disappointing.......2007-09-13

I was waiting to see this and it left me with a bad taste. The movie does have some good in it but I was expecting more. Some of the scenes were slow paced. A standard film.

It Has Action Flicks "Pegg-ed".......2007-09-13

The creative forces behind the comedic take on zombie flicks, "Shaun of the Dead," give us their interpretation of "every action movie ever made" with "Hot Fuzz." Fans of "Dead" will immediately notice headliner Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel, a London policeman who's excellence in service forces his superiors to ship him to a small country town in order to protect their own reputations. "Dead" fans will also recognize his bumbling sidekick played by Nick Frost. The duo quickly find plenty of trouble in their normally quiet town. A large number of "accidents" occur that peak the interest of supercop Angel. As the body count grows, Angel's list of suspects gets even larger. Who's causing the accidents? What action film isn't referenced? It's all here in this superb comedy.

Edgar Wright's hard-cutting, musically driven direction style is all over this film. Once again, fans of "Dead" will pick up on all of Wright's nuances as the story rolls along. The action is fast, loud, and over-the-top. It's also pretty gruesome and hilarious at the same time. Pegg is dead on as Angel. Despite his small stature you honestly believe that he's the ultimate police officer. Frost is perfect as the local idiot who only has a job because his dad's the chief inspector. The rest of the cast reads like a who's who of British film. Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman and Billie Whitelaw are just a few of the actors you'll find (some with large roles and others with just a blink of the eye's screen time). Each and every person in this film hams it up perfectly and appears to have had fun with the film.

The action sequences are all pretty convincing. Even the scenes that involve sweet old ladies packing automatic heat on a bicycle come off superbly.

The DVD is nice. The extras are pretty decent, especially the Fuzz-O-Meter and "The Man Who Would Be Fuzz." Overall, though, I'd buy this disc for the movie and not the extras.

If you enjoy spoofs (but not silly ones like "Epic Movie"), check out "Hot Fuzz." It's a lot smarter and funnier than you'd expect from a spoof. If you're a fan of "Shaun of the Dead," consider this film already a part of your library. It's only a matter of time before you buy it. Highly recommended.

witty and fun.......2007-09-10

Perhaps overreaching in its ambitions to be an action-flick parody, a cult ringer and a heartfelt britfilm, 'Hot Fuzz' is one thing for sure: a good time. 'Shaun of the Dead''s Simon Pegg and Nick Frost return to form as mismatched police partners uncovering a complicated and ironically silly plot by 'Wicker Man'-style villagers to keep their tiny English town on the map. The quick-edit techniques used to full effect in 'Shaun' get a little exhausting this time around, and the number of semi-obscure pop tunes thrown in can hardly be counted-- both probably a product of this outing's enhanced budget-- but it's the clever dialogue and characterizations that carry the day. If more films could be crafted with the care and intelligence that this one has been, the world's I.Q. might gain a few points as the human race rediscovered its sense of humor.

Few laughs.......2007-09-08

I couldnt wait to see this movie. I bought it and watched it right away. I was expecting some great things considering these guys made Shaun of the Dead. The first half hour flew by and I was bored. No real laughs just a typical movie. When he movies to the new town, there are a few laughs scattered thru out by it was disappointed. I love horror movies and I was surprised at how gory this movie was. It kind of reminded me of Broken Lizards. They released an amazing film, Super Troopers, then followed it up with a horror comedy that was bad, Club Dread. While these men did make a horror comedy that is probably one of the best ive ever see, this was suppose to be an action comedy. The ending of the movie was pretty sweet though.

I'll keep it brief:

This HD-DVD has a fantastic picture. Very, very pristine looking. The sound is really loud and will beat your surround speakers and subwoofer up something awful. Seriously. it rivals the most ridiculous sounding action movie you've seen. A simple scene like a purchase of an ice cream cone sounds almost like a multiple car crash. And the whole movie is like that. But I'm not complaining!

And there's more extras here than you'll be able to watch in one sitting. One of the extras is the second flip book drawing that Nick Frost's character shows off to Simon Pegg that we don't get to see in the film. Just that in itself is worth the price of admission!

Seriously though, this is (and I'm almost surprised to say it) an HD-DVD more than up to the task of being a demo for your home theater system.

"Official vocab guidelines state that" Hot Fuzz is a wonderul parody of action movies...and all with a British accent. It's nice to see Timothy Dalton again, as well as Bill Nighy's turn as the Chief Inspector. Some hilariously great lines and scenes, well worth the price of HD-DVD and then some. Also, it's one of the best looking HD-DVD's I've seen overall. Great PQ/AQ and loaded with features.

Hot Fuzz is totally cool!.......2007-08-25

Loved this movie in theaters, so when it came to DVD in the HD DVD/DVD combo pack I had to get it so I could play it in HD DVD and my sister could borrow it for her regular player. Sound and picture are gorgeous and the movie itself is as funny as I remember. Also enjoyed the look at Nick's notebook and the outtakes bonus features. Haven't had a chance to go through all the extras, but will at some point. I heartily recommend this movie for a new British twist on the old American buddy-cop shoot-em-up genre (with a little Godzilla thrown in).

i was expecting to laugh and had fun all time. we are very far from this honestly.It is a nice gentle movie but this can't go over 2 stars and don't deserve to be purchased on hd dvd.
My hd dvd has some slight pixelisation problems..first time i saw this on a Hd dvd
it is worth renting it.

Best Comedy Ever.......2007-08-31

Out of all the comedies I have seen, this is the best. It is the most original, the most well thought out, and just the most outright hilarious movie I have seen. The British accents, culture, characters, and settings make this comedy exceedingly unique and are a breath of fresh air when compared to the same old American settings(Hollywood), actors(Wilson, Stiller,Vaughn,etc.), and culture. Besides the comedy segments, this movie actually has substance and as many different qualities as any movie can have: action, adventure, drama, mystery, comedy, and suspense. As a caveat, this movie will be too unique and intelligent for some people who only like comedies based on people getting hurt or wearing funny clothes. Disclaimer - this movie contains intensely hilarious scenes that may cause some people to lose their breath or pull a muscle from laughing; the only remedy is to step out of the theater and take deep breaths.

I think it is really great. It is the only one that I have seen, where Jim Broadbent really goes out of his way to be thorough. At first he does not like the idea of being transfered, and no one in the department was very happy to have a new officer transfered from another town.

It is a must see!

Funny- but too violent.......2007-08-23

I thought it was pretty funny- the Danny character was great; but it was too violent at times (even though some of the violent acts were blatantly comical). I probably missed a lot of the jokes because they were subtle--I think it's one of those movies that would get funnier the more you watch it.

I've been looking for this film for years! My kids watched it growing up...wore out the VCR tape! What a goofy, fun movie. Glad to see it finally came out on DVD. My kids are thrilled to have it back in the file!

NOT the Super Fuzz from the Early 80's US.......2007-04-14

When I think of the early eighties, I immediately remember Colecovision & Atari and Queen, but I also remember some of the movies that were on Cinemax/HBO in the old days of novelty cable TV. Super Fuzz was definitely one of those movies that bring back memories, along with Flash Gordon & several Chevy Chase comedies (Oh Heavenly Dog, Modern Problems, etc.). While the movies are pretty campy by today's standards, I still enjoyed them.

First off, someone else mentioned it but I feel the need to re-iterate it. This is Super Snooper. What horrendous packaging... the cover says "Super Fuzz" but the movie is actually Super Snooper. I was so disappointed after getting this as a birthday present. Hey, it woulda been a fantastic gift! But, as sad as this might sound, I remember the music to every scene as if I'd seen it yesterday, and from the very beginning when Terrence is in the swamp, it's pretty clear that this isn't the Super Fuzz version that aired in the USA. The music comes on at the wrong times and is far too redundant in the European/Canadian version. But having said all of this, the general movie is the same with the same thing, and it's about a policeman who gets exposed to radiation and uses his super-powers to try to stop a counterfit ring. Hilarious scenes include him running extremely fast through traffic, roughing up some thugs in a bar, and taking an unexpected trip to China.

If you can get the version seen in the USA in the early eighties, I'd actually recommend it. It might not be a 'masterpiece' to some, but I really enjoyed the movie and it brings back some great memories.

I was wrong! This movie is widescreen!.......2007-03-20

I would like to apologize to Amazon. I complained about this version not being widescreen. I found out that I had to go into "setup" on my DVD controller and set it for 4:3 Letterbox. This will fix the problem everyone is having with the DVD playing in Fullscreen format.

It is true that this version is the Supersnooper version and not the Super Fuzz version. I have the Super Fuzz version on Fullscreen DVD and there are differences.

The plusses for the Supersnopper version: It is widescreen and a clean transfer. This version also has about five minutes of extra footage. The minuses: Some of the music is different in spots and some have said the commentary by Dave Speed is different in spots. I am not sure on that one, but I have only viewed it once so far.

The plusses for Super Fuzz version: It is the version I saw first and I am used to every scene and every musical note. The minuses: Fullscreen format makes the picture to cramped. Also the picture quality is not as good.

Bottom line: I need to keep both versions to be totally happy. What I want is for someone to release a version with all the scenes in it and leave the music as it was in the Super Fuzz version. Maybe that's not possible, but I can hope.

NOT quite Super Fuzz as you remember it.......2007-03-11

So I finally received my copy today after eagerly waiting for it for several weeks. Having seen it a dozen times on Showtime in 1983, and subsequently purchased the same version of the film on VHS in the '90's, I am pretty familiar with this movie. That said, here's the lowdown on this latest DVD release:
* It suffers from PAL speedup, noticeable in the voices and music, despite the fact this is an R1 release
* Film is anamorphic widescreen, 1:85:1.
* Opening credits feature the title SUPER SNOOPER instead of SUPER FUZZ
* There are a few additional scenes featured in the movie, and some extended scenes
* The voice of Dave Speed is still Terence Hill's, but it seems like it is a different recorded track compared to the other version (i.e. different line readings in a few instances)
* Many, many music cues have been replaced with the standard Super Fuzz musical theme from the opening. Other music cues have disappeared, and several scenes that didn't have music cues at all now have the Super Fuzz theme added. The theme really wears out its welcome in this version, whereas in the other version it was used more sparingly. One horrifying example of music alteration occurs in the scene where Dave busts out of the electric chair, heads underwater and rescues the chief on the bubble gum balloon, the new music and sound cues are awful.
* Other voices of some of the supporting characters are completely different, such as those of Tony Torpedo's goons
* A few pieces of Hill's voice-over narration appear to be missing or altered
* The camera filter used to make the helicopter scene appear to be dusk is gone; scene now appears to be in bright daylight

On the positive side, the quality and clarity of the print looks better than I have ever seen it before.

Bottom line: this SUPER SNOOPER version was probably released in England and/or Canada in 1980, and is the cut of the film seen on this DVD. The SUPER FUZZ version that was released theatrically in the US in 1981 is the version we all remember from Showtime and the VHS and earlier DVD release. Clearly, as noted above, there are major differences and thus this DVD will disappoint many fans such as myself who have the previous versions.

On a side note, the extras are worthless. There are some production stills included, along with trailers and clips from other Terence Hill movies. No Super Fuzz trailer or director commentaries, contradicting what was stated in the specs on Amazon and other sites.

Buy this DVD only if you don't have the VHS or previous DVD release. Despite the improved picture quality, this version has too many differences that distracted me from enjoying it very much. I doubt I will watch this version ever again.

Hopefully another studio will put out a quality version of the film that we all love and remember.

This Is NOT Super Fuzz. This is Super Snooper.......2007-03-07

I was so excited to finally have Super Fuzz on DVD in widescreen. Sadly my joy only lasted as long as it took me to unwrap the DVD. I was all giddy as the DVD started up. The menu screen looked fantastic and as soon as I hit play, it all went downhill. At first I was amazed at the movie in widescreen, and then it happened. The main title of the movie came up SUPER SNOOPER. My heart sank deep into my chest. Super Snooper is what the movie is called in Europe and sure enough, the version of the film on this DVD is the super bizarro UK version that I already have on a DVD I imported from England.

A note to anyone reading, THIS IS NOT THE SUPER FUZZ YOU WATCHED AS A KID. This version of the movie is full of odd extra scenes. That sounds like a plus, but what absolutely kills this version of the movie is the fact that the voiceovers are completely different. Aside from Ernest Borgnine, just about everyone's voice is different from the US version. Most offensively are the voices of Paradise (who sounds like a stereotypical bad guy from Mexico, a banditio if you will) and the main character himself, Dave Speed.

Maybe I'm just being too picky, but I simply cannot watch this version of Super Fuzz. I want the version I'm so familiar with, I want the US version! I will admit that the picture quality on this DVD is fantastic. I never thought Super Fuzz could look this good. But I will probably never watch this version ever again, so all the picture quality in the world doesn't really mean much. There was some weird pseudo-bootleg version of Super Fuzz for sale on Amazon a year or so ago. I have that and although the picture quality leaves a lot to be desired, at least the movie on it is actually Super Fuzz and not Super Snooper. If I were you, I'd hunt around for that version.

Action in Beantown.......2005-08-24

A lot of action and a lot of humor is well represented in this movie about the Boston Police Department trying to solve a crime network led by a "deaf" man played by Yul Brynner. The portrayal of Boston police officers is typical of real Boston police officers where one would find a non-English speaker trying to communicate with a desk sergeant as the precinct was undergoing repainting - apple green? - and wet paint splattering all over desks and paperwork as two sarcastic painters hamper the duties of officers who later get into trouble with theft.

Burt Reynolds stars as Steve "Fuzz" Carella who leads the case. Raquel Welch stars as Eileen McHenry who, also, was involved in the case. The amazing thing is that you never see Reynolds and Welch together since, in reality, Welch disliked Reynolds because of some derogatory comment he made that offended her, so while at the precinct or on the case you always saw them separately.

One of the best scenes was the phone tapping complete with Italian-speakers and a suspicious caller who didn't want to discuss anything over the phone. It was in this scene when a telephone man made a racial slur that resulted in him getting punched in another room which you don't see, although the door is open.

A very good movie that is worth watching.

Early FUZZ feature -a Sleeper setting pace for TV cop shows!.......2000-10-18

FUZZ is a forgotten classic.Reynolds is just one of the stars, not the only one in this fun movie. Sets the pace for the early TV cop shows to come. Welch is beautiful and all the cast are wonderful.Edited for TV, the original feature movie had Detectives Skerrit and Welch in a sleeping bag scene in a park as man and wife, as they wait for a crook to show up. She says,"wow, is that your gun?" Another scene when a telephone man is putting in a tap for a black detective and says to him."Yeah, you are a pretty good Ni....,unlike so many others I have known." That is a shocker , especially at the time of the release..the black detective follows the phone man off camera and and you hear a smack, and knockout blow.And Brynner as the main thug boss and Detective chief Jack Weston are both suprises. Fast moving with lots of things going on and one of my all time favorites that was originally slammed when originally released. If you haven't seen it, you are in for a treat!(--and be sure to keep your eye on the painters!)

A must see for fans of the "87th Precinct"........1999-08-25

Ed McBain's long running series of mystery novels (from 1957 to this year!) about the quirky cops of an inner city precinct comes to glorious life in this movie.Quite funny in places, with suprising spurts of violence, a very well done movie!Note: When this movie aired on ABC back in the 70's, it recieved a lot of flack for inspiring a real-life violent incident in Boston, causing more nattering about the "violence on TV".

i had to order this movie 2 times,the 1st time ,igot the totally wrong movie,and i was told by amazon that i had to wait till the 17th of march to file a complaint or whatever with them to get my money back from the first order,.and i did my first order in decmber,pretty long time for help from a major web retailer like amazon.i got my 2nd order promply,and it was the correct movie this time.just too bad i ended up paying for this movie 2 times,plus shipping,not a very good experience with amazon,or its affiliates.and most likely will never order anything thru this website ever again.

i gave this 3 stars because my boys like this movie, just as i did growing up,but it doesn't hold up very well to me now. still a nice family movie with nothing to bad for kids to see.

In the early 1980's HBO would play this movie as often as they possibly could, it seemed. That was fine with me, I was a young child and this movie would capture my interest every time. Years later I was lucky enough to find a used VHS in bad condition in a video rental store, but wanted to see it again so badly that I purchased it off of their shelf. It was worth it. The tape broke shortly thereafter and I have been searching for it on DVD for a long time. Finally I found it on Amazon.com and to be honest, I debated about the price. Did I really want to spend over $20 for a movie made well over 20 years ago? I decided to make the purchase, and I have to say, the movie is as great as I remember. Very worth the price. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes superhero type films, or perhaps even comedy.
