The fourth Dirty Harry film is a complete embarrassment to memories of the stunning Don Siegel movie that started the franchise. Gratuitous and somehow sleazy, this cop flick finds Eastwood's Harry Callahan searching for a female serial killer (Sondra Locke) who happens to be a vengeful rape victim ridding the world of guys who can't take "no" for an answer. The whole silly Callahan myth--the way he'll just stand in the shadows with his big gun until the bad guys realize they're going to die--almost makes one wonder how Eastwood survived this junk to become an A-list director in his winter years. Best known for the line "Go ahead, make my day." --Tom Keogh

Description

Relentless rogue cop "Dirty Harry" Callahan finds himself chasing a ritualistic killer to a rural Northern California town. When Harry is spinning his wheels, it's his new partner Horace Kind that steers him in the right direction. Together, they race to catch the killer in a head-on collision of good vs. evil.

5 out of 5 stars NOBODY....I MEAN NOBODY!... PUTS KETCHUP ON A HOTDOG!.......2007-07-29

"Sudden Impact" brought one of my favorite icons from the 70's movie world back to the big screen "Dirty Harry Callahan"! This is the forth installment in the series and the best of the sequels to this point! It is a great film for many reasons, one is it has a nice blend of action and self parody. The scenes when Harry goes in the coffee shop that is being robbed and when he chases the bank robber in the retirement bus are certainly done with a little humor in mind. Since there is around 8 years between this and the last sequel it is obvious that Callahan has aged some, but not mellowed! This film is the first film that Clint coined the phrase " Go a head...Make My Day!" Harry can't seem to get through a day without being reamed by his superiors for his methods of keeping our streets safe! The film also has some really nasty, but convincing villains in a bull dyke named Ray(Audrie Neena)and a murderer/rapist/psycho named Mick(Paul Drake), but also I can't help but find it funny that Albert Popwell is in this installment again Lol! He has been in every movie playing a different character the banker robber he says "do you feel lucky" to(Dirty Harry),a pimp who uses Drano to kill one of his "girls(Magnum Force, an informant(The Enforcer) and now Harry's pal(Sudden Impact)! I know there are some who don't care for this film, but is very entertaining and smartly made!I have to watch The Dead Pool again before I can say if that is a better movie. The DVD transfer looks very good.

4 out of 5 stars Whatcha doin', ya pig headed sucka?!!!.......2006-08-23

This was one of my favorite movies from the early 80's. I love most Clint Eastwood movies, especially his Dirty Harry movies. This is probably my 3rd favorite, after Dirty Harry, and The Dead Pool.

This movie is also one of Clint's most savage, and dark Dirty Harry movies.

I highly recommend renting or buying this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars 'Harry' Meets A 'Savage' Woman.......2006-04-23

The fourth in the "Dirty Harry" series, this film features one of the most despicable, ugliest, unlikable, profane, disgusting females I have ever seen on film: "Ray Perkins," played by Audrie Neenan. She is the modern nasty low-life version of the 1945 "Detour" character, "Ann Savage."

Her foul mouth and gutter attitude turned me off so much I never watched this film again until I acquired a profanity filter which shut her up....and least some of her! Then I could enjoy the rest of the movie.

Everywhere "Harry Callahan" (Clint Eastwood) goes, violence immediately follows.....within minutes! It happens so often it's almost laughable but it makes for a fast-moving, entertaining film with a satisfying ending as all the scumbag villains are eliminated one-by-one.

This is a very sophomoric film that appeals to our base instincts.....and connects, sad to say. Most of us like to see these dirtballs get it in the end, and who does it better than Dirty Harry?

2 out of 5 stars Go Ahead and get rid of Sondra Locke and make OUR day (forever) Clint.......2006-03-28

(Two-and-half-stars out of four on normal
rating scale) [Really, the rating may seem
a bit harsh, as I do like Dirty Harry
(more even than the real man behind him,
Clint Eastwood, who by the time I typed
in this review, 2006, has long since sold
out to big brother, unfortunately)

Storyline is good and "Make my Day" scene
is one of best ever in Eastwood film, but
stupid subplot of Locke's character and sis'
rape story saps plot. Albert Popwell back for
fourth consecutive D.H. picture, this time as
'Horace', Callahan's partner. Cute bulldog,
too. Dirty Harry movies are either too long
or short. A Pity... Pat Hingle is good too,
until he's "offed' by some of the worst punks
ever to cross Dirty Harry Callahan!

4 out of 5 stars Fourth film of the series. It's ok, but lacking the Dirty Harry style.......2006-03-12

Sudden Impact was released in 1983 and Clint Eastwood is a little grayer and slower in this film. Still has the Dirty Harry charm but it's the 80s and doesn't have that 70s touch like Magnum Fore, Enforcer, and Dirty Harry. Sondra Locke co-stars with him in this one and her characater is lacking and scary? Dirty Harry is tracking down some killers who raped her sister years ago. Very boring plot. I gave it four starts because I like Eastwood.

Five--count 'em, five--chances to wallow in the shoot-first, ask-questions-later ethos of San Francisco cop Harry Callahan, who became a signature character for actor Clint Eastwood. The first one, Dirty Harry, is the best, a Don Siegel film in which Harry flouts rules about police brutality to capture a serial killer. In Magnum Force he tracks rogue cops and utters his "Do you feel lucky, punk?" speech. In The Enforcer he gets a female partner (future Cagney and Lacy star Tyne Daly). Sudden Impact featured him tracking a female serial killer and offered a new catch phrase: "Go ahead. Make my day." And The Dead Pool, aside from offering a smart little chase involving a radio-controlled model car, brought him face to face with Liam Neeson. You can't ask for much more firepower in one box than this. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-07-28

Plenty of people here have summarized what the film is about, so I won't. I'll try to add something original to the mix, so forgive me if I don't confine myself to describing the film's plot. The popularity of this film cannot be explained without a wider understanding of cultural conditions and sentiments at the time of its release. Dirty Harry, like Death Wish, was a bombshell, as it gave voice to how hundreds of thousands of people were feeling, sentiments people felt and may not have publicly expressed for fear of backlash from the PC movement. In a few sentences, the cultural circumstance referred to was a growing discontent with what was growingly considered to be misguided attempts to solve society's "problems." In the sixties the government gave itself the responsibility to "fix" many problems, from teenage pregnancy to poverty to drug use to discrimination to crime, with social "programs," judicial activism and new legislation. Ironically, ALL of these problems were already rapidly decreasing in the early sixties. Crime was HALF what it was in 1930, even if you don't control for the increase in the population!! Poverty was lessening each and every year. What happened after the social programs of the late sixties and the generation of the welfare state? Well, the crime rate literally exploded. So did teenage pregnancy. Poverty quadrupled. Another thing that happened was the rewriting of law to lessen the punishment of criminals to the result that even the criminals that were arrested and successfully prosecuted often ended right back out on the street in a matter of months to commit even more crimes. People were sick and tired of this crap. Some filmmakers new it, and tapped into this sentiment with wildly popular films like Death Wish, The Stone Killer, and Dirty Harry. An entire genre of "vendetta/revenge/let's take out the human garbage" films was born. Whatever happened to America's real roots, the cowboy? Well here he is, in 1970s San Fran. Harry Callihan is more than a character, he's a representation of a return to common sense, of someone flipping the bird to the higher than thou premption of common sense by lofty third party surrogate policy makers. He is the symbol of a public outcry to give me a break and cut the high minded BS.

5 out of 5 stars 70s Gold.......2007-06-24

I love films like these.Only have the first two though. Hoping for a new box set in the near future with more features.

5 out of 5 stars Husband loved it!.......2007-05-07

They just don't make cop movies like they used to. My favorite part were the 'making of' films for the first three movies. They were narrated by the guy from Dragnet.
Do yourself a favor -- you may find this set cheaper someplace else on the web. But you should buy it here. This was originally my hubbie's Valentine's Day gift. He didn't get it until a month later because I was trying to be cheap. Two other online vendors couldn't deliver (and getting refunds was a nightmare). I ordered it here and three business days later I had it in hand.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent "CLINT".......2007-01-10

Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan has style. All 5 movies watched in a sequence are a treat for action fans. Plots are well set & keep you gripped throughout. Never a dull moment. A must buy for action lovers.

    Product Description

"Dirty" Harry Callahan was one of the first screen characters to embody contemporary fears about crime--and the uncompromising response to it that much of the audience would liked to have seen. Clint Eastwood's laconic rogue cop became an instant screen icon; his catchphrases ("Do you feel lucky?", "Make my day") were and still are endlessly quoted, and he even inspired a futuristic comic-strip counterpart in the person of Judge Dredd. Made at the time when the real "Zodiac" serial killer was terrorising San Francisco, the original Dirty Harry struck a frighteningly realistic note in 1971: aside from Eastwood, director Don Siegel's taught, pacey direction, Lalo Schifrin's nervy jazz score and Andrew Robinson's cackling psycopath "Scorpio" all make a strong impact. Such was the film's success that it gave rise to no less than four sequels, none of which are its equal but all of which get by on the charisma of Eastwood's anti-hero, even when he's increasingly trapped by the character's one-dimensional persona. This five-disc box set contains all the "Harry" movies: Dirty Harry (1971); Magnum Force (1973, with David Soul as a vigilante bike cop); The Enforcer (1976, with Tyne "Lacey" Daly as Harry's new and reluctant partner); Sudden Impact (1983, the weakest of the lot costarring Eastwood's then-partner Sondra Locke) and The Dead Pool (1988, a surprisingly upbeat end to the series).

I love films like these.Only have the first two though. Hoping for a new box set in the near future with more features.

This Dirty Harry collection is a great gift idea. I gave it to my husband for Christmas and he loved it!
