Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 4.......2007-03-17
This was a great way for my son to watch one of his favorite shows over and over again.
Great Show, Not so Great Writers.......2006-11-11
I am a huge Hercules fan! The show is great, but it could have been better, if the show had some better writers. Season four is one of may favorites, however, I can't stand the episodes that they try to make "silly" or comical. The show is not intended to be comical, but adventurous! This season seems to be the start of when the writes go "goofy". The reason that I gave this season a 4 out of 5 star rating is that the episodes that are serious are really great! If there were no silly ones, I would give it 5 out of 5 for sure. Even though there are some poorly made episodes, the show still pulls through to be one of the most enjoyable, clean and fun shows out there! Highly recommended!
"Those fools can't see what's coming, but I can!"(Ares).......2006-08-13
This season had some awesome episodes. I very much enjoyed Armageddon Now. We get to see Hope again, her new ghastly look and all. And everyone's favorite war god Ares gets his own share of screen time this season. I also enjoyed the three part season finale. After four seasons, we finally got to see Hera! That fight scene between her and Herc was far too brief though. I was also pleased that Bruce Campbell got more screen time this season also. Gotta love Autolycus! All in all, a terrific season.
Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 4.......2004-11-14
I've enjoyed all the seasons of Hercules and this one is no exception. As with the other seasons, the audio and video transfer to DVD is very acceptable. It may not be the best season of Hercules ever, and we don't have anything that compares to the Golden Hind episodes from Season Three. However, this season is still highly entertaining with plenty of creativity and humor from the writers. I even liked seeing Hercules as a pig in Porkules!
I always like seeing Lucy Lawless come back as Xena, and she stars in two episodes, as noted below.
1. Beanstalks and Bad Eggs: Hercules sets out to find the kidnapped Lianna, and finds her caring for the Harpies' three golden eggs.
2. Hero's Heart: The goddess of luck, in an effort to erase one painful incident, erases all of Iolaus' memory.
3. Regrets... I've Had a Few: Death comes for Jaris, an old friend of Hercules.
4. Web of Desire: While burying a trunk of stolen jewels, a pirate captain is attacked by Arachne, half woman and half spider.
5. Stranger in a Strange World: gs: Lucy Lawless: A vortex into a parallel universe reveals different roles for Hercules, Xena, Zeus, Iolaus, and the Sovereign.
6. Two Men and a Baby: Nemesis leaves her six-month old son with Hercules, and tells him that he is the father.
7. Prodigal Sister: Hercules frees a blind boy from slavery. When they find his sister, they find her to be an Amazon warrier who believes she was abandoned by her parents.
8. ...And Fancy Free: Hercules volunteers to be Althea's partner in a dance competition.
9. If I Had A Hammer: When Hercules poses for a museum centerpiece, the resulting sculpture comes to life.
10. Hercules on Trial: When a Hercules impersonator is killed, Hercules is blamed and put on trial.
11. Medea Culpa: On a quest to kill one of Hera's deadly pets, Medea falls in love with Hercules and Jason falls in love with Medea.
12. Men in Pink: When accused of murder, Salmoneus and Autolycus hide out by dressing up as performers in an all-girl dance troupe.
13. Armageddon Now (1) Gabrielle's daughter frees Callisto and asks her to kill Hercules. Callisto goes back in time to kill Hercules' mother.
14. Armageddon Now (2) gs: Lucy Lawless: Iolaus goes back in time to stop Callisto from killing Hercules mother but fails.
15. Yes Virginia, There is a Hercules: Kevin Sorbo, the star of Hercules is missing after an earthquake in Los Angelos. The staff have an emergency meeting to decide how to replace him.
16. Porkules: Hercules is turned into a pig and is befriended by a female pig, Katherine.
17. One Fowl Day: Katherine is turned into a woman by Aprhodite.
18. My Fair Cupcake: Autolycus introduces his former girlfriend, Cupcake, to Prince Alexandros. Actually, Autolycus wants to steal a jewel from the prince.
19. War Wounds: Hercules' brother's wife is killed. Hercules' brother, the king of Corinth, blames Ajax's warriors.
20. Twilight: As his mother is dying, Hercules remembers when he, Jason and Iolaus fought the Parthans invading Caylan territory.
21. Top God: Zeus asks Hercules to help him rule the gods of Olympus.
22. Reunions: Hercules learns the real reason that Zeus asked him to join him on Olympus.
One of the best shows on TV.......2004-09-07
Hercules The Legendary Journey's was continually one of the best shows on TV during it's run. Season 4 stayed true to the show and true to the things that made it a smash success.
Season 4 contains all 22 episodes. The DVD doesn't really contain all that many extras, but there are some. There is commentary by directors, Kevin Sorbo, and William Hurst on some of the episodes. The DVD is spread out over eight discs.
I loved the episode "Beanstalks and Bad Eggs." It had a nice Jack and the Beanstalk tale to it and it has the King of Thieves Autolycus played by the master himself Bruce Campbell. It's a great funny episode.
Stranger in a Strange World is another great episdoe. It was the first time to my knowledge in the series that they did an alternate universe episode and they did a good job on this one. They did it more as a comedy and they do a good job with it. All the characters are the opposite to the who they normally are. It's also a good episode because Aphrodite is in it who is played by the lovely Alexandra Tydings.
Yes, Virginia, There is a Hercules is another good episode. Porkules is another great episode where Hercules is turned into a pig by Discord who is doing it to impress Ares. The episode also has Autolycus in it.
The follow up to Porkules One Fowl Day is another great episode. Discord is turned into a chicken by Iolaus and Autolycus. Ares promises revenge against the two and chains them together. It's a funny tale as the two are running through Greece together trying to get away from each other. In the meantime Hercules is escorting the pig he met in Porkules who ends up getting the body of Aphrodite. It's a great funny episode.
Disc 8 is a special CD Rom disc that is packed full of extras. It contains Chronicles, Trivia, Bios, and Mythology on all the characters mentioned in the show. There is some nice stuff and you can really learn a lot about the show. Disc 7 contains some extras about the show including how they brought all the monsters to life on the show.
This is one of the best seasons of the show. It's equal to the previous three and I'm glad to say that I own all of them. If you loved watching this show when it was on, you have to pick these seaons up. If you love mythology you will also want to pick these up. You wont regret it.

5th Season!.......2007-09-03
Well, I hate that Amazon sold out of this season. I had the first four seasons (which are great), but I held out on the last two for whatever reasons.
This season is very different from the other seasons. I think Xena may have had a bit more influence than I like to admit. There's a story arc in this season which was a different format for this show (if you exclude the Golden Hind episodes). Previous seasons would have occuring themes, characters, or places but not in several episodes after the other. So, the first few episodes were kind of a bore for me. The season picks up and becomes fun to watch from episode 6 on.
I honestly think the whole season is worth buying for the "For Those of You Just Joining Us..." episode alone. Hilarious.
I'm unsure, but I think by the 5th season Hercules wasn't as mainstream as before because I don't recall watching any of these episodes when they originally aired. I recall almost all of the first four seasons though. Maybe I too had moved on by the time this season aired back in the day. But, that is what is so great about TV DVD.
If Amazon doesn't restock anytime soon, you may be interested in buying the season on eBay. I had to look everywhere and it was sold out everywhere.
Oh, and Ryan Gosling moonlights as another character in this season for one episode while he was playing Young Hercules (spin off).
awsome with a twist.......2007-04-14
If your a Hercules fan you will love it I wont spoil it. it's a must buy
besides Herclules fans need to buy all seasons to complete the collection
it has a twist not seen in preaveuos seasons just buy and veiw you will see what i mean right away Amazon.com is the best there is so don't delay buy now
Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 5.......2007-03-17
I bought this for my son, and he is in heaven. He watches itover and over.
Huge fan disappointment..........2006-11-11
I am a huge Hercules fan! I own them all and love them! However... this season was too dark. The writers went a bit overboard with the "creepy" and evilness. This season includes more emphasis on satanic subjects. Along with this, it seems as though the writes wanted to turn the show into a comical television show and trying to make an adventure show a comedy was horrible. Again, I love the Hercules shows, but this season went down hill. I sadly have to give it 2 out of 5 stars... I am tempted to say 1, but the other episodes keep have saved this star.
My favorite season........2006-08-13
I never really watched Hercules much when I was a kid. It came on my local Fox tv network around 10 or so and I usually went to bed by then. But when it came on SciFi a few years ago, I got hooked on this season. Yeah there were several one shot episodes in both Hercules and Xena, and I'm not a big fan of shows with too many one shot episodes. But this season was amazing. I'd seen Armageddon Now from the Fourth Season, and that really peaked my interest concerning the Dahak story arc. And then when I was introduced to Hope in Xena, I wanted to get a glimpse of her father. Lucky for me, I tuned into this season when I did. Please don't spoil this season for yourself if you haven't seen it already and stop reading here.
I have to say that I was moved almost to tears when Iolaus died at the beginning of the season. I'd seen several eps of Hercules before Faith, and it was a shocker. I tuned in every day until Revelations at the end of the season. I really enjoyed the ongoing story arc. I'd never seen Hercules so torn open emotionally before. Especially during Descent and the Ireland episodes. Yeah, any hero can move mountains, but it takes a real strong man to say goodbye to a loved one. But I was happy that they brought the character of Iolaus back at the end of this season. Iolaus 2 was just a bit too weird for my tastes. But I enjoyed his character development as well. I own all six seasons of Herc and Xena, but if I had to select any season from either show as a favorite, I'd choose this one. Some interesting fights by the sound, and a fantastic story as well. Nice commentaries too. So give it a go.

Title of product is self explanatory. Any myth lover will truely love this show but don't expect all the story lines to match the "true" myths. God acting, and decent special effects. Plus K. Sorbo is hot so buy!

Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 2.......2007-03-17
I bought this for my son and he loves it he watches it over and over.
Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 2.......2007-03-08
Hercules spends another season fighting monsters and Gods. With Yeolis (his trusted side-kick) taking a more active role - and even having a couple of eppisode on him alone) this season is not just a continuation of season 1. Granted, there are some familiar routines, that still make me laugh, and familiar faces with cute sittuations, but there is also enough to keep it fresh!
Old Time Favorite.......2006-11-10
Hercules is a cheesy old time favorite. This season brings the adventures and journeys of Hercules and Iolis to your home. This season is packed full of great episodes. Each disc contains about 3 seasons. Included in this season is a disc of bloopers that contains and interview of the cast along with comical sense of the making. This season is one the best seasons in the making. The show has some good clean adventure and humor. Although some of the humor may be a little on the tacky side, it still has much entertainment to offer. I highly recommend it!

This was a great way for my son to watch one of his favorite shows over and over again.
Hercules Season 3.......2007-03-10
I thought the price was great for the number of dvds included. I am a fan so it would have been hard not to like it. Good extras included on the disks; pics and interviews. I will probably buy them all
The Best Season!.......2007-01-11
I agree with Matthew Edmundson (below), this is the best season of Hercules The Legendary Journeys.
The first episode is my favorite episode of the whole series:
Mercenary, which was directed by Michael Hurst (Iolaus).
I recommend purchasing seasons 1+2 before purchasing this season. Hercules involves a lot of recurring characters and stories that you may miss out on if you are considering buying this season first...
Some may say that this series was too corny (from other reviews I've read). But that was the point of the show. The action and the comedy were matched well together.
Best Season.......2006-11-11
I think this is the best season. I had a very close call with season four, but think that this season has shown itself worthy. It starts out with a bang! The BEST episode of All the Hercules Episodes... Mercenary which has the best story line, best acting... Highly recommended that you see this season. If you are new the the Hercules show, This season is some of the highlights of the best. Again, the show is modest and enjoyable for all ages. It's almost hard to fine good clean entertainment like this.
Hercules Rules.......2006-11-03
This is the most amazing TV series. I can watch this series over and over and never get tired of it.

Ok,but not great!.......2007-05-19
I was really looking forward to this movie a lot,but when I saw it,all I could think of was,"What a disappointment"! The storyline and voice work were excellent-I had no problem with that. My problem was with the animation. If anyone has read the Xena/Hercules comics, then I think you would agree that if the artistry of those comics had been used in this movie, the results would have been far better than what we got! I would not recommend this unless you are a die hard HTLJ or XWP fan.
Words cannot express. . ........2005-12-19
But I will try to explain the movie's effect on me. This was perhaps the worst piece of animation I have ever seen in my life. If Universal had any sort of pride (or sense), they would have at least viewed this mess and done something to fix it. I was totally disappointed in this. I wanted more Xena (and more Kevin Smith as Ares, RIP), and this was the only thing I hadn't seen, and it just made me cry.
However, it was an excellent laugh. I was giggling throughout the film from the entire absurdity of the plot and dialogue. The animation could only be weeped at (why did Xena's hair have red highlights, why was Hercules' shirt so messed up, why did all the normally attractive actors who play the roles look so horrible animated?), but the songs were so bad and the story so silly I couldn't help it.
So, if you are dying for something else Xena/Hercules (anything!), then do take this movie out of the library. It is a fun laugh with the voices of the actors on the two shows. But I wouldn't buy it unless I was a collector of the series' stuff.
Great movie but animation BLOWS!.......2005-04-07
this would have been a great movie if it was real and not animated. the animation was so crappy it ruined the movie, otherwise i give it a 3 out of 5.
great.......2004-08-31
this is a great movie for any age no matter what if you are learning about gods/godess this is the moive for you and if you just want to watch tv it is good for that.
WHAT?!?!?!?!.......2004-04-03
I bought this becuase it was a xena movie but was extermely disappointed. I am thankful they kept the original cast but I seriously think the writters and amination artist were smoking something. The Story line is not that great but it could have worked if it were live action. I think it would have been cool to see the titans as we saw many other creatures on the shows. I loved both the shows and will watch them whenever I can but have not watched this again since the first time I got it. I was hoping that they would make a Xena live action movie beucase after all Herc got four live action movies. A good Xena movie will never happen becuase Xena is 'dead' and Kevin Smith sadly died. But they could always make a Xena movie to clear up somethings from the past and Gabby could alway wear a wig or it could be something from the last seasons. Sorry I strayed but there is not anything good about this movie. Even for a die hard Xena fan it is a snooze to watch. Refers to the VHS version.

Young Hercules - The PreQual.......2007-04-11
I enjoyed the movie-length presentation of Young Hercules. It's great to see the beginnings of the relationship between Hercules and Iolaus and Jason. A great deal for any Hercules fan.
Before the Legendary Journeys..........2001-07-25
Considering they used pretty much the same production team as they did with H:TLJ, it was okay. No it wasn't the same, but it was close. This is before Hercules had his legendary journeys. It shows young Herc trying to impress his father and forging an unlikely friendship with Ioalus to help their new friend Jason, heir to the throne of Corinth. With the same crew that brought us "HTLJ" & "XWP" it's perfect.
Kevin Smith as Ares, Michael Hurst as a jeweler, & Meighan Desmond as Discord make appearances.
Simply Fantastic!.......2000-10-21
This is a really great movie! Ian Bohen's performance as the serious, yet fun teenage Hercules is truly award worthy! He seemed to capure the escence of the part that Kevin Sorbo recently made famous a bit more than Ryan Gosling, who played Young Hercules in the T.V. series. And, he's increadably cute! Dean O'Gorman played Iolas to a "T". Chris Conrad did not disappoint with his portrayal of the always serious, and determined, Young Jason. The chemistry between the actors makes the film even more enjoyable. It really looks like they're having fun working together! Another key character is Ares, played by Kevin Smith. He, as always, gives a truly inspired performance as the deliciously evil God of War. The director should really be accredited for casting such a talented group of actors, and using thier abilities to thier full potential. The breath-taking scenery of the New Zealand countryside is the backdrop of this innovative film. It was only fitting that the "Young Hercules" movie was shot in the same location of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys". The soundtrack is also amazing. It really fits the tone and overall feel of the movie. It should definately not be missed!
You Will Love This Movie.......2000-05-17
I have always loved Greek mythology so I loved this movie. I will not lie, you will get the most enjoyment out of this movie if you are a teenage girl, but it is also a good family movie. I loved the short lived :( series, so I was so excited to get this movie. Do not watch this if you like movies with really deep, complex story lines. This is just a good movie if you want to kick back and relax.
Its was okay.......2000-01-11
The story line in the movie was okay but they messed around with myths too much and the camera movement was too much

This feature-length edition of the TV series popularized on PBS and A&E is the British equivalent of "a very special episode." The incomparable David Suchet stars as Agatha Christie's impeccable Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, whose simple Christmas "repast" is disturbed by an invitation to visit the home of Simeon Lee, a repellent curmudgeon who makes Mr. Potter look like George Bailey. "My life is in danger," he states. Events snowball as Simeon is indeed killed, and a fortune in uncut diamonds stolen. As Poirot observes, a case can be made against any of the family members Simeon gleefully tormented. It is "all very clever, no doubt," even though Barney Fife could probably figure out who's behind this "intricate web of deception." Still, keep your eyes and ears open, as Simeon compels Poirot. "Putting two and two together" is all the confounding fun in this mystery for all seasons. --Donald Liebenson

Poirot at Christmas.......2007-07-12
I am an avid fan of David Suchet's Poirot and I have all the DVD releases. This is one I enjoyed very much. As in the book, no Captain Hastings in this one, but the loyal Inspector Japp is rescued from his Christmas vacation at the in-laws to head the case. It's one of Christie's better stories with a great ending. While not as detailed and engrossing as the book, it's still an intertaining view.
Great Job.......2007-02-02
They did a fantastic job on this one when adapting it from the book. By eliminating a few of the characters from the book, I think they actually made the story easier to follow with better flow. Though my favorites of the film series are Sad Cypress and Death on the Nile, this comes in third. I don't think they took anything away from Agatha Christie's work by changing it slightly and eliminating a handful of characters. Of course, they had a great story to work with. This is one of her most interesting books with great history worked into the motive and plot. Great job on this film. Recommended to watch over and over again.
Best Poirot episode I've seen.......2005-12-06
I like the excellent Poirot series, usually because it is a calm, mildly amusing, predictable show set in the 1930s, with vintage Art Deco pieces and British aristocrats. Poirot himself is an amusing, somewhat eccentric oddball, a rational, skeptical, quite reserved and proper gentleman.
It is true, and can be construed as a criticism, though I find it a strength, that every Poirot episode is cut of the same cloth, very similar. Poirot never changes and is always the same. But this is part of the charm. Poirot grows on one.
This particular episode ranks as the best Poirot I have yet seen. Highly recommended.
Delightful, Subtly Humorous; Poirot is charming .......2005-08-07
Adapted by Clive Exton, this 1994 production of Christie's novel, Hercule Poirot's Christmas (1938), provides viewers with another fine mystery with the pitch perfect David Suchet playing the famous Belgian detective. Exton manages to capture well the professional yet affectionate relationship between Chief Inspector James Japp (Philip Jackson) and Poirot. In one scene, executed with subtle humor, Poirot opens his Christmas gift (from Japp) and Poirot's reaction is priceless. The reference to the same gift at the end of the program is also amusing, if only to emphasize Poirot's gracious acceptance of an unwanted item which Japp knowingly recognizes.
It is this easy humor which makes this particular mystery entertaining given the dark backdrop in which the events take place. The focus rests on an aged patriarch, Simeon Lee (Vernon Dobtcheff), a greedy and sadistic man, whose intention to alter his will during the Christmas season leads to his violent death. Scattered throughout Gorston Hall remain his extended family and servants, all possible suspects in another example of a locked room mystery.
Mr. Exton's adaptation wisely omits several characters thereby lessening the confusion slightly. While this choice makes possible the coherence of a plot which must unfold in under two hours, I was slightly disappointed that Exton excised the clue of the `excess blood' which was significant to the novel. Although this removal does not ruin the story itself, it lessens Christie's intention, which was for her, an unusual choice.
Christie wrote Hercule Poirot's Christmas and dedicated the novel to her brother-in-law, James, with the promise of writing a tale with greater violence (and blood) given his criticism of her previous novels possessing an "antiseptic" flavor to them. By emphasizing the blood which poured forth from the hapless Simeon Lee, we readers feel a bit vindicated that a disreputable man has met with his just desserts. Recommended viewing for a cold, wintry night.
Christmas in Shropshire........2004-12-26
It is supposed to be a quiet holiday, Hercule Poirot's Christmas, with a simple repast and a box of exquisite Belgian chocolates. And he's been looking forward to it - unlike Scotland Yard's Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson), for whom a visit to his wife's Welsh relatives is forecast. "If they start singing again ..." he groans wistfully after the pre-Christmas lunch with Poirot which he expects to be his last decent meal until the beginning of the new year.
But when Poirot is about to sit down for dinner that night, he registers a faint chill in his apartment - first his wine is a tad too cold, then he is even compelled to put on a blazer - and to his horror, he discovers that his radiator has gone cold. What is worse, his landlord informs him that it won't be fixed until after Christmas. And so, when he receives a phone call from cantankerous, wheelchair-bound old Simeon Lee (Vernon Bobtcheff), asking him to spend the holidays at his Shropshire estate Gorston Hall because his life may be in danger, Poirot has only one material question: "Tell to me, if you please, Monsieur Lee: Does your house have the central heating?"
Yet, even after his arrival in Shropshire, Poirot isn't quite sure what is expected of him; and unfortunately Mr. Lee, who made his fortune prospecting diamonds in South Africa, doesn't greatly elaborate - only that he (Lee) intends to make an announcement which will give his family, who already hate and fear him, even greater cause for hatred; and that Poirot is to keep his eyes and ears open. "Bien, what am I looking for? What am I listening for?" the detective inquires. "You'll know when it happens," is Lee's terse response. But later that night, after old Simeon has informed his family that he is about to make a new will to accommodate his just-returned third son Harry (Brian Gwaspari) and his Spanish granddaughter Pilar (Sasha Behar) - which inter alia means scrapping the allowance of Harry's brother George (Eric Carte), a Member of Parliament - and after he has then sent them off again, not without putting them down as "a set of mamby pamby weaklings," a loud crash and a scream reminiscent of the squeal of a slaughtered pig emanates from Simeon's room, and when the door (locked from inside) is finally broken open, they find him lying there with his throat slashed, the room in total disorder and looking like a battlefield - and the diamonds that Simeon had recently ordered to be sent from his company's museum in Pretoria are gone from his safe.
Now, of course, Poirot's task begins in earnest; and since Wales is just across the border, he quickly resolves to save Japp from his over-exuberant, carol-loving in-laws and invite him to join the investigation. Together with Shropshire Police Superintendent Sugden (Mark Tandy) they set out to find a murderer who may equally likely have tried to prevent the alteration of old Mr. Lee's will, steal his diamonds, or have had a different motive altogether - for as Simeon himself had boasted to both Pilar and Poirot, he had been "a very wicked man" and didn't regret it; in fact, he had "enjoyed every moment:" killing, stealing, lying, and producing a legion of sons born "on the wrong side of the blanket" in the process. As Poirot quickly discovers, almost every member of the household has not only a motive for murder but also a flimsy alibi at best: not only George who, like his young wife Magdalena (Andree Bernard) is deeply in debt, but even George and Harry's brother Alfred, who stands to inherit the lion's share of the fortune after having stayed at home and taken care of his father together with his wife Lydia (Catherine Rabett), enduring humiliation upon humiliation over the years. Then there is Pilar who, it turns out, has a few secrets of her own; Harry's reconciliation with his father is only a recent one (and who says it was honestly felt anyway?); valet Horbury (Ayub Khan Din) has yet other reasons to fear the police - and there is also an elderly lady (Olga Lowe) staying at a nearby inn, who likewise shows a peculiar interest in the goings-on at Gorston Hall.
While plot-wise relatively standard Christie fare - complete with locked room, country estate, belligerent patriarch, shockingly young wives, a prodigal son returning home after a promise of "fatted calf" (to the displeasure of his demure "stay at home, stick in the mud" brother(s)), sudden testamentary changes and other motives galore - and although Christie's imagination may have gone a bit overboard, as I am not sure the solution would have worked in reality quite the way it is described here, this adaptation of "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" is a delightful entry in the canon featuring David Suchet, as always the perfect embodiment of the little Belgian with the many "little grey cells" and perfectly waxed moustache, whom a speck of dust would cause greater pain than even a bullet, and who cannot eat his breakfast eggs unless they're exactly the same size. Faithful to Dame Agatha's novel in setting and atmosphere, like a number of other installments this episode cleverly varies the series's distinctive title melody in tune and instrumentation so as to underline its specific seasonal backdrop and Shropshire locale; which to my mind even makes it reminiscent of the title melody of the "Cadfael" adaptations, likewise set in Shropshire and originally broadcast by ITV. Fans of Poirot's sidekick Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) may be a bit disappointed to find him missing - but this is still a fine Christmas gift from Dame Agatha, David Suchet and company, and as always there is plenty of banter between Poirot and Japp as well ... and an amusing little subplot involving their mutual Christmas presents.
"Ah, Chief Inspector, you have been thinking again - I have warned you of this before ..." (Poirot to Japp, after listening to his theory on the murder.)
Customer Reviews:
Three brothers, three religions, three lots of fun.......2006-08-22
A wonderfully cheesy Hindi film from the late 1970s when flares were in vogue and disco ruled the world. Even now some 30 years on, this film still holds its own and is as charming now as it was then but with the added bonus of subtitles to help those people along whose Hindi is somewhat scratchy or in my case totally none existent.
This is a typical Hindi film with a zillion songs, lots of fancy dance routines along with the usual flimsy plot following the fate of three young brothers who find themselves being raised as a Hindu, Muslim and Christian respectively when they are separated from each other after their father goes on the run from the police and their mother disappears.
"Amar, Akbar, Anthony" is a film with no genre whatsoever; it is a drama, comedy, adventure, musical and love story all rolled into one, with the actors and actresses singing and dancing their way through a series of impossible events that culminate in everyone getting their girl, and the mother and father being reunited after 20 years apart.
This is escapism in its literal sense but it is great fun to watch and you will soon find yourself booing the baddies and cheering on the goodies. Oh yes this film has goodies and baddies, kidnapped girls (who happen to be very beautiful) and heroic rescues from burning buildings, the odd miracle or two, along with a forced marriage, one funeral, an act of vengeance and a delightful scene of riding off into the sunset that will have you laughing and cheering from beginning to end.
With an excellent cast of characters playing the lead roles, all you can do is sit back, pop open a bag of pakoras and munch your way through Hindi movie heaven.
