A rare sequel that can stand alone, 1983's The Black Stallion Returns is both a fun follow-up to the 1979 Carroll Ballard/Francis Ford Coppola film and a fine adventure in its own right. Kelly Reno returns as the now adolescent, deceptively ordinary Alec Ramsay, who stows away on a plane for Casablanca after the titular horse is kidnapped by Arabs. Getting him back pitches Alec into the middle of tribal rivalries and all sorts of complicated, dangerous intrigue. The cast includes Teri Garr, Vincent Spano, and Woody Strode, but the real star here may be cinematographer Carlo Di Palma, a veteran of several Woody Allen films and a master of color, light, and framing. Director Robert Dalva edited the previous film and happily executes countless ideas he appears to have stored up from his first stallion outing. But it's Reno's resourceful hero--his anti-Harry Potter normalcy--that finally takes hold of viewers. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I do Love Horses.......2007-05-12
I do enjoy this second one as much as the first, I can never get enough of watching horses.
A dissapointed teen using kid form.......2007-01-27
This makes a good movie for some kid who just wants to see pretty horses and exciting drama, but fans of the original movie and, indeed, the books, will be bitterly disappointed. Reno's acting is pretty good, but everything else is cheesy. Alec sneaks a ride to Arabia, and after some dramatic close calls and fights in the desert and some interaction with a pretty girl, he decides...well, I won't give away the ending. Good for kids 10-13, but not anyone older or who knows horses or the book more.
Could have been a lot better..........2005-10-07
The first movie was saved by fantastically beautiful cinematography and Mickey Rooney's acting.
This movie deviates so far from Walter Farley's book and while it isn't horrible, it isn't in the same class as the first.
You really have to be horse crazy to love this one.
The Black Stallion Returns: A quest across Morocco by "horseman 11".......2005-07-06
For one thing, this movie was kind of cheesy.Yeah,it was entertaining until I read the book two years ago.The book takes place in Saudi Arabia and the movie they are in Morocco. Some of the arabic dialougue I think might be gibberish like the old Hollywood Indian languages were. Then,in the novel,Alec's mom makes him give Shetan back to Abu ja kub bin Ishak, who sees in the newspapers the photos of the match race in the original. Then, in the novel,Henry and Mr. Volence,Alec's competetor in the original, accompanies him to Saudi Arabia. Also,Raj,Alec's friend, was a houseslave to a friend of Mr. Volence,in the novel, who accompanies them acroos Arabia.Very disapointing if you are a fan of the book or is very strict on cheesy movies.
The Black Stallion Returns - Not up to par.......2005-07-01
I agree with Laurel962- This movie is nothing like the original. Actually, I think the Black Stallion books are much more culture-related and celebrate the grace and beauty of Arabia. But the two idiots in this movie, the Arabian bad guys, are just stupid. It was boring, too. Also, Kelly Reno didn't do a fantastic job, either. He was much more appealing in the original Black Stallion. A good flick for little kids, but mostly it's just dirt. I only gave it 3 stars because the Black was beautiful! He did look different though, I don't think it was the Black(Cass Ole).

The Black Stallion
Adapted from the beloved novel by Walter Farley, the 1979 family classic The Black Stallion was hailed by no less than hard-to-please critic Pauline Kael, who wrote that "it may be the greatest children's movie ever made." A visual feast from start to finish, the timeless tale plays out on almost mythic terms. A young boy survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a deserted island with a graceful black stallion, with whom the boy develops an almost empathic friendship. After being rescued and returning home, the two make a winning team as jockey and lightning-fast racehorse under the tutelage of a passionate trainer, played by Mickey Rooney in an Oscar-nominated role. From its serenely hypnotic island sequence to the breathtaking race scenes, this delightful film is guaranteed to enthrall any viewer, regardless of age. The Black Stallion is a genuine masterpiece of family entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
The Black.......2006-02-01
Great classics, good price. My daughter loves anything and everything to do with horses and you can imagine that she loves these movies. It's great to have been able to enjoy these films myself as a child and to now enjoy them with my children.
Charming boy-horse relationship.......2005-09-26
The beauty of friendship and the power of love between a boy and a horse is shown in these adventure films where the gallant black horse and the sympathy of the boy make you love the films.
Besides the surrounding atmosphere and the other actors contribute to the making of these very charming films which can be seen with all the family.
Pure, Stunning, Poetic. . ........2004-11-04
Being an avid horselover, I'm probably pretty prejudiced in the eyes of some. However, I know many horse stories/movies which I found to be cheesy and outright moronic. The Black Stallion and its sequel are, however, indescribably superb. I won't repeat other reviews by writing a synopsis, but the black stallion isn't just a simple kids movie at all. It is a spiritual journey. The acting is so excellent that it doesn't even seem to be acting at all. The visuals are stunning and the soundtrack gorgeous. And the story itself, well, it speaks for itself. Watch these two movies if you have a trace of soul left in you from a silly world-you will be reminded.
so nostalgic..........2004-05-23
Watching these movies brings me back to my early teenage years when Walter Farley's books were the ultimate for a horse crazy girl. Maybe they are not as sophisticated or technologically advanced as newer horse flicks, but they are special in their own right. Four different horses were used for this film, this explaining slight differences in appearance. In accordance to breed standards, an Arabian horse is the only horse that can be purely black, as the members of this breed have predominantly black skin, whereas other breeds have pink. A true black Arabian horse will not "bleach out" as a bay will. Anyhow, great movies for any horse lover.
The Black Stallion.......2003-01-01
If you have read the book, or just have a horse crazy person in your house you MUST see the movie! THe backround music in The Black Stallion is incredible, it follows the horses movements! You almost feel as if you are ridding the Black!

If you are looking for the movie, this is not it! .......2005-08-13
This is actually the early 90's television series starring Richard Ian Cox as Alec. It should have been titled "The Adventures of the Black Stallion". I loved this series as a child and was so happy they to see they released some of the episodes on DVD.
This disc contains 5 episodes. The Alhambra Zarr, Almost Home, Deadliest Bidder, Blackout, and Detour. They are episodes 6-10 from the 2nd season.
