mikey h.......2007-08-03
Completely enjoyed Daniel Craig's performance The storyline holds your interest with a twist for the solution of the question asked I would recommend this movie very highly
Great early Daniel Craig movie!!!!.......2007-05-20
I got the movie mostly because of Daniel Craig but it was a good movie, the ending was slightly disappointing but overall worth the time to watch.
For Daniel Craig Fans Only.......2007-05-08
Take good looking actors, add an incoherent script, throw in a handful of picturesque Euro locations and you have "Obsession". This film is recommended only for those who wish to have a complete Daniel Craig collection, albeit a bizarre addition to the library.
This film's worst offense is that it is boring, deadly dull despite a capable cast. The story is riddled with jaw dropping inconsistencies and the kind of stupidity one associates with Lifetime movies. For instance, Daniel Craig's character is supposedly from Zimbabwe, yet his accent is from Kansas not Rhodesia. WTF? Even DiCaprio was able to carry off a credible Rhodie accent in Blood Diamond.
If you simply must own every movie that Daniel Craig ever made then this will be $6.99 well spent. Otherwise, give this film a wide berth and in the unlikely event that you are invited over to a friend's house to watch this insult to your intelligence then you would be well advised to fabricate any excuse, however farfetched, to avoid wasting 110 minutes of your life.
A great start... (SPOILER).......2007-03-18
... but a scenario that takes too many turns, and the story finally gets lost. I must say the beginning is intriguing and there are some very goods scenes and parts but the whole is disjointed and you don't quite get the point of the entire film. The jacket says that Craig's character is obsessed by his grandmother's death. I wouldn't call that "obsession". He is just trying to make sense of events that took place in his youth and were quite "intense." It makes sense. He is investigating his own past; I don't find that obsessive. The title "obsession" probably refers to the extreme passion he and another man - French actor Charles Berling whose character I found truly boring and bland in comparison to Craig's white Zimbabwean intense personality - have for a woman. She may be wonderful and beautiful and all; it still does not seem quite believable that two intelligent and powerful guys get themselves taken for a ride by her, like they do for quite a long (waaaayyyy too long in the movie, that's where it looses the attention of the viewer) period of time... I don't get it.
The annoying part is that the movie had amazing components and characters at the beginning but the script handles them all so poorly that interest in the story gets lost.
I loved the story of the man from Zimbabwe and the picture of the tightropers and how he'd like to see their faces to understand more...
I loved how he meets the woman, how he helped out the old man chased by the police and the bond that was created between them from then on. I loved the two old men in their tailor / puppet shop. Also the music element that is brought by the woman character (very good Heike Makatsch)is interesting but is not handled well. There are a million good ideas in this movie, and they seem to all get lost in a pathetic story of a love triangle and a woman's love - and whims - for two very different men... Yawn, yawn, yawn.
There are also some loose ends (why does the old man steal?) that are a little irritating.
Anyway, very good performances by all; Daniel Craig's fans should enjoy his acting tremendously, he is perfect.
Obsession I can understand.......2007-01-18
This movie promises much but delivers a product that does not do the actors justice. It suffers from a disjointed script and is way too ambitious in trying to cover the scope of true obsession. I did not get to grips with the charactors as deeply as I would have had hoped and despite a stirling job from Daniel Craig and Heike Matkatch they seem to wander around in a dream at times.
Obsession in itself is a highly charged emotion and there are some good scenes throughout this movie but ultimately this film suffered in the editing room and it's a real shame. I enjoyed it but not at the deeper level I was looking for. Also I didn't get the ending. You are left wondering what happened. did they all live together?
Great performances from all the actors involved but as for the director - could do better

Description
After a long trip traveling through 1840s Europe, nobleman Lavretsky returns home to a familiar estate dear to his heart. While visiting his neighbors he meets the enchanting Lisa, spurring him to forget his wife and his past in Paris. Adapted from a novel by Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, this romantic tale of passion is a visually sumptuous classic.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful Russian film.......2005-02-13
Nest of the Gentry is a beautifully filmed tale of 19th century Russia. Adapted from Turgenev's novel it tells of Lavretskii a nobleman returning to his childhood home after travelling abroad. He is married, but the marriage has been unhappy and his wife has remained in Paris. Lavretskii hopes to find in his native soil something that has been missing from his life for so many years. He finds Lisa a young woman many years his junior. Her beauty and morally serious nature are contrasted in his memory with the frivolous life he has left. Gradually the two of them fall in love. Amidst a beautiful landscape the pair try to find happiness, but many difficulties stand in the way of their romance.
Nest of the Gentry is not merely a delightful and poignant love story it is also deeply concerned with the Russian search for meaning in the Russian land. It is as much Lavretskii's rediscovery of his native land, which leads to his once more finding purpose in life, as it is his discovery of Lisa. The film cleverly uses passages of Turgenev's prose to illustrate these issues. The result is powerful and moving. The acting in the film is good with Irina Kupchenko especially fine as the beautiful, deep and somewhat mysterious Lisa. The film looks simply stunning even if the print on the DVD is not without a few blemishes. The soundtrack is clear and distinct and makes good use of music to emphasise the mood of the film. The story may be rather slight, not a great deal actually happens, but it remains interesting throughout and is well worth watching for anyone interested in Russian literature, language and culture.

Instead he finds that she has bought a run-down apartment building, and along with it, a long list of expensive repairs and crazy tenants. Complicating matters, the husband wants his "old army buddy" to move into one of the apartments - but neglects to tell his wife that the "buddy" is a seductive ex-WAC plyed by none other than Marilyn Monroe! Then, a con-man who's wanted by the FBI moves into the building, ensuring that there isn't a moment of peace and quiet for anyone who lives there. When a series of hilarious domestic fights result over the unwelcome residents, there's absolutely no place like this home!
Customer Reviews:
A fifty cent haircut for a dollar twenty five??.......2006-06-02
Love Nest is a good little comedy that probably would have been long forgotten if Marilyn Monroe fans did not buy it. The cover is misleading because Marilyn never appears in uniform in the movie. Her part is small, but like all her early roles, she used every second of her camera time to make herself known, thus becoming the star we all love.
Mr. Scott is a vet returning from World War II. His wife has purchased a tenant house in the city, a fixer upper. The rent from the tenants will permit Mr. Scott to pursue his writing. Among the tenants are Edie the widow and her daughter, Marilyn who is a returning WAC, causing some jealousy from Mrs. Scott, a con man, and the "Mm-Hmm Man". The only two lines the guy has in the movie is "Mm-Hmm".
The con man goes after old widows and scams them out of their money. He claims he is doing it for all men, because the men worked themselves into an early grave, leaving their wives with money they did not earn or deserve. He begins his scam on Edie, but after realizing she is poor, he ends up falling in love with her an eventually marries her.
Meanwhile poor Mr. Scott has his hands full with the house. The plumbing is bad, the coal is delivered in through the bedroom window, and the place is about to be condemned because of bad wiring. His writing isn't going so well either. His first story has been rejected. He and his wife begin fighting and he leaves to sleep outside in his hammock. Unfortunately, Suds the cat decides to wreck havoc on him. Mr. Scott ends up sleeping in Marilyn's apartment while she is away for the weekend. He gets caught by his wife, but she has bigger news. She has caught on to the con man's game. Seems the feds have too and shortly after he and Edie marry, the police arrest him. All seems lost, but it works out well in the end.
Mr. Scott writes the con man's story and it turns into a national bestseller. They have plenty of money to fix up the tenant house and everyone lives happily ever after. The con man and Edie are seen walking down the street with their newborn twins.
Marilyn looks great as always. She only appears in this movie for a total of maybe ten minutes, but for Marilyn fans who love to see her in her early work like I do, this is a great addition to your collection.
not enough of monroe.......2006-05-18
as a younger viewer (not born until the 1970's) I am just discovering Monroes films. I like "7 year itch", "Niagra" and "dont bother to knock", but this film doesn't have enough Monroe. If they didnt put her on the cover and pretend it was a Monroe film Im sure alot less people would have purhchased it. She isnt even well casted for the role. She doesn't look like she would have been a WAC.
The film is okay, but its nothing worth owning. The plot is really stupid and the jokes aren't that great. All the actors did a great job, but there is only so much you can do with a silly premise like this...
The Boy With The Golden Arm.......2004-05-08
Its the start of spring training and Dallas is missing its rookie quarterback. An irate Coach Salinas has scoured the locker room, the weight room and the scorching playing field; but the man is drawing a blank. The kid with the million dollar arm is nowhere to be found.
Cut to: Exterior of a silver 1950s era trailer in the middle of nowhere. Driving guitar music on the soundtrack now. Cut to: Interior of the trailer. Our quarterback (Mark Wahlberg) is popping the cork off a bottle of champagne, spraying it all over a nameless floozie in a pink string bikini, laughing uproariously. The floozie hoses Wahlberg down with a bottle of her own. Why the string bikini? Come on, folks. This is a Disney picture, after all.
Alright.......2003-08-21
it was a great movie but i just wish Marilyn was in the movie more
Adorable.......2001-11-07
Some films aren't really 5 stars, but because of their charm and actors, you make an exception. Monroe shines in this cute little movie. I would say you need to be a true Monroe fan to really appreciate this one. It has a simple somewhat slow plot, but gee who can resist a black and white with her in it?
