disappointing.......2007-09-13
I was waiting to see this and it left me with a bad taste. The movie does have some good in it but I was expecting more. Some of the scenes were slow paced. A standard film.
It Has Action Flicks "Pegg-ed".......2007-09-13
The creative forces behind the comedic take on zombie flicks, "Shaun of the Dead," give us their interpretation of "every action movie ever made" with "Hot Fuzz." Fans of "Dead" will immediately notice headliner Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel, a London policeman who's excellence in service forces his superiors to ship him to a small country town in order to protect their own reputations. "Dead" fans will also recognize his bumbling sidekick played by Nick Frost. The duo quickly find plenty of trouble in their normally quiet town. A large number of "accidents" occur that peak the interest of supercop Angel. As the body count grows, Angel's list of suspects gets even larger. Who's causing the accidents? What action film isn't referenced? It's all here in this superb comedy.
Edgar Wright's hard-cutting, musically driven direction style is all over this film. Once again, fans of "Dead" will pick up on all of Wright's nuances as the story rolls along. The action is fast, loud, and over-the-top. It's also pretty gruesome and hilarious at the same time. Pegg is dead on as Angel. Despite his small stature you honestly believe that he's the ultimate police officer. Frost is perfect as the local idiot who only has a job because his dad's the chief inspector. The rest of the cast reads like a who's who of British film. Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman and Billie Whitelaw are just a few of the actors you'll find (some with large roles and others with just a blink of the eye's screen time). Each and every person in this film hams it up perfectly and appears to have had fun with the film.
The action sequences are all pretty convincing. Even the scenes that involve sweet old ladies packing automatic heat on a bicycle come off superbly.
The DVD is nice. The extras are pretty decent, especially the Fuzz-O-Meter and "The Man Who Would Be Fuzz." Overall, though, I'd buy this disc for the movie and not the extras.
If you enjoy spoofs (but not silly ones like "Epic Movie"), check out "Hot Fuzz." It's a lot smarter and funnier than you'd expect from a spoof. If you're a fan of "Shaun of the Dead," consider this film already a part of your library. It's only a matter of time before you buy it. Highly recommended.
witty and fun.......2007-09-10
Perhaps overreaching in its ambitions to be an action-flick parody, a cult ringer and a heartfelt britfilm, 'Hot Fuzz' is one thing for sure: a good time. 'Shaun of the Dead''s Simon Pegg and Nick Frost return to form as mismatched police partners uncovering a complicated and ironically silly plot by 'Wicker Man'-style villagers to keep their tiny English town on the map. The quick-edit techniques used to full effect in 'Shaun' get a little exhausting this time around, and the number of semi-obscure pop tunes thrown in can hardly be counted-- both probably a product of this outing's enhanced budget-- but it's the clever dialogue and characterizations that carry the day. If more films could be crafted with the care and intelligence that this one has been, the world's I.Q. might gain a few points as the human race rediscovered its sense of humor.
Awesome movie.......2007-09-09
Great movie. I may even like this better that Shaun of the Dead which is another hilarious movie.
Few laughs.......2007-09-08
I couldnt wait to see this movie. I bought it and watched it right away. I was expecting some great things considering these guys made Shaun of the Dead. The first half hour flew by and I was bored. No real laughs just a typical movie. When he movies to the new town, there are a few laughs scattered thru out by it was disappointed. I love horror movies and I was surprised at how gory this movie was. It kind of reminded me of Broken Lizards. They released an amazing film, Super Troopers, then followed it up with a horror comedy that was bad, Club Dread. While these men did make a horror comedy that is probably one of the best ive ever see, this was suppose to be an action comedy. The ending of the movie was pretty sweet though.
Customer Reviews:
This s**t just got real!.......2007-09-06
I'll keep it brief:
This HD-DVD has a fantastic picture. Very, very pristine looking. The sound is really loud and will beat your surround speakers and subwoofer up something awful. Seriously. it rivals the most ridiculous sounding action movie you've seen. A simple scene like a purchase of an ice cream cone sounds almost like a multiple car crash. And the whole movie is like that. But I'm not complaining!
And there's more extras here than you'll be able to watch in one sitting. One of the extras is the second flip book drawing that Nick Frost's character shows off to Simon Pegg that we don't get to see in the film. Just that in itself is worth the price of admission!
Seriously though, this is (and I'm almost surprised to say it) an HD-DVD more than up to the task of being a demo for your home theater system.
"Is is true that there's a place in a man's head that, if you shoot it, it will blow up?".......2007-08-28
"Official vocab guidelines state that" Hot Fuzz is a wonderul parody of action movies...and all with a British accent. It's nice to see Timothy Dalton again, as well as Bill Nighy's turn as the Chief Inspector. Some hilariously great lines and scenes, well worth the price of HD-DVD and then some. Also, it's one of the best looking HD-DVD's I've seen overall. Great PQ/AQ and loaded with features.
Hot Fuzz is totally cool!.......2007-08-25
Loved this movie in theaters, so when it came to DVD in the HD DVD/DVD combo pack I had to get it so I could play it in HD DVD and my sister could borrow it for her regular player. Sound and picture are gorgeous and the movie itself is as funny as I remember. Also enjoyed the look at Nick's notebook and the outtakes bonus features. Haven't had a chance to go through all the extras, but will at some point. I heartily recommend this movie for a new British twist on the old American buddy-cop shoot-em-up genre (with a little Godzilla thrown in).
AMAZING picture quality 5 stars.......2007-08-23
WOW - what an AMAZING picture 5 STARS best pic quality I've seen on any HD disk
not so funny..........2007-08-22
i was expecting to laugh and had fun all time. we are very far from this honestly. It is a nice gentle movie but this can't go over 2 stars and don't deserve to be purchased on hd dvd.
My hd dvd has some slight pixelisation problems..first time i saw this on a Hd dvd
it is worth renting it.

Best Comedy Ever.......2007-08-31
Out of all the comedies I have seen, this is the best. It is the most original, the most well thought out, and just the most outright hilarious movie I have seen. The British accents, culture, characters, and settings make this comedy exceedingly unique and are a breath of fresh air when compared to the same old American settings(Hollywood), actors(Wilson, Stiller,Vaughn, etc.), and culture. Besides the comedy segments, this movie actually has substance and as many different qualities as any movie can have: action, adventure, drama, mystery, comedy, and suspense. As a caveat, this movie will be too unique and intelligent for some people who only like comedies based on people getting hurt or wearing funny clothes. Disclaimer - this movie contains intensely hilarious scenes that may cause some people to lose their breath or pull a muscle from laughing; the only remedy is to step out of the theater and take deep breaths.
I can't remember enjoying a movie more!.......2007-08-31
Hilarious, fast-paced, great plot. Super acting. What's not to love about this flick? Why aren't more movies like this? I think it's even better than Shaun which was great!
Hot Fuzz.......2007-08-31
I think it is really great. It is the only one that I have seen, where Jim Broadbent really goes out of his way to be thorough. At first he does not like the idea of being transfered, and no one in the department was very happy to have a new officer transfered from another town.
It is a must see!
HOT FUZZ is a GREAT MOVIE.......2007-08-29
Highest Recommendation! I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It is packed with action and laughs. The climax will have you screaming with joy! Do not hesitate to purchase this DVD.
Funny- but too violent.......2007-08-23
I thought it was pretty funny- the Danny character was great; but it was too violent at times (even though some of the violent acts were blatantly comical). I probably missed a lot of the jokes because they were subtle--I think it's one of those movies that would get funnier the more you watch it.

While the plot of this Australian film may seem a bit familiar (The Ugly Duckling meets Dirty Dancing), the whimsical tone and superb dance sequences will make you forget the movie's predictability. Scott (Paul Mercurio) is a champion ballroom dancer who wants to dance "his own steps." Fran is the homely, beginning dancer who convinces Scott that he should dance his own steps... with her. Complicating matters are Scott's domineering mother (Pat Thompson), a former dancer herself, who wants her son to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championship (the same contest she lost years ago), and a conniving dance committee that is determined that "there are no new steps!" The dancing is enjoyable, yet not overwhelming, and the movie strives hard not to take itself too seriously (the beginning of the film is even styled as a pseudo-documentary). Strictly Ballroom, while not so subtly imparting its moral ("A life lived in fear is a life half-lived"), is a laughable romp that's sure to be a crowd pleaser. --Jenny Brown

Great enteraimment and marvelous dancing.......2007-09-10
Just finished watching this movie and was not sure what to expect. Would it be good or just a POC? It is FABULOUS!! Paul Mercurio is HOT! Yeah, the plot is kinda cliche, but who cares when you get to see some authentic Spanish dancing.
"Love is in the Air".......2007-08-24
An absolute Gem !! It is extremely funny and colourful. Have seen it now many times and I still love it. Great for a comfortable or romantic evening at home with friends and loved ones !!
Great!.......2007-06-25
A simple made film that goes straight to the target. The dances are marvelous, the actors kind of funny... passo-doble is magnificent.
It's true that you have to try new experiences, always.
Marcelo Lanat Júnior
Strictly Ballroom is totally wonderful!.......2007-05-30
I have loved this movie for years--I rented it on a lark back in the late 90s and fell in love with it, cheesy dialogue and all. What gets me is the very last scene when they dance the paso. I can't help but sit at the edge of my chair with a goofy grin on my face.
Strictly Amazing.......2007-05-14
Although nothing can compare to seeing this wonderful movie for the 1st time in a theater - having this DVD has rekindled some great memories. What a great movie!

Step Up happily joins the long line of movies intoxicated by sexy bodies in motion. When an overachieving dancer (Jenna Dewan, Take the Lead) at an East Coast art school loses her partner just before a big showcase, her only possible replacement is a young tough (Channing Tatum, She's the Man) doing community service as a janitor. From there, Step Up slams together a folio of cliches, from prissy-rich-girl-gets-loosened-up-by-poor-boy to hoodlum-learns-the-error-of-his-ways-through-personal-tragedy to artist-discovers-his-voice. It's set in one of those performing arts schools where the students burst into spontaneous synchronized dance at parties. But Step Up, directed by choreographer Anne Fletcher, has a relaxed kinetic momentum and enough texture to give the nonsense just a hint of realistic grit. More than anything, Step Up shows off hunky Channing Tatum. With his sleepy eyes, broad jaw, and sloping neck, Tatum looks like an Easter Island statue come to life. His acting range may be limited, but Tatum has a definite lazy charisma; even when dancing full tilt, he looks like he just woke up and is still dreaming of the night before. Step Up also features Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) as the requisite tough-but-loving-authority-figure. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Incredible dancing and awesome music fuel STEP UP, the exhilarating and inspiring movie starring Channing Tatum (SHE'S THE MAN, COACH CARTER) who sizzles as Tyler Gage, a rough and streetwise hunk with raw talent. When Tyler finds himself doing community service at a school for the performing arts, he also finds Nora, a beautiful and privileged classically trained dancer who's searching for a temporary replacement for her injured dance partner. Spying Tyler's smooth moves, Nora decides to take a chance on him. But as they begin training, tension builds, tempers flare and the differences in their backgrounds explode igniting this electrifying tale about not giving up on your dreams.

good shipping.......2007-07-12
I got the dvd without damage or anything. I'm not going to write about the movie because my opinion is not to buy something you know nothing about. It's a great movie though. I must say that shipping was a tad slow but that's expected.
great movie!!.......2007-06-11
my daughter and i love this movie. she has watched it over and over even with the commentary! she is 14 and i am almost 40 and we both agree that it was very good. we like music and dance. and channing tatum is a good actor and good looking too!
lbuggie's review.......2007-05-29
I saw this movie just this past week-end and I must say, I really liked it! My favorite part was when Tyler and Nora first danced together in the spot their friend Lucy sang at with her boyfriend, the jerk. Same ol' plot, but different in it's own unique way.
Step Up.......2007-05-28
I am an admitted dance-film addict. Moreover, I am fixated with Channing Tatum, mostly because he is exceedingly hot (that is a scientific term). Obviously I enjoyed the movie, although I prefer the preppy Channing of "She's the Man". Still, the film was fun and entertaining and while no one is going to win any academy awards it is an enjoyable feel-good movie all the same. If you like dancing movies, you will enjoy this one.
Fun and hip.......2007-04-14
Channing Tatum as Tyler Gage gives a great performance in this fun movie. The basic idea is a bit contrived, but it works: a no-gooder teenager with a knack for rap is reluctantly coopted by a beautiful dancer in need of a partner. He will of course help her jazz up her act, she will make him a better man, and they will fall in love. Aside from annoying zigzags in Tyler's commitment (one slip is OK, but three?!), the script pulls us in. It is helped by a lot of dancing, not always great but always energetic. Rachel Griffiths is excellent in the minor role of the principal of the art school.

Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) is a crass, loud American. Laurence Jameson (Michael Caine) is a suave, urbane European. Their common ground is that they both are confidence men, and they meet in a train compartment as Benson is scamming his way across Europe, taking advantage of women's generosity. The two are forced into a rivalry, which culminates in a wager to see who can be the first to bilk $50,000 out of American heiress Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly). Their game of one-upmanship is, of course, brought to ridiculous heights as things progress. Written by Paul Henning (the mind behind such TV shows as Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is an uneven but funny mix of Martin's physical comedy and Caine's oily charms. Martin's first role as cohort is to assume the persona of Ruprecht, the "special" younger brother intended to scare off potential brides. As Ruprecht, he comes off as a cross between The Andy Griffith Show's Ernest T. Bass and Jerry Lewis; hilarious as it is, it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the film. Once the wager is on, though, Martin slips into his overly earnest mode as an American military man suffering from hysterical paralysis, with Caine as a psychologist who takes on his case. All in all, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a loose remake of the 1964 film Bedtime Story with David Niven and Marlon Brando) is a droll, intelligent comedy, short on knee slappers but long on comic situations and characterizations. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
One's got a sophisticated, suave and debonair con act. The other's got...well, an act. Together, Steve Martin and Michael Caine are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and they're absolutely ruining the Riviera in this "hilarious battle of wits and double-crosses" (Boxoffice) that "couldn't be more delightful" (The Wall Street Journal)! Martin is Freddy Benson, a smalltime conman sleazing his way through Europe on whatever handouts he can scam. Caine is Lawrence Jamieson, an impeccably dressed and high-minded artiste who thinks Freddy is giving himand all con mena bad name. At first, Lawrence agrees to help Freddy spruce up his talents and his wardrobe. But when it becomes apparent that the Riviera isn't big enough for the both of them, they make awinner-take-all wager over the fortunes of a naive American soap heiress (Glenne Headly): the firstone to "clean her out" can make the other clear outand keep the Riviera and its unsuspecting tourists to himself!
Customer Reviews:
Funniest Movie Ever.......2007-09-14
My wife and I both love this movie and have watched it a number of times. We even use some of the terms from the movie such as "Oklahoma, Oklahoma" when we see someone acting screwey. The movie is a remake of an older version with David Nivin and Marlon Brando. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes comedy in a movie.
Still the best Steve Martin comedy ever........2007-07-27
Any movie in which Michael Caine, a doddering fart at the best of times, comes off as rip-roaringly funny without telling a single joke has got to be well-written. As such, this Michael Caine movie serves as an effective antidote to most other Michael Caine movies, with oddly little change in performance on his part.
As for Steve Martin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is practically 20 years old and still stands the test of time as one of his most creative, dynamic, and hilarious roles. "Ruprecht" will have you peeing yourself with laughter.
By my recollection this was a sleeper of a movie when released, but that should only enhance what I hope will one day be the movie's cult status.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.......2007-03-24
I am not a huge Steve Martin fan, but I have thoroughly enjoyed two of his films, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," and this one, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." I think this is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It ranks up there with "The Odd Couple," and "Grumpy Old Men." How can you get much better than that?
The movie portrays everyman's fantasy of manipulating women. I emphasise the word "fantasy" because it's not very realistic. Our wives will keep us aware of that. And of course there is the surprise ending. If you haven't seen the movie, we'll keep it a surprise.
Dirty, Rotten , and Fabulous.......2007-03-22
This comedy has been one of my personal favorite funniest movies of all time. I love the way the surprising twists and turns create hilariously funny situations which are the reflections of two characters' personalities. I think Michael Caine and Steve Martin were perfect for this type of humor; they are great together on the screen.
Lawrence (Michael Caine) and Freddie (Steve Martin) are con-men who live off women; the former - big-time, pretending to be a King in the Exile and residing in a charming Mediterranean French town, the latter is good conning women into giving him small sums of money or buying him a dinner. The town is not big enough for them to work together. They agree to a "winner stays, loser leaves" bet. Enters American visitor - rich heiress Janet Colgate (Glenn Headly), sweet and naive young woman.
Glen Headly - an intelligent, attractive actress more than held her own opposite Caine and Martin. It is easy to first overlook her work but after the movie is over, you realize how effortless, artful, and complicated her performance is. Last time, when I watched the movie, my husband joined me and watching Glen Headly on the screen for what could easily be the tenth time, he asked how she did it. Perhaps, the art of How they do it not only What they do keeps me glued to the screen every time Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is on.
Highly enjoyable, sparkling, witty, and hilarious gem of the movie.
One of My All Time Favorite Movies!.......2007-02-07
I love this film! I have watched this film numerous times over the years and still find it funny as ever. It is a comedy that keeps you laughing and also keeps you guessing as to what will finally happen at the end of this movie!

Better than your average sequel, Shanghai Knights almost defies the law of diminishing returns. Lacking the freshness of Shanghai Noon, it compensates with a looser, disposable plot that plays to the strengths of costars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. It's 1887, and odd-couple heroes Chon Wang (Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Wilson) are in London to retrieve the Imperial Seal of China, stolen by an English lord (Aidan Gillen) who killed Wang's father in his quest for the British throne. Wang's lithe and lovely sister (Fann Wong) joins the battle with high-kicking force, appealing to Roy's roguish charm and surfer-dude anachronisms. While Chan continues his transition to safer stunts and good-natured homage to Buster Keaton, Gene Kelly, and other Hollywood legends, Wilson indulges the party vibe to good effect, maintaining the anything-goes approach that allows silly encounters with Jack the Ripper, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a Dickensian urchin named Charlie Chaplin. (Chaplin wasn't born until 1889, but if the filmmakers didn't care, why should you?) --Jeff Shannon

one of Jackie's best.......2007-08-23
Very underated Jackie movie. It is funny and has great action. (Nothing much else to say, I just wanted to put in my 5 stars worth.)
So-so movie.......2007-08-18
It was ok...not NEAR as funny as the first movie.....Shanghai Noon. That's all I have to say!
Rush hour meet the western.......2007-02-11
The heroic storey Chon Wang continues in Shanghai Knights the hilarious sequel to the successful Shanghai Noon. In this storey it has been a couple of years since Jackie Chain and Owen Wilson last rip roaring adventure. As the story starts of Jackie father who has protected the emperor's seal for over ten generations is brutal murder in Shanghai. Getting word from his sister Lin Jackie goes to New York to reunite with his old sidekick Roy "O' Bannon, played by Owen Wilson. Together with the aid of his sister line they must track down there killer. Which pulls them into a despicable plane set by the evil son of the former emperor and a selfish English prince to take the position of the royal throne on as the emperor of china and the other as the king of London will there dastardly plan to wipe out the rest of the royal family go through find out in the action packed conclusion. A word of warming due to several scenes in this movie with heavy Konfu action sequences and several brief scenes with heavy sexual content I do not recommend this two any one under thirteen. If you are 13 to16 years of age or older this movie should be fine for you.
Another uninspired sequel.......2006-11-10
Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Luke Wilson) reunite to recover the Imperial Seal of China and avenge the death of Chon's father, the Keeper of the Seal. They are joined by Chon's sister, the beautiful and equally dangerous Lin (Fann Wong). The chemistry of Wilson and Chan is as delightful as ever, but that (and the beautiful and talented Wong) is about the only reason to watch this tired comedy. Even the action scenes are uninspired. A disappointment.
Shanghai Knights.......2006-03-16
Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson have done a fine and funny job on this film. A must own!!

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me: More Music From The Motion Picture

"I put the grrr in swinger, baby!" a deliciously randy Austin Powers coos near the beginning of The Spy Who Shagged Me, and if the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't. This friendly, go-for-broke sequel to 1997's Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery finds our man Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the world--and, more importantly, to get back his mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into irresistible catnip for women, especially American spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and illogical, the jokes may be bad (with characters named Ivana Humpalot and Robin Swallows, née Spitz), and the scenes may run on too long, but it's all delivered sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek.
Myers's true triumph, though, is his turn as the neurotic Dr. Evil, who tends to spout the right cultural reference at exactly the wrong time (referring to his moon base as a "Death Star" with Moon Units Alpha and Zappa--in 1969). Myers teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me (Verne J. Troyer), who soon replaces slacker son Scott Evil (Seth Green) as the apple of the doctor's eye; Myers and Troyer work magic in what could plausibly be one of the year's most affecting (and hysterically funny) love stories. Despite a stellar supporting cast--including a sly Rob Lowe as Robert Wagner's younger self and Mindy Sterling as the forbidding Frau Farbissina--it's basically Myers's show, and he pulls a hat trick by playing a third character, the obese and disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard. Many viewers will reel in disgust at Mr. Bastard's repulsive antics and the scatological bent Myers indulges in, including one showstopper involving coffee and--shudder--a stool sample. Still, Myers's good humor and dead-on cultural references win the day; Austin is one spy who proves he can still shag like a minx. --Mark Englehart

The second is just as good as the first, if not better........2007-08-27
I've seen all three movies in the Austin Powers series and The Spy Who Shagged Me is probably my favorite. With over the top jokes and quirky characters, what's not to love?
For those who don't know the general storyline of the Austin Powers series, here's a brief synopsis. Austin Powers, played by Mike Myers, is a man stuck in the 60's. He's really not that good looking (in fact, I think I could even say that he's borderline disgusting) but women love him anyway. The reason? His irresistible mojo. In The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin's mojo is missing. His goal is to find his mojo as well as attempt to stop his nemesis, Dr. Evil, from blowing up the world.
Let's talk about the positives first. As I said above, the jokes are over the top but completely funny. The jokes are childish but that's what makes them funny. Second, each character is funny in their own way. Dr. Evil and Mini-Me are my absolute favorites. Dr. Evil tries way too hard to be "evil" but comes off as silly. Mini-Me reminds me of a chihuahua-cute but annoying. Lastly, the movie runs rather smoothly and the end of each scene leaves me wondering what the next scene is going to be about.
And now for the negatives. Two things. First, you have to have a certain sense of humor to enjoy the Austin Power movies. Most jokes will have the average person rolling their eyes. Further, although there is a general storyline, a lot of scenes are thrown in just for laughs, not to aid the storyline. Lastly, this movie is not Oscar-worthy by any means so don't expect much from it.
Bottom line-If you're looking for an entertaining movie to pass a couple of hours with some friends, be sure to check out this movie.
a viable sequel, good fun.......2007-08-27
i was very disappointed in some of the ridiculous plot twists. and esp that Vanessa was only a fembot, and then Basil says "i knew all along". i'm like what? and then austin is like, oh i cant believe i was going to be a one woman man for a fembot! what great news, i'm single again! is that all he cared about her. holy ****. i didnt like the really really ridiculous plot, creativiity goes low. but yes it was still funny. almost as much as the original. if you liked the original. you should still enjoy this one.
I know it's a silly movie, but I loved it.......2007-07-05
Having not been that thrilled with the first Austin Powers movie, I was completely surprised that I giggled all the way through this one.
Maybe it was because the female lead is Austin's equal in the free love game. Maybe just because I have loved Micheal York since I was a young teenager and he was in The Three Musketeers. Maybe because Fat Bastard just cracked me up. Ditto for Mini-Me. Or that I finally 'got' Dr. Evil.
Whatever it was, I loved this silly story. You have to be in the right mood for it to hit you the right way, I think, but if you're in that mood, this is a funny movie.
A bit too much at times.......2006-07-25
This is what happens when you get a film that does modest business, but becomes a huge cult sensation once it hits the home audience. You make everything bigger and better and hope the audience eats it up without noticing how empty the film feels at times. Ironically this was also one of the principle flaws of the James Bond series, which Austin Powers chiefly parodies.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me lacks the heart of the first film. That may seem like an odd comment for a comedy film like this, but it was really the character-driven bits in the first one (and the third) that kept the comedy bits together. Here the plot feels kinda random and disorganized. There are defnitely some new concepts and gags (Mini-Me!), but a lot also feel recycled. The gags are also a little much this time around, even for someone used to this kind of bathroom humour. I found the gags in the first and third much more clever and entertaining.
So we get a 3 star film, which has flaws but is generally a nice reunion of old characters. The dvd however, presents a lot of great extras that boost the final rating to 4. Lots of hilarious deleted scenes, a great commentary track, music videos, and other fun extras. A lot of care was put into this set and it shows.
The weak link of the Austin Powers trilogy, but worth owning for fans, and worth a rental for those who haven't experienced Austin Powers yet.
Hop on the good foot and do the bad thing.......2006-07-09
Austin Powers (AKA "Sir Austin Danger Powers"), Dr Evil and Fat [...] all played by Mike Myers? Fantastic! The costume and make-up team are second to none.
Verne Troyer as Mini me is great. Not that many other actors could have "filled his shoes". Danny Devito doesn't even come close!
Ivana Humpalot (Kristen Johnston) is a Russian woman sent to kill our hero. As a chess fan I was curious about the direction of this particular game.
Overall, this film is a comedy. You can't expect a Les Miserables plot or the depth of Ben Hur. It's a great laugh for a night in and it achieves what I believe it set out to do.

At first glance, a musical period comedy-drama about Gilbert and Sullivan seems an odd fit for British filmmaker Mike Leigh, who made his name with searing, intense contemporary dramas such as Secrets and Lies and Career Girls. What could the Victorian world of two composers (of "light opera," no less) have to offer a filmmaker who specializes in the world of modern-day middle class England? Plenty, as it turns out. A wonderful meditation on the creation of art, Topsy-Turvy catches Gilbert and Sullivan at a crossroads in their illustrious careers. Having scored numerous hits (like The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore), they've reached a creative dry spot with their latest, Princess Ida. Composer Sullivan (Allan Corduner) despairs of ever being taken seriously, and vows to write a "serious" piece, much to the consternation of librettist Gilbert (Jim Broadbent), who's flummoxed and unyielding when asked to change another of his whimsical, "topsy-turvy" scenarios. All seems lost when, thanks to his wife's insistence, Gilbert attends a Japanese exposition in London, and faster than you can say "Three little maids from school are we," inspiration strikes.
The rest, as they say, is history, but Leigh re-creates the creative process with meticulous and loving care, from the writing of The Mikado to its staging (wherein Gilbert acts as director), costuming, orchestration, rehearsal, and ultimate premiere. Some may balk at the running time of the film (almost three hours), but it's a journey well worth taking, down to the precise details of late-19th-century London. Still, you'll know you're in Mike Leigh territory, with his precise characterizations and a heartfelt, melancholy ending. And no one has a way with actors like Leigh. This peerless ensemble, headed up by Broadbent in an Oscar-worthy performance, inhabits their characters like a second skin, and it's wonderful to see an authentic-feeling period drama in which the actors resemble real people and you don't expect someone glamorous like Helena Bonham Carter or Rupert Everett to pop up. Gilbert and Sullivan aficionados will revel in the reenactments of The Mikado (newcomers will likely be won over, too). All in all, a breathtaking film. --Mark Englehart
Customer Reviews:
A Few Days in the Life of G&S.......2007-05-14
This is a time machine back into Mr. Carte's company in London. If you are not acquainted with G&S, you are missing works of art equaled only by Mozart, Verdi, Wagner and Joplin. The big illusion with G&S is that it
is easy; nothing is farther from the truth. This movie puts you into the opera company. Be warned, it is highly addictive!
Undiscovered, Underrated Masterpiece.......2007-04-14
In my opinion, Topsy-Turvy is one of the best movies of the past 30 years, and what makes it an even more important artistic achievement is that it is still such an unknown and underrated film. Director Mike Leigh brings out the whimsical beauty and genius of Gilbert & Sullivan and charms you into believing that these lovely scenes is what their theater company was like 100 years ago in London. The musical numbers and stage acting inside the movie are wonderfully pleasing, and make you wish that Leigh could film every one of G&S's other plays so we could enjoy them all with equal pleasure. You have to believe that G&S would be happy having Leigh manage all of their modern revivals, Topsy-Turvy makes The Mikado so lovely, exquisite and captivating, that the 3 1/2 hour movie feels like a leisurely slice of heaven. And the glimpses into Gilbert & Sullivan's eccentric private lives illustrate the many facets of both their genius and their capacity for frivolity. All in all, Topsy-Turvy is an exquisite film that didn't get the attention and many accolades it deserved, yet it is a film that must not be missed by any serious film fanatic.
Delicious!.......2007-04-13
This film is a feast both for the eyes and the ears. The costumes and settings allow us a glimpse into upper middle-class life in Victorian England. Every detail, from the box on a tall pole that was a telephone to the ladies' pendulous wire-framed bustles, is perfect.
Although the principal story, about the tension between Sir Arthur Sullivan, who thought he ought to be writing more serious music than tunes for the topsy-turvy lyrics of his collaborator, W.S. Gilbert, is interesting, the secondary story of the preparation and performance of "The Mikado" is not only compelling but also delightful to behold. The rehearsal scenes are particularly engaging, as are the personalities of the performers--the tenor, who does not want to go onstage without his corset; the baritone whose feelings are hurt when his solo is cut; the soprano with her little drinking problem; and the patter-performer with an even more serious addiction. Their characters are developed so beautifully that one begins to care intensely about what happens to them.
This beautifully-directed and well-acted film excels on almost every level. Some DVD's should be passed swiftly on to friends (or enemies, depending on the quality of the product). This one, however, is a keeper!
Just perfect.......2007-03-31
One of the best movies ever to capture the experience of mounting a production.
Just the scene of the cast meeting after the final night's rehearsal is so perfect at capturing that moment that it's worth watching the whole film. Luckily, the whole film is a delight.
My favorite Mike Leigh film...........2007-03-24
Mike Leigh's films are usually of the "kitchen sink" variety, showing middle class/working class people in the U.K., and their trials and tribulations in dealing with life. Here he does something quite different, and the results are astounding. This is my favorite Leigh film, a complete departure for him, and one in which he triumphs brilliantly. As other reviewers have noted, this is a backstage drama of Gilbert and Sullivan putting on one of their most famous operas, The Milkado. It really captures the time period brilliantly, and it shows how much time, energy, and stamina is put into putting on any production. Another pleasure I get from this film is the language. Everyone in the film is so incredibly well spoken. After nearly 20 some odd years of having to listen to Hollywood film butcher the English language (and some British ones too, no doubt trying to emulate the stupidity of Hollywood), it's lovely to hear English as it should be spoken. Yes, I am sounding a bit snobbish, but I don't care. It's bloody lovely, it is. The film is beautifully designed, directed, shot, and the performances are wonderful. The leads are perfect (Jim Broadbent as Gilbert, and Allan Courdier as Sullivan), but every role is indeed perfect here. The casting is impeccable. This is a wonderful film, one that can be experienced over and over again.
