St. Louis 1903. The well-off Smith family has four beautiful daughters, including Esther and little Tootie. 17-year old Esther has fallen in love with the boy next door who has just moved in, John. He however, barely notices her at first. The family is shocked when Mr. Smith reveals that he has been transfered to a nice position in New York, which means that the family has to leave St. Louis and the St. Louis Fair.

This Slice Of Americana Would Have Worked Better If Not A Musical.......2007-08-23

Basically this film shows us roughly one year in the life of a Saint Louis family in the opening decade of the twentieth-century, with everything culminating in the commencement of the 1904 World's Fair in their hometown. It's all in all a cute movie, especially the charming Halloween segment, but I can't begin to say how much Judy Garland's singing grated on my nerves. Yes, I know, this cultural icon has a deep, loyal fan base and I'll get slammed for this, but I seriously think her singing was the worst part of this movie. When she was acting she was all right, but every time she'd open her mouth to sing, I'd hit fast forward. I wish they'd put out a special edition DVD that was minus the songs. Yes, I'm being serious, and, no, I don't hate musicals in general. Speaking of DVD extras, unless you're a true fan of the cast or this movie itself, mostly you can skip watching them.

Yes, Virginia. There was a time..........2007-07-15

...when Hollywood used saturated color and made movies with upbeat themes and charismatic actors. But even by the standards of those bygone days, MEET ME IN ST LOUIS was a remarkable achievement.

Did you know it was based on a series of stories by a woman named Sally Benson? She was called "Tootie" when she was growing up. Those stories were based on her life in St. Louis around the turn of that century.

You know, I'm glad the producers and studio kept the gentle plot of family life rather than add more oomph to the story. But they did add songs - and - ooomph - what songs! They even brought back the old old "Skip to My Lou" in swing time.

Now, I know you know Judy Garland. But, try to notice the other actors because they were some of the best studio actors of the time. Have I ever told you that 7-year-old Margaret O'Brien, who plays Tootie, is on my personal list of favorite actresses of all time? All time! This is probably her best role. Mary Astor who plays the mother was a leading actress for years. Leon Ames was a father-type for years. And Harry Davenport, he was the grandfather I wished I had. And Marjorie Main... well...!

So, let's add this up: A simple drama set a hundred years ago - tuneful songs - a terrific cast - packaged with rich visuals, sets and costumes by Vincente Minelli and his team.

Speaking of packages, this boxset includes an informative "making of" featurette and a soundie -- that's an old music video -- of the movie's songwriters performing "Skip to My Lou" in the same style that would be used in the movie.

What's that? Alright, Virginia. From now on, I'll call you "Tootie".

Two excellent movies for the cost of one!.......2007-07-29

[ASIN:B000K2UGZM Stand and Deliver/Lean on Me] I volunteer in a juvenile detention facility, usually helping teenagers with their school work. They are not allowed newspapers or television, but they do watch videos. I purchased these because they are based on true stories and I hoped they might be inspiring for the kids.

Not only do they inspire the kids, but they seem to inspire the teachers as well!

I believe these DVDs would be excellent for any parent and preteen-to-teenage child.

It is well worth the cost to purchase these.

This the kind of movie that my daughter and I enjoy. It is inspirational as it shows how one person or group of people can accomplish what everyone is saying is inpossible. Both of these movies have taken hard core bad kids and took them to new horizons because they believed in them and wouldn't let them quit. If you like to see the good guys win these are excellent movies to watch.

You simply can't go wrong with this DVD containing two outstanding films on educators who inspire their students in two utterly different ways.

In "Stand and Deliver" Edward James Olmos, almost unrecognizable, rightly earned an Oscar Nomination for his portrayal of an idealistic teacher in a run-down school. He makes extraordinary efforts to connect and motivate his students. He is a shining example of that cliche term "No one cares how much you know until the know how much you care." Olmos's character cares more than any teacher I have ever met myself. Awesomely inspiring!

Morgan Freeman's role in "Lean on Me" is typical of the kind of roles he's particularly good at: "My way or the highway." He nearly sinks his own efforts to turn around a failing school by acting as if he ALONE is the only one that can. This is a lesson for every administrator out there: Trust Your Staff/Facutly. Give your staff and facutly the respect they are entitled to and they will work for you and the students much better than if you brow beat them and circumvent their authority as professional educators. It is only when Freeman's character learns this that things begin to go his well-intentioned way.

As a 16 year veteran teacher I love nothing more than inspirational stories about education. Both of these films are now available in one package and definitely worth the purchase! If you are moved by other stories in the same vein, then check out "Mr. Holland's Opus", "To Sir with Love", "The Blackboard Jungle", "Dead Poet's Society", "Take the Lead", and "Akeelah and the Bee."

I purchased Mr. Bean for my husband for Christmas. My 10 year old granddaughter saw the tape and fell in love with Mr.Bean. This summer when discussing Christmas, she said she was going to ask Santa to bring her a Mr. Bean just like Grandpas. Doesn't matter what age you are, Mr. Bean is enjoyed by all.

We LOVE them all. The simple joys that Bean brings to his live action character translate very well into this nicely done, and artfully drawn, cartoon series. Perfectly enjoyable.

Leslie Ann Warren! Gorgeous and so so so talented! She lights up the screen with her brilliant beautiful smile, and backs everything up with deep talent.
Genevieve Bujold, another beauty, in a different way, equally talented...the changes she goes through as she learns about her own sexuality.
Keith Carredine- Not just an interesting and photogenic face with a dancers body... he too has the acting skill to convey the complexity of his character and how despite how he screws so many things up, his character;s heart wants love...
THe other actors and actresses... Rae Dawn Chong... excellent.
It is a very "80's" style movie, stylistic and somewhat strange... characters intermingling and intersecting... a very unique story about people;s desires to connect.
I dont want to sit and rehash the plot line, suffice to say it is a terrific artistic movie and well worth watching more than once.
The music by the incredible Teddy Pendergrass so perfectly outlines the story too. His songs play a huge part of the movie's structure...

This is one great film. It's a lot of fun and it's also very sexy, surprising,and really a kick to watch. Women will live vicariously through Lesley Ann Warren's character ! You will either identify with her a lot, or you'll wish you could.
Lesley was perfect for this film ,and her "lovers" were all very charismatic. The plot is very busy and never dull. The whole cast was great. It's one of those films that seemed destined to "fit" and come to life. Original and a real blast.

Does someone dislike Alan Rudolph in the DVD industry?.......2006-03-27

This is one of the best films ever made, solidly in my top 100. Look at the director, the cast, the strength of this great film, and then look at the ton of garbage being released every week on DVD, and ask yourself why "Trouble in Mind" and "Welcome to LA" are missing. And for that matter, note that there are only 11 reviews posted here for this film. An puzzling injustice.

A no mainstream entertainment with interesting and fine dialogues gives as result a fascinating portrait of those eighties. Atmospheric drama around the banality, frivolity and naïve domain of the life 's theory in this captivating story around a classic triangle affair.

All the cast was splendid: From the disturbed Genevieve Bujold, the easy going life of Leslie Ann Warren and the mysterious and elusive male character played by Keith Carradine.

I must acknowledge that Alan Rudolph made me think he would climb the highest peaks after The Moderns, but evidently, something happened on the road.

'Choose Me' is an odd little movie, set in a stylized (and stylish), totally libidinous after hours kind of twilight, even though some scenes take place in the day. The onscreen music is after hours jazz, and the soundtrack underneath uses songs of Teddy Pendergrass in sometimes shockingly effective, nearly subliminal ways. The complex plot, which I leave to others to describe, deals with the curious interface between love and lust in a witty, ironic way. Keith Carradine is compelling as the mysterious stranger who is all things to all the women in the film. Bujold does a nearly dual role as radio talk show host Nancy Love and her daytime alter ego, Ann. It's a lot of fun, as well as something to give you pause as you pursue your desires.

Hi, I watched the movie recently on T.V. and thought that it was okay, but what I am interested in finding is the music that accompanied the movie! I have searched high and low and can't find anything. Please someone, if you know how I can get ahold of that song(now all I am is...) For those old enough to have experienced Easyrider (1969), Me and Will holds no new vibes. However, that does not qualify this movie negatively. Admittedly interwoven with Easyrider, Me and Will provides good entertainment for a far bigger audience than motorbike-adepts. Its logic and appealing story refers to freedom and escape from daily routines. Its shots are fine, in particular those from the American countryside. For the fans of Traci Lords: she has a tiny role as a waitress, and does well.

As motorcycle movies go, this one is okay. There were a couple items I thought distracted from the plot and weakened the climax of a movie that had potential. The in-your-face drug use was excessive and the fact that every character was either a junky or a wife beater was just too cliched. And the climax of finding the Easy Rider bike is so lame, it voided the complete plot of the movie. And why can't a motorcycle movie be shot at a location where the rocky mountains isn't a constant backdrop? How about making a move about the Dragon's Tail in North Carolina or Route 66 or anywhere but California? If you can find the CD used and you're a motorcycle die-hard like me, it's worth it.

Great Movie!!!!.......2002-06-20

I watched this movie when I couldn't go to sleep this Sunday night on Lifetime. Was almost falling asleep but the movie just got me bolted upright. It was just so ...poignant, or maybe it just spoke so well to my particular situation. I stayed up till 5am to watch it. And was just like "wow" afterwards. Hadn't noticed the title and asked everybody if they had a movie guide....finally called Lifetime Network and a kind person today called me back and told me the title. I'm buying that video.....and it'll be the first video purchase I've ever made!!!
Good for you, girls, for making that movie!!!

This DVD explains the absolute basics of real estate investing. All of which can be easy found on the internet with a quick google search. The only good thing about this DVD is that it was made by real investors. That being said, this is also the con of this movie. It is very poorly made....very low production value....very low information value aswell.

As an investor I found this DVD very informative and priced less than most investment videos. I liked the direct advice from seasoned professionals and the detailed strategy for investors. Not all there.......2006-05-08

I saw this film on Animal Planet several times and loved it so I was excited to find it on DVD. However I was very disappointed that the company distributing the DVD chose to leave several very important scenes with Gordon Tootoosis. As he is portrayed as a Native American medicine man and I can only guess that the distributor is Christian based, they chose to leave out the scenes with Gordon journeying to find the young girl and then later changing into a bear himself. They were wonderful scenes and since I'm also a big fan of Tootoosis I was stunned that they would cut out the scenes. I probably would not have bought the DVD had I known this. A big disappointment to an otherwise very good film.

This film is beyond glorious. The script is flawless and the camera work is a clear influence of Stone. This journey took me on an emotional ride at a hotel room at 2 am. The greenery made it all the better. Bear trainers should be very proud of such progress that Masha and her friend share while go cart stunting. I encourage any child across the globe to approach a grizzly in the same fashion that young Emily has in this film. I actually tried it and it worked out as well and I am still with her.

Someone goofed! Although the packaging says 13 songs, this DVD has 28 songs. And so the run time is over 135 minutes long not 80 minutes as listed. Excellent concert by Cliff. He looks great for his age. And he can still sing and dance around the stage like he is 20 years old. Very lively performance. Great orchestra band and back up singers backing him. If you're a Cliff Richard fan, this is the one to see and keep as a collection.
