3 out of 5 stars beautiful, but stock.......2007-07-12

When i was but a wee one i saw BS6 when it aired for the first time in America on cartoon network (rock on). Then it never aired again... ever. When i saw it on Amazon i had no choice but to get it. I wasn't disappointed, but the dialog leaves something to be desired, and the entire storyline seems rushed. The visuals on the other hand are astounding, some of the best i have ever seen. Its more of a rental than a classic, but its pretty cheap.

I never expected that a show that bursts with graphics can be so deep. You have to watch each episode sequentially to get the big picture. The animation made me interested in this series, but it was the drama the kept me glued.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Submarine.......2000-07-14

Really good anime, the story is good and the action is really good in this anime, if you are a real anime you must get it!

2 out of 5 stars Great animation.......2000-06-22

This anime has awesome animation. The best computer graphic animation I have seen. Yet, the story line is confusing and you have to really pay attention to this anime. If you like anime just for the awesome animation you can get this but...it's plot is nothing special.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2000-06-17

2 out of 5 stars All show and no substance!.......2007-07-01

The only strong point and the only reason this doesn't get a 1 star rating, is because of the animation. That is the only thing this anime has going for it. The explosions, the water waves, the sun glares, the ocean, it all looks extremely beautiful. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT MAKES AN ANIME GOOD!

The actual story is the only interesting factor. The glaciers were melted and most of the earth was flooded. During the aftermath, the surviving people are being attacked by water dwelling creatures equipped with their own navy. They focused too much on the animation and left out character development. To include a decent plot and decent villians. Mid way through this and all the way to the end, I didn't give a damn about the characters. And practically everyone you don't know dies a dramatic death.

And the soundtrack. I don't mind jazz music at all. In fact, I like it. But this soundtrack just didn't fit this anime. It felt out of place in every single scene to me. This could have easily worked for Cowboy Bebop.

And the ending I don't really want to touch that. This anime is all show. If your looking for something, just to see how beautiful it is. Then this is your anime. All the people who gave this 1 and 2 stars, and said the only strong point is the animation. Are telling the truth. Buy this at your own risk.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful anime production.......2007-03-16

Honestly, after viewing this anime, in my opinion, this is a great anime. Back in 1998 and 1999, the technology in creating the special effects is considered as a supernova because of the impression that it led to development of similar special effects in other anime in the later years. The special effects created by computer technology is bravo. 2D and 3D can be developed harmoniously. I find the story fanastic. Solely robots or fightings can be boring in some other anime. Without the cause of the story seems vague in some other anime. Excitement is entertaining. However without the underlying meaning as a support in some other anime, the story looks dry. Blue Submarine No.6 contains lots of elements which can give something that other anime lack. Because this is the predecessor of Last Exile so the fans of Last Exile must love this anime.

4 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and exciting ride.......2006-09-25

So the world is at an end due to the melting of the polar ice caps (a quite plausible scenario). A mad scientist has begun to engineer aquatic mutants for unknown reasons, and humankind is on the verge of extinction, with a last hope- a group of submarines manned by the best naval forces all over the world.

It seems a bit contrived at first, but Blue Submarine 6 engaged me in it's story far more than I thought it would. At first look, it might come off as a simple war anime series. Thankfully, the series is not as one dimensional, and far more realistic (at least in my eyes) than any far-off mecha space war (see: Gundam). The apocalyptic landscape and philosophical questions addressed were enough to hold my interest, and the jazz and blues music were a good complement to the underwater sea battles (a refreshing change from the oft-overused jpop and classical tunes of other series) as well as the more thoughtful bits.

The CGI was also done well, the animation is clean, and overall the series is worth a watch.

4 out of 5 stars Kool subs.......2006-07-26

This movie is really cool if you are a naval fan, story is a little deep but the action makes up for the slow parts.

3 out of 5 stars I just did not get into it.......2006-03-06

There was just nothing that grabbed me with this series. The graphics were fine but not exceptionel. The story was lacking the most, with nothing for me to get interested in. As a reference: I did enjoy RahXephone very much and loved Kino's Journey. This may explain why I did not get into this.

The look of the anime series Blue Submarine No. 6 is the place to start any description of it. The 1998 show uses more computer-generated 3-D images than any series, yet the show looks like a video game. The plot, which also reminds one of a video game, is like a spinoff of Waterworld: in the near future, Earth's coastal cities are flooded, and an evil power, Zorndyke, has brought his minions to destroy the remaining humans. Earth's best weapon is a submarine fleet led by the supercool No. 6. Young Mayumi is an officer assigned to bring hotshot Tetsu back into the fold. The Travis Bickle-like Tetsu is more intrigued by learning about the faceless enemy--all that is known is their destructive tactics and elegant ships, intriguing combinations of beast and machine (a whale submarine, an insectlike tank). We discover just enough of the series' premise in this introductory 30-minute chapter, which is always watchable if never memorable. Rated 13 and older for violence and some nudity. --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Anime with a different flavor.......2004-06-05

Fans of anime in general will definitely dig Satoru Ozawa's 4-part, 'Blue Submarine No. 6,' series. For starters, being that the story is centered around futuristic submarines and naval warfare, viewers are treated to some terrific battle scenes taking place on and below water - a setting typically not utilized in anime. Vol. 1 of the series sets the stage nicely showcasing some of the offensive/defensive capabilities of Blue Sub No. 6 and the colorful assortment of characters within it.

While much has already been commented on regarding the use of CG and traditional animation utilized in this series, in summary it looks just fine and at times absolutely breathtaking. But perhaps one of the best aspects of this disc is the really awesome Dolby 5.1 audio track for the Japanese-language track. This mix will have your system pumping out for sure - definitely one of the better audio mixes i've heard on an anime DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Water is fun..So are Submarines :D.......2003-07-20

This was pretty good. The story needs some deveopment but other than that..it was sweet. Charaters are cool and the music is AWESOME! Wicked....

5 out of 5 stars The end couldn't be cooler.......2002-03-15

This is one of the best "end of the world" stories. I liked the bad guy of the story, instead of being some psycho he actually has a reason for destroying the world. Good CG animation too. Great anime { once again}.

5 out of 5 stars cartoon network fan.......2002-01-30

I saw this series on Cartoon Network one day, and I fell head over heels in love with it. I am not much of an anime fan, but I still thought it was great (which, for some reason, one of the other reviewers said probably wouldn't happen). It is hauntingly beautiful. I do feel that it is too short of a series, only because I liked it so much that I didn't want it to end.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacularly better than the Edited version.......2002-01-23

Blue Sub 6 Vol 1 has a mix of Romeo and Juliet within it that comes into play in later volumes. Even if you haven't seen the edited version on Cartoon Network's Toonami, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blend of CG, Anime, and Jazzy Sounds.......2003-03-13

The story of Blue Submarine #6 (Ao no Rokugo) comes to a conclusion in this extended length episode. Revolutionary for its blending of computer generated graphics with traditional cel animation--done before but never to such extent or with such success--Blue #6 like many modern anime is a cautionary environmental tale of mankind's struggles to get along with Nature.

In prior episodes, a scientist has brought about devastating ecological changes to the Earth, flooding most of the land by melting off the polar caps and making Antarctica a habitable paradise populated with his sylvan genetically-engineered creations. The crew of Blue #6 have orders to launch a nuclear strike on the scientist's "base" (a small cabin in a village, as we later see) to stop his flipping of the world's magnetic poles and subsequent extinction of mankind.

The final episode features some incredible battle sequences between the forces of humankind and those of Nature (who have an giant submarine modified from an old battleship) and a somewhat confusing at times anticlimatic confrontation between the main character and the "evil" scientist. Who will win? Will humanity survive at the expense of Nature, or can the two coexist?

The soundtrack is outstanding, performed by a Japanese big band group and includes the stunning, sultry, Jazz-club-esque closing title, Minasoko ni Nemure (literally, "Sleep on the Sea Floor" or "(this thing that) Sleep Inside Everyone." Some may find the juxtaposition of brassy big band jazz sounds over climatic battle sequences a bit off-putting, but for me, they work hand-in-hand and offer a wonderful sensory experience.

Check out the whole series. I saw this episode first and went back to see what I had missed (most of the story won't make sense otherwise) and am glad that I did.

1 out of 5 stars Looks Aren't Everything.......2002-08-14

...P>The story behind "Blue 6" is simple, but made meaninglessly complex. Apparantly the script writers decided that instead of coming up with their own ideas, it would be much more fun to borrow a story-line that seems less in place with anime and more in line with the plot of a Marvel comic book...

The story is completely redundant. You have everything in here to make a cliche'd movie that only the Sci-fi channel would want to run. Sure, there are a few imagninative moments here and there,...

The characters are possibly the rarest to find even in bad anime....these characters don't make any sense!! Who are they? Where did they come from? Why are they in charge of this submarine? Why do they have a little kid working the communications? And why does one of their team mates resemble a more amsculine Wionna Ryder? Seriously, if you're going to spend this much time working on the overall look of the OAV, you might as well have put some thought into the characters. No matter, what happens to them or what troubles they face, you never seem to care about what happens to the crew, not enough detail was given even for that...

The music was very annoying...simply put. It sounded as if someone stole sheet music from yoko Kanno, then decided that they didn't like they way the score was arranged, so they took liberties upon changing the music into something less interesting and more...cold. The music just seems to "start up" without any purpose and it really throws your mind for a loop it doesn't have to go through. It's basically jazz, if you can call that, and it really doesn't have a place in the world of "Blue Sub 6."

The battle sequences are the only things that are well animated, and even then they seem to be borrowing ideas from anime that involve starships. So the battlescenes basically turn what seemed like an original submarine/post-apoclyptic anime into "Macross"-underwater. They do give some thrill, but what's the point? The story is so lame you hardly understand why there are underwater battles going on in the first place.

The series is only 4 episodes long. 4 episodes=4 DVDs. That's 1 episode per DVD, so each DVD is 30 minutes long...something ain't right here. Why pay [$$] for thirty minutes? It makes no sense!! And to top it off, these DVD's don't come with any extras,

Overall, "Blue Sub 6" could have been a better anime, but not in this lifetime...

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth owning.......2001-10-05

Despite the price factor, and only one episode per DVD, this series is so fantastic, and I'm glad I own it. If you are a DVD fanatic, love anime, have a great home theater setup, and want to watch some very pleasurable eye-candy, this is the set for you. The story is compelling enough to keep your attention, and the visuals are just plain awesome! Sad side note for the sub-title haters; 5.1 is only offered in Japanese! But, for you purists that hate bad english dubbing, you will be very pleased. Actually, the english voice overs could have been a lot worse, but I would much rather enjoy it in its original form. This is a must-have series, so get it!

5 out of 5 stars Stop the horns, but bring on the battle!!!.......2001-04-03

In my opinion, the mix of CG & anime make for one of the best anime videos Ive ever seen. Im a fan of all anime, and have a wide nackground, and although the series is way too short and the battle music needs to drift away from that cheery horn, BS6 is recommended to anyone who likes a good plot and a lot of action. What is with the music, though? You dont have an epic battle scene filled with ragin waters, exploding subs, and deadly missles, while a squeaky horn is playing in the background. The characers are likeable, especially Tetsu Hayami (Im not totally confident on the spelling). I tend to like the quiet, mysterious guys who have a bad temper. Basically, i recommend this anime to anyone and everyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars state of the art.......2000-10-25

This four volume series is exceptional--I like it as much as Macross Plus with the drama, the dialogue, and of course, the action and mechanical designs. Computer graphics and cell animation merge seamlessly. The characters are deep and diverse. The setting is similar to Voogies Angel and Agent Aika (or Waterworld) , while the theme of a scientist creating human-animal hybrids or mutants reminds me of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Even though each DVD is only about 30 minutes long (this last volume is longer), as long as I don't pay more than twenty dollars this collection is worth it. Cartoon Network is going to show this series Nov 6, but for best picture quality this is best enjoyed on DVD. The dubbing was done by Coastal Carolina--my favorite sound studio. This series gives not only beautiful graphics and glorious explosions, but asks the nature of humankind's tendency for conflict and violence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my favorite episode.......2000-10-30

Blue Submarine No.6 is a great miniseries, and starting this episode you will start to pay less attention to the wonderful graphics and more attention to the motives of the characters.

2 out of 5 stars Too Short for the Price.......2000-10-24

This DVD, although visually impressive isn't worth the price for only 30 min of animation. It was an interesting blend of computer generated scenes along with traditional animation, but there were sections that just didn't mesh all that well. It sets the stage for the rest of the series, but doesn't cover enough plot to make me want to buy the second volume.

4 out of 5 stars Finally it all comes together!.......2000-08-27

While visually the first 2 episodes of Blue Sub were amazing, they just left you wanting a little more substance. Hearts, the third episode, fleshes out the main characters a little more and clarifies the conflict. The production value of the disk is on par with the rest of Bandai's work. The disk has tight menu's and great audio video quality. If it weren't for the bits of blood and nudity this series would be a great demonstration for DVD picture quality, as well as the future of animation. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Hearts.......2000-06-20
