The amazing Jet Li plays a cop whose job keeps him from attending his son's junior kung fu competitions. When sent undercover to infiltrate the gang of a brutal mob boss, his arrest--part of his cover story--exposes his son to humiliation in school. Meanwhile, his wife falls deeper into illness. The Enforcer is a classic Hong Kong blend of dazzling kung fu action and outrageously sentimental subplots. Yet as silly as some situations may seem (and let's be honest, they aren't any more ridiculous than your average Sly Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger movie), they're never boring, and when the spectacular fights begin it doesn't matter--Jet Li's stunning skill and natural charisma make him magnetic. Anita Mui, costarring as a police detective tracking Li down, gets to do her share of fighting as well. In the finale, father and son team up for a battle as funny as it is spectacular. If you only know Jet Li from Lethal Weapon 4, you owe it to yourself to check out his authentic Hong Kong work, where the stunts are jaw-dropping and the special effects, while not always perfectly realistic, are bursts of pure imagination. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars not my favorite jet li movie.......2007-08-22

The original title of this film "My Father is a Hero" describes it best. The movie is about Jet Li playing a father, who is sent undercover on a top secret mission to infiltrate a mob boss - who is one very cold & cynical guy. The mission is so secret, not even his wife and son are informed, and it breaks the heart of his son (who is obviously very close to his father in this film). His wife dies of illness while away, and he fears his son is in just as much danger, when he comes to H.K. looking for his father and also becomes entangled with the mob boss. There are plenty of touching scenes in the film, mostly about family and loss, but leave it to poor English dubbing to ruin the moments.

As with most Jet Li films, you can expect a good deal of action with this one. And unlike his American films, you can expect even more action and longer fights. The only scene that really amazed me was the finale, lasting 7 minutes where Jet Li takes on the boss and his men on the inside of a large boat. The action kind of gets ruined once his son comes in and father uses him as a yo-yo on a rope to take out the guys. Its quite funny looking and obviously totally unrealistic.

The movie didn't flow too well for me, as it proceeds from action to tender moments, back and forth. Just didn't feel right in this film. I might have enjoyed it a little more if the dubbing wasn't so poor. Not a very exciting movie oveall except for some decent action from Li.

3 out of 5 stars Some of these JET LI THE COLLECTION movies are really pushing the limits of my patience.......2006-03-07

I remember when the dubbed voices were somewhat enjoyable, now video game companies do a better job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With that being said, this movie is really bad, very little fight scenes early on, and too many stupid things that happen in what should be life and death situations. Still you can't go wrong with iron monkey vs. jet li. The whole coat fighting with jet just blew me away. I didn't like thwe little kids fight scenes, but it wasn't his fault, the wire work was just way overdone. So overall a pretty stupid movie with outstanding fightscenes, even if they are limited. This movie definitely needs to be viewed in the chinese version though.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to forget.......2004-06-06

Another Miramax chopped up version of a Hong Kong film. The story is half decent, and the action exceptable, but this movie is not hard to forget.

1 out of 5 stars Dimension destroy another mediocre release.......2003-03-26

This is a terrible release of a terrible movie!

For those fans who have watched Jet's movie career go from the sensational Shaolin Temple and Once Upon a Time in China series, it was this movie (along with the Defender) that marked the beginning in Jet's dramatic decline.

This movie is actually called My Father is a Hero, it has been dubbed and cut for American audiences. It is no wonder that many martial arts films are considered plotless and characterless when the US distributors cut them so only action is left!!

The martial arts action is way below par, the kid is more annoying than Macauley Kulkin, and the bad guy's include Ngai Sing, Ken Lo and Yu Rong Guang! These are some great martial artists and the encounter with Jet should have been breath-taking, but there are too many wires and it's a limp finale overall.

buy the asian import of My Father is a Hero, rather than support these butchered US releases. Or even better buy Jet's classic movies (most things pre-1994) + and the Hong kong edition of Fist of Legend

Recognizing Jet Li's rising popularity in the United States--popularity spurred on by his roles in Lethal Weapon 4 and Romeo Must Die--Dimension Home Video has released four of his Hong Kong films as a package. The weakest of them is The Defender, in which Li plays a crack bodyguard from mainland China who is appointed to protect a witness to a killing in Hong Kong. Though the movie has its share of action, Li's dour character gives him little room to display the buoyant charisma that's made him such an international star. Fortunately, the other three films more than make up for it. In The Defender, Li is a cop who goes deep undercover, becoming a noted criminal and distressing his young son, who doesn't know that his father is on a mission. This movie is a prime example of how Hong Kong movies can fuse over-the-top sentimentality with jaw-dropping kung-fu spectacle--the climactic fight scene, in which father and son work together to defeat a cadre of villains, is both hilariously absurd and dazzlingly acrobatic.

Twin Warriors is also an amazing compendium of kung-fu action, also featuring the skills of Michelle Yeoh (sometimes known as Michelle Khan, costar of Jackie Chan's Supercop and the James Bond flick Tomorrow Never Dies). This epic culminates in the development of the discipline of Tai Chi, but it's far from a history lesson--Li's character develops this new martial art to defeat his oldest friend, who's become a corrupt warlord. Finally, there's Fist of Legend, another historical epic and one of Li's best movies. A superior script and direction support an intense performance from Li, who plays the head of a martial arts school caught up in political intrigue with the Japanese. But having a stronger plot doesn't mean the movie skimps on action; on the contrary, the fight scenes have a greater emotional impact. All in all, an excellent introduction to Jet Li, one of the world's most admired action heroes. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars original is better.......2006-02-05

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting JET Li movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way REST OF THE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

1 out of 5 stars DUBBED!!!!NO Subtitles.......2005-08-28

I will first and foremost explain the frustration of DUBBED movies. The films original format is not on this DVD. It takes away from the movie & actors. It should have been left in it's original sound format. Any real movie enthusiast frowns upon DUBBED. The dubbed voices are horrible, and it takes from the Kung-fu, and the plotline.

5 out of 5 stars These are Dubbed, but still the best.......2005-05-20

Yes, it is correct that these are dubbed in English and have new English titles. But who cares? What the title and language is in don't have nothing to do with Jet Li and the film. These still are considered to be Jet Li's best films, or if not the best, some of the Top 10 by far.

I have watched the HK films of each of these movies, that just have English Subtitles. But like many millions of people, I really don't like watching a movie and trying to read it at the same time. It takes attention off of watching the action, with having to read whats said. I still love the regular movies, don't get me wronge. But I praise for these movies Dubbed in English. I love it. Cause now I can watch the movie 100% without having to read it. Yes, some of the orginal langauge after dubbed in English was slightly changed to say different stuff. But still yet, its still very good movies, just awesome movies.

So, to all those that just wanna see the films and love Jet Li, these are very worth getting and collecting. I love having them all in a Collection Set, instead of having each seprate. I believe makes it much easier and more organized with these sets. And if you love collection Jet Li sets, I would very reccommend getting along with this Once Upon a Time in China 1, 2, & 3 collection set also.

2 out of 5 stars ALL DUBBED! aaugh.......2002-12-18

ALl 4 movies in this set are dubbed in English. I was horribly disappointed. Dont make the same mistake I did. Find the dubbed ones.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2002-10-11

Jet Li is Awesome. Pretty much that sums it up. All four movies are good with Fist of Legand rising to the top. By far, the best martial arts movie I have ever seen. Fist of Legand, a remake of Bruce Lee's classic Chinese Connection, is truly remarkable. The story line was adapted from Chinese connction with a few added plot lines. The action is fluent and runs smoothly throughout the movie. The classic dojo fight where Chen fights the whole school at once was done perfectly. And the end fight scene is one of the best I've seen. It was amazing!
Then, my second favorite of this collection would have to be Twin Warriors. A truly outstanding traditional chinese Wire Fu masterpiece. The action throughout is incredible mixed with light humor. And, like Fist of Legand, the end fight scene was remarkable.
Next, I would say would be the Enforcer, although when I first saw it as a subtitled movie it was called Father is Hero. This one incorporates a little bit of a darker story line dealing with the deep undercover work of Li's character. The fight scenes are good, but do not really dazzle until the end. Overall it's not a bad flick for any Jet Li fan.
Now the reason I give this collection 4 stars is due to the fact that it has the Defender in it. It tried to be a story movie first and an action movie second, but in my opinion it didn't do that well of a job. The action is weak throughout and ends weak. Definately not one of my favorite movies, but I watch it every once in a while. A Jet Li fan can appreciate this movie but it probably will never make the top of anybody's list
