The award-winning 1937 version of Kipling's classic Captains Courageous finds spoiled-rotten brat Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) well on the way to becoming a horrible adult, under the illusion that money can buy all happiness. The little monster falls off a cruise ship, and is fished out of the drink by Portuguese fisherman Manuel (Spencer Tracy) and brought back to his fishing boat. Though the overprivileged lad initially chafes at being put to work aboard the smelly vessel, he eventually learns the value of a day's work and learns lessons in life that make him a functional person and bring him several steps closer to manhood. Despite Tracy's indeterminate accent, he excels in his role as the boy's friend, and enthusiastic performances from the rest of the cast bring this coming-of-age tale to life. This movie is an oldie but goodie. The story is well presented and I like this version. It doesn't have the type of special effects used in the modern movies, but the story hauls you in and you feel more of the emotional effects of the action taking place. It is a classic and gives you an appriecation of the old time movie making.

Captain Corageous.......2007-06-20

Based on a Rudyard Kipling story, this heartwarming adventure saga follows the transformation of a bratty pantywaist into a decent young man under the tutelage of Tracy's gentle fisherman. Bartholomew is a natural playing the self-centered child of privilege, and really clicks with Tracy, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as the sensitive Manuel (though he hated putting on an Iberian accent). Absorbing for viewers of any age, "Captains" is a rousing tale whose bittersweet climax will not leave a dry eye on deck.

for Schooner Lovers.......2007-06-12

The story's sappy and the "special effects" are laughable for today's audiences BUT you can't beat the action scenes of sailing schooners. Many of those ships are gone now although some are still sailing, like Ernestina in New Bedford and Adventure in Gloucester. Movies like this that have irreplaceable footage of these ships provide a glimpse into the life of Grand Banks fishermen.

Kipling rewritten.......2007-05-23

In my opinion, this is the among the worst movie adaptations of a great novel! The writers thought they could improve upon Kipling's great story by killing the Mother, ignoring the great relationships between Harvey, Captain Disko and his son, creating a private school scene, to name some of the horrific changes to this great story of the sea and of redemption.

I wasn't disappointed.......2006-03-07

I had very low expectaions for this film from the outset, and I was not disappointed. Kipling's classic is one of my favourite books, and the Fleming movie as well (but I have a few issues with that too). I don't get why every version of this film has to have people getting killed or maimed. This is the third version of this film, and each remake has been a step down from the one before. Sure, the best is the 1937 version...at least there's real fishing, and great sailing. The 1977 version had lots of potential, but it fell short in so many ways...this version didn't even try. I think Robert Urich could have made a very good Disko Troop (why Matt in this film?) if only he had been given a script and director/producer who had a clue about what Kipling was writing about. Instead he was dealt an appalling waste of ink and paper by some overpaid hack (if he was paid a nickel it was too much) and the whole show is a complete shambles. Even the poor "We're Here" is a lousy performer, she is obviously a yacht, and so far from an american vessel, to say nothing of a fishing schooner as to give me the screaming heebie jeebies. It is hard to convey the desolation of the Grand Banks when you can see mountains in the background. I have no experience in movie making, but I am sure I could make a much better film than this one...anyone who wants to fund the project can find out. I'll even write the script....it can't be worse than this. This film is a Hallmark of Shame production.

This Is A Good Remake!.......2005-10-07

This remake of the original 1937 black and white Captains Courageous movie that starred Spencer Tracy is very good and I think Robert Urich was great and really played his part well and I also liked the rest of the cast, especially the child actor who played his son and the child actor who played Harvey. And this movie has inspired me to read the classic book that both movies are based on!

Pure Crap - bring back the original........2005-06-18

The original movie (available on VHS I believe) is MUCH better than this remake.

The original shows how a pain in the backside kid gets 'straightened out' by fisherman who save his life in the 1930's (the sailing scenes are increadible)..

The remake is an aboniation - a ship full of touchy feely sweet and kind sailers that nurture the brat in to a more acceptable social frame of mind. BS!

The producers of this monstrosity should be shot. See the original if you want to see a good flick!

Where's the Original????.......2003-05-06

I fail to understand how a 1996 remake of this movie can be on DVD before the original. I have never seen the remake, and will likely never. A remake, no matter how good, can only taint Spencer Tracey's performance.

Release the ORIGINAL verison! Please.
