4 out of 5 stars Great movie, average HD performance.......2007-09-05

I love this movie, but it doesn't seem like it looks significantly better than it did on DVD. Worth having if you don't already own it on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars good video, great audio.......2007-08-12

This disk has very good (above average) video transfer, but what really shines is its Chinese uncompressed PCM audio track. After watching the movie, I long for Chinese traditional music on blu-ray. Listen to the full sound track of "Ambush From All/Ten Sides" in uncompressed PCM will be heavenly.

Movie-wise, I like the art directions and the special effects. But some of the actors appear to be rather wooden (the barber and Chow's pal, for example). I also found this movie isn't as funny as I hoped it to be.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-ray Goodness.......2007-05-15

I've got this movie on DVD, UMD, and now Blu-ray. I'll leave IMDB to tell you about the movie.

I don't have an HD TV (don't ask), so I can't really comment on the picture quality. I'm not an audiophile, so I can't really comment on the sound quality (although on DD5.1 it sounds just fine).

Go ahead and pick it up!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Action Movie.......2007-05-12

This is definitely one of the better action movies I have seen in a long time. The comedy in the movie is also worth a watch. Stephen Chow tells a great story with absolutely amazing special effects. I have watched this movie many times and watching it on Blu-Ray is an experience in itself.
From the opening sequence, you are drawn to the plot and Stephen's portrayal of his character is first-class. His tribute to Bruce lee is evident throughout the film.
This is definitely a MUST WATCH for all!

5 out of 5 stars great addition to my blu-ray collection.......2007-03-18

Didn't expect much from single layer 25 gig mpeg-2 with extras, but I was totally impressed w/ the transfer. Great movie to add to my ever growing collection.

Joseph Heller's novel was one of the seminal literary events of the 1960s, but Mike Nichols's film ultimately proved too literal in its attempt to bring Heller's fragmented fiction to the screen. Still, Nichols, who made this on the heels of The Graduate, seemed the ideal candidate to tackle this Buck Henry adaptation. The story deals with bomber pilot Yossarian (Alan Arkin), who has flown enough missions to get out of World War II but can't because the number of missions needed for discharge keeps getting raised. The satire and absurdity of Heller's book get lost in Nichols's effort to give screen time to the members of his all-star cast, which includes Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Richard Benjamin, and Martin Sheen, among others. --Marshall Fine

weather conditions have improved. you will have no trouble seeing the target. of course that means they will have no trouble seeing you. anyone who wants out of combat duty is not crazy. at 5 cents a piece, and clear profit of 2 cents an egg. oranges, olive oil, blankets. what will be good for M&M enterprises will be good for the country. cotton is a particularly liquid commodity. we'll trade for it. silk. a hell of a good deal in Alexandria.

the syndicate is organized by an acting mess officer named Milo who trades his unit's supplies for other commodities. in one scene, the home airfield is being destroyed by the unit's own bombers. Milo had made a deal with Germans who would buy Milo's oversupply of indian cotton in exchange for making it appear that the Germans successfully attacked the US base. the syndicate theme extends to silk parachutes stolen and sold by the syndicate and the airplane's morophine has been sold. as one prostitute says "everyone works for Milo."

Capt major is promoted to squadron commander--rank of major. Maj Major will only see people in his office when he is not there. if he is in his office, he wants the sgt to ask people to wait until he is not there. he does not want the sgt to enter his office unless he is not in and then the sgt should do whatever needs to be done. comedy writing in 1970 did not have to be funny, the writers merely had to pretend it was funny.

Catch-22 principle is stated by an old Italian woman in the ruined brothel: "they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing."

3 out of 5 stars "Help him, help him" "Help who?".......2007-06-23

The story is mostly flashback on flashback. The basic story is of Capt. John Yossarian (Alan Arkin), World War II bombardier, who wants to get out of the war. However it gets real complicated with many characters that are players by a bevy of character actors. There is plenty of subtle comedy mixed with some scenes that can make you sick.

A lot of what looks like disjointed and irrelevant scenes with becomes one cohesive story by the end. Even the frontal nudity scene fits. If you like this sort of film you should watch "Jacob's Latter."

With all the effort and great filming this film still has no exceptional or socially meaningful message. Luckily the film is complete and we can understand what is being cut out of TV versions.

My favorite part was the part where when Yossarian first sees Luciana (Olimpia Carlisi) in white walking by and they play "Also sprach Zarathustra" Written by Richard Strauss

5 out of 5 stars You either Love it or Hate it..........2007-05-28

Sitting down to watch Catch-22 after finishing the novel, I was curious how the movie was going to work. The anti-war comedy novel is filled with many more characters, and storylines, than what would feasibly fit into a feature length movie. Understanding this, I was thoroughly impressed with the liberties that were taken with the story to make it into a movie. Furthermore, I had such a comical picture of Yossarian in my head after finishing the book, I thought that the theatrical representation of the main character would be severely lacking and ruin the movie. I couldn't have been more wrong. Watching Alan Arkin bring Yossarian to life was a treat and a pleasure to watch.

As far as the cinematography of the film, there are some instances where the sound quality is not the best when character dialog is set over the roar of airplane engines. But there sure are some great film moments. That opening sequence is amazing and the long single take opening on Yossarian is just something that you typically don't see in today's movies.

Some love it and some hate it. I subscribe to the former group, and I believe this is one of the best book to movie adaptations that I've ever seen. A must have for your DVD collection.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the book.......2007-02-19

But then again, how could it be? The title of the book itself has become synonomous with the "no win" situation you often get involved in when dealing with the government or the military. The background Heller wrote into the book makes the story that much more interesting and sharpens the idea behind it.

The movie makes an effort to follow the book, but it is hard to do and I think it is not so much the fault of the director or the cast as it is the fact that some books just don't translate well into film. This is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars An Indictment for the Ages.......2007-02-10

The dystopia that is Catch-22 comes to life in this film. The cinematography is great and the story arch is very nicely envisioned through flashback narratives that prove affective in use. My reason for writing this review, however, is to quell the notion that the film isn't true to the text.

A first reader of Catch-22 will likely find humor in the fantastical aspects of the novel. Actually, everyone who has read the book will attest to the fact that the humor is in the tone and presentation of it; yet, to be able to do so, one has to always recognize that the humor is a product of a far-fetched reality. Clearly, this humor, which is often found at the sentence level, is lost when put to screen.

Once the surface of the novel is scratched, a new text emerges, and this is what comes to life in this film adaptation. The core of the novel is layed bare in this film, and to not recongize this requires a deeper read.

I don't want to take away from the humor of the novel. In viewing this film, a lover of Catch-22 will further recognize how dynamic a book Joseph Heller actually gave us. To laugh at the situations, characters, and overall logic while recognizing the social commentary that pervades each character-based chapter is the real testament to the novel's worth.

The novel is laced with humor, but to move beyond our own personal first encounters with Catch-22 will be the factor proves the story one for the ages. It isn't the humor that gets us every time; it's the glaring reality of faulty logic that continues to replicate itself from war to war. Catch-22 plays to that eternal theme and should be viewed with this in mind.

In our unflinching acceptance of Heller's wit, Mike Nichols gets us to flinch. I, for one, think he should be accredited for doing so.

Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier in World War II, enjoyed a Hollywood acting career after the fight. In this 1955 autobiographical film, however, he plays himself re-creating his own actions and movements in key battles. As strange as this project might have seemed to him at the time, the results are pretty impressive. The film, despite a flat script, is really a pretty good war drama about Murphy and his buddies making their way from North Africa to Berlin. --Tom Keogh

Delivered better than expected and packaged very well. Item got here sooner that promised. Excellent seller and look forward doing business again.

5 out of 5 stars The human side of war.......2007-08-21

This book was very interesting as it describes his entire Army career from North Africa to southern France. It is amazing on how many times he was wounded and barely escaped death from near misses (mortar round landing next to his foot). His courage and ability to survive multiple campaigns definitely makes every one of his awards justly earned and well deserved. Even with is wounds and illnesses, he was able to quickly return to the front line and serve with his fellow front line soldiers.

His camaraderie and loyalty to his squad and platoon is shared through survival and trust. The attrition rate of soldiers in his company was very high, a fact that is somewhat understated in official military records. Official U.S. military records cited in most history books often report those killed in action, but not those who died from accidents or disease. After reading different history books which cite official combat casualties and comparing the first hand accounts of Audie Murphy, it is clear who is telling the truth. The ground soldier states the way it is, the official reports tend to show only a portion of the casualties. Comparing the number of replacements received in a unit versus their combat casualties also paints a better picture of how deadly frontline duty is, from both the enemy and disease. Beyond the Beachhead (about the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy) also describes the high replacement rate for the division.

There are books about soldiers who have received the Medal of Honor, but they only describe that one event where the soldier earned recognition for their valor. This book tells the whole story, from the daily mundane preparation for duty to the fear and worries of watching your battle brothers fall. Very few of the original soldiers in his squad lived to see the end of the war after serving two years in three different campaigns.

The book goes into a lot more detail than the movie as the movie also changed and compressed different events for time. The human side of the war and the personal emotional price paid is described in more detail here. Every friend lost was a part of him that died too.

Good book to add to the collection.

5 out of 5 stars War is Hell.......2007-08-04

Audie Murphy , my what a great american ,such courageand above all, unconcern for self, love of his family and fellow man and his homeland.
A truly dedicted person to what ever tasked was give to him.
Handsome , youthful , tough , made not be reconized as a great actor , but he puts everything into it, he's got and his natural personality flows making him stand with some of the greats. . Every boy / man should see this movie before he takes a coommittment for his country. The movie is worth putting in your library , its not the modern fake action commando type , but it has a real atmosphere of the guts it takes to be an hero and live to tell.
Giving more respect to our young soldiers of to day who give there lives for freedom. Good movie.
Luddy

5 out of 5 stars A Real American Hero.......2007-07-18

This is an incredible movie. The story of a true American Hero. The fact that it is Audie Murphy's story ensured that it didn't get the "Hollywood Treatment" and is a factual retelling. Unique, and awe inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Triumph of Effort and Courage.......2007-06-02

Murphy was perhaps the greatest citizen soldier ever. Today, his memory stands as a valuable lesson not only to the American youth, but also for the world as a whole.

Read this book if you wish to have any idea what real men are capable of.

Amazon.com essential video

This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions.

What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs.

High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A reverse hero quest.......2007-08-31

When this film first came out in '68 I found it unwatchable. I thought that it was mind-less, plot-less eye candy. Now, after nearly four decades I finally get it- this is a reverse hero quest.

You have old/young Fred, captain of his magical vessel, voyaging to our world in a desperate search for help. He comes from the unearthly paradise of Pepperland (the paradise of the Devas) which has been treacherously conquered by the Blue Meanies (Asuras.) He finds the earthly manifestations of the champions of his realm (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) on our earth in the form of...the Beatles. Together they voyage back across the seas that separate the two planes (including the Sea of Monsters.) Once they have won their way back, they use the power of music to restore the land through joy and love. That's the twist- in a traditional tale it would be a hero from earth who traveled to the supernatural realms to win a boon for mankind, while here it is a hero from the otherworld that traveled here for help. That's also kind of neat- the angelic coming to us for help for a change.

Perhaps now that our own world is so completely overrun with Blue Meanies Pepperland might send us help in our time of need. It would make an interesting sequel.

The restoration of this film is incredible. It is a visual feast for the eyes with its vivid, intricate, original artwork- and the sound could not be better. Together they make perfect alchemy.

5 out of 5 stars The Beatles in their psychedellic colorful animated best!.......2007-08-25

I saw this movie for the first time when it came out as I was growing up. So I decdided to plunk down my money to purchase my copy. It was great to relive the animated treasure that Yellow Submarine was known for nearly 40 years ago. The music, and those sinister Blue Meanies!!! Enjoyed every minute of it! I think you already know the voices in the movie are NOT the Beatles but the Fab Four are featured in the closing minutes! I just wish the animated Beatles TV series was on DVD! You will enjoy Yellow Submarine and watch out for the Meanies!!

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Contribution To The World Of Animation.......2007-08-18

I remember seeing this movie when it first came out, when I was eight. I had seen part of it on network TV in the mid-seventies, and again at a college film night in '77. I figured it was a time to step into the time machine.

Actually, the animation is what earned this five stars. The plot rambles, and at times seems to be a showcase for either the creative animation or the Beatles music. For example, where did an animated video of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" fit in the story?

Additionally, it gave opportunity to introduce children to the themes of drugs and eastern mysticism, with some possible sexual references (was the finger of the flying hand getting stuck in the letter "o" several times just humorous cartooning, or was it an entendre, as my dad suggested?). Thus, even a G-rating doesn't mean it's wholesome for children.

There is a lot of good quality English humor in here. The video added the segment with the song "Hey, Bulldog" (my all-time favorite Beatles song, by the way), which seems like it was cut from the movie. Again, the animation was unique and creative. Kids would like it, though as I always say, parents need to be present.

Unfortunately, even 90 minutes seemed too long with the plot (and implausibilities) in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Animated Beatles is Timeless........2007-07-24

Although the animation is old style, the whole movie makes me feel great. Especially the ending. I saw the movie when it first came out, and people were leaving the theatre singing "All Together Now." -- Sam Yulish, author of "Where Have All the Hippies Gone" and "The Hesitant Psychic and Other Starnge Stories."

4 out of 5 stars Apple and the out of print UA films........2007-07-21

Why Yellow Submarine is out of print is anyones guess.
Can you say AL BRODAX?
It's not particularly entertaining but my seven year old son loves it
and best yet is that he learned several Beatle songs from it.
Besides, the trailer is worth the asking price.
The 5.1 mix is very good as is the film transfer.
Go ahead and buy it already.
You know you want to.

Product Description

A devastating story of war and a generation destroyed. In 1914 a group of German schoolboys, idealistic and inflamed with youthful patriotism, set off to fight in the "glorious" war. During their brutal basic training disenchantment begins; then, boarding a train for the front, they see the wounded being rushed back to hospitals. They begin to grasp the grim reality of war.

On their first night in action they come under heavy attack. In the trenches, they begin to fall. Their youth is stripped away by the violence, and the boys become as sullen as veterans.

When Paul (Richard Thomas) shoots a Frenchman and watches him die, he realizes the futility of the war. Wounded, he returns home to a different world, a place where he cannot fit in. Sent back into battle, he meets destiny on a day when the German High Command Communiqu states simply, All Quiet On The Western Front.

Taken from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front is a devastating portrait by Delbert Mann (Desire Under the Elms, Marty) of a small group of German soldiers throughout the World War I.

The star-studded cast is headed by Richard Thomas (The Waltons) as Paul Baumer, and includes such award-winning actors as Ernest Borgnine, Ian Holm, and Patricia Neal. As both narrator and star, Thomas occasionally seems to reincarnate his familiar John-Boy persona, but creates a character that has many more levels than that television alter ego. Watching Paul as he watches all of his high school buddies die is a highly emotional experience. He returns to his home a different person, conflicted in his feelings about the Army and war, evolving from an idealistic schoolboy to a fearful and humble veteran.

The scenery and costuming in this period piece are well done, and surely contributed to its winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Made for TV. Also contributing to the greatness of the film are the exceptional cinematography and special effects that, while realistically gruesome, truly emphasize the horrors of war. --Zachary Lively

5 out of 5 stars Great job, from 1979.......2007-09-12

This movie is very well done. I understand it was shot in the then East Germany or maybe Poland (?). Uniforms are correct, and it follows the book plotline pretty well.
It doesn't get the critical reviews that the 1930s film does, but I think that may be due to the wide acclaim that old classic has - and maybe due to some effects like the 1979 version being in color whilst the book never mentions colors - in fact, one can almost feel that era was all gray or black & white (and the 1939 film follows that theme, by necessity).

I think this film should be better known than it is, especially with some of the re-newed interest in the Great War after so long being overshadowed by WW2 and Vietnam...but understand, the book is not a happy one - its about hopelessness. This film version 'almost/sort of' tries to sidestep that, which is really impossible given the theme of the original book.
I wonder if it will ever be filmed again ??

5 out of 5 stars Great War Film!.......2007-05-25

This is one of the best war films ever made. I've seen the first version also. This film is an improvement over the original although the original was done well with what they had back in early years of film. What really makes this war film great is that it doesn't glorify war at all but shows you the death and destruction of war. This film should be mandatory in all high schools! The book is very good also. The book is more descriptive than the movie. What happens to Paul in this film is happening to our young men and women in Iraq right now!!

1 out of 5 stars The "Johnboy" version of AQWF is truly awful.......2007-05-01

This film might be okay for the general public or high school classroom, but this film brings almost nothing to the table for WWI buffs or lovers of the novel. It's hard to mention anything good about this film other than the fact that it is not as dated as the original film and is also in color.

Earnest Borgnine's casting as Kat is simply laughable. The boys' mentor in the trenches, the "old man," was "old" only in comparison to the teen-aged boys who surrounded him. The battle scenes do not inspire fear or horror. Equipment, uniforms, and sets are inaccurate and "made for TV quality" at best. The acting is wooden and hallow.

This film is a waste of time and is scornfully referred to as "the Johnboy version" by WWI buffs. It is universally reviled.

4 out of 5 stars All Quiet on the Western Front.......2007-01-18

Great war documentary of WWI, there is very little available that shows this period in history on the front, but this one is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars ALL QUIT ON THE WESTERN FRONT.......2007-01-17

I really enjoyed this movie. Not the typical "John Boy" movie. I have not seen the original, although I have recently purchased it. I will be able to make a better comparison once I have seen it. By itself, however, it holds it's own.

This big, boisterous adventure is more inspired by than based on Rudyard Kipling's famous poem. Legendary screenwriters Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur have fashioned a rousing Hollywood movie full of high adventure, knockabout comedy, and old-fashioned male bonding. And old-fashioned it is: the trio of British officers and best friends who form the core of the film are a 19th-century three musketeers in India, threatened by the interventions of a woman who means to marry the dashing Ballantine (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.). Blustery commander MacChesney (Victor McLaglen) schemes to keep Ballantine in the army while his second in command, the treasure-hunting Cutter (Cary Grant in a hopelessly mugging comic performance), continues searching for his elusive mother lode, but all their plans are thrown into chaos when the rise of the bloodthirsty Thugs threaten Britannia's soldiers. Sam Jaffe takes up the rear guard in turban, loin, and full-body make-up as the titular Gunga Din, the loyal water carrier who dreams of becoming a soldier. Bombastically chauvinist and naively imperialist, the film is bound to rub some people wrong, but Stevens creates a thrilling spectacle in the grand Hollywood mold, a handsome, exciting classic comic adventure that helped make 1939 Hollywood's grandest year. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Most Heroes Are Never Heard From.......2007-09-09

I can say nothing to truly describe this classic movie that has not already been said. Even in the horrors of war, a sense of humor has to be in place. Gary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Victor McLaglen were superb in their roles, of course. Sam Jaffe's role as Gunga Din was a small almost insignificant part portraying a want-a-be soldier, who could not seam to hold his own wits. However, when the need arose, Din proved his worth as good or better than the best. I'm glad I got the DVD so that I could take the time to see it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Gunga Din revisited.......2007-02-23

Although made in 1939 in California, many cinema goers thought the film was made on location in India. George Stevens, the director was a master of his time.

After seeing the film, listen to the excellent comentary about the making of the film. The three stars are almost outshone by Sam Jaffee who plays Gunga Din, and he plays it wonderfully.

This is another example of the quality of hits Hollywood produced in 1939, the golden year in American Cinema.

5 out of 5 stars Gunga Din -- the first Indiana Jones movie.......2007-02-07

Gunga Din is one of those under rated films of the late 1930s that had a huge influence on later films. Both the Beatles Help and later Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom used Gunga Din as a model. But Gunga Din has the ability to combine pathos and humor in a way that both later films failed, and in the end, serves as one of my favorite action films.
While it does not have the remarkable special effects of Temple of Doom, Gunga Din gives us characters that are richer and in some way significantly more human. Both Douglas Fairbanks and Cary Grant serve as early versions of Harrison Ford.
We even get some similar humor -- especially in dealing with elephants -- and similar scenery.
I tend to watch Gunga Din after I have watched Temple of Doom. They make a great double feature.

5 out of 5 stars great cast for a great story.......2007-01-19

just a plain ole good movie with a great cast. even Sam Jaffe made up looked like a Hindu peasant.

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Masterpiece.......2007-01-12

Few movie watchers realize there were more classics from 1939 than just "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz."

This movie is a beautiful blend of adventure, suspense, and humor. There is great chemistry between Gary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., which are the most enjoyable segments of the movie. However, Gary Grant once again steals the show with his expressions and overall performance. It still amazes me that he never was awarded an Oscar for best actor.

The final scenes with Sam Jaffe (Gunga Din) are very moving and climax a well scripted classic.

Tchaikovsky's timeless Yuletide ballet is presented in an all-new movie version with as much eloquence as one would find in a live stage production. Replete with gorgeous costumes and scenery, George Balanchine's production, adapted by Peter Martins, features the New York City Ballet with narration by Kevin Kline. From the moment the Nutcracker prince winds toymaker Drosselmeier's life-sized dolls, viewers are ushered into the captivating story of a little girl's Christmas Eve fantasy of beauty, magic, and sugarplums. While several versions of this beloved tale are available in video, this one is distinguished for the magnificent performances of a large cast of young ballet dancers from the School of American Ballet. While Culkin lends his star-studded name, that is all he lends in what is mostly a wooden performance (he often appears on the sidelines looking quite blasé and detached). More deserving accolades go to Jessica Lynn Cohen as Marie, whose genuineness never wanes and dance steps never falter. Bart Robinson Cook is wonderful as the playful Herr Drosselmeier, and Darci Kistler is the graceful Sugarplum Fairy. Mostly this film belongs to children--both on the stage and in the audience. What is lacking in spontaneous energy of live theater is made up for in a perfectly polished performance. The only thing missing is the well-earned applause. --Lynn Gibson

3 out of 5 stars It's good but the greatest Nutcracker I've seen was Baryishnikov's ABT.......2007-06-30

Had I not seen the American Ballet Theatre Nutcracker with Baryishnikov dancing and choreographing, I would probably have given this one 4 stars. The Balanchine Nurcracker is pretty: Cute children, exquisite costumes, nice props, artistic scenery. But the ABT version is just marvelous. I've been to dozens and dozens of ballet performances and seen others on TV, but the Baryishnikov Nutcracker is the best ballet performance I've ever seen. The scene where the Nutcracker battles the mice is particularly superb.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for the kids to watch.......2007-04-29

Treat your kids at Christmastime to good music and performance.

    3 out of 5 stars For Children.......2007-04-26

This performance might be suitable for children. I was only able to watch the first act. There was no ballet. It was just the children running and jumping around. Even if it is dated, I think the version with Baryshnikov is the best.Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker / Baryshnikov, Kirkland, Charmoli

5 out of 5 stars It is true magic.......2007-04-25

The story of the Nutcracker Prince is a very enchanting story. The first time i saw this movie i was in the fourth grade, and now that i have it on DVD i can watch it anytime i want to. The movie is really about Clara (Megan Follows) who is given a nutcracker by her Uncle Drosselmier. The nutcracker is really his son Hans (Keifer Southerland), transformed by a bite by the mousequeen. It is a beautiful story and the characters are memorable.

A beautiful production made for the camera! Wonderful detail. McCauley Caulkin was "Nutcracker."

The hypocrisy of the U.S. government is powerfully scrutinized in Distorted Morality, a scathing thesis presented by renowned scholar Noam Chomsky. Speaking before an intimate audience at Harvard University on February 6, 2002, Chomsky sets fair and logical parameters to his thesis (namely, we are all hypocrites and, for the purposes of debate, the U.S. government should always be given benefit of the doubt) before outlining, with academic precision and citation of real history (as opposed to biased written history), the reasons why America's post-9/11 war on terror is a logical impossibility.

This, according to Chomsky's carefully supported analysis, is because the U.S. government has been, and continues to be, a major supporter of state-supported terrorism, favoring retaliatory or preemptive aggression over mediation in the world court, and avoiding accountability by excluding itself from the globally accepted definition of terrorism. (To underscore his point, Chomsky repeatedly volunteers his sources, inviting scrutiny at every turn.) With an additional hour-long Q&A session (in some ways more compelling, since it offers Chomsky's response to opposing viewpoints), Distorted Morality deserves the widest possible audience. In the short period between Chomsky's Harvard speech and the start of America's war against Iraq in March 2003, Chomsky's thesis has attained the chilling status of prophesy. Inevitably, Chomsky will be labeled anti-American, but at least his morality is crystal clear, immune to the obfuscation of politics and mainstream news. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better!.......2007-03-09

The delivery of the video was great, but the content of the video was not that good to me. Which has nothing to do with the seller. I just expected more from Mr. Chomsky, maybe my next purchase of him will be better hopefully.

    5 out of 5 stars double standard.......2007-01-09

Chomsky, in his usual dry oratory, gives an undeniably obvious, yet well documented, talk about the American double standard. While espousing anti-terrorism as a thesis, American actions undeniably give wintess to our status as the worst of the terroris states. We are doing what we say we detest, and then use the media to disway the American public with Orwellian doublespeak. Not a speech for the ultra-indoctrinated closed-minded person. this should be viewed by citizens with a critical eye on American government and the real picture in the mirror.

    1 out of 5 stars boring.......2007-01-04

He is a great read, in sightful but a terrible speaker and not very photogenic. If it helps you to see the speaker to get what he is saying then perhaps this is for you.

2 out of 5 stars Noam Chomsky - Distorted Morality: America's War on Terror?.......2006-08-25

Could fall asleep easily. Reminds me of poly. sci. 101
The Q & A session in the end is good.

5 out of 5 stars Found in Translation.......2006-08-14

This Noam Chomsky speech on DVD is, as usual, enlightening. Mr Chomsky documents the facts, the truths, and his knowledge of terrorism researched over the past years. This speech and the bonus interview with the Harvard audience all point out to to us how easily manipulated each of us are when we passively "believe" what we are told by our government, rather than seeking to "know" the facts (or simply ask, "wait, is that statement true?"). Mr Chomsky explains patiently, that facts are important. Words and meaning cannot be negotiated by idealogical and political spinners.
