RAMBO TRILOGY ROCKS.......2007-07-12
Rambo Series HAs been All time favourite of Mine... This Ultimate Edition is must to have for every Die Hard Fan of RAMBO. The Extras in First Blood & Rambo 3 are Decent but i think the Survival Mode is Little bit Childish, it would have been more Good if they had put some Behind the scenes instead of Survival Mode. Overall This Trilogy Pack is the best money can buy.
Rambo is a classic!.......2007-06-14
The Rambo movies are still a classic! A must own for any action collection! The first one is definetly the best! But the second one is still great! And the third one has its moments. Some of Sylvester Stallone's most well know work! Classics! Great action movies!
RAMBO IS HOT!!!!!.......2007-06-08
REALLY, I ORDERED IT FOR MY NEPHEW FOR HIS B-DAY. BUT I OWN IT ALSO.
SYLVESTER STALLONE IS INCREDIBLY HOT!!!!!
GREAT ACTION.
Stallone's Action Trilogy Entertains, But The Lack of Extras Annoys.......2007-06-04
The Rambo trilogy was, for many, a symbol of the 1980s. Following the story of former Green Beret and Vietnam vet John Rambo, each of the 3 Rambo movies was a bit different in flavor than the others. For whatever reasons, the Rambo movies were co-opted by politics. Reagan infamously declared "Rambo is a Republican", much the same way he tried to glom on to "Star Wars" and Springsteen's "Born In The USA" as symbols to boost his own popularity. For others, the name "Rambo" became the symbol of what was seen as American ignorance and a "shoot first" attitude. These attitudes do seem to indicate some misunderstanding of the Rambo character, and even the movies. In any case, as the 1980s faded (and people began to react negatively to the Reagan era's now obvious facade of machismo), this association ended up hurting Sly Stallone's career, despite his ample abilities. It was unfortunate really, as Stallone has generally proven to be dependable in most of his work, such as his portrayal of the likeable loser Freddy in "Copland". It was Stallone's ability to infuse the Rambo character with a sense of humanity that was indicative of his work as an action star; this ability would prove useful in providing "Daylight" and "Cliffhanger" with somewhat believable action hero protagonists (but was sadly MIA in the turkey "Judge Dredd".
The Rambo Trilogy was originally released on DVD, with a bonus disc chronicling the Rambo legacy. Unfortunately, this "Ultimate Collection" fails to include that bonus material, instead giving us a "Metavision" gimmick, which ultimately proves a poor substitute. The lack of extras is the biggest mark against this release. Thankfully, Sylvester Stallone's commentary on First Blood remains intact, and provides a remarkable amount of insight into the movie's creation and backstory. The commentary tracks on the other two movies, however, are not up to the same standards, in part due to the lack of any actor commentary.
"First Blood" is probably the most different in tone of the trilogy, and focuses on Rambo's loss of identity after leaving the military. Drifting from town to town, Rambo finds himself alone and unable to fit into peacetime society. When small town sheriff Teagle (himself a veteran of the Korean War), played with consummate professionalism by Brian Dennehy, decides to throw Rambo in jail for vagrancy, Rambo's survival instincts are triggered by a flashback to his days in a Vietnamese POW camp. As a result, Rambo escapes to the mountains in dramatic fashion, and is pursued by Teagle and his posse. Naturally, the situation escalates as Rambo reverts to his commando training, and the well armed, but poorly trained locals end up over their heads. Rambo's old commander, Trautman, shows up to try to bring Rambo in quietly and without bloodshed. In the end, however, Rambo returns to town in explosive fashion, with the intent of making Teagle pay. Trautman finally intervenes before Rambo can kill Teagle, and Rambo, in an emotional climax, breaks down in tears, and allows himself to be taken into custody. "First Blood" is certainly more realistic and restrained than the later Rambo movies, and has an undercurrent of quiet tragedy in seeing a proud soldier being rejected not by "the commie left wing", but by Main Street America itself.
While "First Blood" was more nuanced, "Rambo: First Blood Part 2" was was an attempt to create a sort of over-the-top, military piece writ mythic. This time around, George Cosmatos took the director's chair, with the script being written by James Cameron (yes, THAT James Cameron)and Sylvester Stallone, based on a story by Kevin Jarre. At the time, the Cold War had risen to a fever pitch. The movie involves Rambo being sprung from military prison by the government and his old commander Trautman, in exchange for participation in a recon mission in Vietnam to look for POWs. In Thailand, Rambo meets the shady bureaucrat Murdock, who is in charge of the mission. Once back in the jungle (after a disastrous air drop), Rambo meets up with Vietnamese rebel Co Bao, played by the beautiful Julia Nickson. Apparently, Ms. Nickson received a Razzie for worst debut performance in this movie; however, given the bad, stereotypical pidgeon English she was forced to recite, I doubt that Judi Dench could have done much better with the source material. When Rambo actually finds and rescues a POW, and brings him back to the rendezvous point, Murdock pulls the plug and strands Rambo in the jungle, where he is captured, and is subsequently tortured by Padovsky, a Russian commander who is in Vietnam for some reason. It's up to Co Bao to help Rambo escape, and before it's over, Rambo adds a few hundred notches to his kill count, and even blows up a Russian helicopter gunship.
While the movie is pure Hollywood hyperbole, it is executed in a surprisingly epic fashion. This was before action movies had required clever catch phrases, multiple slow-motion shots of the same milk truck exploding, and other overtly self-conscious cliches. There is even a tidbit of criticism of the politics which led to the Vietnam War in the form of a veiled reference to the military-industrial complex, as well as some surprisingly artistic cinematography (such as the requisite tragic death scene). But let's not fool ourselves: this was not meant to be high art, but rather a high action movie, and it succeeds. Stallone's ability to effectively emote stands in bizarre contrast to Rambo's overly-muscled figure, and provides just the right amount of surreal affability to make the wholesale destruction watchable. Of particular note is Jerry Goldsmith's outstanding musical score, which is probably one of the most epic soundtracks I've yet to see in a military action movie.
"Rambo 3", the illogically titled third entry, was released at a time when big budget Hollywood movies were becoming more formulaic and predictable, and it does show in the final product. The conceit this time is that Rambo is reluctantly brought out of early retirement at a monastery (of all places), to rescue Colonel Trautman, who was captured by the Russians in Afghanistan. This time, Rambo hooks up with Afghan freedom fighters to stop a ruthless Russian territorial commander. This movie simultaneously tries to be more tongue-in-cheek, and yet also more serious, with its sermonizing about the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. The movie works, but not as well as its predecessors. What's even more bizarre, of course, is watching it in the context of post-9-11 geopolitics, as some of Rambo's allies may have well gone on to join the Taliban, and help Bin Laden's terrorist activities. Fortunately, the action is still explosive, although by this point, it was starting to become a little too predictable.
For the last few years, there have been rumors about a possible "Rambo 4", and it appears that a fourth installment, simply named "John Rambo", is finally officially on its way. It's unclear whether it will be able to make an impact in this day and age, or whether it will have the same "sheen of consummate professionalism" as the first 3. In any case, the movies are what they are: well-executed action entertainment. While the DVD extras are sparse (you know we all would love Stallone and Julia Nickson to be on the Rambo commentary track), the movies themselves work well.
Awful DVD's!!!.......2007-05-22
First of all this review is not for the movies (which by the way totally rock!), but rather the horrendous DVD treatment that they receive here. I was shocked to find that there is not even a theatrical trailer, or anything that would give you insight about the making of the movies. Instead we are treated to "special ops features" which basicaly consists of clicking on a title such as "rambo's knife" and being taken to the scene in the movie where rambo gets his knife, which is often accompanied be useless info on the screen about the knife that can easily be obtained by watching the movie!!! It is a shame because I have so much love for these movies, and yet I feel like I got screwed with the DVD's. If I were you I would spend a little more money to get the older OOP DVD's. Anything has to be better than this.

Worst of them all.......2007-09-12
Again, the first movie was fantastic, but this third one was so idiotic....well, it just is. Why would any helicopter fly at ground level against a tank? Please. That part alone destroyed the movie.
I've Wanted To Watch This Movie For Years, And It's Worth The Wait........2007-04-04
I watched the first two Rambo movies prior to the release of this one. Actually, this one sounded very interesting, but I did not watch it until now. One reviewer pointed out this was considered the weakest of the three; why is it the weakest is also the most enjoyable (as said reveiwer also seemed to agree).
One reviewer mentioned the boy was one reason this movie was not as successful, and gave other examples, though failing to mention Aliens (maybe because that was an exception). Actually, it helped. So did the relationship between Rambo and Trautman. I also thought the scene of Rambo riding underneath the tank to avoid the searchlight was original and creative.
The edition I saw had a documentary on a myth of an American hero. They commented that Rambo was one of four characters in print that made the cross to being heroes on the big screen: the others were Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, and James Bond (since then, you can add Harry Potter to the mix.) The one comment I'll make is that Rambo is unique in the mix, because his character did not survive the original novel.
I found this movie enjoyable. Too violent for some people, two examples of unnecessary cussing (all cussing is unnecessary, by the way), and at times it was unbelievable. It is interesting seeing this pre 9/11 movie from a post 9/11 persptective. This was a great picture.
Problem more with Amazon than the movie........2007-01-03
Movie is great. Movie showed up with a broken case and without the Ultimate Edition case sleeve that comes on the movie if you buy it in the store. I would recomend this movie but buy it in a store and not from Amazon.
greatest action star of all time at his zenith.......2005-01-03
Rambo 3 is usually regarded as the weakest in the series. However, I love this film, simply because Stallone plays a borderline superhero better than anyone else. How many other men can combine such a powerful physical presense with so much force of character? While the real-life Stallone is certainly not as virtuous as Rambo, he is known to have incredible willpower and determination. These qualities dominate his portrayal of John Rambo. You look into this man's eyes and you simply cannot imagine him being small or petty. He is reminiscent of Harry Callahan in that regard. Whatever his limitations may be, his integrity and courage are beyond question. In addition, Stallone is so devoted to the discipline of bodybuilding that he has actually managed to create a distinctive look for this film. (As he has done on many other occassions for various movies.) Stallone is so powerfully built in Rambo 3 that he actually seems to belong in the rugged Middle Eastern desert environment. His range may be limited, as we saw in his 'comedy' films, but when he sticks to his forte, playing great heroes, Stallone is the greatest ever.
However, Rambo 3 has other good qualities besides Stallone. There are several great action sequences. The opening stick fight is brutal and effective. The helicopter attack on the Aphgan village is horrific and violent. Crenna's character seems to summon a warmth from Rambo that we do not often see. They work well together. The climactic battle is great. The villain is effective. This is a great action film. While the story may not be as interesting as the first or second entries in the series, it is outstanding in its own right. It is simply a bit more comic strip in nature. It is rather like an updated version of Captain America. This is not intended to be a realistic war movie.
The special features are also quite good. However, the movie is worth the money even if there were no extras. I wish Stallone would make more movies like this one.
More proof of the curse of children.......2004-11-21
I was trying to figure out why I, and most other folks it seems, don't believe that this episode has enough to hold our interest as the others. It certainly has action and destruction, but something is not quite right overall....
Then it hit me. The kid. That's thing that has always rubbed me wrong about this film. And the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Any film in which the adult hero gets all buddy-buddy with a child (regardless of the child's "importance" to the plot) tends to lose peoples' interest. For example: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Wars: Episode 1, Last Action Hero, and so forth. Children simply do not belong in an adult action world, and the films which involve them in the storyline truly do seem to suffer from public disinterest, not to mention bad filmmaking.
This film also has comparatively more "talk" than the first two, and is slower to build. The scene in which Rambo is participating in the Afghan horseback game is clearly ridiculous filler material, and some of the characters are just annoying. I can't explain why. They just are. Especially that kid. He bugs me just as much as he bugs Rambo.
We also see Rambo's trainer/mentor Col. Trautman get into the action, not that that is anything exciting. It's odd that the guy who claims to have made Rambo the killing machine that he is has none of the abilities of his student. For a "Green Beret"--especially one who allegedly has enough skill to warrant being a trainer--his performance in combat is pathetic. Trautman is less a "killing machine" than a washing machine.
There are however some humorous moments which is a new concept to the franchise ("It turns blue.") and not entirely unwelcome, but I believe less talk about the Afghan plight against the Russians, less children, and the body count of the second film would have helped this one immensely. I think it was trying to be cerebral and that is not good for this genre.

Six hours of monosyllabic John Rambo high jinks, best savored in surround sound (for the bone-rattling explosions) and with your brain on pause (for everything else). Sylvester Stallone's second signature character, after Rocky, a seething ex-Green Beret killing machine, went from Viet-vet victim in the original picture, First Blood, flipping out over the ingratitude of his beloved homeland, to a muscle-bound terminator in Rambo III, mowing down Commies in the deserts of Afghanistan. You should consider bypassing the boxed set in favor of just the middle chapter, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, written by James Cameron and directed by George Pan Cosmotos. It's the most balanced and satisfying of the three films: Rambo is dropped back into 'Nam to rescue some POWs, and the action builds steadily in scale and ferocity. Each fireball seems to be bigger than the last. Of all the recent headbanger action movies, only the first Die Hard offers more bang for the buck. The underrated character actor Richard Crenna (a standout sleazebag in Body Heat), as Rambo's military mentor and staunch defender, is the series' secret weapon, providing some welcome human ballast. --David Chute
Customer Reviews:

If you like Sylvester Stallone then you should enjoy these action pack movies.
Rambo.......2007-01-29
These 3 movies are Rambo at his best - it's best to watch all 3 consequetively. We like the first and the third the best.
War Action + Sylvester Stallone = The Perfect Movie.......2006-11-29
No one could have played the part of Rambo better than Sylvester Stallone. He fits the profile of an invincible soldier perfectly: his war-trained, war-stricken , ripped-out body; his serious, aggressive, and somber disposition; and his reputation of being a hardcore action-packer. If Stallone alone isn't enough to draw you to the movie, the action contained within is. From crashing helicopters, to explosive arrows fired from his compound bow, to highly explosive napalm bombs, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat. A single viewing will not be enough once you have seen the series once. Inevitably you will want to see it again, so I recommend purchasing it.
Sly, Why Are You So Good...?.......2005-11-03
Why are Sly's movies so great?
1.) The face.
Every time I watch a movie like Over The Top, I can't help but laugh. If you've watched the epic arm wrestling battle between Hawk and Bull Harley, you know exactly what I'm talking about. sylvester has that awesome face that only he can make... you know, the one that makes it look like he's taking one monster of a dump. Not only that, but while he's making the face he's usually grunting like he's taking one monster of a dump.
2.) The voice.
Sly's got that voice that draws laughs from everybody. There are certain phrases he says that can make me laugh no matter what mood I'm in. Sly's got some sort of wierd Brooklyn-ish accent that makes it tought for him to say his "r's" and his "th's"... as a result, "they" comes out as "dey", and a name like Adrian comes out sounding like "ADE-WIAN!" Here's a listing of some of my favorite Sly sayings:
From Over The Top : "My hat, it's like a switch... when I turn it backwards, I feel like a machine. I feel... kinda like dis twuck back heah!"
From Rocky : "ADE-WIAN!!!! ADE-WIAN!!!!"
From Rambo - First Blood : "Dey dwew first bwood, not me! Dey dwew first bwood."
From Judge Dredd : "I AM DA WAW!"
3.) He's Rambo!
Respect! This is the guy who portrayed John Rambo, the veteran from Vietnam who was harrased by law enforcement officials in a small town... arrested, for vagrancy! The movie was a classic then, and it remains a classic to this day. I don't care what you say, Rambo rocks the Casbah, and I wish Sly would star in another Rambo movie before he reaches his 65th birthday. Also, how many other R-Rated movies do you know that star a war veteran who is betrayed by his government, kills countless Vietnamese soldiers, pummels hapless small-town cops into submission, and shoots a government super-computer with a machine gun while going "YAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!" that managed to spawn its own children's cartoon and full line of action figures? NOT MANY! Despite Sly's appearances in movies like Driven and Get Carter, you can't hold those against him because Rambo overpowers the rubbishness of even those movies. If, for some reason, you get stuck watching Driven - which is a horrible, horrible show - just imagine how the movie would have been if Sly had acted as Rambo in that movie and you should be able to struggle through it.
4.) Jack of all Trades.
In the acting profession, Sly has done it all. He's an accomplished actor, script writer, and even director. He's starred in dramas, action flicks, and comedies. However, where sylvester has the most global appeal is the laugh factor. It doesn't matter if Sly's trying to be funny or not, any movie that Sly stars in is bound to get a laugh or two. Hell, Sly's funnier when he's NOT trying to be funny, as anyone who has seen 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!' will tell you. You might laugh because of some of his stupid dialogue... you might laugh because of something he's doing in the movie that you imitate later (like sylvester lifting weights inside of his semi and doing exercises on his truck in Over The Top)... or you might laugh because he scripted and directed an entire movie that was just plain cheesy (Driven!). For instance, my first impression of Driven was that it was a terrible movie. However, after talking with my mate, we realized just how funny the movie was... simply because Sly wrote the movie expecting it to be taken seriously! With dialogue like this, it's pretty hard to take any movie seriously. Keep in mind that it isn't exact, but I'm not watching that movie again just to provide you with an exact quote.
Sylvester as "The Hummer" Joe Tanto : You know what I'd do to get her back? I'd crawl!
Sylvester's Rival : You'd crawl Joe??!?!?! You'd never crawl!
Sylvester as "The Hummer" Joe Tanto : Ya I would crawl... I'd crawl till on my hands and knees till there's nothing left!
Bottom line is, no matter what Sylvester does, we can always laugh at it, and that makes it a worthwhile endeavour to go to ANY Sylvester movie. Hey, Sly, we're laughing with you man, not at you. Really.
5.) The 'dying breed' factor.
For the same reasons as Arnold, you should make a point of seeing Sylvester's new movies while you still can. Sure, the old man isn't pumping them out as regularly as he used to and when he does, it's usually some stupid sappy love story under the veil of an action movie. However, you have to appreciate the fact that Sylvester was, is, and always will be one of the greatest action movie stars of all time.
So take some time, rent a Sylvester and an Arnie flick tonight, and make sure to see their latest movies when they come out. You owe it to guys everywhere to support your local action movie star! The movie industry is already overrun with teenybopper movie stars and horrible teenage comedies... by passing up your opportunity the other weekend to see 'Collateral Damage' because your girlfriend wanted to go see Britney Spears' movie, you're only doing your part to see this hideous trend continue. Just remember that.

And the hits just keep on coming. Sylvester Stallone, who can't seem to draw flies unless he's playing Rocky Balboa or John Rambo, went back to the Rambo well (or septic system, as it were) to show his well-known solidarity with the Afghan freedom fighters who battled the Soviet army in the 1980s. This time it's personal: his handler, Richard Crenna, is captured by the Evil Empire and so it's up to Rambo to leave his work in a monastery in Southeast Asia (oh, puh-leeze) in order to rescue him from the Ruskies. Ever wonder why the Russians had such a miserable time in Afghanistan? It was because Rambo took them on single-handed and kicked their hammer-and-sickle heinies all the way back to Moscow. Cartoonish action, taken ever so seriously by Stallone, who was working desperately to scrape away the unsightly wax buildup from his reputation. --Marshall Fine

PART 3 IS NUMBER 2 ! 2 STARS IS GENEROUS!.......2007-08-22
The third installment of Rambo isn't any better than part 2! It is a comic book action movie with wooden performances and ridiculous situations. I give it 2 stars because.....I guess it is watchable nonsense? The DVD special edition is way better than the movie deserves.
Stallone Alone!.......2006-11-26
This movie was top notch in its own right! Let's not forget to mention that he's still got the body! True movie watchers not just Stallone fans must agree that each movie should not be compared to another, because no two are alike! I'm a Stallone fan and you couldn't convince me otherwise.Loved it!!!
Uneven, Un-PC and deeply misjudged. But still fun........2006-04-16
Whatever credibility Rambo once had in First Blood is totally gone in this film that is more like Cold War propaganda than anything else, which is probably why they chopped First Blood off the title and we're simply left with the Rambo bit. As a character he's a bit more talkative but still has the same sadness in his eyes. And Stallone is absolutely HUGE. Yes, he's always been big but his figure in Rambo III is probably the biggest I've seen him. He could probably rip Arnie's head off.
Since walking off into the sunset in Part II, Rambo is now living in a monastery in Thailand and has found inner peace. But he still takes time out to batter people with sticks in cage fights to raise money for the Buddists. But the no-good Red Ruskie Soviets are causing havoc in Afghanistan and one particular Colonel is taking great pleasure in massacring whole villages.
Colonel Trautman and Robert Griggs (the ever-brilliant Kurtwood Smith) try to convince Rambo to come help them sort the Ruskies out. But Rambo is having done of it. He's done killing! He wants to raise a family.
So Trautman is left to go it alone and is captured. Griggs delivers this bad news to Rambo who makes up his mind to go on another killing spree. Which is entirely okay as long as he only kills the Ruskies right?
Once in Afghanistan, Rambo teams up the Muhujideen, learns of their many woes and agrees to fight the Ruskies with all his might. Even though he was going to do that anyway, but it's nice to have friends.
The rest of the film is no more than a succession of comic-book action scenes and shoot-em-up set pieces. It's brilliantly shot, seriously, it's some of the best cinematography I've seen in an action film. I never expected Rambo III to look so good! It's a shame that Peter MacDonald (who was actually the second unit director shunted into 1st place after Russell Mulcahy left) doesn't stage the action with any sense of fluency. Yes, it all looks big and bold, but it's kinda clumsy and cumbersome. At the time, it was the most expensive movie ever made (even at a mere $65 million) and while it may be grand, it sure ain't graceful.
Jerry Goldsmith's score is once again brilliant. But quite a lot of his original material was left out and old tracks from Part II spliced in. So as long as your prepared for sudden jump cuts in the music, you should really get a kick out of it.
When it originally came out, Rambo III was kinda disregarded as a totally unnecessary sequel but in recent years the film has gained a political subtext and can actually be viewed in quite a few subversive ways. While I understand that the makers wanted to give the film a serious point of view regarding the Russian occupation of Afghanistan, I feel that integrity that the film has in modern politics should be disregarded. This is a RAMBO movie for Christ sake. The logic is shoot now, ask questions never. America did do the right thing by helping the Afghans fight off the Ruskies. But they did they wrong thing leaving the country to crumble afterwards (just like Rambo does). The rest is history. But I don't think a review of Rambo III is the best place to discuss this.
It's a flawed sequel, but I like it better than Part II. There are some seriously misjudged moments but it's still a fun ride. I'm not sure a fourth is necessary since Jerry Goldsmith and Richard Crenna have since died, but I can't judge until I see it, huh.
Belongs to history of the Cold War.......2005-09-05
You have to see this movie as it is: a Cold War period document. People who see some kind of taliban tribute are wrong, this movie is just patriotic propaganda. And by the way, there were some mudjaheddins who were tolerant people, like Massoud. Of course, history plays now some funny games, with the good mudjahedins becoming the bad guys, but the Russians will NEVER be the good guys, when we see what they're doing in Tchetchnya. Neither they'll be forgiven for the havoc they've made in Afghanistan during more than 15 years before their invasion. Otherwise, it's a good action movie, not boring at all, if you're not looking for realism. Also, I think there's an image that was censored: a red star on a tank destroyed by a missile, as a symbol. I've seen it on big screen, and not finding it on my DVD version. Anyone ?

Awesome Truth.......2007-04-16
This is a great movie that everyone should see. Not just blacks, but latinoes, Asians, and even whites to open eyes to a truth that goes overlooked. This movie basically tells of the "new slavery" for minorities, the prison and so-called "Justice System." There's no justice. This movie is a must see, and needs to air on BET and other public airways, in order to get the message out.
A must see movie for the people.......2005-07-16
This is an excellent movie. One that shows us how to rally the people and give us the strength to stand up to the power structure of this nation and fight for justice, if we truly want to. A great movie. I was quite inspired.
