If you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. It gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley Joel Osment, teetering on puberty) spends an eventful summer with his great-uncles on their vast Texas farmland (he's been dumped there by his delinquent mom, played by Kyra Sedgwick), he soon discovers they've lived lives full of adventure, excitement, passion, and mystery. Either that or they're old-time bank robbers with a long criminal record, and writer-director Tim McCanlies (who invested similar warmth into The Iron Giant) does a nice job of concealing the truth until the very end. Full of enriching lessons and homespun humor, Secondhand Lions has more substance than most family films. If you enjoyed Holes, you'll probably enjoy this movie, too. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This comedic and touching family film follows the adventures of a shy young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who is sent to spend the summer with his eccentric uncles (Michael Caine, Robert Duvall). At first shocked by his uncles' unconventional behavior that includes ordering African lions through the mail, the boy soon becomes enthralled with unraveling the mystery that has followed the uncles for years. Hearing tales of their exotic adventures involving kidnapped princesses, Arabian sheiks and lost treasure, not only brings him closer to his uncles but also teaches him what it means to believe in something... whether it's true or not.

4 out of 5 stars Secondhand Lions Review.......2007-08-08

This film is great for everyone - young and old. It's funny but has a few sad moments, and some action (without the use of lots of special effects). I laughed (everytime) and cried (at least the first time). It's a wonderful film!

5 out of 5 stars If you liked Phenomenon and The Princess Bride, you'll love Second Hand Lions!.......2007-07-25

My title says it all. I can't say much more than what anyone else said, other than anyone who enjoyed PHENOMENON and THE PRINCESS BRIDE will surely enjoy Second Hand Lions. And of course, Robert Duvall in also in PHENOMENON. You either get it or you don't! If you like these, try POWDER too.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Jewel.......2007-07-24

I loved this movie when I saw an edited version on TV so I had to buy my own copy. I loaned it to my niece at Christmas for her boys (8 and 10) because so few movies out there are suitable anymore. They loved it and still watch it over and over. I am buying myself a new copy so that I can watch it over and over.

After making her name in The Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway takes a radical detour with this edgy independent drama. As Allie, a wealthy gangsta wannabe, she makes no excuses for her delinquent behavior: "We're just teenagers and we're bored." When her Pacific Palisades posse, including pal Emily (Bully's Bijou Phillips), starts hanging out with a Latino gang (including Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodríguez), they learn what thug life is really about. Hathaway couldn't be more game: She swears, she fights--she disrobes (several times). Written and directed by Oscar winners Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Barbara Kopple (American Dream), Havoc plays like a B movie, in the vein of the superior crazy/beautiful, and was released straight to video. For Hathaway fans, it's a chance to see this young talent in a very different light, but for Gaghan and Kopple followers, this lurid morality tale is sure to come as a letdown. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

A group of wealthy Los Angeles teenagers try to become part of the "gangsta" lifestyle but soon run into trouble when they come face to face with a real gang of Latino drug dealers.

3 out of 5 stars crash lite.......2007-08-11

just see it for the ladies, because other than that it is like crash. Well wait this came out before Crash so..oh who cares. end result is the gang bangers bump heads with the wanna be gb's and it all goes downhill from there. Bayou Phillips is hot and so is Hathaway if you know what I am talking about so if you are looking for that kind of action it is here. Really now, good acting and neat story. Just that, well kind of not realistic, like the girls trying to get into a gang and stuff. Any teen that does something THAT dumb needs to start over in the first grade or just be admitted into an asylum.

3 out of 5 stars Havoc (Unrated Version)..........2007-08-11

Overall, I found this film, adequate. A few notes:

1. Girls looking for thrills/excitement in East L.A.? I don't think so. Go rolling to East L.A. in a convertible Mercedes or SUV? Can you say car-jack victim? I can...without any bias whatsoever.

2. The initiation scene is somewhat realistic. It has been said that in order for girls to join certain male dominated groups (gangs, etc.), that they must submit themselves to the 'group.' That has been documented in the press...any teenage girls out there? Well, beware!!

3. As a person who has been to Palisades High School in West Los Angeles (yes, folks, Pacific Palisades High School is real, just minutes from the beach!). You do indeed see kids immersed in the hip-hop culture. The difference? Some of these kids' families are very well-off. That part of the movie comes through very well. Families with the kind of money depicted in the film are usually quite busy making money, and not home for their kids...well, you know the rest.

4. Finally, the scene where the Palisades boys go to look for the gang-bangers that ravaged their friend was just unrealistic. These guys would have been seen a mile-off and would have been dealt with accordingly. Strangers in a strange land, would be an adequate description.

Again, I found the movie...adequate, decently acted, but not much more. Rent (or borrow) a copy and judge for yourself. Three stars...

3 out of 5 stars Raw.......2007-07-13

Raw script and raw acting. To watch how teens descend into a path of decadence so easily seems almost surreal. And such a fine line that separates the glamour and bummers in Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars havoc.......2007-07-07

hi guys the movie havoc i myself liked the movie.i like anne hathaway and to be honest i dont mind her being nude in the movie.but anne can act the movie aint disney but anne is grown up and this is a movie that shows anne as an adult.the movie is gritty,it has drug use violence.and nudity anne can handle adult movies roles. so for the older anne hathaway fans who want to check out the adult anne check out the movie.so if you buy the film purchase the unrated version more bang for you buck plus more anne.duane

4 out of 5 stars Havoc.......2007-07-05

Havoc was a pretty good movie. It depicts a fairly accurate picture between real thugs and fake ones. It also shows how teenagers curiosity can get them into serious trouble. Only problem with the movie is the directors inept ending.

Fantastical writer Gary Ross (Big, Dave) makes an auspicious directorial debut with this inspired and oddly touching comedy about two '90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) thrust into the black-and-white TV world of Pleasantville, a Leave It to Beaver-style sitcom complete with picket fences, corner malt shop, and warm chocolate chip cookies. When a somewhat unusual remote control (provided by repairman Don Knotts) transports them from the jaded real world to G-rated TV land, Maguire and Witherspoon are forced to play along as Bud and Mary Sue, the obedient children of George and Betty Parker (William H. Macy and Joan Allen). Maguire, an obsessive Pleasantville devotee, understands the need for not toppling the natural balance of things; Witherspoon, on the other hand, starts shaking the town up, most notably when she takes basketball stud Skip (Paul Walker) up to Lover's Lane for some modern-day fun and games. Soon enough, Pleasantville's teens are discovering sex along with--gasp!--rock & roll, free thinking, and soul-changing Technicolor. Filled with delightful and shrewd details about sitcom life (no toilets, no double beds, only two streets in the town), Pleasantville is a joy to watch, not only for its comedy but for the groundbreaking visual effects and astonishing production design as the town gradually transforms from crisp black and white to glorious color. Ross does tip his hand a bit about halfway through the film, obscuring the movie's basic message of the unpredictability of life with overloaded and obvious symbolism, as the black-and-white denizens of the town gang up on the "coloreds" and impose rules of conduct to keep their strait-laced town laced up. Still, the characterizations from the phenomenal cast--especially repressed housewife Allen and soda-shop owner Jeff Daniels, doing some of their best work ever--will keep you emotionally invested in the film's outcome, and waiting to see Pleasantville in all its final Technicolor glory. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantville .......2007-09-01

This is one of my favorite movies. I love the story and the way they have slowly turned each person from black and white to color. It says so many things in this movie that I just think it one of the best.

4 out of 5 stars Add Color to your Life!.......2007-08-28

A town completely in black and white. Safe. Unexciting. Mundane. That's smallville. However, strange things begin to happen when feelings are introduced. Things that get the town up in arms and into a fight to maintain the status quo! For me this movie is a love story. Difficult to explain without giving it away. Lets call it a date movie. You will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Please get the point of this movie.......2007-08-26

The whole point of the movie was nothing is ever "black and white". We all know that people in the '50's weren't all happy, hunky dory, "pleasant" people. There was just as much crime, drugs, and sex then as now. It was just covered up more.
As the people in the film become less one dimensional they become more complex and thus less "black and white".
WARNING- SPOILERS:

Many reviewers have said that immoral behavior invoked the color. The character Jennifer/Mary Sue has slept with lot of guys when she was in the real world and still does so in this world, so sex does not change her into a color character. Only when she actually finishes a book for the first time in her life, then she becomes colorized. Also, David does not bloom into color until he breaks out of his aloofness and defends his "mother." Compare the way he ignores his real mother at the beginning of the film to how he consoles and comforts her at the end to see how much David has changed. So I guess giving up sex for self-worth and honoring thy mother is immoral.
Life isn't like the shows we watch on tv, not even now. Too many people want life to be like "it was" or like they think it was in the '50's.It never was or is going to be like that. Life is complex and wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Must See--Highly Recommend.......2007-07-31

Reese Witherspoon, Tobey Maguire and cast are splendid in this finely crafted film. Tobey Maguire, screenwriter and director all deserve the highest praise for the most sympathetic character every invented.

This is, in a nutshell, a gorgeous film that offers a new way to look at life and the changes that occurred in the 1960s. The hope and dreams of a generation are embodied not only in the switch to color but the multiculturalist and democratic message that we are all individuals with our strengths and personalities and dreams that cry out to be recognized.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantville.......2007-07-13

"Pleasantville" is a sparkling, witty, highly original film that examines the nasty underside of quaint family values as they are embodied in every age, especially as it critiques the social rigidity of black and white (i.e. prejudice) with its thinly veiled conceit of "color" (i.e. diversity, individuality). William H. Macy and Joan Allen are well cast as the teens' parents, playing nicely off Maguire's low-key, conformist David/ "Bud" and Witherspoon's wild girl. Enhanced by some charming special effects, "Pleasantville" is a blissful comic fantasy with a message of tolerance for us all.

From the director of Dude, Where's My Car? comes another crazed tale of two friends on a perilous quest--in this case, to eat burgers at the fast food restaurant White Castle. The pair--repressed Harold (John Cho, Better Luck Tomorrow) and freewheeling Kumar (Kal Penn, Love Don't Cost a Thing)--get extremely high and set off on the road, only to be sidetracked by skateboarding hooligans, racist cops, an inbred tow truck driver, and Neil Patrick Harris--yes, Doogie Howser, M.D. The humor is all over the map, and it would be nice if there were one female character who wasn't a caricature, but Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle has a loose, gregarious charm, and the movie's canniness about the cliches of the buddy-movie genre give it a sneaky subversive feel--just the fact that neither of the heroes is white puts a different spin on just about every circumstance. Surprisingly clever, cheerfully stupid. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2007-08-19

God's Blessings: I was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. There was a shot in the movie that says "Welcome To Hoboken. This movie was filmed in New Jersey. While living in New Jersey I enjoyed White Castle hamburgers. This movie is a great comedy. I enjoy watching it on my DVD player. Thank You.

4 out of 5 stars extremely funny.......2007-07-31

"Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" is one of the funniest movies that I've ever seen. Though the jokes sometimes get a little stupid, I was amused throughout the film. Though the plot of the movie isn't very original (two stupid guys getting high and going on an adventure that features a lot of sex has been done before), I still found the film to be outrageously funny. I guess that type of plot line never gets old. I first saw this film two years ago and have seen it twice since. It was funny all three times. However, if you don't like crude and blatant humor, you probably won't like this film, since that type of humor is displayed throughout. Despite that, I love this movie and would recommend it to most people.

2 out of 5 stars More commedy for men.......2007-07-13

Has anyone noticed that while women have advanced in dramas they are probably worse off than ever in commedies? Little more than playthings or opponents for men in virtually EVERY modern commedy, from Harold and Kumar to 40 Year Old Virgin, Beerfest, etc. I think women were stronger characters and got better lines in the old screwball commedies of the 1930s!!!

1 out of 5 stars Asians on Drugs.......2007-06-15

Being an Asian immigrant who likes to occasionally eat at White Castle, I was interested in seeing this film. It turned out to be worse than I could have imagined. The movie is about drugs, drugs and more drugs and there is nothing funny about it. White Castle hamburgers make an appearance at the end but mostly it is drugs the Asian characters want. They smoke marijuana all the time which is not like any Asians I know. The white people in the movie are always calling Asians names but that is not like any white people I know either. In the real world, it is only the Black and Spanish that have called me names because I am Asian. I would only recommend this movie if you think it is funny to watch Asian people smoke marijuana.

2 out of 5 stars Reefers and Slyders.......2007-06-03

You've got to cut independent films like this some slack given that they are produced on a low budget with relatively inexperienced actors. You've got to cut this film even more slack because it is a comedy: Even if some things seem pretty stupid, they are meant to be stupid. The problem with "Harold & Kumar," however, is that it is much more stupid than ever intended. You can cut it all the slack you want and it's still pretty bad.

The story is about an East-Indian (or is he Pakistani?) named Kumar and his Korean friend (or is he Chinese?) named Harold. Smoking dope supposedly gives you the munchies, so, one evening, after smoking lots of marijuana, they get a craving for White Castle's mini-hamburgers ("Slyders"). But finding a White Castle proves harder than expected. The movie is about their bizarre search for more marijuana and for a White Castle.

"Harold & Kumar" is kind of a cross between the worst of Cheech & Chong and that academy award winner for politically correct zombies, "Crash."

Every White person in the film, except for Harold and Kumar's Jewish neighbors, is a racist who shouts slurs at our Asian leads. Harold and Kumar have anti-Asian slurs hurled at them all day long from White people. (My wife is Chinese and she has never been subjected to a racial slur by a White person in the more than fifeen years that she's lived in the New York City area.) The non-Jewish Whites in the film are either criminals who terrorize minorities or thuggish police officers who arrest Black people just because they are Black. (Yeah, who ever heard of a Black criminal?) That the only nice White people in the flick are Jewish is kind of interesting given that the screenplay was written by two guys with the surnames "Schlossberg" and "Hurwitz."

This is one of those movies, like the "Fritz the Cat" cartoons, that you have to watch stoned to enjoy. I'd say that you'd have to be really, really stoned!

One thing that is effective about the film, however, is that the ending will give you a craving for White Castle. I've never been a big fan of those Slyders but, the day after watching this film, I went to the White Castle on Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst to get my fix of them.

The plot line may sound familiar: Two mismatched cops are assigned as reluctant partners to solve a crime. Culturally they are complete opposites, and they quickly realize they can't stand each other. One (Jackie Chan) believes in doing things by the book. He is a man with integrity and nerves of steel. The other (Chris Tucker) is an amiable rebel who can't stand authority figures. He's a man who has to do everything on his own, much to the displeasure of his superior officer, who in turn thinks this cop is a loose cannon but tolerates him because he gets the job done. Directed by Brett Ratner, Rush Hour doesn't break any new ground in terms of story, stunts, or direction. It rehashes just about every "buddy" movie ever made--in fact, it makes films such as Tango and Cash seem utterly original and clever by comparison. So, why did this uninspired movie make over $120 million at the box office? Was the whole world suffering from temporary insanity? Hardly. The explanation for the success of Rush Hour is quite simple: chemistry. The casting of veteran action maestro Jackie Chan with the charming and often hilarious Chris Tucker was a serendipitous stroke of genius. Fans of Jackie Chan may be slightly disappointed by the lack of action set pieces that emphasize his kung-fu craft. On the other hand, those who know the history of this seasoned Hong Kong actor will be able to appreciate that Rush Hour was the mainstream breakthrough that Chan had deserved for years. Coupled with the charismatic scene-stealer Tucker, Chan gets to flex his comic muscles to great effect. From their first scenes together to the trademark Chan outtakes during the end credits, their ability to play off of one another is a joy to behold, and this mischievous interaction is what saves the film from slipping into the depths of pitiful mediocrity. --Jeremy Storey

4 out of 5 stars Rush Hour is one of best buddy-cop movies.......2007-03-13

I get a kick out of this movie. The way Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker interact and play off each other is so hilarious. Jackie Chan's Hollywood career got a second break with Rush Hour and the plot has more substance than most Jackie Chan movies.

We got James Carter, played by Chris Tucker, who is an LAPD detective with a penchant for dancing Michael Jackson-style while blowing up blocks of buildings. This gets him into trouble with his sergeant who, at the request of the FBI, assigns him to a case where he ends up being a nurse maid to Lee (Chan), a Chinese detective who has just broken up a huge smuggling ring in Hong Kong. The FBI want Carter and Lee to not interfere with the investigation of the kidnapping of the Chinese Consul's daughter, but Lee and Carter do anyway, in their own charismatic manner and triumph where the FBI fail.

The martial arts expertise of Jackie Chan is fantastic and shows that his truly a master in what he does. Chris Tucker does a terrific job of playing the off the wall LAPD officer who trys to keep Chan's character out of the way of an investigation. Chris Tucker is an extremely well disciplined actor, and seems to go very smoothly with the styles of Jackie Chan. Not only is the action part of the movie good, the now common jokes in martial arts movies are all there, including many racial/cultural difference jokes not necessarily making fun of races, but the cultural differences. Rush Hour is nothing to take seriously, but it is fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies!.......2007-03-07

Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) who has the fastest mouth in the L.A. police force has an assignment to track down a Chinese Consular's daughter with the help of Hong Kong detective Lee (Jackie Chan). The Two aren't getting along quite well for Carter thinks everything is his way, for Lee the mission is important but eventually along the way they become friends and must stop the international criminal mastermind behind this.

Phenomenal and entertaining action-comedy that has the right ingredients to make one of 1998's most popular movies! Chan and Tucker make a great team together. The movie has a perfect mix of action, laughs, and stunts from Chan, it's the best work Brett Ratner has done and the sequel is even better.

The DVD has crisp picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, isolated score, Deleted scenes, featurette, a short film, the theatrical trailer, DVD-Rom extras and music video by Dru Hill.

Elf is genuinely good. Not just Saturday Night Live-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; Elf is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, Elf is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau (Swingers) shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. Frankly, Elf feels miraculous. Also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and Ed Asner as Santa Claus. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Thanks to Ferrell, it's no lump of coal.......2007-05-26

The yuletide season always brings a handful of holiday-themed releases, but most of them are pure humbug. It's only every five years or so that a true holiday classic comes along. Elf, from actor/director Jon Favreau ("Swingers"), tries to buck that trend by dressing Will Ferrell in tights and putting his comic skills to the test.

Ferrell plays Buddy, a human who grew up among Santa's elves. When he was a baby, he snuck into Santa's bag on Christmas Eve and wasn't discovered until Santa was back at the North Pole. Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) "adopted" Buddy and raised him. But now, Buddy is sticking out like a sore thumb within the elf community because of his ungainly size, unable to perform classic elf functions like toy building.

Buddy decides the answer to his problems is to seek out his human father Walter (James Caan) in New York City. Walter is the stereotypical big-business prick, and initially wants nothing to do with his elf-son freak. That leaves Buddy to inadvertently score a job at a department store, which leads to a romance with fellow store employee Jovie (Zooey Deschanel) and much hilarity when Buddy prepares for a visit from "Santa," thinking the real deal is on the way. When he sees that the store-hired Santa is actually an imposter, hilarious havoc ensues.

Walter slowly starts to warm to Buddy, who befriends his wife (Mary Steenburgen) and neglected son (Daniel Tay). But as Buddy becomes an increasingly disruptive presence at Walter's workplace, the fragile new family bond is threatened. Things comes to a head on Christmas Eve, naturally, as Santa begins his toy-delivering run and Walter desperately tries to make an 11th hour book sale.

Director Favreau and his crew deserve props for their work in creating the elf community. By using forced perspective and some cool animation techniques, they do a great job of building a unique world that captures the feel of the classic "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty The Snowman" animated holiday specials.

The screenplay, by newcomer David Berenbaum, is best when it places Ferrell in inventive fish-out-of-water scenarios. The story does stoop to formulaic scenarios from time-to-time, but it's a little more forgivable in this instance, since we're talking about a Christmas movie. The cast is also a mixed bag. Former Academy Award nominees Caan and Steenburgen are largely wasted in thankless roles, but Newhart and Deschanel make the most of theirs.

Fortunately, when the film threatens to get stuck in syrupy cliche, the wacky Ferrell comes to the rescue. He pulls out all the stops in an off-the-wall comedic performance that will have you in stitches. From wild slapstick to nuanced facial expressions, this is pure comedic genius at work.

It remains to be seen whether "Elf" becomes a new holiday classic, but thanks to Ferrell, it's definitely no lump of coal. It's a great way to have some holiday fun and raise your Christmas spirits.

4 out of 5 stars Way Too Fun to Take Seriously.......2007-05-17

Elf is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies.

Will Ferrell fans fall into two camps: the ones that appreciate his raunchy side, and those who find his goofy innocence charming.

I'm in the second camp.

My children and I quote Elf often. "Does somebody need a hug?" is a favorite.

But I know perfectly wonderful people who hated the movie.

If you go for art or brilliant acting/writing, or a deep heartfelt message to take away with you -- you probably shouldn't go there with Elf. The logical will be annoyed with the elf adoption and flying sleigh logistics.

But if you find it at all amusing when grown men wear tights and get sideswiped by taxis, Elf may be singing your song. Does excessive childlike behavior no matter how old the child, coax a smile? Then Elf may be a movie you'll add to your favorites list.

Elf may fall into that category with Napoleon Dynamite...either you love it or you hate it. And I'm a Napoleon fan. I even loved Nacho Libre, Three Amigos and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Give me an excellent sight gag, some physical humor and a few great one-liners and I'm in.

Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carrey's 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber- faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly costars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey falls in love (both in real life and as his moronic on-screen character). As Lloyd and Harry make a mad dash to return the briefcase (never aware of its contents), the bumbling buddies attract Mobsters, cops, and trouble galore. This lowbrow laugh-a-thon scores some solid hits for hilarity, but with gags involving ill-fated parakeets, buxom bimbos, and an overdose of laxatives, be prepared to put your brain--and good taste--on hold. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A movie that lives up its title!.......2007-09-02

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels deliver in this hilarious 1994 comedy! From the beginning to end there is so much stupid humor that it's too bad they never made a sequel. All I can say is that Dumb and Dumber is just plain good fun for everyone! I enjoyed this version!

5 out of 5 stars Yeah, killer boots man!.......2007-09-01

What a classic comedy. This is by far one of my favorite comedy movies ever to grace a dvd. It never gets old it just gets funnier. It's like a fine wine as it gets better with age. Jeff Daniels and Jim Carey are the perfect duo to get the job done. I still can't look at Jeff Daniels seriously. The image of him with that crazy hair is burned into my memory so that any film I see him in he will always be Harry Dunne.

If you haven't seen this then you have to get it asap. It will leave you rolling on the floor.

4 out of 5 stars A classic funny movie........2007-08-06

(Disclaimer: This review is for the original dvd version, not the unrated version. Amazon grouped all Dumb and Dumber movies together so when you write a review for one movie, the review shows up for every Dumb and Dumber movie.)

When it comes to movies that are rude, crude, yet comedic, Dumb and Dumber is at the top of the list. Many will chuckle at the two main characters' wacky performances as a socially-retarded duo.

So what's this movie about? Lloyd and Harry have been fired from their jobs. They find their pet bird dead. Nothing is working out for them. With nothing to lose, they decide to take a trip to Aspen to return a briefcase that one of Lloyd's customers, Mary, left at the airport. The rest of the movie has the guys running into unfortunate incidents on the way to Aspen.

Let's talk about the positives first. I can't go through an entire review without mentioning Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Both are incredibly funny in their own way and it's safe to say that they were made for these roles. Second, the movie moves at a steady pace. No dull spots. Just continuous entertainment and comedy. Third, although the storyline may not seem like it's anything special, the many twists aid the plot immensely. Lastly, the comedy is simply enjoyable. Some jokes are obvious, some are not, but they all tie into the movie rather nicely.

And now for the negatives. First, there are a couple of jokes/scenes here and there that some may find offensive or not funny. If you're even a tad bit sensitive, you may not like this movie. Also, in my opinion, this movie is not Oscar-worthy. Don't expect too much from it. It's mainly a movie that provides a few chuckles as well as a couple of hours of entertainment.

If you're looking for a good comedic movie to pass a couple of hours with a group of friends, Dumb and Dumber is it.

3 out of 5 stars Better or worse?.......2007-07-21

As soon as my friend brought this, one of the best movies ever made, over to my house with an "unrated" stamp on the front, I was quite wary. When I looked at the case and saw "6 extra minutes" I knew they had ruined a classic. After watching it, to my dismay I was right. If you're looking to buy this movie, that is of course if for some reason you don't already have the original, don't even think about it. The added content is completely unnecessary, and quite annoying.

5 out of 5 stars As I was trading lines from this movie with a friend I realized ...........2007-06-15

only 'Holy Grail' and 'Caddyshack' can be quoted as much as this movie. Agree that this is Jim's masterpiece and also he and Jeff Daniels really worked well together. Look closely at the facial expressions of Jim Carrey. He does every emotion, but does it over the top. That is comedy genius.
Quite simply, one of the funniest movies ever made.

Rush Hour 2 retains the appeal of its popular predecessor, so it's easily recommended to fans of its returning stars, Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. The action--and there's plenty of it--starts in Hong Kong, where Detective Lee (Chan) and his L.A. counterpart Detective Carter (Tucker) are attempting a vacation, only to get assigned to sleuth a counterfeiting scheme involving a triad kingpin (John Lone), his lethal henchwoman (Zhang Ziyi, from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and an American billionaire (Alan King). Director Brett Ratner simply lets his stars strut their stuff, so it hardly matters that the plot is disposable, or that his direction is so bland he could've phoned it in from a Jacuzzi.

At its best, Rush Hour 2 compares favorably to Chan's glossiest Hong Kong hits, and when the action moves to Las Vegas (where Don Cheadle makes an unbilled cameo), the movie goes into high-pitched hyperdrive, riding an easy wave of ambitious stuntwork and broad, derivative humor. Echoes of Beverly Hills Cop are too loud, however, and stale ideas (including a comedic highlight for Jeremy Piven as a gay clothier) are made even more aggravating by dialogue that's almost Neanderthal in its embrace of retro-racial stereotypes. Of course, that's what makes Rush Hour 2 a palatable dish of mainstream comedy; it insults and comforts the viewer at the same time, and while some may find Tucker's relentless hamming unbearable, those who enjoyed Rush Hour are sure to appreciate another dose of Chan-Tucker lunacy. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars And they dare to make another! How does Chris Tucker .......2007-08-02

keep getting movie deals? He's terrible, he's got to be pleasuring someone higher up in the biz. Jackie Chan isn't a great actor, but he has some appeal and he knows his kung fu. But, Tucker has nothing going for him. And why, do producer/directors think racism sounds better coming out of black person's mouth? It's all stupid and ignorant baloney and always was. Stop please, and start making better movies.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm on vacation man, and I want some moo-shoo!" "Moo-Shoots? You hungry?".......2007-06-13

I really enjoyed the first Rush Hour but you can tell that Jackie Chan was given more control over the action in this one, the action is 10 times better than in the first one while the comedy stays at the same level.

Chris Tucker plays James Carter, a high-strung, motor-mouthed LAPD detective whose captain (Philip Baker Hall) is tired of his antics - and, yes, we've all heard that one before. The captain selects Carter as a candidate for an embarrassing job as a "babysitter" for Hong Kong detective inspector Lee (Jackie Chan), who has been invited to America by the Chinese consul (Tzi Ma), whose young daughter was violently kidnapped. The thing is, the FBI doesn't want a foreigner interfering with their investigation, so that's why they need somebody to "babysit" Lee and keep him away from the Feds.

On the surface, this is a routine, familiar cop movie combining some unoriginal elements - the "fish out of water", the "culture clash", the "mismatched partners" bits, etc. However, it turns out to be genuinely entertaining and funny; Tucker and Chan turn out to be a good team (Tucker is particularly funny), and they are surrounded by a capable supporting cast. One thing I must say is that the identity of the mysterious villain "Juntao" will be unfortunately easy for some to guess...but I won't say more than that.

Being a huge Chan fan I tend to enjoy his Hong Kong movies better where he has complete control and, although the plot sometimes suffer, the action is far superior to anything Hollywood has to offer (check out Legend of Drunkin Master). You can see he was given some control over the action in "Rush Hour 2," making it his best American movie to date. One of these days Hollywood will get smart and give Chan complete control over a movie (action wise, with his own people) with the big Hollywood budget and he will make the best action movie EVER!!

Coasting on the successes of Gods and Monsters and George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser turns in yet another winning performance in this fish-out-of-water comedy in which Pleasantville meets modern-day Los Angeles, with predictably funny results. Fraser stars as Adam, who was born in the bomb shelter of his paranoid inventor dad (a less-manic-than-usual Christopher Walken), who spirited his pregnant wife (Sissy Spacek, in fine comic form) underground when he thought the Communists dropped the bomb (actually, it was a plane crash). Armed with enough supplies to last 35 years, the parents bring up Adam in Leave It to Beaver style with nary any exposure to the outside world. When the supplies run out, and dad suffers a heart attack, Fraser goes up to modern-day L.A. for some shopping and long-awaited culture shock. More of a cute premise with lots of clever ideas attached than a fully fleshed out story, Blast from the Past is also supposed to be part romantic comedy, as the hunky Adam hooks up with his jaded Eve (Alicia Silverstone) and tries to convince her to marry him and go underground. The sparks don't fly, though, because Silverstone is saddled with the triple whammy of being miscast, playing an underwritten character, and suffering a very bad hairdo. Fraser, however, carries the film lightly and easily on his broad, goofy shoulders, mixing Adam's gee-whiz innocence with genuine emotion and curiosity; only Fraser could pull off Adam's first glimpse of a sunrise or the ocean with both humor and pathos. Also winning is Dave Foley as Silverstone's gay best friend, who manages to make the most innocuous statements sound like comic gems. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Funny and Hip!.......2007-09-07

Meet Adam Webber(Brendan Fraser, The Mummy, George of the Jungle), born and raised in a bomb shelter with his mad scientist father(Christopher Walken, Pulp Fiction) and his sherry swilling mother(Sissy Spacek, JFK). Adam's simple childhood has been filled with Perry Como records, The Honeymooners re-runs and good old-fashioned family values. Now, 35 years later, Adam is about to emerge into a bewildering modern world in search of supplies and a simple girl from Pasadena. Instead, Adam meets Eve(Alicia Silverstone, Clueless) a modern LA woman, jaded about life and burned by love. The result is an engaging romantic comedy that's charming, funny and hip!

4 out of 5 stars Zany and Entertaining.......2007-08-28

Very enjoyable movie about a paranoid Father who is afraid of nuclear war, and the collision of errors that sends his family into a bomb shelter for 30 years. It is heartwarming, funny and romantic all rolled into one! And the Dad, he never learns!
