This tongue-in-cheek 1970 variation on The Dirty Dozen looks less fresh than it did in the year of its release, but it still has some enjoyable moments. Clint Eastwood stars along with Donald Sutherland, Harry Dean Stanton, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, and Gavin MacLeod in the story of American soldiers who try to steal gold behind enemy lines in World War II. Sutherland's hippie G.I. doesn't have the sardonic and timely appeal he did during the Vietnam War, but the film's irreverence and several of the performances are worth a visit. --Tom Keogh

I have wanted this movie for a long time and found it on amazon. I am so happy to have found it. Love watching it as much as I like... thanks

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Madness - with a ring of truth.......2007-07-07

Others (many others) have described why this movie is a keeper, so here's my 2 cents. Sutherland's stoned tank commander, O'Connor's glory-hound general, Rickles' wheeler-dealer: the major and minor characters that could be and were thrown together in war, combined with the very real situations they encounter, make this film believable - sceptics not withstanding - and more than just a major war commedy. It has enough of a 'ring of truth' about it I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn some day that it DID happen...

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-12

Outstanding - - Clint Eastwood & many stars make this an enjoyable movie.

5 out of 5 stars Kelly's Heroes.......2007-05-06

Clint Eastwood has always been a favorite of mine and his protrayal
of the enterprising fighting soldier is standard of his image as
top quality movie star. The product is good with great color and
sound.

Thanks

5 out of 5 stars I still love this movie.......2007-04-04

I first saw this movie when I was a kid and was just a WWII buff. I can honestly say, though, that since then I will make a point to watch it whenever I see it. While it is not high art by any stretch, it is an eminently watchable movie that is well paced and has iconic characters you'll remember well after you see the movie (who could forget Oddball). In fact, I'm going to go watch it right now...

A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-06

I didn't expect much from this movie, but it turned out to be quite entertaining. It had a certain realism to it, and I like that, instead of the absurd storylines that are so frequent these days.

4 out of 5 stars Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23

David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.

Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.

Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.

One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time

3 out of 5 stars Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13

Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09

A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-30

This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.

if your like me you found out about andy sidaris movies thanks to cable t.v.! those after dark movies were great to a 12 year old. mr sadaris made action movies useing play mates and large amounts of nudity. this collection is 3rd of his to come out and i'm glad that there being traeted so well. not for the kids just the kids who never grew up. no deep meaning just action and big breasted playmates, what more could a growing boy want. enjoy. for plots , who cares just watch!

Yeah, baby, this is the one you've been waiting for all your sexually frustrated life. "Savage Beach" was filmed in the lovely lakes of Fort Wayne, Indiana. In fact, Andy Sidaris cleverly disguised the location to look like some tropical island in the Caribbean. But don't be fooled, that's Fort Wayne you're looking at. Lastly, the hotties! The women are not from Fort Wayne--thank goodness. Silicon free, these women are 100% natural. "It takes a special hand to wield my gun..."-The dialog is just simply awesome.

3 out of 5 stars What you see is what you get!.......2003-09-26

Andy Sidaris! Guns and explosions! Random nudity! All-synonymous. I purchased this movie because it is the prequel to "Return to Savage Beach" which was, in my opinion, the best T&A movie that I have EVER seen up to this date. And if you don't know what T&A stands for than you are unfamiliar with the genre, and I therefore do NOT recommend ANY Andy Sidaris films to you. "Savage Beach" pales in comparisons when it comes to the babes in the movie. For bouncy silicone lovers, the sequel, Return to Savage Beach would definitely be a more satisfying choice. What you see on the cover is what you get with the original "Savage Beach." Two avergage looking blondes, scantily clad, packing serious heat. I give it 3 stars out of 5 because if you are even considering this film, than you're certainly not looking for much more than what you see on a cover. And in that case, this film does deliver, and even goes slightly beyond. It is cheesy (as expected) but comical. There is even something that ALMOST mildly resembles a plot, which was a surprising bonus to this film. "Savage Beach" is good for a B-rate, C-cup, Sidaris flick. But it does lack the much better looking, super double D-cup (and beyond), silicone laced, higer polished models featured in its sequel.

Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. (Ages 5 and older) --Doug Thomas

1 out of 5 stars Racist Film with more MISrepresentations of Native Americans.......2007-09-02

I really don't have time to write out all the consitencies. Just google "The Real Pocahontas" and you will find many critiques of the film. To begin with...that wasn't even her real NAME!

1 out of 5 stars Which is worse, the historical whitewash, or the fact that it's dead boring?.......2007-08-28

Disney puts a pretty face on its rather ugly retooling of historical and biographical fact by laying on enough textual PC correctives to appease most of the thenthitives out there, and maybe even a few of the people who have some real reason to be offended. (And, yes, they do have reason.) This doesn't help it as a movie, though - and neither does the tiresome and mushy romance angle that slurps up a lot of the screen time. Great pains were reportedly taken with the animation, which I found to be competently uninspired by Disney standards of the period. A key color scheme associated with the character Pocahontas is an unfortunate mash of purples, pinks and golds - a color combination most recognizably associated with Barbie. This Pocahontas is, in fact, something like the genetic offspring of Barbie and a fictionalized historical figure - grown in a medium of touchy-feely new-age sentiment (emphasis on the touchy). I could probably forgive it any faults, though, if it were any good as a movie.

Really, this is material Disney should have left alone. They might have actually had a more entertaining film (albeit a more offensive one) if they had felt free to treat the story LESS respectfully. They might have also had a better movie if they had treated the material with the kind of respect it actually deserves, but is simply way beyond their ken creatively and intellectually. What we get is Disney as a bull trying hard to gingerly tippy-toe around a china shop that it has no business being in in the first place.

A similar schizophrenia plagued their ill-advised adaptation of a famous Victor Hugo novel in the same period, when the studio was evidently nurturing some loftily outsize artistic aspirations, but the result was so grotesquely perverse that it actually ended up being worth seeing - if only for the jaw-dropping 'what were they smoking at Disney' quality. (It also had some truly impressive animation.) 'Pocahantas' is not in nearly poor enough taste to provide entertainment on that level, but it's still in way too poor taste to be accepted or respected on the terms it gropes for. If nothing else, it proves that political correctness doesn't equal real sensitivity - nor does it make for interesting cinema.

Anyway, this one fails pretty miserably. Even if you can get past the inherent offensiveness of Smith and Pocahontas hooking up (according to history, if they ever did it was in what would now be considered a combination of statutory and actual rape), the execution of the romantic element here ranges from excruciatingly dull at best to... {insert puking noises}.

I don't always demand accuracy in portraying people who actually lived. I cringe when ignorant people present as history details of the Marquis de Sade's life that they could only have culled from the highly fictionalized 'Qillls.' I enjoyed that movie, though, (never saw the play) and so I was willing to forgive the fact that it was actually straight-up hogwash as both history and biography - even knowing that the facts of the man's life are actually more dramatic and interesting than than the mostly invented and over-the-top story in 'Quills,' I forgave it. It was an engaging two hours with some fun performances, so I let it go. And when people who have been exposed to it prove repeatedly that they are depressingly given to accepting what they see in a movie as fact if they don't actually know any better, I don't blame the movie, I blame THEM.

My recent experience with the dreadful 'Lonely Hearts' was another story, however. The transformation of lonely, insecure and famously obese serial killer Martha Beck into a sexually confident femme fatale hottie played by Salma Hayek felt like a gross betrayal. Not that a creep like Beck (or Sade, for that matter) deserves anyone's reverence - but the changes were typical Hollywood, they made her less interesting and more banal, and, as a character, she no longer made any sense. (Hayek's man-jumping vamp is clearly NOT the type that would need to look in the lonely hearts pages for a mate - but her presence does allow for loads of photogenic sex scenes that pass for character development. My brother has said, by the way, that he "would DO Pocahontas," but I don't think they drew her that way on purpose, do you? :| ) Making that character conform to a Hollywood standard (stereotype) was symptomatic of the film's overall slick ineptitude and gutlessness. If it had been a better movie, would I have forgiven the inaccuracies? Almost certainly - but after two excellent (non-Hollywood, natch) films that strove to interpret that character faithfully (and were all the more fascinating for it), 'Lonely Hearts' would have had to pull out some serious magic to get by with that. (I don't see it as a possibility, since that particular character interpretation was born of an imaginative bankruptcy that infected every aspect of the script.) Given the dismal situation for actresses in Hollywood who aren't built like Barbie, I would have liked to have seen some outrage over 'Lonely Hearts'' (mis)casting.

'Pocahontas' is another can of beans, entirely. As someone else put it when it came out, imagine a movie in which Anne Frank falls for, and runs off with, a German soldier. That's not overstating it by much. Let's say somebody DID make that movie. Would that be bad? Of course. What if it was actually an exciting and entertaining movie? Personally, I feel it is the responsibility of the viewer to NEVER take what they see in the movies (or on TV, or in the news, etc.) at face value - and if they do, that is a failure of the culture they live in. (F A I L U R E, people.) I have nothing but disgust for parents who use the TV and the computer as a babysitter without instilling any kind of media awareness in their kids (pointy finger: you know who you are... I hope) - but they probably know no better themselves how to evaluate what they absorb. So if the 'Anne Frank in Love' film were real, and if it were actually good, I'd probably recommend it as cinema, but it would be a heavily qualified recommendation. (See my review of 'Cannibal Holocaust' for an example of a VERY heavily qualified recommendation.) I am not the kind of jackass who feels obliged to run down Leni Riefenstahl's remarkable talent just because she made movies for Hitler. Hitler, the monster, at least had some taste to choose her. Now let's say for a moment that the 'Anne Frank in Love' movie got made, and that it's main target audience was CHILDREN...

Hmmmmm...

Well, the one star rating here isn't because I don't respect the movie's approach to history, it's because, first and foremost, THE MOVIE BLOWS... and I don't respect its approach to history, either - particularly given the target audience.

If you show this to kids (not that I can see them being engaged by it, but okay), it demands A LOT of context and explanation. (Or you can just go ahead and BE an irresponsible parent. Most evidently are these days.)

3 out of 5 stars Overall enjoyable.......2007-08-23

I rate this straight down the middle. The music is pretty nice, as well as the animation but the story struck me as mediocre. Perhaps because the writers took great liberties in re-writing history. Still, I did for the most part enjoy watching it. I havent seen it in a while and probably won't but if you love Disney, then definetely watch this.

2 out of 5 stars Typical Anti-American hash...........2007-07-10

A typical British production where the Americans are made to look stupid and inept. I guess they are still not over lend lease yet. A Confusing plot line and a hodge podge of dark comedy and harsh violence makes this a tedious film experience. You may want to still watch this if you are into WW2 flicks - otherwise try "Band of Brothers".

2 out of 5 stars You Will Need Till The Last Drop of Your Patience to Watch This Film Until the End. .......2007-06-07

"The Last Drop" (2005) is a not very successful hybrid product. The film jumps from seriousness to parody; from classic war scenes to grotesque; from hilarious (or intended hilarious) situations to violent realistic sequences.
In some aspects "The Last Drop" resembles "Kelly's Heroes" (1970), except that this last one was frankly in slapstick key (and was a good comedy BTW).

The story is as follows. When Operation Market-Garden was launched trying to end WWII in a couple of months, Operation Matchbox was a secret mission inside the original one.
The small commando party has secret goals known only to the Leader. The group lands (crashes) on Holland aboard of a glider and immediately are attacked by German forces.
From this point on several groups of conflicting interests are introduced: an SS group with a secret mission, a group of rogue German soldiers in search of loot & revenge, a couple of infiltrated Dutch resistant, an accountant that is despised by all the other parties and last but not least a caricature American Colonel with his corresponding armed detachment.
The plot grows more and more confusing with each scene... until at last film's end arrives and liberates the patient spectator.

It is a pity some good resources are dilapidated as special effects and cinematography that are high-quality by themselves.

Playacting if hard to evaluate as I think performers were as confused as viewer trying to identify which were the real traits of their characters.

This is poor war film, that only hard-core WWII fan should give it a try.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't know whether it was comedy or drama.......2007-02-06

This film would have made a poor, but not terrible, drama, had they elected to play it straight. But they didn't. They made it part comedy, so what you get is a very odd, confused film that doesn't know what it wants to be. You don't know whether you're supposed to laugh or cry. Mostly, you just fast-forward.

Others have commented on the lack of historical authenticity, but one thing they got right was the look and feel of the German machine guns. Those German machine guns had an incredibly high rate of fire that was well in advance of anything the British or Americans had at that time.

1 out of 5 stars The Last Drop.......2006-12-28

This movie was the absolute worst I've seen. Just about every character was miscast. The plot was confusing--probably because it was so weak and unbelievable. The acting was so over-the-top and amateurish that it was almost embarrasing--as was the directing. Attention to detail was non-exsistant, with wrong and out-of-period uniforms, vehicles, and weapons, etc. The soundtrack really brought me to tears; it was a mixture of dramatic orchestral tracks and hard rock of all things! If you like watching an Airborne Infantry officer wear new-looking flat-top service cap and leather flight jacket in combat (instead of the more regulatory and sensible helmet and field jacket)...or watching idiots making hip shots with their service revolvers against MG-42's...or watching moronic looking SS officers who ride around the entire movie with their upper torsos sticking out of their staff-car's sunroof, then this picture is for you. If you are looking for a quality film like Band of Brothers, or Saving Private Ryan, don't buy or rent this garbage. In fact, it doesn't even come close to Kelly's Heroes, which at least had a good plot and terrific acting.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor movie.......2006-10-13

One of the worst WWII movies I've ever seen and I watch every one that is released. Terrible sound track, poor audio mixing, hard rock in the music score, disrespectful of German, American and British troops. Billy Zane was the only actor that was close to properly cast for the part, the remainder of the cast are good actors, but not in this movie. If you know nothing of the WWII era and of WWII and you like movies were there is nothing close to the good guy, you'll like this movie.

3 out of 5 stars There's Gold In Them Thar Woods!.......2003-12-21

Andy Sidaris was a master at writing and directing these types of movies, incorporating the elements of "bullets, bombs and babes." However, "Enemy Gold" was written and directed by his son, Christian Drew Sidaris. Christian isn't as accomplished at making movies as Andy is. His father always favored exotic locales, while Christian filmed most of this movie in the woods. Speaking of woods, most of the actors recite their dialogue in a very wooden manner. To be honest, most of them were hired for their physiques and not their acting skills. Only Rodrigo Obregon as the drug lord Santiago, and Julie Strain as hot hitwoman Jewel Panther, can really act. Most disappointing of all, the obligatory love scenes are kept to a (pardon the pun) bare minimum. Where Andy would linger over the love scenes in great detail, Christian rushes through them as quickly as he can to get back to the story. One can only hope that Christian will overcome his tendency towards prematurely finishing these scenes in his future movies!

4 out of 5 stars A Six Pack Of Bullets, Bombs And Babes!.......2005-03-02

MALIBU EXPRESS (1985) - 3 STARS
Written and directed by Andy Sidaris, this early effort puts too much emphasis on comic relief and not enough on the action/adventure aspects of the film. Soap opera actor Darby Hinton stars as Cody Abilene, a private investigator who can't shoot straight, can't act, but is irresistible to women. Surrounded by strong, beautiful women, such as Sybil Danning (Contessa Luciana) and Lynda Wiesmeier (June Khnockers), this movie is more reminiscent of a Russ Meyer film than a James Bond thriller. Fortunately, Darby Hinton didn't appear in any more Andy Sidaris movies.

HARD TICKET TO HAWAII (1987) - 4 STARS
This movie introduces the characters of federal agents Donna Hamilton (Playboy Playmate Dona Speir), Taryn (Playboy Playmate Hope Marie Carlton), and Edy Stark (Playboy Playmate Cynthia Brimhall). Donna and Taryn, whose cover is flying an inter-island cargo plane in Hawaii, accidentally intercept a delivery of diamonds intended for drug lord Seth Romero, played by Rodrigo Obregón. They also accidentally let loose a snake infected by toxic waste, with deadly results. (Watch out for an exploding toilet!) Soap opera star Ronn Moss plays agent Rowdy Abilene, another mimbo (male bimbo) federal agent. The Sidaris formula of combining James Bond movies, Playboy videos and exotic travelogues really starts with this movie.

PICASSO TRIGGER (1988) - 5 STARS
Donna Hamilton, Taryn and Edy Stark are back, along with double agent Pantera (Playboy Playmate Roberta Vasquez). Picasso Trigger is the name of a tropical fish, a priceless painting, and the code name of Salazar, the villain of this movie. Soap opera star Steve Bond plays agent Travis Abilene, while Rodrigo Obregón plays bad guy Miguel Ortiz. Miguel has Salazar killed in order to consolidate his power, but you can't keep Picasso Trigger down! The action goes from Paris to Dallas to Hawaii to Las Vegas in this tale of double crosses and surprises. The complicated plot and fast pacing make this one of the best of Andy's movies.

SAVAGE BEACH (1989) - 5 STARS
Donna Hamilton and Taryn team up one last time as federal agents. They receive a call to fly some badly needed vaccine from Molokai to a hospital on another island. On their return flight, a raging storm forces Donna and Taryn to crash land on a remote South Seas island. Gold, which the Japanese had stolen from the Philippines during World War II, just happens to be buried there. At the same time, the U.S. Navy sends a commando unit to the island in search of the gold. Rodrigo Obregón plays Martinez, a representative of the Philippine government who says he wants the gold returned to his country, but really wants the gold for himself. A band of international terrorists, working in conjunction with Martinez, also arrive to turn the remote island into a savage beach!

GUNS (1990) - 4 STARS
Donna Hamilton (Playboy Playmate Dona Speir) and Nicole Justin (Playboy Playmate Roberta Vasquez) head up the team of L.E.T.H.A.L. (Legion to Ensure Total Harmony And Law) agents. Erik Estrada stars as the villain Juan Degas, also known as Jack of Diamonds. He's a South American gunrunner who uses Hawaii as his base of operations. Juan uses a pair of transvestite hitmen (shades of Ed Wood!) to kill Nicole, but they kill the wrong woman. The action switches to Las Vegas, where Juan utters the immortal line, "A Smith and Wesson beats four aces!" Agents and villains keep getting killed during the course of the film. When Juan has a tough female D.A. kidnapped, who just happens to be Donna Hamilton's mother, he sets in motion the final showdown between himself and Donna.

ENEMY GOLD (1993) - 3 STARS
This movie was written and directed by Andy's son, Christian Drew Sidaris. Only Rodrigo Obregón as the drug lord Santiago, and Julie Strain as hot hitwoman Jewel Panther, can really act.

Each movie is hosted by Andy Sidaris and Julie Strain, and includes audio commentaries by Andy Sidaris and his wife Arlene, who produced the movies. Also, each movie is followed by an "Andy Sidaris Film School" segment, in which Andy and Arlene show how to film action and love scenes. In addition, there are trailers for each movie, still galleries of exclusive photos for each film, and lots of other extras.
A TOTAL OF 24 STARS, DIVIDED BY SIX MOVIES, EQUALS AN AVERAGE RATING FOR THE FILMS OF 4 STARS.

2 out of 5 stars Amiable Kiwi-UK-US-Oz film; let down by horrible soundtrack .......2007-01-01

This should have been a three-star movie. It has merits, chief of which is the use of the same stunning South Island (New Zealand) scenery that appeared in the Lord of the Rings films, but without the digital trickery.

There are a few authentically kiwi moments: the scene where the heroes tow a broken helicopter into an isolated farm, where the farmers turn it into something like a moon buggy using only number 8 wire and four-by-two draws on one of the classic New Zealand myths (kiwi engineering, mate); the mountain hut where people drop round spontaneously to drink and sing old songs is another, and completely true to life (no, seriously, it is); and the scene where the old codger is thrown out of the pub and tries to get back through the wall with a chain saw is adapted from a sequence in Barry Crump's "Hang on a Minute Mate", which starts as a set of charming yarns and steadily turns darker, and is one of New Zealand's best novels. So if you want New Zealandiana, it's there.

There's also a plot about two gangs searching for a lost US plane containing $50 billion in bullion, or some such. One side are supposed to be bad, and are led by George Peppard, with kiwi superstar Bruno Lawrence as his chief henchperson. The other side is Ken Wahl and Lesley Ann Warren, who you may remember from such films as, plus Donald Pleasance, usually a reliably enjoyable actor. The story is the usual stuff no-one could care about, but it's amiably done using brilliant locations, and it ought to have been pleasant enough.

Which brings us to the drawbacks. First, Donald Pleasance's performance is horrible. David Hemmings, directing his second film, obviously told Pleasance to be a wheezing, cackling drunken sot, but unfortunately neither Pleasance nor Hemmings knew when to pull that in once the point had been made. Pleasance just doesn't shut up. He wheezes, he cackles, constantly, without purpose or motivation; it's just what he does. Five minutes of this was four more than I needed to listen to, and Pleasance just doesn't let up. It is one of the most dislikeable film performances I have ever endured, and yet we are obviously supposed to think of the character as a loveable old scamp. Instead I found myself rooting for the bad guys, seriously and with feeling, every time one of them pointed a gun at him. If the only way to get Pleasance to tone down his performance was to kill off the character, it would have been well worth it. Sooner the better.

The other thing that drags down this film also concerns the soundtrack. The film score by the Australian hack Brian May is indescribably awful: witless, noisy, clichéd junk. Unfortunately the sound editor must have liked it much more than the actors' performances, so that May's pointless throbbing and booming and flailing is turned up so loud, relative to the dialogue track, that much of the time you can't hear whatever it is that the actors are shouting at each other.

It's a pity, because Ken Wahl and Lesley Ann Warren actually did a pretty good job of their part of the movie, and there's nothing wrong with the mindless chase genre. But as a result of the horrible soundtrack, disfigured by May's awful music, terrible sound mixing, and Pleasance's horrible performance, the film is most bearably watched with the sound turned off, as a travelogue of the Southern Alps.

By the way, this film, called "Treasure of the Yankee Zephyr" here, is the same film as "Race to the Yankee Zephyr", its original title, and it has also been marketed as "Race for the Yankee Zephyr".

If they re-edited it, putting May's music in the distant background and muting Pleasance's sound effects as far as possible, they'd have a three-star movie. As it is it really only deserves one star, to be honest, but I gave it an extra star for the scenery.

Cheers!

3 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, I guess.......2006-08-25

The master wasn't so hot; not much better than the crappy VHS copy I had. But it works, and no tracking worries.

The packaging is amateurish, with a misspelling or two and completely misleading cover art.

The disk menu is bare-bones with no extra features.

I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more for this, long wait or not, but I'm satisfied.

3 out of 5 stars Frenzied silliness in Fiordland.......2005-11-09

A deer hunter(Wahl)and his bumbling partner(Pleasance) by chance
stumble upon the wreckage of a DC-3 on the shore of Lake
Wakatipu. Included amongst its cargo are medals, booze, money and
$50 million in gold bullion. Before they can begin recovery,
others get wind of the discovery and show up to pressure them in
revealing the location. This is an action/chase, frankly silly,
film with most of its energy occurring in the numerous stunts,
chases and explosions. I'll bet that George Peppard does not put this one
on his resume. Great helicopter shots of Fiordland and the Queenstown
area are the main reasons for seeing this one. VHS copies are NOT widescreen.
The DVD has no extras, but it is presented in the original 2.35:1 Cinemascope widescreen.

1 out of 5 stars NOT RELATED...BUT CLOSE!.......2005-11-06
