1 out of 5 stars Horrendous...should have been called "Three Guys With Swords" .......2007-08-08

This movie is possibly one of the worst films I have ever seen. Having been a huge fan of both the original novel, and the 1973-4 movie versions by Richard Lester; I was shocked and disgusted that
A: Disney put their name on it, and
B: that they actually had the nerve to call it "The Three Musketeers."
Possibly my favorite/worst moment of the movie was a spot where a bunch of bravos yell "It's Porthos the pirate!" When I saw this in the theater, I distinctly heard three other people around me (besides myself) exclaim "Porthos the PIRATE???"
It's a ridiculous, puerile, pitiful dilution of both a magnificent story (Dumas' novel) and a cinematic masterpiece (Lester's films.)
If you want to see barrels of gunpowder explode, maybe you should get this movie.
If, however, you want an inspired, dramatic, funny, action-packed adventure that's beautifully filmed, try here The Complete Musketeers (The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers)

5 out of 5 stars Eye Candy.......2007-07-17

Purists beware, this movie is absolutely nothing like the book.
It seems to be a mixture of a previous adventure mentioned briefly in the book mixed with a few of the highlights, such as the initial challenges and the grand finally. If you are looking for any sort of authentic reproduction of the book, this is not it.

For those of you looking for a light hearted romp and some Hollywood swashbuckling then you'll probably enjoy this movie. Its eye-candy cast and swashbuckling antics were clearly the priority, do not look for anything deeper plot wise. Honestly, the cast was fantastic and I wish they had done a real reproduction of the book. But as it is, this movie is just fine with me.

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Wonderful Film!! Highly Recommended........2007-06-09

If you've never read the book by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers is a fabulous film that you will absolutely love. Several reviewers harp on the differences between the book and movie, but the very reason for creating a movie version is that it's SUPPOSED to be different. This one is excellently filmed, directed, and of particular note are all of the amazing actors! Personally, I've been in love with Oliver Platt, one of the most underrated actors of our time, for years, and this movie is an excellent showcase for his talents. But the star is most definately Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, at his most evil best. I very highly recommend this movie to ALL ages, as it is appropriate to watch with your entire family.

1 out of 5 stars What WAS That?.......2007-06-08

I don't even know where to begin--the horrible acting, the terrible costuming, the obviously fake sets, the lack of continuity, or the cliched (and/or just plain stupid) lines? The "action and adventure" to which some have alluded is no more than a few people shooting each other or clashing swords while saying some really idiotic things; either that, or trying, and failing, to give the impression that they are truly courageous heroes. D'Artagnan looks and acts like a men's clothing model. The Musketeers are brainless wierdos. The king is a temper tantrum-throwing little kid. De Rochefort is obviously modifying his voice to make it more foreboding--but the fact that this is so obvious rather ruins the effect. And he looks like he should be in a gangster movie. Milady is definitely trying too hard. The red-haired doofus...I don't know where he came from. Well, that basically sums it up, folks.

4 out of 5 stars Forlicking Classic.......2007-05-15

Frolicking Classic; the classic story told in few words and comical scenes.
I love Oliver Platt who plays one of the Musketeers. All for one! and One
for all! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Action, Adventure and Classic.......2007-09-13

This is my favorite adaptation of this Duma's classic. The outstanding ensemble of actors were superb. The granduer of the palaces and commoness of all else were well portrayed. A country boy, bedazzled by the new world he has stepped into, yet his desire to do right, along with the mentoring of the mature musketeers, enables him to grow into the hero Dumas created. He is lauded by those he saved and respected by his enemies.
Would like to see the "Return of the Musketeers" release May 30, 2000 be put on DVD.

Awesome. How can you NOT like Oliver Reed at Athos?

Sadly, it doesn't have the third movie (and therefore not really complete, but what the heck?) and I've heard that it isn't on DVD yet.

If you love this time period, this is a great buy! Remember, this is the older version, not the new lousy one with Kiefer Sutherland and those nouveau Musketeers!

I loved these movies when they came out in the theater and I loved watching them on my DVD player at home. Always funny with fantastic sword fighting - much better than most of what we see today. No CGI fight garbage, just cool and realistic fights.

5 out of 5 stars On Dvd at last.......2007-08-24

In my opinion this is the best of any of "the Three Musketeers" films made I have seen.I've had the video for years and at last this Lana Turner, Gene Kelly version is on Dvd.The presence of both Turner and Kelly make this special. Turner as a great villian and Kelly with his agility plus a great supporting cast make the film watchable many times over when your in the mood for this sort of adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Best MUSKETEERS of them all!.......2007-06-16

Here is a story that has been told and re-told and re-told, but this Gene Kelly-Lana Turner version is, by far, the most fun, the most complete and certainly the most visually stunning. This is 3-strip Technicolor at its' most glorious. Kelly is a wonderfully energetic Dartagnan, and Lana Turner is a staggeringly beautiful Milady, and she plays her to perfection. The supporting cast could hardly be better: Angela Lansbury,
lovelier than we remembered, Frank Morgan, Van Heflin and June Allyson as
Constance

Don't miss this DVD. It is money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars The Three Musketeers.......2007-05-20

Fabulous movie. We love Gene Kelly and Lana Turner (a delicious villian). The scenery is beautiful, especially filmed in technicolor, and the story is very appropriate for family viewing. Our only diappointment was that it was not released in a wide-screen version which would have enhanced the sword fights and panoramic views.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasmagastic.......2007-05-12

If you have never watched a Three Musketeer's movie, this one is for you! In this early adaptation of Alexander Dumas' book, the characters literally jump off the pages in the form of Gene Kelly, Vincint Price, Angela Landsbury and everyone else involved perfectly.
If you have always been a person to read a book and then be slightly to overly dissapointed during the film remake of that book. Then this movie will change your perspective on that as well. I have used this movie as my "Book" in book reports about four times. And each time the teacher was always amazed at how well I delved into the peoples actuall emotions. That's because I've seen the characters how they were meant to be.
This movie follows the book almost word for word. It's fantastic. I have yet to see another movie based on a book that is nearly as well done as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Almost the best screen version.......2007-05-08

The influence of Buster Keaton on Jackie Chan's brand of comedy-action stunt work is well documented, but looking at Gene Kelly's impressively energetic stunt work in George Sidney's lavish 1948 MGM version of The Three Musketeers it's clear that his viewing extended beyond the silent era. The sheer amount of vitality and imagination that goes into the first duel with Richelieu's men is absolutely astounding: it's almost like watching a vintage live-action Tom and Jerry cartoon. Unfortunately, while he shares Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s athleticism, he also shares his penchant for ham, particularly in the love scenes (this is the performance Kelly sends up mercilessly in Singin' in the Rain's The Duelling Cavalier), but he's never quite bad enough to throw the film of course. George Sidney, who had one of the best eyes for striking composition of any directors at MGM, makes sure it always looks good (this is from the days when Technicolor really was glorious), Herbert Stothart's rousing score carries it along with unashamed gusto (though it could have done without the Tchaikovsky for the love scenes) and there's a fine supporting cast - Van Heflin, Gig Young and Robert Coote round out the Musketeers, Angela Lansbury and Frank Morgan play the royalty, Lana Turner the femme fatale while Vincent Price provides superbly underplayed velvet villainy as Richelieu, beating Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the cat on the lap business by a good 19 years (though he opts for a tortoiseshell tabby rather than a Persian White). Great fun in a Christmas Day kind of way.

Warners' DVD is quite a treat - a fine transfer with the theatrical trailer, brief radio promo, cartoon (though sadly not the obvious choice of Tom and Jerry's The Two Mouseketeers but What Price Fleadom?) and a vintage James Fitzpatrick travelog.

The unlikeliest heroes in any queen's court would have to be janitors Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy, who dream of adventure in Disney's animated feature The Three Musketeers and get their wish under dubious circumstances. Though the trio aspires to perform brave deeds on behalf of their monarch, Minnie Mouse (who pines for a fantasy beau that looks a lot like Mickey), they are held back as servants by the head Musketeer, Pete. What they don't know is that Pete secretly schemes to get rid of the queen but has, thus far, failed in his efforts. Desperate, he appoints Mickey and his bumbling friends guardians to Minnie--on the assumption she'll be all the more vulnerable--but underestimates their determined, if slapstick, resourcefulness. Good, classic Disney comedy meets storybook romance in this short (68 minutes) animated feature, which features songs and familiar melodies by Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Beethoven. --Tom Keogh

Description

"Classic Disney characters and a classic story unite for a colorful and witty new comic adventure" (Gerry Putzer, New York Daily News) in the musical, full-length movie based on the timeless tale "The Three Musketeers." Mickey, Donald, and Goofy may not look like heroes, but they have a surprise for Pete. Powered by teamwork and friendship, they soon learn that they can accomplish anything if they work together. Packed with swashbuckling action and six rousing songs -- featuring comical spins on classical music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and others -- this exciting musical comedy is sure to be a hit with the entire family.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Mickey Mouse Films!!!.......2007-02-23

This is a quality film, really. I am the parent of a toddler and have seen a lot of really bad films. This movie is quick, has an above-average story line, good music (lyrics set to classical music)and was a real pleasure to watch (even for the 20th time). There are a few mildly dark elements (Pete, "bad guys", swordplay, etc.)and a bit of slapstick action, but there are equally good themes of bravery, friendship and teamwork and a happy ending. I still suggest watching it with your child(ren) just to discuss it further, if needed. All in all there is nothing the average toddler can't handle. I only wish that there were more quality children's films like this...Yeah I'm talking to you, Elmo!

3 out of 5 stars A great movie for Disney's Big 3.......2006-07-26

I am really glad that Disney is starting to wheel out it's classic stars again. While I do enjoy the feature films like Lion King, Tarzan, Peter Pan, etc.. I think their is nothing more "Disney" than the original stable of characters that made the Disney company the family studio.

Disney recently has come out with the "Disney Treasures collections" and several of those are the old Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto cartoons. When I watch those with my son I always end up thinking two things.
1. I wish they would display the original shorts more
&
2. I wish they would make more shorts for the classic characters.

I'm so glad that Disney has started doing that with the Once upon a Christmas series and now with "The 3 Musketeers" And I think all of these new ventures into Mickey are worth while and done excellently.

The comedy in this movie is wonderful. There is some undertone humor only the adults will get but it's not raunchy or inappropriate, and the slapstick humor is wonderful. Disney truly made an excellent movie for the family here and I hope all the Disney lovers out there or just families looking for a good movie will pick this up.

I know this in some ways, was a dangerous undertaking for Disney because Mickey is more than a character, but he really is an icon. So if you portray him in a way that the public doesn't like you can have a severe backlash, but Disney handled Mickey's latest outing with all the class Walt Disney himself would have wanted.

Also, there are a few characters in the movie that really surprised me.
1. Pete: was great! a wonderful villain all the way back to Steamboat Willie.
2. Donald: The attitude and personality of Donald has changed drastically in this movie. He's gone from the hothead to the passive coward. I found that a little unsettling; I hope that trend does not continue.
3. Clarabelle the cow: Clara was a regular in the old (and I mean Old) Disney cartoon shorts, but has been MIA for like 60 years. So to see her again was great.
4. The turtle narrator: He was a new character and was really a great storyteller, I hope he sticks around for the next Mickey movie.

5 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Stop Watching It!.......2006-03-20

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was going to be so boring 'cause I only watched a little bit of it. Then I was soon reunited with the movie again and I watched it once more. I fell in love with it! This proves the power of teamwork and it even has romance in it. I love the fact that Donald and Goofy came back for Mickey. And I also found it adorable, when, this is going to sound stupid, when Donald and Mickey hugged and he said to him that he knew that he would come back. Anyway, another thing I like is the humor in this like when Pete was teasing Mickey with a little bit of the Mickey Mouse Club March song and also when Mickey says "We'll save the princess, even if we die trying" and Donald says "Die?" This movie is just too glorious, and one day, I shall have it and I will watch it till I turn 100.

5 out of 5 stars Best Thing Disney's Done (Without Pixar) For Quite a While!.......2005-12-16

Once upon a time, Disney was one of the best animation companies ever, putting out stuff like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King and Aladdin. Now, Disney has mainly turned to two things:

1. Sequels that aren't worth seeing
2. Original works that aren't worth seeing

Fortunately, The Three Musketeers doesn't fall into either of these categories. It's an original, funny, cute movie that doesn't run too long to hold a kid's interest. (It's barely over an hour.)

Captain Pete, leader of the musketeers, has a secret plan -- a plan to kidnap Princess Minnie with the "help" of the Beagle Boys, and become king of all France. However, Minnie soon becomes suspicious that something's going on, and demands bodyguards. Captain Pete hires Micky, Donald, and Goofy, three janitors who have long dreamed of being musketeers. He's sure that they will never be able to stop him!

Little does he know....

This movie is definitely better done than most of the stuff Disney's putting out now. Although a few parts are predictable (Mickey and Minnie will fall in love, the musketeers will win, etc.), there are several funny sight gags, plays on words, great songs, and inside jokes (At one point, Pete quotes part of the theme song to the Mickey Mouse Club - my mom had to explain that one to me) that more than make up for that.

Things I Loved:
*The message of teamwork
*The running joke about not being able to understand a thing Donald was saying
*The way Mickey and Donald were wearing their regular clothes under their musketeer suits
*Pete's helpers, the Beagle Boys. They -- especially the smallest one -- were hysterical!!

Anyway, if you want to watch a recent Disney film, this is the one to see.

1 out of 5 stars Awful. Awful. Awful........2005-08-10

I was shocked to read the many wonderful reviews here. Being a fan of most things Disney, I picked this one up locally a few months ago. Me and my preteen daughter sat down to watch it, and gave up before ever finishing viewing it. The script is dull. The songs, while based on 'classic' melodies, are amateurish. (What happened to all the wonderful songs that graced the 1990's Disney films?) Even the characters voices bear no resemblence to the ones we are familiar with. (Yes, I'm aware that the actors doing the voices during the 30's through 50's have long since died. But surely a company with the funds Disney has could find voice talent that could do at least a passable facsimile.
Disney should be ashamed of putting their name on this yawner.

The great movie tradition of adapting high-toned novels into star-studded vehicles gets an airing in Warner DVD's Literary Classics Collection, a group of six such pictures. It's a grab bag, but some of this stuff is unmissable. The best film in the box might be the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda, Anthony Hope's buckle-swashing tale of a commoner (Ronald Colman) impersonating a lookalike king. This David Selznick production is one of those sparkling examples of the Hollywood heyday of the thirties, in which every cylinder is firing at full speed: buoyant script, luscious black-and-white photography (by the great James Wong Howe), exuberant swordplay, wonderful villainy (take a bow, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Raymond Massey), and a lovely damsel (Madeleine Carroll). John Cromwell directed, although others chimed in. As an adventure picture, it's just about flawless. On the flip side of the disc, the 1952 remake sticks closely to the original--and the formula still works, although the zest isn't quite there. Stewart Granger steps into Colman's shoes, with Deborah Kerr and James Mason in support.

The 1948 version of The Three Musketeers is one of the lesser versions of that swashbuckler; Gene Kelly and Lana Turner leads the cast in a Technicolor-iffic but dramatically underwhelming effort. Raoul Walsh's Captain Horatio Hornblower (1950) delivers thoughtful seagoing strategies, as the British captain navigating gunships and political winds. The movie doesn't have the oomph of the usual Walsh action film, perhaps keyed instead to Gregory Peck's serious presence, but it has a gratifyingly intelligent forward motion. Plus, the Hornblower disc comes with "Captain Hareblower," a Warners cartoon with Bugs Bunny battling Yosemite Sam on the high seas.

The shipboard morality play of Melville's Billy Budd is included here, in the classic 1962 adaptation by director Peter Ustinov (who also plays Captain Vere). Terence Stamp, in his film debut, is the innocent sailor Billy, and Robert Ryan etches one of the all-time portrayals of cold-eyed cruelty as the brutal master-at-arms Claggart. A great conversation piece in the era of the repertory house, the film holds up--and a commentary track with Stamp and Steven Soderbergh provides good stuff on the actor's career start.

The 1949 M-G-M production of Madame Bovary might not please Flaubert purists, but it will impress auteurist fans of Vincente Minnelli. The tale of a wayward small-town wife is infused with Minnelli's swooning grasp of camera movement and décor, and a showpiece ballroom sequence out-duels any Max Ophuls film for swirling dance delirium. Jennifer Jones' alien presence might be a problem for modern viewers, yet her strangeness actually fits the character. This might just be the discovery of the set, which is otherwise filled out with a satisfying batch of vintage cartoons and short subjects. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Billy Budd.......2007-08-07

I'll try to keep it short, I've waited years to track down a copy of this movie. (Thank you, Amazon, if that is not inappropriate).
The movie is "great" "superb" not lost in time. If you like old fashioned entertainment and action, done with integrity. Peter Ustinov as Producer/Director and a leading role, sympathetic, yet having to abide by sea laws, Robert Ryan as a mongrel, Terrence Stamp in yes, his first role, "the collector" came after, and a young "Aussie" John Meillon. Innocent charm, naivety and brutality in one film. I consider this a classic. But who am I to judge? Just a lover of a good film and escapeism.

4 out of 5 stars Surprised at lack of quality.......2007-06-22

I purchased this set mainly for the wonderful 1937 version of "The Prisoner of Zenda." I watched that film first, and was surprised at the lack of quality there. The film does not look to be restored. The picture has a "grainy" look to it. At one point, there are several "scratch" lines running from the top to the bottom of the screen for several frames. The most disappointing flaw, however, occurs near the beginning of the movie: the soundtrack is out of sync with the picture. You see the mouths of the actors move, and there is a split-second delay before you hear the voice. This is most annoying. I have collected many box sets from Warners, and indeed, this company has been my favorite source for the classics. However, their quality does vary from one picture to another (I was very disapointed with "Brigadoon" also -- very poor picture quality). I understand that it takes time and money to restore these pictures, but it also COSTS money to add them to a classic movie collection. If a movie is worth preserving, then it's worth restoring to a near-new quality before producing the DVDs for sale. I realize that we can't have the restoration quality of "The Wizard of Oz" on every product, but for cryin' out loud, can't we at least get a copy of a print with synchronized sound?

5 out of 5 stars How I remember these films!.......2007-05-08

I waited with earnest anticipation for these films to be released. And finally my wish was granted what wondeful and delightful memorys came flooding back to me. How I remember waking early to view these films on The Prize Morning Movie, and how constantly I looked to see if these fims had been released to DVD's, and then suddenly they where all released in One Box Set. I was moved with such joy, I could not wait to view these wonderful restored colored and every thing else they do to restore these films I watched them all in one weekend, I had my own home revival of classic films with popcorn and friends, it was wonderful!!!

5 out of 5 stars Prisoner of Zenda.......2007-05-06

This Definite Literary Classic Collection is great and a great addition to one's collection. My favorite was the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda.

5 out of 5 stars DVD of Horatio Hornblower... GREAT!!!.......2007-03-26

My VHS copy of Horation Hornblower was showing signs of age. I had looked for a DVD copy for three years. When I saw this collection--I bought it for that one movie, but I love Billy Bud, and it's great that it has a commentary. I wish Horatio had one also.

2 out of 5 stars Too many major creative problems derail this version of the Dumas pere classic.......2007-07-14

"D'Artagnan et les trois mousquetaires," pawned off on this side of the Atlantic as "The 4 Musketters," represents a most curious approach to the classic tale by Alexandre Dumas père. Actually, that is too kind, because this 2005 French film makes a bunch of mistakes. But since there are four musketeers, let us limit ourselves to the four biggest mistakes:

First, the film is dubbed. Not "dubbed" as in you can listen to it in English if you want to refrain from reading the subtitles because they are speaking French, but rather "dubbed" as in that is your only option. Remember all those dubbed foreign films you used to make fun of when you were growing up? Well, the dubbing in this film sounds that ludicrous, and the result is that your are unnecessarily distanced from the film as soon as the characters start talking.

Second, this film is the attempt to do the martial arts version of the story. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that idea, but the execution here is not particularly inspired. I did not check out the credits but whoever was responsible for the wirework in this film must have been relatively inexperienced in that regard because this is nowhere near the state of the art in that area of fight choreography. The net result is another major distraction because even if you accept the idea that this kind of action can work in this movie (which I am willing to go along with), the execution makes it seem like a bad idea.

Third, the film gets Emanuelle Béart ("Manon of the Spring") to play Milady Winter, which is a good thing, but then decides that the character is not simply evil, wicked, bad, mean and nasty, inside she is possessed by devil. I understand that Cardinal Richelieu (Tchéky Karyo) is the villain of the piece and interested more in power politics than spreading the gospel, but I think working so close to Satan is a bit much. There is also a way in which it undercut the whole idea that Milady Winter was a villainess, because now she is succeeding because she is Satan's spawn and not because she is a woman with a brain carving out her own little place in the world at the expense of every man she can take advantage of along the way.

Fourth, the final straw for me is that film, which despite the above, does try to strike to the key elements of the novel, ends too soon. Most versions of "The Three Musketeers" never get to the whole trial of Milady Winter (I never saw it until Richard Lester's "The Four Musketeers" in 1974, which is the point that I understood most versions of the novel were always condensed versions). But that is not the end of the story, which includes my favorite moment, which is when Richelieu drags D'Artagnan before him for the death of Milady and our young hero hands over the Cardinal's carte blanche order, "By my order, and for the good of the state, the bearer has done what has been done." Having sat through this 210-minute film without having become engaged in the narrative, having the credits role before getting to what I consider to be the "good part" only confirmed my impulse to round down rather than up.

The cast has Vincent Elbaz as D'Artagnan, Gregory Gadebois as Porthos, Gregori Derangre as Aramis, and Heino Ferch as Athos, and the main thing to be said for them is that they look nice but never strike me as being particular dashing. The whole idea is that you watch these guys and you want to be D'Artagnan and run off to be a Musketeer, but that never happens (the old guys in "The Man in the Iron Mask" had more panache). Stefania Rocca does a nice job as Anne D'Autriche as does Diana Amft as Constance, and since the problem is the way Béart's character is written and not her performance, the actresses come out ahead of the actors in this one. Tritan Ulloa's Louis XIII is not portrayed as a comically inept monarch for once and Matthew Chambers as the Duke of Buckingham does a decent job of keeping his character in the real world, which just makes the whole idea of Milady as a possessed ninja stand out even more as a strategic and tactical error.

3 out of 5 stars comme ci comme ça.......2007-06-28

There is a surreal aspect to this version of the Dumas classic that might remind one a bit of "Le Pacte des Loups" ("The Brotherhood of the Wolf). Interestingly enough, similar complaints were made of the length of that movie and some of the effects. In any case, the plotline holds up well but the dubbed English version is almost painful to hear. Both Emmanuelle Béart and Tchéky Karyo can speak Engish- at least they should've been allowed to use their own voices with English speaking actors OR let the film stand with the actors in it (who were good!) and leave it in French with subtitles. Dubbing isn't simply an annoying distraction but it also impedes the performance. Delivery of a line, nuances of the voice- all that is lost in dubbing and diminishes the effect the actors are trying to create. Regardless, the film did have its moments and if an original language version could be made, I'd jump my rating up to 4 or 4.5 in a snap.
A Dumas purist might not like the movie anyway but it was entertaining and did reflect a lot of the spirit of the Musketeers. In addition to the fine performances by Béart and Karyo, the actors playing d'Artagnan and Constance also did an excellent job.

1 out of 5 stars Some things you shouldn't mess with..........2007-06-16

Dumas is one, particularly if you cannot do better. The authors tried to add some supernatural elements to this story and ended up with a long, disjointed film which probably would have been better as a two-parter. Further, the film is not in English. If you watch in English, the characters' lip movements and the dialogue you hear are so disjointed the effect becomes laughable. The swordplay is beyond unrealistic as well---just one of those extended play battles where the directors clearly have no clue what an actual sword battle is. Give me the original movie.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Nice twist on an old classic!.......2007-06-11

Wow, long movie, great footage, fantastic twist on the story!
The lip-syncing was evident throughout as it wasn't a native English flick but definately worthy of any Musketeers fan collection!

1 out of 5 stars Dumas fans stay away...........2007-06-10

I'm a big Dumas fan so I was looking forward to this but;

1. The writers have taken too many liberties with the original story. If they had called it something else and not associated it with the Dumas story it would have still been dreck.

2. I'm not sure what language this is in, but I'm unable to view it in its original language with subtitles, so it sounds like a bad kung-fu movie.

3. I didn't think there could be any worse portrayal of this story when I saw the Disney/Sutherland/Sheen version until I saw the John Woo Musketeer version. Now I have seen a new low.

Avoid at all costs if you are a Dumas fan.

5 out of 5 stars School of Rock with class!.......2007-04-27

It's the quintessential school of rock story, but more about the teacher and his issues than the students themselves. Plus a love story to boot. That said I don't know that I would call this a chick flick, though it does have Robson Green (yum). It's got wonderful acting, strong story plot and people that actually fence, not actors that learned for the role (or so it appears to me). Very unique story out of the UK, that I think that everyone would enjoy.

Adapted from the Dumas classic The Three Musketeers and set in 17th-century France, The Musketeer focuses on young D'Artagnan (Justin Chambers), who revives the musketeers in a campaign against Cardinal Richelieu (Stephen Rea) and his vile henchman Febre (Tim Roth), who killed D'Artagnan's parents 14 years earlier. The heroes must rescue the abducted queen (Catherine Deneuve) and her comely confidante Francesca (Mena Suvari), with the obvious highlight being D'Artagnan and Febre's inevitable showdown, which trades "All for one, and one for all" for ludicrous swordplay on teetering ladders. The film gets a trendy boost from Hong Kong action choreographer Xin Xin Xiong (Time and Tide, Double Team), but the results are decidedly mixed. While director Peter Hyams achieves convincing period atmosphere (lighting by torch and candles, etc.), he's burdened by a lifeless script and a bland leading man. The Musketeer is lightly entertaining, but another viewing of Rob Roy will provide greater satisfaction. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best accidental comedy of all time.......2007-07-27

With its brilliantly horrible script, laughable acting, a plethora of mismatched accents, and inattention to historical detail this film has got to be the best accidental comedy I have ever seen. Justin Chambers is wonderfully adept at the wooden/monotone method of acting. The tone of his voice when he informs Mena Suvari's character Francesca of his parent's death is side-splittingly hilarious. While those parts that were actually intended to be funny fail so miserably it's ridiculous, the dramatic segments unintentionally make up for this and end up being the funniest parts of the movie. If you enjoy accidental comedy and mocking films and/or people this is the movie for you.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2007-05-23

I will not review this based on the book, as I was never a big fan of the book anyways, but on the film itself.
Mostly, I simply found most of the characters to be bland and lifeless, with the notible exception of the villian Febre, and the plot and dialogue to be fairly weak and unexciting.
The swordfighting skills displayed in the movie were dazzling, but (as another reviewer also mentioned) considering that everyone appeared almost identicle, it was a little hard to tell at times who was fighting whom. Also, while again the fight scenes were dazzling, there was no practicle reason why some of the more over the top ones were even engaged in. I am referring mostly to the fight outside the tower on ropes (why didn't someone attempt to cut D'Artagnan's rope instead of engaging him in an ariel fencing match?) and the fight on the ladders (why would Febre give up stable ground to fight D'Artagnan on unsure footing?).

1 out of 5 stars it can't get any worse than this.......2006-05-08

it's just awful. although the movie is allegedly based on a famous novel by dumas (the three musketeers), the movie violates both the spirit and the plot of the original story. There is no Milady, D'Artagnan's young lover does not die, D'Artagnan does not go on a mission to the UK, and so forth and so on.
What makes the movie truly unwatchable is not just the fact that it has little if anything to do with Dumas's masterpiece, but is the fact that the movie is phenomenally poorly scripted and equally poorly acted.
don't waste your money buying this dvd. it's not worthy. it rarely gets any worse than this.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible movie.......2006-03-26

If there were zero stars I'd give it that. The fight scenes didn't bother me or the fact it has nothing to do with the real muskateers didn't bother me. However, it has some of the worst acting I have ever done. Basically they just read there lines. School plays have better acting. This so far is the worst movie I have every seen, and I watch a lot of movies. Whatever you do, do not see this movie

4 out of 5 stars Depends on what you want........2006-01-10

If you want Dumas's original story in cinematic form, you'll be disappointed. It's been done, and done, and done again, even by Mickey Mouse. This director has chosen not to trudge down the same old rut. Instead, he's created a story parallel to and interlaced with the classic.

As long as you can take this movie for itself, it's fair entertainment. Deneuve is a lovely as ever; her mature, regal look fits the queen's role perfectly. This is a 21st century flick, so there have to be chase scenes - even though it's horse and carriage stuff, the chase scenes are completely up to date. The adventure and intrigue carry the story along well, with a comedic edge that keeps it from turning into a grim parody.

If you want a light swashbuckler, you came to the right place. If you really wanted the classic Musketeers - well, it's been done and done again. You'll just have to keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars "What's nice about hemorrhoids is, you forget the rheumatism.".......2006-10-10

I've only ever seen Sophie Marceau in English-speaking roles before, and, while I thought she was a fine actress, it wasn't until I saw her in her native French milieu that I duly became impressed. REVENGE OF THE MUSKETEERS is a Sophie Marceau vehicle all the way; the scenes are never more delightful than when she graces the screen. I enjoyed her infectious enthusiasm as she threw herself fully into the role of the headstrong, adventurous Eloise D'Artagnan. Philippe Noiret was also noteworthy as the grizzled D'Artagnan, father of Eloise, now retired in disgrace from the ranks of the Musketeers. The rest of the cast was excellent, as well, with special mention going out to Sami Frey (Aramis), Gigi Proietti (Cardinal Mazarin), and Claude Rich (Duke of Crassac).

The convent in which the young Eloise D'Artagnan is being fostered is assaulted by swordsmen led by a woman in red. The Mother Superior is murdered and, in the aftermath of the attack, Eloise finds a blooded document, which she believes is the key to uncovering a deadly plot. She goes to Paris in search of her famous father, D'Artagnan, whom she hadn't seen in years, and finds him happy to see her but disinclined to believe her tale. However, certain events occur which alter D'Artagnan's thinking, who then decides to involve his old comrades. When you add to that mix a lovestruck but combat-ignorant poet, a one-eyed spy, a duplicitous femme fatale, an ambitious duke, a conniving cardinal, a slave ring, and coffee, well, somewhere in there, there just HAS to be a conspiracy in the offing, right? Right. There is a conspiracy and it's that same old conspiracy again, namely, to assassinate the monarch of France. But, thanks to the not-quite-decrepit ex-Musketeers and the resolute Eloise - who is powered by a sense of honor and justice, even if she's a bit lacking in the finer points of fencing - the King of France is in good hands.

A bit reminiscent of Richard Lester's THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1973), the lighthearted storyline proficiently toes the line between swashbuckling and comedy. The sword fights aren't that exemplary, but the film does have an out in that the main protagonists consist of a girl raw with the sword and four curmudgeonly, even arthritic, blades. But, what they lack in speed and dexterity, they make up for in enthusiasm and elderly flair. The comedy is superb and is nicely meshed within the story. I got a kick out of the fact that each of the opposing parties come upon innocuous messages (one a laundry list, the other a poem) that they think are in secret code and end up wasting much of the movie attempting to decode them. One of the verbal high points is when Aramis is apprised of yet another plot to kill the king; he remarks with an offended "But that's so dated!" Another is when, after Sophie has the frustrated villain, Crassac, at an impasse in their deadly swordfight, he asks her if her blade was longer than his. And then, of course, there's all those elderly jokes, as offered by the aged D'Artagnan and his cohorts.

So, here's what we got: misunderstandings, behind-the-throne machinations, high adventure and swordplays, low and high-brow comedy, a father-daughter relationship, the return of classic Dumas characters, and the introduction of a lovely and fiery heroine - Eloise D'Artagnan. Which brings us full circle to Sophie Marceau. As I've said, this is her vehicle. She displays full commitment and brings beauty, unaffected charm, and unfettered zest to the table. Her Eloise doesn't mind getting muddy or physically exerting herself; she athletically jumps on and rides horses, leaps on tables, violently slings furniture, and recklessly brandishes a sword. The only thing she doesn't do is swing on chandeliers, though I have no doubt she would've done that with gusto, as well.

Note: French with English subtitles.

There's a conspiracy afoot in France that has inadvertantly spread from the Royal Court of the King into the surrounding countryside, bringing death and destruction to a distant convent. One of the residence of this religious community happens to be Eloise (Sophie Marceau), the daughter of the famous musketeer D'Artagan.

After the murder of the Reverend Mother, Eloise leaves the convent, returning to Paris to find her Father (Philippe Noiret) in the hope of convincing him to use his fighting skills to bring the culprits to justice. As you might have guessed, this turns out to be a job that will require more than one musketeer. Soon D'Artagan and Eloise are joined by Porthos (Raoul Billerey), Aramis (Sami Frey) and Athos (Jean-Luc Bideau) and the battle is on.

This was a boring movie. Instead of making an action / adventure film directors Travernier and Blossier opted for a comedy. What's worse, it wasn't funny. Watching four old men who could barely walk pretend to fight off large numbers of younger and faster foes was a real stretch of the imagination. It just didn't work at all. Too bad, because the production values were first rate.

The only real energy in this production was generated by the charming Sophie Marceau. If not for her presence this film would have been impossible for me to finish. Thanks for being there Sophie.

4 out of 5 stars D'Artagnan's Daughter In A Wonderful Swashbuckler.......2005-04-18

La Fille de D'Artagnan was a success in Europe but never got much of a release in the U.S. When the American DVD came out it had a new name, Revenge of the Musketeers. Too bad more people didn't see it. It's a great swashbuckling movie with lots of sword play, shrewd comedy, a clever story and fine acting.

It's the mid-Seventeenth Century in France. Eloise D'Artagnan (Sophie Marceau) is a young woman being educated in a convent when it is attacked and the mother superior killed. She learns there is a plot afoot, vows revenge and sets off to Paris to find her father (Philippe Noiret) and to reunite him with Athos, Aramis and Porthos. The plot thickens as they find not only evil noblemen and a cruel lady in red but that the 16-year-old king himself is in danger.

The humor and good nature of the film has a lot to do with the aging three musketeers and D'Artagnan. They've become middle aged, some a bit portly. They've all retired or resigned from the musketeers years ago. They find endless horseback riding and climbing walls no longer the easy action of their youth. Yet although they might get a bit tired sword fighting, they still are the best around...which they prove on ship decks, in castle hallways, and on Paris roofs.

Sophie Marceau does a wonderful job as the passionate and funny Eloise. She has no desire to simply wear skirts and get married as her father wishes. She's devoted to the idea of justice and righting the wrongs that have been committed. She loves her father and is proud of his comrades. She also finds she often has to protect the poet who loves her. He may write wonderful verse, but he can't use a sword and can barely ride a horse. Marceau throws herself into the role. Eloise may not be the best sword fighter around (she has plans for lessons from her father), but she energetically skewers those who try to confront her. Marceau leaps onto tables and horses, and also manages to land on her bottom in the mud and the dirt. She's an actress who is not afraid to get dirty or look disheveled.

This is an amusing movie with a lot of sword play. Marceau and Noiret are great. I liked it a lot. The DVD picture and audio are fine and the yellow subtitles are easy to read.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Silly Fun!.......2003-12-05

The whole premise behind the 570 musketeer films that have been released thus far (Dec. 2003) is pretty flimsy, and the premise behind this one is among the flimsiest. BUT--for people who like to watch adventure-comedies in which beautiful women kick butt, this belongs on your shelf beside the CHARLIE'S ANGELS films. The chief advantage this film has over other members of this genre is that it stars the ever-adorable Sophie Marceau. We get to see her fence with evil-doers and have a tender moment or two with her aging father, the famous D'Artagnan. The script is better than average, and the film contains many other scenes that are enjoyable in various ways. Finally, if you happen to like "musketeer films," this one is far better than the half dozen big-budget productions that have come out of Hollywood in the past few years. (Sorry, Leonardo. Yours stank, despite its high-powered cast.)

3 out of 5 stars Marceau Carries The Day.......2001-04-27

The spirit of Dumas is alive and well as D'Artagnan and his three legendary companions regroup and once again go forth in defense of the Crown in "Revenge of the Musketeers," directed by Bertrand Tavernier. This time around, however, it's D'Artagnan's daughter, Eloise (Sophie Marceau), who sounds the alarm after witnessing a cold-blooded murder at the convent she has called home these many years, having been raised there while her father was off on one adventure after another in service to the King. And it's the King for whom Eloise is concerned; in the wake of the murder, she has uncovered a conspiracy to assassinate the about-to-be-crowned Louis XIV during his coronation. Her evidence is a cryptic message discovered among the personal effects of the recently deceased resident of the convent. So throwing caution to the wind, Eloise takes to horseback, alone, to seek out her father and inform him of this threat to France and the King. What she doesn't know is that D'Artagnan (Philippe Noiret) has recently withdrawn from the service of the King, and not by his own choosing. It seems that the King-to-be is something of an upstart, the fact of which D'Artagnan conveyed to him personally-- in no uncertain terms-- after which the now former Musketeer retired to private life to give lessons in the art of swordsmanship. All of which is about to change with the arrival of the daughter he hasn't seen for many years, and who to his knowledge is still safely ensconced in the convent.

To successfully present yet another episode of "The Three Musketeers," it must have that certain sense of bold carelessness born of confidence and larger-than-life adventure, and Tavernier's film has it. Though it takes a couple of scenes to find it's legs after an intense opening that makes you sit up and take notice, when it finally kicks in (which it does fairly quickly) it becomes a rousing adventure steeped in the tradition of it's predecessors. And, as in the best of the "Musketeer" movies, it's laced with subtle humor and intrigue. Tavernier sets a pace that is at times inconsistent, but he provides enough action and fun that it can be easily overlooked; it may threaten to stall occasionally, but never actually does.

Philippe Noiret cuts a striking figure as the aging D'Artagnan, who though slowed somewhat by the years, is still one of the best swords around. He successfully embodies that spirit and sense of "legend" that makes his D'Artagnan believable, and delivers it all with the confidence befitting his character.

The highlight of the film, however, is the lovely Marceau, who as Eloise proves that she can cross swords with the best of them. Her technique with a blade may be a bit awkward at times, but it gives credibility to the character; a young woman raised in a convent-- even the daughter of a famed Musketeer-- wouldn't necessarily be a master swordsman. And Marceau gives a lively performance as Eloise, diving into the action with a reckless abandon that makes her endearing, as well as fun to watch. She has a radiant screen presence that draws the eye to her, even in a crowded scene. But what really puts this character across-- and again, the entire film, for that matter-- is that unabashed spirit of adventure, which Marceau manifests in Eloise.

The supporting cast includes Claude Rich (Crassac), Sami Frey (Aramis), Jean-Luc Bideau (Athos), Raoul Billerey (Porthos), Charlotte Kady (Eglantine de Rochefort), Nils Tavernier (Quentin), Luigi Proietti (Mazarin) and Jean-Paul Roussillon (Planchet). Proving that even Musketeers beyond their prime can be engaging, especially when combined with a spirited beauty like Marceau, "Revenge of the Musketeers" is a welcome cinematic chapter in the saga Dumas began so many years ago. In the end, it's a satisfying experience that will transport you to another place and another time, when chivalry was alive and well, and right always triumphed over wrong.
