Like The Gumball Rally (1976) before it, former stuntman Hal Needham's The Cannonball Run was inspired by the same real-life cross-country road race. If The Gumball Rally was the critical favorite, The Cannonball Run was the box-office favorite (spawning the almost-as-successful sequel, Cannonball Run II, a few years later). Aside from top-billed stars Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise (stars of Needham's Smokey and the Bandit series) plus Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. (as horny priests), the movie features many of the same actors (Bert Convy, Jamie Farr) that could be found on a typical '80s episode of The Love Boat (along with the same caliber of writing). But as the tagline notes, "You'll never guess who wins"--and it's true. As in most road-race movies, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. This particular journey includes cool cars (like Adrienne Barbeau's black Lamborghini), crazed bikers (led by Peter "Easy Rider" Fonda), hot martial arts action (from Jackie Chan as a Japanese racecar driver), a conspicuously braless Farrah Fawcett (recipient of a Golden Raspberry nomination for her performance), and possibly the most egregious use of product placement featured in a movie up until that time (one vehicle has "GMC Trucks" noted prominently along the top of the windshield, another has "Hawaiian Tropic" painted on the hood). As with many of the films Jackie Chan has made for Golden Harvest, the Hong Kong-based production company behind The Cannonball Run, wacky outtakes are included during the closing credits. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

A wide variety of characters participate in an illegal cross-country road race. It's a hilarious comedic chase as the eccentric participants are willing to do anything to win.

3 out of 5 stars Cannon Ball Run - Review.......2007-07-20

Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Peter Fonda, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Jackie Chan are all entrants in an illegal cross-country car race, and all are willing to do anything to win. Chockablock with cool cars, fast driving, wacky hi-jinx and sexual innuendos, this crowd pleaser from former stuntman Hal Needham is based on an actual car race (which the director and writer both entered driving the ambulance seen in the film).

4 out of 5 stars Screwy Fun!.......2007-03-29

I have never understood the critical dogging of this film. What were people expecting to see? It's a low-budget, screwball comedy that is just fun to watch. You could tell that the actors were just having a good time and it helps to make the film that fun to watch. As such, the performances aren't that bad. For example, try to watch Jack Elam in this and picture him in all of those serious, nasty villian roles he had in westerns. Sammy Davis and Dean Martin working together is almost worth the price alone. Their great chemistry is apparent. Frank Sinatra wanted to be in the sequel after seeing them in this. Roger Moore may have only been doing a parody of himself, but I have always wanted to see him do more comedy. He was known for helping to maintain a light-hearted atmosphere during the long filming of the Bond pictures. Also, this is the only one of Jackie Chan's (who actually does race cars) early Hollywood films that shows his talent for mixing martial arts and comedy. Who cares if he doesn't look japanese (which his character is supposed to be). Hollywood wouldn't realize what they had been missing until the success of Rush Hour. Hal Needam (Smokey and the Bandit) was just making a film to entertain, not educate or win oscars. And, it worked. Fast cars, laughs and great looking ladies (Adrienne Barbeau, yow!). I have grown tired of critics reviewing all films under the same guidelines instead of for what they are. I would have given it five stars but it was not quite as laugh-a-minute as some of the works of Blake Edwards, Billy Wilder and Buster Keaton and I would have liked to seen more car stunts.

It was time for Sylvester Stallone to say "enough, already" to the boxing hero he plays in the popular Rocky film series, but instead Stallone kept the saga going by pushing Rocky into Rambo territory. The 1985 Rocky IV finds the Italian stallion pitted against a seemingly unbeatable Russian monster named Drago (Dolph Lundgren) who lets his wife (Stallone's then-wife, Brigitte Nielsen) do all the talking. With a mighty punch, Drago has sent Rocky's former opponent and trainer Apollo Creed to an early grave, and the boxer responds with the ultimate challenge. Even the Russians are rooting for Rocky, so it's not hard to guess how the film ends. Despite Stallone's claims to the contrary, this installment was followed by Rocky V in 1990. --Jeff Shannon

Description

East meets West when Rocky takes on a vicious Soviet fighter who literally killed his last opponent! Sylvester Stallone writes, directs and stars in this war between nations in which the only battle is fought in a boxing ring. Rocky Balboa (Stallone) proudly holds the world heavyweight boxing championship, but a new challenger has stepped forward: Drago (Dolph Lundgren), a six-foot-four-inch, 261-pound fighter who has the backing of the Soviet Union. This time, Rocky's training regimentakes him to icy Siberia, where he prepares for a globally televised match in the heart of Moscow. But nothing can truly prepare him for what he's about to facea powerfully charged fight to the finish in which he must defend not only himself, but also the honor of his country!

4 out of 5 stars A question of honor and something else!.......2007-06-19

Rocky IV meant (as no other sequel a symbol of power in the huge geopolitical staggering U.R.S.S. The metaphor is so obvious that hardly may be better described. This time Rocky has to make an act of justice when his friend Apollo Creed dies in combat against Ivan Drago, the new Soviet techno machine, a sort of Caucasian Terminator; Apollo was in fact his past rival in Rocky II, helped professional and spiritually to win that infernal combat in the third sequel.

In this opportunity the chances are against him, Drago is a merciless and menacing fighter, who embodies the spirit of a nation, historically adverse to the Western hemisphere.

Sylvester Stallone didn't waste this historical opportunity to carve in relief two different ways of thinking, living and fighting.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty low on the Rocky list........2007-06-17

I rank the Rocky films this way, from best to worst:
Rocky
Rocky Balboa
Rocky II
Rocky III
Rocky IV
Rocky V (can we all just pretend that one never happened?)
Note that my top two are the ones in which Rocky lost the fight, but won something bigger. Those films were not just good boxing movies, but good movies, period.
Rocky IV is not exacly horrible, but it's certainly not good. Some of it is downright stupid; what idiot writer put in the robot that has artificial intelligence? (Rocky: "I'll get the call inside." Robot: "You can get it right here!"). The James Brown extravaganza, with Apollo dancing in a really, really silly outfit, was just plain weird. Then there's the fact that Drago's 1400 psi punch killed Apollo -- but later he doubled the power to 2800 psi, and despite jackhammering Rocky with that superhuman power over and over and over, Rocky just kept walking into more punches. And the worst part of all was Rocky's "can't we all just get along" speech to the Russian crowd, which switched its allegiance from Drago to Rocky because...because... well, I don't know why they cheered wildly for the guy who beat their national idol. Because the script called for it, I guess.
In the end, I think this movie is a classic "guilty pleasure". It's fun to watch the Rocky/Drago training montage (which could also be viewed as a metaphor for human will triumphing over machine perfection), and it's also fun to get a little Cold War nostalgia, so to speak, with the American ordinary guy loner beating the product of Soviet technology. Fun to watch? Yeah. Great movie? No.

2 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome Cold War Propaganda!.......2007-05-08

To say that Rocky IV is propaganda is a bold understatement. From the opening bell of Rocky IV we are fed repeated anti-soviet and pro-US messages. The obvious arrogance, rampant drug use and lack of freedoms the Russians display here are not antagonistic as much as they are downright degrading and completely inaccurate. Every Soviet character acts as if they are a pathetically corrupt villain, that is until they are shown the path of the righteous man by our hero Rocky Balboa both in and out of the ring in a shameless speech that shows us what this film is really about. The Russian people find their liberation in their love for the American underdog Rocky. Rocky III had a subtle message of money spoiling good ol' Rock into losing his title and regaining it when he found the fire that existed in being a real underdog (a poor New Yorker who had nothing but his ability to fight). Rock IV gives us a message that is the antithesis of this and gives blind justification for hating our enemies for trivial and inaccurate reasons, in other words the legacy of Rocky took more than a few steps back.

In this, the third sequel to the original classic about a kid from south Philly who gets a shot at the champion Appollo Creed. By now in the series, Rock has been champion and is friends now with Apollo and when Ivan Drago (a giant Russian boxer played by Dolph Lundgren) comes along, Apollo comes out of retirement to show this commie who is boss. Drago beats him to death in the ring and Rocky now knows what he needs to do. Stop commies! I mean, avenge his friend's death.

Its amusing to say the least as now the U.S.S.R. is no more and the damages of misled messages are inconsequential as the only people who could be swayed by such nonsense have already been swayed by our culture. It's vexing indeed but Rocky IV wins me over because I laugh every time it's on television. That is no reason to call it a good movie though. It so shamelessly sets the stage for the ultimate in melodrama and underdog cliches that only a child would find this believable. It is pornographic propaganda really, I put it right in there with Reefer Madness.

As a character, Rocky does represent something of America in all of his films (though I haven't seen the fifth one entirely). He is the quintessential underdog; he is a simple man that made his way through life by being a good person and doing what he knew how to do for his family. That feels like America for many of us. On the other hand he represents us as well in a different light in Rocky IV; he is the shameless symbol that represents what blind nationalism and unregulated globalization can bring without justifying it's reason, by the film's end the Russians are as blindly proud as the American's who possess unconditional love for their ever-serving government. It doesn't represent the left or the right but simply put, it represents those who can't learn because they think they already know. It represents the ignorant and just plain stupid and who could be their hero, or as Mr. T. once said, their paper champion. There are means and ends in life and conflict is the means to serve what end? Rocky IV promotes the kind of thought that is too arrogant to bother answering such a question.

But you know something? It's so shameless, unintentional, and fun that I don't give a damn and I begin chanting "Rocky" (or was it "Bocky") right along side those newly allied ex-communists every single time I see Rocky IV. Capitalism rocks comrade!

5 out of 5 stars Fast Delivery.......2007-05-07

I haven't actually watched this movie yet but I received it very quickly.

3 out of 5 stars Starts well but finishes poorly.......2007-03-22

I really liked the first part of this movie, but everything after he starts training for the fight I could do without. The bland training in Russia in all that snow, and the fight itself weren't that great to me. Then he spews some sort of political message that ends up sounding retarded. Huge Rocky fan, but this is not one of my favs. It gets 3 starts because it has heart, great production quality and I could watch Rocky grocery shopping and be happy, he's just that good of a character.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't anyone like the orangutang?.......2007-01-16

This movie isn't that bad. Basically it's a vehicle for alot of stars to get together and act stupid. Knowing that,it might be a little easier to take. Maybe not. I like this movie.Nobody ever mentions the parts w/ the orangutang and Goerge Lindsay...HILARIOUS!!!! I'm older {43} I guess you have to be 70's generation to appreciate this.

1 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Vanity Film.......2006-08-11

Justly forgotten, "Cannonball Run II" (1984) is a glorified home movie that displays its all-star cast in a spectacularly poor light. Production values are nonexistent and the anticipated Rat Pack reunion (with Frank Sinatra barely showing up) falls woefully flat. After sinking to the depths of "Stroker Ace," Burt Reynolds and director Hal Needham end their screen partnership on a truly wretched note. Recommended only for sadomasochistic film buffs.

3 out of 5 stars For the Fans.......2006-06-26

If you loved the first Cannonball then you'll love the second; in fact if you liked the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies then you like "Cannonball."

In my humble opinion, this is a good movie, not a great movie. One that you can watch over and over again, but won't neccessarly be your first choice when picking one out.

If you're a fan or this era of movie or Burt Reynolds then you should get this movie.

burt and friends are back again, and i want to know why! i was given these two movies by a coworker andwhile i thank him for the gift,i don't have the heart to tell him what a piece of junk these two movies are.
the "PLOT" such as it is,burt and friends drive fast, fight, drink, drive fast somemore, wreck some cars, and thats it! the race comes at the end as a cartoon, i kid you not. the much talked about frank santara scenes were shot withy frank only and then cut into the movie, and it shows badly.
not one laugh or even chuckle to be found in this mess.the large list of "guest stars" looks great till you notice that these same stars were on love boat every other week till it was droped from the line up.
movies like this is what sent burt into a tailspin in the 80's.

The Gumball Rally was a great movie. Any one into cars will watch it over and over again. I watched the car scenes over an over again. Cannonball Run II was not as good as the first one. But the cars alone make it worth watching. Same characters as the first one make it worth watching.

Cannonball is 100% car-crashin', gas-guzzlin', tire-squealin', '70s-style fun courtesy of executive producer Roger Corman and director Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul). Inspired by the success of Bartel's Death Race 2000, Corman commissioned him to direct this down-and-dirty adventure comedy about an illegal transcontinental car race and the eccentrics who compete for its $100,000 prize. Leading the pack is David Carradine, who's brought his sexy parole officer (Hill Street Blues' Veronica Hamel) along for the ride; hot on his tail are scurrilous Bill McKinney (Deliverance), cult queen Mary Woronov, and a host of marvelous character actors. Bartel also dots Cannonball with cameos by Corman, Sylvester Stallone, co-writer Don Simpson, and numerous fellow filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, and Allan Arkush, all of whom were in Corman's New World stable at the time. Undeniably lowbrow, but also unquestionably exciting and far more entertaining than Burt Reynolds' Cannonball Run pictures (which borrowed wholesale from this film), Cannonball offers plenty of thrills for cult movie enthusiasts. Blue Underground's DVD includes theatrical and TV spots and bemused interviews with Carradine, Corman and Woronov. --Paul Gaita

2 out of 5 stars "Hit the gas,Grasshopper!".......2006-09-08

Before David Carradine experienced a career revival of sorts in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" movies&crossed swords with The Bride,Uma Thurman,he was Cannonball,A Man on the Run.

The plot is completely nonsensical;it involves a cross-country race.David Carradine gets helped by car geeks, has a strange convenience store brawl, shows off his chest for no reason whatsoever&a squeaky voiced Marilyn Monroe lookalike goes to bed with an unpleasingly plump bad guy.

Okay,it's a cross country race,David Carradine has to win to clear his name--it's good dumb fun.Need I say more?

4 out of 5 stars Good For Car Fans.......2006-07-10

David Carradine did a solid job, but some of the supporting actors were poor to fair. I did't even notice Stalone. It was great for watching the cars though, and even gave me some feelings of nostalgia, with so many '60's and '70's cars. Early on there was a gorgeous DeTomaso Pantera making some nice sounds. Lots of almost constant driving, some crashes, and a criminal subplot (which was no big deal). If you love cars, look for a low price, and I think you'll have some fun.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Laserdiscs - dvds Movies Collector........2006-04-28

Cannonball is one of my Favorite dvds 70s movies,I love this movie,I've watched it much, you will love it too, give it a try :)

3 out of 5 stars Cool cars, crazy storyline.......2006-03-10

The title about says it all. It makes ya cringe a little watching them beat up the "classics". But as with alot of 70's movies they just put the car on full out and let the cameras roll. You should see it once just for the cars.

3 out of 5 stars Yet ANOTHER Corman car picture.......2005-04-23

I recently found myself facing down yet another Roger Corman classic with "Cannonball." Hmmm. I'm starting to detect a troubling pattern here. Every time I turn around, it seems like I'm popping another Corman disc into the DVD player. What gives? It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I'm trying to watch as many b-movie clunkers as possible before shuffling off this mortal coil. Too, I consider it my mission in life--at least at this point in my life--to review as many of these things as possible in order to warn the unwary what to expect should they find themselves stuck in a b-movie situation. What happens if you, a filmgoer only familiar with big budget studio releases that play in thousands of theaters across the country on opening night, should wind up watching a Roger Corman film? Maybe your boss loves these sorts of movies and you want to suck up for a raise. Maybe someone you want to impress has an insatiable craving for crud cinema. If so, I feel sorry for you. You'll have to give up repeated viewings of "Cold Mountain" in order to watch Troma flicks and Italian horror movies. Seek counseling immediately. Maybe you can find a new job and/or new friends.

Before losing all hope, however, you might want to test the waters with "Cannonball." It's not a bad film, actually, although it doesn't have the mega-stars found in the "Cannonball Run" films, two movies that also take as their central premise a cross-country car race. In this picture, directed by cult movie god Paul Bartel, David Carradine stars as Coy "Cannonball" Buckman, a down on his luck ex-con looking to break into the big time by winning the biggest road race of them all. Problem is, Buckman isn't supposed to spend any time behind the wheel thanks to the terms of his parole. Yeah right. Trying to keep a guy like Coy away from souped up jalopies is like trying to keep a fat woman away from chocolate ice cream. Nonetheless, his sexy parole officer Linda Maxwell (Veronica Hamel slumming for a paycheck) tries hard to keep her charge out of trouble. But Buckman is going to race, bet your bottom dollar, no matter what the cost. His older brother needs his help, and Coy needs to feel those miles melting off the highway if even for a few hours. With the assistance of his trusty sidekick Zippo (Archie Hahn) and the unwilling participation of Maxwell, Coy Buckman heads west from California to New York at a thousand miles an hour.

Of course every racing film needs a cast of crackpots driving the other cars, and in this "Cannonball" provides plenty of oddballs trying to make their own mark in the race. We've got Coy's snarling archnemesis Cade Redman (Bill McKinney) dragging along country singer Perman Waters (Gerrit Graham) for some inexplicable reason. We've got ultrahot cutie Mary Woronov driving a van full of babes. We've got a European snob named Wolfe Messer (James Keach) busting everyone's chops in the fastest car. We've got a touchy feely young couple, Jim Crandell (Robert Carradine) and his woman Maryann (Belinda Balaski), zipping along in the hopes that the reward money will give them a start in life. There is also the inevitable chap who thinks he'll win by cheating and a black guy racing in a town car that doesn't even belong to him. Just in case the cast of loonies fails to keep you entertained, Bartel himself shows up as a piano-tinkling mobster who is pulling some crooked tricks behind the scenes. What follows is typical in the crash 'em smash 'em genre: lots of fiery wrecks, down and dirty tricks, a few fistfights, romance, and a keep 'em guessing ending. The only thing "Cannonball" is missing is Burt Reynolds and Jackie Gleason.

This movie offers us nothing we haven't seen in other films. While it is superior to Corman's other racing films, namely Ron Howards's "Grand Theft Auto" and "Eat My Dust," it isn't as much fun as "Death Race 2000." That movie, also lensed by Bartel and containing much of the same cast as "Cannonball," possessed many things lacking here. "Death Race" was more violent, the cars were "futuristic" and therefore cheesier, and the underlying plot more interesting. There isn't much of a plot in this movie once you get beyond the Coy Buckman character. He went to jail after taking the fall for his friend Zippo, and now he wants to race in order to restore his former glory. The idea that his brother is working behind the scenes to save himself from the clutches of Bartel's gangster character forces our hero to make a painful choice when he finally discovers the nasty truth behind the race. Or something sappy like that. Did I mention lots of stuff blows up and a few people die in fiery wrecks? Good, because that's likely the only thing you will take away from "Cannonball." Thank goodness Corman moved on to ripping off other types of genre films shortly after this picture came out.

The DVD is pretty much what one expects with a Roger Corman release. Included for your viewing pleasure are a trailer for the film, television spots, and a poster and still gallery. Interviews with Mary Woronov, Corman, and David Carradine add a bit of backstory to the production. For example, Woronov explains that she didn't know how to drive, so Bartel and company had to shoot all of her scenes in close up lest she kill everyone involved. I recommend "Cannonball" to Corman completists and car racing film aficionados, but all others should probably stick to the corny "Cannonball Run" pictures. Not that they're any better, mind you, but they are a cut above this film in some respects.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable.......2007-04-10

What a PERFECT live performance! It sounds as it's been recorded in studio and looks like it has required 10 takes to shoot the video ;)
And "Parallel Lives" mini-movie opens us some secrets of Savage Garden world...
It's worth every cent given for this DVD, and it's a pity when the concert's over!

4 out of 5 stars For anyone who has never seen them live................2006-03-05

I have been a fan of Savage Garden's for ten years and it is so sad that I never really got to see them live. When I got this DVD I was determined to see them live onstage, and to see them backstage, It is quite nice to see them as two down-to-earth guys with an ambivalence to fame and celebrity, and you get to see Darren at his silliest (He's just awesomely cute that way). The concert itself was an amazing experience "Gunning Down Romance" was a bit melodramatic for me, and Darren went all Elvis with "Chained to You", and the best thing about the concert was at the end after they sang "Affirmation" that the audience was deluged with balloons at the concerts end. It was so awesome, I wish I could've been there.I'm gonna miss these guys together, but hopefully one day they'll get back together if only for one song.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ever!!.......2006-03-01

I am so glad that I had purchased this video! It is amazing. Darren's voice is amazing, and he performs so well. Daniel rocks out on his guitar, and the two play around a little on stage.

They perform seventeen(17) songs, from both albums. There is great special features, including: Selected Multi-Angle songs, Parallel Lives - documentary, Commentary and pop-up video and audio, and three(3) bonus music videos; "I Knew I Loved You" Crash And Burn" and "Affirmation".

During the performance of "Hold Me" Darren picks out a girl from the audience to do just that - hold him! It's so cool, and exciting.

"I Don't Know You Anymore" "Santa Monica" "Two Beds And A Coffee Machine" and "You Can Still Be Free" are performed with Darren alone on vocals, (no back-up singers) and Daniel providing the music with a piano.

The Back-up singers are great, too. They all have great chemestry. You can tell that they all are friends off-stage. Plus, one of the back-up singers has a "Crush" on Darren. They perform with him on the song "Chained To You". A little Elvis style, dancing and alot of crotch action. While at the end of the song Darren assures the audience that his "Crotch wasn't harmed in anyway, it's only show business."

A definite buy. I can't stop watching it!!

5 out of 5 stars The complete Savage Garden experience on DVD.......2005-11-21

Taken from the Brisbane concert on the Affirmation World Tour of 2000, "Superstars and Cannonballs" captures the amazing energy of Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones onstage as well as behind-the-scenes. The very complete concert portion features a mix of songs from Savage Garden (Break Me Shake Me, I Want You, Santa Monica, To The Moon And Back, Truly Madly Deeply) and Affirmation (The Best Thing, The Lover After Me, Hold Me, Two Beds and a Coffee Machine, Crash and Burn, You Can Still Be Free, The Animal Song, Gunning Down Romance, Chained To You, I Knew I Loved You, Affirmation), clocking in at a hefty 110 minutes. The concert can be played all the way through or you can select individual songs.

Also included is the band's commentary, displayed via a pop-up window in the lower right-hand corner of the screen regarding their feelings on the new songs from Affirmation, three music videos (two studio versions of Crash and Burn and I Knew I Loved You and a concert montage of Affirmation), several multi-angle songs, a discography, and the intriguing documentary "Parallel Lives" that traces Savage Garden's roots in Brisbane (Darren revisits his childhood home with original carpet and fence), life on the road, the price of fame, and silly moments with the band. We see Darren at press conferences and meet and greets, and it's clear from both Darren and Daniel how much their fans mean to them personally and not just as (Australian) dollar signs.

Special mention goes to the awesome title menu. So often, boring, static backgrounds are used, but there is a minute-long animation of fascinating imagery (Russian religious icons, tribal sculptures, botanical prints) that introduces the DVD and the concert itself. The concert is beautifully photographed as well, with the mind-boggling lighting and special effects. A real treat for Savage Garden fans and anyone looking for those elusive "Finally, a concert DVD done justice!" moments.

5 out of 5 stars Must buy!.......2005-07-09

This is great for anyone who has never saw Savage Garden live! I loved the concert and the little backstage moments are the BEST!! Darren Hayes is quite the funny guy and Daniel is definitely much quieter. It's great though. Definitely a must have for any SG fan.
