5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-28

Petrucci and Johnson are my favorite to round out the triads in Steve and Joe's shredfests. Petrucci is a class act and an ensemble player who is not a limelight hog or a show-off. All of the solo acts are great, and the jam session is a classic! The camerawork on the DVD is good -- aspiring guitar gods be able to "see" stuff close up they wouldn't get on a CD or at a live show.

4 out of 5 stars Better with Petrucci than with Malmstein.......2007-05-14

I bought this a week after seeing the 2007 live G3 show in Boston. I had been disapointed with the show in Boston because of poor acoustics and sound mixing at the Orpheum. However, this DVD from thier Tokyo show is great and cost wayyyyy less than seeing them live. The sound quality is fantastic; the mix is perfect and the camera work is VERY good. In JP's set the camera at one point lines up perfectly to see JP and Dave Larou wailing over frets with synchronised speed and the effect is pretty exciting for a player who is watching. The Vai set is typical stuff and for me is OK but Satch's set is VERY good, maybe better than his set on the Satch, Vai, Johnson DVD. I had paid no attention to Petrucci till seeign the live show and this DVD has earned him my respect as a truly talented and professional player. His set alone is worth the price of this DVD. I also have the G3 DVD with Satch, Vai and Eric Johnson. That one is IMHO the best of the G3 concerts available on DVD. The Tokyo show is the second best. I saw the one with Malmstein and was very disapointed with Malmstein. One last note... of the 3 DVDs I mention here, the Satch, Vai, Johnson DVD has the best G3 jam at the end. The chemistry of those 3 in the jam's classic blues forum just worked better. Even Vai who is anything but a traditional blues player kicked out some of the coolest blues/rock licks I've ever heard; my favorite having a lot of Jimmy Page flavor to it.

5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2007-05-06

Joe always brings the big show for the G3. These guys have such great sound. You don't have to be a guitar player to appreciate the effort that's put into this show because the music is so good. Not every song will grab you, but the ones that do will get into your bones!

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever!.......2007-01-25

This is the greatest rock guitar album ever! Satriani and Vai produce their usual high quality stuff, but the revelation is Petrucci, as he brings together all those years of experience with Dream Theater et al to produce two 10 minute tracks of sheer virtuosity: an amalgamation of skill, passion, power, and control. The conclusion of the three in concert together is a real joy as they take three old favourites (Hendrix, ZZ Top, and Deep Purple) and dance new rythms around old standards with delightful skill. Buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Incredible DVD.......2007-01-06

Im not big on words so I'll make this short. This was one of the most incredible G3 concerts I have ever seen. Most of the songs are ones I like and John Petruccis guitar playing is phenomenal. I used to think Steve Vai was the best guitar player in the world. Mr. John Petrucci has me thinking twice about that. He only plays 2 songs on the DVD but they are very long and played flawlessly as far as I can see. I have watched this DVD at least 3x now and will probably do so many more times in the future. This one is a no brainer. Buy it.

It's hard to imagine nowadays that someone so innately bitter and cynical as Humphrey Bogart could be a major movie star--but he was, and the movies were richer for it. In Tokyo Joe, Bogart plays an Air Force colonel who returns to Tokyo after World War II to reclaim a nightclub he'd had to abandon. When he discovers that his former lover, a Russian refugee, is still alive and now married, he sets out to win her back--but in the process gets drawn into a fraudulent air freight scheme that may endanger the stability of post-war Japan, as well as a child he never knew he had. Tokyo Joe isn't a classic, but when the camera catches the lightning in Bogart's eyes or his calm voice twists into a snarl, it's a powerful jolt. His dark persona makes his virtuous acts all the more compelling. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Humphy Dumphy.......2007-03-09

Bogart never made a bad flick and this film is not bad either, but its not on top of Bogart's best work ? For those that want to view all of Bogies work, this is reasonable entertainment, but don't expect Key Largo or Casablanca and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars A dispirited star melodrama..........2007-01-15

Bogart is a former nightclub owner who returns to postwar Japan to pick up his life with a wife (Florence Marly) he had deserted, only to find that she had remarried and was the mother of his seven-year-old daughter...

In the ensuing complications, Bogart is placed in a position where he must smuggle some Japanese war criminals back into Japan or his daughter will be killed...

Bogart is much less convincing than in his "Across the Pacific" days, where he was also required to deal with villainous Japanese...

For an actor who had belabored the point that he had been forced to do too many bad films because he had no control over the properties, it is disappointing to see him making extremely bad films now that he did have full control...

4 out of 5 stars Just Bogart being Bogie........2006-10-25

It is middlin'. Neither his best or worst which is to say, damn good. He is Joe, owner of a bar/nightclub, in Tokyo, before the war. During the war he was a bomber pilot, & is back after to reclaim his club. He considers Tokyo his home town, but things have changed. His club is now off limits to Americans. He finds his wife, who he thought was dead, alive & remarried. He had left her in Tokyo a week before Pearl Harbor & couldn't get back, until now. She has a child that is his but is not at all thrilled to see him. She is comfortable with her new, rich American husband. Needing a source of income, Joe becomes the front for a shady Japanese businessman in the air freight business. This is the Bogie we love, rough around the edges, a good guy, but world weary & cynical. As a pilot he is smuggling war criminals back to Japan. He wants out but his partner has evidence that his wife was a war collaborator. Then his child is kidnapped. This movie has a good blend of romance drama & action. He is a hero in the end rescuing his daughter. He is severly wounded, but it's not revealed if he gets his wife back or even if he survives his gunshot wound. A worthy, enjoyable Bogart movie.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Bogart.......2006-06-07

There is a reason the AFI ranked Bogart as the #1 actor in the history of film, The Enforcer was a great movie and one that I own.

4 out of 5 stars Intrigue and romance in post WW2 Japan for Bogie.......2003-01-22

Life in post war Japan is a theme not often explored in Hollywood film making and that alone gives "Tokyo Joe" an extra element of interest. Often referred to as second-string Bogie effort, the film I feel has much to commend it and it weaves an arresting story of intrigue, corruption and lost love against the background of a Japan just coming back to life after the conclusion of the war.

Humphrey Bogart had most of his great roles already behind him by 1949. "Casablanca", "High Sierra", "The Maltese Falcon", "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre" to name a few cemented his name as one of Hollywood's most memorable stars over almost two and half decades of work. This might be a lesser effort than those examples but time had passed and being now a bit older suits Bogie very well in his playing of Joe Barrett, a man returning to Tokyo to reclaim both his pre war saloon/gambling den and to find that his supposedly dead wife is very much alive and holding a couple of dark secrets. Bogie handles both elements of the story, ie the rekindled romance with his wife Trina (Florence Marly), with the exciting second half of the story dealing with high level corruption, kidnapping and people smuggling rings.

Upon arriving in Tokyo Bogie finds things have changed greatly since the period prior to WW2. Not only does he discover his wife is still alive and remarried to an Americam Official Mark Landis (Alexander Knox) but that she has a young child who is actually his. His thriving pre war business is impossible to reestablish and he finds himself involved in some shady transportation activities with a prominent Japanese businessman, Baron Kimura (played by the excellent Sessue Hayakawa) who actually is bringing back to life the mysterious fanatical society of the Black Dragon which is intent on smuggling back into Japan convicted war criminials. What develops is Bogie finding himself playing two sides in helping the Americans flush out the terrorists and having to deal with their kidnapping of his daughter as a guarantee that he will cooperate with them. The second half of the film weaves a fairly exciting tale of adventure and suspense which sees Bogie undertake to rescue his daughter from the kidnappers and fight off the Baron where he is shot. The conclusion of the story leaves up in the air Bogie's fate, whether he survives the gunshot wound during his brave rescue bid and reclaims his wife , or whether he dies a hero and allows Trina to continue her affluent life as the wife of an American Official. This ending is quite different to what one can normally expect and it allows us as the audience to make our own conclusion , in a way similiar to th efamous ending of "Gone With The Wind".

"Tokyo Joe" which for interest sake was the pre war name of Bogie's establishment, benefits greatly from some interesting on-location photography in Tokyo. While it is obvious that the principal cast never left Columbia Studios in Hollywood the meshing of location footage with the actors scenes is very well done. The major Japanese actors used in the film also bring a very welcome look of authenticity to the story. Veteran actor Sessue Hayakawa is really excellent as the villian of the piece and Teru Shimada who appeared in just about every movie or television show requiring Japanese actors over a 30 year period creates a real impression as Ito, Bogie's best friend and pre-war partner in the running of Tokyo Joe's who pays the ultimate price for getting involved with Bogie in Baron Kimura's schemes. It is good to see at this time in Hollywood that talented Japanese actors were able to get prominent roles in major Hollywood productions such as this.

Humphrey Bogart always managed to hold the interest in no matter what movie he was appearing in and while "Tokyo Joe" is certainly not his best remembered film it is a very entertaining film with a good story that serves up equal parts romance, adventure, and suspense. The story is at all times believably played and that's what keeps your interest as the characters are those that are not just Hollywood fiction. Films in general were changing by the beginning of the 1950's and "Tokyo Joe" in a way was one of the first to show the after effects of the war on defeated countries like Japan. Enjoy this exciting tale with the always trenchcoated Bogie in a good performance.

After charging through "One More Time," "Wild West," and "You Can't Get What You Want (Until You Know What You Want)" at a punishing clip, one might expect the soft-spoken Joe Jackson to shift to a lower gear. Instead, the one-time musical prodigy, pub band pioneer, and now eclectic composer revisits one of his even faster, earlier hits, "On Your Radio." If most performers risk monotony with such a move, Jackson's quiet charisma in this 1986 performance encourages pleasurable surrender and, in his more mature material, careful attention to his uniquely marbled tones, rhythms, and colors. Steeped in the influences of swing, Latin music, classical composition, and melodic balladry, Jackson is full of mix-and-match surprises, such as a delicate re-imagining of "Steppin' Out" and a growling, funky "Soul Kiss." This is a pure delight, from start to finish. Special features could be more special, however: a Jackson discography would have made sense with such a far-reaching playlist. --Tom Keogh

What a great concert... if you have not seen this, buy it now... Joe is fantastic, the band is tight, and the sound is great.

5 out of 5 stars A great snapshot of a genius composer.......2003-08-15

This concert was filmed during a tour supporting one of my very favorite Joe Jackson albums - "Big World." It was actually the first JJ cassette (showing my age here!) I ever bought. I got it at a national retail chain for [money amount]! But I've loved it ever since and it fostered what would become a strong affection for the man's music. Being a songwriter myself, the "Big World" album was very much like the things I writing for my own band at the time, I felt I'd discovered a kindred spirit in Joe's music. Unfortunately, "Big World" was not a huge success in the U.S., so for years, I've spent a fortune acquiring import CDs (and wearing them out, having to buy more), never dreaming that I would ever have the opportunity to see any footage from this tour.

Well, it's not just footage. It's an entire show, unedited and complete. Many of the songs from "Big World" were included, as well as all of Joe's hits of the time. Afficianados will enjoy the version of "Steppin' Out," which is similar to the one on Joe's live 2 CD set. At a slower, more melancholy pace, the song takes on a completely new atmosphere. The "Jumpin' Jive" medley, containing three songs culled from the album of the same name, is another treat. The reserved Japanese audience seems to please Joe to no end. They are attentive and appreciative, unlike the American and European audiences who insist upon whistling and caterwauling throughout performances. The combination of the tight band, incredible composition and respectful audience make this one of the most enjoyable concert films I've ever seen.

Another good thing about it is the quality of the production. It - thankfully - lacks the whole moving-camera-cinematic-effects that we've come to expect from concert films since the eighties. I have a wonderful Elton John DVD ("One Night Only") that is just beautiful, but the sweeping camera angles and economy of motion take all the realism away from the performance. With this DVD, you honestly get a sense of being there. The cameras (I think there are four angles altogether) focus with news-camera quality on the details of the sparse stage from the cups on Joe's piano to the pop-marks on Gary Burke's drums. The total effect is one of genuine credibility. It's as if you're sitting there yourself.

Get this now and enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Great show! Wish the camera work and sound were better........2002-01-21

2 channel Dolby sound. That's all. But that doesn't make it a dealbreaker, though. It is rare nowadays to find Joe Jackson live video performances, and this is one of the better ones out there. Great playing from his 3-piece band, though if you've heard his double live album that features some tracks with a much larger band, you know what you're missing!
Read some of these other reviews of this disc. They are right on the mark. Good, fun concert, but not with the superior sound we DVD fanatics have been spoiled with.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the rest?.......2001-12-30

A previous review indicates that this DVD incorporates a "complete" show. If that is the case, I wish Joe Jackson had videotaped a show from earlier in the "Big World" Tour. I caught the tour in Vancouver, where he played an unabridged "Cancer," a long, spacey "Chinatown" and a version of the then unreleased "Acropolis Now" that brought the roof down. I can't complain about the material he did record, but I wish I had a more complete memento of that wonderful tour.

4 out of 5 stars At His Peak.......2001-12-12

The perverse Joe Jackson finally found the perfect audience in the typically inert Japanese. After all, he recorded the Big World album (from which this tour video comes) in front of an audience that wasn't allowed to clap until a few seconds after the songs were over.

While the sound quality isn't the greatest and the camera work is at times amateurish and stiff, Joe Jackson Live In Tokyo represents the artist at his peak. Big World is his best CD and is (for some reason) out of print. Here are great versions of Soul Kiss, Right & Wrong, Jet Set, and Survival found nowhere else.

From the LP to the CD, then the short laserdisc "The Big World Sessions" and now Live In Tokyo, I now have four documents of Joe Jackson circa 1986 and wouldn't have it any other way.

For Joe Jackson fans everywhere.

Tokyo Joe: Joe Barrett returns to Tokyo after World War II where he once owned a bar, Tokyo Joe's, and deserted his wife Trina. They have a seven-year-old daughter. Kimura forces Joe into piloting war criminals by revealing that during the war Trina made treasonous propaganda broadcasts. Sirocco: In 1925 Damascus Harry Smith runs guns to the rebels under Emir Hassan. The French arrest him along with others and force him to sell weapons to them. He develops an interest in French intelligence officer Feroud's mistress Violette. The Harder They Fall: Humphrey Bogart's final screen role was in this 1956 film by Mark Robson (Home of the Brave), about a cynical sportswriter who becomes a press agent and sees firsthand how badly boxers are used and manipulated by crooked managers. The story finds Bogart's character waffling about the ethics surrounding the exploitation of an overrated fighter who will earn money for his handlers in the short term, then be tossed onto the scrap heap. This is a very tough tale written by Budd Schulberg and shot with determined unromanticism; the boxing sequences are among the most striking and violent ever committed to film. Jan Sterling plays Bogart's wife, who watches him vacillate about whether to expose the fight syndicate as a racket.
