First screened in Europe and scheduled for limited release in the U.S., The Illusionist offers welcome proof that "arthouse" quality needn't be limited to the arthouses. Set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, this stately, elegant period film benefited from a crossover release in mainstream cinemas, and showed considerable box-office staying power--granted, teenage mallrats and lusty males may have been drawn to the allure of Seventh Heaven alumna Jessica Biel, who rises to the occasion with a fine performance. But there's equal appeal in the casting of Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti, who bring their formidable talents to bear on the intriguing tale of a celebrated magician named Eisenheim (Norton) whose stage performance offends the Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell), a vindictive lout who aims to marry Duchess Sophie (Biel), Eisenheim's childhood friend and now, 15 years later, his would-be lover. This romantic rivalry and Eisenheim's increasingly enigmatic craft of illusion are investigated by Chief Inspector Uhl (Giamatti), who's under Leopold's command and is therefore not to be trusted as Eisenheim and Sophie draw closer to their inevitable reunion. Cleverly adapted by director Neil Burger from Steven Millhauser's short story "Eisenheim the Illusionist," and boasting exquisite production values and a fine score by Philip Glass, The Illusionist is the kind of class act that fully deserved its unusually wide and appreciative audience. -- Jeff Shannon

Description
Unlock the mysteries of the year's most spellbinding film from the producers of Crash and Sideways! Oscar(r) nominees Paul Giamatti and Edward Norton lead an all-star cast in this "stunning" film (USA Today) that conjures an exhilarating blend of suspense, romance and mind-bending twists. The acclaimed illusionist Eisenheim (Norton) has not only captured the imaginations of all of Vienna, but also the interest of the ambitious Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). But when Leopold's new fiancée (Jessica Biel) rekindles a childhood fascination with Eisenheim, the Prince's interest evolves into obsession...and suddenly the city's Chief Inspector (Giamatti) finds himself investigating a shocking crime. But even as the Inspector engages him in a dramatic challenge of wills, Eisenheim prepares for his most impressive illusion yet in this "mesmerizing" (Entertainment Weekly) and "beautifully acted" (Good Morning America) film that "teases you until the very end!" (The New York Times).

One of the Best Ever.......2007-09-10
Sheer pleasure! The acting, the plot and the photography are among the best ever! It has so many facets that it warrants seeing more than one.
Edward Norton's finest performance.
In A Word: Classy.......2007-09-09
Boy, this was a beautifully-filmed movie, just gorgeous from first to last frame. Almost as impressive was the story, a fantasy-mystery- romance-drama combination set in Vienna, Austria, around the turn of the 20th century.
It is a story that should keep most viewers intrigued all the way and perhaps surprised quite a bit at the end. Edward Norton does his normal job of making you fascinated with whatever character he's playing, this time a magician with almost supernatural powers: "Herr Eisenheim." The character he plays, and the tone of the movie in general, is pretty low-key with next to nothing in violence or profanity.
It's simply a classy film and a modern-day one that older folks would very much enjoy as well as younger adults. I haven't talked to anybody yet who watched this and didn't like it.
Haunting and Ingenious.......2007-09-04
A very fine picture, with a first rate performance by Paul Giamatti -- his best, in fact. As Inspector Uhl, an amateur conjurer who idolizes the magician whose career he has been ordered to destroy, he nearly steals the picture, but aside from a few minor quibbles, it has been so cleverly written and directed by Neil Burger, and is full of so many good performances, that this doesn't quite happen.
As Eisenheim, the Illusionist, Edward Norton gives a wonderful performance, but he's saddled with the only scenes in the picture that don't work: the love scenes, which, curiously, are shot almost entirely in close-up, so that no chemistry ever develops between him and the woman who is supposedly the love of his life. At times, one gets the impression that he and his leading lady filmed their scenes without actually being together in the same room. As that woman, Jessica Biel is pretty & looks well in her bodices and petticoats, but her character is very nearly a cipher. As the half-mad Crown Prince Leopold, Rufus Sewell gives a broad, roaring performance in the old tradition of Hollywood villains from the Golden Age. He's a combination of Basil Rathbone and Conrad Veidt -- and immensely entertaining every moment he's on screen.
Filmed on location in and around Prague, "The Illusionist" looks gorgeous: the production design of is one of its greatest assets.
As is his wont, Philip Glass lets his music burble away murkily without ever arriving at -- or even approaching -- a climax (orchestral blue-balls, I call it); on the other hand, the endless repetitiveness of his strings produces a nice sense of menace, ennui and claustrophobia entirely appropriate to the story it underscores.
All in all, a thoroughly entertaining and haunting picture that stands up admirably on repeated viewings. Highly recommended.
Beautifully done movie.......2007-08-26
I loved the premise of this movie. Great people behind as well as infront of the camera! I felt that Jessica Biel couldn't quiet hold her own against some of the acting greats here but that may come with time, I think she's only 22. And I did feel she was out of place being in the story they grew up together but she's obviously 10 years younger or more. Other than that almost completely seemless work! Great movie.
NOT THE PRESTIGE, BUT NOT BAD.......2007-08-18
I didn't know quite what to expect from this film..frankly, im not a huge fan of Norton and Jessica Beil is no Meryle Streep, but I was pleasantly surprised with this movie, the pace is good, and Norton is very good, as is Giamatti, whom I always like. Rufus Sewell is very good as usual playing the villian, he has this flinty quality that really works well in this film. The twist is very good and i really didnt see it coming. Highly recomended..though i must advise you to watch the Prestige after this movie..when you see them you will understand why..hint:..The Prestige is much better movie.

Most people didn't mind Gwyneth Paltrow's English accent in this charming, 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel (which also inspired Clueless). But even if it doesn't sound quite right to you, there are plenty of authentic and wonderful Brit thespians in this film by screenwriter-turned-director Douglas McGrath (co-author of Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway), including Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply), Alan Cumming (Buddy), Phyllida Law (Much Ado About Nothing), Ewan McGregor (the Scots star of Trainspotting), and Sophie Thompson, outstanding and finally heartbreaking as the chattering Miss Bates. Paltrow plays Austen's benign busybody, Emma Woodhouse--so busy trying to arrange the lives of others that she is sidestepping her own. McGrath brings a kind of pretty and light touch to the production, his best move the wise delegation of creative authority to the actors themselves. --Tom Keogh
Description
This delightfully fun and lighthearted comedy is based on the story that inspired the hit movie CLUELESS! Dazzling Gwyneth Paltrow (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) shines as EMMA, a mischievous young beauty who sets up her single friends. Funny thing is ... she's not very good at it! So when Emma tries to find a man for Harriet (Toni Collette -- THE SIXTH SENSE, ABOUT A BOY), she makes a hilariously tangled mess of everyone's lives. You'll enjoy all the comic confusion ... until Emma herself falls in love, finally freeing everyone from her outrageously misguided attempts at matchmaking.
Customer Reviews:
Adorable!.......2007-08-21
I adore Jane Austen and this version of Emma is spot on. The acting is wonderful and the fact that Gwenyth Paltrow is not really british doesn't even come to play because she is fantastic in this. A very witty, charming fun movie that any Austen fan will love. And that Mr. Nightly..........................sigh
One of my favorites!.......2007-08-16
I absolutely adore Emma, it is witty, funny, and adorable. The costumes are excellent (I in fact made a replica of Emma's pink archery gown) and the set is absolutely amazing. Anyone will feel right at home in Highbury with Emma and her friends.
great fun............2007-08-11
I remember seeing this film on the big screen, when it was first released in 1996. I was on a total Jane Austen kick. I think I saw just about every film adaptation of her novels (with the exception of PERSUASION), and was looking forward to how this version would fare. I am happy to say that Gwyneth Paltrow embodies the title character of Emma charmingly. The upperclass matchmaker [and mischiefmaker] proceeds to set people up, shake up naysayers around her and has her share of misadventures. This film will make you smile and is very cleverly executed, and the supporting cast (James Cosmo, Greta Scacchi, and Alan Cumming, among others) are strong and play off of Paltrow's spritely and fiesty Emma delightfully. What's more, cinematographically, this film was shot like a beautiful English landscape and glows with life. Lovely......
Oh Gweneth, you have captured Emma!.......2007-07-22
I had saved this production of Emma for the last and was surprised at what I had missed when reading the book! This was so true to the book and so wonderfully done that I will watch it over and over I am sure. It made the book come alive for me and sparked even more of Jane's meaning for me. I could see how Emma felt through Gwyneth's wonderful portrayal. I have never known Gweneth to be such a perfectionist as this movie truely reveals. Thank you Gwyneth!
can't get enough.......2007-07-18
I finally bought this after renting it about five times. By now I've seen it more than any other movie, I'm sure, and will never tire of it. If I'm ever having a blah week, I pop it in, and like magic, I'm cheered up. It's truly delightful.

A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-13
This movie is one of the great classics that everyone should see at least once.
quite simply the best film ever!.......2007-09-10
In my humble opinion this is the best film ever. Stellar acting and incomparable chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Paul Henreid exudes class and bravery. The incomparable Claude Rains. A witty screenplay, taut direction and an emotinal core that builds throughout the film right up to the most memorable ending of all-time. Play it again, and again and again.
Only the best!.......2007-09-09
A great movie must have certain components: (1) great acting, (2) action, (3) humor, (4) a compelling plot, and (5) a memorable song. This movie has all five and ranks, in my opinion, as the Best American Movie of the 20th Century.
Good but definitely not the best.......2007-09-06
I was very excited when i first watched this movie because it is almost on top of lists of all-time greatest movies and the reviews are like wow.. this must be really one of the best! After watching it, I was kinda disappointed because I think the story is so-so, there is no chemistry between the two lead cast (but Bergman is very lovely though). I don't know what's so special about this movie. Did I miss it or what?
Excellent movie, excellent presentation and special features.......2007-08-15
At 55 years of age, you'd think a movie lover such as myself would have seen Casablanca... but I hadn't until I bought this disc in July of 2007. If you understand what makes a finely crafted film that you can watch repeatedly and still continue to find things out about it that you love, this is one you'll enjoy immensely.
Start with the script - it is filled with tasty classic lines you'll really enjoy hearing in the context of the film. "Here's looking at you, Kid..." for example. Part of what makes all of it work is the vocal treatment by the actors in their delivery. The cast seems very comfortable with the characters they each play and so maybe that relaxed feel carries over to the degree of realism you sense when you watch it. Their dialogue does NOT seem scripted and that's hard to achieve on a consistent basis in a film. I suppose that's a big part of what's made Casablanca such a classic to all who have reviewed the work over the years.
The acting is superb across the board regardless of how small the part. Ingrid Bergman is luminescent to put it mildly. Bogie is really a powerhouse in this one, and Paul Henreid as well as Claude Rains deliver the kind of intimately detailed performances that just make you smile while you watch. Peter Lorre has a smaller part but exquisitely crafted in its execution. He makes it easy for you to hate him, let's put it that way. Sydney Greenstreet gives a solid presentation as well to round out the core ensemble performances given here.
The special features on this disc include a very nice introduction by Lauren Bacall, Bogart's widow. I watched it AFTER viewing the film as I wanted to get the same feel as audiences who originally viewed it in the theater, but I wish I had watched it first. Enlightening to say the least.
Another little gem is a series of trailers for Bogie's other movies. Great slices of the period as far as movie promotion goes! They serve as great reminders of a simpler time in America.
This particular film is a MUST HAVE for anyone's movie collection. I feel that repeated viewings year on year will only make you love it more than you did the first time. Not many films are able to do that.
I can safely say that if you, too, love truly great movies and you decide to purchase this one, it will be the start of a beautiful friendship.

When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

SAME OLD STORY NEVER TOLD SO WELL!.......2007-09-12
This sweet little love story rises above all it's cliches because of the likable stars and story that moves along briskly. The love story in sad enough, but the Alzheimer's angle really tears your heart out! I watched this because my wife wanted to watch it on our anniversary. I was surprised how much I liked it.....so guys don't squirm too much if your babe wants to watch this one, it's a good story and I admired Gosling's tenacity and devotion to his true love. One of the better romances I've seen in a while, so I rate it 4 stars, but it's definitely a 5 tissue movie! This was mostly because of the Alzheimer's part of the film, it's a tragic disease and having dealt with it in my family it was a little too close to home. The DVD transfer looks very good and the are some interesting extras.
BEST.LOVESTORY.EVER. Ryan Gosling is AMAZING!.......2007-08-31
I fell in love with not only this beautiful story but Ryan Gosling!!!! This is just a fantastic movie and I really can't find better words to describe it. Watch it. Own it. Love it forever!! It is my all-time favorite!!
I'm still a sucker.......2007-08-27
...for these tear jerkers. This movie will go down as a romance classic- a forbidden love about two people from the wrong side of the tracks-Romeo and Juliet for the 1940's, if you will. This film hits all my cheesy love spots and turn up aces with me. McAdams/Goslin were great as well as Garner and Rowland. This is a must see for all Chick movie lovers. Highly recommended.
~Have a box of tissue handy~.......2007-08-08
Although I'm not going to give away any spoilers ... this is a love story like no others. I think that everyone can relate on some level to this movie. You will fall in love with this couple & become drawn in to their story. I recommended this to my mother who after the movie called up crying her eyes out. Even my husband enjoyed this movie. If your looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry & touch your heart ... this is a must-see.
Beautiful Tale Well Told.......2007-07-25
If you haven't read the book, the movie will not leave you feeling short changed.
A marvellous story about lovers, life and loss.
Highly recommended.
If you're interested, once you watch the movie, read the book The Wedding - it is the follow up from The Notebook.
Nicholas Sparks ROCKS!!

David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Awesome considering when it was made.......2007-09-06
There are a few silly mistakes in the film, and I was suprised to see they were using blue screen already. However this is a classic drama with great strong performances. Hope someone remakes it someday.
Forever a Favorite.......2007-08-24
Have loved this movie for at least 20 years! Finally took-on the book this summer... if you haven't read it and you feel like conquering something then definitely get your hands on the book! It's a shame so many things were left out of the movie, but once you read the book, so many things are answered and it all comes together. Still, a great classic.
Nice movie.......2007-08-04
First off, I had to write a review of this because currently there are 666 reviews, and that is bad. Mine maked it 667, hurray!
Well, I liked this product. The box smells kind of nice (like anchovies a little). It came in the mail by a nice man who rang my doorbell. It was in a bigger box them and came with lots of styrofoam that came as a free gift. There are 2 discs in the box. They have different pictures on them. They can make good frisbees. Buy this product it will give you a happy day. (And the styrofoam can make a good substitute for popcorn)
One of the Best of Hollywood's Golden Time.......2007-08-03
This would be arguably the best film made during the so-called "golden years" of Hollywood. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Margaret Mitchell, the film won 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best adapted screenplay by Sidney Howard and Best Director, Vic Fleming, known more for his Oscar nomination as Best Director for the timeless, The Wizard of Oz.
I dislike using this word, but Gone with the Wind is your `quintessential' American film & story. Set wholly in the Deep South just prior, during and after the Civil War, historically the movie seemed to capture the tone, attitudes, ambience and sentimentality of the time period. Gone with the Wind managed to harness that "fighting spirit" that culturally the United States is known for...in terms of never giving up and life's essential contradictory combination of ugliness and beauty. More so, however, the film is a love story, a tragic love story and our changing times.
The last time seeing Gone with the Wind was by sheer fluke, playing at a small cinema across town. There is that captivating scene where Scarlett O'Hara (the beautiful Vivian Leigh) stands at the top of the winding staircase and sees for the first time, Rhett Butler, (Clarke Gable); the camera sweeps down the staircase for a close up at Gable's roguish smile, and still, after seventy years, the theatre filled with the sighs of women, young and old, over Clarke Gable's looks and charm - astonishing.
Sidney Howard won Best adaptation screenplay that year, (1939) but after the film was made and he was nominated, died on his farm, his tractor falling upon him. Howard was the first writer to win an Oscar posthumously from the academy...a brilliant writer.
There were many beautiful stars during the Golden Age but personally, Vivian Leigh as a child and now, so many years later, remains my ideal woman: feisty, strong, tragic and attractive till the end of her life. My other favourite role of Ms. Leigh's was in Tennessee Williams', A Street Car Named Desire, as another (tragic) character, Blanch...beautiful, extraordinary yet ultimately tragic.
One cannot write about this film without mentioning "mammy" (Hattie McDaniel) the black house servant that stayed with Miss O'Hara through it all...Hattie was the first black American actress in American film history to be nominated and win the Oscar for Best supporting actress in Gone with the Wind. As a child, her character always made me wish that she would be a family member in our household...no pretension, say's what she feels and so caring.
Although best viewed on the big screen, Gone with the Wind can be appreciated on DVD because it is that kind of timeless film that should never be forgotten.
Great - Revelatory - A must see? simply No........2007-08-01
"Gone with the Wind" is hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time, and not without reason I am sure, as it was not only a great drama, but a pivotal and exciting technical breakthrough. But the question when labeling a great movie is not only how much it resonates with old audiences and how it looks in the film history text book but how it resonates with audiences throughout time. As the 1900s progressed and social and political viewpoints became exponentially more liberal, "Gone with the Wind", the grand product that it is, feels in many ways - just as putrid and despicable as it doe great and epic. Its racism is explicit, its philosophical outlook pessimistic, its romance unromantic. Scarlett O hara, no doubt one of the great screen talents and beauties, plays a character who is thouroughly and utterly despicable, so much so that her last screen revelation that she actually loved Clark Gent after all, feels forced and unbelievable. Her attitude as a woman is courageous and admirable, but her attitude as a person is so wretched that no last dramatic lines could possibly redeem it. Take note that the movie suggests she still does not know who she loves by the end, as her last revelation is from the words of Ashley..."The answer is Tara."

Amazon.com essential video
All films take a certain suspension of disbelief. Fight Club takes perhaps more than others, but if you're willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups and 12-step meetings. True, he isn't actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), also faking her way through groups. Spiraling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), whose forthright style and no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler and the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, and then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, and things fly out of control, as Fight Club grows into a nationwide fascist group that escapes the protagonist's control.
Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Seven), is not for the faint of heart; the violence is no holds barred. But the film is captivating and beautifully shot, with some thought-provoking ideas. Pitt and Norton are an unbeatable duo, and the film has some surprisingly humorous moments. The film leaves you with a sense of profound discomfort and a desire to see it again, if for no other reason than to just to take it all in. --Jenny Brown
Customer Reviews:
One of the BEST movies ever!.......2007-09-10
This movie will move you, as will the book, but this brings the book to life. And what a life it is. It will be changed after watching Fight Club!!
A Guy Movie and so much more........2007-09-05
This gets labelled as a guy movie all the time. It's definitely one that's aimed toward guys but it's a sophisticated and well put together movie that I feel anyone could enjoy. There's points in the movie that may be too 'touchy' for females but the story well then makes up for it.
I'm not going to go into detail about the movie seeing as the number of review before mine that have, but I will go into detail about the DVD features.
David Fincher knows how to put out DVDs, this, as well as Seven (New Line Platinum Series), feature no less than 4 commentaries. Also included are plenty of feautettes, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes footage. The case is awesome just as well. This is a must have. It very well may be the best movie David Fincher ever directed.
Must Have.

A Special Monkey.......2007-08-24
When i first saw this movie, i was inspired by the scenes of the vultures torturing the young monkeys. The fact that honey mustard was used for their baptism was somewhat freightening, but the movie redeems itself when Brad Pitt (also known as Mr. Stromboli) inherits two million pounds of green roses.
An interesting oak tree once spoke to me. He held my hand. Gently. Ever so gently. And he told me that everything would be okay. Maybe it was his courage that led me to bring him into bed with me. That was painful. But his gentle caress took me to deep oceans of heavenly chocolate. The morning after was awkward. I made him scrambled eggs with turkey bacon, but he did not have a mouth. So i polished his leaves instead. Or maybe it was that he was actually a woman at heart. A purple woman.
What's the first rule of fight club?.......2007-08-24
Most people don't know the first rule of fight club. This film made me a Norton and Pitt fan. I didn't like the ending but I like the movie over all.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.

A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From Academy Award®-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor, 1987), comes an erotic tale of three young film lovers brought together by their passion for movies -- and each other. When Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green, Louis Garrel) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them, what begins as a casual friendship ripens into a sensual voyage of discovery and desire in which nothing is off limits and anything is possible. Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)
Customer Reviews:
I'll say this: it is pretty........2007-09-13
This is a very pretty film. Paris is as rich and gorgeous as ever, and the main trio of actors are beautiful (and you get to see plenty of them!) But the film suffers from a seeming need to make the characters "quirky" that winds up coming across as some cross between pretentious and weird. We got the film because it was supposed to be erotic, but...um?
I guess the bottom line is, I just didn't believe in these characters or their relationship -- it felt contrived, calculated for effect (the "shocking" relationship between the siblings, etc. And hasn't the "American falls in with decadent Europeans" thing been done to death by now?)
I'm sure if you're a fan of one or more of the actors, that's probably enough to carry you through. As I said, they are pretty, but that wasn't enough for me.
Beautiful........2007-08-24
This movie is utterly beautiful. Its beyond words as to how amazing this film actually is. Utterly disturbing yet it puts you into some sort of artsy trance. *full frontal from Michael Pitt* You so cannot go wrong with this film!!! XoXoX
The Dreamers or The Kinky?.......2007-08-24
I loved this movie! It is so packed with forbidden eroticism that it goes beyond taboo! But, it is not a bad kind of taboo.
The story centers around a young American film student studying in France. He doesn't have many friends, until one day he meets a beautiful girl at a rally and her off-standish brother. The siblings take the young American under their wing and eventually he moves in with them. It is during this time that he sees how "different" the siblings are.
During a late night bathroom run, he catches a glimpse of the brother and sister lying in the same bed nude. If you are schocked by this first erotic scene then you should definitley not watch the rest of the movie because it definitley doesn't get any milder. Although the plot is less than developed, the viewer is completely sucked in to the lives of the three major characters.
Though the siblings are weird and do things that normal brothers and sisters would never DREAM of doing, there is something extremeley natural and normal about it. As if seeing each other nude and during sexual acts is as normal as sharing a meal at the family dinner table. They portray the classic taboo of incest in a classy manner, if that is even possible.
I find myself unable to articulate just how good I thought this movie was. It shocked me from beginning to end, with behavior that I would normally find disgusting, but somehow found endearing in this movie. You just have to watch this movie for yourself!
Eva Green.......2007-08-14
The only reason to get this movie is for Eva Green. This woman has a body out of this world. She is the only reason I recommend this movie.
an extraordinary film although not for everyone.......2007-07-23
this is by far one of my favorite movies ever. i, however, tend to like movies that are very matter of fact as many french movies are, and movies that deal with sex and sexual issues. the very direct addressing of adolescent sexual awakening and confusion might be too much for people with with sex issue hang ups. but for people who are comfortable with very honest story telling this movie is a triumph.

Somewhere In Time is the story of a young writer who sacrifices his life in the present to find happiness in the past, where true love awaits him. Years later, Richard Collier is overwhelmed by a photograph of a beautiful young woman (Jane Seymour). It's silly, it's superficial, it's so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. But there's something so unabashedly gushy and entertaining about Somewhere in Time that you can't begrudge its enduring popularity. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless showings on cable TV have turned it into a dubious classic of sorts--a three-hanky weeper that anyone can enjoy as a guilty pleasure or a beloved favorite, with no apologies necessary.
In his first film after the star-making success of Superman, Christopher Reeve stars as a contemporary playwright who visits a posh hotel and sees the portrait of an actress (Jane Seymour) who had performed there in 1912. He becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and learns all he can about her, and then discovers a method of hypnotically transporting himself backward in time to meet her. "Is it ... you?" she says upon seeing the lovestruck playwright, and it's clearly a mutual attraction. But even the slightest reminder of the playwright's modern time can jar him from his seemingly real existence in the past, so his wonderful love affair is constantly just a step from being stolen away.
Based on Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return, this flaky film may strain one's tolerance for plot holes and corny romance, but it's hard to deny its lasting appeal--and let's face it, guys, it'll make wives and girlfriends swoon if they're in a tearjerker mood. --Jeff Shannon

One of the most romantic films of all time.......2007-05-31
Somewhere in Time is the movie I look to whenever someone asks me how did the whole time travel romance genre get started. The thought of finding ones soulmate living in another age has been explored many times since- but few with such passion and beauty as in Somewhere in Time. Jane Seymour is ethereal as the beautiful actress who falls for a mysterious traveller- a playwright who has come back through time to be with her. Christopher Reeve is at his most endearing- shy and yet confident. SMooth but not completely suave as a man out of time and place courting the woman he loves beyond measure.
This is a must for all die hard romantics! The music is beautiful and will always remind you of this film after you see it.

With no fewer than eight couples vying for our attention, Love Actually is like the Boston Marathon of romantic comedies, and everybody wins. Having mastered the genre as the writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones's Diary, it appears that first-time director Richard Curtis is just like his screenplays: He just wants to be loved, and he'll go to absurdly appealing lengths to win our affection. With Love Actually, Curtis orchestrates a minor miracle of romantic choreography, guiding a brilliant cast of stars and newcomers as they careen toward love and holiday cheer in London, among them the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) who's smitten with his caterer; a widower (Liam Neeson) whose young son nurses the ultimate schoolboy crush; a writer (Colin Firth) who falls for his Portuguese housekeeper; a devoted wife and mother (Emma Thompson) coping with her potentially unfaithful husband (Alan Rickman); and a lovelorn American (Laura Linney) who's desperately attracted to a colleague. There's more--too much more--as Curtis wraps his Christmas gift with enough happy endings to sweeten a dozen other movies. That he pulls it off so entertainingly is undeniably impressive; that he does it so shamelessly suggests that his writing fares better with other, less ingratiating directors. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
The best movie EVER!!!.......2007-09-08
There are so many things that I love about this movie... it would take me an hour to write them all out... so I'll sum it up by saying this- this is a movie that leaves you feeling strangely optimistic about humanity. I know that sounds silly to say about a movie, but it seriously does give you a warm and happy feeling. Everyone I've shown this movie has gone out and bought it. Truly fantastic.
Fun, funny, and wonderful.......2007-09-07
I smiled, I laughed and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! (I must be a closet romantic.) "Love Actually" runs the gamut of love stories by having several different love stories running at the same time. Each one is enjoyable. What I enjoyed the most was spotting each plot in the other stories and how they each were woven into the whole.
The DVD extras and commentary are also entertaining if you're interested in seeing how the director thinks and how each story line develops.
I won't spoil it for you, but it you're looking for a fun movie that you can watch again and again, this is it.
The Perfect Movie!.......2007-08-24
As my review title says - perfect cast, perfect music, perfect writing =
The Perfect Movie. I hope you can't "wear out" a DVD, because I've watched it so much I might just do that.
YEAH I LIKED IT.......2007-08-23
Love Actually is a movie comprised of vignettes. It is basically a story about men, their loves, their losses. The step-father who has lost his wife and his step-son who has lost his mother and who is also in love for the first time. The cuckolded husband, the poor drip who can't get laid, the married man pursued by his ammoral secretary, the new prime minister infatuated with his employee, the man secretly in love with his best friend's girl, the porn body-double who is very much a gentleman, and the aged ex-heroin addict ex-pop star. And then there is the poignant addition of the woman who is doomed to suffer unrequieted love.
The movie is fast paced and the editing of the various vignettes form an interwoven story that is funny, sad and entertaining. Hugh Grant's dance scene and Colin Firth's childish tantrum on the sidewalk when he can't get a taxi are hilarious. It's always charming to watch grown men act like little boys!
This movie isn't for children due to mimed sex scenes and naked female breasts.
In my opinion, the one vignette that stole the entire movie is the one about the aged ex-heroin addict ex-pop star staring Bill Nighy. They could have made an entire movie about this character. Most of the laughs are generated by this character as he tries to make a half-hearted come-back with a remake cover of an old song called "Love is All Around." I usually don't find older men attractive but Bill Nighy is so wonderfully weird, strange and clever in his role, that I couldn't help but find him a little bit sexy as the burned out old pop star trying to market his pathetic "turd" of a Christmas song.
This isn't Shakespeare, it's just pure, goofy fun. I'm sure if you watch this film you will be attracted to more then one of the characters and maybe even relate to them in some way.
Worth watching (maybe even more than once); don't skip this one........2007-08-22
So I don't really dig lovey-dovey movies, but this one made the cut. "Love Actually" is a pulp-fiction style movie that deals with how much love bites, but that sometimes, just sometimes, it all turns out ok. It's very well done and will likely leave you feeling better about love, life and relationships. If you check it out, be forewarned that it does have some nudity/ sex scenes, but probably not like you've ever seen before. The movie could have gotten along ok without them, but it's more meaningful than you might first suspect. Pornography IS the most impersonal, irreverent, pernicious form of nudity known to humanity. But this movie capitalizes on that fact by having two porn stars' most intimate, most sincere moment with each other develop with ALL of their clothes ON, on a doorstep, via an awkward chicken-peck on the cheek. It's brilliant. And if you pay extra close attention to the male character's dialog later on, you learn that he's really a virgin anyway. Absolutely brilliant.
If you're a thinker and a lover (and I know you can be or wanna be) you'll dig this movie.
