The inspired pairing of Jackie Chan and British comedian Lee Evans (Funny Bones) gives The Medallion some extra oomph. Hong Kong agent Eddie Yang (Chan) flies to Ireland to track down a very bad guy named Snakehead (Julian Sands, Warlock, exuding his dependable oily menace) who has kidnapped a young boy with the power of life and death. When Eddie dies protecting the boy, the boy resurrects him with a magical medallion--and when Eddie comes back, he's got supernatural powers, much to the befuddlement of his former partner, Arthur (Evans). Along for the ride is Eddie's old flame, Nicole (Claire Forlani, Mystery Men), wearing tight outfits and delivering high kicks. Chan has lost the astonishing elasticity of his youth, but he's still spry enough pull some dazzling moves, and Evans is just amazingly funny. Between the two, The Medallion is far more entertaining than you might expect. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars possibly the worst jackie chan film ever.......2007-08-20

Before I began to bash this film, its not because it is just a gosh awful film, but in comparison to most Chan films this is possibly his weakest entry. Sure, he is getting a little older these days, but he can still put out films like New Police Story, I just don't understand. If he was aiming for a kids movie with Medallion, then he has succeeded. And if there was anything I did enjoy most from this film, it didn't necassarily come from Chan himself.

Bascially, this really did seem like something made for kids. The idea of The Medallion did not appeal to me at all, and seemed rather corny and cheesy. It is about a young boy who holds the power of life and death in a medallion, which he is the chosen protector of. There wasn't much exploration throughout the film about the medallion. We get to see it used twice, bringing the Chan character back to life early on and again briefly for the villain. Other than that, this is basically a back and forth chase movie, as bad guys and good guys try to claim the boy and medallion.

Most Chan movies have lots of chases - by foot, bicycle, car and who knows what. In Medallion, the action sequences and chases are kind of boring for a Chan film. Lots of wirework and digital graphics are used, which means hardly any real stunts from Jackie. There is a foot chase early on that lasts for several minutes where Chan walks across a row of bicycles and does some other nice things, but thats about it. As far as fights go, I was also dissapointed. Chan fights the bad guy (Jullian Sands) twice, but both scenes are laughably bad. There was no skill involved, as everyhting was digital and bad camera work.

In addition to a weak story, the characters were quite uninteresting and there was little development between them. The humor you expect from Chan films is a different kind of humor, provided mostly by the Lee Evans character, who is Chan's partner. For awhile I thought his humor was kind of stupid, but eventually it should give some laughs, and ends up being about the only enjoybale thing out of this film.

Don't expect anything serious, anything great, or any teriffic action. This is a lousy film that is worth watching once and probably it. I definetly see this designed more for kids. It was just too cheesy and poor for my taste. Jackie Chan fans will most likely be dissapointed.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculously bad.......2007-08-15

I really like most Jackie Chan movies, but nothing could redeem this stinker. The less said about the plot, the better. The dialogue was awful. And the action scenes aren't even very good. The most enjoyment I got out of this movie was sitting around afterwards drinking to forget and hoping that in our drunken stupors, the movie would magically make sense and be entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies ever.......2007-03-22

this movie was horrible I just watched it and it felt like forever. the comedy in the movie sucked there were ONLY 3 scenes that were actually funny and they were with Lee Evans, Jackie was just not his old self in this movie he is either getting old or not in shape, and Claire forlani's acting was horrible big time the movie could have been way better with out her.

I also did not like that most of jackie's stunts were done with wires. the story line was ok but it needed some real comedy, i was bored through most of the movie and I hope jackie's talent doesn't go to waste and he starts acting in better movies.

3 out of 5 stars Jackie Chan and Gordon Chan just didn't mix well.......2007-01-15

While Gordon Chan is not one of the elite directors in Hong Kong, he has big ideas that work sometimes but others just fail miserably. It is too bad that Jackie had to be part of this movie. The story is about Jackie trying to save some kid. It felt a lot like Eddie Murphy's 'Golden Child' and I think they actually call the kid the golden child in this movie. So basically they didn't seem to have a story for this and wrote it as they went along like most Hong Kong movies. Except this is an American movie, or I guess I will say that it is an English speaking movie. Jackie saves the kid and dies. Don't worry, he comes back to life by the golden child and because of this medallion. Now while the action wasn't great it wasn't too bad. There were a couple of brief fights that were good but once Jackie is brought back to life he is superhuman and the action just looks ridiculous form there on. Before he dies and has normal fights the action is the best but the wirework still bugs the crap out of me. When somebody gets hit with an uppercut, do they really need to be lifted off of their feet? The wirework makes people look like Spiderman most of the time. It just doesn't work.

I wish I could say the action was the only thing I had a little bit of a problem with. The acting is very bad and the comedy only works a few times. The movie is nice to look at but it is very doubtful you will ever watch this again. I would be going on for many pages if I named all that is wrong with this movie. Then again, it could have just been the outtakes Jackie does at the end of every movie that made me think that I actually enjoyed this somewhat.

Now you are probably saying-Morgoth, you just gave a review for a 1 star movie! Why did you rate it a 3?!?!?!? Well, I will tell you. Like I said, Jackie looks great. The action is done by his big brother Sammo Hung. While the movie around Jackie is amazingly bad, he is still very good in it. Now that only explains why I would give it a 2. The 3rd star goes to Christy Chung. While her part in the movie was WAAAYYYYY too brief, she is the most amazing woman I have ever set my eyes on and she kick some serious butt! So she slightly pushes this to a 3. Any movie with Lily-Li, Brigitte Lin, or Christy Chung makes it a must have for me.

The DVD is nicely presented. Executive producer and editor commentary. They mainly just talk about how great the movie is and they are glad it turned out so well. I guess I just didn't see that. There are also many deleted scenes that are just as good as he actual movie from what I can tell. Always nice to see the action scenes they threw out.

2 out of 5 stars Not very memorable.......2006-12-22

I love Jackie Chan and all of his movies, buy I will admit this is not one of his best. It's quite bad actually, I bought it cos it was cheap and I like to own all of Jackie's movies in my collection. Not even Claire Forlani could really save this one, she looks totally out of place in this movie. I only recommend it to serious Jackie fans, I couldn't imagine anyone else getting through the whole 85 minutes.

After 15 years of hit movies for Universal Studios, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello left the studio in the twilight of their partnership with the last of their monster comedies. Decked out in desert safari gear, the boys go looking for a job with an Egyptologist and wind up in the middle of a conspiracy concerning the murdered professor, an ancient mummy, and a magical medallion that, true to form, bumbling Costello manages to eat for dinner. Marie Windsor, the boss lady of a gang of treasure hunting crooks, dresses in a harem outfit to vamp for our chubby little hero, and the eternally stiff Richard Deacon hilariously plays the leader of an Egyptian mummy cult like a high school principal decked out for Halloween. Directed by longtime collaborator Charles Lamont, it's a typical Abbott and Costello farce with disappearing corpses, mistaken identities, and wacky word plays ("Take your pick" riffs on "Who's on first" with garden tools). While not as clever or spirited as their original monster mash Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, the vaudeville veterans are still masters of the double take and fast-talk patter, and the picture climaxes with a screwball chase that involves not one, not two, but three mummies skittering through the phoniest looking pyramid this side of community theater. You were expecting realism? The boys appeared together once more on film, in Dance with Me, Henry, and then split up. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Spooky in a Scooby way..........2007-07-09

I bought these to introduce my daughter to slapstick comedy. No one does it better than Abbott & Costello. These movies were always on in my grandmother's house, and they still crack me up. The first time we watched them, my daughter was a little frightened until I explained that they were just people dressed up and pretending to be scary and now she loves them! I plan to start a new Halloween tradition to watch them each year (with popcorn of course) with our family after trick or treating :)

Well, theres not much you can say about it. Its a great item to have if you are a collectior like me me, but no, it was not one of Abbot and Costellos greatest films. You dont see a lot of the Mummy untill like an hour into the film. And then from then on out everything just goes topsy turvy.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it. .......2007-05-28

"Flesh for the Beast" was good. It was as good as it was going to be, anyway. There was alot of hip special effects, nudity, and gore: it's a cheese-ball, low-budget horror movie. If you don't like cheese-ball, low-budget horror movies then don't watch this one, because you're not going to like it. Stick with the "provocative thrillers" that Hollywood is pumping out by the butt-load.

If you like Fulci's films-specifically his later stuff (i.e., "House of Clocks", "Cat in the Brain", "Demonia")-you'll like "Flesh for the Beast."

If not, I'm sure M. Night's got a new one coming out soon.

5 out of 5 stars oh my god wonderful.......2007-05-27

Look, we've got a lot(I mean A LOT) of nudity and sex, we've got some gore, we've got some cheesy freak-out effects, we've got the usual scares in a dark house repertoire, and we've got Buckethead doing the soundtrack.

How can you NOT love that? I mean, BUCKETHEAD. NUDITY. CLICHE. EXTRAVAGANZA. Buy this movie immediately.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the horror behind the house even has a good ol' fashion down-south New Orleans back story to it!

This is the sort of film that, if Hollywood put a lot of money into it, it would be boring and trite and unwatchable. But since there wasn't these awful dollars put into it they had to make do with trite, cliche, and ridiculous and it's GOLDEN.

And hey, if you don't mind losing about four minutes of lesbian revellry(and if you don't mind that, well you're probably not going to like this movie) you can pick it up in its R-Rated form in the Wicked Women three pack along with a couple of movies that don't quite meet up to the beauty of this film, but they are pretty close!

2 out of 5 stars HAHAHA.......2007-04-22

And I'm still laughing. This movie is really horrible. Is it supposed to be horror or soft core porn? I'm not sure which but either way it has the plot for both. I bought this movie years ago and decided to watch it tonight because I really have no life. The only thing good about this movie is Buckethead's music and that is the only reason I bought it in the 1st place.
If you like cheesy horror with nakie girls and awesome music then you might like this.

1 out of 5 stars Oh come on!!!.......2006-03-04

Why do people automatically call crapfests like this "only for true horror fans" and such drivel. I've been a horror fan for years and years and know when a low budget movie is good and when one is crap. This...is CRAP! All us REAL horror fans rue the day they made digital camcorders and neato graphic art programs so easy to use and affordable, because now we have too many self proclaimed film makers crapping up the video stores. My children make better stories up with their homemade sock puppets. Stop luring us in with cool cover art, nifty taglines, then torturing us with stinko productions!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Redefines "bad".......2005-11-26

This is crap. They had a great mansion to shoot in (the film's only asset), but what happens inside is very stupid. There's no tension, no scares, just a lot of blood, guts (not that well done I might add) and a lot of sex scenes where men copulate with their pants on. The acting's sucky, the direction non-existent. There's little else to say about it. Stay away from it if you don't want your intelligence insulted.

4 out of 5 stars Marco Polo Jr's long journey.......2007-08-03

This film was originally made in 1972 by Eric Porter Productions in Australia, as that country's first animated feature film. It was a 50-50 co-production deal between Porter and American artist and script-writer Sheldon Moldoff.
As one of the unit directors on the film, I thoroughly enjoyed working on it and, for its budget of maybe one-eighth of a contemporary Disney animated feature, I felt that it stood up pretty well.
But I always thought that it would benefit from a bit of tightening up, and so was interested when Ron Merk contacted me a few years ago with the news that he and Moldoff were going to rework the film.
In general, I think they have done a good job, although the climactic battle between Marco and the evil villain is not as good as I was hoping it would be. Nevertheless, I give it four stars - so go ahead and buy it, it's good fun!

2 out of 5 stars The story continues..........2007-09-08

The story continues, but Joey Wong plays a different character. Somehow she was reincarnated and this is the main problem with the movie for me. I wanted to see Joey Wong and Leslie Cheung continue their relationship, but instead Leslie Cheung comes to the realization that she is not the ghost he fell in love with in the first movie. Joey Wong plays a mortal and she and others are trying to rescue Ku feng from being executed. The cast is a lot stronger than the first movie but the story just isn't as good.

    2.5/5

    4 out of 5 stars rollicking fun.......2006-04-19

this is the first film i saw of the trilogy and it remains my my favorite of the three - but not by much

the script is a laugh a minute - the action plentiful - with great atmosphere - effective dramatic moments - enjoyable mugging actors - and the alluring joey wong

no wonder ive seen all three films more than once

the flaws of the film include the primitiveness of the monsters - and - worst of all - the use of 'abrcadabra' etc for the mystical spells - but - for most viewers - the films virtues should overwhelm those flaws

4 out of 5 stars Watch the first one before this one (second one).......2005-11-06

This movie is fun! I did see it originally without any subtitles, so i did hear the differences in the spells that are shouted. I do not read nor write nor speak Chinese, however, I found that this triology is understandable and quite enjoyable without subtitles whatsoever.

Yes, it is a low budget film especially when you compare it to the horrendous budgets of Star Wars, etc. but for all that, that is why it is SOOOO MUCH FUN!!! it is hilarious! The innocence of the male lead the beauty of the two female leads! The clever intricate twists of the movie plots and characters. The symbolic wishes to do "good", the wonderful play on how degenerate power religion and mindless following can be. The wonderful type of "godzilla" like (from the 1960's) rubber monster! running around! come on folks! it's a COMEDY!!! It's a load of fun, a bit more disjointed than the other two movies, but, still fun.

The English subtitles! are wonderfully funny! I recommend trying to watch it without any subtitles at all! then you can see how it was originally meant to be seen, and you would be surprised at how FUN you will find the movie! Then watch it with the subtitles! and see how "off" you might be on guessing the story, I bet you that won't be far off! make up the spells in your mind! The translator didn't know other English type of spells so stuck with Hocus-pocus etc. but, you can make up your own. (or read Harry Potter-if you lack the imagination!)

Rent the movie first, and then if you are like me, you'll want to own it in your collection and to share with your friends and family. [...]. I won't tell you the plot, it is better NOT to KNOW anything, I really wish people would not put so many plot details in their reviews, this movie is refreshing! and it's better to come upon the twists and turns without knowing what's around the bend! SOOO....when you are discussing the movie(s) with your friends, do NOT tell them all the stuff, no details! much more fun!

5 out of 5 stars For all its wackiness, Chinese Ghost Story is serious stuff........2004-03-22

I don't remember why I decided to rent Chinese Ghost Story 2. It's probably because it's one of the best examples of a martial arts historical fantasy, and I use the word "historical" loosely.

It's hard to sum up the plot because it's a blending mishmash of several other plots. There's the reincarnated former long lost love, the bumbling tax collector, the clueless demon fighter, the grouchy monk, and a whole slew of bandits who dress up as ghosts.

But it wouldn't be called Chinese Ghost Story 2 if it was only about fake ghosts. There are real ghosts too - one is a hilarious big floppy monster with big fangs, big eyes, and big claws. The other is the main bad guy, who doesn't actually appear until the second half of the movie. And what a bad guy he is - a demon in the form of a false Buddha in the form of a giant centipede.

Get the picture yet? How about a freeze spell gone wrong, a guardian warrior who wields five katanas at once, and people flying around on swords like they were surfboards. The most hysterical part of the film is the tax collector's misuse of aforementioned freeze spell, managing to paralyze himself, the demon slayer who taught him the spell, and the ghost they're both trying to kill - so all three stand frozen for hours in a very awkward pose waiting for the spell to wear off. It's funnier than it sounds, trust me.

For all its wackiness, Chinese Ghost Story is serious stuff. Characters sacrifice themselves to save others, two sisters battle for the love of the tax collector, and the false Buddha chortles as he extols the virtues of fooling the peasantry with false deities.

In this movie, no one is who they seem and virtue ultimately rules above all. The tax collector is mistaken for a great sage. The bandit leader is mistaken for a reincarnated ghost. The demon is mistaken for Buddha. Ultimately, it is the measure of a man or woman that ultimately defines who they are, as demonstrated by the warrior who fights to the death to defend the honor of those he wronged.

Unfortunately, the subtitles of Chinese Ghost Story suffers from a lazy and inept translation. The spell chants are never translated beyond "Abracadabra, hocus pocus!" and some of the spellings are simply incorrect. Still, it wasn't so awful that it impaired my enjoyment of the film.

If Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon piqued your interest, this movie is the next step into Wuxia cinema.

    4 out of 5 stars get it.......2002-07-27

this is the weakest out of the a chinese ghost story trilogy but it is still a good show. the story has little connection the previous 2 movies. This time the costumes get more colorful and the people and monsters get more powerful. go get it.

        Product Description

Sterling: The Secret of the Lost Medallion is a decent adventure film for all audiences. I think that the McGee & Me, age 7 to 12 will like this offering from Visionary Pictures the best. Yes, this flic follows in the heartfelt tradition of The Buttercream Gang and The Last Chance Detectives. The plot is built around adventure, treasure, conflict and, of course, a few good chase scenes. Clayton Miller has done an admirable job of directing, writing, producing and editing this film. Yes, he does most of the heavy lifting with this inspirational project. Our story opens with aged father, Malcom Sterling, on his deathbed. He is a retired archaeologist and the owner of a Christian Camp. Malcoms last words to his son Nick, refer to a lost treasure known as The Medallion of Solomon or The Heart of David. Malcom passes on and the family is faced with the reality that his Christian Camp is in financial trouble. After his death, the grandson, Alex Sterling stumbles upon grandpas journal. It is full of clues and information about a possible treasure. Some students at the camp for this exciting adventure join Alex. His long lost uncle also knows about this treasure. He tries to stop Alex or at least steal any hope for fortune. There are the usual plot suspects. You know -- the camp bullies, pranks, a computer nerd and, of course, a couple of cute girls to help out. The story leaves plenty of room to include scripture and valuable life lessons.
