Description

Sacha Baron Cohen brings his Kazakh journalist character Borat Sagdiyev to the big screen for the first time. Leaving his native Kazakhstan, Borat travels to America to make a documentary. As he zigzags across the nation, Borat meets real people in real situations with hysterical consequences. His backwards behavior generates strong reactions around him exposing prejudices and hypocrisies in American culture.

Amazon.com

It takes a certain kind of comic genius to create a character who is, to quote the classic Sondheim lyric, appealing and appalling. But be forewarned: Borat is not "something for everyone." It arrives as advertised as one of the most outrageous, most offensive, and funniest films in years. Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen reprising the popular character from his Da Ali G Show), leaves his humble village to come to "U.S. and A" to film a documentary. After catching an episode of Baywatch in his New York hotel room, he impulsively scuttles his plans and, accompanied by his fat, hirsute producer (Hardy to his Laurel), proceeds to California to pursue the object of his obsession, Pamela Anderson. Borat is not about how he finds America; it's about how America finds him in a series of increasingly cringe-worthy scenes. Borat, with his '70s mustache, well-worn grey suit, and outrageously backwards attitudes (especially where Jews are concerned) interacts with a cross-section of the populace, catching them, a la Alan Funt on Candid Camera, in the act of being themselves. Early on, an unwitting humor coach advises Borat about various types of jokes. Borat asks if his brother's retardation is a ripe subject for comedy. The coach patiently replies, "That would not be funny in America." NOT! Borat is subversively, bracingly funny. When it comes to exploring uncharted territory of what is and is not appropriate or politically correct, Borat knows no boundaries, as when he brings a fancy dinner with the southern gentry to a halt after returning from the bathroom with a bag of his feces ("The cultural differences are vast," his hostess graciously/patronizingly offers), or turns cheers to boos at a rodeo when he calls for bloodlust against the Iraqis and mangles "The Star Spangled Banner."

Success, John F. Kennedy once said, has a thousand fathers. A paternity test on Borat might reveal traces of Bill Dana's Jose Jimenez, Andy Kaufman, Michael Moore, The Jamie Kennedy Xperiment, and Jackass. Some scenes seem to have been staged (a game Anderson, whom Borat confronts at a book signing, was reportedly in on the setup), but others, as the growing litany of lawsuits attests, were not. All too real is Borat's encounter with loutish Southern frat boys who reveal their sexism and racism, and the disturbing moment when he asks a gun store owner what gun he would recommend to "kill a Jew" (a Glock automatic is the matter-of-fact reply). Comedy is not pretty, and in Borat it can get downright ugly, as when Borat and his producer get jiggly with it during a nude fight that spills out from their hotel room into the hallway, elevator, lobby and finally, a mortgage brokers association banquet. High-five! --Donald Liebenson

On the DVD
"Global Visitings" captures Borat-mania in all its hype and glory, as Sacha Baron Cohen, never breaking character, promotes his film around the world. On the itinerary is Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the Toronto Film Festival, a now-legendary screening aborted after a projector malfunction. A mixed bag of deleted scenes finds Borat trying to bait more unsuspecting citizens, including an animal-control worker who refuses Borat a dog after he asks, "How do you recommend I cook this?" and a doctor who is nonplussed by Borat's obscene medical history. A supermarket visit offers the most maddening fromage-inspired looniness since Monty Python's "Cheese Shop" sketch. Also good for a few chuckles are a faux soundtrack commercial and a Baywatch parody ("Sexydangerwatch"). --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars Not my personal cup of tea, but I can understand why so many others enjoy this........2007-09-13

Personally, I don't like seeing unsuspecting people humiliated or embarrassed - so clearly this movie was not for me. That said, I did appreciate the moments where the humor was not at the expense of making another person look like an idiot.

If you're not sensitive to those issues as I am, I can really see how it's an enjoyable film. My mom, dad and brother really laughed their shorts off and most of my friends regularly quote it. I laughed too (I just happened to cringe more than I do at your standard hack and slash horror.) There are a lot of uncomfortable moments, so beware.

Undoubtedly, Sascha Baron Cohen is an incredible comedian and the team of writers and producers were not throwing together some hack piece of work here. Take your tastes into consideration when deciding to watch this. I didn't purchase this for myself, but my family enjoyed it, so it was worth it for them.

As far as re-watch ability, with all the hype and the Borat-wannabees quoting all the time, the DVD has sat on our shelf unwatched since it was originally opened. We're all a little Borat-ed Out. I expect however that in a few years when the Borat quoting completely fades away, it will be enjoyable again to those who enjoyed it in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars A Lot To Like & Dislike,.......2007-09-06

Where do you start in describing this movie? Well, for some adjectives I would begin with "Sleazy, irreverent, shocking, gross, biased, dry humor, dark humor, slapstick humor, profane, innocent, sad, sex-obsessed, hilarious, crude, outrageous, disgusting, insane, sexist, entertaining, weird, different, sex-obsessed, crazy, depressing, shocking, obscene, stereotypical, absurd, excessive, satiric, etc., etc.

I did find it generally funny and yes - shocking in parts - and was mostly entertained but there are some typical filmmakers' agendas in here, one of them that portrays America to be filled with mostly uncouth, stupid people and I hope the intelligent readers here from other parts of the globe don't buy into that. Also, to be honest, the sleazy material overwhelmed the humor and after an hour of watching - even though it was entertaining - I felt like I'd seen enough. I have to admit was surprised at the end that the real Pamela Anderson was in this.

Suffice to say the film is all you've heard about - good and bad - and probably more.

HI MY NAME IS BORAT AND YOU NEED TO BUY THIS MOVIE!!! ITS A GREAT MOVIE TO HAVE IN THE BOOK SHELVES!!

4 out of 5 stars Say "cheese".......2007-09-01

Why a review of Borat when so much has already been written?

Because what I have yet to see mentioned in any review is that Borat the character is an Elizabethan court jester magically transported to the twenty-first century. Historically, court jesters up to the Renaissance were typically midgets spouting vulgarities. (Freud touches on this aspect of the development and rise of European court jesters in his Totem and Taboo.) But as the intellectual life of European courts intensified during the Renaissance, court jesters became more and more sophisticated comic powerhouses of Shavian wit who furthermore enjoyed blanket protection from their royal patrons. You fiddled with the fool at your peril. Renaissance fools were the short-lived but brilliant apogee of centuries of court humor, slowly dying out as a protected class after the reign of Henry VIII.

This modern comedy reprises all that is best in Shakespearean comedy. In the Shakespearean plays, the fools are what ground us to our own humanity. They cut through the guff, no matter how much guff there is, seeing through and past (or somehow ignorant of) ossified social conventions of what's "normal" and "proper". They are, in other words, the proverbial "breath of fresh air" that makes us smile and laugh. Indeed, the general judgment of the Fool is he is the smart one; it is we who are the real fools. Shakespeare's fools range from the brilliant (King Lear's court jester), to the wisely witty (Feste in Twelfth Night) to the merely witty (Touchstone in As You Like It) to the cowardly (Sir John Falstaff) to the truly benighted (Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing). Clearly Borat is a modern Dogberry.

If there is a "law" in Shakespeare's plays, it centers around the Fool. As long as the Fool is with you, as long as society tolerates the Fool, you are safe and society is healthy (or at least retains some measure of health). A society that tolerates the Fool is a society with hope and humor and self-knowledge. When the Fool vanishes, there is nothing left to halt the spread of hypocrisy and destructiveness: In other words, political correctness. The Fool is the one we can always rely on to tell us, "The Emperor has no clothes". Because in the final analysis, the Fool embodies Truth. And Truth is sustenance to every human soul. Borat the Fool is benighted but kind, and does us all a very great service by reminding us - even in the twenty-first century - that "The Emperor has no clothes".

Awesome comedy.

When this movie was at the movie teathers I really wanted to see it but I didn't have time. There were a lot of comments about how good was this movie, so I had great expectations. But... all that I have seen in the DVD is a boring history with jokes stereotyping USA and countries from East Europe, showing only the worst part of very valuable and rich cultures.

Bill Murray does warmth in his most consistently effective post-Stripes comedy, a romantic fantasy about a wacky weatherman forced to relive one strange day over and over again, until he gets it right. Snowed in during a road-trip expedition to watch the famous groundhog encounter his shadow, Murray falls into a time warp that is never explained but pays off so richly that it doesn't need to be. The elaborate loop-the-loop plot structure cooked up by screenwriter Danny Rubin is crystal-clear every step of the way, but it's Murray's world-class reactive timing that makes the jokes explode, and we end up looking forward to each new variation. He squeezes all the available juice out of every scene. Without forcing the issue, he makes us understand why this fly-away personality responds so intensely to the radiant sanity of the TV producer played by Andie MacDowell. The blissfully clueless Chris Elliott (Cabin Boy) is Murray's nudnik cameraman. --David Chute

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but...think about it!.......2007-09-11

Don't get me wrong, I really like this movie. But think about the philosophical implications.

Here we have a man who has to go through the same day over and over. At 6 AM, everything in his life goes back to the way it was 24 hours ago.

But everything in the world is interconnected. So that means that every person in the world would have to relive the same day over and over. And every living thing--every animal and plant. And every object in the world, every atom in the world, would have to shift back to the way it had been. The Earth itself would have to go back to where it had been in its orbit.

Every single living being and every atom in the entire universe, and the entire universe itself, would have to revert back to the way it had been the day before, over and over again.

All so that this one man could learn to become a better person.

I mean, just how important is this guy, anyway?

4 out of 5 stars VERY FUNNY MOVIE.......2007-08-28

I THOUGHT THAT THIS MOVIE WAS VERY FUNNY BUT ALSO NERVE WRACKING. I WOULD HATE TO WAKE UP TO "I'VE GOT YOU BABE" EVERY MORNING, IT WOULD DRIVE ME CRAZY. BILL MURRAY IS VERY HILARIOUS AND IS VERY AGGRAVATED THAT HE WAKES UP EVERY MORNING AND REPEATS THE SAME THING EVERYDAY UNTIL HE FIGURES OUT WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO RIGHT TO CHANGE HIS DESTINY.

5 out of 5 stars a profound comic parable.......2007-08-24

I'd seen only bits and pieces of "Groundhog Day", and hadn't cared for it. Then I sat down yesterday and watched the whole thing.

I was flabbergasted. This is a movie about the way we piss away our lives, day by day, never improving our own lives or the lives of those around us.

Unhesitatingly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2007-08-23

Really just one of my favorite films. A clever metaphor for life, and how you can (or have to) live it one day at a time.

5 out of 5 stars A Groundhog Day worth reliving (and re-watching).......2007-08-15

Groundhog Day is based on what may be the oddest premise for a romantic comedy ever. A TV news weatherman (Bill Murray) goes to Punxatawnee, PA to cover Groundhog Day. The next day he wakes up and it is Groundhog Day again. No one remembers that this day has already passed and so he is forced to live it again. And the next day he wakes up and... it's Groundhog Day again. And again... and again... and again... and, well, you get the idea. Watching Murray's character go through this bizarre situation and the effect it has on him is absolutely riveting. I love that no attempt to explain this time-loop is ever made, it's enough for the viewer to know that it is happening and we don't need to get bogged down in some geeky sci fi explanation.

Bill Murray has a tendency to be a little too smug and over-the-top in his movie performances but he is at the top of his game here. His timing is perfect and the role harnesses his smug and biting humor but this is tempered as the story progresses and Murray captures the nuances perfectly. The rest of the cast similarly rises to the level of the unusually intelligent script. For my money, this is probably the single best movie in the "romantic comedy" genre. It is unique and perfectly executed. Well worth watching whether you are a fan of Bill Murray or not.

Sell Out begins with a version of "Bone Machine" compiled from reunion gigs the world over. It works surprisingly well--the Pixies are nothing if not consistent--although they sure look different from show to show. At some, Kim Deal and David Lovering have long hair. At others, hers is short and he has none. (Black Francis and Joey Santiago don't change as much.) What follows is a 25-song, two-encore set filmed under the stars at France's 2004 Eurockéennes Festival in front of an endless throng, followed by 15 bonus tracks from England, Scotland, Japan, and points across the US (Indio, CA, Austin, TX, and Lowell, MA). If the Pixies "sold out" when they reformed after more than a decade apart, no one can accuse them of sloth. Granted, most songs don't differ radically from their studio counterparts, but nor do they suffer in comparison. The strobe-lit "Tame" and epic "Vamos" are particularly boisterous highlights. At 43 tracks--33 unique compositions plus ten alternate takes--this digital document is admirably comprehensive (despite no interviews with or commentary from the band). Material from all four full-lengths, plus the Come On Pilgrim EP, gets a workout, including the "UK Surf" mix of "Wave of Mutilation" (the B-side featured in Pump Up the Volume). It's all here, with the exception of "Bam Thwok," their nifty comeback single. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

In 1992 the Pixies disbanded after releasing four acclaimed albums and one mini-album in a five-year period. The Pixies are widely regarded as one of the most important rock bands of the past 20 years-and influenced a new wave of alternative bands with their Quiet/Loud/Quiet song structure. Paraphrasing Kurt Cobain: "Nirvana would not have existed without the Pixies." Since the band split up, the leader, Black Francis, started a solo career as Frank Black, and Kim Deal, the bassist and vocalist, went on to form The Breeders. The band reunited in 2004 for a trimphant worldwide tour that saw the band playing better than ever, injecting the classic songs with renewed energy and universal critical response. The band's legacy and reputation has only grown stronger in the 12 years since they broke up, see her as the play in front of enthusiastic audiences, far larger than they had drawn in their heyday. Track Listings: Bone Machine, Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), In Heaven, Something Against You, River Euphrates, U-Mass, Bone Machine, Cactus, Ed Is Dead, I Bleed, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Hey, Levitate Me, Subbacultcha, Dead, Gouge Away, Velouria, Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones, Broken Face, Isla De Encanta, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Holiday, Song, Where Is My Mind?, Vamos, Wave of Mutilation, Gigantic.

2 out of 5 stars Too many camera cuts.......2007-09-08

I love the Pixies. The band sounds great. And the audio isn't too bad like some people are saying, but I didn't hear the original version so I can't compare it.

Worst thing about this video is the camera work. The director only stays on one camera for about a second, then cuts to another angle. This happens for the entire Video and it drives me CRAZY! I'd rather have one angle of a far shot of the entire band for the whole concert than these constant one second shots. The only break that your eyes get is in some of the extra's where a few of the songs have way better camera work, but not all of them.

That's why I am giving it two stars. The performance is good. The Pixies are great! The film crew stinks.

5 out of 5 stars Pixies Sold Out........2007-03-21

This is a wonderful DVD. Seeing as Pixies broke up quite a while ago and there is not a reunion tour in the works at this moment (pray, pray, pray...) there is a decent chance that I will never be able to see them perform live. This is as close as it gets for me, and it's just something I loved to see. The concert itself is not the best, as it's a festival show, outdoors, and is just in a kind of lame setting, and there's the "new" versions of their older stuff, like Vamos, which is just, for lack of a better term, god-awful in its slowed-down form. The other complaint I have about this is that Frank Black, Kim Deal, and Joey Santiago do very little onstage. They just stand there and sing, and occasionally drink (though you do see that Kim Deal is quite skilled at smoking while playing bass), and if you're not into that, than this goes a long way towards becoming a rating-- it's not PG. Otherwise, it's Pixies, and that's precisely the reason I bought this in the first place.

4 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2007-01-03

An excellent concert DVD; but if you're a Pixies fan you don't really need to be sold on it, and if you're not, you should hit the albums first. Also worth checking out: LoudQUIETLoud, the documentary taken over the reunion tour.

4 out of 5 stars Jump around.......2006-12-28

I don't know why I wanted the Pixies to jump around on stage while I watched them perform most of their best songs. I guess I expected a live performance, and . . . that's what I got - but the Pixies just stand there and sing.

I was pretty happy to hear "Ed is Dead". The entire audience began to sing with the group. That's what I was looking for -- more audience participation and . . . well, people jumping around.

If you were a Pixies fan back in the day, you'll love this DVD. If you're new to the Pixies, try and keep an open mind. The songs are awesome. Close your eyes and listen. There are over 26 songs to listen to. Plus it's nice to see the band after they broke up in 1992. 4 stars!!!

2 out of 5 stars Pixies are great, but this DVD has sub-par audio..........2006-08-26

Great DVD in general, but the mastering of the audio leaves a lot to be desired. Basically, the sound is too flat in both stereo and 5.1, and the 5.1 mix is really heavy on the right channel (sounds unbalanced).

Most of the footage from this DVD comes from the Eurockennes de Belfort festival. Of which I have an unofficial copy (it was broadcast over digital TV in Europe, a friend recorded it, made a DVD and sent the uncompressed original to me).

Let me say that the broadcast version of this show is *vastly* superior to what is found on this DVD. Which leaves me disappointed and wondering what the fark Rhino Home Video was doing when they mastered this DVD. It's not terrible per se (it is the Pixies after all), but when I know that there is source material out there that is better I simply cannot give this a good rating. They should have put the original audio source on this DVD instead of doing whatever they did to make the audio sound muffled.

I'm actually going to write to Rhino and inquire why the audio on this DVD is so awful.

3 out of 5 stars If you like old flicks - one is a really good bad movie.......2005-09-01

I am refering to Hangmen - apparently Sandra Bullock's screen debut. My jaw dropped and soon I was rolling on the carpet in spasms. So much silly dialogue and unexplained action are the very essence of a good bad movie. The directing and the photography are acually quite good and show New York at its grittiest. Sandra Bullock gets shot with a kind of a tranquilizer bullet - you know, the ones they use on enraged rhinos in wildlife parks. No, really, I can honestly recommend that one. The rest: forgettable (The Inside Man), truly annoying (The Sell Out).

2 out of 5 stars 1 good movie & 2 fair ones.......2004-02-07

The Sell Out is the best of these 3. Good acting by Richard Widmark. For the other two movies, Inside man would be second best and kept my interest well enough. Hangmen though is a different story. Too much gunplay & people getting killed. I only sat through it for the Sandra Bullock parts since this was her very first movie. She was good & the rest of the picture was so so.

Expect the picture quality to be slightly soft (like VHS) due to the compression needed to put 3 movies on one DVD. The sound on all 3 is mono plus the movies are all full screen format.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars 'Twas only a payday for Widmark........2005-04-27

In this work filmed entirely in Israel, Richard Widmark gamely portrays Sam Lucas, a "retired" CIA operative who discovers that he is involuntarily back in action due to the sudden urging of his former initiate Gabriel Lee (Oliver Reed) who has been turned by the Soviet Union and now wants to come back into the American fold, not realizing that both players in the game have sent assassins to Israel to eliminate him, and Lucas as well. The direction is flabby with undue emphasis being placed upon silly and, naturally, superfluous stunts and car chases, with an inappropriate free hand being given to Gayle Hunnicut, playing the wife of Lucas and former lover of Lee, whose melodramatism proves distortive for what should be the critical scenes in this leaden affair, while the pudgy Englishman Reed, ill-advised to strip to the waist, has his lines dubbed in order to present an acceptable American accent.

5 out of 5 stars The Sell Out.......2003-10-23

This version from Westlake Entertainment is probably the best in the market.

Digital quality, lot of action and extras.

      1 out of 5 stars the pits!.......2004-04-09

I gave up trying to figure out what was happening in this dimly lit, barely watchable exercise in lunacy. David keith portrays a psychopathic killer who returns from the dead. Can you guess what he does? Yeah, you're right. he goes right after those old mean people who were responsible for putting out his lights. I think I've seen this plot device since the days of Lon Chaney silents. At least from a couple of hundred Boris Karloff back-from-the-dead B movies. Nothing makes any sense. the characters are so repulsive and slimy--even the victims--that you care for none of them. this flick is only for those who are desperate.
