After viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon. Sixtysome years later, the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film. The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of its recent hits. Disney's Tarzan doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa. What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music (the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters) and the remarkable animation. Deep Canvas, a 3-D technology, was developed for the film, creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees, often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs. The usual foray of sidekicks, including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie O'Donnell, should keep the little ones aptly entertained. The two lead voices, Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane, are inspired choices. Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points (the last third) and makes Tarzan's initial connection with all things human (including Jane) delicious entertainment. Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films, but as cookie-cutter entertainment, Tarzan makes a pretty good treat. (Ages 5 and up) --Doug Thomas

Description

Swing into action and adventure with Disney's original classic, TARZAN(R), packed with fun-filled bonus features and award-winning music such as the memorable "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Trashin' The Camp." Disney's magnificent animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's story of the ape man begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. Even though he is shunned as a "hairless wonder" by their leader, Tarzan is accepted by the gorillas and raised as one of their own. Together with his wisecracking ape buddy Terk and neurotic elephant pal Tantor, Tarzan learns how to "surf" and swing through the trees and survive in the animal kingdom. His "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he knows and loves with his gorilla family. Filled with humor, heart, and hilarious fun, TARZAN is an unforgettable adventure you'll watch again and again.~~TARZAN(R) Owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. And Used by Permission. 4 out of 5 stars Surprising.......2007-08-23

I didnt think it would be that great but it is actually very sweet and endearing. The animation is top notch and the voice acting is wonderful. Kids will love this movie, as will adults. It feels very modern and new but it still maintains the classical 'Disney feel'.

5 out of 5 stars Tarzan.......2007-06-27

Son enjoyed the movie. I like the little educational bits (like the one included here about jungle) Disney has put in some DVDs.

The movies in this second collection of Tarzan adventures pass the Samuel L. Jackson Snakes on a Plane title test. Either you want to own a film called Tarzan and the Leopard Woman or you don't. And if you're a fan of the original Tarzan movies, then no doubt you must. These are the last six Tarzan films to star Johnny Weissmuller in the iconic role that spawned a thousand hollers (so ingrained is Carol Burnett's imitation of his signature shout-out that Weissmuller's own performance seems lacking!). Produced for RKO, they are low-budget affairs, but really, who watches Tarzan movies for the production values? The more fake the backdrops and the more obvious the mismatched stock animal footage the better! Tarzan Triumphs (1943) is the best of the bunch. World conflict rears its ugly head in the jungle as Nazis invade a hidden city for its precious oil and tin. Almost worth the price of this set alone is the climactic scene in which Tarzan pursues an evil German through the jungle, tauntingly calling out "Nazi," from behind rocks and trees. There's more wartime intrigue in Tarzan's Desert Mystery (1943), which somehow combines a stranded female USO magician (Nancy Kelly), Arab sheiks, more Nazis, and, most memorably, a giant spider and a man-eating plant. Tarzan and the Amazons (1945) and 1947's Tarzan and the Huntress (with a great climactic elephant stampede) offer more traditional jungle villains, exploitative explorers, and unscrupulous animal collectors, respectively. Exotic cults figure in Tarzan and the Leopard Woman (1946) and Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948), which was Weissmuller's vine-swinging swan song.

Maureen O'Sullivan has left the jungle, but Brenda Joyce makes for a very fetching Jane. Johnny Sheffield matures before our eyes as Boy. And Weissmuller still manages to avoid loincloth malfunctions as he swings through the trees and tangles with animal and human adversaries. He is both a role model ("Never kill for fun, only for food," he tells Boy at one point) and something of a jungle chauvinist ("Jungle much more peaceful before woman come," he jokes with Jane). But the breakout star of these films is Cheetah, who effortlessly steals every scene he's in, whether covering his eyes when Tarzan and Jane kiss or parachuting out of an airplane. His finest moment comes at the end of Tarzan Triumphs, when his simian squeals broadcast over a shortwave radio are mistaken by German officers for the voice of "the Fuehrer" It's a Hollywood cliché, but truly, they don't make 'em like this anymore! --Donald Liebenson

Description

Beasts roar, danger abounds and Johnny Weissmuller swoops into the last 6 of his 12 adventures as film's definitive Tarzan. The vine swinger provides World War II heroics in Tarzan Triumphs and Tarzan's Desert Mystery. Next, he welcomes Jane (Brenda Joyce) home and champions a secluded female tribe in Tarzan and the Amazons. A deadly cult proves no match for the jungle lord in Tarzan and the Leopard Woman. And the Ape Man calls in elephants to deal with poachers in Tarzan and the Huntress and rescues a pearl-diving community in Tarzan and the Mermaids. What came next? Weissmuller would return to the wilds as Jungle Jim, Johnny Sheffield (Boy) became Bomba the Jungle Boy, Joyce played Jane again in Tarzan's Magic Fountain and Cheetah became the world's oldest chimp, celebrating birthday 74 in 2006. Ungawa!

4 out of 5 stars I wish they'd get Lex on DVD.......2007-04-01

I wish the ones with Lex Barker would become available. I think Lex was the best looking Tarzan although Johnny was still good. A good watch although I say again Lex is better.

5 out of 5 stars Tarzan of the 40s and 50s.......2007-03-20

I think it is great to be able to see the wonderful Taran films of the 40s and 50s. They are fantastic in themselves and nothing can compare. I think the next step is to release the Lex Barker Tarzan films. Both he and Johnny Weismuller shared the screen as Tarzan back then and they both mean a lot to people.

Thanks for asking my opinion.

Many actors have slipped on a loincloth and swung from a jungle vine, but nobody reached the treetops of Tarzania quite like Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympic swimmer. And Tarzan's greatest Jane was Maureen O'Sullivan, who moved into T's treehouse for six films at MGM, all collected in this splendid boxed set. It is possible to find these films hokey... but only if you have absolutely no feeling for the magic of early-sound pictures, or no joy in the gee-whiz, Saturday-matinee wonder of Tarzan's prelapsarian lifestyle. To say nothing of the surprisingly overt running theme of (implied) hot jungle sex.

Tarzan, the Ape Man (1932), made with the blessings of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, establishes the basics of the series (and uses extra Africa footage MGM had compiled for Trader Horn). There'd been many Tarzans before, but Weissmuller's buff bod and innocent charm won over audiences. Tarzan and His Mate is generally considered the best of the lot; it is also the sexiest, especially after the restoration of a hotsy-totsy nude swimming scene. The formula still works in Tarzan Escapes, which brings Jane's cousins out for a visit to the Mutia Escarpment, with its elephant-powered elevator for Tarzan's pad. (Always keep in mind that this is Africa of kiddie imagination, not the real deal.)

Tarzan Finds a Son! introduces Johnny Sheffield as Boy, and stirs up the nest. Things were getting rote by the time of Tarzan's Secret Treasure, and the jungle is left behind entirely for Tarzan's New York Adventure, which has some fun stunts. Also included in the boxed set is the documentary Tarzan: Silver Screen King of the Jungle, which is a fine overview not just of the MGM Tarzan series but of its predecessors (though it does not mention the fact that Weissmuller went on to crank out more Tarzan pictures at RKO). It does delve into the mystery of just what the heck "ungawa" means. --Robert Horton

I love the Tarzan collection, it takes me back to when I was a kid and was watching them for the first time. The quality of the films are excellent. From the first "umgawa" to the last "Tarzan yell", they are truly a joy to watch. I'm so glad I purchased them and have them on disc to sit down and watch anytime I want. I also urge people that don't know, to research Johnny Weissmuller, and see what a great athlete he really was. Thanks Amazon, for offering such a great collection!!!!

One of those legendary missed opportunities, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is a movie that should have been great but wound up the victim of conflicting egos and wrong-headed choices. Based on a screenplay by Robert Towne (who took his name off it when he wasn't allowed to direct) and directed by Hugh Hudson (riding high on the basis of Chariots of Fire), the film tried to rethink the Tarzan legend of Edgar Rice Burroughs, and boy, did it have to: By casting French-accented Christopher Lambert as Tarzan, the filmmakers had to transform his white-hunter mentor Ian Holm into a Frenchman to explain those inflections in Tarzan's monosyllabic speech. The film has some amazing jungle footage and a truly touching relationship between Tarzan and the apes--but it gets pretty silly when Tarzan gets to London and hooks up with Sir Ralph Richardson, as his grandfather. --Marshall Fine

Description

An infant raised to manhood among savage apes, living by his wits and the law of the jungle, returns to society to claim his inheritance of humanity and privilege. This collision of "wild" and "civilized" worlds is the extraordinary saga of Tarzan, chronicled in Edgar Rice Burroughs' popular book series. Starring: Christopher Lambert, Andie MacDowell, Ian Holm

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars True to the books.......2007-08-13

As a kid, I used to read the Edgar Rice Burroughs TARZAN novels - and loved them! Of all the Tarzan movies I've seen, this one comes the closest to Burrough's vision of the character. It is tragic that so many people associate Tarzan with the much-parodied (and fabricated) "Me Tarzan, you Jane." This infamous line is not to be found in the books.

It may come as a surprise to many, but the Tarzan in the novels is HIGHLY intelligent, cunning, multi-lingual and has had much experience in what we call "civilization." He chooses to go back to the jungle, not because he is against civilization. Rather, he is simply bored with it.

In this movie, they do a good job of showing an English nobleman who was raised in the jungle attempting to adapt & fit into his "rightful place" in English / Scottish society. This sets this film apart from most any other Tarzan movie, and they give it a serious look.

The one issue I have with the film is with the casting of Christopher Lambert to play Tarzan / Lord Greystoke. Lambert is a fine actor, which is why I have mixed feelings about bringing this issue up. The problem is, in the books Tarzan is always described as being this large, hulking, very muscular guy. Lambert is simply not a big guy, and he's not particularly buffed up. On the upside, he does do a terrific job of portraying an English Lord who was raised in the jungle, and still has the jungle in his savage heart.

The lovely Andie McDowell is wonderful as a cultured, kind Jane who does her best to integrate the jungle man into his unfamiliar surroundings. Of course, Andie has always been one of my favorite actresses, so I'm pretty much a fan of anything she does!

This is a very different Tarzan movie than what most are accustomed to. If you're looking for a movie that all takes place in the jungles of Africa, this is not the one to get. It is a pyschological journey of a man who was literally raised by apes (in fact, the word Tarzan means "white ape") who is thrown into the midst of humankind & does not quite know how to respond. The film is also unique in that I don't believe "Tarzan" is ever mentioned; he is only known as John Clayton; Lord Greystoke. This is the truest form of Greystoke's story every told in cinema.

4 out of 5 stars A classic---almost.......2007-06-13

When I first viewed this film, I was taken by the fabulous performance of the Tarzan character. The first 2/3 of the film is wonderful and the viewer can identify with the "human" qualities of the apes----just like the boy Tarzan did. But the last third of the movie is a bit too much, particularly the scenes at the British Museum. At that point the movie became too contrived and unbelievable. But the scenery and the acting are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Tarzan at his best........2007-02-12

A very well done Tarzan remake! The stars were great, locations wonderful, and the story was added to by filling in details we had never seen before.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Enjoyed This Version of Tarzan...Loved it!.......2006-12-31

This is the ONLY version that really gets you in touch with the human quality of Tarzan and his torture.

Christopher Lambert does an exceptionally good job in this remake. The parallel of a man raised in the wild who could adopt the manners of society but was not happy there versus the aristocracy he was born into as being the true animals was touching.

Loved it!

Whereas the original Tarzan tells the story of a man raised by gorillas who learns to bring together the human and animal worlds, Tarzan II is a prequel, of sorts, focusing on a chapter from Tarzan's childhood where he realizes he is not an ape and sets out to discover his true identity. The young misfit runs away from his loving mother, Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), and wanders up the Dark Mountain to come face to face with the monstrous Zugor. But all is not serious in this 72-minute boondoggle; there is Disney's usual foray into frivolity by way of a few wisecracking sidekicks--a couple of gorilla brothers named Uto and Kago, and their nettlesome Mama Gunda (voiced by Estelle Harris, a laudable choice). Despite the star-studded voice cast, there is a sense of re-tread ground here, and the story (loosely based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' distinctive tale) shows signs of formulaic Disney. Nonetheless, Phil Collins' trio of original songs livens the pace to make the effort a short-lived smile. (Ages 6 to 14) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Why the midquels, disney??? Why???.......2007-04-19

First off, the animation was very nice. But pretty is as pretty does, right? The story is pretty weak and fairly uninteresting, like most disney DTVs today. It's about Tarzan's boyhood. Like I said, it's not too bad, but it's not very original either.
This is one of disney's first so called "midquels" that later spawned nightmares Bambi 2 and Fox and the Hound 2. I know that some don't feel that way (especially about Bambi 2 apparently), but, if you ever ask those that do like them, the answer is usually that they would have preferred a real sequel. What's with that, eh? Anyway, I'd rent this, there is too much of a chance that you might not like it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Disney sequels.......2007-02-20

I was about to say that Tarzan 2 was the best Dinsey sequel out there but I can't really say that when Toy Story 2 exists. Plus the Alladin sequels weren't that bad either. In Tarzan 2, young Tarzan struggles to in keeping up with the Gorillas. He almost dies and his mother thinks he died. He gets ready to tell her otherwise when he overhears some say the mom is better off now without him. So he sets off on his own to figure out what he is and what species he belongs with. He meets a grumpy old gorilla who scares other creatures off by making them think he's some scary creature. Tarzan promises he won't tell everyone the creature is just an old gorilla if he helps him figure out what he is.

The result is a harmless, cute and charming film that won't make you forget the first one but will still entertain you. Plus it helps that Phil Collins is back doing the songs once again. His songs help enhance the film a lot as well. I think this one could've actually have been released in theatres it was so well done. I mean come on Disney does need to go back to releasing more traditional animated movies in theatres. But they also need to be more original with them. I mean this was good but there's way too many sequels these days. I mean a sequel to the Hunchback of Notre Dame ? What's next Sleeping Beauty 2: The Second Nap ? For one I wouldn't mind seeing them make movies based on their cartoon series. I mean who wouldn't want Gummi Bears to be brought back with a few movies by Disney ? Or how about another Ducktales movie ??

3 out of 5 stars Shall I rank it 2 stars or 3??.......2006-04-14

I watched this movie when about 1 week after it was published. I thought it was good when I first watched it, but now I don't. However, this movie was not very bad, I just don't like it as I used to do.
The story and every plot was funny, and they made me laugh. But by all accounts, it was not a very excellent movie, it was only a comedy. Maybe I was affected by the remarks from many friends, then I watched this movie again, in order to find some defects of this movie. Needless to say, somewhat, I found.
Firstly, the story was not very good except it was funny. It was not like the original, it wasn't touching, none of the plots could make me feel warm or make my eyes wet. And I couldn't find the theme of this movie, sometimes I felt it was a little confused. What worse, sometimes I felt it strayed from the point. But it doesn't matter, maybe there was no point.
Secondly, I thought the tableaux of this movie were colorful, but not very smooth. The best of the tableaux was, at the end of the movie, young Tarzan swang through the jungle, everything on the backdrop was beautiful and natural. However, it's still not good enough.
Finally, I thought the music in this movie was not so good, though I couldn't say it was terrible. I doubted that whether Disney lazed, and Phil Collins did not so good as he used to do. Only "Who Am I" was good after a fashion. And the scores were not as good as the original's.
Generally speaking, this movie was much better than "Tarzan&Jane", but couldn't be compared with "Lady and the Tramp-2: Scamp's Adventure".

I didnt think it would be that great but it is actually very sweet and endearing. The animation is top notch and the voice acting is wonderful. Kids will love this movie, as will adults. It feels very modern and new but it still maintains the classical 'Disney feel'.

The couple's first anniversary of wedded jungle bliss is approaching and Jane ponders what gift would be appropriate--necessitating three flashbacks from the Disney television series explaining why various celebrations are out of the question. First Jane remembers when her old British school chums came to rescue her from the bush and whisk her back to civilization. Then Terk and Tantor help her recall the time diamond miners hired Tarzan only to double-cross him. The final remembrance features Jane's old neighbor Robert who flies to Africa to recover a music box he gave her--and to betray England. Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo do the honors as the voices of Tarzan and Jane, and Mandy Moore and Phil Collins provide the vocals for two new songs. Like many of Disney's straight-to-video "sequels," the animation and story aren't up to on par with the original,; but the kids won't care. Ages 3 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

As Tarzan and Jane's one-year marriage anniversary approaches, Jane searches the jungle for the perfect gift for Tarzan, enlisting the help of the hilarious Terk and Tantor. As they recall the many adventures they've shared so far, Jane realizes what an exciting year it's been in the jungle; from encounters with both old friend and new adversaries, to outsmarting prowling panthers to surfing the lava down an erupting volcano. But that's nothing compared to what Tarzan has in store for Jane--a surprise that will show her just how much he understands her world. All of the favorite characters from Disney's TARZAN are back, including Terk, Tantor and the Professor, in an action-packed tale full of surprises. TARZAN & JANE features irresistible new music, including a new duet of "Two Worlds" performed by Phil Collins and Mandy Moore. The wonderful new musical number "Singing To The Song Of Life" is also sung by Moore.

5 out of 5 stars Great for young children.......2007-09-08

My son was a huge tarzan fan. When he was about 3 yrs old he watched this about a thousand times so we definately got our money's worth. For die-hard adult fans of the original Tarzan it may not rate well, but for young children looking for action and entertainment...this movie is 5 stars!

1 out of 5 stars The worst movie ever made........2006-03-19

The title says it all. The first Tarzan movie was a work of art, however, this is a disgrace. They could have actually made an interesting plot with this, except they just threw it all away, adding in weird flashbacks and stuff, probably to direct you away from the lame plot. My eight-year-old cousin fell asleep in this, so I'm sure that I'm not the only one thinking the way I do. As far as Disney sequels that were only realeased on DVD and video go, I'd say the only one worth getting is The Lion King 1 1/2. That one was actually funny and had a plot.

I hope this review helped you save your well-earned money.

1 out of 5 stars Wha, wha, wha?.......2005-12-23

The first Tarzan was the only good one. How could Jim Cummings and Jeff Benett betray me? Tarzan 2 was no exception. I can't believe I had mom waste money on the DVD! This movie (I dare not to call it a movie) is only good for first viewing. Really the only part I liked was the end. Mandy Moore's "The Song of Life" was cute. But otherwise, a very dumb movie.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-11-24

My title says it all. I sat waiting for this movie to end as I watched the poor animation and predictable story. The whole movie focused around Jane's flashbacks of the past year she spent with Tarzan. Because they're flashbacks, you already know who's going to live and who's going to...well, live. Nothing too exciting, heartbreaking, wonderful, or anything that falls into that catergory ever happens in this movie. Overall, I would say this movie is an extremely poor follow-up to a great, action-packed, colorfully animated movie. Oh, and if you still have some desire to watch this movie, I wish I knew how to give you ours, because its only use in our house is collecting dust...which isn't that useful. It has only been watched once, so after some feather dusting, it should be in mint condition.

1 out of 5 stars Tarzan & Jane.......2004-09-14

This movie was so boring! My brother and I watched it a few years ago, and haven't watched it since. Let me tell you what this movie is about, and you tell me if it sounds interesting:

It's about Jane remembering things. HOW BORING IS THAT?! ALL IT IS IS FLASHBACKS! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ACTION, ADVENTURE, AND EVERYTHING ELSE GOOD THAT WE SAW IN THE FIRST MOVIE?!

Just another example of how directors take good movies, and make cruddy sequels to them, hoping they'll be a big hit like the original...WHICH THEY'RE NOT!!

I think the movie we have is going in the neighborhood garage sale next year.

2 out of 5 stars Jungle fever for Bo!.......2007-08-13

One need only look at the cover of this DVD to see what the story is really about. It's not Tarzan, but Jane. Bo Derek is the #1 selling point of the film, and she is basically the only reason anyone should bother buying this DVD. Bo Derek is certainly the sexiest Jane ever. However, she is not the best Jane ever. That distinction belongs to Andie McDowell in Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan. As such, the whole story is centered around her and her attempts to reconcile with her estranged father (Richard Harris).

There is possibly the least about Tarzan in this film of any Tarzan movie ever made. He is simply a wild man in the jungle and nothing more. He barely does anything other than wrestle a snake (for what seemed like 1/2 hour) and wrestle a macho native. There is no characterization whatsoever; nobody ever asks where he came from or what he's doing in Africa. It seems that nobody even cares! The Tarzan depicted in this film is a far cry from the Tarzan of the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. In the novels Tarzan is highly intelligent and cunning, while in this flick he is basically an ignorant brute & nothing more. I will say that one thing they DID get right was his physique. A buffed-up Miles O'Keefe fills that aspect nicely.

If you are looking for a Tarzan movie that remotely resembles the vision of Edgar Rice Burroughs, this is not the avenue to go. The late Richard Harris was a great actor, but even he is not enough to drag this film into the realm of respectability. As is the case with most John Derek films, the movie plods along at a snail-like pace. In the end (and this is an unfortunate thing to say about a Tarzan movie), the single biggest reason this flick is worth a look is to see Bo Derek au-natural in Africa. Basically, the whole movie seems to be a side-trip to see Bo topless. That's not an altogether bad thing, but.....

5 out of 5 stars Make Camp..........2007-07-29

When Bo Derek emerged from Blake Edwards's hit 10 as a cornrow-sporting sex symbol, she and her Svengali-like mentor John Derek--who'd been, at one time, a wooden movie pinup himself--decided that together they'd "create" Bo's subsequent starring vehicles. This collaboration resulted in a trio of Bad Movies To Love, including the 1981 Tarzan, the Ape Man. "Produced" by Bo and "directed and photographed" by John, Tarzan reduced Edgar Rice Burrough's far-from-classic work to the level of a magazine spread on a Playboy bunny in the, er, bush.

Richard Harris, an explorer in deepest, darkest Africa, is expecting the next boat to deliver a cannon, but instead he receives bombshell Bo, playing his long-estranged daughter. Her thespian skills had not improved one whit since her first Bad Movie with Harris, Orca, but blank-eyed Bo clearly hadn't a clue. "You first-class b--tard," she says to Harris, mistakenly believing that the dreamy, "I've-just-had-the-most-fabulous-orgasm" look on her face could possibly be interpreted as anger. Bo's utter ineptitude is made all the funnier by Harris's response, which is to ham it up to the skies--and beyond. When Bo leaves his welcoming party, Harris says to his mongrels, "She didn't find me a pretty sight. Do you think I--overdressed?" We fully expect one of the dogs to reply, "No, you--overacted."

Bo takes command of this soft-core extravaganza by doing what she's best at: stripping off her Banana Republic-style wardrobe to swim--well, perhaps "bob" is the more accurate term--in that ocean surf rarely seen in films set in the middle of the Dark Continent. Bo in the buff brings around Miles O'Keeffe, a very buffed Tarzan, and just when it seems that this comely pair might turn the movie into a hard-core porn flick--which would've been a big improvement--Harris literally runs into the frame, screaming at his safari aide (Bad Movie vet John Phillip Law), "Make camp, make camp, make camp!" It's hard to imagine how the flick could be any campier. One night, hearing Tarzan's patented yell, Harris bellows back, "Shut up, you boring son of a ...!"--the very thing that the Dereks should have told Harris. Bo instead calls Harris a "b--tard" again, prompting this reply: "I am. I wallow in me. I indulge myself 100 percent. Take my advice, dear, do the same thing." As if the notoriously self-indulgent Dereks weren't already way, way past the 100 percent mark!

After O'Keeffe saves Bo from a riotous slow-mo encounter with a rubber snake, his unconscious body gets carried away on the tusks of an obliging elephant as Bo, panting with lust, follows along. Grimacing while picking at her teeth (apparently to suggest that she's thinking), Bo eyes O'Keeffe's physique and says, "I've never touched a man before..."--a howler that's topped when these two go swimming. "I feel like I'm reading this in a book," Bo exults, as if she could read. "I don't know whether to laugh or cry or just turn to the next page!" It all ends, as we'd hoped it would, with local savages forcing a nude Bo down on all fours. "They're washing me," she cries, in one of our most favorite Bad Movie lines ever, "just like a horse!" O'Keeffe rescues her--but it was too late to save her career.

2 out of 5 stars Me Trazan, You, lousey movie.......2007-07-20

I had never seen any of John Derek's movies before just recently and wasn't familiar with his work. After seeing this, I understood what his movies were all about : putting his beautiful woman on a pedastal, make her an object of desire, and sort of indirectly taunt the audience saying "This woman is with ME". He did that with Ursula Andress, Linda Evans, and finally Bo Derek. Substancewise, this movie leaves much to be desired (and I'm not talking about THAT desire).

Bo plays Jane, who comes to Africa to visit her father on an anthropology trip. Here she encounters Tarzan in the brush, they have a few meetings here and there which are building to the inevitable. She is kidnapped by natives and rescued by Tarzan, then leaves civilization to be with the Ape Man in the jungle.

Hmmm ... I guess you just had to be there. Personally I can't imagine someone going off into the jungle to live among the creatures no matter how hot the guy is (whose communication skills are just a bunch of grunts). Then again, this is one of those fantasy situations. For the men it's just about Bo. For the women, it's about a handsome stranger who takes you off to live in his palace (or jungle) like a somewhat fractured fairy tale. Fantasies, however, are just that. Fantasies. They don't last long. It's eye candy. You're better off looking at still photos on the Internet.

4 out of 5 stars Great to look at Bo Derek.......2006-11-11

This movie will never be considered a classic but if you are a Bo Derek fan this will satisfy your craving for eye candy.

1 out of 5 stars Pale reflection of the 1932 Original.......2006-09-23

I saw this movie on T.V. a few years ago, and since then I have bought the original Tarzan MGM movies. This version is a pale reflection of the 1932 film. There is no smouldering chemistry between Bo Derek and Miles O'Keeffe. Her character moves from being an overly confident heiress to a bumbling, blushing little schoolgirl who is in a tizzy over Tarzan's "Innocent/Natural/Virgin" state. Her father, James Parker (Richard Harris) is portrayed as an outspoken, vulgar, sex crazed expatriate obsessed with the elephants' graveyard and any female he can find. O'Keeffe's gives a "wooden" performance as Tarzan.Three Chimpanzees and a lone Orangutan follows the "Lord of the Apes". If you are looking for a great performance by legends in the business, check out the b/w originals which for all their flaws, have lasted for decades. If you just want to gape at Bo Derek half naked, this is the movie for you.

At least someone, somewhere, involved in this disposable Ape Man entry bothered to read the famous Edgar Rice Burroughs books on which the character is based. What was done with that information, unfortunately, amounts to nothing. Tarzan (vacantly handsome Casper Van Dien) and Jane (nondescript Jane March) head back to the jungle homeland and encounter pillaging baddies led by Steven Waddington (used better as a more complex nasty in The Last of the Mohicans). Director Carl Schenkel's film gives Tarzan back his long-absent status as an articulate gentleman, and it contains elements of Burroughs's feverish imagination, but it dully ticks off the "adventures" without any thrilling sense of fun. Schenkel is so inattentive to detail that he would have us believe no one raises an eyebrow at the sight of a man morphing into a humongous cobra (not that the Xena-level effects help). It's blandly amusing watching Van Dien plug away ineptly at both his heroics and English accent, though this is ultimately an empty diversion for completists only. --Steve Wiecking

5 out of 5 stars Good movie, Great actor.......2007-01-03

I will admit that I saw this movie because I wanted to see the marvelous Casper Van Dien in a film partially clothed. Part of the beautiful scenery was the african locations and the other part of the beautiful scenery was the partially clothed Casper Van Dien. He is a man that has a beautiful body and is a celebration of the male body. Yes, this movie for me was a guilty pleasure. The movie travels a little too fast and it doesn't expalin too much about what is going on. In my opinion, it could have lasted longer with a little bit more suspense built in to the movie, but it is still a good movie. I do recommend this movie to anyone that likes Tarzan movies and especially to anyone that really likes seeing Casper Van Dien on film.

4 out of 5 stars Tarzan Worth Watching.......2006-11-04

I love Casper Van Dien, I liked him in the original Starship Troopers and if your interested in a Tarzan film that is entertaining and light, this is the film for you, your children will love it and Casper Van Dien is definetly easy on the eyes, I thoroughly enjoyed this film even though I am not a Tarzan fan.

4 out of 5 stars Family Entertainment - Finally!.......2006-05-07

I went to see this film in the theater when it was released and I have to say, that despite my own personal penchant for wanting darker, more edgy themes, I was thrilled to see a good, old-fashioned, wholesome, straightforward adventure tale suitable for the whole family - just like I enjoyed when I was a kid. Think about it: when was the last time that a film like this was made? I can tell you. It was the 1970s. Nothing since then has been free from vulgarity, excessive violence, sexuality and "complexity" of character that taints the hero - in short, things that are not aimed at nor appropriate for children. The only films for children anymore are animated. The message is that adults don't have time for telling tales of adventure and fantasy to kids and I promise you that the message has been received loud and clear. This film is the one standout I can think of in the last 30-odd years against that trend and I applaud it. In that context it was uncommonly good and by any measure, particularly among fans of ERB, it was among the most faithful to the books of any Tarzan film.

2 out of 5 stars Marginally Entertaining, But Nothing Special.......2006-04-04

So many Tarzan films have been released since the days of black-and-white serials in the 1930s, and we have seen an animation version (from Disney), re-told version (`Greystoke') starring Christopher Lambert and Andie McDowell with dunned voice, and just awful versions (`Tarzan the Ape Man' featuring Bo Derek). This Hollywood version with Casper Van Dien/Jane March is not so awful as is sometimes regarded, but still a below average.

There are a couple of bad things about `Tarzan and the Lost City': its scanty and poorly-directed actions and very dull characters. You can hear Tarzan's yelling and see vine-swinging, but as the action sequences (constructed in banal ways) are made with really choppy and hasty editing, there is nothing exciting about the end results which betray the lack of budget and zeal of the filmmakers. Though the film is distributed from Warner Brothers, and some scenes showing the nature of Africa are beautiful to see, the production designs and the props are at best those of the films made for TV. Cheesy effects at the climax scene only made me sad, and this was made only one year prior to the release of much more enjoyable `The Mummy.'

Speaking of which, `Tarzan and the Lost City's resembles at some points this blockbuster hit from Universal Pictures. Both are set in Africa, both about the hidden treasures, both striving to be an Indiana-Jones-like romp. The difference is Casper Van Dien is no Brendan Fraser. Casper Van Dien (and his muscles) is certainly convincing as Tarzan as long as he doesn't talk. It may be his strange British accent or bland acting (or careless direction) that disappoints us most, but whatever it is, this Tarzan could have been better with someone else as star or director. And his fiancé Jane by stilted Jane March doesn't help, nor the dancing chimp in white dress.

This film does one good thing at the beginning, and that is that it reminds us that actually Tarzan is not his real name. He is born John Clayton, now Lord Greystoke, so he has an aristocratic origin. But soon the film forgets that fact, and continues to show the uninspired and unexciting action scenes.

Perhaps Peter Jackson is the only candidate for the right director who can pull off the difficult job of making this legacy of Tarzan a truly thrilling and exciting film. He knows the right cast, the right use of CGI, and would undoubtedly spend enough time and money to realize the world of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Let's wait until then.

4 out of 5 stars Tarzan for the Fun of It.......2005-11-26

Let me say first off that this is afterall fantasy and not reality.
If you want reality perhaps one of the many so called reality shows so popular today is your forte. Otherwise take this film as it was intended a family adventure fantasy, which it accomplishes quite sufficiently and deserves a good mark. If you watch some of the older films in this genre there is no comparison. I for one own it and enjoy it.
