All the qualities that have made John Mayer a rising star are on display in this concert package: an interesting voice; tunes that are catchy but still have some depth; an appealingly casual slacker attitude; and enough grit to separate him from the namby-pamby singer-songwriter crowd. Recorded in 2002 in Birmingham, Alabama, the nearly two-hour concert showcases not only Mayer's songs (including some new ones) and versatile three-piece band, but also his surprisingly deft guitar playing (check out his Hendrix-saturated stylings on the unaccompanied "Man on the Side"). There are plenty of extra features as well, including an audio track with Mayer's comments about the songs, photos, and two brief but well-made (especially "Any Given Soundcheck") documentaries. All in all, a worthy addition to the catalog of an artist who keeps getting better. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars An awesome DVD.......2007-08-23

This guy is just such a great performer. I have just recently become a John Mayer fan and I was really impressed by this disk. Lots of songs (all great) and fantastic sound quality.
You really get to see Johns awesome personality come through in this performance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent representation of John in concert.......2007-07-27

I saw John live about two weeks ago, and I can honestly say that I was blown away by his performance - his humor, energy, showmanship, and of course the fabulous singing and guitar work fall astounded me. It was captivating - the man flat out knows how to capture an audience's emotions and adjust to the flow of the show - I found myself right there screaming with all the teenage girls when he plays "Your Body Is A Wonderland." Funny when I look back on it, but it's just how he connects with you in the flow of the show.

And that's what this DVD does - it draws in the viewer to everything that makes a John Mayer concert so great. Every couple songs, he just puts his guitar down and chats with the audience, just laid back and relaxed, showing that he is a real person with a personality - no just some guy that makes music. But when his songs start, he enters another world - whether jumping up and down on "No Such Thing" or getting serious and moody on "Something's Missing" or "Man On the Side."

To address the "sound issues" that many reviewers have faulted this DVD for, I can't relate to their problems - the show sounds great, from John's singing and the band's playing, to the fans cheering in the background. And no, the fans don't detract from the experience - they only get loud in between songs and at the beginning of his more famous songs. I really can't see the sound issue - maybe it's the fault of a bad television or sound system, but it sounded great when I played it on my 8 year old Sony Trinitron television, so you're probably in good shape. You won't complain about the sound.

Many people say they can't make out John's lyrics in this DVD - understand that this DVD was from a September, 2002 performance. This was five years ago - his singing style has changed since then, but I still can't see what they complain about. If you've heard his songs before, which I assume you have if you're about to buy this DVD, then you will understand every lyric he sings.

The show starts off well, but really hits its stride in the middle of the set, when he just zones in and plays. He does a great, slow-tempo acoustic take on The Police's "Message In A Bottle," and Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Lenny" sounds just as bluesy as the original. The real highlight of this show, though, is "Covered In Rain" - a song you won't have heard unless you own the CD version of Any Given Thursday, or you've seen him in concert otherwise. It is an emotion-filled, slow blues masterpiece - YouTube that song if you don't believe me. His emotion and energy in this song really sum up the entire performance.

In conclusion, Any Given Thursday is the only concert DVD I own, and for good reason. John's live performances are a treasure - for someone still so young, his music is so good, and seeing him perform live will totally draw you in as a fan - this is a good thing! I just can't wait until a more recent live show gets released on DVD - it's been 3 albums, John...hook us up. In the meantime, Any Given Thursday will suffice.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Customer!!.......2007-01-16

I received my purchase in good condition and sooner than anticipated. Thanks!

3 out of 5 stars good, but try subtitles next time.......2007-01-08

I'd listened to a couple of CD's by John Mayer but wasn't too thrilled until I heard "Continuum". It grabbed my ears immediately and I thought every song was very good if not great. That's what motivated me to buy the DVD "Any Given Thursday". The songs sounded good but after a while they started to sound very similar...so much so that we decided to watch the rest some other time and opted for "The Dance" with Fleetwood Mac which we've seen countless times. Some concerts are just more watchable time after time. I'm sure you have your favorites. There were a few things that made John's concert less than thrilling for me. Granted... the guy is mega-talented, both as a singer - (I'm assuming songwriter) and guitar player. And from the noises of approval coming from the crowd I suppose you'd have to crown him stud-muffin. There were just enough young ladies in the audience that couldn't stop squealing long enough to take a breath that might make you want to scream "please stop" at your TV. I think I used different words. Anyway, if you can get past that its still a good concert. Where he started to really lose me is when it became clear to me that I couldn't understand what he was singing about unless he stopped to explain it. Great voice, but please, give me a coherent word or two so I can get into the song. He sounded clear as a bell on "Continuum" CD. Just something he could work on. Last point to throw at you is that I felt I wasn't so much seeing a band but a solo performance with backup. Maybe that wouldn't matter to anyone else but I think if you're on the same stage you don't need quite so much separation. I know, picky, picky. If you're a John Mayer fan you're probably looking for that review that will validate your purchasing impulse. I'm not sure if this review would have helped me either. For the rest of you I'd suggest borrowing someone else's DVD before taking the plunge. In the meantime, buy the CD "Continuum". You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Stand back from the mic, John........2006-09-13

I'm barely giving this 3 stars because I REALLY like John Mayer. This DVD grew on me at the same time I realized that he is eating the microphone. I know that other reviewers have mentioned this but it's worth pointing out again. Why dwell on the negative? Well, I bought this DVD because I knew it would sound better than the CD. I was wrong. It's almost worse. The constant slobbering and "cha's, che's, cho's" make it sound like he's under water some of the time.

Mr.Mayer has admitted that one of the things he'd like to change, is the way he presents himself on stage as far as mannerisms and so forth. He should have started before this show was recorded.

Reccomended for die-hard John Mayer fans only.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie and I finally bought it.......2007-03-06

I have been looking for this movie for 6 years and I finally found it here. At first I was a little concerned because it was an import, but the concern was not justified. The movie is DVD quality and is english. I received it 5 days after I bought it and it is just as I remember it. Dont spend >$100 and buy it used, just get this one! Thanks Amazon, you now have a customer for life.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movie, but very rare.......2006-12-01

This film only played in two theaters. (One in NYC, one in LA). It only grossed a few thousand dollars. (I read this in EW)

When it played at the Toronto Film Festival in 1998, Roger Ebert wrote about how racist and absurd this movie was and much he hated it when he saw it, so most distributors stayed away from it. He also claimed that it was a cheap knock off of Tarantino, and done poorly. You can read the Toronto Film Festival review where he trashes the movie on his website.

It finally came out on DVD in 2002, by Polygram/USA films. A week after it came out, Polygram/USA Films went bankrupt, and no more than 1000 copies of the DVD were made. This wasnt the only film that got hurt by Polygram's bankruptcy. The Last Days of Disco, Topsy Turvy, No Looking Back are also Polygram/USA DVD's that are super rare and impossible to find because of this. The only film that got lucky from the Polygram bankruptcy was The Big Lebowski, and thats because the Coen Brothers own american distribution rights to all their films.

The DVD imports are quite a bit easier to get a hold of. If you want to watch this movie this is the best way to go. The movie is still in English and the subs can easily be turned off.

SYNOPSIS

-"Taking a page from the Tarantino school of filmmaking, Thursday starts with a bang -- on Monday -- and shows no mercy until the final scene. The moral of the story is that you can't escape your past. That said, Thursday centres on Casey Wells, an architect leading the good life in suburban Houston, whose past catches up with him when his old buddy Nick comes to town.

Nick (Aaron Eckhart) brings with him a cast of creeps including Paulina Porizkova as the hyper-sexual Dallas, and James Le Gros as homicide specialist Billy Hill (folks call him "HillBilly"). If you caught Eckhart's performance as lead sleazeball in In the Company of Men, he will not seem cast off-type here. In Casey's words, he and Nick took separate paths when he left Los Angeles, and Nick never got his act together. Dialogue and a few flashbacks tell the story of Casey's sordid past: two years in L.A., which he has kept secret from his wife. Aside from the opening scene and the flashbacks, Thursday takes place on Thursday, with title screens to help guide the viewer through the day,

Porizkova seems to be enjoying every moment on screen and why not? Every actor loves to play a villain, and she shines as Dallas. Other fine performances are given by Le Gros, who is believably psychotic, and Jane, who delves into Casey's dark side without abandoning his conscience. Good editing is also evident in Thursday, as much of the gore is left to the viewer's imagination.

The unrated version has five minutes of extra footage too extreme for the R-rated release. Both versions give you plenty of violence, drugs and a smattering of sex. Obviously, Thursday is not family viewing, but if you liked Pulp Fiction and True Romance, this fast-paced ensemble film should also entertain you."

5 out of 5 stars Twisted but riveting plot with lots of humor!.......2007-04-09

I didn't know what to expect when my husband suggested we watch this 'classic' on TV the other night [it was on Showtime]...but at the end of it, I felt that I had taken a fun roller-coaster ride, the kind that makes you feel sick and thrilled at the same time! The actors play their roles really well...Aaron Eckhart, Paulina Porizkova [yes, the ex-supermodel turned author], even Mickey Rourke in a small but significant role. You never know what to expect with this movie...just when you think someone's number is up, something else happens...plot twists abound, there lots of blood and violence, and sex too. Definitely entertaining, too bad its hard to obtain on DVD [even Netflix doesn't carry it].

5 out of 5 stars ordering Thursday on DVD.......2006-11-29

GREAT movie! However, ordering it for a "normal" price seems very hard. I found a New Copy available for $10 but it was a Russian version. They gave me directions on which russian titles to click on in the Menu to get to play the movie in the original English version, so it is worth it, by far, if you can't find it anywhere else. Just look around -- this movie is worth the time!

1 out of 5 stars Amazon has got to be joking!!.......2006-06-08

What is up with that price ?? $111.00 dollars are they crazy?
A friend of mine bought this dvd for under ten dollars at a retail store. If you pay $100 dollars for this movie you are crazy. And the movie is only 82 minutes long.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Little Movie You've Never Heard of...........2006-04-29

Yes, there is an explanation as to why this movie sells on the secondary market for more than an ounce of many precious metals. Skip Woods (writer of Swordfish)penned a nice little story about a day (Thursday to be exact) in the life of a reformed thug, and how in this one day this new life he has created for himself comes crashing down around him. The storyline is unlike any other I have watched, definitely was an ideal concept in 1998 (this should've been a strong box office draw, and probably would have if done with a major studio and bigger names). Without ruining the novelty of the story, this is worth the watch due to its high action, unexpected twists and turns and strong acting (high marks for Mickey Rourke--no one does "slimeball" quite as well).

        5 out of 5 stars awesome...........2006-04-05

This is one of my favorite films of all time - I rented it many years ago and for the last few years I've been trying to purchase it - very hard to find - at least under $100... anyway I recommend this film to everyone...

"Monster Thursday" is the story of Even, a young man who leads a directionless life. Tord, his best friend, is the opposite: a great surfer with a prestigious job and beautiful Karen as his bride. The last part is especially hard on Even, who is not-so-secretly in love with Karen. When Tord asks him to look after Karen while he is out of town, Even decides to clean up his act and master the waves to impress her. At first he's a prime candidate for drowning, but a local surfing legend becomes his mentor, and Even, Tord and Karen end up on a collision course with the monster wave.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best surf dramas ever.......2007-07-24

For a bunch of scandanavian weirdos, they sure did a good job of showing what it's like to catch the surfing bug. Stylistically shot and excellently delivered, this film instantly goes way up in the approval rating of dramatic films made about surfing. There seems to be a love for making this film on several levels from the director to the actors. Somewhat precious on some levels, it's overall narative prevents it from being too cute. The DVD virtually has no real value to it in terms of special features other than a great film. But Monster Thursday drops in on surfing films that are in the pantheon of quality and realistic portrayals of the subculture that is wave riding such as Big Wednesday. Very well done and all surfers will love this one.
