Customer Reviews:
Solid, man!.......2007-09-12
I grew up watching The Mod Squad when it was originally on the air and have fond memories of the show. I rejoice in its release to DVD and the 5 stars are for the series itself. What I do have a problem with is the price. $35.99 for half a season of 13 episodes? That is criminal! What is it with the release of these old teleivison series (The Addams Family, Time Tunnel, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, to name a few) where they feel the need to brake up each season into Volumes 1 & 2, thereby requiring you to spend twice as much for one full season's worth of a TV show? It's greed, pure & simple.
Very, Very FAR OUT!!.......2007-09-08
Time to rejoice, the original counter-culture Classic TV Police Series phenomenon that remains an iconic favorite, replete with one of the best and most memorable TV musical themes ever composed, will at along last be released on DVD in season boxed sets. Can you dig it?
Season 1 Set 1 will include the first 13 episodes and is expected to include interviews with the cast.
Premiering Sept. 24, 1968, during the height of the Viet Nam War and Civil Rights Movement, Mod Squad lasted for five action packed seasons with episodes that dealt as much with social issues as it did crime in the streets.
Set in Los Angeles, the premiss was simple enough: Three young people in trouble with the law are given the opportunity of avoiding jail sentences by infiltrating the counter-culture as undercover cops and exposing criminal who prey on youth. The idea is for them to bridge the generation gap between the youth and the "fuzz."
The three "delinquents" were Pete Cochran, portrayed by Michael Cole, who was arrested for car theft; Julie Barnes, portrayed by Peggy Lipton, who ran away from her prostitute mother in San Francisco; and Lincoln Hayes, portrayed by Clarence Williams III, who was arrested during the Watts riots. Tough talking Capt. Adam Greer, portrayed by Tige Andrews, was in charge of the special squad and eventually became a father-figure to them. (Lipton, who later played Norma the waitress in another cult classic - Twin Peaks - was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Julie, and won a Golden Globe in 1970 for her portrayal of the character.)
In the series, Cochran drove an old green "woody" side-paneled stationwagon that became a lasting symbol of the show, along with cooooool bell-bottomed pants! Sadly, the wheels were destroyed in the second season when the car was set ablaze by an arsonist.
The stellar series spawned a block-buster movie in the 1990's that was horrible by comparison, failing in all respects to capture the chemistry and remarkably innocent sincerity of the original.
Included in this set are the first 13 of the 26 episodes that comprised the first season: Teeth of the Barracuda: Bad Man on Campus; What a Pretty Bus; When Smitty Comes Marching Home; You Can't Tell the Players Without a Programmer; A Time to Love, A Time to Cry; Find Tara Chapman; The Price of Terror; A Quiet Weekend in the Country; Love; Twinkle, Twinkle Little Starlet; and The Guru.
Episodes expected in the Season 1 Volume 2 DVD set are: The Sunday Drivers; Hello Mother, My Name is Julie; Flight Five Doesn't Answer; Shell Game; Fear is the Bucking Horse; A Hint of Darkness, A Hint of Light; The Uptight Town; A Reign of Guns; A Run for the Money; Child of Sorrow, Child of Light; Keep the Faith, Baby; Captain Greer, Call Surgery; Peace Now - Arly Blau; and A Seat by the Window.
Created by the legendary TV mogul Aaron Spelling, he produced it along with Danny Thomas and Sheldon Leonard. Harve Bennett replaced Spelling in later seasons.

Julie Barnes (Claire Danes), Pete Cochrane (Giovanni Ribisi), and Lincoln Hayes (Omar Epps) have one thing in common: They're young adults on the wrong side of the law, arrested for crimes of robbery, grievous bodily harm, and arson. Taken in by mentor and father figure Captain Adam Greer (Dennis Farina), they are assigned to a special task force working undercover for the police--the logic being that these kids can get into the hip young establishments that the older, more cynical officers can no longer infiltrate. Ill-suited to each other and chastised by their peers, this rogue squad is forced to come together when they uncover a seedy world of police corruption. Not knowing who to turn to, the kids are left with their wits and street cunning (they're not allowed to carry guns) to overcome mounting odds against their survival.
With Hollywood facing increased pressure in 1999 to curb its screen violence, this film arrived with perfect timing. The only problem is the film was aimed at an audience that never saw the early-1970s TV series that inspired it, and this dubious recycling resulted in paltry returns at the box office. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable action movie with some noteworthy performances--especially from Omar Epps, who shines with strength and vulnerability, like a young Laurence Fishburne. The energetic camera work and throbbing soundtrack also stand out, along with some retro styling and a plot that's refreshingly free of excessive violence or gratuitous special effects. --Jeremy Storey
Customer Reviews:
Terrible waste of time.......2007-08-02
I faithfully watched The Mod Squad every day at 4pm in syndication in the 70's. I loved the TV show. The characters were cool, believable, and "solid". This attempt to revive interest failed miserably. The actors were boring, and seemed not to even try. The plot was confusing, and the producers, directors and writers made no attempt to remain faithful to the original storyline. Most of the newer movie versions of old shows at least tried. I found Dukes of Hazzard pretty good. I look forward to seeing "Dallas" in the theaters. (I think they should get Larry Hagman to play "Jock"!). But this "movie" doesn't even deserve one star. It's a shame because I would love to see The Mod Squad back in syndication. I hope the series comes out on DVD. Be cautious - watch the movie before you purchase.
Was this movie a joke?.......2006-11-22
I couldn't decide! If this wasn't one of the worst movies ever made I don't know what is.
The Dream Team.......2006-07-18
(This film might put you to sleep.)
Genre classifications "action" and "thriller" are both terribly misapplied in this case. The film's pacing is slow, the character development doesn't really exist with regard to some important characters, the writing is poor, and as such it is difficult to judge whether the acting is subpar because the actors aren't all that great (though Ribisi has proven his ability in some much better stuff) or because the script wasn't worth producing. Add to all of this a sad lack of special effects and an unmemorable soundtrack, and you've got an entire work of below-average film making.
If you're looking for an arcane suspense/action, "Ronin" might be a good pick, but even still, for blockbuster quality stick to the well-traveled paths of smash hits. There's a reason "everybody" liked some films.

This is not a movie, it's a void.......2006-05-26
The Mod Squad isn't a movie, it's a void. That's the most fascinating thing about it and the thing that kept me watching - I'd never seen a film that offered absolutely nothing before. It's a film without any reason to exist whatsoever, seemingly consciously designed to appeal to no-one as if made purely as a contractual obligation to someone the studio really dislike. There is no plot, there is no characterization, there are no set piece action scenes, there aren't even any scenes as such, just a progression of increasingly empty shots projected at 24 frames per second. I'm not talking about empty as in dumb summer blockbuster but empty as in "We haven't got the pages yet so just point the camera at something and stop when you've got 90 minutes worth." It makes you appreciate the `artistic achievements' of the movie versions of Charlie's Angels and S.W.A.T. that much more. What it does offer is far too much of Giovanni Ribisi at his most tediously execrable doing his bastard son of a thousand morons impersonating Marlon Brando method acting routine, Michael Lerner dancing with Omar Epps and... no, that's it. Oh, Clare Danes has a nice smile in one shot. And Dennis Farina has the sense to get killed off early. Genuinely the most utterly pointless film ever made, it's like L'Humanite without the jokes but, you know, for kids.
