The exceptionally fine cast--Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, J.T. Walsh, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Brad Renfro--goes a long way toward making The Client one of the more solidly enjoyable screen adaptations of a John Grisham southern gothic legal thriller. Susan Sarandon is the attorney who decides to look after the boy; nobody can match her when it comes to playing strong and protective maternal figures (Thelma and Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking). Sarandon won her fourth Oscar nomination as best actress for this role, before finally winning the following year for Dead Man Walking. Author Grisham was so impressed with former window dresser/fashion designer/screenwriter-turned-director Joel Schumacher's work on this movie that he later asked him to direct A Time to Kill. --Jim Emerson

This is another great film that has gotten the shaft! The DVD treatment is subpar and that is why I deduct 1 star. At $4.00 it is a worthy purchase for the movie, but if you are looking for extras and a new transfer forget it.

This DVD arrived in excellent shape and in a timely manner. I can honestly say that it has to rate as one of the best movies I've ever seen. I don't think I got up once during the whole movie - it was like holding you on pins and needles.

The Client was a disappointment.

I thought the book was very good and some of the characters in the book were outstanding. The movie was not coherent and certainly not at the level of the book.

Plot: A mafia lawyer commits suicide. But before he does, he forces 11-year old Mark Sway (Who lives with his brother and mother in a trailer park) into the car. And so he tells Mark secrets about where Loisianna Senator Boyd Boyette was buried. Since Mark's little brother has a stress syndrome (he can't see anything scary), Randy Sway had to go to the hospital. Ever since his father was divorced, he tends to believe that lawyers are morons (at times, they can get in the way) and gets his info about courts and judges on T.V. Mark meets Reggie Love, a woman lawyer who used to have a drinking problem; at first, he doesn't trust her. After many pelts by F.B.I, mafia, and annoying reporters (already sick of Elvis sightings), Mark has to trust her.

Positives: Mark is told by Reggie that he can't lie, or he'll be just like them (mafia). As such, the mafia in this movie are seen as a bunch of criminals. Even though Mark was threatened by a very nasty mafia "dude", he tries to tell the truth, he didn't tell about where Boyd was buried. Many scriptures from the bible are written in cells and there is a picture of Jesus in the hospital. Though Mark can be a pest at times, Reggie tries to help him because she cares about him.

Negatives: For those people who don't like cursing, there is a moderate amount of cussing in the film. 1/3 of them comes from Mark Sway's mouth, which disturbed me a bit. Mark also gives a mafia guy the middle finger secretly. Mark disobeys his mother by going in the woods and therefore, getting mixed up with all this. Mark got his info about an affair like this on T.V, and he claims that he saw a guy having his legs blown off because of the witness protection program (on T.V, though this isn't shown). Due to medication, Mark's mother fights the F.B.I at one point, though you have to watch to find out.

Funnies: In the hospital, "Elvis" complains about his guitar. The way Reggie deals with Mark at times can be humorous.

Conclusion: If you can take the negatives, then I highly recommend this movie. Though, I'd like to say that you shouldn't buy "The Client" To anybody younger than thirteen because even though violence is rarely seen.

Powerful film about Filipino massage boy.......2007-09-07

After a couple of years on the gay international film festival circuit, where it won several audience awards, THE MASSEUR (2005) finally made it to DVD, which was my first opportunity to see it.

The Phillipine-produced film tells the story of Illiac, a 20 year old young man from a small city, who is working in Manilla at a gay massage studio, where tips are based on the sexual favors given to the customers. Illiac seems to be good at his work, and relatively happy being in demand, although he is indeed heterosexual and has a girlfriend back home. One wonders about the "back story" that led him to that line of work, and this is soon revealed when he receives an urgent text message to return home. It seems that his father is close to death. Illiac doesn't make it home in time to say goodbye, but they hadn't really been on speaking terms since his father had deserted his family years ago, leaving Illiac as its sole breadwinner.

Although shot on a tiny budget, the film showcases the skill of the writer/director, Brillante Mendoza, who gives it remarkable pacing, including some initially confusing flashbacks and fast forwards, as well as some unforgetable touches, such as segueing between Illiac assisting the undertaker in preparing his father's body and a flashback showing him giving a sensual massage to a man about his father's age. Later, Illiac has an emotional revelation when helping go through his father's possessions, and considers his future plans. As Illiac, Phillipine actor Coco Martin shows significant range and sincerity, well deserving the acting award he received for it. As a tribute to an earlier Filipino gay classic, "Macho Dancer" (1988), Mendoza cast one of the actors from that film as Illiac's obsessed customer Alfredo. Mostly in Tagalog with English subtitles, the DVD includes scenes from the film's premiere at the Toronto film festival. I give the film four stars out of five.

"The Masseur" (Picture This Entertainment" finally makes it to DVD after having been on the festival circuit for two years. Illiac is a twenty year old masseur in Manila and considered to be the best there is. He works in a gay massage parlor where a massage is considered good when the massage ends in sex. Good sex is what defines a good massage. Illiac loves his job and is very happy at the massage parlor. Everything is going well for him until his father from whom he has been estranged and is a total philanderer, becomes very seriously ill. Familial duty causes Illiac to return to his home village but he does not make it on time to give his final farewell to his father His father died before he got there and when he arrives, his family is preparing for the funeral. Illiac begins to realize that he must reconcile his life as a worker in the sex industry with his role as a son and a brother.
The film is shot as cinema verite and is a beauty to watch. Coco Martin as Illiac shows great intensity and amazing talent for a first time actor.
Even with the graininess and jerkiness of the film it is an amazing look at gay life in the Philippines. It is a drama that is serious and portrays what the poor of Manila do to get ahead, Illiac, even though he as a girlfriend is in constant contact with the male clients that he services as a masseur cum prostitute. The death of his father shows why he became involved in the sex trade; he needed to help support his family. Illiac is in a quandary when his father dies as he has ties to work, his family, his girlfriend and his one main client who continuously returns to him for more.
This is a very strong look at survival and shows the real life of a young masseur. The challenges that Iliac faces are very real and very hard. Made n a small budget, the movie realistically shows the way one young man struggles to survive poverty by using his sexual charms. It has the look of a documentary and it completely engages the viewer. One scene that shows where Illiac moves from his life as a prostitute to a dutiful son, to preparing his father for burial and back to the massage parlor is particularly moving.
There is a lot going on in the movie and the film is cunning in structure. Temporal unity is destroyed here and several other scenes aside from the one already mentioned are unforgettable. With great depth, this is a daring movie which titillates the viewer with a dark tenderness and a great deal of melodramatic sadness.

This is the second film titled Anything Goes to star Bing Crosby (the first was a 1936 film). Both films change a lot of the original Cole Porter stage musical, but at least the later version keeps a few more Porter songs. Still, there is something odd about a Cole Porter film filled with "additional songs" by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen (perhaps Porter's work was not warm and cuddly enough for 1956 America, although it seemed to work well at MGM with High Society, released the same year). Crosby plays a Broadway star teamed up with young TV hotshot Donald O'Connor. Vacationing separately in Europe and needing a leading lady for their upcoming show, each signs a prospect--Crosby snaps up Mitzi Gaynor (at her perkiest) and O'Connor finds Jeanmaire, a French dancer. The show can only have one female star, so when the quartet crosses paths on the ocean liner back to the U.S., sparks will fly. Or not--this Paramount musical lacks any definable zip, from the sleepy dialogue to the listless camera. The capable Nick Castle staged the musical sequences, although Jeanmaire's numbers were choreographed by Roland Petit (also her husband). The Porter songs are half-heartedly rendered, although O'Connor and Gaynor get some oomph into "It's De-Lovely." Der Bingle was born to burble "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," but it's too little, too late. --Robert Horton

Love the dance scenes with Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O'Connor. Don't think Bing Crosby suited the part & some of the acting was very forced. Remember this film from years ago simply for the dance sequences.

Dumb Film, Redeemed by One.......2007-06-04

There's only one reason to watch (or purchase) this dumb film: Mitzi Gaynor. Especially in her "Anything Goes" number. She's irresistably sexy, funny, feline: a supremely electrifying beauty, singing/dancing talent, and screen presence. And Miss Gaynor is one of very few film actresses who, wrapped to voluptuous form in a satiny strapless evening gown, can walk across a nightclub floor onscreen and absolutely take my/(your?) breath away.

Miss Gaynor's romantic pairing with Donald O'Connor in this film is less than convincing (or welcome). On the other hand, her simpatico sibling pairing with O'Connor in "There's No Business Like Show Business" (also available on DVD) works tremendously well.

Should Have Stuck to the Stage Play.......2007-04-13

Anything Goes is a fabulous musical from the stage of the 1930s containing show girls, gangsters, and romance. However, this film version has very little of the above and therefore has only mild entertainment value.

Bing Crosby and Donald O'Connor play stage stars, both enjoyable in their own right. They need a female lead for the show, so they split up in search of one. Crosby digs up Mitzi Gaynor and O'Connor finds Zizi Jeanmaire, neither of them expecting the other to find a girl. Herein lies the problem. Both girls believe they will be starring in the show. Steps are taken to let one of the girls down easily, but both men fall in love with the other man's choice of a star.

With songs from the original musical peppered throughout, the songs lose their meaning in a different context. The choreography is uninspiring and that singing is not all that great despite the major names featured. This one is a real bomb.

Anything Goes--up to a point, that is..........2007-03-30

Anything Goes boasts a great cast. Bing Crosby and Donald O'Connor play two entertainers called Bill Benson and Ted Adams respectively; and Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmarie play dancing actresses named Patsy Blair and Gaby Duval respectively.

The plot revolves around the world of entertainment. Bill and Ted are going to perform in a Broadway show together; and with their terribly fat egos both men simply assume that they have the exclusive prerogative to choose the leading lady for the show. On the bright side, both Bill and Ted choose very talented young ladies to play the leading female role. Bill chooses American dancer Patsy Blair; and Ted chooses the French starlet Gaby Duval. However, trouble heats up fast when neither man can get up the gumption to tell one of the two ladies that she is not needed for the show after all. When all four of them are on a ship headed from Europe to New York where the show will open things only become more complicated. How will Bill and Ted handle this sticky situation? Will they have a tug of war over which one has to do the dirty work of firing one of the ladies? Will each lady stay when they discover that only one of them is needed? No spoilers here, folks--you'll have to watch the movie to find out!

They all do a superlative job with the script that they're given which, by Hollywood musical standards, is still rather thin. The singing and dancing is what carries this movie, especially when Patsy (Mitzi Gaynor) and her male backup dancers perform "Anything Goes." I loved the panache with which Gaby Duval (Zizi Jeanmarie) and her backup dancers perform both "I Get A Kick Out Of You" as well as the extravagant and elegant "dream sequence" when Gaby imagines herself dancing with people in Times Square. Other musical numbers are more ordinary or even forgettable, especially the one in which Donald O'Connor as Ted Adams dances with some children on the ship to New York. Then again, the finale of the cast performing "Blow Gabriel Blow" has style and good taste; and "Blow Gabriel Blow" is a strong number to end this film.

The Technicolor still shines and the crystal clear sound will please you, too. The choreography of the dance scenes stuns you with its fastidious attention to detail and the cinematography frames the characters well in each frame. Excellent job on both counts!

The DVD offers nothing in the way of extras. You can view the whole movie straight through or just select scenes you wish to watch again; but that's the extent of it, I'm afraid. Sigh.

Nevertheless, Bing Crosby fans will delight in this version of Anything Goes. He sings and dances very, very well--and he makes it all look so easy. Of course, Donald O'Connor sparkles like the true champ that he always was in all his dancing scenes. Donald's energy, combined with the energy of Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmarie, pops out at you and all three performers dance and sing to hold your attention well.

I must caution that the plot runs thin in this movie. However, many musicals of this era had this characteristic so perhaps you won't be surprised. I recommend this movie for fans of the great Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. In the final analysis, I give Anything Goes four stars instead of five because of the thin plot and a few numbers that just don't quite do the trick.

Some Entertaining Elements.......2007-01-15

It's easy to understand why they took their time getting around to releasing a DVD of this one. As can be seen from other comments, the 1956 film version of "Anything Goes" will generally disappoint those who love the stage version. Other than some of Cole Porter's songs and a setting on a cruise ship there is no similarity between the two productions. The very entertaining (and still frequently performed) Cole Porter musical has been transformed into a pretty lame film, and three songs by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn have been inexplicably added to the production. Even worse is the loss of most of P.G. Wodehouse's clever script, which was rewritten by a Hollywood hack into this dumbed-down version.

This doesn't make "Anything Goes" unwatchable. The choreography is mostly first rate. Most of the musical numbers are entertaining and several are excellent. The performances are typical of each cast members material (both good and bad) and the film has some interesting film history aspects.

You know almost immediately that this will not be a rousing bit of entertainment, instead of a high-energy opening number the film begins with a back stage party scene that is about as lively as an abandoned railroad track.

Bing Crosby and Donald O'Connor play Broadway co-stars who go to Europe to recruit a leading lady for their upcoming show. Each brings their discovery aboard a cruise ship for a transatlantic voyage. Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire play the girls. Since there is only one role the remainder of the film is about determining which one will be featured and keeping it secret that both were already promised the role. There are two romances, with the two actors falling for each other's girl during the ocean crossing. Suspense and comedy are in short supply.

Gaynor manages a pretty good performance; she gets one very hot feature number (the title song-although Porter's original four letter word lyrics are toned down) and duets with O'Connor in the film's best number "It's De-lovely". O'Connor is also featured in a very original dance routine with children and a lot of bouncing balls. In this he dances to Van Heusen's "Bounce Right Back," not much of a song but a good excuse for using him in another unique routine.

Jeanmaire was a French ballet star ("Carmen") who briefly tried her stuff in mid-50's Hollywood. She was a Leslie Caron clone complete with the same hairstyle. Her two solo numbers "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "Dream Ballet" are surprisingly good, at least the dancing portions.

Bing Crosby of course is well known to old movie buffs but others will be somewhat puzzled by his popularity. Nothing he does in "Anything Goes" sheds light on this question. He was a "popular" extremely bland singer and a horrible actor with some comic ability. In "Anything Goes" even his comedy stuff is pretty awful. Paired with Bing, O'Connor has about the same chance for success as going through a balloon shop wearing a porcupine overcoat.

The Technicolor and VistaVision completely overpower the cheap production design as well as Sidney Sheldon's (the hack writer mentioned above) weak adaptation.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

It's about time!.......2007-02-03

20th Century Fox is to be congratulated for at last releasing to DVD this excellent movie. It has remained far too long in the vault and I am glad the studio has finally taken the intiative in releasing it.

The list of the film's virtues would run pretty long, but let me single out just a few. It has a great cast, headed by Robert Mitchum who does his usual fascinating performance, and lovely France Nuyen, who has never looked more beautiful. And just when you think you've been thoroughly entertained by these actors in comes Trevor Howard to steal the show, giving a brilliant performance. The fine script is well-directed by Guy Hamilton, who always did first-class work. He keeps the story moving well with continued points of interest. The music by John Barry is compelling and the cinematography by Wilkie Cooper is nothing short of superb.

It also has one other thing to recommend it: it has, bar none, the most striking opening scene in film history.

Before screenwriter Joe Eszterhas wrote the ridiculous Showgirls, he crafted some entertaining if porous thrillers along the lines of the 1985 Jagged Edge, a taut mystery about an attorney (Glenn Close) who defends a newspaper publisher (Jeff Bridges) accused of murder. The fact that Close's character falls for him is more convenient than plausible, but it is a necessary emotional bridge for Eszterhas and the late director Richard Marquand (Eye of the Needle) to build toward a powerful finale. Scary, fun as courtroom dramas go, the film is well serviced by the two lead stars and has impressive support from costar Peter Coyote and especially from Robert Loggia, who plays Close's cop buddy. --Tom Keogh

Please,someone tell me why this movie is so well liked.......2007-03-29

Even when it came out in the 80's I found myself amazed that so many people loved this movie. If you love it then I'm about to make you mad and I'm sorry.
The plot is very thin(you can see where it's going in the first 10 mins) and so the "thrill" is lost and as for the acting, Peter Coyote and Oscar nominee Robert Loggia steal this movie when they are on screen. Jeff Bridges is always good but has little to do as the accused killer and must sit quietly in court and that leaves Glenn Close to carry the film and while she is a great actress this is far from her best work.
The film making is very sloppy here also as continuity is thrown out the door. Characters pop in and out of the movie with no explanation just to serve the plot and in some scenes Glenn Close's outfit changes walking from the jury box to the Bench. There are even a few times that you can see the boom mike in the shot. Now that is bad for an A-list project like this.
Now if you like it, then you like it and that's OK because I like some stinkers myself, but this one was a real let down to me. The supporting players rate the 2 stars.

The edge has dulled .......2006-03-14

Jagged Edge hasn't aged that well. The courtroom scenes look silly now. Jeff Bridges' character is on trial for the murder of his wife and her maid. We never hear the maid's name, we never see even a brief shot of her relatives. If found not guilty of his wife's murder apparently the court will toss out the maid's case as a freebie. Later Glen Close's character looks up and sees a tired and sad looking black woman sitting in the back of the court and she's dressed like it's 1962. I thought that was particularly lame. The minority characters are just symbols in this movie.

Ignoring the court room scenes for a moment I have to say that Peter Coyote gives a stand out performance. I also liked the old cop played by Robert Loggia. Glen Close is playing a smart woman who does two really dumb things: You don't get romantic with your client and you don't let your emotions concerning a past case ruin your understanding of the case you're working on now.

Nevertheless, Glen falls hard for her client and the scene where she looks in the linen closet and realizes that hot dangit, she's got a sadistic rapist and murderer for a lover is the best in the movie. The final scene is quite good as well. When the glass in Glen's front door is smashed it's gasp and jump in your seat time. Jagged Edge is an okay but not especially memorable movie. Unless you have to have all of Glen Close's movies it's not worth buying.

Most terrifying opening.......2006-01-11

I have to talk about this movie because everytime a Jeff Bridges movie is on TV I'm blown away by how talented the guy is. He can literally play anything and he's so underrated. Although maybe he likes staying that way so that he's not bothered by media and can play what he wants. This movie is in the 80s and has one of the most terrifying opening scenes of all time. No matter how many times I watch it, it bothers me. A killer is in a house he shouldn't be and brutally kills a woman, sadistically teasing her with rape before he does so. You see things from both the killer and victim's perspective and it gets me every time. Bridges has a sure equal in Glenn Close in one of my favorite roles of hers (minus Fatal Attraction.) This movie might be a little bit dated and have some unrealistic sequences but you wont like it any less for them. It definitely keeps you guessing until the end. I know the end and I still keep guessing. If you like Jeff Bridges, you must see this one.

If you like intelligent thrillers, that are not made for an average audience age of 14, then this is a movie you might want to check out. Jeff Bridges gives a good performance. It's wonderful to see it on DVD..

This movie is extremely well done, and raised some political controversy at the time, with Whoopi being a black woman donning "whiteface" makeup.

While many would see this movie superficially as an illustration of the "glass ceiling" for women in America, I think it is a far richer film with deeper characterizations and poignance.

Whoopi plays a smart, enterprising woman (Laurel Ayers) in an investment/banking firm. However, all of her ideas are usurped by the man (Frank), who epitomizes the sleazy old boy's network, and who takes credit for all of her ideas and hard work. When she is passed up for a promotion, that is the last straw, and she quits the firm to start her own. The clerical assistant (Sally Dugan), wonderfully played by Dianne Wiest, sees the potential in this young woman and encourages her.
When Laurel is unable to get anywhere as she attempts to start her own firm, the excuse always being, " I love the proposal, but my 'associate' would not go for it." She is about ready to throw in the towel, when Sally steps in and gets her an appointment with the hot financier in town....

Laurel realizes that being a black female is not getting her where she needs to go, so she becomes..... an elderly white male..... her newfound success soon gets her on people's radar screens, read 'Frank', and like so many success stories, if you won't be co-opted by them? They will seek to destroy you! On the verge of throwing in the towel, seeing the rat she once worked with taking credit for her work, she finds her mojo, with spectacular and hilarious results. The ultra-exclusive, white male only, club will never be the same. Sometimes the good gals DO indeed finish first!

This movie while being totally hilarious, also touches on themes of believing in yourself. Racism. Sexism. And how we treat others, as Laurel has to confront her own hypocrisy as how she treats her diamond in hiding secretary.

I never get tired of watching this movie, and am always 100% sure that guests to my home 1) have never seen this movie, and 2) thoroughly enjoy it when I show it to them.

Today I saw the Associate for the second time while I was grading written assignments. I never grade an assignment until I have read it for the second time, just in case I missed something. When an assignment exceeds my expectation I always comment by saying "Nicely Done".

You'll Love It!.......2006-08-22

Whoopi is great as Laurel Ayers, a talented stockbroker/investment officer who gets passed over for a promotion, and her male assistant gets the job instead. Like a lot of women in high-powered firms, Laurel tries to break through the glass ceiling but runs into roadblocks from the Old Boys' Network. She sets about starting her own investment firm, but nobody will do business with her until she invents a male partner by the name of Robert S. Cutty. Hilarity ensues as Laurel has to make excuses to clients why the mysterious Mr. Cutty never attends meetings, never meets clients, never talks to the press.

Dianne Wiest is a great sidekick as Laurel's assistant, a bright woman in her own right who has been kept down in dead-end positions. Timothy Daly is great as the sleazy, no-talent Frank who manages to take credit for Laurel's ideas and steal her promotion right out from under her. As the story progresses, you really end up hating this guy, which shows how good Daly's portrayal was. He never stoops to an extreme caricature of the Bad Guy, and it's quite satisfying he gets his comeuppance in the end.

Very funny film, although I thought the scene where they try to kill off Cutty in his car was a bit silly. All in all, this is a great movie to watch over and over again, and one that still rings true even today for women trying to attain high-powered positions in what is traditionally male domain.

Girl Power.......2006-07-30

Laurel Ayres (Whoopi Goldberg) is a stock broker at a high powered male dominated company before her partner forces her to quit her job.

Laurel tries to start up her own company , but nobody in NYC is interested in reading any of her ideas. That is until she invents a new partner Mr. Cutty. Then everybody that is anybody (including the Donald) want to work with her. Or do they?

Laurel gets mad when everybody is more interested in meeting Mr. Cutty than they are her, so Laurel and her assistent Betty come up with a better idea. They trie to kill off Cutty. Unfortunitly things don't work out thanks to Laurels former partner so the night that Cutty is named Business Man of the Year she decides to tell everybody who Cutty really is.

Very Funny Movie. Whoopie Goldberg and Diane Weist are hilarious in it

An Overlooked, Under Appreciated Film.......2007-04-06

This is one of my very favorite movies. It has an equal mix of humor and seriousness. Theresa Randle is an amazing actress, and she shows this in taking on her various incarnations during the movie.

At the beginning we meet a very beautiful woman who is sure she is meant to be an actor but is very unsure about herself as a woman and a person. A reading with Quentin Tarantino goes awry when she realizes there is nudity involved. She hestitantly goes through with it but quicly runs out. This doesn't bode well with her agent or her acting coach.

Her acting coach sees that she has a long way to go in acting ... and in growing up. She wishes her well as she drops her.

Looking for work, she stumbles upon a phone sex operator job. At first she is unsure about it, and is visibly stunned that not only is there a racial aspect to the job, and to the whole idea of it.

While her co-workers entertain themselves in other ways, to help in getting caught up with the job, Girl 6 doesn't and eventually becomes way too personally involved with clients. The first one is "Bob Regular."

During all this, her ex-husband tries to court her, store owners harass her thinking because she is a fantasy operator she's a prostitute as well.

Back to Bob Regular, a meeting is to take place, and she's warned by a friend/co-worker not to get involved, but she does it anyway.

She waits. She waits. She waits some more; puttiing her job on the line as she is late for work.

Finally, a man starts walking towards her; she calls out to him, but he looks at her with indifference and keeps going. Myself and others included feel that this WAS indeed Bob, but because she wasn't white (which is the pre-requisite for the operators's characters to be) he just kept walking. Or, it was just a stranger.

In any case, she is distraught and her plans of acting have been all but forgotten; claiming that she IS acting by being a phone sex operator.

As a result, she keeps working and working and working. Getting burnt out, and finally enforced to take a leave of absence.

She needs to work ... money, or just because she's getting hooked ... she decides to take a job that was previously offered by a character played by Madonna. A "home girl," Girl 6 does the phone sex job at home.

Getting further and further into the job, and giving out her personal number and address to clients is taking over; her friends don't see her, they only hear her.

It isn't until her life is threatened that she realizes she needs to break free and to change her life, and pursue the dream she had before: ACTING.

The film ends with her leaving for Hollywood and reading the same piece that she did at the beginning. Another director asks her to undress, but this time, she is determined to stay true to herself, and after giving an impressive reading, leaves. She is now sure of herself, her abilities and she has grown up and matured, and the audience noticeably sees this.

Theresa Randle does an impressive job in her role as the main character, and we learn to laugh, love, and appreciate this woman. We see her at her weakest, and we see her at her finest.

We only learn her real name at the end of the movie, which has been criticized, but this shows us that not only do we have to learn who she is, but so did she. When she hears her name, she expresses how "she likes the sound of it." It took the whole movie for her to truly find herself, and so it is finally complete when we hear it also.

Spike Lee acts in it as her roommate and friend, and does an excellent job doing so, and in directing. He uses various film techniques: colors, parody flashbacks at characters Girl 6 is inspired by, and all these really flesh out the mood or level of severity that the character is in. We are given humor to laugh as the character laughs, and to keep things from getting too morbid, but when he wants us to know things are serious, Lee ensures that we do indeed know that.

Throughout the movie, we also meet a girl through the news on t.v.; a girl who is innocent and sweet, who is injured severely, and we gain a parallel with Girl 6 herself.

Girl 6 watches the news and discovers a young girl has fallen in an elevator shaft and is in critical condition. At this point, she connects with the girl, but so do we soon see that the character really has connected.

The camera moves through the elevator shaft as if we were falling, and this effect continues at different points as Theresa Randle's character begins to fall also.

Eventually, Girl 6 and the girl meet in person which is also a link in recovery and strength.

Again, the type of photography in the movie; the colors, the realism/surrealism changes with the moods and degrees of the main character's development, and this really help to bring out the humor or seriousness of the piece.

Before she leaves for Hollywood, there is a scene where telephones of all shapes and colors fall smashing to the ground. This truly shows that Girl 6 isn't "Girl 6" any longer, but a grown woman who has conquered her fears, her addictions, and is ready to face what life has to bring her from then on.

Madonna and other notable actors/celebrities are featured throughout and they add their own distinctive personality to the film.

In conclusion, "Girl 6" is a movie is a dark comedy, a serious comedy; a mature movie offering laughter, tears, fear, and joy. It isn't for everyone, but if you're a fan of Theresa Randle, Spike Lee, Madonna, or just want something different ... something that has some weight to it, or some twisted humor, then this is definitely for you.

Girl 6 is, to put it bluntly, a mess of baffling proportion.

The stunning and talented Theresa Randle rises as far above the material as is humanly possible. But Suzan-Lori Parks' script is too implausible to pass as drama, too silly to be a comedy. And Spike Lee's direction is so poor the whole thing looks like the work of an amateur.

More can be said, but after wasting a maddening hour and 45 minutes wading through this disaster, it would be doubly aggravating to invest more than five sentences recommending this one be avoided at all costs.

This movie is unique. It doesn't really make sense to me, but i like to see it. The music was awesome. How can you go wrong with Prince. Theresa Randle is beautiful!

I knew this was going to happen sometime soon. Recently HBO has been showing Girl 6 a lot more frequently and I noticed that it was a DVD format so I knew Fox was going to release this. I actually like the movie, it has its moments. I love the soundtrack and the fact that it's a Spike Lee joint. I wonder what features will be on the DVD.

The L.A. Law reunion movie was very nice to see. The plot was a little lame and it would of been alot better if Jimmy Smits was in it. Maybe with this release they will do what other studios have done and release the series on dvd in boxed sets.

The acting was horrible. I could not follow the plot, the story line was pathetic and oh dear lord those two never ever should attempt at hillbilly accents because they suck at it.

Eye-Opener Movie.......2005-01-17

I saw this on TV last night for the first time and it definitely captured my attention. I would definitely recommend it for those who like drama - but also to make you aware of what can happen when there is abuse and neglect involved. I agree with one of the previous posts that it is really the adults (i.e. parents) who should be accountable with these kind of circumstances.
Although I was under the impression that this move is based on a true story, fortunately I wasn't able to find any evidence that the state of Oklahoma actually executed a 15-year old girl. If that had been the case - I would think the prosecuter should be brought up on charges too.

My life ended and I don't know why! I feel that a 16yr.old should not have had the gas-chamber. She never got to live her life only what her mother dealt out to her and that was nothing, I feel that it should not be a law for a 16yr.old trail for adult. These parent's should be held accountable and responsible for the children action exspecially when they cause there children to astray. I feel she didn't get a chance to live in society because drugs and man control her not her control them. When her life ended and I don't know why because it was no love for any one to supply so tell me should she have die?
I always say's if that would have been me yes the judge I would gave her life because she never had one.
I feel every one deserve a second chance no matter who and what you are because we still are a child of God's and his a forgive God why can't we be forgiving instead of killing.

I enjoyed watching this movie....it was one of Brad and Juliette's first movies!! Worth a try!
