5 out of 5 stars One of Bob Hope's best .......2007-07-06

Lots of mystery, romance, and fun with a young Bob Hope
and lovely Paulette Goddard.
Bob Hope gets mixed up with the mob, then meets
Paulette Goddard (who has meanwhile inherited
a haunted castle in Cuba). Bob Hope escapes the cops
from the hotel in New York via Paulette's steamer trunk.
They see the sights in Cuba; and
decide to check out the castle themselves. They
run into zombies, murder, and assorted creepiness.
Also, the B/W print is beautiful on the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars The Ghost Breakers.......2007-06-25

George Marshall's raucous comedy with goose-bumps is vintage Hope, who works extremely well with the seductive Goddard (newly divorced from real-life husband Charles Chaplin). Also on-hand are a menacing Paul Lukas, and-could it be-a very young Anthony Quinn! Black actor Willie Best also makes the best of a stereotypical part, and he and Hope give Jack Benny and Rochester a run for their money. If you're in the mood for laughs with some thrills thrown in, here's your movie.

5 out of 5 stars Ghost Breakers.......2007-06-11

Cute comedy based on a mysterious villian trying to scare the stubborn female away from her newly inherited castle in Cuba. When Bob Hope finds she is in trouble, he comes to her rescue. At the time, this might have been scary, but now it is just funny. There was a sequel made about 10 years later with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin called "Scared Stiff"

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Wrong With This Movie.......2007-06-04

I first saw The Ghost Breakers when I was a kid...One moment as I digress...It was on the Family Film Festival, a regular weekend movie show staring Tom Hatten. He would interview his guest which may have been an actor, writer, producer of the movie he was going to show, he'd give a synopsis of the plot, show the film, and then come back to close out the show and wet our appetites for the following week. The day he happened to show this film, it was raining, it was perfect!.....Now back to the movie....It is classic black and white, with Hope at his best for comedy. There is murder, mystery, intrigue, romance, and comedy, everything you could ever want in a movie. I don't want to put in any spoilers so I will only tell you, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! Follow Hope and Goddard as they get mixed up with the wrong group of people, travel with them to Cuba and Goddard's inherited haunted house. Willie Best puts in a teriffic performance. This movie is a hidden jewel. Rent it, Buy it, Borrow it, Give it as a gift! A good amount of bonus material as well.

If you like this movie you'll also like The Cat and The Canary albeit much harder to find. The same people who made this movie made that one as well, along with Hope and Goddard, the comedy isn't as rampant but still funny, a little darker too.

Before coming to America to make such acclaimed films as Tender Mercies and Driving Miss Daisy, Australian director Bruce Beresford made a lasting impression with this compelling courtroom drama, considered one the finest films of the Australian new wave of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Based on a true story about three soldiers in the Boer War who are served up as political scapegoats of the British Empire, the film uses a flashback structure to dramatize the courtroom testimony. It begins when the three Australian soldiers are railroaded for the justified killing of a German missionary and placed on trial for court-martial not as a matter of justice, but to mollify the German government for the sake of political expediency. Burdened with a competent but inexperienced and hopelessly disadvantaged lawyer, the soldiers realize that their fate has been sealed and the outcome of their trial is a fait accompli. Unfolding with urgent precision and a riveting focus on its well-drawn characters, Breaker Morant was the all-time box-office hit in Australia at the time of its release in 1980, and it remains one of the very best historical dramas ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Description

New hi def color transfer made from 35 mm interpositive - picture: 16x9 Anamorphic 1.85:1 presentation, 5.1 surround sound, subtitled in English, French and Spanish, commentary with director Bruce Beresford, 20 minute interview with actor Edward Woodward, in-depth character breakdown, photo gallery and original theatrical trailer. Synopsis: Based on a true story, Breaker Morant is the tale of three soldiers who are court-martialed at the end of the Boer War. When one of their comrades is ambushed and killed, three soldiers (Edward Woodward, Brian Brown and Lewis Fitz-Gerald) seek revenge and kill a Boer Solider. The act of murder and the mysterious disappearance of a German missionary leads to the arrest of the three men. In one of the most controversial court-martials in military history, they are defended by Major Thomas (Jack Thompson), small town Australian solicitor who has only been given one day to prepare the case.

5 out of 5 stars Breaker Morant.......2007-07-06

One of the high points in Australian cinema, Beresford's devastating film recounts the true story of Australian soldiers martyred for political expediency. Accurately depicting the injustice visited upon these three "colonials" by their British commanders, "Morant" is also a magnificent character study. Thompson is terrific as the lawyer who defends the men, but Woodward's resonant, heart-rending performance in the title role is reason enough to see this stunning film.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further for the finest war movie ever made.......2007-03-03

Brilliantly adapted from a true story, poignantly filmed and outstandingly produced and acted, "Breaker Morant" stands alone at the big heap of great war movies. It's all here, of course: battle scenes, commando ambushes, honor, valor, betrayal, executions and a real 'kangaroo court martial'. The accused's fates are sealed from the opening salvo, as we bear witness to another example of the vast British empire taking no prisoners of its own, leaving innocent soldiers of the Commonwealth hung out to dry to protect its own repugnant brand of morality. The viewer senses this early on, but is compelled to watch every frame of this magnificent film. It will move you as few other films will, on almost every level of human compassion, duty and truth. In a film in which every line counts, the best line, quite possibly, is spoken by Lieutenant Morant, "These days its quite easy to be on the wrong side". A masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars A Story And A Metaphor.......2007-02-16

Breaker Morant, a fine Australian film made a generation ago, can be viewed in one of two ways, either being equally valid. It tells a straightforward story of true events that came to pass after the Boer War ended in 1900, in which a pair of valiant Colonial soldiers, one of whom a former horse "breaker" named Morant, are executed by firing squad in a probable and in some quarters still infamous miscarriage of justice. Victory having been achieved in this unpopular South African war, the British begin to mend fences with the uneasy Boer population and to that end seek out scapegoats whose punishment might appease Boer resentment over the savagery with which the British waged their anti-guerilla fight in the closing days of the hostilities. Selecting veterans responsible for the "execution" of members of a Boer partisan group, the British hierarchy gives world-wide center stage to this trial, and later to the punishment of two men (a third member of the accused trio is later spared death) most directly at the heart of the incident in which armed Boers masquerading as civilians died. This judicial action divided segments of the British population and engendered considerable resentment in Australia, as the soldiers put to death were brave and loyal military members, much needed by the Empire in a time of war and suddenly dispensable in a time of uneasy peace. It should also be noted that the Boers the condemned men shot that day were almost certainly guilty of being clandestine insurrectionists responsible for direct attacks on British forces in a conflict in which the distinctions between friend and foe had long since blurred and in which the rules of "civilized" Victorian-era combat had broken down in a very modern way.

And of course as I mentioned Breaker Morant is also unavoidably metaphorical, as it was somewhat intended to be. The men killed by firing squad were a sort of "anymen" fighting in "anywar" be they British in Africa a century since, Americans in Vietnam forty years ago, or service personnel in Iraq today. In war there will always be cruelties, human beings under great pressure will on occasion snap, and when faced with an enemy who clothes himself in the guise of civilians, an individual's judgment of right and wrong will always fade from sharp focus.

Breaker Morant is a good film, and its story is universal.

And sad.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless view of the politics of war and empire building.......2007-01-20

I can't say enough about this film. The plot, the characters and the actors who play them are excellent. It is the kind of film that one can watch time and again, and each time, catch another detail that makes the film more meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars Underappreciated Gem.......2007-01-12

This movie is very well done, with crisp performances by all participants. Based on actual events, it tells the story from a very pro-Aussie anti-British point of view. Regardless of this bias, the story is well told , believable and moving. Quite a thought provoking, yet enjoyable drama. (BTW, I have heard that this was Ronald Regan's favorite film, not sure if that was true or not.)

3 out of 5 stars Uneven quality but contains some great stuff.......2007-08-09

This survey of the various musical cultures of Istanbul attempts to fairly represent the enormous variety of musics in that city. It's an ambitious film that falls somewhat short, but nonetheless contains some extraordinary musical performances that make this DVD well worth buying and seeing repeatedly. I could quibble with the director over his choice to devote so much coverage to rap and heavy-metal rock musicians. The latter are especially bad, even by the standards of heavy-metal, and are basically lacking completely in any kind of musical artistry or skill. It's hard for me to comprehend how these naive and immature musical duffers could be given such a considerable amount of time in this film, which also features some truly great musical artists. The best thing for the viewer is to skip the first half of the movie and jump to the second half, where the really good stuff is. Especially strong are the performances by Selim Sesler, Brenna MacCrimmon, the great Kurdish singer Aynur, Mercan Dede, and Sezen Aksu. Unfortunately only a short amount of time was devoted to Mercan Dede, the great ney player, but he was one of the more interesting artists in the film. Aynur was certainly one of the great standouts in the film. Her performance is astoundingly beautiful and absolutely mesmerizing. Sezen Aksu is another extraordinarily beautiful singer whose performance near the end of the film is very moving. In general though the movie appears to be poorly thought out and poorly put-together. There are far too many scenes featuring the German bass-player Alexander Hacke, basically doing nothing but trying to look cool at all times, walking the streets of Istanbul or leaning out of a window overlooking the city while smoking a cigarette. Why he was a part of the filmmaking team at all is a great mystery, since he contributes nothing to the film. I would have appreciated a more serious effort to look at the deep cultural roots of Turkish music instead of this superficial survey. For example, nothing whatever is mentioned about the importance of Sufi music in Turkish musical culture. There is one very brief interview with a Sufi monk who only describes the symbolic significance of his clothes! No mention is made of the great importance of Sufi music and no Sufi music is ever played in this film. Instead the director seems to be more interested in portraying the superficial grunge of Istanbul and talking to pretentious hipsters. Still, although the movie does have a lot of weaknesses, its strong qualities are so VERY strong that it's definitely worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars "To understand the place, you have to listen to the music it plays".......2007-04-12

German-born Turkish director Faith Akin captures in his film the endless variety of the different styles in music and songs in Istanbul, a city that is a bridge between East and West, a city that is uniquely located on both sides of the Bosporus, in Europe and in Asia. Kurdish dirges represented by Aynur, who performs her own brand of Kurdish gospel music, passionate and melodic. We are introduced to Romany instrumentals, to Orhan Gencebay, who has been called the Elvis of Arabesque music - sounds of music are heard everywhere in the city as Faith Akin takes us into underground clubs, to the street performers, and to recording sessions. German bassist Alexander Hacke who comes to Istanbul to play and to learn about Turkish music quotes Confucius, "To understand the place, you have to listen to the music it plays". Akin's fine documentary does just that - gives us 90 minutes of music that helps to cross the bridges. For me, watching the movie was especially interesting because I recently visited Istanbul as a part of my vacation and spent four days there. The city fascinated me by its images, colors, crowds, vibrancy and visual beauty. Now, I can add the sounds of music to the ever-changing portrait of Istanbul

5 out of 5 stars Istanbul Experience Without Being There.......2007-03-29

This movie was recommended to me by a friend. I delayed watching it for a while since I was not sure about what I would find. Watching it, I witnessed an adventurous collection of interviews, jam sessions and of course music. The adventure that I am referring is to the diverse variety of individuals and styles represented in the movie. I was stunned by some of what I saw but enjoyed every bit.

Most of the dialogue is in Turkish which is a gift for native speakers. The people, the places and the music all work together in creating a mood that is hard to describe. I liked it very much.

An unexpected surprize is the session with Sezen Aksu. She is defient, confident and outright amazing in her mastery of her art.

The last session, filmed on a boat at sunset on the Bosphorus is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing !!! .......2007-01-12

This is a great documentary film about music and musicians in Istanbul. All different kinds of music. Not just traditional but pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, classical, vocals, instrumental..... and many different kinds of instruments too. Istanbul is an interesting place. It has western and eastern influence. This film is quite different from the image that you see on the cover. So, forget about the picture of the cover and just try watching. It is COOL.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating musical portrait of Istanbul.......2006-10-13

Having been involved in preparing the soundtrack for Fatih Akin's film "Head-On" (which I highly recommend, though if you're reading this review, you probably already know it), the bass player for the legendary German rock band Einstürzende Neubauten came back to Istanbul to further explore contemporary Turkish music, which he'd gotten a taste of and liked. The result is a fascinating musical portrait of Istanbul, including gypsy music, rap (I'm no expert, but Ceza may be doing the most interesting hip-hop ever recorded outside the US), a Canadian woman (Brenna MacGrimmon) who had fallen in love with old Istanbul whorehouse ballads and learned to sing them in flawless Turkish, Turkey's superstar Sezen Aksu, the "godfather" of "Arabesque" Orhan Gencebay, as well as Kurdish, Sufi, and street musicians. For my money, this is at least as good as "The Buena Vista Social Club" and has the potential to do for Turkish music what that film did for Cuban music, given the right marketing. And by the way, the soundtrack is also available on CD.
I'd like to take the opportunity to plug some other Turkish work that I think would be interesting for fans of "Crossing the Bridge". I am very glad to see that two films ("Vizontele"Vizontele [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Germany ] and its sequel "Vizontele Tuuba"Vizontele Tuuba [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Germany ]) by one of Turkey's leading directors and comic actors, Yilmaz Erdogan, are now available on Amazon (albeit only as imports from Germany which don't play on standard US DVD players). I wish the same were true for the marvelous soundtracks to those films and other CDs by the group Kardes Türküler, one of the best groups performing music based on the folk traditions of various Anatolian peoples (including Turks, Kurds, Armenians, Georgians, and others). Unfortunately only one of their CDs is listed on AmazonDogu, and even it is out of stock as I write. Somebody should do something about this - this is wonderful stuff that certainly deserves a wide audience outside Turkey.

Made in the heady days of movies like Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit, when CB radios were expected to create the kind of communication network the Internet has provided, Breaker! Breaker! tells the tale of J.D. Dawes (Chuck Norris of Good Guys Wear Black and TV's Walker, Texas Ranger), a trucker in tight jeans and a blonde shag. While J.D. is defending his arm-wrestling reputation in a truck stop poolroom, his younger brother Billy is being taken advantage of by the crooked cops of Texas City, California, a former ghost town turned would-be tourist trap, run by a corrupt judge named Joshua Trimmings. When the scam gets out of hand, Billy disappears--and J.D. comes to town to find him. There are many campy things to appreciate about Breaker! Breaker! (the sequined collar of the shirt Norris wears during a meditation teaching, or the glorious air-brushed eagle on Norris's van), and by contemporary Jackie Chan/The Matrix standards the fighting is slow and unspectacular--but ironically, this actually gives the action some grit and makes the blows feel more visceral than the wild flips and kicks of more recent movies. The chase scenes have surprising momentum, and there's some fine scenery-chewing by George Murdock as the wicked judge. And for a curious bit of trivia, Jack Nance--who must have been playing the lead in David Lynch's Eraserhead concurrent with Breaker! Breaker!--plays a trucker friend of Norris's. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Chuck Norris ("Walker, Texas Ranger") puts the pedal to the metal in this hard-driving action/adventure exploding with heart-pounding chases and slam-bang martial arts battles. As powerful as an 18-wheeler and as fast-moving as a lethal karate chop, Breaker! Breaker! pushes the throttle wideopen for nonstop excitement. When trucker Billy Dawes (Michael Augenstein) vanishes duringhis first solo run, his older brother, J.D. (Norris), sets out in search of answers. What J.D. finds, however, is a deadly conspiracy involving a corrupt small-town judge (George Murdock) and a ring of thieves who prey upon unsuspecting motorists. With help from a beautiful local woman (Terry O'Connor), J.D. searches for his brother and battles the criminals with his amazing karate skills, fighting all the way to an explosive final showdown that may just destroy the entire town!

5 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Not Good Either.......2007-02-24

This picture was made back in 1977 and I don't remember where I saw it at. This was a very young and very blonde Chuck Norris who played the role of John David Dawes. Also George Murdock plays the role of Judge Trimmings and terry O'Conner plays the role of Arlene. When John returns home he goes to see his brother who's riding a dirt bike. John brother Billy wants to drive a big rig and take a load of something somewhere. So John agrees to let Billy take a load gets to a small town in Texas. Billy gets into trouble with a Joshua Trimmings who's a crooked Judge that runs the small town. When John fines out that Billy never made it, he heads towards Texas to fine him. Breaker, Breaker, wasn't the best movie but it wasn't that bad. I give this movie 7 weasel stars basically for its action.

3 out of 5 stars A Dated, But Okay Effort For Norris' First Starring Role.......2007-01-11

During the CB (Citizen Band) radio craze of the 70's, Chuck Norris began his very successful leading man career by appearing in this film.

Norris plays a trucker whose brother gets caught up in a speed-trap town whose leaders don't mind killing to maintain control. Of course, truckers unite by using the CB radios, Norris kicks lots of butt, and a good reckneck time is had by all.

The CB focus, fashions and trends are very dated, and the movie isn't good enough to overcome these limitations. But it works as a cheap action flick and curio timepiece. Breaker, Breaker is far from Norris' best, but he has also done much, much worse.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a Laugh.......2006-02-13

Chuck Norris's brother is hauling freight through a small Texas Town when the local sherif arrests him on a trumped up charge. The town confiscates the load, kidnaps his brother, and puts him in jail.
This causes chuck to go into the town and start opening a king sized can of whoop but. Bad acting, good fight seens, and a poor story line all combine for a pretty good movie. I'd buy this movie just to laugh at the out of date 1960-1970 fasions.

5 out of 5 stars they don't make B-movie action films like this any more.......2005-03-07

and it's a shame, these days most direct to video b-movies are not all that great, but back then, they were fun, sure the acting and story are not the best, but it's fun, and really that's what you come for right? fun, good action with some funny scenes in there.

the action may not seem like much next to the jackie chan movies or the post-matrix world and that's a shame, Chucks action always seemed more real, down and dirty, his hits meant something, when he does his big kicks, you know that hurt.

the movie held up better than i thought it would, i saw it again for the first time in years just minutes ago, it has some 70's styles and look, but really it's more of a timeless western feel they have going on, chuck is the stanger coem to clean up "texas city" and save his brother, he faces down the locals, has a great fight or 20, gets the girl and walks off into the sunset.

3 out of 5 stars Semi-Trucks, CB Radios, Frozen TV Dinners and Chuck Norris!!.......2005-02-02

This short (65 minutes) movie features Chuck Norris as a truck drivin' guy who just happens to be an expert in karate. Chuck is J.D. Dawes, a good name for a trucker if there ever was one, and he comes home to find his kid brother riding dirt bikes in the obligatory two-brothers-bonding scene. Well, before you know it, little brother is off on a haul, alone of course, gonna pick up some frozen TV dinners for delivery. Gee, I hope something doesn't happen to him along the way.

Meanwhile a group of ne'er-do-wells, led by corrupt judge Trimmings (George Murdock, actually pretty good to watch) have founded Texas City, California. Among Texas City's many fine civic industries are crooked cops, a corrupt judicial system, kidnapping, moonshine and selling pilfered automobiles for scrap metal. At the town meetings, they give reports on all the fine progress their new little town is making. All is well until they kidnap Chuck Norris' little brother using false charges. I reckon they're gonna get their tails whipped.

(Apparently the residents of Texas City had never seen a Chuck Norris film - too bad for them, eh? They messed with the wrong guy's little brother driving a semi-truck of frozen TV dinners).

The acting runs from decent to horrible, depending upon where you are in the film. The cinematography is OK, especially for a low-budget film like this one. In one scene, Chuck pulls up in the semi-truck with the set lights brightly reflecting off the grill/front of the truck. As he moves out of frame, you can actually see them dim the set lights, fading on the truck. Then, there's a bit of high school acting from a "concerned" lady who speaks with Chuck. Aye carumba.

John Di Fusco as Arney does a decent job as the slow-witted, Gomer-Pyle-lookin' brother of the owner of the auto repair station in Texas City. He becomes a pivotal character because of his good heart. Miranda Garrison is pretty good as the barmaid-floozy, whom the judge hangs out with when he's not busy stealing other people's money. She's kinda got a weirdo-nutty thing going on with her doll collection though. Unfortunately, some of the other extras must have taken some acting lessons from the dolls. Oh and there's a couple of guys who shoot at approaching cars just to keep 'em out. Real nice town, that Texas City, eh?. I'm surprised there wasn't a banjo and a guitar faintly dueling somewhere in the distance.

Like all good stories, what goes around comes around. The calvary is a little bit different this time, but effective nonetheless. And there's a little slow-mo fighting with martial arts (bet that caught ya by surprise) where the director uses a bit of artistic license. If you're a Chuck Norris fan, you'll probably find enough about this film to like and it's PG-13 for language. Other decent Chuck Norris films are "Good Guys Wear Black" and "The Hero and the Terror" and "Code of Silence" is pretty good, though being about Chicago mobsters makes it pretty rough in some spots.

And it must be said, the CB radio craze was in full swing when this movie was produced. Surprisingly, it's not overdone in this film. Bit of trivia: The art direction for "Breaker, Breaker" was done by Thomas Thomas (who also designed the van Chuck drives with a huge eagle on it). I just wondered if he was the guy who came up with the name for the movie.

Well, y'all have yourself an outstanding day, keep the greasy side down, watch out for them four-wheelers and Smokey Bear. We gone, bye-bye!

4 out of 5 stars Pay the Price.......2007-03-20

One of Army football coach Colonel Blaik's favorite quotes was "You Have to Pay the Price". For some Army cadets who played under Blaik during the 1950's, that meant being dismissed from West Point and the team for cheating on exams. This film tells the true story of the cheating scandal that shocked the nation involving the Army football team of 1951. Actor Scott Glen plays the stoic task master Coach Blaik, whose Army teams dominated college football throughout the 1940's. When a cheating scandal infiltrates the ranks of Blaik's team, the tenets of honor, loyalty, friendship, and truth are brought into question. The film does capture the flavor of 1950's football with accurate versions of helmets, jerseys, and straitlaced young men. Good all around performances from the actors who portrayed the challenged cadets . Viewers will not see gridiron action or recreations of Army football greatness; instead viewers become involved with the drama of compromised morals. I wish the character of Vince Lombardi would have been expanded in the film, but the focus is on the six or seven players whose honor has become tarnished. After the scandal, football was de-emphasized at West Point. Although Army still plays Divison I powerhouses on their fall schedule, they have not had many winning seasons over the last fifty years and no Bowl invitations. The extra archival footage on the DVD is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Code Breakers.......2007-01-03

Very good portrayal of a challenging event in West Point history. The additional coverage with interviews of men like Pete Dawkins, Jack Jacobs , Norm Schwartzkopf and Roger Staubach provided superb background for an understanding of the Honor Code issue.

4 out of 5 stars untitled.......2006-11-10

The movie is not bad but the extras on the DVD are a must for any fan of Army football.

5 out of 5 stars Honor code to school vs honor code to classmates.......2006-07-30

Not really a football movie or a military one, ESPN's made-for-TV "Codebreakers" is really a compelling and powerful coming-of-age film about a group of cadets at West Point, based upon a true story that happened in 1951.

Before the dominance of the NFL among the public, it was college football that received the most attention, and the highest ranked team was usually Army, under Coach Earl "Red" Blaik. With a demanding practice schedule interfering with their studies, and Coach Blaik "do whatever it takes to win" attitude, many of the players found it easy to justify passing answers to exams to each other, even though it was clearly a violation of West Point's revered honor code. This had been going on for many years, supposedly unknown by those in charge, and even Blaik's own son, a junior and quarterback on the team, was a participant.

One football player offered to get answers for an exam for his (non-player) roommate, who went to the commander and blew the whistle on the scandal, only to get shunned by his classmates as well as his own father for his apparent disloyalty to his classmates. The resulting investigation resulted in charges brought against 90 cadets, and threatened the existence of the football program at West Point.

Most of the film deals with the interactions between the cadets involved in the cheating, essentially pointing out that loyalty to the school's honor code in this instance seemed to conflict directly to loyalty to one's fellow cadets and the football team, which many of the players saw as a surrogate family under Coach Blaik. It perfectly captures the spirit of its time, and highlights some commendable performances from its young cast, which include Zachary Bryan ("Home Improvement"), Corey Sevier ("North Shore") abd Jeff Roop. Veteran character actor Scott Glenn turns in a subtle but powerful performance as Coach Blaik.

DVD extras include deleted scenes, documentaries about the Army football team, and an interesting "Making of.." featurette that includes how they "assembled" a huge Army/Navy football game out of pieces shot in different locations.

Description

Wimbledon - The Record Breakers is a powerful, revealing account of some of the most important records to have been achieved at The Wimbledon Championships in the modern era.

In 1985 Boris Becker shocked the world by winning the Men's Singles Final at the age of 17. Becker recalls his magical journey to become the youngest men's champion, the first German and the first unseeded player to win the Men's Singles title. With nine Ladies Singles titles to her name, the naturalized American Martina Navratilova is the most successful woman to have played at Wimbeldon. From her first singles success in 1978 to her last in 1990, Martina recalls her path to record breaking glory. In 1979 Navratilova helped Billie Jean King to achieve a record twenty titles with their success in the Ladies Doubles Final, a feat which Martina herself has now equalled. Navratilova's namesake Martina Hingis from Switzerland became the youngest champion to win the Ladies Doubles title in 1996. Hingis remembers what it was like to achieve that feat and to go on to win the Ladies Singles crown the following year.

With a record seven Men's Singles titles, Pete Sampras is arguably the greatest men's Wimbledon champion of all time. He remembers his first victory against fellow American Jim Courier in 1993 and other classic finals against Boris Becker, his compatriot Andre Agassi and the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic and recalls his record-breaking seventh title victory against the Australian Pat Rafter in 2000. The Swiss sensation Roger Federer is the defending Wimbledon Champion and regarded by many as the heir to Pete Sampras' Wimbledon throne. Federer recalls his dramatic triumph over the seven-time champion in 2001.

Narrated by Geoffrey Palmer and written by Andrew Longmore, Wimbledon - The Record Breakers is a fascinating insight into the minds of some of Wimbledon's greatest champions as they recall their most famous record-breaking triumphs on the hallowed turf of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

This is an interesting review of some of the greatest tennis players who played at Wimbledon and who compiled great records. I would like more tennis and less talking.

4 out of 5 stars Wimbledon rocks.......2005-10-07

A good DVD for tennis buffs. Really about Becker, Navratilova and Sampras. It tells their Wimbledon stories, from beginnings to ends. It tells about their main rivalries, but the only interviews are from those 3 people. It would be nice to have Edberg talk about Boris, to have Chris Evert talk about Martina, and to have Agassi or anyone talk about Sampras. Bud Collins is a person that people either love or hate, but all respect his tennis knowledge, but he isn't on here either. Hard too to omit McEnroe, but this DVD does it. It tries to make a succession pathway from Navratilova to Hingis, but we know that didn't come about. The Navratilova bit is maybe 20 minutes, while the Hingis bit is about 2. Likewise, there was a great succession bit--mainly in interviews with Becker--about the King of Wimbledon going from Becker to Sampras and then to Federrer. At the end is a short piece on Federrer, akin to that of Hingis. Again, would like more interviews!!!

4 out of 5 stars Its not that good or bad.......2005-03-04

this is actually not bad cause it also shows in depth about the players although ankle breakers 1 had better players(steve nash, jason kidd, jason williams) its still pretty good it also has sweet crossovers with l.james and mellow when you see it, its actually not that bad after all!

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2005-02-23

I love watching someone get crossed up, but this video isn't really about that. I thought I was going to get a highlight reel of ankle breaking moves: what I got was a boring video. At least half of the video is a biography of the player they are going to highlight, w/ much if it just being praise from other players. No real meat. And hell, I know about these guys, if I wanted bios on them, that's what I would have bought.

The other half is about people getting beaten off the dribble, but rare are the footage of actual slick moves, and guys left stumbling or confused. Watching a player weave through defenders, is not breaking ankles. I wanted more shoots of moves like when Dwyane Wade crossed up Eric Snow so bad he fell down. I saw that game, and they included that highlight. Most of the rest was rather boring.

Stephon Marbury hosts this jammin', nearly one-hour celebration of the players, old school and new school, who broke the mold to create their own unique brand of razzle-dazzle basketball. The hip-hop soundtrack and stylistic manipulations are not necessary to create excitement. The thrilling NBA footage of stop-and-go's, crossovers, and ball fakes speaks for itself. DVD's freeze-frame and reverse capabilities only enhance the see-it-to-believe-it fancy footwork and breathtaking ball handling of basketball's true entertainers. Bob Cousy, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Allen Iverson, Steve Francis, Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, Jason Williams, and Tracy McGrady are just a few of the represented players who have turned the basketball court into their own personal stage. Colleagues, peers, and broadcasters offer testament to their play-making prowess, but these flamboyant, wild, and reckless players who found new ways to get the hoop demonstrate why they are human highlights films. --Donald Liebenson

I dont know how many people play basketball. Maybe a lot of the one who purchase these dvds cant even do a simple hesitation between the legs followed by a heads up. If you have handles and can play the game this one is a keeper. Although they could have added some of the other players who display the killa crossover..like my man killa kobe. But they do have A.I. and everbody in the league knows about his crossover. This dvds has a variety of nice moves along with some stuff that they could have edited out..for those of you that have seen this dvd then you know what i mean..So the next time you make a movie called ankile breakers..please only show moves that are breaking people ankles..I have seen plently of Iverson moves that has made some other NBA players fall..and dont forget about Stevie ....and the others who also have displayed some nice crossover as well...

3 out of 5 stars Defining "ankle breakers".......2006-07-06

I have not seen this video but to define the term "ankle breakers" is when the offensive player does an assortment of amazing moves that throws the defensive player out of sync that causes him to break his own ankles with out ever being touched by the offensive player. So, this video should be about offensive players who can throw the defence out of their way with grace and style and finish the play.

Again, I state that I have not seen this video. I put in a 3 star rating to be neutral as possible in the product rating system for it would not post this review otherwise.

    1 out of 5 stars ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz BORING.......2005-07-14

    This DVD is terrible.

Has anyone even heard the term ankle breakers before? I'm still not too sure what it is. I remember now why I stopped watching the NBA about ten years ago. This feature is presented by Steffon Marberry who has got to be the most boring, un-carismatic, yet, most egosticle S.O.B they could find. He is so boring talking for ages about how good he is and how he is the best player ever... yeah right, get over yourself STARberry pfft

The rest of the thing is filled with egotisticle players aswell. And a lot of boring interveiws. and stuff. It shows highlets of players who do have ball skill, but, tho I dont have that kind of talent, and I would have my butt kicked in a one on one match with any of them, it's still remains that it is so boring to watch 100 replys in a row of a crossover dribble into a boring little lay-up. ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

It's not entertaining, it put me off the NBA once again. Even the bonus features are dull and boring. The star plays or whatever it is started off ok, but then got boring... i couldnt finish watching this boring DVD filled with snore plays and a bunch of guys hogging the ball, showing how they have no skills when it comes to TEAM work and prove once and for all that they are about showing off and trying to make a name for themselves only.... yet, they never stop to think, "Why dont we ever win a game?" ITS BECAUSE YOU HOG THE BALL and this video just shows the highlights of it.

This DVD should be called Egos and Ball Hogs.

1 out of 5 stars no KOBE BRYANT.......2004-06-03

one reason why this dvd sucks no KOBE BRYANT. KOBE is one of the nba's greatest players. he's got one of the meanest crossover and dunks.

4 out of 5 stars Crossover historians will appreciate this.......2004-03-01

This is a great documentation of the greatest crossover artists in NBA history. crossover historians will appreciate an entire section in the special features section dedicated to no other than Mr. U.T.E.P. 2-step himself "Timbug" Tim Hardaway, which shows nothing but consecutive game clips of him performing the killer crossover on unsuspecting yokels. in the main movie, AI has his bit as well as steve francis, and thankfully they didn't forget jdub and his amazing ball handling skills. marbury has some footage but unfortunately no knicks clips. nevertheless, i was surprised how extensive this dvd is. not only does it include today's top crossover artists, it also has some footage of big men with handles, such as kg, duncan, and the unforgettable showcase in footwork
of hakeem olajuwon against david robinson in the western conf finals of 94. but that's not all! for some reason they decided to add extra clips in the special features section of nba high fliers
clyde drexler and ron harper during the 80s. they also have special sections on cousy, pete maravich, magic johnson, isiah thomas, and michael jordan, even though some of these players have nothing to do with the crossover. anyway, this dvd perhaps has too much footage, but it's good to see the nba didn't skimp on this dvd. i was very pleasantly surpised. a great capsule of yesterday's and today's greatest ankle shakers.
