While My Big Fat Greek Wedding broke box-office records in 2002, Real Women Have Curves did a better job of keeping it real. Set in the vibrant environs of East Los Angeles, with a breakthrough performance by Latina newcomer America Ferrera, this comedic drama takes a familiar subject--a bright teenager struggling to define her identity--and turns it into an authentic celebration of feminine empowerment. Eighteen-year-old Ana (Ferrera) has scholarship potential, her first boyfriend, and a chubby figure that her similarly overweight mother (Lupe Ontiveros, perfectly cast) won't stop harping about. Mom insists that Ana work in her sister's dressmaking sweatshop, continuing a family tradition that can only break her spirit. How Ana defies this fate--and how director Patricia Cardoso captures the proud tenacity of several full-figured seamstresses--is what makes this film (adapted from a play by Josefina Lopez) so uniquely refreshing. Greek Wedding made more money, but Real Women--which is just as funny--makes a lot more sense. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A $6 million box office theatrical run followed awards and acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. Should Ana leave home, go to college and experience life? Or stay home, get married, and keep working in her sister's struggling garment factory? It may seem like an easy decision, but for 18 year-old Ana, every choice she makes this summer will change her life. Right now, she may be making clothes for less shapely women. But Ana is about to discover that real women take chances, have flaws, embrace life, and above all have curves!

It is America Ferrer at her finest. Anyone with old fashioned hispanic parents can relate to her. Highly Recommended!!!!
Fun Movie!.......2007-05-07
I loved this movie....it is exceptionally well acted, witty, with a smart and biting script. Though it's technically a "chick flick", I think men would enjoy it also (although maybe not admit that). I saw it on television and liked it so much I wanted to see the unedited version. You can never go wrong with a movie made by HBO, and is something that you will want to pull out of the drawer and watch again and again.
Portrayal Seems Genuine !.......2007-04-11
Great movie for all ages. This film is very enjoyable and it can be appreciated by any age group. Laughed through most of this mainly upbeat film.
Characters are portrayed very authentically and believable.
Nothing too far fetched (except maybe the underwear dancing factory workers), though that was a hysterical scene.
Loved it !

The Mother-Daughter Thing.......2007-03-27
I liked this movie a lot. It's not a powerhouse, it's what I think of as a "whisperer." I watched it months ago, and there are some particular moments that keep playing in my mind, still, because I could really feel them. I'm far from being a Latina, but I love Latino/Mexican/Central American culture, so I watched this movie expecting it to be aimed at an audience much younger than me. I love "Ugly Betty" and thought seeing America Ferrera in one of her movies would be interesting. There were several mother-daughter scenes in this movie which really brought forth long-buried memories of exchanges with my own mother, moments where you realize how uncomfortable you're making your mother and you can't help it. As an adult I realize what those moments were, and they don't seem so large and terrible now, but at the time they were. This movie brought them back into focus and made me realize the importance of growing up, of becoming your own person, and the necessity for every daughter to have the courage to "step over" their mother and become herself. It's interesting to watch Ana come through the process and finally realize how HARD her family works to make her able to take that step over. On another note, I am appalled and disappointed at how many fans of Ms. Ferrera have posted on various sites that they love her, love that she's not the usual lookalike skinny stick-insect, and then finish their post with something like, "she'd be prettier if she'd lose weight." It's mean and false. This movie also made me go back and watch "The Joy Luck Club" again, another excellent mother-daughter reflection.
Great Gift to Women of All Sizes & Aspirations.......2007-03-09
It is so wonderful to have a film about women learning to just be who you are, regardless of class background and/or size. A great story of accepting yourself and others, and demanding that you be accepted for who and what you are.

Brilliant painter Francisco de Goya, considered by many to be the most important artist of the modern era, reflects on his turbulent career and tempestuous relationships during the decline of Spain and a bloody war of independence, while living out his final days in exile.

"The Night Is Made For Sleep... And Painting... And Love" ~ Scenes From A Life.......2007-07-22
Note: Spanish with English subtitles.
Synopsis: An old man awakens in bed confused and bewildered. After wandering through a house he doesn't recognize he ends up out on the street impeding traffic and pedestrians until his daughter Rosarito (Dapne Fernadez) comes to his rescue and takes him home. The old man is the legendary painter Goya now in the twilight of his life. Through the eyes of age and experience his life unfolds in a series of flashbacks revealing his passion for painting, his one true love Cayetana (Maribel Verdu) and his homeland Spain.
Critique: Released in '99 `Goya in Bordeaux' is an artsy film heavy on visual presentation but somewhat lacking in character development. It has the feel of a stage production except for the few sequences filmed outside. Most of the film is shot indoors within the confines of the home or studio of Goya. The settings are extremely minimalist, containing just enough furniture as necessary. The cinematography gives the impression of a stage providing just enough light to allow the audience to follow the action but dark and shadowy around the edges to give the impression of more space than there really is. The atmosphere created by the director is indeed unique but just didn't appeal to me.
Making matters worse, I also found the cast to be stiff and uninteresting, except for the lovely Dapre Fernadez in the role of his daughter and care giver. I simply couldn't get caught up in the storyline and ended up watching mostly for the well conceived sequences when Goya's paintings came to life to haunt and fascinate.
My rating: One viewing was plenty for me. My rating: -3 Stars-.
Goya In Bordeaux.......2006-01-29
Truly excellent movie. The photography makes one believe one is looking at a moving Goya painting. Really first rate.
The human side of a genius.......2006-01-22
The society tends to think of artists as selfish, solitary and detached from reality. "Goya in Bordeaux" shows the surprisingly human and sympathetic side of the great artist. The film is not just about Goya's genius. It's about his earthly loves. After a lifetime of moderate promiscuity, Goya settles down into unexpectedly conventional domesticity with his wife and daughter. His concern for his family is genuine and tender. Goya agrees to discontinue his disturbing paintings, because they scare his daughter.
Invaluable treasure Spanish Film!.......2005-04-25
The legitimate pride of Huelva -Carlos Saura- reached a cosmic height with this unbeatable artwork in a theatrical stage around the last days of Goya in Bordeaux. The picture elapses in two well definite times and spaces: the young Goya and his love affair with La Duquesa de Alba, his beloved and unforgettable love Cayetana.
The cast is incredible. Francisco Rabal that monumental actor got perhaps his most admirable feature through his memorable career. Jose Coronado as the young Goya is impressive, and the sensual Maribel Verdú ignites the screen every time she appears.
An introspective portrait in which the memories are the invisible fellow partners, despite he is surrounded and supported by her family until his last breath.
All the Prizes for this film were deservedly won. Consider this film as one of the best ten Spanish films ever filmed.
A superb masterpiece.
It isn't only about Goya, but Goya-via-Saura.......2005-03-08
Not only is "Goya in Bordeaux" a movie *about* Goya, his life, and his times, but it is also another movie *by* Carlos Saura. To fully appreciate this movie, it helps not only to have a little knowledge of Spanish history (19th c.), art, and music, but also to have seen other Carlos Saura movies (Bodas de sangre/Blood Wedding, El amor brujo, Carmen, Flamenco, and Tango--all of which I recommend). It is a Saura specialty to mix music, choreography, stage settings, real life and lives, and inner turmoil into a frankly confusing recursive pastiche of story-within-story, life-imitating-art-imitating-life, and so on, to the point where the viewer can become thoroughly confused. The proper attitude for the viewer is "Well, I may not understand where we're going but any trip with Saura is well worth the effort." On top of that, he is (my opinion) the greatest of all dance cinematographers. While "Goya in Bordeaux" somewhat de-emphasizes dance as dramatic narrative when compared to Saura's other movies, the fandango scene itself is worth the price of admission.

Make No Mistake, This Movie Is Not Biblical or Even About Jesus.......2006-12-25
Make no mistake; this movie is not biblical or even about Jesus.
In this make believe world there is dark and light magic. The magi explain how light magic fights against dark magic and how they have been chosen to find the magical gifts for God. The wise men go on an enchanted journey to find the secret City of Salt where the treasures have been hidden. All the while Herod and his evil sorcerer (who turns into different creatures) try to stop the great wise men heroes. Once the wise men find the City of Salt and answer a couple riddles using their virtues of Courage, Humility, and Love they are given gold, frankincense, and myrrh. After defeating Herod and the sorcerer, who turns into a dragon, they briefly mention that they take the gifts to Jesus, but never show the manger scene or anything of the nature.
This story is being told to a young boy by a shopkeeper / bartender and finishes the story by telling him that if you believe in the 3 wise men, they will bring your presents on the day of the 3 Wise Men.
If you would like a free copy of this movie, email me. I will give you mine unless I have already destroyed it. This story is blasphemous on so many levels, not just because they changed the story, but because they substituted anti-Christian values into positive roles. No self-respecting Christian story includes using magic to fight evil or changes the meaning of the birth of Jesus. I just cannot figure out how a Christian singer such as Jaci Velasquez would be a voice of one of the characters.
This movie is a cross between Aladdin, Harry Potter, and Jason and the Argonauts.

A great movie you never heard of........2007-02-07
I am a big movie buff but I had never heard or seen anything about this movie. I saw it in a video rental store and thought I'd try it. It was great. It's an action/adventure film and it moves really fast -- never a dull moment -- and has enough plot twists that its not predictable. The main character is a young woman who, as a suprise, decides to join her fiance on a business trip. When he's not where he's supposed to be, she goes to track him down and ends up involved in a revolution in a South American country. The cinamatography was fantastic, especially the cave scenes. Also has alot of humor. After renting it I had to own a copy, I was amazed that this movie never made it to the theaters. I loaned it to a bunch of friends and they all liked it too.
only one word for this movie: STUPID! deserves NO STAR!!!!.......2005-12-20
WHAT A PATHETIC MOVIE! bad script, bad acting, bad directing, bad editing, bad background music....everything is bad, bad and, BAD!
one of the worst movies ever seen. unlikable actors and actress, brain-dead script, stupid scenario, an ultimate insult to viewers over age of 13. i just don't want to waste more time in giving this review. what a junk!
Coronado.......2005-08-03
This was a fun adventure. No big stars, not a big budget, and the locations were ordinary... but the film is extraordinary. The acting was very good; the actors look like they were having the time of their lives making this film. The film looks like it cost $85 million to make, but it was done with digital enhancements that you cannot detect; which made the locations look exciting and the action non-stop.
It's a, take a break from life and have fun film.
CORNY BUT FUN.......2005-07-22
CORONADO is reminiscent of those cliffhanger serials that filled the theaters in the fifties: big, brash, corny as all get out, but in spite of its many flaws, CORONADO manages to be okay escapist fare. The acting is pretty lame, and the storyline is not the least bit plausible, but the CGI generated effects are okay for this kind of movie, and the rousing action scenes are likewise above average. Poor John Rhys Davies (see CHUPACABRA TERROR) is again misused, but he's only in it for a few laughable scenes. You could do worse, but oh so much better too.
Just Plain Good Old Family Entertainment.......2005-07-10
If you are looking for good family entertainment, keeping your expections low, I think you will have a good movie to spend time with your kids.

The fate of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca under the brutal Franco regime is the subject of this political thriller. Esai Morales plays an expatriate writer named Ricardo who returns to his hometown Granada in 1954 to find out what happened to Lorca (Andy Garcia), his boyhood hero. With Franco's forces still in power, Ricardo meets a lot of official resistance, takes a few beatings, and defies the wishes of his own host (Jeroen Krabbé), an army colonel who was thickly involved in the torture and assassinations of the 1936 revolution. The closer the intrepid journalist gets to the truth of Lorca's disappearance, however, the more gray that truth becomes, and the more obscure the line between heroism and villainy. This film by Marcos Zurinaga suffers from a bit of miscalculation--Morales's character is simply not interesting enough to hold the center of the story and be our window into the great Lorca--but it is nonetheless startling and tragic in its revelation of complicated truths. As Lorca, Garcia is the picture of nobility, and supporting roles by Krabbé, Edward James Olmos, and Miguel Ferrer add a great deal of dramatic texture. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful movie.......2006-10-03
This was one of the best movies I have seen. The flashback technique was somewhat like Mulholland Drive, but the viewer was allowed to achieve total understanding at the end. (Although it might take a couple of viewings to really understand.) Every actor and scene contributed to the mystery which gradually illuminated complicated political, social, artistic, and psychological truths in the search for the answer to a seemingly simple question. The acting was fantastic as were the music and the settings, and the dialogue. Each complimented the other. There was some gestalt in the ending and Andy Garcia's portrayal of Lorca was courageous, sad, intelligent, and sensitive. It definitly inspires a second or third viewing, purchase of the soundtrack and Llorca's poetry. Also politcally pertinent even today.
Informative.......2005-09-10
I loved the movie "The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca" mainly because of its respect for its subject matter, which is the great Spanish poet, Garcia Lorca. I had just read some of his poetry while taking a World Literature course, and I absolutely fell in love with this poet. Therefore, I wanted to know more aobut his life and the circumstances revolving around his suspicious death. The movie answered a lot of my questions in an entertaining, yet informative manner.
Very Moving, if not completely historically correct.......2004-04-11
This movie was very good. Given that, yes, some of the lines were cheesy and there were some questionable characters(the cab driver and Gabino). Nevertheless, this movie did bring to life the lives that Lorca touched and the beauty of his work. Andy Garcia gave a wonderful performance and his acting was so touching. The only thing that irritated me was that there was a sex scene. I know the old saying,"Sex sells" but come on! This was not a pornographic movie. This was about a poet and his death. I didn't particularly want to see Esai Morales "get it on" with a childhood friend. That was unnecessary. Otherwise, I was moved and inspired by this movie. I bawled my bloody eyes out at the end. Good movie. Please watch it.
Useless Song.......2003-08-27
This is one of those movies where everybody shouts, weeps, cries and overacts in all sorts of ways in order to mask a lousy script. If you look beyond the politically correct platitudes, there's lots of worn clichés to be acknowledged:
* There's the Fairy Godmother disguised as a friendly local serviceman -a consierge, a doorman (Bob Newhart in "Legally Blonde 2") or, in this case, a cab driver- who happens to know everything and everybody, and who's always there to assist the young hero in times of trouble.
* There's the mysterious villain who's not what appears to be, and there's the helpful character who will show his evil colors in due time.
* There's the gorgeous unknown actress who'll perform the pre-requisite nude scene to pay for her shot at stardom.
* There's the habitual scene where the girl discovers her beloved dad is actually an unspeakable monster.
* There's the mandatory bullfight -present in all political movies set in Spain or Mexico- with the ensuing parallel scenes between the bull being killed and the victim being murdered.
* And there's the awful final scene, complete with its ridiculous plot-twist, where everything comes out in the open. Quite predictable, really.
If you're interested in who Lorca was and how was he murdered, allow me to save you some time (perhaps even money):
At the time of his death, Federico García Lorca was an international superstar; Spain's most renowned avant-garde poet. Contrary to what is shown in the film, he was not a political writer. In fact, he had lots of friends and fans in both sides of the conflict precisely because he wasn't, including one José Antonio Primo de Rivera, head of the Falange -the Spanish fascists. Politicians everywhere paid Lorca lip service and hoped to have him on their side. The Left even considered him a national living treasure.
The Spanish Civil War was the long bloody aftermath of a failed coup d'état attempted by the Right in 1936. Although it did not overthrow the legitimate government overnight, it caught everyone off guard: people were astounded as to the magnitude of the conspiracy and no one was above suspicion.
On the eve of the uprising, Lorca made a surprise visit to his hometown Granada, deep in the south of Spain -a zone that would turn for Franco from the very begining. That journey raised a lot of eyebrows among the intellectual circles of Madrid: What was Lorca doing there? And why? And why just now? Was he against the Republic? Had he joined the traitors?
Rafael Alberti, a communist writer and personal friend of Lorca, hotly denied such gossip, going as far as to say on the air that Lorca not only had always been a commited revolutionary, but that he was actually doing some work there for the loyalists. That broadcast sealed Lorca's fate, for he was arrested that very night (at the house of a fascist friend) and promptly assasinated in secrecy (a common practice to both sides of that war).
No side rejoiced over that murder. Certainly not Franco's, for it was a heavy PR setback to his cause. Later on he would even exploit the Lorca cult to suit his needs, leaking that the falangists (no longer in high favour) were to blame for the crime. They in turn blamed the Catholics, and the Church blamed "the war". To this day no one knows for sure who did it or why.
There were no witnesses to come forward, no anonymous account of what happened. The movie's (preposterous) execution scene is somewhat based upon the poem Antonio Machado composed on Lorca's wake:
"Se le vio, caminando entre fusiles,
por una calle larga,
salir al campo frío,
aún con estrellas, de la madrugada.
Mataron a Federico
cuando la luz asomaba.
El pelotón de verdugos
no osó mirarle la cara..."
These few lines do Lorca more justice than two wasted hours of fake eulogy. Read the guy, skip this bomb.
Lorca fan.......2003-06-25
This film is a complete failure. The film never seems to commit itself to taking an actual stand on Lorca's death. The charectors are a banal typecast and hypothesis of what Spain suffered under the Franco regime. The actors are miscast as Spaniards. First Lorca was just over feet tall and pretty ugly by his own accounts. Andy Garcia is tall and handsome, kind of misleading no? They could have at least used some camera tricks to disguise this. The film's holds little historical accuracy and is unengaging. If one wants a better perspective on Spain durring the civil war, I woulds say "Silencio Roto," or even the Orwell inspired "Land and Freedom."

I'm glad someone finally started releasing on dvd the few Roy Rogers films that were made in TruColor, in their original uncut form. Hats off to Lions Gate Home Entertainment! But please don't stop with this one. There are at least 10 more, out of the original twenty or so films that were originally made in TruColor, that there are color prints for. Some how the color prints for the rest were lost. This is really sad. However, I recently found out about one that has recently been released entitled SUNSET IN THE WEST, and although it says it is in B&W, it really is in color. I bought a vhs copy and was thrilled. I guess it was also released on dvd, but no dvd copys seem to be
available at present. Keep up the good work Lions Gate!
Grandkids favorite.......2004-08-31
Color and Quality of this DVD is Excellent. Bells of Coronado
is my Grandkids favorite "Roy" movie. They want to watch this one over and over. It's more popular than Shrek at my house.
Great Roy Rogers DVD.......2004-05-14
This is an absolutely gorgeous Trucolor uncut version of Bells of Coronado. It is far superior to the 1990's VHS version released by Republic Home Video. Although I would not rate this movie as one of Roy's best, it is still a good one. The quality of this DVD makes it a must for collectors of Roy's films. Lionsgate/Fox is to be commended for the great job they did. Hopefully they will do more of Roy's Trucolor films on DVD (Republic Home Video had marketed 9 Trucolor titles on VHS).
A good Roy Rogers, but not the best.......2003-09-21
This is a good Roy Rogers video, but not the best b/c Dale had an immodest dress, and Pat had his shirt off a few times, but otherwise, this is another good movie for the Roy Rogers fan and collector. Just remove the bad parts and you're off.
The main thing I like about Roy Rogers was he was a Christian who was not ashamed to witness for the Lord.
Product Description
Please join us, Greg and Jill Delezynski, aboard our Nor'Sea 27 sailboat for this leg of our journey from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to Bahia Escondido, and the near-by islands in the Sea of Cortez.
See and experience what we saw, through our cameras' lens, as we sailed and motored through some of the clearest waters imaginable. We found ourselves among some of the most spectacular sea life and geological formations, sunsets and sunrises, we have ever seen! Travel along with us on this adventure.
This video is not a Hollywood production! It is a multimedia view of real life cruising by us, real people, living a lifelong dream to retire to tropical, clear waters and experience the real wonders the world has to offer.
By "multimedia" we mean it contains video, still photos, original sound, and at times a narration and/or soundtrack, and music that we have added to make it more interesting. We have taken every opportunity, and every resource available to us to make it as interesting and fact filled as we can.
As we heard some time ago:
The boat is our "bedroom", the world has become our living room!
Customer Reviews:
Fun dvd about cruising!.......2007-01-05
When we retire we want to sail to places we have never been. This is a great dvd about the sea of Cortez. It is not an instructional dvd but a great dvd on the cruising lifestyle. Sailing is not cruising. This couple showed a lot of what the cruising lifestyle is like.
Very enjoyable, and I just bought their other DVD.
Description
Nominated for three Goya Awards, Eduard Cortés' debut feature, based on a true story, is a chilling exploration into a world of deception. Emilio Barrero seems to have it all-a great job at a bank, a beautiful house, a loving wife and adoring son who looks up to him. However, sometimes things are not what they seem. Beneath this so-called "perfect" existence, Emilio is living one big lie. When Rosana, a sexy young student enters his life, the subtle balance that keeps his secret hidden begins to fall apart, taking him and his loved ones to an unexpected ending. Directed by Eduard Cortes. Cast: Jose Coronado, Adriana Ozores, Marta Etura, Roberto Álvarez, Adrián Portugal. Color, 103 Minutes, Spanish with English Subtitles, Drama, Not Rated
