4 out of 5 stars The way it was meant to see.......2007-08-21

I'm so glad this flick came out on Blu ray disc. The picture is better than ever and it's mixed in 5.1 surround. A masterpiece in it's own right, Bruce Lee delivers his most personal film. Loaded with bonus features(over 3.5 hours worth). This film deserves repeated viewings and the bonus material is actually worth watching. Well worth the price of admission!

4 out of 5 stars Bruce Li makes the film his own.......2007-08-21

Although the movie is dated due to technology and the standard story, Bruce Li always makes the film fun to watch. The extras on the dvd make the blu-ray version worth the money. If you are a fan of Bruce Li you must get this dvd, and the picture quality is great for big screens.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee at his best.......2007-08-08

I have to say that this is the best looking version of Enter the Dragon available. Picture quality is great looking and is probably good as its going to get. Just don't expect this movie to look as crystal clear as the newer movies. Enter the Dragon is a 34 year old movie so don't demand High definition perfection. Sound quality is very nice with a noticeable improvement over the standard DVD. I am a big Bruce Lee fan and Enter the Dragon along with the many special features included in this Blu-ray DVD are a true treasure. There are interviews with Bruce, film footage from "Game of Death", and many other interesting features. Even though Enter the Dragon is a 34 year old movie its still better than the current action films of today. Had Bruce Lee lived I believe he would still be making great movies today. If you own a Blu-ray player or your a fan of Bruce Lee buy this movie today. May you rest in peace Bruce knowing that your family, friends, many devoted students, and fans miss you everyday.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing how good it looks.......2007-08-03

I recently watched Enter The Dragon on the Voom HD Kung-Fu network, and it looked relatively good, but not great.

The Blu-Ray version obviously got a lot more attention, care, and cleanup. It is by far the best looking and sounding version I've ever seen of the movie. It sounds like the bass was tweaked quite a bit, because whenever Bruce would hit one of his signature punches, my subwoofer put out one heck of a thump. It sounded great, if not a little over the top.

Some of the signature grain of the original is still there, but the images are much more crisp and sharp than any other version.

Definitely worth it for the Bruce Lee fans out there.

5 out of 5 stars Boards do not hit back!.......2007-06-27

This was a true treat! I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan and this is the best I've ever seen him! Blu-Ray HD truly did this timeless classic justice!

The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong coproduction, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to Dr. No) is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class martial artists puts this film in a category well above Lee's primitive Hong Kong productions. Unfortunately he's off the screen for large chunks of time as American maverick competitors (and champion martial artists) John Saxon and Jim Kelly take center stage, but once the fighting starts Lee takes over. The tournament setting provides an ample display of martial arts mastery of many styles and climaxes with a huge free-for-all, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted Han in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Lee narrows his eyes and tenses into a wiry force of sinew, speed, and ruthless determination. --Sean Axmaker

Product Description

Kung Fu expert Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a martial arts master who arrives in Hong Kong to compete in the Kumite, a violent championship fighting contest.
Running Time: 92 min.

Format: DVD MOVIE

Amazon.com

A well-oiled Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in what may be one of the few kickboxing films to be based on a true story. The Muscles from Brussels plays Frank Dux, the first Westerner ever to win the extreme "whupfest" known as the Kumatai (a long-running, no-holds-barred fighting tournament in Hong Kong). While a bit deficient in the script department (to say the least), this undeniably exciting flick succeeds by letting Van Damme play to his strengths: namely, minimal acting and a lot of impossibly acrobatic splits while kicking people in the head. A guilty-pleasure testosterone blast of the highest order, with a memorable villain (the massive Bolo Yeung from Enter the Dragon), and a multitude of well-choreographed fight scenes. An embarrassed-looking Forest Whitaker cameos as a hapless (and non-kickboxing) cop. --Andrew Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Does It Hurt Van Damme?.......2007-09-06

Hello B fans, Sid the Elf is back to review Bloodsport. We mean this in the straightest way possible when we say that the most impressive thing in the movie was when Van Damme does the splits. No, actually, this film was wonderful. We picked it on the spur of the moment and it didn't disappoint. It had everything we could ask for. There was horrific acting from everybody involved. This even includes Forrest Whittiker from 35,622 buckets of fried chicken ago. You have Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first starring role and he hit this one out of the park on the first try. Although we're not quite sure why they chose a local special needs fry chef to play the young Frank Dux, but it was more than made up for when we heard the kid talk and saw him get kicked in the chest by the little Chineese kid. Then you had Ray Jackson, the big cross-eyed guy, who was nothing short of hillarious. Finally, there was the one, the only Chong-Li. Here you had a jacked, utterly insane Korean who instead of pounding hot dogs like Kobyashi, ate 34 egg white ommelettes in 8 minutes while training for the kumate. He just has a presence. When the screen showed his name opposite Ray Jackson's Sid the Elf froze. It was momentous.

As we, Sid the Elf, like to do when there's just too much to go over, we'll break this one down Joe Bob style and let you use it as a guide when you watch Bloodsport. Here are the Drive-In totals:

3 bricks broken, 1 with a head-butt

1 compound leg fracture

2 tazerings

1 skinny Forrest Whitiker falling off a boat

1 partially nude Van Damme

1 pair of red bikini briefs worn by the Muscles from Brussels

1 Mr. Fuji style eye salting

56 hilarious facial expressions

1 ref beating courtesy of Chong-Li

1 homicide in the ring

32 crushed beer cans by Ray "ABC 123" Jackson

1 Van Damme Flock of Seagulls hair do

4 inappropriately placed romantic songs from the soundtrack

Definitely 5 stars. Partially for the terribly done fighting scenes. I mean, most of those blows could be stopped by Cecila Dux, Frank's grandmother. Easy recipient of the Sid the Elf Seal of Approval. I have put all my knowledge into you. Watch Bloodsport!

5 out of 5 stars Bloodsport starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.......2007-08-13

This is what the good ole martial arts films were made of. This was one of the originators and definitely one of Van Dammes BEST movies to date. Original in concept and plot, it is based on a true story. Honor, Glory, and the Kumite. Nuff Said! Van Damme this is a good movie!

5 out of 5 stars THE best martial arts movie EVER !!!.......2007-01-02

What else could you expect from the belgian's... buy hey, jean-claude, at the premiere of cyborg you let me and my cousin in the rain. You were stuck in brussels... so, i'll still owe you a signed poster ;)

This movie is what it's all about, off course, bruce lee was widely known. But this one is trully magnificent... the story is based on a true-story, the movements are very very athletic and beautifull... to make it short...

THIS MOVIE HAS IT ALL !!!

More from this please instead of such stupid movies were chinese men make 7 flips in once while throwing some stars on top off a bus for example...

This movie let's you see what it really is... ART !!!

5 out of 5 stars Bloodsport is my favorite Van Damme movie.......2006-12-07

In the movie Bloodsport, Jean-Claude Van Damme and the other actors do a fantastic job playing their roles. Van Damme became a big celebrity after starring in this film. It's inspiring to see him train and fight. It amazes me on how he's super flexible and is in great condition. The statement Frank's shedoshi said, "It brings mind, body, and spirit together" is the truth. It makes me think to myself, "You can do anything if you put your mind to it."

Set to a beguiling reggae beat, Life and Debt takes as its subject Jamaica's economic decline in the 20th century. The story has reverberations in the plight of other third-world nations blindsided by globalization, like Ghana and Haiti. After England granted Jamaica independence in 1962, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) stepped in with a series of loans. These loans came with strings attached--the kind that would eventually plunge the country $7 billion into debt, stranded without the resources to dig themselves out. Although IMF officials get the chance to have their say, it's clear where filmmaker Stephanie Black's sympathies lie--with the country's underemployed farmers and sweatshop workers. Jamaica Kinkaid (A Small Place) penned the narration, while the soundtrack features some of the "imports" with which this island nation remains mostly closely associated: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Mutabaruka, who performs the title track. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Topic, But a Superficial Movie.......2007-07-31

There's a great documentary to made about the impact of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank on the Third World. Unfortunately, this isn't it. While many documentaries are one-sided, Black doesn't seem to have understood the possible responses to her apparent position well enough even to bother making a case against them. The strength of her argument suffers as a result. (An example: farmers complain about the high nominal interest rates of their loans, but the rates actually seem extremely reasonable given Jamaica's high inflation rate.) Nevertheless, the film may be worth watching simply to hear the perspectives of native Jamaicans, especially the interview with former Prime Minister Michael Manley (presented more fully in the bonus section of the DVD). Listening to the director's commentary may also provide valuable information that might have been better included in the movie, in place of the poetic-but-unpersuasive narration.

5 out of 5 stars a powerful prerequisite for anyone planning a trip to Jamaica (or anyone else, for that matter!).......2007-05-29

LIFE & DEBT, a brilliant documentary by Stephanie Black, takes a cautionary look at the bleak state of the small island nation of Jamaica. Based on a piece written by Antigua-bred writer, Jamaica Kincaid, this film is beautifully narrated by Belinda Becker. What's more, it is greatly benefited by an evocative musical score that includes such musicians as Ziggy Marley, along with an original score by Mutabaruka. The story juxtaposes news reels, candid interview with farmers, former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley, Deputy Director of the IMF Stanley Fisher, and President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide (among others), as well as very graphic and honest footage of Jamaican slum life. You can almost smell the rot coming from the garbage dumps children and families must live close to, on a daily basis, because they simply have no other choice.

LIFE & DEBT takes a very sobering look at the effect of twenty-five years of assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), what resulted from this relationship (including the increasing weakening of Jamaican currency, in favor of the American dollar and an increasing struggle for local farmers, as more and more imported produce found its way onto the shelves and into the bellies of Jamaicans and tourists to Jamaica). Throughout the story, we hear "If you come to Jamaica as a tourist, this is what you will see..." LIFE & DEBT makes an especially strong appeal to anyone who arrives in the island nation, and the way in which people tend to appropriate the beauty of a culture (beaches, corn-rowed hairstyles and local food), while turning a blind eye to the stark reality of those who must survive from day to day. The narrator paints the picture of a "typical" tourist. This person is a wealthy American who has the means to come and go from Jamaica, sees the rolling beaches, delicious local cuisine and warm weather. They also see the Jamaican natives, and imagine their life to be quite laid back and worry free. However, the reality is quite the opposite, since most of the poor subsist on less than the equivalent of one American dollar (once numerous taxes take a considerable bite out of their paycheck).

This film is beautiful, on so many levels. Stephanie Black made a bold and beautiful choice in the direction she took with her cinematography. The combination of beautiful and colorful footage of sunsets, and gorgeous flora and fauna, along with black and white montages (to depict the colonialized "past" in contrast with present day Jamaica) was really powerful. What's more, this is the first time I have seen someone respectfully acknowledging the great detrimental effect the WTO (World Trade Organization) and IMF (International Monetary Fund) has had on smaller, greatly disadvantaged nations that have been wrongfully exploited. I commend Stephanie Black for having the guts to bring LIFE & DEBT to the screen. It is as powerful today as it was when it was originally released in 2001.

5 out of 5 stars Another Shame of the American Power Structure.......2007-05-13

Basically, "Life and Debt" concerns the World Bank's, International Monetary Fund's, and other entities' involvement in the economics of Jamaica's and other former colonial nations' ecenomics. Whatever side of the fence you're on concerning America's meddling and stranglehold on other nations, this film is worth watching. It is truly an eye-opener and will hopefully allow you to form an informed opinion.

5 out of 5 stars great documentry.......2007-03-09

i watched this documentry in my urban sociology class. at the end of the semester what my professor said was to go out in the real world and let people know what i have learned. it was pretty inspiring. i bought this movie and showed it to my friends and family. it is extremely realistic and depicts what happened to this beautiful caribbean country. thanks to usa. everyone should watch it especially if you are an american or you live in america. guess american have something to be really proud of. and by the way my professor is an american, a white male.

3 out of 5 stars Worth seeing but..........2007-02-25

In watching this one sided documentary you can't help but be impressed with the excellent quality of the cinematography, the sound track and the touching way individuals speak about the effect that the governments policies have had on their lives. By constantly editing back and forth from local poverty and riots to white tourists enjoying the natural splendor of Jamaica with all the comforts of home, the director establishes a powerful separation of wealth and class. It makes you feel that these tourists are part of the problem and how dare they enjoy their vacation while there are social injustices and poverty that needs to be dealt with in Jamaica. Although a very effective editing tool, it is an unfair use of tourism as tourism is one of the bright lights of the Jamaican economy and is responsible for an ever increasing percentage of the total economy.

The film further goes on to blame the plight of impoverished Jamaicans on the International Monetary Fund, the USA and on big business through the use of interviews with local farmers and factory workers that have been dramatically impacted by the policies that the Jamaican government imposed to get IMF help and foreign investment. The clear message of the film is that the IMF and large corporations are at fault for destroying paradise in the name of greed and globalization, however, I can't help but feel that this would be a more convincing film if they had explored the role of the Jamaican government and the policies that led up to the need for outside investment and loans. Ultimately the Jamaican government made the decision to get in bed with the IMF and this film leaves me with the one question of why?

Jean-Claude Van Damme gets a kick out of himself in this clever if barely competent action thriller, in which the likable Muscles from Brussels plays twin brothers separated at birth by a murderous Hong Kong crime syndicate. While the genial Chad lives the posh life as a California aerobics instructor, his sibling Alex chews fat cigars back in China, running a mahjong parlor and making some extra bucks as a smuggler. A quarter-century after being sent to different corners of the globe, they reunite and decide to seek vengeance against the cartel that killed their parents. From there the story and action set pieces are fairly predictable, but that hardly matters since the film's real appeal is in the amusing way the two Van Dammes deal with sibling rivalry, especially where women are concerned. Van Damme, seeking his box-office breakthrough at the time, might have received more of a commercial boost had this movie simply been directed with greater professionalism. The lighting, editing, and shot selection are often ridiculously below the standard of low-budget features. But Double Impact does have its compensations, especially in the casting of leather-clad Cory Everson and exemplary villain Bolo Yeung as a pair of killers who cross the twins' path. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Double Dynamite!.......2007-07-07

This is not necessarily my favorite genre of film, but I must say that it is a VERY impressive entertaining film. Jean-Claude Van Damme is SO believable as twin brothers that it is so easy to think that Van Damme has a twin in real life starring in a movie with him.
The martial arts and action is great, as well as a very unique storyline.
I especially enjoyed the (always) great Geoffery Lewis in this. He is a perfect casting choice as the body guard of the twins' late parents, then years later as a friend/partner/protector of the adult twins.
I've never even been a big fan of Van Damme's, but he is great in this. And, as two completely different people! It's very well scripted and very well directed, and the acting is very well done by everyone in the film.
The story is that, as imfants, the baby brothers are orphaned when their parents are murdered by a Chinese businessman and his American associate. Years later, the boys are now grown men, living completely seperate lives, unaware that the other exists until Geoffery Lewis' character brings them together to exact revenge on the people who murdered their parents, and to take back what is rightfully theirs.
This is a film I would highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of this genre of film, and/or anyone who just wants to sit back, eat some popcorn and enjoy some great kick a** action and some awesome martial arts. This is definetly in the same league as any Bruce Lee flick, or any Jackie Chan film, if not better. It has all of the ingredients that this genre of film calls for: Action, adventure, martial arts fighting, murder, betrayal, double crossing, double dealing, revenge, and double Van Damme.
Not a movie that I would own, but one I would highly recommend. My only complaint was there were way too many head-butting scenes. Other than that, well, let's just say that this is a rare gem for the fans of martial arts/action films. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE FOR SHORE.......2007-05-08

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY

4 out of 5 stars should have done a doublemint twin commercial too.......2007-01-15

There are several reasons why this film is one of my fav Van Damme films ever, and 2 twin brothers played by Van Damme is just part of the reason. Double Impact also gives us a decent plot and some great baddies, including everyone's favorite "Bolo Young" who has played the villain in numerous films such as Bloodsport, Enter The Dragon, Breathing Fire and Tiger Claws to name a few.

Van Damme's two roles are identical twin brothers by appearance, yet completely opposite by personality. The one brother, Chad, has been raised in France & California, and looks like the Zack Morris of muscles. The o ther brother, Alex, is definetly the much cooler of the two, with a touch of bad guy in himself and much cooler talkin. The interaction between these two are fun to watch, and probably had some success in the film, since "Replicant" was made several years later, also starring 2 Van Damme's with opposite personalities.

Bolo Young fans may want this movie just for him. While he barely has any lines, if any (and he never does in any films), he's just a dirty guy in this flick. With a nasty facial scar and dressed in the bad guy black suit, his presence is known, leading up to final fight with the Zack Morris Van Damme. The fight is short, but sweet. Yes, we get to see his ridiculousy crazy pecks in action.

The rest of the movie is not bad, but nothing spectacular. For a B-movie, this is one of the better one's The acting is so-so and the script is eh. Directing, ediitng, lighting could have been better but thats what you get with a lower budget film. I think Van Damme fans will still be very pleased, and no doubt this is one of his more enjoyable films. Stay away from anything made after 2000 if you want great classic Van Damme, the earlier films are where its at, and Double Impact is a great choice.

5 out of 5 stars One Damme Good Movie.......2006-05-19

This movie to me is a golden classic. You have one brother (Chad) a ladies guy that uses his martial arts to fight and the other brother (Alex) street [...] that uses guns and martial arts. Bother brothers played by Van Damme. I love this movie, probally my favorite Van Damme movie. Anyway The mother and Father are murdered and the twins are seperated. After years they finally come together to seek revenge on those who murdered their parents.

3 out of 5 stars not the best.......2006-04-06

Usually Jean-Claude's films are excellent (except for Street Fighter)but there was something missing from this film. Its not that bad but not the best.I hope he gets back on his feet.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good - A Must Have Classic.......2007-08-26

I used to hate kung fu movies as a kid, but years later after having never seen this film, I must say I was thoroughly entertained! The story really drives this film (in it's originality) and the actors are all truly amazing; great heroes, great villains and a deadly tournament!

The extras on this disc are numerous and make for quite a tribute to Mr. Lee, and the Lee legacy. The transfer is astonishing for its age (I love how grand it feels as the airplane flies overhead in the opening - as only HD can present) the soundtrack is very nice...a little action, a little orient and a little funk!

Mr. Hans hands are a bit cheesy and unmenacing, but I imagine that if they were aware of what a masterpiece they were creating they surely would have put forth a little more effort in some of these minor details, but in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.

"Enter the Dragon" on HD DVD is an excellent way to take a look at the past when you're feeling nostalgic with all of its outdoor imagery from a variety of locations - this film has some wonderful shots. It's also a nice way to just have a good time when you're in the mood for a classic action movie!

I love this film and have viewed it multiple times. I can't say enough good things about it, and it truly is a shame that Mr. Lee didn't live long enough to add a few more of these gems to Hollywood history - he really was an amazing talent.

I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars Just like when I saw it in the big theater brand new!.......2007-07-28

Watching this historical film in HD-DVD is amazing! The colors pop, the clarity is magnificent! I saw this film several times as a teenager in the movie theaters when it first came out. I've bought it on VHS and later on DVD over the years. But it never had the impact it did on the big screen from actual FILM. But this copy is amazing, it recaptures the genuine magic the film had on the big screen. If you're a Bruce Lee fan, you HAVE to get this HD-DVD! The extras are also pretty spectacular. Brenda's interview clips are very nice, especially since they were done for this HD-DVD, and are not simply repeats of other interviews us fans have already seen a million times. She gives new info I didn't know, and I'm the biggest Bruce Lee fan on the planet!

5 out of 5 stars Matial Arts Fan - You Gotta See This.......2007-05-07

I have been a martial arts fan forever and have owned a variety of copies of this movie - including just about every special edition sold. I was skeptical of buying the HD version because some of the prior "special remastered" versions retained the grainy nature of the original videotape versions and to be honest - I assumed it was grainy on the master copy and so not something that could be fixed. I could not have been more wrong.

I don't care if you have seen this movie 1,000 times, watching it on HD is like seeing it for the first time. Some of the costumes that always looked black in other versions are proven to dark navy or dark brown - WOW.

The detail in this verion is amazing and none of the earlier recurring graininess is present. You can debate whether the film is outdated - but let's face it, the basic plot of this movie has been copied so many times that people coming to this for the first time will think it is just following the old martial arts movie format - NOT TRUE - this movie set the format and everyone else has been copying it ever sense.

If you enjoy martial arts movies, this version of Enter the Dragon is a must own.

5 out of 5 stars " A Must Have" for the Bruce Lee fan.......2007-02-07

I was not disappointed at all with the transfer of this classic to hd-dvd. I was very impressed with the color and crispness and the audio surprised me as well! This is a must have for the die-hard Bruce Lee fan and a casual fan of the genre will not be disappointed as well. A huge Bruce Lee fan all my life i can't wait for the release of his other movies in hd-dvd or blu-ray.

5 out of 5 stars Super Feature Packed, Must Have.......2007-01-05

There is not a single HD DVD on the market with as many comentaries and featurettes as this movie. It will take you several evenings to finish it all. If you are even slightly interested in documentaries or history, you will find much of the additional material interesting, especially the interview with Bruce's Wife.

The HD transfer is very good. Considerable time was spent removing film artifacts and making sure the colors were bright and rich. This is how HD DVD should be. Due to the very poor soundtrack from the original movie, the 5.1 mix is mediocre. However, it is to be expected, and does not take away from the HD film experience.

Overall, if you have found your way to this Movie's page on Amazon, then you are probably interested enough for this HD DVD movie to be a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only!!!.......2007-03-25

This film is one of the best old skool kung fu flicks ever. But maybe I feel this way about the film because it was the first Shaw Brothers film, hell the first kung fu film i had ever seen. After seeing it, a lifelong love for this sub-genere of movies was born. I must set the record strait and say emphatically that it IS one of the 5 best old skool flicks. The print of this film is presented in a beautiful widescreen format with vibrant color and crystal clear imagery. It is also well dubbed and the story, though simplistic, is neither typical or uninspired. Don't be fooled by the "kung fu snobs" who will tell you that this is just a so-so flick, or that you need to buy a foreign import DVD to "truely enjoy it". This film is the "one and only".

4 out of 5 stars Classic Martial Arts 70's style!.......2007-01-16

Can't beat it. Honor your teacher, honor your school then honor your woman to be...

5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu Classic.......2007-01-10

This was the film that got me interested in Kung Fu films. It was as good as I remembered and I would pit it against some of the films made in recent times.

4 out of 5 stars A great classic of the genre.......2006-11-26

This may have been the first Kung Fu movie I saw. It made a big impression on me at the time. While the martial arts are stagy and the music swiped from American movies and TV (Ironside and Diamonds are Forever) it is a seminal film for it's clever script.

Unlike the hackneyed plots of other such films, this movie throws some real curve balls at you. It also has a delicious villain who is much more clever than we're used to seeing in these movies. Even to this day I find some of the stuff he does disturbing, and I'm pretty jaded at this point. It's all in the nature of his underhanded methods.

The transfer on this DVD isn't that good. But this is an important film in the Kung Fu canon and should not be missed. It's also one of the many influences on Kill Bill 1. Notice the Ironside music and smash zoom close ups in that movie area direct swipe from 5 Fingers of Death.

5 out of 5 stars a woman's slant on this movie.......2006-10-16

I was surprised to see some reviewers give this movie a lukewarm rating--not for the fighting as much as for the movie's plot. I've seen maybe 12 martial arts fliks--fewer than many reviewers, so maybe I'm a bit green. But I thought the plot was FASCINATING, and the acting outstanding. Although the plot features very typical outcomes for the good and the bad guys, and predictable subplots (like the hero's faithfulness to his first girl back home in the little village in spite of the very hot but proper second girl who tempts him),the magic is in the details--we can guess that A will lead to B, but HOW THIS MOVIE GETS FROM A TO B is VERY WELL CRAFTED. As for the acting, the hero truly manages to be subtle at the same time that he is passionate. He shows a nice mix of the old-fashioned vs. the flashy (though still understated) hero. I loved the clever switch from his playing the role of submissive reserved student who crawls out of the bar after being humiliated by the newly arrived fearsome bad guy one day, to his return the next day to the bar in an oustandingly heroic and funny payback scene. The women were stereotyped, but managed to play their roles with that sexy Asian girl grace, and with a sweetness that didn't seem overdone. As for the fighting? Who am I to say, but my eyes feasted. There was always a nice balance between the fighters so that it wasn't obvious till the very end who would win. And the transitions from one fighting scene to the next in the last half hour were done so well, and with such surprising plot twists and drama that I was on the edge of my seat!

With the names of Peking Opera pals and frequent costars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao headlining this action comedy, one would reasonably expect another kung-fu-teer team-up, and the bang-up opening does nothing to contradict that. The picture jumps out of the gate with Hong Kong cops Chan and Biao undercover in Japan, chasing a supercriminal into an amusement park where an army of hooded, sword-wielding ninjas erupt from the crowd and take on our heroes in a wild attack. Biao is kidnapped, Chan goes underground, and that's the last we see of either of them for quite some time as Sammo Hung and his gang of con-man cronies and petty-thief pals take over the film when they are recruited to infiltrate the criminal empire known as the Scarecrow Club. The middle of the picture suffers from the worst kind of juvenile sexual horseplay as the five hormonally charged misfits try to make time with their beautiful police liaison Sibelle Hu, only returning to adrenaline-charged action in the free-for-all finale. Chan is relegated to guest-star status and Biao has no better than a cameo (those looking for the trio in action together should check out Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever), but director-star Hung delivers inventively choreographed martial arts mayhem when he's not mired in groaning bathroom humor. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-02

Im a spoiled fan of Chan in Western flicks, and was expecting more of the same. Wrong. The characters and plot were sophomoric and mostly a clumsy attempt at Three-Stooges type comedy. Example - when not in their black "uniform," the scowling bad Ninjas appear in 50's style zoot-suits and broad-brimmed hats (except the sexy female baddie). The two main fight scenes (very early, and at the end) totaled about 10-15" and were classic Chan. Otherwise, a much better investment of time and bucks is Li's "Fearless."

3 out of 5 stars Another Sammo movie with the same actors.......2006-09-23

This movie is just like Winners and Sinners and it is actually sort of a sequel. In Winners and Sinners Yuen Biao has about 30 seconds of screen time and has a good fight in his extremely limited role. He is in this one for maybe 3 minutes and somehow seems to fight even less!

Curly gets replaced by a stupid little kid type of character but as stupid as he looks, Sammo manages to make all of the characters pretty likeable. Charlie Chin(On the Run) had a great scheme in Winners and Sinners where he would go into a jewerly store, ask to see a diamond ring, go up to a random person, act like the person is their friend, go to shake their hand but really put a fake gun in their hand, and right as he gives the person the gun it goes off and he has blood packets ready and runs off out of the store with the diamond ring acting like he really got shot. I never got enough of that gag! Well Sammo certainly can't top that but all of the characters are just as enjoyable as Winners.

So the story is not really that important. Muscles(Jackie Chan) and Yuen Biao are looking for this defective cop at the start of the movie and Biao ends up being kidnapped(Don't worry, you see him again 80 minutes later). So Jackie says he needs his fat friend(Sammo) to help him on this mission of getting his friend back and also getting back contraband diamonds. Sammo says he needs his friends to come with and he will be mroe than happy to help. Next we get a very nice looking woman to work with them and the boys get to play games with her for the next 30 minutes. Finally at the end Jackie meets back up with Sammo and we get a great final fight. THERE IS NO ACTION IN THIS MOVIE UNTIL THE FINAL FIGHT!! We get a punch or two from Jackie and Yuen Biao at the start but literally nothing else until the end! And what an end it was. Jackie vs. DIck Wei, an AWESOME chick fight, and of course with Sammo as the main star of the movie, he gets some of his best fight scenes ever.

Sammo's jokes are sort of hit and miss just like in Winners and Sinners but when they are pulled off it is guaranteed you will be laughing for a while.

4 out of 5 stars this it a realy good movie (Who cares about Kang Jack Sang?).......2005-01-29

I this is a very good movie written by Sammo Hung I must say this it is a very childish movie! As it was was made to be this is the considerd the second movie in the very long series that just continues. actully the series borrows from Winners and sinners(considerd to be the first) but isn't also Pom Pom borrows from winners and sinners. Most of this movie is about nothing but jokes about grooping and rapeing women. I dont want to say too much about this movie becuase I want you to watch it but first one must watch winners and sinners. Kang Jack sang is only in the first 3 movies a little sammo comes in and out from time to time after the first three but it is a stupid movie and if you dont like those dont watch the movie but I love sammo hung he is a great actor and writer he just never got as huge as Kang Jack Sang(Jakie Chan) Becuase he likes to share the spot light and isnt as selfcentered as Kang Jack Sang.

Richard eing funny funny man
Yuen Baio great stunt guy and actor I think never got famious but needs a hand used to do a lot of Kang Jack sang's (JACKIE CHAN'S) stunts ALL THE TIME but never got the credit.

I like some of Kang Jack Sang's movies but I don't respect him as a person

4 out of 5 stars A good movie, but not Chan's best........2004-05-08

This is a great movie, and it has a wonderful plot. The humor is dead-on, and I really enjoyed the action in it. Might not be one of the movies you watch to see just Jackie, but it's wonderful to see Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao (though he's not in it very much) and Jackie Chan working together. The acting is good, and it's great to watch in subtitles or voice-over. I'd suggest anyone who's a fan of Jackie Chan or of Chinese import action-comedy movies to buy this movie. 3 out of 5 stars Brandon Lee in a Hong Kong action movie.......2006-08-02

Now while The Crow has been the only worthwhile Brandon Lee movie I have watched, this is certainly # 2. It doesn't really stand out with anything special and is just your average crime drama. But with Ronny Yu at the helm and Bruce Lee's son as the star, he was going to try to make the best action movie ever. It is a decent story and well told, but like I said, nothing really happens. So you may like this if you like seeing a lot of cars blown up and quick one punch and it's over with fights. If you wanna see Brandon Lee playing one of his best roles, this is a must see.

Sound quality and widescreen(16:9) picture is pretty good. No special features though.

3 out of 5 stars for HK style action fans and Brandon Lee fans only.......2006-01-02

too depressing. It got me depressed watching Brandon in prison for most of the movie. You have to watch him scrub tiolets and it made me feel sad for Brandon. The gunplay in the movie is so ridiculous that it becomes unbelievable. In some scenes there's five or more guys with machine guns shooting at Brandon and his friend and they can't hit him or his friend from twenty feet away. This is in contrast to his later movies such as 'Rapid Fire' which isn't so insanely done. Only a gun fanatical teenager might enjoy this. For Brandon Lee fans this is well worth having in your action collection, though. Because the movie was made in Asia, the action is way more violent than what I've seen in US films. Although it's very nice to see Brandon bust loose physically when he does. It's just does he have to be in prison for so long? It was a little too sad.
*spoiler alert* don't read below if you haven't seen the movie
another thing that was sad was how he is separated from his girlfrined for 8 long years, she gets beaten when he's in prison, he gets out and then gets a job as a garbage man, and then his girlfriend is dead and his reaction is not even to go over to the body but just jump in an expensive speedboat and take off. The movie was very cold and mean.

Legacy Of Rage is a wonderful action thriller with great storytelling and character development, emotionally captivating actors and actresses, a cool sountrack, and explosive gun battles and few but very brutal non-stylistic, white-knuckle fight sequences choregraphed and starring Mang Hoi, and featuring the late-great Brandon Lee who showed such wonderful potential for HK (and perhaps US) action hero stardom.

So buy it already!

5 out of 5 stars Great HK underground movie.......2005-07-21

Legacy of Rage is a good HK action movie with some noteable action scenes and a good score. The movie is clearly dominated by two men. The well-known director Ronny Yu (Yu Yan Tai) who did a great job with Legacy of Rage, some of the scenes are really visually impressive, and the starring actor Brandon Lee (Li Guo Hao) with his great onscreen presence (at the age of 21). Also, Lee managed to not just be an "action robot" in this movie but to also to convey the emotions and the love story of his character (involving gorgeus Regina Kent) in a credible, gripping way.

Just a few words about the action scenes in this movie. Don't expect a martial arts movie because of the main actor's last name. The action scenes consist mainly of shooting, although there are some hand to hand combat scenes. Brandon Lee did all the fighting in the movie himself but of course his fighting skills are nowhere near his father's. Yet, the fighting in Legacy of Rage is decent. Brandon gets to beat up superstar Bolo Yeung (Enter the Dragon, Bloodsport).

Yu and Lee make Legacy of Rage one of HK's best low budget movies of the 80's. If you like such films or one of those two men, you should buy Legacy of Rage. It shouldn't be too expensive.

PS: I suggest a Cantonese version with English subtitles

5 out of 5 stars Brandon Lee,RIP.......2005-05-25

I just happened to stumble across this flick the other day at the local Media Play and speaking as a hardcore Bruce Lee fan and of Brandon's performance in The Crow...I was blown away by Brandon's only Hong Kong movie. The action was there(Brandon stayed true to the Jeet Kune Do method that his dad polished) and while I didn't feel that he was attempting to imitate or emulate his dad...his intensity, mannerisms and even his expressions tend to resemble and honor his dad at times. I strongly recommend LOR for fans of Bruce and Brandon Lee, not just because it's a rare treat(or for the Cantonese soundtrack w/t English subtitles...cool), but because it represents the continuity of the Bruce Lee legacy and gives us more of a glimpse at what may've been(carrying Bruce Lee's torch and coming from under his shadow) had he lived to carry on his father's martial arts/film legacy. A truw, underground martial arts classic by the son of the greatest of all time. Brandon Lee...Rest In Peace, man.
