It's enlightening to view Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton's eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in theaters. The idea of invading aliens ray gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, and the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed to be spread thin on the big screen. On video, however, the movie's kooky humor seems a bit more concentrated. The Earth actors (most of whom get zapped or kidnapped for alien science experiments) include Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Michael J. Fox, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, Tom Jones, and Pam Grier. The digital video disc features an isolated track for Danny Elfman's score, as well as a few other clever and nasty little Martian surprises. --Jim Emerson

Is it Filipino New Year's---what are you people cooking?.......2007-09-06
While searching for Pierce Brosnan films, I ran into one of my best friends who suggested this movie. He never lets me down and knows my taste (besides that he realizes I like Pierce for his looks). This movie is hysterical! What a fantastic spoof on Sci-fi! The imaginative thoughts of Tim Burton is so clear in this 1996 film! The plot is a little weak, hence the 4 not 5 stars. It's basically about Martians that come to earth supposedly in peace, but cultural misunderstandings take place and this sets the mood for the movie. The Martians kidnap and lazer attack some earthlings while they were here visiting. However, they couldn't kill Pierce Brosnan (who would want that handsome head dead)? WHAT A CAST! There are so many headliners in here it is hard to name them all. Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Glenn Close, Annette Benning, Danny DeVito, Rod Steiger, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Tom Jones amd Jack Black just to name a few. I couldn't stop laughing! Highly entertaining and a fun movie to enjoy! A great buy!
A refreshing film!!.......2007-06-15
A refreshing and quite funny film. I saw this film years ago on TV (or on the cinema)and have since tried to obtain a DVD of this classic film. Fortunately amazon has it. It's quite "different" (quirky), but quite entertaining. You won't be dissappointed.
Hooray for Tom Jones!.......2007-05-08
This movie has an all star cast and great visuals. There are a lot of sight gags, and the humor is timeless.
Very funny classic retro movie!.......2007-03-28
I've always loved this movie, the special effects are incredible and the cast surprised me (I didn't know Jack Black was in this movie until recently). I always liked the way they made the movie very retro looking, since it was based on trading cards from 1960's. If you're into wacky sci-fi comedies, I HIGHLY recommend Mars Attacks! It's a shame there are no extras on this DVD, but the movie is worth getting, especially at under $10.
THIS MOVIE IS TOPPS.......2007-02-02
Yes, I bought the TOPPS "MARS ATTACKS" trading cards when they first came out...and I still have them! So when this movie came out I ran to the theater to see it, expecting to be disappointed. Not so. I found Tim Burton's film to be both funny & scary, true to the spirit of the original cards & a great send off of 1950's sci-fi flicks. I consider MARS ATTACKS a classic of the genre. This is a great treat for sci-fi fans!...and I'm partial to Tim Burton's "ED WOOD" as well. Enjoy.

Despite the combined star power in front of and behind the camera, Fat Man and Little Boy is a largely tepid retelling of the history of the Manhattan Project, the atomic testing project that led to the U.S. bombing of Japan during World War II (said bombs were dubbed "Fat Man" and "Little Boy"). The Nevada-based project is headed by General Leslie R. Groves (a testy Paul Newman) and scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Dwight Schultz of the TV series The A-Team), who later regretted his cooperation in the project. The problem with the film lies not with the acting, which includes solid performances by Bonnie Bedelia, Laura Dern, John Cusack, and future U.S. Senator Fred Dalton Thompson, but with the script by director Roland Joffé and Bruce Robinson (Withnail and I and Joffé's The Killing Fields). A subject as morally complex as the creation of a supreme weapon requires a strong and thoughtful script, but Fat Man and Little Boy never gets further than establishing that indeed, atomic power is something to reckon with. Joseph Sargent's 1989 made-for-TV film Day One, with Brian Dennehy as Groves and David Straithairn as Oppenheimer, covers the same story with twice the depth and avoids the pitfall of a romantic subplot (Oppenheimer's dalliance with a communist played by Natasha Richardson), which this film stumbles into. Cusack's doomed scientist is actually a combination of two real-life physicists, Harry Daghlian and Louis Slotkin, who died from radiation poisoning, albeit long after V-J Day. --Paul Gaita

You also might be interested in the great mini-series "Oppenheimer"..........2007-09-08
The BBC released the great mini-series "Oppenheimer" on Region Two DVD format last year.
This great mini-series is still felt to be the best re-creation on film of the people and events leading up to the explosions of the atomic bombs in August 1945. A young SAM WATERSTON plays Oppenheimer brilliantly.
It took years for the BBC to decide to release the series in DVD format, and then it was only in Region Two (PAL), the format used in the UK.
You'd think that they'd release it on Region One (US format), given the fact thatit starts Sam Waterson. However, it has not yet been released in the US.
The three-disc series, which also stars a brilliant David Suchet as Edward Teller, is available thru Amazon in the UK (www.amazon.co.uk) and on eBay in the UK (www.ebay.co.uk) for about $22.00 plus shipping.
Multi-format players are available in the US. It is my understanding that they have to be hacked to play other formats than Region 1,? due to licensing restrictions. I purchased an inexpensive player on eBay (US), which with shipping cost $50.00. The supplier provided the easy instructions to adapt it to Region Two format.
It is worth going to all of this effort to view again this great mini-series, which was virtually ignored in the US when it was shown here, but which remains unrivaled for both its acting and its accurate re-creation of the events surrounding Oppenheimer, his downfall, and the creation of the atomic age.
Very Disappointing.......2007-06-20
As much as I admire Paul Newman, this film is so terribly flawed that even his presence can't salvage it. The Manhattan Project is such a critical juncture in recent history that I think it's very important that the story be told realistically. This film is 90% Hollywood formula and 10% history. Only in the broadest brushstrokes does this movie give the viewer any kind of concept of that monumental undertaking. Do yourself a BIG favor; watch the far superior (and very accurate) "Day One" instead. In all respects, it is a much better account and much more interesting film. The main characters are presented as scientists, engineers, and military officers, not goofballs and nutty professors, as they are in "Fat Man and Little Boy."
Uses for HS chem classes are endless.......2007-06-02
this is a great movie to teach students about the atomic bomb and its creation. I use it in my chemistry class all the time
Disapponting.......2007-04-16
This is such an important story, with layer upon layer upon layer of aspects of the modern realities ushered in by the Manhattan Project. C.P Snow in his famous essay regarding The Two Cultures raises implications about the way that the humanities department trains young minds relative to the science and engineering department. If the military approached a group of leading poets and declared that poetry possessed a potential they wanted to transform into a super weapon--how would the poets have responded? Posing a similar question to physicists, they all raced to the blackboard to be the first to solve the equation for the authorities.
So many issues, creativity, authority, diplomacy, secrecy, espionage, urgency...all provide the natural elements to a serious, gripping story. But this screenplay chooses to throw in silly romantic subplots, and alter the facts in the service of their silly Hollywood formula.Ughh. Especially annoying is the distortion of the circumstances surrounding the lab accident that befell Louis Slotkin, the Canadian, now morphed into a hybrid romantic figure in this puerile reworking of history. Maybe someday, someone will do the subject justice in a dramatic structure, until then the excellent documentary, 'The Day After Trinity' will have to suffice.
The screenplay illustrates the powerlessness of acting talent in the face of poor writing. Unfortunately, and maybe this is an inevitable remark, the film ends with a whimper, not a bang.
Great movie .......2007-04-15
Very nice and entertaining movie overall. General Groves is masterfully played by Paul Newman, and Oppenheimer is also very well roled, but rest of important people were left out. Not much of a good portrait of mahattan project either; the movie only focuses on Los Alamos, living Oak Ridge, Hanford, Tinian and Hiroshima/Nagasaki out. Anyway it has place in my classics list.

Description
Richard Todd delivers a thoroughly winning performance as Peter Marshall, the Scottish-born minister who became Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. While still a boy, Peter wants only to go to sea. But as a young man he experiences a profound awakening which leaves him with the unwavering conviction that he has been called upon to do the Lord's work. He completes his religious training in the United States, where he presides over several congregations. A compelling speaker who believes religion should be fun, Marshall inspires young people to renew their interest in the church, and his ministries prosper. Eventually, he becomes pastor of the prestigious Church of the Presidents, in Washington D.C. and is asked to serve as spiritual guide for the Senate. Co-starring Jean Peters as Marshall's devoted wife, Catherine, "A Man Called Peter" is the deeply moving tale of "a man and his close friendship with God"
Customer Reviews:
Wholesome & inspiring biography.......2007-09-11
Hollywood doesn't make many movies like this anymore! Richard Todd powerfully portrays the Rev. Peter Marshall in this biographical film that follows Marshall from his humble beginnings as a sea-loving laddie in Scotland to his years of service in America, first as a pastor and then as Senate chaplain.
The film features several of his sermons, including one delivered to the U.S. Naval Academy on December 7, 1941, just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Todd delivers these eloquent messages with zeal and potency. He also shows that Marshall was more than just a good preacher. Long before "seeker-sensitive" became the buzz-word of the day, Marshall wasn't afraid to defy traditions (such as ditching the clerical collar) and try different methods of outreach. Still, his ringing message never wavered, an example that the "felt needs" crowd of today could learn from!
Parents looking for wholesome and character-building entertainment for their family have a gold mine in this story. Issues like humility, yielding to God, patience through trials, godly courtship (illustrated by Marshall's relationship with his wife-to-be Catherine, wonderfully played by Jean Peters), and laying aside sinful habits are woven throughout. There's more Christian content in this Hollywood production than in most "Christian" films! The only minor criticism I would lodge is that the Gospel is never presented as explicitly as I would like.
Although it's an older film and may feel a bit dated (Marshall and his wife are shown sleeping in separate beds!), "A Man Called Peter" is nonetheless an inspiring portrait of a man of faith and character. Highly recommended.
Plenty of sermons with a bit of sickness.......2007-06-02
I saw the movie A MAN CALLED PETER when I was young and recently thought I should own the DVD and listen to the recording of a sermon by Peter Marshall that was a special feature on the DVD. There are plenty of sermons in the movie itself, including a sermon for the cadets at the naval academy in Annapolis on December 7, 1941 delivered before the attack on Pearl Harbor but emphasizing how meaningfully death could become our own world in a way that this world never will be. Peter Marshall was chaplain for the U.S. Senate, where he offered daily prayers that strove to be relevant to the kind of things that happen in Washington, D.C., from 1947 until the heart attack which killed him in 1949. Seeing the movie in a theater as a child, I was impressed by the idea that people who work hard are bound to die young and go to a well-deserved rest. I have certainly not been working hard enough for anything like that to happen to me, but I can appreciate this movie as an intellectual exercise in reflecting the spirit of the times in which the United States became a great power but faced mounting confusions about how to remain one.
On a personal level, Catherine Marshall is a major character in the movie, and she was author of a book that the movie is based on. At the beginning, she is merely a college girl going to church and listening to sermons, but remembering much more than most of us are capable of. That part of the plot reminds me of some themes of the `somebody's miracle' CD which Liz Phair released in 2005. The ironic first song, "leap of innocence," includes the dreadful lines, "I had so many friends in rehab. A couple who practically died. Anyone can tell you were my instrument. He said, I understand you. You want to play me." God and the Marshalls triangulated that theme marvelously.
One of the characters in the movie, a Senator Harvey, thwarts the plans of the timber interests who want to create a few more millionaires by clearing some forests, when he votes against a land bill to save thousands of farms that could have been destroyed by floods in subsequent years. It is nice to know that people making movies in 1955 were smart enough to include a few lines about facing the wind, like the second song on the Liz Phair CD about `wind and the mountain,' where she sings, "You're gonna right another wrong. And sometimes I am inspired. You're gonna raise your hand and say I don't understand. And there are days when you get an answer. There are days when you find your answer."
The movie includes a sermon on Elijah telling the chosen people, "Choose to serve the Lord." A little fire from heaven helped the people at Mt. Carmel make that choice, and sarcastic comments about the 450 prophets of Baal who could not call down fire from heaven certainly helped Americans learn how a super power could act on a good day, when the future seems like nothing but easy cakewalks. We have built an incredibly complex military base for carrying out whatever destructive tasks we can imagine, but have been lacking enough foresight to figure out what we will do when the people we borrowed money from ask us to actually pay for it. As Liz Phair put it:
And the wind that I'm in
Screams on me
Screams on me
Howls around me
Howls around me
And I feel like I am a naked man
I've got nothing and no one
In a stranger's land
And the wind will do me in.
A Man Called Peter.......2007-05-26
Richard Todd played an awesome roll in his portrayal of Dr Peter Marshall. My family and I would recommend this film to anyone who needs to be inspired to go on to bigger and better things in life!
A Man Called Petter.......2007-04-03
This is a very inpirational movie. Knowing it is a true story makes it even more so. It is well done. I watch it over and over. As one of the Special Features, is one of Peter Marshall's actual messages. It is awesome. He truely was one of God's gifts to the world.
Great family film.......2007-04-01
In this day and age where movies use bad grammar and as much foul language as possible, not to mention the sexual inunendos and explicit sex scenes, this movie is truly a treasure. It shows the love that the Marshalls had for each other (without having to see everything that happens between a man and his wife) and sends a powerful message that God is truly in control; no matter what happens in our lives. The movie is excellent for a family night viewing.

Not fairly balanced.......2000-11-02
Great biography but if studying the life of Nixon one will need more research material. The video is not really fairly balanced and is a bit more negative then it has to be.Too much is placed on Watergate and not enough on the positives of his work.
Description
FDR showcases Robert Vaughn's gutsy portrayal of one of the most charismatic leaders of the 20th century, American President- Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This one-man-show takes us through FDR's White House years including the Depression, the steps leading up to WWII, the war years and finally his death in 1944. Robert Vaughn shows us why this president was known as "that man in the White House," scorned by many and admired by most. We see and hear his fireside chats; his controversial packing of the Supreme Court; his personal life with Eleanor and his discreet but definite affair with Lucy Mercer; his courage to break the Neutrality Act; his manipulation of Congress (in order to get the country to have a draft); the Pearl Harbor controversy and the benevolent dictatorship he called the presidency, from 1933-44, which made him the first man in history to be elected to four terms.Robert Vaughn is magnificent as FDR and delivers a fearless performance of this dynamic and controversial world leader.

great flag-waving action movie.......2005-11-06
This movie is by far one of my favorites but you can't take it seriously. In the movie, Chuck's protege "Deke Slater" nabs the terrorist leader Fidal Rasheed by sky-diving out of a stealth fighter over Afganistan and hang-gliding from southern Afganistan to the Indian Ocean in 5 minutes, where a nuclear submarine comes out of nowhere to rescue him. Chuck Norris seems to have forgotten that Afganistan is a landlocked country! The flag-waving (for both America and the great state of Texas) is hilarious. And Chuck Norris tries to take on a Yoda figure role by teaching Deke about using the "mind's eye" to sense his opponents and do things "never thought humanly possible".
SECRET SERVICE SUPREME.......2005-10-22
Long time martial arts hero Chuck Norris looks pretty good for a man in his sixties, but he leaves the real action in this one to his younger comrade, studly Judson Mills. The second PRESIDENT'S MAN in a USA Network made for TV movie, this film follows Norris and his sidekick's attempts to thwart a nuclear attack in Dallas. Aided by his comely Eurasian daughter, JENNIFER TUNG, the boys use some pretty preposterous methods to stop the threat. It's all testosterone, patriotic propaganda, but it works due to the charm of the performers and our inherent fear after the 9/11 attacks.
President's Man A Line in the Sand.......2005-08-03
I love this movie. I have been looking for this movie on dvd ever since I saw it on USA Network. Chuck Norris and Judson Mills make an excellent fighting team. If you want an action movie with lots of martial arts footage, then this movie is for you.

One of the Best Chuck Norris Movies ever.......2005-08-28
This is one of the best Chuck Norris movies I have ever seen. The martial arts in this film was very thrilling. Chuck Norris
works directly for the President. He does a great job on keeping matters confidential, and when it comes to impossible jobs to be done, the President goes directly to Chuck Norris. He also has the task of rescuing the First Lady from terrorists, and then once again, he must face new missions. This is a movie not to be missed. If you like Chuck Norris, you will love this action packed movie. I will definitely buy any Chuck Norris movie I can find.
Oldy but a goody.......2004-05-17
Chuck Norris is getting on in years, and must be eligible for a pension right about now, but if you have even a shred of doubt that the Chuckster still has the moves, look no further than this for proof that he is still THE man when it comes to a bit of US chop socky.
The rest of the movie is pretty standard TV fare, with an unknown guy I've never heard of doing a second rate Norris impression, some 1995 style editing and the kind of sub-standard dialogue you would expect from a TV action movie, which is watchable but not enjoyable.
but this is what makes it so great. this is an unshamedly retro TV movie, not letting story get in the way of the reasonably good action scenes, and having leads give performances that would make Keanu Reeves blush (Chuck Norris excluded naturally)
And of course, Chuck is the reason to watch this movie. He still has the moves, still has the stare, and still has the charisma to make you watch straight to video movies. warning: rent but don't buy this movie, as it probably won't hold past one viewing.

The Real Dubya.......2005-12-01
I liked this film, as it gave me insight into the real Dubya and his upbringing.
Description
His drastic reforms led to the end of his nation as the world knew it. But ultimately, he was undone by his own success. Mikhail Gorbachev is one of the most compelling figures of the 20th century. The son of a mechanic from the Caucasus, his vision to change his nation was shaped by his childhood experiences under Stalin's rule. BIOGRAPHY interviewed the former Soviet Premier at length for this historic program. In it, Gorbachev recounts how he rose through the party ranks without betraying his radical visions for the future. Once in power, however, the changes were swift and sweeping. Extensive footage chronicles the turbulent years of his rule, from the first stirrings of Glasnost to the unsuccessful coup attempt that marked the last gasp of the old, hard-line leadership. And Soviet historians and political experts detail his world-changing legacy. Like no other program, this is a gripping, first-person portrait of one of the most influential men in history.

A Classic.......2000-09-21
Gorbachev will go down in history as a powerful idealist. His accomplishments will be reviewed for many, many years. This biography chronicles his rise to power, and how this power changed our world. The pictures of his early childhood and education are fascinating. They document how a young boy can grow and develop into a world leader with the proper guidance. His achievement in winning the Nobel Peace Prize is his ultimate victory. In a world that needs more idealistic leaders, this video cannot be viewed too often. It is a classic, and that is why I recommend it for any public or private library.
