This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a popular syndicated TV series, numerous comic-book spinoffs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work), the original theatrical release made hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his archenemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die), and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Dazzling, energetic, and altogether confusing in its original form, the film has since been released on video, laserdisc, and DVD in this revised widescreen "director's cut," with additional footage, director and producers' commentary, a photo and artwork archive, the original trailer, and an official time line of the film's evolution from script to screen. A must for Highlander fans ... and you know who you are! --Jeff Shannon

Christopher Lambert.......2007-09-03
Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) can't live forever unless you cut his head off. Great movie about a group of immortals fighting for the ultimate prize.

So bad it's bad..........2007-08-10
There are cult movies that have something special about them but are just not mainstream, and then there are cult movies that are utterly awful but that some group of people loves anyway. Highlander is the second type.
Highlander creates a great fantasy scenario. An unexplained, even among its members, group of immortals is born on Earth over the ages. They have to cut off each other's heads in attempt to be the last one standing, at which point the last one will receive some sort of great prize. Interesting issues of their (semi) immortality are touched upon, such as what it's like to be with a partner and watch them grow old and die without them.
Despite the interesting premise, the real problem is three-fold: 80's cheese dogging every inch of the film when they are in the "current" day period fighting, throw away acting, sloppy set-ups for action premises, particularly the last part of the film where a relationship starts out of nowhere. It just doesn't stand up as a good film, and as I watched it I either laughed at how bad it was or kept wondering if I should just shut off and stop the terrible waste of time.
Immortal cheese........2007-07-30
I loved this movie when I was younger, I haven't set through the whole thing in years ,I Know why. It is so cheesy and badly done I can see why it only appealed to me when I was younger. In the first fight sequence the guy who is fighting Nash backflips 25 times. My son and I who is 11 laughed our heads off. The sword fighting scenes were unbelievable, poorly choreographed, sparking like the blades were made out of flint. How exactly does a sword knock down a castle wall in the fight sequence of Remirez and the Kurgan. Also I never noticed all of the ghosts flying around after one of the Immortals died, which really looked silly. Overall I guess its ok for kids ,but be forewarned theres alot of language and some nudity so be quick to edit.
Highlander the movie was a work of art......... :).......2007-07-03
The film is a classic and I was happy to find it. It was in great shape, was delivered quickly, and without problems. Amazon makes it all easy.
The Original Highlander - Cult Classic.......2007-07-03
1986's "Highlander" is a good science fiction movie with an exceptionally intriguing concept for a storyline, that a race of immortals live among us and are battling to the last man for an unnamed prize. The concept fueled three big screen sequels and at least two TV series. This is the movie that started it all.
The movie proceeds along parallel story arcs. In one, an antique dealer named Nash, played by Christopher Lambert, battles a series of immortal opponents in modern day New York, while attracting the attention of a curious female police scientist named Brenda (played by Roxanne Hart).
In the second story arc, a Scots Highlander named Connor MacLeod (also played by Lambert) who, after being mortally wounded in battle in 1536, discovers that he is immortal. Connor is sought out by an even older immortal named Ramirez (perfectly played by Sean Connery) who teaches him how to fight and how to avoid losing his head to another immortal. Ramirez prepares Connor for the necessarily lonely life he will have, outliving the mortal humans around him. Ramirez also prepares him for an eventual rematch with Kurgan, the evil seven-foot giant immortal who first wounded Connor in battle.
The two story arcs will come together in New York City in the present. Nash, as Connor now calls himself, finds himself falling in love with Brenda just as his old nemesis Kurgan arrives for "the Gathering", the final battle of immortals. Connor and Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown) will maneuver for a final confrontation at swordpoint that only one of them can survive.
"Highlander" was apparently strapped by a small budget that limited production values and special effects, but the producers more than made up for this with beautiful location shooting in Western Scotland, a magnificent score by QUEEN, and some well-staged action sequences. The interaction between Macleod and Ramirez is priceless, as Ramirez imparts both fighting skill and friendship to the young Macleod.
This movie is highly recommended as an exceptionally entertaining experience to science fiction fans and to fans of the later versions of this storyline.

A distant and animated sequel to the 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish swordsman, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance concerns the tale of Colin MacLeod, a 2nd century, Celtic warrior who becomes immortal following his defeat at the hands of Roman tyrant Marcus Octavius. Colin spends the next couple of millenia chasing after Marcus--also immortal--as the latter reinvents himself time and again as a ruler of kingdoms in every corner of the globe. The longtime duel extends into Earth's dystopian future about 200 years from now, where Colin--now a wandering mercenary--finds Marcus once again making lives miserable as head of a private government wielding a deadly virus. Drawing Colin into the fight is the lovely Dahlia, hauntingly reminiscent of every woman the hero has loved over hundreds of years. Dynamic, visually compelling, and boldly imaginative, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is full of surprises and more than just another story of an embittered loner meandering through a futuristic wasteland. Directed by the prolific Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Neo-Tokyo). --Tom Keogh

Meh.......2007-08-24
This didn't impress me to much. Not worth buying in my opinion. I enjoy highlander movies and some animated stuff, like Vampire Hunter D, Ghost in the Shell and such. This movie does not stand out.
This Search Grows Tiresome..........2007-08-14
The 'Highlander' franchise is one that I have been a fan of for several years. I wasn't a fan in the beginning, but when the latest live-action film "Highlander: Endgame" was released to theaters it got my attention, and caused me to want to see the films that led up to it. I enjoyed the first film "Highlander", was less than pleased with the sequel "Highlander 2: The Quickening", was happier with the third entry "Highlander: The Final Dimension", and finally thrilled with "Highlander: Endgame" (the only sequel to come close to the original, in my opinion). I've reviewed each of the films in the series in previous reviews, if you're interested in reading them, anyway, when I heard that there was to be another film added to the series I was excited by the prospect of where they would take the franchise next. Then I read that it was to be an animated film done in the anime style, which I thought was alright, not my favorite option, but you take what you can get, if nothing else it will have plenty of impressive action sequences. Boosting my confidence in this upcoming film was the fact that it was being directed by the director of "Ninja Scroll", an anime film I'd heard of (though never seen) and one that, to my understanding, is considered a classic of the genre. So, when the day arrived for the movie to be released to DVD I made sure that I bought it as soon as possible and watched it quickly thereafter, but was my excitement premature or did this newest entry succeed in carrying on the legacy of the Highlander, while heading off in a bold new direction?
"Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" focuses on another immortal member of the clan MacLeod, Colin, who discovered he was an immortal in the midst of battle against an invading force lead by a man named Marcus Octavius. Not only did Octavius seemingly kill Colin, in truth only unlocking his immortal gift, but he also murdered Colin's beloved wife. With only his thirst for vengeance to sustain him, Colin travels through the ages hunting Octavius (who also happens to be immortal) with only one goal in mind, taking his head, because in the end there can be only one.
Well, when I bought this movie I had high hopes that it would be another strong entry into a franchise that has had its share of problems, but I was aware of the possibility that it could leave me disappointed based on what I'd heard by some early reviewers. Their thoughts were that the movie was all flash, but no substance, something like the way "Highlander 2: The Quickening" felt to audiences. But I still had hope, and so, I watched the movie, enjoying certain aspects, but in the end, I feel I can't agree completely with those early reviewers, but I can say that they weren't completely wrong either.
As anime movies go, it was entertaining, I'm not the biggest fan of the style though I do enjoy some of the work produced. The action scenes were visually stunning, the animation crisp and fluid, leaving no room to complain. But as impressive as it was to look at, the story was only so-so. It was an interesting decision to have the hero be stalking the villain throughout the entire duration of the movie, but the problem arose from the fact that the hero, Colin, was not all that good of a swordsman. Everytime he faced Octavius he got his butt handed to him, so by the time the movie gets to the final fight, you're pretty much not caring about the hero because he's proved himself to be a lesser fighter than his opponent. So if Colin defeats Octavius (which is the predictable ending) it's unbelievable because why would he all the sudden be able to stop this opponent when before he's never stood a chance, and if he dies, then the audience isn't satisfied because the hero loses. Meaning no matter what happens the writers have put themselves into a no-win situation. To top things off the fact that Colin is still alive and allowed to hunt Marcus is ludicrous, because if Marcus had any brains about him, he would simply take Colin's head and be done with it, he had plenty of opportunities. There was a clue that I had caught on to that led me to wonder about this film's chances of impressing me in the first place, the fact that the story takes place in the future, a concept that was dealt with unsuccessfully in the second film. Also, the ever present love story in these films was not too well developed, and felt more like it was just thrown in as an afterthought.
"Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" isn't a completely horrible movie, there were some aspects that were cool, and as far as this franchise goes it's better than "Highlander 2: The Quickening", but it's definitely not comparable to the first and fourth film, or even the third one for that matter. If you're an anime fan you'll probably enjoy this movie, simply because it appears to have all the elements that make for a classic anime film, but it just wasn't for me.
"Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is unrated and contains violence, language, and sexuality/nudity.
Another disgrace to the original Highlander film.......2007-07-31
If you are a fan of the first Highlander film, then in order to watch this film you must - as you do with the Highlander TV series and its movie Highlander: Endgame - consider this storyline to be a reality other than that of the original film, and its 2 sequels (if you even consider the 2 sequels to be related to the original).
As for this film, it falls incredibly short of the greatness of the original Highlander. Our Immortal "hero", Colin MacLeod, is just a one dimensional character, blinded by hate and the need for vengeance. He never once stops to smell the roses, and enjoy the gift of immortality, instead its a never ending journey to kill his nemesis, Marcus. He doesn't even - in his 2,000 years of existance - learn to become a better warrior, as seen in he is repeated defeats at the hands of his nemesis (he can't even hold onto the sword for goodness sake), and only by the grace of God does he defeat his foe in the end. He is also incredibly stupid, as he doesn't deliver the final blow to an immortal enemy just so that he can get back to fighting his nemesis, thus allowing her to come back to life again, much to the dismay of Colin's new love interest. He is such a pathetic character. And what is it with his Scottish brogue coming and going, coming and going, the voice actor really needs to learn consistancy.
The character Marcus is actually a good villian (almost as good as The Kurgan from the 1st Highlander film), as he uses is immortality to create Empires, and though those Empires ultimately fall, he keeps getting right back up on that horse and tries, tries again. Strong, and respectful of the Immortal Code, he is a far superior character than Colin.
Visually the movie is very good; the storyline may drag on at times, and the flashabacks become repetitious after awhile, but overall its good; and with the exception of Colin the main characters are very good. Its Colin that kills this movie for me, and the 'by the grace of God' ending is annoying as hell. I would personally have preferred that Colin had died at the end. There can only be One, and that One is Connor MacLeod.
This is real entertaiment..........2007-07-21
This movie is very cool, the animation is awesome and also his music. The people from Mad House did it again, with an excellent history and cool characters, Highlander did take his vengeance with this feature. The dvd has a nice menu with some very cool special features, and his price is ok due the quality of the final product. It is a must for any ANIME FAN or HIGHLANDER FAN.
Great visual effects but falls short on character development.......2007-07-17
Being a huge fan of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and Ninja Scroll, and hearing that Highlander: Search for Vengeance shared the same director, I immediately purchased this DVD.
The earth is in ruins, destroyed by warfare, global warming, and plague. New York City is also in ruins, with the exception of a fortified Central Park, which is home to an elite population and ruled by Marcus Octavius, an immortal who has ruled many past civilizations. He is also the one responsible for the death of Macleod's wife. The landscape environment reminds me of post-apocalyptic movies like Mad Max - Road Warrior, Dawn of the Dead, and Bloodlust.
The movie starts off with a bang, as the Highlander is traveling solo through the NJ meadowlands (now a ravaged wasteland/swamp) on a small motor boat and meets up with a mutant immortal who wields a gigantic chainsaw. Great fight scene. Throughout the movie there are notable flashbacks to historical periods, like the Fall of Rome, feudal Japan, and the World War.
However, I gave the movie only a three star rating because of the substandard plotline. This is related to some major character defects:
1) Macleod: Comes across as a mindless berserker. He's been tracking Marcus for 2 thousand years, and whenever they meet, it's a rather lousy one-sided duel to the death, where Macleod gets defeated each time. His head is spared in all of those encounters because miraculously, he either ends up on holy ground, a roof collapses between the two combatants, or Macleod's friends come to the rescue. This reminds me of an X-Man who shares similar powers (of having luck on your side) and hairstyle - Longshot.
2) Macleod's wife: A seemingly intelligent, caring, and loyal partner. my sympathy for her quickly changed when the scene shows how she schemed her way into Marcus's bedroom and easily slaughtered him with a knife (not knowing he was immortal). So this sort of turns the story inside out.. the "Search for Vengeance" is a result of her original act of vengeance.
Marcus is portrayed as the villain. But one can't help but to feel some envy for this character, who rules as a charismatic leader (albeit with a maniacal persona) and creates great empires from one civilization to another. All the while, Macleod is hoping to get close enough to chop off his target's head, but failing miserably at each opportunity. It's difficult to sympathize with this character because of his inability to learn from past mistakes and novice display of sword-fighting abilities (which inexplicably come to life in the end).

LOVE IT!.......2007-06-28
I've always enjoyed the "Highlander" movies, specifically the swords. I've been fascinated with swords since I was about 5 yrs old. Anyway, it's not a GREAT great film, but it does have a lot of good action in it. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't scared of a little bit of head rolling, swords swinging, and general fantasy flicks.
BETTER WITH EACH VIEWING.......2007-06-07
When I first watched "Highlander: The Final Dimension" a few years ago, I was disappointed. But after watching the film a couple of more times, I started to warm up to it more. True, its still the worst film in the series, but it is still a pretty good movie. The story is a bit weak due to the fact that the writers pretty much rehashed the plot for the first film. Still, the acting is great, and the battle scenes are pretty dang good. While non-fans will find little to enjoy in the film, established fans will be pleased for the most part.
Movie/DVD Grade: B
Highlander3.......2007-02-20
An interesting and exciting movie. Brings another eposode to the story. Enjoyed it for the action and the detail. Worth watching and owning.
A bit of a rehash, but an enjoyable sequel to 1986's "Highlander".......2007-01-05
Ignoring the events of "Highlander 2," this film picks up 9 yrs after the first. We find MacLeod living with his adoptive son in Morocco and satisfied that he is the last immortal and has the coveted "Prize." Soon he recieves a cognition that more immortals are alive (revived from "death" by an archeological dig) and packs for NYC for a duel with the evil sorcerer immortal Kane.
Made while the tv show was at its peak, this film benefits from the influence of its narrative and production style that had been refined over the years. Most of the characters and their relationships (especially the love interests) are thin and underdeveloped. The movie relies heavily on nostalgia for the 1st film for the impact of its emotional scenes. It also mirrors it's story to the point of being a near remake. The police hunt subplot simply drops out of the picture near the end and the villians were too silly. The special f/x are enjoyable but underused (Kane barely uses his illusions during fights.)
Still, the deja vu and pretention and trickery themes are well handled (though not explored as much as they could have been). Lambert is as appropiately meloncally and good humored as in previous entries, van Peeples is clearly having fun with his deliciously devilish over the top performance, Unger is quite attractive (even more so in the obligatory sex scene, of course), and Mako's dignified presence is, of course, a welcome addtion to the "Highlander" saga. The special f/x were good for there time and still fairly impressive today. The DVD is barebones though, and the picture has not been cleaned up.
The concept of immortals and their eternal battle are not explained in this movie and may leave the unintiated confused. Seeing "Highlander" first or doing a little net research may be required for understanding. Overall, a competent production and a worthy if underdeveloped and rushed sequel to the 1986 film.
A true sequal to the original, although the first stood alone........2006-07-04
This is the Third installment of the Highlander movie series, and it is truly the sequel to the first. Againg, the first movie was never intended to have a sequel, but this one did a better job at addapting the first movies story line. Remember, the second movie (the Quickening) was never really intended to be a sequel and to be a different piece of the puzzle, although it was a calculation that misfired with fans and the box office because it did use sean connery and christopher lambert again. The action is good, and it stays true to the highlander themes. But, this movie essentially is the first one retold again, with the explanation that "oops, I guess there was one more alive", a lame cop out to get a sequel. But, again for the collector, you will need this movie in the collection. It is good as a primer to watch the first one again.

Great, but really deserves 4 1/2.......2007-08-29
Like most new television series, this struggles a little bit at the beginning. The writing is weak and what exactly they're trying to do is unclear. (The commentary actually sheds great light on this.) But it's still good and gets better and better.
who is Werner Stocker?.......2007-07-24
I love all the seasons of Highlander. Just wondering tho, who is this Werner Stocker they have listed as the actor? i know for a fact that Adrian Paul is the actor in these wonderful dvd's.

I like so many people loved the first Highlander movie, and was disappointed by every effort since the first. I was really happy with how much the Highlander, the Series made the Highlander Universe grow and expand. This first season DVD is excellent. I love the production notes, the Watcher's Chronicles, and the easy navigation. I was really surprise how many of the first season episode standout as really great. I assumed some the first year stuff actually came in the second season. The DVD set is great and it has of course set me on the path of collecting all the other season. It worth every penny if you are a Highlander Fan!!
Highlander review.......2007-06-01
If you like the Highlander series the way I do you will love this set of DVDs which covers the first season of the series 1 at a time. There is also a section of Bloopers which is always entertaining and serves to put the immortal ones in the real spectrum of human beings. There is a section about the watchers which I found good because the watchers didn't appear in the first season so this section allowed me to see something I didn't think I would be able to. Adrian Paul, Stan Kirsch and Alexandra Vandernoot did a wonderful job of portraying a very fanciful idea of life so that I could believe it. Care was taken throughout the series to address the issues that would rise because of the situation of immortality such as what happens when an immortal "dies" and what situations could rise because of the greed of mortals in dealing with the immortals.
This is a great series!!.......2007-05-14
This is something you should have, if you like highlander then this is for you. The menus are great, the format, all the way it's been made is excellent.

Despite a typically haphazard plot, Highlander: Endgame is a marked improvement over previous sequels. This is the "torch-passing" chapter, in which the Immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) passes his life force to his heroic brother, Duncan (Adrian Paul, star of the 1993-96 Highlander TV series). These appealing stars make a fine onscreen duo, and Paul is a terrific choice to keep the franchise alive--strikingly handsome but possessing enough gravitas to make the prospect of future sequels unexpectedly promising. The movie is incoherent to the uninitiated, but established fans will be reasonably impressed by Endgame's cagey mix of romance, swordplay, and history-spanning action. While the movie's chaotic construction is regrettable, the frequent battles (including dazzling work by Honk Kong action star Donnie Yen) are adequately impressive, and Douglas Milsome--cinematographer of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket--ensures that every scene is strikingly photographed. All in all, Highlander: Endgame is surprisingly worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

A great effort after a couple of stinkers!.......2007-05-08
I loved the first Highlander is was smart, well put together and exciting. This fourth movie is no exception after a couple of really disappointing sequels. This movie seemed like a longer TV episode of the series, with bigger, better effects. If you liked the TV series (which I did) then you'll love this fourth installment in the Highlander epic.
Highlander - Endgame.......2007-03-17
This was a great way for me to watch one of my favorite shows over and over again.
You have to watch a few times!.......2007-03-14
I have seen this movie twice now, and I think the more I watch it, the more I will pick up on. If you're a fan of the TV series, and the first 3 Highlander movies (other than 2 of course!) you're going to love this movie!
Impressive.......2007-02-17
The Highlander movies were sort of strange, to say the least. The first one was fantastic and very original to me - it had an interesting plot and a fantastic concept. Then Christopher Lambert was the perfect character for Connor, and Sean Connery perfect as his mentor. But then the second Highlander movie came out, and it was nothing short of deplorable. In fact, I'm still wondering why Lambert and Connery even egreed to do it. The studio pretty much wants to pretend that one didn't exist. The third one was better than the second, but that's hardly saying much. It at least had an interesting concept of possibilities with the 'realm of immortals', being frozen in ice over time.
But this was a Highlander movie IMO well worthy of the franchise. It utilizes Adrian Paul from the series and does a great job of passing the torch from Lambert to Paul. The story's about another Highlander named Jacob Kell (anyone notice how seemingly all the worst of the bad character's first names start with K? What's up with that? Kell, Kurgan, Kronos, Kalas, Kane, etc.) who seeks revenge on Connor. Moreover, Kell is an immortal that doesn't play by the 'rules', and has far more scalps than any other immortal. After forcing Conner out of hiding, Conner and MacLeod are forced to try to stop Kell.
I liked this one. The choreography was sensational, just like the television series. Adrian Paul really is a martial arts expert, so it's no surprise he and ins sensei had a heavy hand in the sword fights and action scenes. The plot was solid - the love interest was a little dry, IMO. But the theme of the movie more follows the way the story evolved through the television series. Also, the soundtrack was great... although nothing will capture the series quite as well as Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever" or "Prince's of the Universe". But I also wondered... is there even a 'prize' anymore with 'new' immortals??? That's the one thing the sequels & series could never get over. Meh... it's still entertaining and I recommend checking it out. Rumor had it another movie was being made, but I last heard of that one 2 years ago.
Quality Highlander.......2007-01-08
I have to admit, if the Highlander Franchise really has to end with this movie, it ended very well. This movie will be appreciated not just by fans of the movies, but of the Television series as well.

Wonderful Series.......2007-08-06
If you were a big fan of the TV series Highlander or a fan of Adrian Paul then this is a "must have" for you! You can watch the characters grow and mature and meet some new and interesting immortals. The best thing is you don't have to wait for the season to be renewed. A good touch through out many of the episodes was the friendships and trust that developed between the mortals and the immortals. The flashbacks added history and background to the story and the characters. The cost per disc is fantastic especially if you buy it used. It came to less than $10.00 per disc at the time I bought it. I bought the 6 sets used and had problems with Saeaon 6. The shipper replaced it, no questions asked.
Flawed but worth it.......2007-08-05
I much prefer the television series to the films, but that is not to say the TV show was perfect. The greatest weakness of both the TV series and the DVD disks would be inconsistencies. While the show had many strengths, writing was often uneven and the "mythos" of the show was tweaked on more than one occasion to fit the needs of storyline. This is sometimes awkward to watch, given that the one rule of fantasy is to stick to the "givens" you provide as a writer. The DVDs are equally "off" a bit. Commentary for the first two seasons is a tad snarky, and in season one, it sometimes looks like they grabbed the commentators on the way home from the grocery store to make their comments. Later commentary feels somewhat like a bottle of wine (or two) was used to "warm up" the speakers. The video capture also isn't great. Originally produced in the early 90s, this was one of the earliest series to be transferred to digital format. The kind of super-clean image and sound quality one becomes used to in modern DVDs are not present here, and my season one collection, bought many years ago, actually melted down. The sealant used on the inside rim of the DVDs leaked back into the disks and warped them, causing the need for me to re-buy the collection. I did, however, re-buy it, because for all of its flaws, there is something timeless about this show (excusing the obvious pun). The show excelled in casting, with Adrian Paul being the best immortal out there (apologies to Christopher Lambert). Mr. Paul not only had the exotic look appropriate to an immortal, but he clearly invested himself in the role in terms of physicality and dedication. The fights and swordplay are still some of the best I've seen in film, and the actor's range really increased during the run of the show, with new layers of emotional depths explored in every passing season. Adrian Paul was not the only good casting. All of the supporting characters, including the several stunning women, sidekick Stan Kirsch, the yummy Peter Wingfield, earthy and warm Jim Byrnes, and so many more, were excellent. Even the villains of the week were delightful. Rock stars abounded, and while not all of them were top-shelf actors (Roger Daltrey being a notable exception), the music that infuses the show is deeply engaging, from the opening credits by Queen to Jim Byrnes' soulful guitar solos. Half of each season was filmed in Paris. This brought a real visual richness not usually seen in syndicated television, and the flashback scenes, spanning thousands of years, were almost always done with an excellence that is hard to imagine on their probable budgetary limits. In terms of concept, the producers clearly struggled from time to time to find a way out of the "bad immortal gets head cut off" plotline that could have easily dominated the show. While they clearly mis-stepped here and there, the end product, taken as a whole, is a thoughtful and touching one. Duncan MacLeod is the ultimate hero figure ... noble, honorable, enviable perhaps, but deeply lonely. There are a tremendous number of series regulars who don't quite make it to the end of any given season, much less the series, but by having them enter and leave the life of the Highlander, we see a humanity within the immortal that is tremendously engaging. Despite the sometimes painful 80s fashion, I believe this series has a kind of universality. Worth it to anyone who likes action, romance, drama, and a little bit of magic. And who doesn't like all of that?
There can be only ONE!.......2007-05-17
Even though they're are two Highlanders. Well, now there's just one(Highlander - End Game). This series is the most compelling, provocative, sci-fi series around. Imagine living FOREVER. Well, only if you can keep your head. Duncan McLeod of the clan McLeod. This immortal is a true warrior. The loss of friends is immense, the price of being immortal. Duncan, Tessa, Richie, Amanda, Fitzcaine, Joe, and Methos.
Unique and fantastic series.......2007-01-28
I'm very big fan of "Highlander" from very small age. I always waited on tv for new serie and tried not miss one. Then it DVD didn't existed yet, so i record every serie on vhs. And now i'm very glad that it's possible to buy it on dvd.
No doubt that in every season have bad and good parts, but still i wanna have them all in my collection, because i grew up with this series and wanna have it all by hand for time when i will wanna watch it again.
Very Much on the Expensive Side Here.......2006-12-17
Excellent series! However, surprisingly, you can get it much cheaper at the "Highlander Store". This is surprising to me because it is not normal that you can get the best pricing from the original sources. It is usually the case that you get better pricing via third party resellers. Regardless of the cost anywhwere, it is well worth every cent! "There Can Be Only One". Better get yours.

Best season overall.......2007-08-29
It may not have the best episodes (season 5 has those), but I found this and season two to be the best overall. The actors and production staff are seasoned, but the ideas are still fresh.
Highlander The Series - Season 3.......2007-03-17
This was a great way for me to watch one of my favorite shows over and over again.
The Good and the Bad.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 3 begins to show some wear. A few episodes are under par, but these are compensated by some of the better episodes of the entire series. "The Samurai" episode is one of my personal favorites of the series. The character Methos is also introduced in this season. These two facts saved this season from a 3 star rating.
love it .......2005-01-10
great box set but if you really want it go to highlander web site and buy it for 39.95 a set all 6 for 240.00 plus the box to put them in for only $1.00
Bigger and better extras.......2004-09-10
The DVD collections of the Highlander series have just got better and better. I've always loved the series, but what has particularly impressed me has been the extras. I though the individual intros to each episode for Season 1 and 2 were really cool because I hadn't come across that type of approach before, but with season 3 these evolve into mini-documentaries with comments from various cast and crew. I don't tend to have the patience for lengthy audio commentaries, so these are just great - relatively brief and extremely interesting. Season 4 continues the trend.
My favourite episodes in Season 3 are "The Samurai" and "Methos".
My only grumble is I can't stand fold-out packaging -- ugh, you have to spread the wretched thing over half the lounge room floor to find a disk, the coffee table is not even long enough!! I guess I can put up with it though.
A must for any fan of the series!!

Customer Reviews:
Christopher Lambert.......2007-09-03
Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) can't live forever unless you cut his head off. Great movie about a group of immortals fighting for the ultimate prize.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, though would really give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.......2007-08-29
This season probably has the highest number of fantastic episodes. Unfortunately, it has a few real stinkers as well, including the most notorious where the producers betrayed the fans.
Saved by Two.......2007-02-21
Highlander the Series Season 5 is saved by two episodes, "Comes a Horseman" and "Revelation 6:8". These two episodes are considered the best two in the series by many/most fans. They are quite good.
The rest of the season is hit and miss. Good for fans, but at time trying to watch. The show experiments with some interesting things with good and bad results.
The last episode "Archangel" is often hated by fans as an important character is killed. The entire season 6 was supposed to be focused on resolving this one episode, but this idea was condensed into the first two episodes of season 6.
Shaded Reviewer.......2006-04-04
Without a doubt the best season yet. Season five combines an entirely thrilling set of characters including, Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul), Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch), Methos (Peter Wingfield), Amanada (Elizabeth Gracen) and Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes) and let's not forget our comic relief character who continually seems to be popping up from the past, Fitzcairn.
The season exceeds the other before (and after) it mostly because of the script. There are some absolutely brilliant lines in a few episodes that just take your breath away. The character of Methos is really devloped in a most astonishingly and heartily genius manner.
The episodes that really got the limelight from me were 'Comes a Horseman' and it's continuiation, 'Revelations 6:8' mainly starring Methos. It's the first time we get flashbacks from his character and it's really an amazingly well done piece of work. The effort both the actor and the writers put into the character is very noticable and very much appreciated. If only Highlander had known that 5,000 year old immortal from season one.
The opening episode of season five introduces a new character to the screen, Cassandra. A 3,000 year old immmortal whom Duncan met in his childhood. She appears once more later on in the season.
A shocking finale to the season involves a heavy plotline involving Richie and Duncan, with Methos and Joe involved as a backset. A menacing evil has appeared and the ancient prophecy, which started up at the beginning of the season, is now being played out. The last episode ends as a cliffhanger making fans rush to buy the last season, num. 6.
Different Version at Highlander-Official.com.......2005-05-06
Following the advice of another reviewer, I went to the official HL website and found they are indeed selling the sets for half of what other retailers are charging. However - caveat emptor - the Season 5 set that the HL Store sent me has 8 discs, not 9, and seems to be missing two vital (to me, anyway) bonus features - "Peter Wingfield: The Man Who Became Methos" and "The Time of the Gathering: Highlander's 1998 Convention" (which I attended). After getting no response to two separate emails, I took time out of my workday to call the HL Store (they only answer the phone 8:30-5 PST, M-F). The operator I talked to said that the sets they have are the "European" versions of the sets, but they're the same as Anchor Bay's sets. When I told her this wasn't the case, we both took our computers online to Sam Goody, which lists the bonus features (why is Amazon not doing that for Season 5, anyway?). Because her computer was glitching, she asked me to print out the webpage that listed the bonus features and fax it to her. That was the last I heard, and - quite frankly - I don't know if they're planning to do anything about it besides say, "Oh, well." Perhaps I should call again... The practical upshot of all this is, if Methos and/or the 1998 convention hold any importance to you (and who doesn't hold Methos as important?), be careful about buying Season 5 at the Highlander site.
no subtitles.......2005-04-26
I am a fan of the show but was very disappointed to discover that the subtitle feature was not available. I often watch TV late at night and don't like to have the volume very loud, as I don't live alone. The subtitle feature has been a blessing for me when watching movies and other TV shows on DVD. I didn't start my Highlander collection until Season 5 was released, so I am not very optimistic that the other season sets are going to be different. I will still get all 6 seasons but are not going to rave about them. I also didn't like the packaging. Who wants to have to remove one disc to get to another? I will probably have to keep my Highlander DVDs in a CD wallet to make it more convenient.

Theatrically released in 1991 as Highlander II: The Quickening, this sequel was later reedited and gained a small but loyal following (prompting a spinoff TV series), but at the time of its release critic Roger Ebert called it "the most hilariously incomprehensible movie ... almost awesome in its badness." In other words, you might find some guilty pleasure in this chaotic sequel to 1986's Highlander, in which Christopher Lambert reprises his role as Connor MacLeod, a member of the alien race known as "Immortals," banished to Earth from his home planet Zeist some 500 years ago. In the year 1999, Lambert owns a corporation that has created a shield to protect the Earth following the depletion of the ozone layer. But the shield is seized by an evil cartel, and Virginia Madsen plays a scientist who assists MacLeod in his mission to destroy the cartel. Sean Connery also reprises his role from Highlander as the Scottish Immortal named Ramirez (?!), but by the time he starts engaging in dashing swordplay you may wonder if he's wandered in from another movie altogether. Highlander fans welcomed the laserdisc and DVD release of this "renegade" director's cut, which attempts to clarify the original version's confusing plot. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Highlander - the flop.......2007-07-01
Not a favorite 'Highlander' of mine. It lacked credibility. The fantasy of immortality was lost. Why? I'm thankful for "Highlander" and "Highlander - End Game".
COULD ANYONE IMAGINE A WORSE MESS?.......2007-05-25
At least H2 was consistent: The worst scripting, worst directing, worst acting, worst casting, worst editing and worst everything else I've ever seen in a movie. It's the George Bush of movies.
What's worse is that they took one of the best premises around, the HIGHLANDER concept, and so messed and muddled it. In my book this mucked-up monster has replaced BATTLEFIELD EARTH as the most incomprehensible waste of money in cinematic history. (Whew. I feel better. Not much though; but the bad mental taste is somewhat exorcised.)
A large scale, futuristic action movie with a charismatic star........2007-05-02
Four stars for this great looking futuristic environmentally theme action movie. And an extra star for the producers and director for having the tenacity to get the movie back to it's original intent. Of course, along the way they fixed up some of their own errors in judgement, too. Now the movie plays as well with the original.
When Loyds of London, who insured this movie, took over, they assembled the story in chronological order. This was not the intent of the director, who had planned the flash back style used in the first film. This type of story depends on the flashback style.
Some reviewers suggest that the additional 16 minutes are not so important. But I say, that's one sixth of an entire movie. Movies, such as "High Noon" have been made or broken on a mere 10 minutes of screen time.
The movie is filmed in 2:35 aspect ratio by the cameraman that went on to do "GoldenEye", and look
