4 out of 5 stars Great collection, BUT..........2007-08-30

...the packaging is quite cheesy/cheap. I don't know what I expected for $55, but it wasn't the chintzy cardboard mausoleum NOR the cardboard slipcovers for each disc (that's correct, these discs are not held in keep cases or even slim cases, they are in cardboard slipcovers, in a slotted plastic insert).
I DO enjoy the Masters of Horror series (some good episodes, some bad, none great), but I'm a horror fanatic and not particularly discriminating. I love the fact that some of the greatest horror film directors are involved with this and, though these short films are not anyone's best work by a long shot, as I said I do enjoy this series nonetheless.
So--those who purchased these DVDs individually actually have one up on those of us who waited for the boxed set: at least your discs are housed appropriately in long-lasting plastic!!

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad set for the money..........2007-08-29

I completeley forgot to pre-order this set, so I popped into Best Buy and was pleased to pick it up for $52.95 including tax. My only complaint so far is that the individual disk slipcovers fit a little too snugly towards one end of the box. Just a small complaint for what looks to be a few hours of prime horror viewing.

3 out of 5 stars Anchor Bay has always been known for double-dips!!!.......2007-08-29

C'mon people... I know that double-dipping sucks for the consumer, but this is nothing new. Anchor Bay has always been known for their double-dips! I can honestly say that ARMY OF DARKNESS holds the record for the most double-dipped title, and most of these were done by Anchor Bay. The company milks their cult favorites for all they're worth, and they're not going to stop as long as money is made.

I'm glad that I held off from buying the individual releases. My only complaint, however, is that the box set is a little too BIG. It takes up a forth of a row on my DVD shelf. The "crypt" could've been designed half the size and still would've worked fine. Sure I could've bought the two volume sets instead, but I really wanted that extra disc. I know... I know... but I'm a bonus feature nut!

4 out of 5 stars Get Real!!!!!!.......2007-08-29

If those of you who ran out and bought each title as it came out would have had the good sense to wait you would have known that it was eventually going to be released as a boxed set. This happens all the time........these are BUSINESSES............they owe it to their shareholders to turn a profit. This is an attractive set and it's been released with or without special packaging (in a part 1 and 2 box). The content is the same except for the extra disc.....while each show was not an award winner....they make quite fun diversions. Go for it....it's worth the money....if I had purchased all the discs before hand I wouldn't waste the money again.......but I waited knowing full well what was going to eventually happen. Learn the lesson.

1 out of 5 stars Not Pleased With This..........2007-08-28

So here's the deal...devoted followers of this Showtime series or horror fans buy each episode of Season One as they become available at about 10 to 12 bucks apiece. How does Anchor Bay/Starz Home Entertainment reward these loyal consumers? By releasing this, NOW! Not only does it come way too late, but it includes extra bonus material and excellent-looking packaging that we fans can only have for over 50 bucks. Starz, do you think I want to pay $55 for a bonus disc and packaging?! Furthermore, Anchor Bay Starz totally ignored emails sent to them on this subject - they even ignored requests to make the packaging (without the dvds) available to fans somehow. Thanks for nothing, guys. These companies need to realize that this is not good business, screwing the most loyal customers you have. No more Masters of Horror for me, I can't get past this terrible, anti-customer-friendly business decision. Way to go, Anchor Bay - I used to be a huge fan of your company, but this whole event has ruined your image for me. Don't buy this set.

Amazon.com essential video

Hong Kong wuxia films, or martial arts fantasies, traditionally squeeze poor acting, slapstick humor, and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer, The Bride with White Hair) and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other.

The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous "digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. --Eugene Wei

Description

An epic set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, combines the exhilarating martial arts choreography by Yuen Wo-Pind (The Matrix) with the sensitivity and classical storytelling of an Ang Lee film. The result is something truly unexpected: romantic, emotionally powerful entertainment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and gravity-defying.............2007-08-12

In all honesty, it is really hard for me to review the DVD version of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON because I believe this film is really one that you must see in the movie theater to experience the full effect of its marvelously directed splendor. Ang Lee [EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, THE WEDDING BANQUET, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY] did a brilliant job with this modern day masterpiece. Inspired by the wuxia genre of Chinese film, we see beautiful action sequences, featuring "flying" actors and actresses [suspended from seemingly invisible wire], fighting scenes high in the canopies of trees, and even a love story. This is truly eye popping entertainment and features a wonderfully dynamic and charismatic cast (including Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Chang Cheng). CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON began a tidal wave of wuxia style film releases in the United States--including THE HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS. For me, this was the best film of its kind and I am so glad that I saw it! I just hope that they re-release this film on the big screen, so, more people can come to appreciate the fine attention to detail and seamless direction that went into making it so extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars I don't remember much.......2007-07-12

I don't remember much but I remember thanking the person who recommended that I see this film and I loved the scene with the woman jumping from house to house. It was awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Best Martial Arts Film Ever.......2007-06-22

Everything has already been said about this film, so I'll put only a short review here.

Why did I use the superlative in the title? Because it seems to be true for me. (The second place belongs to House of Flying Daggers [Region 99].) The story line is not very strong, but much better than you may see in this genre. The romantic threads do not make it too schmaltzy, and the visual design is simply excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed..........2007-05-28

Although I enjoyed Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi (as always), I didn't enjoy this movie hardly at all. I couldn't believe this was the movie that got such rave reviews and was Oscar nominated etc. I don't say that foolishly, stating that I dislike the movie when really I dislike the genre. That's not it. I just much prefer films like "House of the Flying Daggers" and "Hero" to this one.

Val Kilmer stars as Lt. Col. John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when a pair of unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an Ahab-like, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly Frightening.......2007-09-11

Movies don't often scare me. This one did. There was a point in the movie where I actually shuddered. I've been to the Field Museum in Chicago and have seen the lions and read Patterson's account of the nightmare. The Michael Douglas character is added to give the film depth, but it doesn't detract from the story. I disagree with another reviewer who thought Kilmer and Douglas didn't "click" in this movie. The characters are not friends. The feel is that the two men have competing egos but find themselves on the same side of the fence under horrifying circumstances. Highly recommended for the non-squeamish looking for an exciting adventure based on actual events.

5 out of 5 stars Lions DO NOT sleep at night!!!.......2007-06-29

Saw this movie from Netflix and have now decided to buy it. I've just returned from a safari to Namibia where we heard the lions roaring in the night not far from our camp. NOTHING puts the fear of God into you more than that, all that separates you from them is your puny canvas tent. Our safari guide had seen the movie as well and we talked about it that night around the fire. He is himself a lion tracker in that if his family ranch is threatened by a lion, they do track it down. When Kilmer and Douglas are sitting at night listening to the lion still roaring and laugh about it, you just know that something more is going to happen. And boy does it ever!!! The music soundtrack is great, I especially like the interaction between Kilmer and the guy who played Shaka Zulu in the mini series. ALso the innocent Scottish missionary's part is rather poignant. I don't care if it is hokey, or a typical Hollywood production, the story IS real, the lions ARE on display in the Field museum in Chicago and it evokes the feel of the African savannah perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars great.......2007-06-16

Movie was great. I would highly recommend this for any movie waycher.

5 out of 5 stars The Man-eaters (lions) of Tsavo...thrilling movie.......2007-04-28

I was merely 12 years old way back in 1950s when I first read the book: The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by Lt.Colonel J.H. Patterson, DSO. Later in life, I wished this book could be made into a movie, and my dream really came true when I purchased the DVD. This movie is based entirely on the book by English railway bridge builder, John Patterson.
Ironically, the pair of male lions as depicted in the movie was borrowed from a zoo farm in Alberta, Canada. These lions were fully mane. But in the book, John Patterson described those two lions as lean and maneless...! As factually, most lions in Tsavo of Kenya don't have the beautiful mane unlike their cousins in other parts of Africa. This is unusual, maneless male lions because only females don't spot a mane. The movie will keep you on the edge of your chair from the beginning to the end - never a dull moment. I consider this as the best thrilling movie ever made in the wilds of Africa, especially at this time when the public is conscious about nature conservation. Too bad that when the movie was made in early 1900s, surround sound was not a popular feature and therefore not included, otherwise the roars of these two persistent man-eaters in the dead of the African night would be very nighmarish in our den when we watch the movie...! Yes, these two lions did chomp more than a hundred railway workers that at one stage they were compelled to quit until the pair was finally hunted down. John finally skinned the two man-eating lions and sold their skins and bones to the field museum at Springfield, Illioness. This pair of mounted, maneless notorious man-eating lions are still there for everyone to see and contemplate.
This classic movie depicting a strange aspect of yesterday-Africa is historically true and thus highly recommended. So go for it while it is still available. Cheers...!

5 out of 5 stars Kilmers best.......2007-04-14

This movie is a very good movie. One of Val Kilmers best not to mention it is based on a true story. About two man eating lions of course there is some blood so don't let little kids watch this. A very suspensfull film a lot of good action and it is not slow either

4 out of 5 stars Great Nostalgia value.......2007-08-23

I barely remember watching this movie as young kid with my cousins. We weren't big fans of the animated series, in fact I had hardly every watched the He-Man series. So maybe that's why I could enjoy the movie so much. But as a kid I thought the movie was exciting and action packed and I was glad of the opportunity to watch the movie again. Now it seems a bit corny and Dulph's acting painful but it still reminds of the good times I had being a kid in the 80s. And at the price it's a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-08-14

Was a gift for my brother-in-law - went off without a hitch. Product came early and was a pristine condition. Thank you.

2 out of 5 stars Nostalgia...little else........2007-08-04

I had one of those really nostalgic moments of remembering how much I used to watch this movie when I was younger. Unlike most nostalgic impulse buys, this one was rather unfulfilling. It was nice to see it on DVD quality, given, but overall story and script leave less to be desired. But who REALLY is watching this to consider if it was snubbed from the academy awards 20 some odd years ago. For now, it does what it can do best which is remind us of a time when movie technology was only so advanced, but all of us 7 year old boys ate it up. If you are a HE-MAN affecianado this is a definite buy. Courtney Cox fans may want to watch to see her scream in the movie...just the way she does seems to pay homage in some part to Horror and Thriller movies of the last 40 years. If you want to see the small vestiges of GOOD acting, pay attention to Frank Langella's politically minded and diabolical portrayal of Skeletor. While other actors in the film have a difficult time acting themselves out of a hat, the likes of Langella and surprisingly, Dolph Lundgren, are worth the few dollars trip down memory lane. For all to TREK fans you get an early look at Robert Duncan McNeil pre-next gen and, most importantly, pre-voyager. You will notice that not much changed in his ability in the 7 years between this movie and Voyager's beginnings. Overall the movie is, as I have said, good for nostalgic purposes only, anything more, and I doubt viewers will be as forgiving when it comes to obvious flaws in production and shots. Appreciate it for the context in which is came out of, not much more.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great movie, but a good memory.......2007-07-27

For those persons over thirty, the cartoon of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a classic, this movie wasn't like the cartoon, but it makes also a nice memory. One gets to see Courtney Cox before she was famous on Friends, and Robert Duncan McNeill before he was on Star Trek Voyager.

The Director's comments weren't really that good and the movie isn't close captioned (strange!) but all in all, a movie to pass the time and remember childhood.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!!!.......2007-07-24

Look folks, this may not be anything like the cartoon, but it is a sweet movie nonetheless.

In the capable hands of director Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a seafaring adventure like no other, impeccably authentic, dynamically cast, and thrilling enough to give any classic swashbuckler a run for its money. In adapting two of Patrick O'Brian's enormously popular novels about British naval hero Capt. Jack Aubrey, Weir and cowriter John Collee have changed the timeframe from the British/American war of 1812 to the British/French opposition of 1805, where the HMS Surprise, under Aubrey's confident command, is patrolling the South Atlantic in pursuit of the Acheron, a French warship with the strategic advantage of greater size, speed, and artillery. Russell Crowe is outstanding as Aubrey, firm and fiercely loyal, focused on his prey even if it means locking horns with his friend and ship's surgeon, played by Crowe's A Beautiful Mind costar Paul Bettany. Employing a seamless combination of carefully matched ocean footage, detailed models, full-scale ships, and CGI enhancements, Weir pays exacting attention to every nautical detail, while maintaining a very human story of honor, warfare, and survival under wretched conditions. Raging storms and hull-shattering battles provide pulse-pounding action, and a visit to the Galapagos Islands lends a note of otherworldly wonder, adding yet another layer of historical perspective to this splendidly epic adventure. --Jeff Shannon

Description

When a sudden attack by a French warship inflicts casualities and severe damage upon his vessel, Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey (Crowe) of the British Royal Navy is torn between duty and friendship as he embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes chase across two oceans to intercept and capture the enemy at any cost. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture!

4 out of 5 stars I loved it, at least, what I could make out of the dialog.......2007-09-03

Thoroughly enjoyable adventure yarn, but damned if I could make out a lot of the dialogue. Too much mumbling or was it just poor audio quality? I'm actually quite familiar with British dialect and British accent, but far too many spoken lines were unintelligible. Maybe I should find an edition with captions ... :-)

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Movie !.......2007-08-31

This movie has been reviewed over 500 times now, so I won't write much. I'd like to ditto (i.e. concur with) the review by Michael J. Mazza.

The film is about as realistic in setting as one could make it. There are a few inconsistencies in the sailing, but only noticeable to an experienced sailor - they don't take away from the film anyway.

The film catches the right balance between focusing on the crew and its adventures and daily life, versus the Napoleonic Wars. In otherwords, no need to be a student of that period to understand or appreciate the movie.
There is no romance, which has probably hurt the film in terms of broad popularity; perhaps in the same sense of the movie "Tora Tora Tora !" from the 70s. It was one of the best war films ever made (subjective, I know:). Point is, both are 'limited' by lack of romance in their plots. The two share excellent settings and historical research.

I will point out that M&C distinctively shows the antecedents of 'modern' military leadership: the Capt must balance his personal ambitions with care for the crew, he must coach the young midshipmen (Hollom, Blakeney, Callamy, etc), and use a persuasion to get the sailing master and more experienced Officers and crew to follow him in dire situations. This sort of shows the development of "leadership principles" as used today.

Good movie all around. Crowe was GREAT !

5 out of 5 stars You'll love it or be bored to tears.......2007-08-22

During the Napoleonic wars, a British warship patrols the waters off South America searching for an elusive French privateer. When the French ship proves itself bigger, stronger, faster, and more heavily gunned, with a captain every bit as skillful and aggressive, the British captain refuses to relent in the pursuit even to the point of overstepping Admiralty orders.
There have been many films on the British war at sea against Napoleon but none seems to deposit the viewer so forcefully into the period with so little exposition. Customary explanations are often given begrudgingly as when the ship's surgeon asks for an explanation of what is meant by the `weather gauge' and the captain says wearily, "Shall I tell you again, then, Stephen?"
The refusal to explain lends the environment a note both fascinating and threatening. These ships were tightly disciplined and integrated worlds of their own with the captain having almost godlike power over his crew. We are shown the interactions and relationships for example the growing admiration of the sailing master towards the captain though the master never refrains from voicing an opinion, the reverence the men have towards the ship's surgeon, and the loathing held by the crew for an unlucky midshipman unfortunate enough to lack the strength of command. In fact it is a tiny society so complex that repeated viewing are quite rewarding, each one allowing the viewer to spot some detail or character that might have passed him on earlier viewings. By the end of the film, we have enough awareness so that when the captain turns over command of the ship to a small boy, we realize he has made a wise choice.
Director Peter Weir approaches the film with intelligence and wit and makes the brave assumption that his audience approaches the film with intelligence as well. The cast is uniformly excellent with memorable lead performances by Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. It is difficult to single out any one performance. Each actor seems to etch out a unique personality. The children in the cast are especially good. For those who have not yet heard it, the score, a mixture of classical and folk tunes, is perfect.
The DVD has little in the way of extras. For those who find the movie compelling but the world it portrays mystifying, this could be a bit of a drawback. Nevertheless, for those who can stand to forego the extras, the disk is just fine. For other films providing additional exposition on Napoleonic naval warfare, try Damn the Defiant, Captain Horatio Hornblower, or Billy Budd.

4 out of 5 stars Beat to "General Quarters" For This One.......2007-08-07

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Britain and Franch were mortal enemies fighting for dominance of Europe by land and sea. England was threatened with invasion for the first time in three hundred years. The only thing protecting the isle was the Royal Navy. This is the backdrop of Master and Commander who fights for England with his brave crew and stout ship against France on the far side of the world.

Russell Crowe heads a first rate caste that replays a genre that hasn't been seen since Gregory Peck played the title role of "Horatio Hornblower." From a consistent script and story, one gets the impression of what life was like on the high seas during this time and how quickly, silently, and deadly mortal danger could arise. There was no sonar or radar save those in one's sight, hearing and judgment. And the fog could be one's enemy as much as it could be a friend.

Besides the acting, the music lent perfectly to the story, and one can recognize Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 played by Yo Yo Ma. My favorite was Boccherini's La Musica Notturna Della providing the background for captain's order to beat to "General Quarters."

As soon as you can, steer a course and set sail to your nearest store and purchase "Master and Commander..." It's one of those stories that seems to get better with each viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well made.......2007-07-27

There have been a few good movies made in the last few years. I think 2001-2005 was a pretty good stretch, some of the credit due to Peter Weir's "Master and Commander the Far Side of the World".

You remember those old 'tales on the high seas' brought to you on the silver screen way back in the day? Of course you don't, that was much too long ago, but thank goodness for TCM! I'm talking about movies like "Captain Blood". Now there was a good one, a classic sea faring adventure if there ever was one. Long before the days of Captain Jack and "Pirates of the Caribbean" hollywood used to really know how to give us a swashbuckling adventure. Those days have, for a short time, returned.

When you've watched "Master and Commander" you feel like you've really been there in a story told of about 120 years ago, when the French and the English we're at war, in the times of Napolean. While the foot soldier held his ground in Europe, on the far side of the world there we're battleships and Man of war's battling it out for supremacy of the seas. That's what this movie is about, just a small glimpse of the little wooden world of planks, rigging and cannon held together by Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey of His Majesty's Royal Navy.

Peter Weir directs this beautifully crafted work, a historical adventure of what war of the time was really like. Not just a mundane historical account you understand, this adventure explores the lives of the men on board, their stories, friendships, struggles of course, and their encounters with the French Man of war, The Acheron. Captain Jack Aubrey (Russel Crowe) has orders to sink, burn or take the Acheron a prize. In doing this he leads his crew into the unexplored waters around the southern tip of South America to the unknown Islands of the Galapagos. A really beautiful backdrop to this story. The acting is superb with Russel Crowe giving one of his top performances along side Paul Bettany as supporting actor among others. The scenery is teriffic, costumes spectacular and the web of all the little sub-stories is immaculate. Its really a joy to watch and one of my favorite movies of all time. There are just not enough movies like this around, and to be so well made makes it a true find, well not really a find since it garnered 10 nominations for Academy Awards back in 2003. The art direction is particularly good as it did manage to take home an Oscar for Cinematography that year. The music is one of the best film scores I've heard in ages, and I like how they weaved the two main players, Russel Crowe and Paul Bettany's, scenes playing the violin and bass into the actual music score (even though the playing is not actually from the two, I think the sound editors did a fine job matching it).

If I could give this film 6 stars I would. It's just that well made! So much detail could be written about this movie, but that would just be teribbly monotanous, so I'll simply say watch this movie!

A pure old-school martial arts movie, beloved by aficionados, that also appeals to nonfans simply as a rousing action film. The often-imitated fact-based plot (see The Karate Kid) centers upon the rigorous training process undergone in the mid-19th century by the anti-Manchu Chinese patriot San Te (Gordon Liu). It's depicted as a grueling voyage into the unknown. Cast out of his home village when he stands up to the cruel warlord (Lo Lieh) who slaughtered his parents, the refugee seeks out the martial monks of the Shaolin Temple, who steer him through a torturous series of "chambers"--horrendous ordeals designed to build strength and agility--before he's even allowed to study boxing or swordfighting. Finally he defeats a rival by inventing a brand-new weapon, the three-section chain-linked staff. But innovation can be carried only so far; when San Te suggests opening a "36th chamber" in the temple that would teach Shaolin techniques to the populace at large (so that they can fight the nasty Manchus) he is drummed out of the corps. Naturally he returns to his home village, slaughters the baddies, and prepares to open China's first public Shaolin-style kung fu school. Many of the pupils San Te recruits in the final reel became legendary martial artists in their own right, the "Fathers of the Church" of the Chinese kung fu tradition. This is strong action entertainment with real historical resonance. --David Chute

Description

(Action) A young man on a mission of vengeance trains at Shaolin Temple to become a kung fu master, evolving into the legendary monk San Te (Gordon Liu), who introduces Shaolin kung fu to oppressed Chinese.

5 out of 5 stars A definitive staple of Kung Fu cinema gets the DVD it rightfully deserves!.......2007-09-12

Dragon Dynasty has been releasing lots of great martial arts films uncut and polished up lovely with great extra features... and was there any more deserving out there than this!? The fantastic journey of an ordinary student who loses everything and seeks out the Kung Fu training attainable only at the Shaolin Temple. After the setup it's train, train, and train some more through the different chambers of Shaolin, which tests everything from your skill with a staff to your ability to strike heavy bags with your head to how quick your eyes can follow an object (plus LOTS more). Gordon Liu is great as this is the role that he was obviously born to play and one of the factors that make this Lau Kar-Leung movie the classic it is. Though mostly a training film there are some great fights here including an enjoyable (although one-sided) finale versus the one and only Lo Lieh! Another joy is watching Liu master the 3-section-staff especially in his first fight against a fellow monk with double knives (brilliantly performed by Lee Hoi-San). For martial arts fans it's officially time to throw out those janky bootleg quality copies that we were forced to endure for so long and put this version right at the head of your collection... where it deserves to be.

5 out of 5 stars It's the duty of Shaolin to vanquish evil.......2007-08-18

San Te is a student that finds himself rallying behind his teacher in resistance to the Manchu government. When many of his friends and family die as a result of the government's ruthless tactics San Te tries to become a Shaolin monk in order to learn Kung Fu in order to gain revenge on the Manchu officials.

36th Chamber is a brilliant martial arts film. It is artfully directed and edited and endlessly entertaining containing some of the most interesting "training scenes" that I have seen in a martial arts film, or any film for that matter. The fight choreography is almost completely flawless throughout and each fight seems to tell a story or have a purpose in the overall narrative. There isn't fighting for fightings sake. While that may sounds like a drawback it certainly isn't. Also, while seemingly a revenge flick 36th Chamber is more about the power of learning and teaching. The vast majority of the film contains some element of teaching or implementing teachings in one form or another.

The brilliance of the directing and editing is that one San Te starts learning to become a Shaolin monk he has to pass 35 Chambers to do so. Now obviously showing all 35 Chambers on film in their entirety would probably make for an exorbitantly long film here the first 6 or so chambers are focused on showing San Ta's tackling of the "easiest" of the chambers to increase his strength and dexterity. The later chambers are handled more quickly and the process of each is shown through other character enduring the tests while San Te is shown to be mastering them. Seen in its entirety this entire section of film is quite brilliantly directed and edited. In addition, later when San Te exhibits the different things he has learned in his fights it is down without a "remember that?" type flash back like other films have done. The film assumes we are smart enough to remember or merely uses similar camera cuts and angles from the training sequences to aid in recall.

I really can't recommend this film enough.

5 out of 5 stars Fight'n the Man.......2007-07-26

Hands down one of the best old school kung fu movies ever made. The acting is good (except for the main villian, but he is rarley seen) for a kung fu movie and if you ever wanted to know how to start a popular uprising, this is the standard template. If you are a martial artist, this movie is great for getting the juices going, if your not one, you might start taking lessions!

5 out of 5 stars kong fu fans will love this.......2007-07-20

this is a classic movie, thoroughly enjoyable for kongfu fans. lovingly transferred to dvd, good production qualities. the training scenes are memorable, there is enough humor in it to sustain a good time, and the fight scenes are creative, fast, and well choreographed.

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-07-17

This movie is what made watching saturday afternoon kung fu flicks as a child enjoyable. The movie has held up pretty good and the dvd transfer is very clean. The only knock on the dvd is the subtitles which are often mispelled, but not enough to detract from reading and watching the film at the same time. I only saw the movie once as a child, but it obviously made an impression. A great martial art film to add to any movie collection.

The first, and only, X-rated film to win a best picture Academy Award, John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy seems a lot less daring today (and has been reclassified as an R), but remains a fascinating time capsule of late-1960s sexual decadence in mainstream American cinema. In a career-making performance, Jon Voight plays Joe Buck, a naive Texas dishwasher who goes to the big city (New York) to make his fortune as a sexual hustler. Although enthusiastic about selling himself to rich ladies for stud services, he quickly finds it hard to make a living and eventually crashes in a seedy dump with a crippled petty thief named Ratzo Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman, doing one of his more effective "stupid acting tricks," with a limp and a high-pitch rasp of a voice). Schlesinger's quick-cut, semi-psychedelic style has dated severely, as has his ruthlessly cynical approach to almost everybody but the lead characters. But at its heart the movie is a sad tale of friendship between a couple of losers lost in the big city, and with an ending no studio would approve today. It's a bit like an urban Of Mice and Men, but where both guys are Lenny. --Jim Emerson

Description

Daring. Provocative. Shocking. Compelling. Nearly thirty years after its original release, "Midnight Cowboy is still heartbreakingand timeless" (The New York Observer). This Academy AwardÂ(r) winner* for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay also boasts OscarÂ(r)-nominated** performances by Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, neither of whom have "ever been better on screen than they are here" (Chicago Tribune)! When Joe Buck (Voight), a good-looking,naively charming Texas "cowboy" makes his way to the Big Apple to seek his fortune, the only wealthhe finds is in the friendship of Ratso Rizzo (Hoffman), a scrounging, sleazy, small-time con man with big dreams. Living on the tattered fringe of society, these two outcasts develop an unlikely bond one that transcends their broken dreams and get-rich-quick schemes and makes Midnight Cowboy "that rarest of things: [a film] every bit as moving now as it was when it was [first] released" (Premiere). *1969 **1969: Actor

5 out of 5 stars This film does not entertain, nor is it meant to.......2007-09-05

I won't bother with a description of the plot. What I find most interesting is the vast divergence between those who love and those who hate this film. And I think it comes down the general presumption by most viewers that commercial film is a medium for entertainment only. This film does not entertain. It will instead leave you feeling hopeless over the dehumanization of urban life. It will also bond you to characters who are ultimately lost in life and either the walking dead or the soon to be buried.

Every secondary character exists to show that both Rizzo and Buck are not simply just naive and pathetic losers for being bad street hustlers, but are in fact upstaged in their depravity and callousness by the supposed 'marks' they attempt to con or prostitute for. This is not so much a parable of the anti-hero's redemption in spite of his own failings, as much as it is a statement about an urban socialite landscape that uses and disposes of our anti-heros for puerile and sadomasochistic pleasure, like slaves whipped for the pleasure of patrons in a Roman bath.

Rizzo's and Buck's relationship is the only honest expression of human bonding throughout the film. And they are at the lowest rung of the social ladder. That - I think - is critical for why so many dislike this film. Because it turns on its head the classist notion of education and social refinement as the driving force of all humanistic gains. Instead, we see the least desirable and least refined as the most human characters in a grimy landscape of ugly buildings, littered streets, and wealthy socialites without any sense of community.

Juxtaposed between this anti-social statement on modern urban life is total hopelessness for Buck as his last and only real friend dies in the final scene. We are left with a double-negative that does not turn positive: the great society which attempts the humane is shown to be even more disagreeable and manipulative as are our anti-heros, while at the same time the one human connection made throughout the film is negated by a thoroughly preventable death. And so Buck is once again alone, left to tackle a life of poverty and hardship without the redemption of a close human connection.

In a sense, what we learn is that there is no humane in humanity among either the socialites or the uneducated and naive fools. There is only disconnected and lonely nihilism for us all. And that statement - at that time - is what made this art, not 'mere entertainment'.

5 out of 5 stars "For A Stud That's A Real Handicap.".......2007-08-31

"Midnight Cowboy" offered to me one of my earliest fond memories in my film education. I saw it in a truncated version on UHF in 1980. Despite the cuts for content it still had the power to move me. To be honest it moved me to tears which is not something one easily admits to. It's a film about an unlikely friendship between Joe Buck (Jon Voight), a naive cowboy who has unrealistic dreams of gaining his fortune as a male prostitute in New York and Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), a gimpy tubercular ersatz grifter. The alliance is utterly believable because at first it's born from convenience and the inherent isolation both characters feel and evolves into the love the two feel towards each other. Voight is utterly charming as the aw-shucks Westerner. This part introduced Voight to film audiences in a big way. Hoffman's part is a real eye opener because it was his followup to "The Graduate" and there couldn't be two more diverse roles and Hoffman escapes into these characters completely. New York plays a big role in the picture but I don't think the Chamber of Commerce would approve. The film demonstrates how the ritzy side of the Big Apple co-exists uneasily with the seedier side. This contributes to the isolation the characters feel. This is a first rate picture that was eminently deserving of the Best Picture Oscar it won despite the "X" rating the MPAA slapped on it at the time of it's release.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not a cowboy, I'm one helluva stud!.......2007-08-06

A masterpiece of a movie that I am just now appreciating, really for the first time. I remember my parents seeing this movie way back in 1969, and not really understanding any of it. It is a unique movie in so many ways, and it is easy to see why my parents were so confused.
Midnight Cowboy was also had it's own Mort Drucker movie spoof in an issue of Mad Magazine, so I familarized myself with the general story many years ago as a kid.
Later, I watched it on the late movie and it made very little sense because it was heavily edited.
Without re-describing the narrative thrust of it, this movie is an initiation into big city hustling, street prostitution, drug use, and just surviving on the streets of New York. Made years before the word "homeless" was an active part the American vocabulary, this movie is somewhat prolific in tone, and although it is set in the late sixties, it could be any following decade. If any kid thanks that hustling and panhandling in the streets of New York could be "romantic" or just wants to be in New York and living on the streets just to be there and away from home, needs to see this movie.
What makes this movie a masterpiece is the top quality acting, the use of flashbacks to maximum effect, and just the subtle way of showing us how any regular "Joe Buck" can be turned into a monster by their past, their present cicumstances, and their lack of hope. And yet, there is something wonderful in finding friendship even in the worst places.
Winner of the Academy Award for best picture of 1969, it certainly is a worthy mainstream film that also be considered as one of the best "art" films of all time as well.
I have not watched disc 2 yet, but still give this one 5 stars! The postcards included are the best movie PR postcards, ever!
Harry Nilsson, Rest in Peace!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2007-07-31

A work of cinematic art must do two things: show something new in a new way, and use all the elements of the medium to their fullest possible advantage.

The film is certainly not humorless. The humor is not pie in the face; instead it is wry, somber, intelligent.

Editing, composition, sound, light, acting, screenplay, and dialog are utilized to put forth the plot and express the theme. Fine art does not become dated. Screenplay by Waldo Salt portrays the growing friendship between two, emotionally and economically struggling human beings--both of which happen to be men-- living a harsh existence in the slums, set in late- 1960s New York City.

The plot and character development progress via the use of expertly and sensitively filmed and edited, deftly placed, carefully scripted and brilliantly acted flashbacks as well as crisp, provocative dialog, complemented by stirring and character-revealing music.

Schlesinger is one of the few directors who makes flashbacks work for discerning audiences who grasp the subleties of complex multilayered screenplays that refuse to brush inconvenient and stark realities away from public view.

Joe Buck and Ratzo Rizzo's life journeys connect them not only to each other but to the emotional fabric that had been missing from each of their lives. The message of Midnight Cowboy, though admittedly bleak on the surface, is also filled with a hope that even through trials and anguish and strife, one's humanity can shine through, making almost everything worth struggling for to achieve some form of human connection.

Midnight Cowboy is an incredibly beautiful and complex work of cinematic art. Highly recommended for people over the age of sixteen who have begun their own intensive thinking processes about society, what it means to be human in a near-intolerable, dog-eat-dog society and who do not allow the commerical, tepid media fare that is constantly served up to them get the better of their ability to question the status-quo in film or in life.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Little Toaster.......2007-08-04

This is one of the most cherished movies of my childhood, well thought out it was a great movie that shows that we are a throwaway society if looked into the moral of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Filled Adventure.......2007-08-03

This was the first movie my daughter ever watched when she was two years old. She watched it over and over. I really liked it to. It was filled with fun adventures that toaster and his friends went on. Totally entertaining & highly recommended. Great songs for the kids to sing along with too!

1 out of 5 stars DVD with VHS Tracking Type of Problems.......2007-07-19

Viewing the Brave Little Toaster DVD was like watching a very used VHS tape. There were tracking lines shaking through the entire movie. The quality does not look like anything Disney produced. It viewed like a pirated copy of a bad VHS tape. The Brave Little Toaster

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite.......2007-07-06

This was always my favorite movie as a child and watching it as a young adult I am still enthralled by these adventerous appliances. All good movies have a central theme and an intersesting captivating plot. Who wouldn't like a movie about five appliances that embark on a journey to find their master, who couldn't imagine abandoning them. Great lyrics and music make for an amazing movie experiance.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Little Toaster--a timeless classic.......2007-06-01

I discovered this movie 20 years ago when my own children--3 boys were little. It was my middle son's most favorite movie; he watched it all the time. I now have a niece and nephew (both age 3)--and I was wracking my brain for ideas on what to get them when I remembered this video. I sent it to them both for their birthdays and got rave reviews back from their mothers--so I would call this a timeless classic with a wonderful message for children (and adults too!). I'm so glad I found this on AMAZON.com.

Face/Off is a great movie and will be great on HDDVD. Thank you Paramount for supporting the best high definition format!

5 out of 5 stars Great action film with awesome plot twist!.......2007-08-11

This is one of my favorite action films. For its time, the concept of "face off" and how both Travolta and Cage can act so good and so evil makes this one of the best action films. Definitely will get it as soon as the HD DVD comes out!

5 out of 5 stars Great action film.......2007-07-27

This is one of the best action flicks released in the last ten years. Great fun.
Don't be fooled by the reviewer giving this film one star. That prude dude must
think that watching Die Hard is a sin and should be punished as a crime.
I wish they do a great HD DVD transfer and I'll be happy.

1 out of 5 stars Walked out...........2007-07-26

Yeah, Unlike the other reviewer I don't care about Travolta. This film was horrible - 100,000 bullets fired, children shot in the temple and it has the record for the most continuity errors of a film... ever. It remains the only movie I walked out of the theatre before it ended only to be tortured again at a friends watching it on video. Don't support this junk when there is real cinema available. Get your machismo-porn-violence somewhere else. This is just stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Sky Captain rules!.......2007-02-18

If you missed this movie - now is the time to try it in HD! Shame that the movie failed at the box office, but it's good to own it now in Blu Ray. Nice transfer, though the movie itself is very soft visioned, so you won't get this very special sharpness feeling (like i.e. with Mi:3)

3 out of 5 stars poor acting but effects are good.......2007-02-16

THe story is not bad but the acting is quite poor. On the other hand the high definition picture makes up for them and this movie can be enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie..........2006-12-10

I may be in the minority but I really enjoyed this movie. From the retro 'CG heavy' visuals to the 1930's movie seriel feel, this movie is a breath of fresh air. The characters are transparent as cartoon characters but it all fits together nicely to create a unique movie experience.

3 out of 5 stars Would Have Been Great As A Saturday Morning Serial.......2006-11-21

SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW comes off as too campy and too two-dimensional. Polly Perkins (Gyneth Paltrow) and Joseph "Sky Captain" Sullivan just don't ever come to life as characters. We never get to see why they do what they do, or why they're romantically drawn to each other -- except for the handsome rogue and the independent woman that they are.

The plot is almost a standard culled from any of the 1930s science fiction magazines, and even takes a few riffs from Max Fleischer's Superman cartoon with the giant robots wreaking havoc in the streets. After the Great War (World War I), several scientists were pulled into a think tank called Unit 11. No one knows what they were working on, but now all of these men are starting to disappear again. Giant flying robots seek out the scientists as well as machinery and raw products, but no one knows what for.

Sky Captain gets called in. His mercenary band quickly assembles and gets ready to probe into the mystery, but they're attacked first and Sky's right hand man and innovative thinker, Dex, is capture. But not before leaving a clue that tells Sky Captain where the source of the mysterious robots is broadcasting his commands.

The movie quickly becomes a chase as Sky Captain and Polly track down one clue after the other to figure out what's going on. This is familiar fare for anyone who's seen the Indiana Jones movies or the Buck Rogers serials released on DVD.

The CG work for the movie is absolutely amazing, though the opening 30 minutes or so are really too dark in my opinion. They seem drenched in warm sepia tones that I found distracting. The actions sequences came along regularly enough, but most of them were far too predictable. The most inexcusable part, though, is the lack of interesting heroes. They were paper thin and tended to meander through scenes without substance.

Still, as a Blu-ray release, it's an interesting one worth picking up. The high-def presentation is fantastic, and the audio is well sorted out to get the most from your surround sound system. There aren't any other enticements to pick up the movie if you already own it on DVD other than the presentation.

3 out of 5 stars Only two shots left.......2006-09-28

This is a 2004 view of what a 1930's view of the future could look like. Most of the CGI and blue-screen overlays had to be a tad fuzzy to make the scenes work. The language may be a tad stilted but it also is designed to be a thirties movie rendition.

Seems that somewhere towards the end of the last war a brilliant scientist with a vision disappeared and the whole Group 11 project was disbanded. Today top scientists are going missing and it is up to Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) reporter-photographer to find the reason. Mean while it looks as though a destructive minus is ravaging the city (looking for something) and the only person capable of foiling the evil plot is, you guessed it, Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law, of "GATTACA" fame).

Eventually Joe runs out of gas and only Franky (Angelina Jolie) can save him if there is time. Meanwhile Polly finds that her camera has only two shots left; can she make the best of them?

How can this daring duo and their pals foil the nefarious plot that may prove fatal to the world as we know it?
