Brilliant Season.......2007-09-03
This season of Lost is, in my opinion, the best season yet! It contains some of the most brilliantly crafted and acted episodes of the series so far. The first six episodes pick up where Season 2 left off and tells the story of what happened to Kate, Sawyer and Jack while being held by The Others. They are all solid episodes but when Lost returned from it's hiatus in February, this show started to heat up like nothing you have ever seen. WOW!!! Some of the Season 3 episodes are likely to go down as some of the BEST television episodes OF ALL TIME! When Season 3 finally reaches it's conclusion with the MIND BLOWING FINALE, you can't help but be profoundly affected.
On a personal note: Desmond, I LOVE YOU! I will look for you until the END OF TIME! Do not give up hope.
Best show on TV.......2007-08-28
Another fantastic season of Lost! The best show on TV pretty much just keeps getting better. Although the third season arguably starts out a little weak, it really picks up in the second half (exactly like season 2 did...) and finishes with a bang.
So much is learned about the 'Others' in season 3, and Michael Emerson steals the show as Benjamin Linus, the best character on the show. Tons of mystery, surprises, action, drama, heartache, humour, etc. Pick this up as soon as you can... but watch first 2 seasons first.
If being LOST is wrong, I don't wanna be right........2007-08-28
Let me just start by saying i have never liked movies about being stranded on an island. Blue Lagoon, Castaway etc etc, i avoid those movies like the plague, why? Lets just say growing up in Chicago i have become used to urban enviroments and movies in general with a lot of stuff going on. How much can possibly go on when stranded on an island, fish? Swim away from sharks? Building a fire? Don't get me wrong, i like character development as much as the next person (never seen a lord of the flies movie but i read the book and did enjoy it, but thats the only stranded scenario i have ever gotten into) but i just couldnt buy the old grass huts and spear fishing cliche over and over again.
So what made me start watching Lost, i hate to say that into the third season i saw a commerical with Evangeline Lily in it and thought to myself, a show with a girl that fine in it has to be at least decent, if anything maybe i could catch some rainy scenes with her in it. So i downloaded the season premiere of season 3, a tale of 2 cities. When i saw the airplane going down after the others (didnt know at the time) came out of their houses i was just blowned away. For one, i thought it was just about a deserted island, instead i get people walking out a neigborhood that looks like surburbia in any ol city. So i thought to myself after watching the episode only one thing....."I have to get the first 2 seasons Now".
Now after being completely won over by the cast of lost for 2 seasons i jumped right back where i left off, the second episode of the 3rd season. Now i heard many reviews about how weak the first 6 episodes are. While it was nothing compared to the second half of the season, it was just basically giving a little insight into who the others really were. The whole dynamic between Jack and Julia is particularly fascinating, simply because Jack never truly falls for Julia like he has fallen for Kate, Julia however falls head over heels for Jack. The fact that they shared the most important bond (getting off the island) drew them closer together.
I enjoyed the episode when Ben shows jack the footage of the world series with Boston winning and the Look on Jack's face is probably the most stunning/revealing Look on the entire run of the show, You feel Jack's Pain that he can't get home but he realizes the world is still going on and it fuels him to do whatever is neccesary. The season picks up like a runaway train with the return of Lost that came on at 10:00pm est. Now, Lost is one of the only shows that can get away with coming on so late..10o'clock at night on the east coast, i am usually in bed by 9:30 and you want me to stay awake till 11:00pm. But you know what...i did it anyway, they could show this show at 3:00am and i would set my alarm clock to watch this outstanding show. Honestly, in my humble opinion their was not one weak episode in the whole season, even the episode "expose" which people seem to loathe for some reason i found enjoyable, sure not as much as others but the ending alone made a chill just go up my spine.
Lost is like crack to me, if i miss an episode i am downloading it the next day just so i can watch it, i am addicted and i will be addicted until my friends get off that darn island, and when they do, thats when i'll be in tears because this show that has brought me so much entertainment will finally be over.....thank goodness for dvd's.
The Best Run of Episodes LOST Has Ever Had...........2007-08-24
Even though the first 6 episodes of Season 3 are rather slow, it is more than made up for with the episodes that follow. Starting with "Not In Portland" (and ignoring "Stranger In A Strange Land") you will not find a better run of episodes in ANY Lost Season. Fantastic stand-outs such as "The Man From Tallahassee", "Par Avion", "Flashes Before Your Eyes", "The Man Behind the Curtain", and especially "The Brig" are just absurdly entertaining and gripping hours of television.
There was a lot of griping over this show in the beginning of Season 3, which unfortunately means a lot of people missed out on the absolutely stellar second half. Pick this up now if you are even remotely interested in the show, and if you are someone who stopped watching early on, I cannot even express how badly you need to see this season. 5 STARS.
Begins with a blast and ends with a whimper...that you'll never forget.......2007-08-15
Another masterful season of "Lost" has come to a crashing, and enigmatic end. For fans (like me) drawn to the show's thrills and riddles, Season 3 didn't disappoint. Like Season 2, you can't just get into the show, but "Lost" more than rewards those who can start from the beginning.
ARE YOU LOST: "Lost" follows the trauma-filled lives and back-stories of the survivors of Oceanic Ft. 815, which crashed on a mysterious island enroute from Sydney to LA. As time passed, and hopes for an immediate rescue dimmed, the survivors realized that they would have to come to terms with their new home, even as (we see in flashbacks) none have proved capable of coming to terms with their flawed lives. We met jack Shepard, a doctor obsessed with fixing whatever's broken, except for his own family. We also met Sawyer, the conman and heroic anti-hero. Kate is the woman between the two of them, a criminal on the run for murder. Locke (Terry O'Quinn) is a man with a long and complicated past - one that crippled him physically as well as emotionally, until he came to the Island, and found himself mysteriously bonded to it.
Then there are The Others. Hinted at until the end of the 1st season, we find by the end of Season 2 that the others inhabit an organized commune on the island. Their purpose and the bizarre strains of their society are slowly pealed away like an onion. At the climax, the Others blackmailed Michael into helping them kidnap Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley. (Hurley was released with orders to warn the rest of the survivors to keep away from their half of the island.) Who are the others, and what is their connection to the shadowy "Dharma Initiative"? And what about "Fake Henry Gale"? Revealing himself as Ben Linus doesn't quite begin to explain his knotty soul - Ben proves to be as trustworthy, a politician of sorts adept at using fear and hatred to manipulate others. (For politically minded viewers, the opening scene of Season 3 will raise disturbing parallels with 9/11, and its principal players.) But in the end, the Others are perfectly drawn because, like the Island, they have a perfectly maintained air of mystery.
In Season 3, Jack must confront the others, find out why he was singled out, and maneuver between them to get Sawyer and Kate to safety. New characters get the Lost treatment, with flashback episodes for Ben, Desmond (the crazy guy found by Locke in The Hatch) and Juliet, a doctor among the others used by Ben to manipulate Jack. We see Locke struggle through a crisis of faith over the island, while Hurley attempts to defeat "the numbers curse" (another great Hurley episode). Returned to the good graces of Claire, Charlie learns that he is marked for a grim fate. These and many other character plot twists abound in Season 3, as "Lost" shows that it's lost none of its momentum. The inertia continues right up to the end of the season finale, which has all the thrills and mystery of the rest of the season and something that the other shows don't - a flash-forward.

Arguably the series' best season to date, season 5 of 24 literally starts with a bang and never lets up, with an intricate executive-level conspiracy to control Central Asia's oil supply. Piling crisis upon crisis in an escalating series of deceptions, twists, and deeply hidden agendas, the day-long ordeal begins with a devastating political assassination connected to a disgraced former CTU agent (Peter Weller) and a radical group of Russian separatists (led by British actor Julian Sands) threatening to release lethal nerve gas in Los Angeles to protest a U.S./Russian treaty about to be signed by President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin). As Logan's unstable wife Martha (Jean Smart), Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce (Glenn Morshower), and chief of staff Mike Novick (Jude Ciccolella) gradually uncover the conspiracy, CTU maverick Jack Bauer (series star Kiefer Sutherland) emerges from self-imposed exile to aid his CTU colleagues in a life-threatening quest for the truth. Meanwhile, CTU chief Bill Buchanan (James Morrison) is thwarted by an inexperienced, overbearing superior (Sean Astin) and an executive takeover of CTU led by Homeland Security chief Karen Hayes (Jayne Atkinson), forcing Bauer and his CTU loyalists to "go dark" and work independently to honor the memory of a slain friend and leader. Also figuring in are CTU's resident hacker-nerd extraordinaire, Chloe O'Brian (played to perfection by Mary Lynn Rajskub)
, Bauer's estranged daughter (Elisha Cuthbert), and his beloved CTU colleague Audrey Raines (Kim Raver).
Pivoting on a declaration of martial law and a mysterious cabal of unnamed conspirators, "Day 5" shocked even loyal 24 fans with a high body count including several important supporting characters. It all adds up to an exceptional season that earned Sutherland a well-deserved Emmy (for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series), equally deserving Emmy nominations for Itzin and Sharp, and an Emmy win for co-executive producer Jon Cassar's direction of the riveting season premiere. And while the breathtaking twists of 24 don't always hold up to intense scrutiny, these 24 episodes (running about 43 minutes each) are tightly written and flawlessly directed with an involving emphasis on thriller plotting and dramatic focus on the complex and operatically tragic relationship between President Logan and his traumatized wife. Add it all up, and you've got an addictive reason to look forward to season 6. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVDs
Discs 1-6 contain four episodes each, with several episodes including optional viewing of extended or alternate takes of selected scenes. A total of 12 full-length episode commentaries are provided by 24's primary cast and crew, allowing listeners a comprehensive appreciation of the series' extended "family" of talent, along with a wealth of production anecdotes, revealing observations about plotting and character, and a welcome overview of individual personalities and contributions. Disc 7 is packed with features, beginning with a season 6 prequel that offers a tantalizing glimpse of things to come, with an interrogation and escape scenario set seven months after the events of "Day 5"; by comparison, the season 6 trailer offers little more than a recap of season 5. The featurettes are all well-crafted and worth a look, beginning with a "Supporting Players" profile of 24's extended cast (including some surprising glimpses of their off-screen hobbies and activities); a detailed documentary about 24's innovative and hard-working camera crew; a profile of music composer Sean Callery, who demonstrates his versatile mood-setting techniques; a detailed exploration of the "Presidential Retreat" set with production designer Jonathan Hodges and colleagues; a "100th Episode Reel" with tightly-edited clips from seasons 1-5; and a sampling of cast and crew photos from 24: Behind the Scenes, a picture book published in November 2006. Kudos to Sparkhill Productions for continuing to provide 24 bonus features as well-made as the series itself. --Jeff Shannon

Description
Eighteen months after faking his own death, Jack Bauer is forced to return to Los Angeles when it becomes apparent that the only four people who know he is still alive are being systemically targeted for assassination. The assassinations coincide with the signing of an anti-terrorism treaty between Russia and the U.S., leading Jack to suspect a link between the assassinations, the treaty, and a group of Russian terrorists. But as events slowly unfold it becomes apparent that the day's horrific events were originally set in motion by someone within our country's own administration - an individual with the power and resources to thwart Jack's every move.

24 gets dumber seasons 5 and 6.......2007-08-20
Seasons (Days) 1 - 4 were great...5 and 6 are lousy...and 6 became difficult to stay awake while viewing one unrealistic plot after another unfold.
Loved it.............2007-07-21
What can I say? Best 24 season ever. Heart stopping when you find out who the real enemy is. Liked Season 6, but not up to usual standards.
Everybody Dies.......2007-07-18
What a way to start the show. Kill the "Progressive" president. Kill Michelle. Nice. Then later that fool Edgar dies. So long Mr. Potato Head! Then Tony is permanently taken out of play. Bye Bye Moe. I liked most of those guys, but all of them were pretty much out of the show anyway (except Potato Head). I am still waiting for Kim to die. They must be saving that one for when the plot line or the show's popularity wains.
Suspention of disbelief is really the key to enjoying this series. That made me upset in the begining, but by the fifth season, I have allowed the fantasy to wash over me. In fact the less you think and try to figure the show out, the more you will enjoy it. Perhaps my review of season 3 sould have been higher if I had this mind set then.
As much as I love the black president, I love this Nixon clone better. The writers seem to depend on Jack having to work against a jerk boss at some level or another, and making the jerk the president was a welcome change from the previous boy scout. I'm glad they didn't show more than they did during his sex scene. I was worried. It did seem to be over in just a few minutes.
This series has improved during this season. Again because Kim is gone, though she does return during a gas attack. I was hoping she would choke to death, but no luck. She didn't bring her one handed boyfriend but some older dude that Jack tried to take on.
Jack is still Jack. By that I mean that he doesn't seem to be able to do anything wrong on any level. While his actions might result in the deaths of many many people, somehow it is always the right thing to do, and the show moves on.
I liked the part where he resisted NERVE gas by holding his breath. Something that potent would have penetrated his skin VERY quickly. I hope that before the series is cancelled, that it is revealed that Jack is actually Superman or one of his direct desendants. Nothing else would explain his "Eagle Powers."
I must mention the choice to include Sean Astin (aka Rudy, aka Samwise Gamgee, aka a goonie) as one of Jack's boss. He did a good job being a jerk, but I couldn't help wanting him to call somebody "Mr. Frodo." It was satisfying seeing him get his butt kicked, then die from the gas. However characters like him should be allowed to say lines they made popular in other movies. He could have worked in the line "I aint droppin' no eaves!," or something to do with One Eyed Willie.
The new token black guy they have is good. You know he is not going to die as long as there is not another main black character. As soon as they get one, he better watch out.
Finally, a comment on the ending. Unless you were thinking, which ruins this series, the Chinese capturing Jack is a big suprise. I love it. However the Heathen Chinee don't know that ol' Jack may be wounded, tired, and chained; but give him two episodes/hours to heal and he'll be tip top.
4 stars if you don't use your mind while watching this show.
2 stars if you do.
Go JACK!.......2007-07-08
Season Five was the winner! Of course, Kiefer and the regular cast absolutely rock, it was fantastic to see as much of Agent Pierce as we did this season, and Gregory Itzen and Jean Smart...... well, what can I say about them other than === shoulda won the Emmys!!!
It becomes steadily sillier..........2007-06-28
I caught some episodes on TV. When I saw Jack going into an atmosphere of NERVE GAS (which acts on skin and therefore needs full suit protection) merely holding his breath, I lost interest. It still seems as cliff-hangerish as always, but I find that, in spite of this and the appealing characters (big Chloe fan!), I can't overlook the silliness.

The weirdness of actor Nicolas Cage and the weirdness of science-fiction author Philip K. Dick seem like a natural fit. The premise, taken from a short story by Dick, is a good one: A mediocre Las Vegas magician named Chris Johnson (Cage) can see into the future--but only about two minutes at the most. Just enough to pull off his act and to make some money at the gambling tables, so long as he's discreet. Unfortunately, he hasn't been discreet enough; a government agent (Julianne Moore) has sussed out his precognitive talent and wants to use him to track down terrorists. But all Johnson cares about is a beautiful young woman (Jessica Biel, The Illusionist) that he can see in his future--much further in his future than he's ever seen before. Next has flashes that point to a much, much better movie than it turned out to be. A sequence in which Johnson, clairvoyantly explores all the different permutations of how he might approach his mystery woman is both funny and thought-provoking, and when Johnson avoids pursuers by knowing just the right moment to turn a corner or duck his head, it's smart and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the terrorist part of the plot is utterly perfunctory and precognition is reduced to an action movie gimmick. Somewhere in there is the kernel of a romantic comedy about precognition that's just waiting to be made. Cage gives a solid if unsurprising performance, Moore is basically earning a paycheck, but Biel is unexpectedly good (and her part is considerably better-written than your usual romantic interest); her performance suggests a better future than anyone might have predicted. --Bret Fetzer

Enjoyable and leave you hanging at the end.......2007-08-30
I have to agreed with earlier reviewers that you need to pay attentions to the dialogues because they are very subtle and witty. The nuclear bomb threat is kind of lame but I thought the film is very funny and enjoyable with all the witty alternative scenarios and pick-up lines. The movie is not about saving the world but more about a person sacrificing himself and protecting the woman he loves.
The ending leaves me hanging in the air which may not be a bad thing because as Chris(Cage) said in the movie "once you look into the future, you change it and it is no longer the same."
However, people at the theater seem to hate it and it didn't do well at the box office. Maybe, viewers were expecting action-thriller but instead they got a romantic comedy/drama. It just didn't fill their expectation.
Good movie, worth watching.......2007-08-16
The first thing I have to say about this movie, is bravo to director Lee Tamahori for bringing to life a different idea for a change. While there have been a hundred movies about time travel, or precognition, this particular rendition is unique, and very refreshing.
Nicholas Cage now has a very large body of work in his ever growing resume' of movies, and unfortunately, they have been a mixed bag of nuts at best. I would say that only about 60% of the movies he is in are truly worth watching, but that 60% are very good movies spanning serious roles, comedic, bad guy, good guy, weird guy, ghost, and everything else in-between!
Nicholas is one of those actors that some how just him acting the same way, or just being himself in each movie just works. There are very few actors that can get away with this, and end up with the long careers that Nicholas has had. He has this way about him that is unique, and can just be used over and over and never seems to get old.
"Next" is a fun, and fast paced movie about a night club magician in Las Vegas who has an unusual act of guessing "What will happen next." The only difference with Nicholas's character, Chris Johnson, a.k.a Frank Cadillac, is that his act, is NOT an act. He actually has a real gift. Chris can see into the future a very short amount of time, but enough to where he can effect what happens to him, and his surroundings.
The trouble all starts when an F.B.I. agent Callie Ferris (played by Julianne Moore) finds out about Chris's ability, and talks her superiors into letting her acquire his aid (whether he likes it or not) in trying to thwart a terrorist bomb attack on U.S. soil.
Chris is able to escape the F.B.I.'s attempts to capture him several times with his love interest Liz Cooper (played by Jessica Biel) in tow by simply looking into the future in just enough time to see what their plans are, and precisely at the right moment slip through their fingers.
Eventually the F.B.I. does catch up with him, but not before pulling an amazing split second rescue of the main F.B.I. agent Callie. There is no real way to describe in words how Chris pulls these stunts off, but the people in charge of the C.G.I. do a fantastic job. One particular scene that is really mind bending, is towards the end of the movie when Chris, Liz, Callie, and a team of F.B.I. agents are stumbling through a warehouse trying to locate this bomb planted by the terrorist group, and the camera shows Chris splitting himself up in the future a hundred different ways searching through the warehouse trying to avoid booby trap type bombs set to blow up if someone walks past them.
This is about as far as I can take you with regards to the plot without playing the spoiler, so I will end on this note. Director Lee Tamahori, does manage to pull of a very good over all "look" and "feel" to the movie, and overall the movie was very entertaining. I think if they were to kick things up a notch, they could easily pull off a sequel that would overshadow the first.
My rating for this movie is 7.50 out of 10.00
[..]
Very strong overall........2007-08-12
While I've never read the Philip Dick story this movie is based on, I'll have to say this story has some strong points on its own. Nicolas Cage is great as "Frank Cadillac" or Chris, as he prefers to be called. He can see two minutes into his own future, and this opens some interesting possibilities. It's funny to see him run through several different pick up scenarios before finally finding one that will work with Jessica Biel. This ability also saves his life several times.
The storyline moves along at a good pace. While there are some boring scenes, there are enough "Wow!" moments to keep you hooked until the end.
Ah, the end...there's our problem. In an attempt to pull out a great plot twist, we end up with a very cheated feeling. It's almost as if we don't get to see how it all ultimately works out. This could have been fixed with about 5 minutes more screen time, but we don't get it. I'm pretty sure the DVD will probably have an alternate ending in there somewhere because I can't believe this is how they originally envisioned it.
As a whole, this was a good movie and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, and seemed to stumble under the weight of its plot a couple of times (who were the terrorists? where did they get the bomb? Why would a woman like Jessica Biel agree to drive a man she'd just met across the desert...especially when the guy looked like a psycho?), but it was worth the time it takes to watch it.
Garbage...........2007-08-07
What happens when you cast a wooden actor like Nick Cage, an airhead like Biel, and come up with some sort of time travel story that looks like the 13th rip-off of Back To The Future, well you have this piece of celliod trash.
Juliane Moore deserves better scripts sent her way then this trash.
Good but nothing spectacular.......2007-08-07
The movie began interestingly enough and I found myself hooked as Nic Cage's character introduced himself, his power to see into a few minutes (or was that seconds?) into the future, and how he used it in his everyday life as a magician. But I began to lose interest as the story progressed and the feds begin to try and capture him to use his powers to stop a terrorist threat.
It wasn't helped any by the bad low budget CGI which clearly looked very fake. I think the movie would have been more interesting if it had concentrated on the love story between Cage and Biel without bringing in the terrorist threat or maybe some other conflict.
There were some cool moments when Cage's character uses his powers to check out alternate futures, like the scene where he tries to woo Biel's character and the bomb finding scene. Nevertheless I was very disappointed at the ending. A very cliché ending, and would no doubt will get a few groans from the audience. Still, it was interesting...

Along with Desperate Housewives, Lost was one of the two breakout shows in the fall of 2004. Mixing suspense and action with a sci-fi twist, it began with a thrilling pilot episode in which a jetliner traveling from Australia to Los Angeles crashes, leaving 48 survivors on an unidentified island with no sign of civilization or hope of imminent rescue. That may sound like Gilligan's Island meets Survivor, but Lost kept viewers tuning in every Wednesday night--and spending the rest of the week speculating on Web sites--with some irresistible hooks (not to mention the beautiful women). First, there's a huge ensemble cast of no fewer than 14 regular characters, and each episode fills in some of the back story on one of them. There's a doctor; an Iraqi soldier; a has-been rock star; a fugitive from justice; a self-absorbed young woman and her brother; a lottery winner; a father and son; a Korean couple; a pregnant woman; and others. Second, there's a host of unanswered questions: What is the mysterious beast that lurks in the jungle? Why do polar bears and wild boars live there? Why has a woman been transmitting an SOS message in French from somewhere on the island for the last 16 years? Why do impossible wishes seem to come true? Are they really on a physical island, or somewhere else? What is the significance of the recurring set of numbers? And will Kate ever give up her bad-boy fixation and hook up with Jack?
Lost did have some hiccups during the first season. Some plot threads were left dangling for weeks, and the "oh, it didn't really happen" card was played too often. But the strong writing and topnotch cast kept the show a cut above most network TV. The best-known actor at the time of the show's debut was Dominic Monaghan, fresh off his stint as Merry the Hobbit in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The rest of the cast is either unknowns or "where I have I seen that face before" supporting players, including Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly, who are the closest thing to leads. Other standouts include Naveen Andrews, Terry O'Quinn (who's made a nice career out of conspiracy-themed TV shows), Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Yunjin Kim, Maggie Grace, and Emilie de Ravin, but there's really not a weak link in the cast. Co-created by J.J. Abrams (Alias), Lost left enough unanswered questions after its first season to keep viewers riveted for a second season. --David Horiuchi

DVD features
Even if you saw every episode of Lost on TV--or perhaps especially if you saw every episode--the DVD set is a must-own. The episodes are presented in widescreen format, just as they were broadcast on high-definition channels. (Conventional ABC-TV broadcasts were reduced to 1.33 full-screen format.) Four of the episodes have commentary tracks by the producing team and the actors who were featured on certain episodes (Terry O'Quinn, Dominic Monaghan, and Maggie Grace and Ian Sommerhalder). The last disc has over three hours of bonus material sensibly broken into three categories. "Departure" discusses the initial creation of the series, the making of the pilot, and the cast (some characters were created to fit the actors, and Evangeline Lilly's Kate was the hardest to cast). It also includes the cast's audition tapes and photographs by Matthew Fox. "Tales from the Island" provides background material on seven of the episodes plus the boars used in filming, Jimmy Kimmel's appearance on the set, and the genesis of the Driveshaft song ("You all everybody..."). Finally, "Lost Revealed" includes two scenes cut from the season finale, 13 other deleted scenes (not identified by episode, unfortunately), a blooper reel, and the cast and crew's giddy appearance at the Museum of Television & Radio. --David Horiuchi

Pretty. . .Pretty. . .Pretty Average.......2007-09-03
Over the past three years "Lost" has gone from winning best TV drama at the Emmys (for this season) to simply being known for sliding ratings and their outspoken, whiny fans. Of course ABC and the makers of this show have brought a lot of that on themselves with storylines that provide far more questions than answers and a scheduling system that would have killed most weaker shows. Though after we work our way through all that nonsense we find a show that is fine but ultimately overrated. Maybe people love this show as though it was the perfect specimen that they wish it was. After busting down the gates with two strong episodes to open the series which lay out for us strong characters and strong groundwork the show loses its new show luster very quickly. I'm sure JJ Abrams and company would have you believe that this show is far more cinematic than episodic but I'm not so easily convinced. Too many episodes fall into the trap of being mysteries that need to be solved in 43 minutes. Who burned down the raft? Who poisoned Michael? What is this, freakin' "Murder She Wrote"?
The story, for those that don't know, involves a bunch of people who get on a plane which goes down in the middle of nowhere, stranding them on an island that is apparently on nobodies map. Then weird stuff starts to happen. A polar bear shows up. They find some crazy French chick with a taste for torture. Jack (Matthew Fox, strong in this role) takes over as natural leader of the pack. They try to play it up as though he needs to be a leader to get over his daddy issues but I wasn't really buying that. More realistically the good suits at ABC probably picked him out to be the leader because they wanted a clean cut, attractive white male to get top billing. There are a lot of characters here and by painting them fairly broadly (the Iraqi, the hot girl, the fat guy) they are able to produce legitimately strong people. We learn about them slowly over the season through flashbacks to their previous lives. These flashbacks were widely criticized as simply slowing down the plot, but let's look at this situation from a different angle. This is a huge season (large even by network TV drama standards) at 1068 minutes, could they really fill all that out, and 5 seasons afterwards, with just island life? Especially considering how tame this island life is (no raping!). The story moves towards two climaxes. One involves a set of characters who build a raft and set sail for freedom into the wild blue yonder. The other revolves around a mysterious hatch found buried deep in the jungle and what exactly it contains.
Along the way the plots vary in quality. Claire getting kidnapped provides a perfect mini arch right in the middle of the season. I also enjoyed most anything Sawyer was involved in because even though I generally hate Texas racists he was at least pragmatic compared to the rest of the day dreamers. Too often I found the flashbacks to be too closely related to what was happening in real time. Their poetic coincidence was my network TV contrivance. Also, as could be expected, the plane roster was unusually attractive and unusually interesting. Where are the lazy bums like me who would watch a show like this? So in conclusion this show is certainly not my favorite, it is an ambitious, original concept that still needs to work out the kinks.
My Favorite Show Ever.......2007-08-31
My husband introduced me to Lost a few months ago. Never before have I enjoyed a program as much as I do the Lost series. It has everything a viewer could desire....action, mystery, complex plots, and surprising outcomes. This show is best viewed on DVD so you can watch the episodes back to back to maintain momentum, rather than on TV with the week to week wait for answers to last episodes mysteries.
I wish there were more shows created with this style of writing and creative plot building. It captures your imagination and keeps you on the edge of your seat during each episode. We need more Lost-like programs.
Very entertaining. I want to live on the Lost island.
Super Fun Awesome Go Happy Show.......2007-08-31
I personally think TV series are way better than what the Big Movies are pumping out these days. And then this show is definitely one of the best out there. It's interesting, mysterious, creepy, and you don't want it to stop. BUY IT
Im Lost!!!!!!.......2007-08-24
What to say about this first season after seeing the second and third season just recently may affect this review. However I will abstain from involving the other 2. Lost season 1 opens with a magnificent scene of a plane crash which Im sure has been apart of many a persons dream (i.e. crashing on a beutiful tropical Island - with aparently no inhabitants!!) Lost gets increasingly complicated and has you guessing what is going on from the beginning. A Polar bear, A monster that uproots trees and kills people!! It is edge of the seat stuff. However as the stories twist and turn my interest has decreased significantly. I know many whom have lost interest altogether. Unfortunately I am one of those people who want to see it through to the end. I will be buying all boxsets!!! However I believe the remaining boxsets may not get the 5star rating that Iv given this one, however season one deserves this for inspiring & amazing so many people on its introduction to TV.
Not Lost On Me.......2007-08-19
Television takes its knocks for coming out with low-end entertainment, but the first season of Lost breathes some life into our living rooms. I found this suitable for watching with my own children aged 10 and above, yet compelling enough to hold my own interest throughout. Not sure how subsequent seasons will hold up (hey, there's only so much you can do with the castaway theme), but this first set of discs was worth the price.

Oh boy. Here we go again! Just another exciting day in the life of 24 super-agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). The season kicks off with a deadly terrorist strike resulting in the kidnapping of his new boss, the U.S. Secretary of Defense James Heller (William Devane). Although a fired, ex-employee of the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU), it is no surprise who is going to shift into full gear to bring the terrorists to justice. However, it doesn't take the super-agent long to discover the kidnapping of his boss is part of a much larger plan, master-minded by Habib Marvan (Arnold Vosloh) the middle eastern terrorist cell leader the US government has been trying to track down for years. Considered by many to be the best season of the first four, 24 - Season 4 is a definite departure from the first three seasons. First, the cast is almost entirely new. Second, the pacing of each episode does not seem as frantic. There appears to be a shift from the reliance on plot-shifting cliff hangers (which in some ways dragged down the quality of Season 3), to a focus on complex, over-arcing, multiple storylines, albeit very violent. What may be missing in superficial action clichés is definitely compensated for in a richer plot. That's not to say the show has slowed down; it's still amped up beyond anything else on TV, but compared to the previous seasons, 24 has gotten a lot smarter, and in turn, better. --Rob Bracco

Customer Reviews:
Another excellent DVD of 24.......2007-09-07
I was reading the previous comments on it, and somehow prepared for a poor performance of this season.
However, I was very glad to watch all the DVDs, and finally I was not dissapointed at all.
Maybe if you know alredy the "recipe", you will see very few surprises...but nobody can really tell you that it's boring or with slow action. Perhaps phrases and key words are not so distinguihed as the other seasons. Highly recommended if you are a 24 fan.
Gets better and better.......2007-08-29
SPOILERS AHEAD: I thought this season started out very lamely with some implausible situations and uninteresting characters (Erin Driscoll and her daughter being the most annoying characters in the history of the show and Secretary Heller being the dumbest; William Devane was hilariously stupid--I laughed my head off everytime he spewed one useless comment after another), but it got so good that by the end I was virtually on the edge of my seat. Things started to look better when Tony Almeida suddenly showed up and the show went into high gear and got even better when Michelle Dessler (those two have great chemistry together; you could feel their love), Mike Novak and President Palmer turned up. My favorite scenes in the season were when Jack held up the gas station store, Mrs. Araz poisoned Debbie, when that couple camping in the desert came across the "football", when Jack forces the doctors to save a witness' life and let Paul Raines die, and that absolutely riveting scene where that first deadly female assassin impersonates an FBI agent. Also, I don't watch much TV, but this is the first time I ever heard Chinese nationals speaking official Mandarin Chinese rather than Cantonese. I thought that was so cool, and also that they didn't use any of those stock Asian American actors you usually always see on other shows and movies. My only disappointment with this season is that there was no scandalous side story to make things interesting; bring back Sherry Palmer!
Can too much happen in one day?.......2007-08-28
Even though it's one of the more popular shows on TV, I kind of stopped watching 24 around the start of season 3. After missing a couple of nights and being impatient about episode reruns, I kind of grew out of the show, watching the occasional episode. Being bored and hearing great things about season 4, on a complete whim I decided to buy the season and sure enough I got my money's worth. While it does have some non-nagging issues, it's compelling TV anyways.
Fired from CTU, Jack Bauer is now the advisor for the Secretary of Defense, James Heller while in a long relationship with Heller's daughter, Audrey. But he gets called into action when a train derails and Heller and Audrey are abducted by a terrorist faction. He quickly gets pulled back into CTU in trying to find the perpetrators and finds that the terrorist's leader has a lot more planned than a kidnapping.
Despite the fact it's one of the more compelling shows on TV, it's also one of the more difficult to revisit. On first viewing, you are hooked, period watching most likely several episodes or in my case, several discs at once. However since you already know how cliffhangers and plot threads will play out, you're more watching it for fun rather than an urge to find out what happens next. Not to mention because it's a season-long story and not mini-stories a la CSI or Law and Order, it makes the show difficult for specific episode watching. You might go "man that one part with that firefight, that was cool!" but you'd go "wait, what episode was that on anyway"? But then again you're so completely enthralled you probably wouldn't care after awhile.
The show also requires massive suspension of disbelief as you're almost quite sure not this much can happen in this time, let alone this quickly. Leads immediately connect to each other in record time and then of course there's a larger plot than just a kidnapping which makes you wonder if the season's main villain is just super intelligent or really lucky. But you knew that about 24 already right? As long as it'll be good TV, it'll work and luckily for us, they find ways to make it work.
I'm not sure if it's the best season since I haven't really watched most of them but despite its questionable rewatch value and the incredulous events, no show can hook many a viewer than 24.

The lurid scenario--a nymphomaniacal white trash nymphet (Christina Ricci) is held prisoner by a bitter bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson)--gives way to an affecting tale of redemption in Black Snake Moan, writer/director Craig Brewer's follow-up to the acclaimed Hustle & Flow. Lazarus (Jackson, Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction) finds Rae (Ricci, Monster, The Ice Storm) beaten unconscious on the road in front of his backwoods house. After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion. Black Snake Moan could have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones--several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly good performance as Rae's boyfriend) treat the characters with respect, honesty, and humor. The result is off-kilter and maybe a little too fond of its sleazy cinematic forbears to truly hit the emotional notes it's after, but Black Snake Moan has considerably more substance than its marketing would suggest. --Bret Fetzer

The Odd Couple.......2007-09-13
Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci are two of my favorite screen actors. They're both quirky iconoclasts who occasionally make studio films, but always seem to really shine in offbeat, smaller pictures. The relationship between their two characters, Lazarus and Rae, is the heart and focus of this film. Both characters have been wounded by sex in ways that strangely complement one another: Lazarus has been betrayed by his cold, promiscuous wife, and Rae's history of sexual abuse has brought about her character's uncontrollable sexual compulsion.
Lazarus and Rae meet when Rae is beaten and left unconscious by the side of the road after humiliating one of the many suitors who take advantage of her compulsive promiscuity. Lazarus nurses her back to health, and then feels a self-righteous desire to "cure" her of her "illness", however, it is clear that he is trying to save himself somehow as much as he is trying to save her.
As much as Ricci and Jackson carry the film, a lot of credit is also owed to the soundtrack. The blues music wonderfully complements the emotions and circumstances of the two tormented characters. The songs speaks of sex, betrayal, sadness and redemption; the perfect musical complement to the themes of the film.
Different.......2007-09-07
Jackson was very good, as usual, but the plot was pretty contrived. I found I was paying more attention to the sound track (which is outstanding) than the story line.
Simmering Deep South Style.......2007-09-04
Once you get over the initial seemingly ridiculous plotline of this film there is a lot of enjoyment to be had. Christina Ricci plays an incredibly brave role as a nymphomaniac who is left for dead on the side of the road after one two many sexual trists. Samuel L Jackson plays the damaged but moral rescuer who chains her to the radiator in his house and attempts to cure her wicked ways. There is some great tunes in this film with ol Samuel belting out some of his own along the way which i must admit is pretty darn good. Justin Timberlake again impresses as the anxiety ridden and troubled boyfriend of Ricci's character whose actions will have consequences for everybody. As silly as it sounds this film is well written and terrifically performed and has a very moral and decent undercurrent flowing throughout and has a lot to say about the healing power of love and care and redemption. Recommended for those who are after something a bit different and not just an excuse to watch Christina Ricci wonder around half naked for most of the film.
Lazarus comes forth.......2007-09-03
For a movie packed with graphic imagery, infused with heart-thumping blues music, and then generously splattered with raw emotion, the plot of Black Snake Moan is remarkably simple.
Samuel L. Jackson plays Lazarus, a Tennessee farmer and former blues guitarist whose wife takes off with his brother for some good times. Naturally he doesn't take the news very well, but before he can even come to grips with his loss, he finds a badly beaten young girl (Christina Ricci, who seems to thrive on challenging roles) dumped on the roadway near his house. Strange as it may seem, being beaten and left for dead are just two of Rae's problems, as her boyfriend Ronnie (Justin Timberlake) has just left to join the National Guard, leaving her out of sync and all alone with her regular attacks of nymphomania.
Lazarus knows that calling the sheriff could result in some unpleasant interrogation based purely on skin color, so being a religious man, he does the Good Samaritan thing and does his best to help Rae, both physically and mentally. The thing is, when Rae gets her attacks, she's inclined to go running wildly away from the house, and so Lazarus decides to restrain her with chains, which actually sounds a lot kinkier than it actually is. Obviously this is not an ideal situation, and it gets worse when Ronnie returns home unexpectedly.
Extremely well acted by both leads, with more than acceptable Blues renditions by Jackson, and even the deer-in-the-headlights performance by Timberlake wasn't that bad, given the character he plays. Not recommended for below 17 yrs, due to violence, profanity, graphic scenes and the fact that Timberlake leaves the singing to Jackson.
Amanda Richards, September 3, 2007
Black Snake Moan.......2007-09-02
I'm a big fan of Christina Ricci and Samuel L Jackson, so despite or because of the soft porn material I found this movie very entertaining. Both stars do not disappoint in their roles and Justin Timberlake gives a believable performance as a wacky boyfriend. Since the "Blues" and hard luck love, sex in this case, seem to go hand in hand the mixture in this film seems like a good fit. Samuel L's guitar playing is a big suprise and overall the music is great.

This epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning writer of Gulliver's Travels was a ratings bust on television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the Fairy Tale Zone; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince--Wendell, grandson of Snow White--changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell's throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia. The 10th Kingdom is a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, magic to behold here. But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors, and trolls, this is not kid's stuff. It can get scary, surprisingly violent, and quite intense; you know, just like real fairy tales. --Donald Liebenson

Great movie.......2007-08-23
This is a great movie, I received it promptly and in perfect condition, I recommed this to anyone.
The most beautiful mini-series .......2007-08-11
This is the most beautiful mini-series you're liable to see. A modern woman from contemporary New York City still living with her father ends up on an adventure beyond her imagining when a gateway between her world and the strange and surreal world of the 9 kingdoms is opened. The 9 kingdoms is an alternate reality where the fairy tales are strangely true and wolves (werewolves actually) do seduce young women, princes are put under wicked spells and dark, deep secrets are hidden behind the villainous wicked queen. (I won't spoil it for you.)
One character I love in particular in this is the neurotic Wolf. Wolf is a half-wolf (werewolf) and apparently a descendant of The Big Bad Wolf. Wolf becomes the love interest in the story.
There are some amazing acting talents in this mini-series including Diane Weist in her very first villain role. It's shocking to see her out of the sugary sweet motherly role we're used to such as her role as Peg in Edward Scissorhands and the mother role in Lost Boys.
Another thing I like is the beautiful yet full figured woman who played Snow White- the actress from the practice. The writers paid close attention to detail in remembering that the original Snow White story's protagonist was fair and plump and they didn't follow the modern trend of the sickly-thin conception of beauty.
The fairy tales return to their roots with this mature- yet decent enough for people of all ages- fantasy. It's simply beautiful.

What I can't believe is how intricate this whole story is. I really shows a lot of different story lines, characters and twists and turns along the way. It is inventive and enjoyable. I have watched bits and pieces since the first time I watched the entire thing at once. Everytime I watch, I see something I didn't see before.
Scott Cohen as "Wolf" is totally amazing. He is the perfect lead male in a twisted fairytale. He is charming, sexy, daring, and yet flawed in a number of ways. John Larroquette is great as "Tony" and he has the comic timing down pat. Kimberly Williams holds it all together while being brave and vulnerable all at once.
My kids are 10 & 7 and they love it. My Mom is in her 60's and she loves it so it appeals to many age groups.
If you can't handle fantasy, don't watch. If you are sick of the same old formulas, then give it a try for something new.
Comes the Kingdom!.......2007-08-05
This is a delight for anyone who enjoys fantasy and folk lore. In a modern age it is so delightful to find the old stories coming to life!
Addictive Movie.......2007-08-01
This is a very addicting movie! You just can't stop watching. My Aunt had this movie when we went to visit her and we promptly came home and ordered it, my Aunt then watched with me and I had to order it for her too, and she is a teacher. She brought this to class for thier "free Friday's" and now her class has seen it several times. This is a light hearted fantasy type movie. I reccomend it for all ages!

Usual suspects.......2007-09-03
This DVD is a good quality DVD version containing several different shows on one disk. My daughter (3yrs old) loves it, and we take it with us on road trips. It is of course some of the same shows that are on TV, so your child may have already seen them, however this doesn't seem to be a bad thing from my child's point of view. She prefers to watch this DVD over, and over, and..
The Backyardigans are a group of five children who all live near each other, and all get together to play in their backyards. They join up, play in their imaginations, and then have a snack at one of their houses. If your child like singing, music, dancing, fantastic imaginative play, they will certainly enjoy this. I would recommend it for kids over 2, probably in the 3-5yr old range, as the kids talk faster than other shows (like Dora), and the words are less enunciated, so some children may have trouble understanding what the kids say.
All in all, I find myself watching this with my daughter, and enjoying it.
Backyardigan and again and again.......2007-08-27
This was delivered right on the release date! My son was so happy! Great product and great shipping. Thanks!
My son loves the Backyardigans.......2007-08-23
My 2 1/2 year old son loves the backyardigans and there is not one episode that he can't watch. He likes the idea of the mermaids and the submarine under water. We pretty much own all the dvds and they help me to get things done.
The Backyardigans are Back!.......2007-08-21
We love The Backyardigans in our house and can watch it over and over again. We were pretty disappointed in Movers and Shakers, but with Into the Deep, the Backyardigans are back in excellent form! All 4 episodes are fun, with catchy tunes that moms and dads will find themselves humming. Each episode ends well - no funny, abrupt endings - and my son loves the fact that one of the snacks is sushi!
Our personal top 3 Backyardigans DVDs are now:
Into the Deep
Legend of the Volcano Sisters
Surf's Up
This is a must for any fan!
A Backyardigans medley.......2007-08-19
The Backyardigans series is one of the few children's shows that can be watched over and over again without causing involuntary twitches, nervous breakdowns or constant eye rolling on the part of adults. The five characters are extremely likeable, the episodes highly imaginative, and the selection of a different genre of music for each episode is a stroke of creative genius.
Two of the episodes on this DVD qualify for special praise in the musical department, and these are "Into the Deep" which uses Bollywood melodies, and "Catch That Butterfly" which is pure operatic brilliance. "Save the Day" is psychedelic soul and "Newsflash" is inspired by Motown music.
A summary of the four episodes on this DVD is below:
"Into the Deep" (summarized to the tune "Octopus's Garden")
Here you will see, under the sea
Tasha and Uniqua's garden in the shade
But don't go in, they'll cause a din
A little mermaids' garden escapade
Then undersea, came P and T
With their underwater plans for a movie
The girls freak out, and start to shout
But everything works out eventually
"Newsflash" (summarized to the tune "Oh What a Beautiful Morning")
There's some bright golden corn in the cornfields
There's some bright golden corn in the cornfields
The news people sigh, no newsflashes arise
When down at the farm, two guys sensationalize
Oh what a beautiful newsflash
Oh what a beautiful sight
I've got a wonderful feeling That there will be some news tonight
"Save the Day" (summarized to the tune "Pop Goes the Weasel")
Round and round the Harbor Patrol
The lady chased the whopper
The lady told them to get lost
And they couldn't stop her!
A jet ski for a sea of sharks
A chopper for a rescue
That's the way the story goes
Oh! What a whopper!
"Catch That Butterfly" (original lyrics from "Obsession" by Animotion)
I will have you
Yes I will have you
I will find a way and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterfly
I will collect you and capture you
No more needs to be said about this absolutely brilliant episode about a British bug collector and two helpful stagecoach drivers. Hi-ho old chap, I've said a mouthful here.

"That's a lie," an outraged Blake Carrington, on trial for murder, insists to his attorney, "She's lying." "She" is Blake's despised ex-wife, who has resurfaced in court to testify against him. And Blake, you'd better get used to it, because as Dynasty's second season unfolds, perjury will be the least of her offenses. Joan Collins joined the cast as the vengeful, scheming and manipulative Alexis Carrington and immediately put Dynasty on the map as a formidable ratings rival to Dallas. It doesn't take long for Alexis to literally make herself right at home. She moves back into her former art studio on the Carrington estate and insinuates herself in the tumultuous lives of her ruthless ex-husband ("'Don't' and 'Can't' are not in my vocabulary," he proclaims), his "ever so noble" new wife, Krystle (Linda Evans), her sexually confused son, Steven (Al Corley), and her spoiled, resentful daughter, Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin).
Events transpire in this instantly addictive sophomore season at a fast and furious pace beginning with Alexis's divisive return and the verdict in Blake's trial, and proceeding with familial estrangement; calamitous accidents; shocking revelations; pregnancies; sexual shenanigans; infidelity; temporary blindness; a suicide attempt; and a kidnapping. And did we mention the introduction of luscious Heather Locklear as golddigger Sammy Jo, who marries Steven, or Alexis and Krystle's first "cat fight," a pillow-wallopin
