun. Silly me, I'll be watching it again.

Synopsis: Australian playwright Tony McNamara makes his directorial debut with the offbeat comedy The Rage in Placid Lake, adapted from his own play The Cafe Latte Kid. In his first feature film, indie rocker Benny Lee stars as a troubled teen named Placid Lake. The child of new-agey eccentric parents (Garry McDonald and Miranda Richardson), Placid spends his childhood getting picked on by bullies. Fortunately, he finds friendship with classmate Gemma Taylor (Rose Byrne), whose father (Nicholas Hammond) pressures her to excel in school. After Placid shocks the school with his dark student film, he gets into an accident that lands him in the hospital. Upon his recovery, he reinvents himself as an conservative insurance agent and engages in an affair of sorts with emotionally detached co-worker Jane (Saskia Smith). The Rage in Placid Lake was screened at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
