I Have never felt better!.......2007-09-13
I am getting married in April and I wanted to really kick it in high gear! This DVD has been so great! The DVD is set up into three individualized circuits for the body. I usually do one or two circuits a day along with the "Total Body Toning Circuit" at the end. I have never felt so good while I was doing a workout! I smile the whole time and the instructor, Minna, gives great instructions! If you are looking for an excellent work out, this is one that truly delilvers!
Minna Lessig's DVD review.......2007-09-10
I enjoyed all aspects of this DVD. Minna explains simply how to properly do each exercise before beginning each set. Once you feel familiar, you can just do a few extra reps. I like the way it is broken down into short sections so you can do just what you can do each time. The music is fun and enjoyable. Minna is encouraging but not over the top. Fun and motivating.
Good Workout.......2007-08-28
Based on a recommendation in Shape magazine and the reviews online I decided to purchase this DVD. The workout targets all the rights areas, but be prepared to be sore the next day! The moves are not new moves but Minna adds a new flare to make them fun.
Tank Top Arms, Bikini Belly, Boy Shorts Bottom.......2007-08-25
I loved this product. All the exercises are great, but I wish it had more for belly.
Good video to target certain areas.......2007-08-19
I really like this video to target the arms, which gives different moves than previous DVDs and other DVDs to target the same area. She is motivating and energetic and that's why I like her so much as an at-home instructor!

Nice belly blaster.......2007-08-09
I like the shortness of this workout. There's 5 workouts, each 10 minutes long, with the warm up and cool down included, with a good workout in the middle. I've combined 2 of the workouts to do at a time. While I still don't have a belly like hers, I have noticed results in mine, and I like it!
Video and Shipment.......2007-08-09
The video is ok, I thought it would have more abs exercises on the ground. They shipped me the video twice and charged me twice.
This is a great workout dvd........2007-08-07
My daughter and I love this dvd. Suzanne Bowen is easy to follow and the exercises aren't too hard to do. The 5 different workouts give you variety and with each only 10 mins. long you can make it as challenging as you like by doing as many sessions as you like. We've only been doing it for a couple of weeks and I can already see results.
great video.......2007-08-01
I used to have the 8 minutes abs etc. type of tapes. This one is just the best out of all of them. Easy to follow, great choices. Just love it !!!
Excellent variety for more than just your abs.......2007-07-31
I picked this up in part because I wanted to take a look at the ten minute cardio segment, and in part because the instructor was featured in the Lotte Berk releases, and I wanted to see if she brought any of that here. Having done some of it, I think it's a great, varied program that can fit into a lot of people's schedules and, as a bonus, will work more than just your abs.
The first section doesn't include one single crunch but still has an athletic feel. This features pushups, front planks, forearm planks and side planks, with lifts for the hips (for side planks) or limbs (front planks). Of all of the sections, this was the one that felt the most Lotte Berk to me as she threw in some reminders about tucking the hips and pushing the weight back. I really liked this section, but then I like anything that doesn't require crunches. Seriously, I felt this entire segment through my back, arms and buttock as well as my abs.
The second section featured Pilates movements. I'm pretty sure that the instructor isn't a certified Pilates instructor, but she stuck to enough of the fundamentals to be respectable. This section included the Hundred, some of the Stomach Series, Roll Ups and a modified Teaser. Bonus: she also included some work for the back, noting that Pilates was not all about the abs.
The third section was the cardio segment I'd been curious about. On preview, she doesn't look like she's moving fast, and she does break several times to instruct, but it still gets the heart rate up. It felt like a hybrid of standing ab work and kick boxing, with an emphasis, obviously, on kicks and knee lifts. Here, too, she also included instructions for the tuck familiar to Lotte Berk practitioners.
The next section was pretty much classic, straight up, gym-style crunches. As I've said, these are my least favorite way of training my abs, but if that's what you're about, she packs most of the traditional variations in here: classic crunches, side crunches, crunches with one knee up, double crunches, etc.
The last section is a mix of the first and the fourth, with some of the planks and crunch variations. This would be a great way to get in some traditional as well as functional training for the abs.
Whatever your preference for training, this dvd should give you some enjoyable options.
Product Description
A bellydance drum solo is actually a duet: Together, a dancer and a drummer create a unique piece of performance art. For the dancer, the drum solo is a uniquely exciting experience demanding a profound understanding of rhythmic patterns and a wide vocabulary of bellydance moves and accents, all necessary to enable her to interact at will with the music created by the drummer.
RHYTHM WORKSHOP: Raquy breaks apart eight popular bellydance rhythms: baladi, saiidi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, malfouf, ayub, & semai. Acclaimed as a percussion performer, instructor and composer, Raquy teaches us how to recognize each rhythm. Then Jenna, a star dancer, instructor and choreographer, demonstrates effective dance combinations for each of the 8 rhythms. Accompanied by Raquy and Carmine, Jenna then also demonstrates the unique art of drum solo improvisation including the above rhythms.
CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: Jenna takes you step-by-step through THREE bellydance drum solo choreographies; beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each instructional session takes place before the mirror, enabling you to follow Jenna as if you were right behind her in the studio. On screen, a beat counter accompanies choreographic demostrations. Choreography breakdown sections separate each dance into numbered combinations, and provide titles naming each move. The "Learn and Practice" section offers a step by-step breakdown of each combination and a presentation of the choreography "from the top" with practice repetitions inserted, so you can follow Jenna and learn the steps in real time.
The DVD also contains a warmup sequence recommended before learning or practicing, and Jenna's famous Shimmy Drills: the Shimmy Layering Drill, and her 3/4 Shimmy Drill. The drills are fun mini-exercise routines to help you learn and build on the art of the shimmy, one of the most colorful and vibrant bellydance moves.
Customer Reviews:
easy learning.......2007-09-13
Very well performed, easy to follow each move. all three routines fun and very graceful.would like to purchase the drum solo music to go with it.
very good...but poor video quality and editing........2007-09-06
This is my first dvd on belly dancing, so its a bit hard to say just how good it really is...but i was pretty satisfied. Jenna does a good job in explaining certain moves, now its a matter of practice on my side to perfection the shimmy. I liked the warm up alot , it loosened up my hips and shoulders in preparation for other practices. I found the section that teaches drum rythms to be very insightful. I was pleasently surprised that i began to sweat in the section of shimmy drills.!!! Wow...its not easy. But i had a real problem with the quality of the video and in some parts the editing is poorly done. I dont know much about belly dancing but i feel this dvd probably doesnt cover enough...so ill have to buy several others and see if there are other moves or techniques to learn. I've realized though, with drum solos, its not easy to try and do a choreography that jenna teaches. because i tend to move to the drum in my own ways so...that is a bit challenging.
Drum Solo Rhythmes.......2007-05-23
For explaining the different rhythmes: baladi, saïdi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, malfouf, ayub and semaï, this DVD gets 5 stars.
Great DVD!!.......2007-03-25
This was a great learning tool in understanding the different rhythms. Jenna's drum solos were awesome!
Heartbeat of Bellydance.......2007-03-08
excellent - excellent combinations of things that are possible to follow and to learn to execute. she gives good guidelines and is very talented - I've learned a lot.

Footnotes in movie books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of Titanic. As such it automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leo's young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibson's Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote and directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, Gérard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining movie, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired. --Jeff Shannon

The Man in the Iron Mask.......2007-07-20
This was a very good movie with an all star cast. It is well worth watching again and again.
Love it.......2007-06-24
Kinda historical, more for eye candy and a rush. Overall, a really cool movie. If you like Count of Monte Crisco you will love this.
Rather enjoyable movie.......2007-06-15
I've enjoyed this movie several times and know that it is a family hit. It shows the contrast of good and bad decisions and how they can effect an entire kingdom. The honor and loyalty of the royal guard to the people in conflict to their responsibility to their king.
I thought the acting was very good and convincing as well as the scenery and the storyline was good. It had my interest and I was left satisfied with no real unanswered questions at the end.
I would recommend watching this movie, and even adding it to your library.
"One For All, and All For One!".......2007-04-25
This is a magnificent movie and would be a great addition to anyones' collection. The actors do an amazing job portraying the musketeers in this version of the Man in the Iron Mask. The sounds and scenery add to the wonderful ambiance created in this film. I have owned it since it came out and still enjoy watching it every time. It has one of the greatest endings of any movie I have seen, every director should strive to have an ending like this.
I guess all I can say is, if you don't at least see this movie you're missing out.
bad acting, bad script, terrible movie.......2007-04-18
This is an unsophisticated, badly written, terribly acted movie that just doesn't work. I can't imagine what the reviewers who like it were thinking. DiCaprio is ghastly. None of the actors can read any of the lines convincingly. The damsel in distress has the most childish, silly voice.... Awful movie.

And, beyond all these benefits, it offers a fantastic motivation to stay beautiful and graceful throughout the pregnancy - in touch with your inner goddess!
Customer Reviews:
Gets you moving... Fun Workout.......2007-06-27
I really enjoy doing the belly dance moves, they are fun and exotic. I tried yoga but found myself falling asleep during the floor workouts. Belly dance moves have a way of helping my tired pregnant body feel better and it's uplifting.
Gentle dance workout appropriate for many body types.......2007-06-14
I've been using the "prenatal bellydance" DVD sold on Amazon through the middle of my first pregnancy. Amazon mislabeled it; the DVD cover actually says "Bellydance prenatal fitness and dance instruction program" starring Naia.
This has become my favorite intermediate exercise right now. It definitely beats the repetitive aerobics and dumbed down yoga I've encountered otherwise. If you are bored by aerobic routines and want to enjoy the _act_ of exercising as much as the _results_ of exercising during pregnancy, bellydance is probably the ideal activity. It's gentle on my (increasingly) flexible joints, and it keeps my focus on how my body is feeling.
The DVD makes some minimal mention of which moves are apt to speed progress when actually laboring. No shimmying is included! She suggests that you substitute standing for lunges if you're having balance issues, and includes a few positional instructions for avoiding injury: keeping your weight on the balls of your feet and finding a neutral pelvis.
I get the sense that the negative reviewers expected to master the bellydance routines by viewing this only a few times, but I think that's an unreasonable approach to a traditional dance form shared between families and friends and performed by women of varying skills and fitness levels--and possibly inspired by labor (see anthropologist Sheila Kitzinger)! The point is not to execute perfectly weaving snake arms but to stay in tune with natural movements that make you feel good. In this sense bellydance resembles African dance more than ballet--two styles I've taken intermediate instruction in.
The music-without-narration feature is useful, and my only complaint is that the DVD could have included more improvisatory accents, background, and drumming rhythms. As it is, I think the beginner may pause several times at first to replay steps, but the experienced dancer who's probably concentrating more on the expressiveness of her form and the music is also pretty well served by the approachable routine.
I'm looking forward to working the hip circling into my labor!
You Don't Have to Be Pregnant to Benefit.......2007-05-10
You don't have to be pregnant to get tremendous benefit from the instruction on this DVD; if you're someone who needs gentle exercise but hates to "exercise," this is a great one to have in your DVD collection, because even though you get the advantages of exercise, such as relaxation, stress relief, and over time, body toning, you will feel as though you're dancing from the start. Starting with 4 warm-ups that have movements that prepare you and become the basis for a short dance combination, the choreography is so expertly done that you can feel the release of tension immediately. By the time you've done the final "Cool Down," you'll be refreshed and invigorated. For those that want an easier option on some of the movements, there is an insert that comes on the screen with Naia demonstrating a simpler move.
Naia, at 7 months pregnant, is so incredibly beautiful and graceful, she's an inspiration to those who are pregnant, and who may feel out of sorts and even have a touch of the "uglies." That applies also to those who may not be expecting, but maybe have a couple of unwanted pounds on their hips to lose! Naia demonstrates the moves with clarity, and her narration, with a lovely soft voice, is instructive and a pleasure to listen to. Once you have the movements learned, you also have the option to play this DVD without the narration, just with music, which is by bellydance expert, dancer and composer Jihan, and very pleasing. Neon, the Russian born beauty who is a dazzling dancer and teacher, did the choreography, and it is perfect for anyone who wants not only prenatal fitness, but stress release after a hard day of work, or gentle exercise if you're out of shape or one of the "over 50" crowd. You'll feel like you had a trip to the oasis after this session with Naia!
Very good.......2007-04-07
I loved this video. It was very good for me to practise it in my house and to share it with my friends in class. I will let it to my teacher.
Hey, it's a fun workout...give it a chance...!.......2007-04-03
OK, it's true that this workout isn't the most newbie-friendly--Naia does only a so-so job of actually breaking down and teaching the steps and movements, and cueing, especially in the last segment.
But I don't think this means it's a bad workout. I've bought bad DVD workouts (including Middle Eastern dance workouts) and this isn't one of them!
I'm of the school of thought that if I master the workout on the first go, it's not going to hold my interest. I can handle having some workouts that I miss a few counts...so what? I suppose if you're the personality that gives up if you don't get the steps and/ or movements right the first or second time, this workout isn't for you.
I disagree it's not "beginner"-level, although if you're looking for an introduction to Middle Eastern dance, I'd recommend other workouts. Naia could do a better job breaking down the steps and making the counts and cueing simplier.
Also, I feel that for the money, it would be nice to have more features for the DVD. I like the "music only" feature, but besides that, there's not much. For the money I'd like more than one 30 minute workout, for one. Or a segment going into detail the various movements (always a good idea!) or SOMETHING MORE.
I actually DO like this workout. It makes me feel looser, less cranky, and one of the few workouts that I feel graceful doing as I go into my 3rd trimester. I think it's worthwhile having in your pregnancy workout, even if there are some flaws. Give it a chance; not every workout is nailed the first go-round, and learning is a good thing!

Customer Reviews:
I very much agree with other viewer........2007-08-23
I have looked a couple reviews all the reviewers have commented but yes, this DVD is very decent. I very much agree with other viewers comment and this one will be good one to have as your work out and learning your belly moves :-)
The Best Beginner's DVD.......2007-07-27
I am a total novice, and Amira's Belly Dance 101 DVD is the only one I've been able to do without frustration and pain.
Now I am a total couch potato, but I have always wanted to learn to belly dance. I saw that this DVD got great reviews, so I bought it.
Well, I also ended up buying a couple of others that were supposed to be good for beginners -- not! Maybe beginners who are fit to begin with, or who already know the proper belly dance posture and warmup routines. But Amira's DVD -- this I could do.
The DVD covers: proper posture, warmup routine, isolations for: head, shoulder, torso and hips. Shimmies are also included -- shoulder and hip. And something I've always wanted to do -- snake arms!
Amira is also great because she looks like a normal person -- not someone so skinny that you see their hipbones jutting out. And it doesn't hurt that Amira's quite pretty.
One other thing Amira does that I truely appreciated -- she mentions a few times to try your best *but* respect your body's limitations as well. She doesn't come across as being a drill seargent, but rather radiates a gentle encouragement.
If I had one wish, I would have liked to see a little bit about hand movements. Amira covers arm movements, but not the hands.
This is one DVD that deserves more than 5 stars!
Instruction.......2007-06-23
This DVD is definitely for begginers belly dancers. Amira does a great job at demonstrating the basic moves and keeps each segment long enough for you to get the idea and practice but not so long you get bored or tired of it. She explains and talks through each move to ensure you understand the movement or isolation and I enjoy the music in the background. There is a nice combination at the end that is easy to follow and fun to do. I can tell there is a underlying hint to yoga practice in her style of teaching and I do not mind it since I do yoga to. Amira has a pleasent voice which makes it pleasent to follow her instructions. However, I found the segments to be very basic and the overall lenght of the instructional piece to short. I would have like to see other isolations or moves in the DVD. I use this DVD when I do not have a whole lot of time and do not want to miss a day of practice. Amira included a performance at the end of the DVD but even though I think she is very skillfull and a great instructor her performance was disappointing and did not impress me it lacked vibrance. Overall, great instructional DVD and I highly reccomended for begginers only.
best belly dance instructional video!!.......2007-06-10
I have purchased other instructional belly dance videos and had a hard time seeing the dancers movements. This video has multiple camera angels so you miss nothing! Plus the music makes you want to shimmy. I also am a big fan of Amira. I have been to one of her workshops and she is just as amazing in person as on the video.
Beginner or advanced this will improve your technique.
Great for Learning and Drilling Basics!.......2007-06-02
Amira is an excellent teacher! She really knows how to break down the basic moves for beginners and remind more advanced dancers of proper technique. I think EVERYONE should include drilling the basics into their bellydance practice and this DVD really helps with that.... I look forward to her next project!
Customer Reviews:
Too short. Not much dancing done. :-(.......2007-08-05
I was expecting to do more dancing as an exercise, instead I was doing sit ups and stretches. I'm a little dissapointed. I wanted to shake my hips more! :-) It's also only 31 minutes. I wanted to sweat more!!!
PLEASE DON'T!.......2007-07-17
I ORDERED THIS DVD,THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE A GOOD WORK OUT.NO SUCH THING,FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN SOMEONE WHO HAVE FLAT ABS,2nd.SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT MAYBE WE ALL CAN NOT WORK
OUT AT THE SAME SPEED.
Super workout.......2007-07-16
I have a lot of fun by doing this exercises, it's easy but still efficient. I only can recommend it.
Hips, buns and thighs.......2007-06-30
That's the worst DVD I've ever got, it's nothing but a waste of money. Well, It's very easy for beginners, but if you are a beginner, why don't you get "bellydance basics and beyond" or "bellydance for romance" or anything for Neon. They contain much more and will teach you much more. That DVD is not recommended for any belly dancing student.
Workout.......2007-05-25
This is a great beginners DVD. At first you don't think you will get a work out, but let me tell ya...you do! I will definately buy another Bidasha video.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and enjoyable workout.......2007-09-01
This is a fun workout. I like to incorporate as much cardio into my workout routine as I can and I get both cardio and toning with this one. I thought the moves and the instructor were fun. I workout everyday and I would consider myself an intermediate/advanced level. The cardio was not overly challenging, but it is a nice option for days when I feel like I would like something lighter. That is not to say I don't feel like I worked out, because let me tell you, I do feel the burn in [...]. That being said, I would really recommend this being added to any fitness dvd collection. It is great for beginners just getting started and a nice option for those more experienced who are looking for something that will give them a good workout that is fun!
Decent workout but seems incomplete.......2007-08-28
I have mixed feelings about this video. It's a cardio/toning interval workout that's kind of fun to do and relatively effective with its series of squats, lunges and a lot of higher impact moves, but everything about it seemed mis-matched to me - notably the instructor, who seemed to lack a certain authenticity as if she's really a cheerleader putting on a 'tough act', the music which I happen to really like but it would've worked far better in a dance-style workout, all of the mis-matched attire of the background exercisers, and the totally over-done hootin' and hollerin' throughout. Also, when I think of a "Bootcamp" style workout I would expect something more challenging than this that also uses weights, which this does not. In fact at roughly 40 minutes, I don't see why they couldn't have just added on another ten minutes or so to target the arms more and make it a true total-body workout. This is the main reason why I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars. It's not bad, but I'd recommend the much better "Crunch: Boot Camp Training" over this which serves up a lot more in a shorter amount of time, or even Denise Austin's new "Boot Camp Body Blast" DVD instead. Either one of those are more challenging than this DVD and work the entire body with weights.
Rating: Fair
I really like this workout :->.......2007-08-23
I really like Crunch workouts and this one is another great one from them. This is easy to follow and it's only 40 minutes all up so it won't be long before you're done with a great workout that is fun to do and helps you tone up.
It's made up of aerobic/toning intervals and they go in easy stages and progress to harder variations. There aren't any ultra dancy moves so if you aren't co-ordinated you'll get this down. All the moves (aerobic and toning) are done with a base move that you can stay with or move with the transitions into more intense moves. I like this because you can get a more effective workout, or back down if you are working too hard. The instructor, Teri, is outgoing and encouraging and the entire dvd is a lot of fun. This is probably more geared for beginner to intermediate, but even if you are already quite fit, you'll still enjoy this a lot. I do.

Great!.......2007-07-17
This is one of the best beginner exercise videos I have ever tried. It is low impact and starts out slow. I love it!
Like a jump'n'run game.......2007-07-16
This DVD is quite exhausting, but still a lot of fun. But I can't recommend it for people which have problems with their feet, because you have to do a lot of jumping. :-)
excellent for beginners.......2007-06-09
i have thoroughly enjoyed this workout. i am a large woman and it was fun, but demanding. the first section (30 minutes) works shoulders and tummy areas. it was fantastic fun. i would recommend it, and i will purchase the next dvd from this duo.
FOR BASIC BEGINNERS (skip this dvd if you've had any bellydance experience).......2007-03-14
In reference to the "Basic Moves" portion...
This is a half hour dance *instruction* video. Some moves may tire out your shoulders and hips, but it isn't much of a "workout," and definitely not cardio or strenuous.
~10min of head/neck & shoulder/arm movements .
~10min of rib/hip movements. ~5min of basic steps.
~5min of floor moves (Cleopatra/outer thigh lift, cat, leg stretch)
They introduce individual isolated moves, and repeat them several times for users to practice; most moves were easy to pick up (but will take time & practice to make it look graceful). I don't know if it's the instructors or if it's because they are demonstrated isolated motions, but they look a bit robotic/jerky. This seems is an Intro to belly dance for total beginners.
I think people with previous belly dance experience will find this basic video too slow/boring and stiff.
I would much rather RECOMMEND "BELLYDANCE BASICS AND BEYOND: Technique for a Solid Foundation" BY JENNA, which is a 2.5hr DVD with much better technique and practice options; it provides a teaching portion of all the major belly dance moves, as well as a drill/practice section.
Fantastic.......2007-03-11
Thanks to other reviews, I bought this DVD. Perfect choice for beginners! I also started a belly dancing class and this is MUCH easier to follow. I love how it teaches the basic moves and then moves you into a work out. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking of trying this type of workout. Its fun, sexy and although you get some good burning going, easy to do!

1 star for DMX .......2007-07-13
Before viewing this film, I did take into consideration that it was a hip/hop film; hot hip/hop artists at their prime, a notorious music video director and a very upbeat and urban soundtrack to boot did sound pretty promising. However, the film's lackluster script, extremely corny dialogue, over the top editing, and poor narrative by Nas was almost unbearable if not stomach-turning. The only acting that seemed plausible was DMX, (Thats not really saying that much). Instead of releasing this movie theatrically, it easily could of been a 93 minute music video on Mtv. On a positive note, I appreciated the vibrant colors and newly remastered dvd transfer; it incorporated bright greens, saturated blue's and washed out reds. (Jamaica scenes manifest this description the best) the editing coincided well with the soundtrack for the first 20 minutes but quickly deteriorated along with the horrific acting. I wanted to see an actual film, not a eternal music video. I understand Hype Williams wanted to incorporate his music editing elements to the table; however, it suffered in the long run. Now to the acting, Nas as a lead role was hurtful and corny to watch on screen. its not like These hip/hop artists are being asked to portray complex characters, more or less themselves. Nas's poor narration just barely ties the rapid paced and unrelated scenes. Dmx, on the other hand, was the only actor who seemed like maybe he actually did some auditioning before the film; Dmx's deep scratchy voice is powerful and coincides well with his volatile demeanor as well as profession. As far as the incomprehensible-gibberish speaking Jamaican drug lords go, I think Al Pacino did it best with his Cuban accent. Enough said. For hip/hop aficionado's or fans of any of these artists should view this film, however, it should be taken with a grain of salt. But then again, seeing these other 5 star amazon reviews makes me have second thoughts about other people's tastes..
My Boyfriend Loved It!.......2007-02-19
I was so happy to find this for my boyfriend, I had shopped at several local video stores on search of this DVD, which is my boyfriends favorite movie. It was delivered quickly at a great price and we are very happy.
But Why is it Called Belly?.......2006-11-26
The American Dream is an appealing myth, no doubt. The idea that anybody can come from anywhere and strike it rich in America sounds great. The problem, as George Carlin put it, is that you have to be asleep to believe in it. So instead of representing opportunity for everybody it has become code for greed at all costs. And that is where "Belly" comes in, an ode to thug live and all the riches that come with it. This urban drama stars DMX (perpetually rapping), Nas, and Method Man and they would have you believe that they earned their cash by selling drugs and pimping as opposed to selling out to record companies. The story barely exists and seemed like a burden for the director who just wanted endless shots of people having sex and smoking drugs. When the plot does poke its head up I picked up on a criminal enterprise that moved shop from Queens to Omaha. Once there the cops get involved and people start getting shot. One couple tries to escape to Africa, but find it easier said than done. And Tommy (DMX) is sent on a mission to kill a minister. But really this film is about selling a lifestyle that doesn't even exist. Come on now, I've known drug dealers in my day, and they didn't live in large gaudy mansions . . . rap stars do. Rather they live in shacks or their parent's basement.
If my response to the film seems lukewarm it is because it is. The directing by Hype Williams isn't that bad. He is able to capture some beautiful images and uses a few creative camera tricks. The lighting never seems quite right, but I'm gonna let that one slide. As a man who has always called for more sex and drugs in films I can hardly complain about their presence here. There people are living life to the fullest and are certainly not being weighed down by bourgeois conventions. All that said this film still fully deserves the big no vote that I am going to give it. As the most nihilistic person I know I am surprised to report that this one really seemed lost. Any image they could flash on the screen that would appeal to the wannabes in the audience was used. The N and F words are used to comedic proportions. Their palaces that represent their gluttony are turned into war zones and destroyed for no good reason. And then, on top of it all, we have to listen to the characters wax philosophical on how leading this life somehow places them on a higher plain than the rest of us. Sorry man, but just because you sell drugs instead of stocks doesn't make you any less slimy than those Wall Street hacks. You're still a businessman. This film is not worth watching. Any social point that is made is made accidentally, and any filmmaking skills the director may have are lost under his love fest for all things gangsta. **1/4
Depictive of life in the Ghetto.......2006-08-10
This movie was great due to the fact that it shows what life really is like in the so-called "Ghetto". It shows the endless crime and reality of the New York Streets. Even though its a fictional work, it depicts fact. Places like East New York Brooklyn, and the South Bronx are constant reminders of the Urban War in the streets--and this movie would be a good portrayel of the "hood life". I recommend this movie to all who want to know what ghetto life is like...check it out.
A gun shot in the Belly........2006-06-02
Hype Williams is the greatest music video director of all time.
This, however, does not automatically mean the transition to film is going to be a good one.
The movie is not good. I don't know if it's supposed to be a black Scarface or what, but it's really bad.
Rappers are not known for their Oscar-worthy work, and Nas and DMX are no exception. DMX has charisma, but he needs to work on remembering he's reciting lines, not rapping.
I love T-boz, but she needs to stick to her day job.
Taral Hicks is a good actress, but her talents are wasted here. I don't buy her as a bad girl.
I know The Godfather was an inspiration for Hype, but his attempt to give the movie a dark tint backfired. He made it too dark. Everytime I see the movie, I mistakenly think I'm looking at a bootleg or something.
Hype should start over in film by directing material written by someone else.
