Customer Reviews:
"The Sculpture Anteater With Onion Ring Is Located In The Plaza.".......2007-09-06
As a long time "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fan, I love to revisit episodes periodically. This set is one of the few I had not previously purchased, mostly because I find the Hercules films to be exceptionally tedious. Of course that didn't stop me from watching the two contained here, "Hercules Unchained" and "Hercules Against the Moon Men." Without question "Hercules Against the Moon Men" is the more entertaining of the two due to the ludicrous imposition of "Moon Men" in a sword and sandals extravaganza. The riffing and host segments in the two Hercules films are great as usual, but I still find the films too boring to be very entertaining. The Hercules-induced tedium is the sole reason I gave the set four stars instead of the normal five stars for an MST3K set.
On the other hand, "Prince of Space" is one of my very favorite episodes. There is nothing as amusing as seeing Prince of Space using his magical stick to defeat the menacing chicken-like arch villain Krankor while yelling "Your weapons have no effect on me!" You'd think Krankor would figure it out, but he never does. The whole undercover superhero aspect of the plot combined with the typical Japanese children mitigating disaster ("We like boot blacking very much!") elements make this a must see episode.
I have always loved "The Killer Shrews" as well. I saw the original movie many years ago, and can't even begin to tell you how much the MST3K treatment adds to this somber, yet stupid, shaggy dog movie: I love the concept of dressing dogs up in shrew costumes and then making them chase the main characters off an island under inverted storage drums. The acting is hilariously overplayed, the concept is beyond laughable, and the direction and lighting are among the worst even by MST3K standards. I love it.
The set comes with three shorts that I liked to varying degrees. "Assignment: Venezuela," which was never used in an episode, is lengthy and is a modestly boring film about an American family moving to Venezuela to help the oil industry. There are some great riffs during this short, including my review title, which was Crow's description of a piece of modern sculpture. "Century 21 Calling" is an account of extremely white people learning about the telephones of tomorrow, which are quite humorous in retrospect. By far my favorite of the shorts is "A Case of Spring Fever," which is about the wonders of springs, and features a character named "Coily the Spring Sprite." ("Coily? Ewww.") I love this short because I completely don't understand who would make this film or why. Was it made by the National Spring Council? Was some other product in danger of dominating springs in the marketplace? I have no idea, but it makes for one of the best shorts ever.
In summary, any MST3K is a great thing, but compared to other sets this one left me wanting more...a little Hercules goes a long way. Despite that modest critique, I would still highly recommend volume seven.
GREAT SET HERE! GIVE ME MORE!!!!!.......2007-06-13
This is a very funny set of episode on volume 7. I am a fan of some of these old movies and "The Killer Shrews" is one goofy old film I've seen many times without the jokes! If your a fan of these guys this is another great set.
"Killer Shrew. Killer Shrew. Don't know the difference from me and you...".......2007-02-28
As much as I am a huge fan of MST3K, this set is easily one of the strongest DVD collections that Rhino has put out. With three episodes from the Joel/Comedy Central era and one from the Sci-Fi era, this set will keep you occupied for so long, what with repeated viewings and all.
The set kicks off with "Hercules Unchained", with a plot line I've never heard in the Greek myth stories: Hercules goes on a mission and drinks the "water of forgetfulness" and, you guessed it, forgets everything about his life, and is lured to some...secret kingdom of some sort. Joel and the bots have a real fun time with this one, as in one of the host segments, they make fun of the phrase "water of forgetfulness" with the food they eat and drink, like asparagus of happiness or something like that. 8/10
"Hercules Against The Moon Men" is a little stronger than the previous film, although it would have been best to not compile two Hercules in one set. Still, this movie is worth-watching. Granted, only a few of the riffs have been repeated from the previous Hercules flick, but it also contains some much stronger riffs than the other. This film involves Hercules on a mission to find out what the fuss is about with, you guessed it, the Moon Men. It has one of the funniest host segments: The Pants Song, sung by Joel and the bots, making fun of the costumes worn by the characters in the film. 8.5/10
While the Sci-Fi era may be considered to be Ganon's Sacred Realm for MST3K, you still get a gem every now and then. "Prince of Space" is one of those gems from that era. Granted, the host segments aren't really up to par, but the really cheesy film, as well as riffings from Mike and the bots really make up for it. This is your below-average, Saturday morning, children's Japanese superhero flick, that would better told in just a half hour than stretching it to an hour and a half. Memorable riffs pop up now and then such as "Krank 'wh*re'?", and the riffs run at a fairly consistent rate, keeping you occupied for quite a while. 7.5/10
This set goes out with a bang. That bang is "The Killer Shrews", one of my favorite episodes. I do believe cheesy monster flicks are so easily funny to poke at, making some of the funniest episodes of the series and this one is no exception. The plot is simple: a couple guys are sailing on a boat and arrive at an island infested with giant shrews. Some great moments are present here, including the Killer Shrew song ("Killer Shrew, Killer Shrew, Don't know the difference from me and you..."), and the riffs are consistently hilarious, making this the real highlight of this set. 9/10
In addition, you'll also get a few bonus featurette riffings from Joel and the bots, including a rarely seen featurette, "Assignment Venezuela", all of which are worth watching.
Deeeep Hurting...!.......2006-12-21
I brought this compliation mainly for the feature "Prince of Space" one of the last MST3K episodes I saw before the show was cancelled on the now weakened and somewhat abysmal SciFi Channel. But I found the two Hercules features and Killer Shrews to be just as hilarious. One of the Hearcules features was directed by a famous Italian director who also made Black Sunday and Planet of the Vampires.
Prince of Space.......2006-12-08
What can I add? I really miss MS3K. I HAD to get this collection, mainly for Prince of Space. I remember growing up and seeing this craptacular on a local UHF station. The two Hercules movies, eh. Some funny stuff there but the Shrews is better than both combined. Still, it a must have for any fan of MST3K!

Steve Reeves Hercules.......2007-02-12
the sequel to the Steve Reeves Hercules. A must for any Steve Reeves collector! Actually continues from the original Hercules movie. Locations are great and the story is OK too.
Quite a surprise.......2007-01-21
Hercules Unchained. My, my, my. I watched these movies as a boy. When I grew up, I just assumed they were children's movies and not very good at all. But surprisingly, this movie is enchanting. There are images that will not leave you easily. If you are not a romantic, if you are easily put off, forget it. If you buy the Westlake Entertainment version, in the extras there is a photo gallery. The background music consists of themes from the movie by the great Enzo Masetti, not easily found. Simply amazing music, very cinamatic and dreamy.
Entertaining Hercules Sequel.......2006-12-23
After reading several of the reviews of this movie, I would like to add my two cents.First of all this is a good sword and sandal film from the late 1950's.If you want superior acting then I suggest Hamlet with Lawrence Olivier. This is a lightweight, fun film that picks up where the original HERCULES leaves off.Although most of his movies follow the same plot formula, this Steve Reeves film is still very entertaining.Alot of the characters in the first film are in this movie as well. The movie also has an above average musical score. In my opinion his three best films are HERCULES, HERCULES UNCHAINED, and THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD.I also have several videos of him appearing in a number of television shows with his real speaking voice. Although his voice was not baritone, it is hardly "tinny".He turned down the role that eventually went to Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns.Reeves did not like the direction in which 1960's films were headed, so he decided to retire from acting.
Bad quality digital transfer .......2006-12-01
This DVD is produced by Westlake Entertainment Group. It runs for 107 minutes and is presented in the fullscreen format. There is an interactive menu that includes scene selection, photo gallery and very short biographies and filmographies.
The real problem is that the digital transfer used Westlake Entertainment Group is very poor quality. The resultant film imagery is like a very old VHS tape.
I would not recommend you buy from this distributor. This is symptomatic of a wider problem in which classic films that were made before the advent of the digital age are being treated disgracefully by producing bad low budget DVDs transfers. Show some respect to the director, actors and movie viewer and do it properly or dont do it at all and leave the market open for some other distributor to do it the way it should be done.
The Golden Age of the Herc.......2006-09-07
If you like poorly made movies from the 50s and 60s then the Hercules movies are good ones. This is the second movie that featured Steve Reeves as the title character and he was clearly the best of the lot. The way he looked and moved and spoke, you could really believe he was Hercules.
In this movie Herc and his wife and young Ulysses are headed to his home city of Thebes when they get sidetracked. Herc drinks from an enchanted pool of water and forgets who he is. He ends up with Queen Omphale, convinced he is married to her. Ulysses pretends to be Herc's deaf mute servant and tries to restore the Big Man's memory. There are other political elements to the plot but not much of it makes sense. Herc flexes his muscles, Omphale flexes her cleavage and there is a big free-for-all fight scene at the end. Hercules ends up back with his wife Iole and everyone lives happily ever after. The acting is cheesy, the direction erratic and the script bizarre.

Customer Reviews:
Not a good buy and not all that important as background to XENA.......2007-08-03
Absolutely no one would be interested in this disc except a XENA fan who wants to see the HERCULES episodes that introduced Xena. First, you can find the entire first season of HERCULES used for only slightly more than this 3-episode disc costs new. Second, there really isn't a whole lot here for a XENA fan to get excited about. Although she is clearly featured more prominently than other guest characters and though they clearly were setting her up for her own show by the time of the final episode, these simply aren't that good. One of the reasons people enjoy Xena is that she was the first truly heroic female character on television since Emma Peel (Wonder Woman was always worried about making her male boss look good and was hampered in her heroic daring-do by the kind of wire work that makes contemporary stunts look so impressive). But here she is a villain of sorts and though she is a villain who is on the verge of reform she is clearly inferior to Hercules both morally and physically. In short, it isn't why anyone watches Xena.
Look, if you want to watch Xena, stick to XENA. All you need to know here is that Hercules helped her change her ways and set out on a path of good. XENA will show far more about "bad Xena" than HERCULES would.
If you are undeterred and feel you simply must see the Xena episodes, then drop a few more dollars and buy all of Season One of HERCULES. I personally think HERCULES deserves more credit than it gets for its heroic presentation of women. It never presented women as a gender in perpetual need of care for by men. This particular man might help this particular woman, but neither HERCULES nor XENA articulated the view that only men got to be heroes. This can be seen by watching the Xena episodes in the context of the season as a whole.
Great 3 Episodes but you Save Money by Buying the First Season.......2006-06-19
I love these three epsidoes which introduced Xena and they are essentail if you are a Hercules or Xena fan. If you want to buy them though I would suggest buying the complete first season of Hercules. You get five full tv movies, these three episodes, and ten more episodes for fifteen dollars. You save eight dollars and you get so much more.
good episodes, overpriced.......2006-05-13
These 3 episodes of Hercules the Legendary journeys are available here for one price, but are also available as part of Hercules Season One for a lower price, (plus you get the rest of the season) and you can see the episodes in context. Also Herc season 1 contains 5 tv movies, 3 of which are really quite good. (the 1st is a bit weak and the 5th is a re-hash of the other four) Movie 1 has Lucy Lawless in a non-xena bit part, and Movie 2 has Renee O'Connor in a featured role. So if you get that set you'll get everything you get here, plus a lot more stuff, and it is A LOT CHEAPER.
GREAT!!!!.......2005-03-01
this is a great dvd, I advise this item for any die-hard xena fan! But only one problem, there are no special feature's! No commentary no nothing and that's a waist! Well I hope this review was helpful to anyone!

this item is soo bad dont buy it its very boring n not helpful i recomend u buy seasons.

Customer Reviews:
Steve Reeves deserved better DVD tribute.......2004-07-23
I got Steve Reeves' Double Feature of HERCULES/HERCULES UNCHAINED DVD last week.
I saw these 2 movies when I was young and it was good to see Steve Reeves again.
HOWEVER!!!!! It is regretful and a disappointment that the DVD was not made in Widescreen Format with improved colour quality and soundtrack. Seemed like half the movie is missing in certain scenes.
Surely! Steve Reeves deserved better.
It looked like the company put the 2 movies on DVD in the quickest and cheapest way without any consideration for the actor.
It made the movies look......Cheapily Done like a B or C rated movie.
Here are items that need improvement.
COLOUR - the movie needs to be digitally enhanced to bring out a more sharper, krispier colour. When I watched the movies you can see tiny, white specks and lines dancing around which showed the DVD was made from films that were worn and fading. Also some scenes were blurred. Not very clear.
AUDIO - The soundtrack could be remastered to make it smoother.
I have other movies like JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH starring James Mason, Pat Boone; JASON and THE ARGONAUTS, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND are just a few that were made back in the sixties. All these and others that I have, have been digitally enhanced in widescreen format with sharper, clearer picture colour and improved soundtrack.
Why can't this company turn around and try some serious restoration to these HERCULES films and have a little more respect to STEVE REEVES - Mr. Hercules himself!!!!??????
I think he would appreciate it more.
Wouldn't we all?
DVD Sucks.......2004-07-04
Movie not in anamorphic wide screen format. Half the picture is lost. "DO NOT BUY" . Scale of 1-5 rating is zero. Wait for the widescreen version.
Not widescreen.......2004-07-03
These brawn-and-sandal classics are, unfortunately, presented here in so-called "full" frame, 1.33:1. Since they were shot in a Cinemascope-like format, 2.35:1, more than half the original image is lost. This is not an acceptable way to view an epic. Purchase not recommended.
Eventually someone will release a widescreen version; all the more reason to send the message to labels like this one: No widescreen, no sale!
