Description
His films have been called raw, outrageous, sensational, and daring. In four decades of directing, Samuel Fuller created a legendarily idiosyncratic oeuvre, examining U.S. history and mythmaking in westerns, film noirs, and war epics. And characteristically, it all began with a bang: after printing the legend with the elegant B-pictures I Shot Jesse James and The Baron of Arizona, he got himself into hot water with the FBI on The Steel Helmet, the first American movie to portray the Korean War. These three independent films showed off Fuller's genre diversity, gutter wit, and subversive force, and pointed the way to a controversial career in studio moviemaking.
I Shot Jesse James
Fuller's directorial debut is a psychological western, excavating, with pathos and humor, the tale of Robert Ford, the member of Jesse James's gang who shot the famed outlaw in the back.
The Baron of Arizona A devilishly witty Vincent Price plays a nineteenth-century con man who sets out to commit the most epic swindle in U.S. history: to claim himself as the rightful inheritor of Arizona.
The Steel Helmet With its low budget and high ambitions, Fuller's snarling Korean War film, an examination of race relations as well as a visceral plunge into battle, remains one of the director's most discussed and admired works.

With his trademark happy hair and spirited band comes Dan Zanes in his first-ever DVD, a concert/video collection of sing along melodies blending rock, folk, and global rhythms into a homespun musical menagerie. Formerly with the Del Fuegos band and riding on the success of seven CDs, Zanes presents All Around the Kitchen! featuring nine musical selections performed live in concert at New York's Knitting Factory. Whether familiar songs such as "Hokey Pokey" and "Polly Wolly Doodle," or lesser known numbers like "Malti," Zanes takes traditional music, winsomely turns it on its head, and adds such diverse instruments as accordion, banjo, upright bass, mandolin, and ukulele. On the program's alternative track, viewers can choose among a half dozen music videos pulsating with kids, street scenes, dancing, singing, and jubilant acoustics. There is "House Party Time," "All Around the Kitchen," and "Hello" as seen on Noggin, as well as "Jump Up" and "Go Down Emmanuel Road" performed on Sesame Street. Zanes' soulful musicians, contagious enthusiasm, and all-inclusive approach to music make this a song-and-dance fest where everyone finds a voice. (All ages) --Lynn Gibson

Dan Zanes & Friends.......2007-08-23
The video was OKAY. My daughter wasn't interested or amused after the first few minutes. If your'e really looking for a great sing and dance vidoes to keep your infant/toddler excited try The Lauri Berkner Band.
SO much fun!.......2007-08-11
I just love this band! My 2 1/2 year old daughter and I dance around and sing to this dvd every day. I love that they use instruments you don't hear every day. I love that their music is upbeat and happy and very eclectic. I love that this video is simple and not a huge production but mostly I love that these people seem to really enjoy making music together. That energy reaches out and grabs you. We can't wait until Dan Zanes and Friends tour our town!
not what i hoped for.......2007-07-23
Unfortunatley I bought this for my 2 yr old nephew, and he does not like it at all. My sister said he walked away from it 1/2 way thru a song, she said it was too hippyish . I heard this guy Dan Zanes was great. Still have not listened to it myself. Maybe my nephew is just to active for this.
visually dull.......2007-05-25
The concert and videos are not visually appealing for the young ones. The image quality and footage of concert is a VERY small step above amateur. If your child is a fan of the colorful Dan Zanes videos on TV, this video is not the same.
Great Video.......2007-05-10
My 2 1/2 yr. old loves to dance around to this video and I enjoy watching it with her. It's a little bit hip (so you don't feel like you are watching Barney) but still kid friendly.

Spectacular cinematography used in an innovative framework featuring noted actor and native Egyptian Omar Sharif provide a highly entertaining glimpse of ancient Egypt in this documentary from National Geographic. Sharif, playing a grandfather who is explaining the archeological wonders to his inquisitive granddaughter, does a fine job of explaining such puzzles as how the pyramids would have been built and what knowledge their builders must have possessed. The interludes between grandfather and granddaughter are handled well, but the star of the production is Egypt itself. Gorgeously composed shots linger over the pyramids, the Sphinx, and a plethora of temples, and a camera flown over the Nile provides stunning footage of the great river's meanderings. Reenactments of events, such as the building of the pyramids, the burial of King Tut, and the 1922 opening of his tomb, are presented intelligently. This production is sure to spark curiosity about ancient Egypt, and even without the careful handling of the history it would probably be worth watching just for the wondrous cinematography. A bonus at the end of the tape is a making-of documentary detailing how the film was shot on location. --Robert J. McNamara

Ancient Egyptian History in Overview.......2007-07-20
The narration is by a grandfather (Omar Sharif) to his grandaughter. He
tells a simple story of the history of ancient Egypt.
The images are awesome and of IMAX quality, and the music
is lovely.
The Nile is followed from its beginning as it encounters water
falls, rapids, river wildlife, many gorgeous views of ancient ruins.
There are some reinactments and computer special effects located throughout.
The dramatization of the discovery of King Tut's tomb by
Howard Carter is well done (portrayed in black and white).
I wish it had been a little longer! I recommend it to anyone who
likes IMAX DVDs.
Excellent children's documentary........2005-05-02
This is a favorite DVD in our house. It has stunning camera work, wonderful information and an excellent narrative. It portrays the glory of Ancient Egypt and the pride modern Egyptians still feel towards their heritage.
Like all Imax documentaries it's only 40 minutes long and written at a fourth grade level. If you have a problem with those preconditions, don't watch Imax. We're homeschoolers and we love it. My children pay close attention, break out the Legos and start building pyramids of their own.
Bit Disappointed - Hardly any "Mysteries of Egypt" to see.......2005-04-05
This was an excellent documentary on Egypt, with stunning footages and photography. But if you are looking for real Mysteries of Egypt and the investigative report on them, this surely is not the video you shall look for. From historical point of view and general overview of ancient Egypt, it certainly is a good one.
The title is rather misleading......
Wonderful Piece: Great Visually, and Performance.......2005-02-26
This must have been excellent in IMAX.
The combination of the wrap arounds done by Shariff ( sp? ) and a lesser actress, work superbly with this very good general introduction to Ancient Egypt.
I think even the Omnipresent Zahwi Hawass ( Sp?) makes an appearance in this work. If ever a man straddles the line between a godlike omnipresence, and amazing self-promotion, Zahwi achieves this, but despite that, its a great watch, and a useful addendum to any collection if you want to start a collection about egypt.
Outstanding Intro to Ancient Egypt.......2004-10-21
This is the best educational introduction to Ancient Egypt I've ever seen and used with middle school aged kids. The story is introduced and narrated by Omar Shariff to his fictional American granddaughter (a famous actress I'm not familiar with), who wants to know about "The Mummy's Curse". The writing/narration was outstanding throughout--I'd call it almost poetic in many spots. The photography, being IMAX, was, of course, eye-popping. In fact, I had to force myself to concentrate on the narration so absorbed did I become with the beautiful images.
This movie is set around the famous discovery of Tutankamen's tomb by Howard Carter in the 1920s and, again, is beautifully done. The Carter scenes are in black-in-white and evoke a wonderful 1920s feel. They also serve to heighten appreciation for the incredible beauty of Egypt when the film cuts back to full color. Worked into the story line are the obligatory shots of the pyramids and even some computer enhanced scenes to briefly show their construction. Add to all that an exquisite soundtrack. The negative reviews are surprising to me. I 'd love to know of the documentaries those reviewers have seen about Ancient Egypt that they feel are better. I sure haven't seen them. If they exist I'll be first in line to buy them.

Far above "The Untouchables".......2002-07-15
Unfairly accused of being a shameless HK "The Untouchables" clone, First Shot rises far above the almost comic book feel of its supposed source material.
The story of the fight against widespread corruption in the Hong Kong police hierarchy in the 1970's, this film stars the estimable Ti Lung as "Tamerlane", an unflinchingly honest cop. Tamerlane is shot in the neck by one of his own men for his refusal to overlook the corruption of his colleagues.
After his release from the hospital, he is approached by Maggie Chung's Annie Ma who has been deputized to pursue and prosecute corrupt cops on the HK police force.
Assembling a group of fellow "incorruptibles"--including, paradoxically the very officer that shot him (Simon Yam's Sam Mok)--repentant and reformed Tamerlane and his secret squad go after "Faucet" (Waise Lee Chi Hung)--the triad boss who is the financial source of the widespread bribery, murder and mayhem.
The cast is universally excellent--Ti Lung is a strong, dignified--yet haunted Tamerlane. Maggie Chung is a strong female presence, the focal point who holds the group together when tragedy and treachery threaten its existence. Simon Yam has never been more appealing as the tormented but ultimately heroic Sam and Waise Lee Chi Hung plays the evil Faucet to chilling perfection.
For a compelling look into an anti-corruption squad with a story every bit as compelling as Ness's crew--forgo the big screen "Untouchables" and give "First Shot" a watch. You won't be disappointed.
Funny , action-packed HK flick.......2002-03-17
Ti Lung does it again with a terrific performance as a cop who
is wronged by corruption. The actor who protrayed the main crime boss is the kind of guy you love to hate (I think he was Sheng from A Better Tomorrow Part 1).
Anyway , on to the technical aspect. The subtitling is built into the picture and is a so-so legible quality. Half the time , some of subtitles are outside the viewable area , so I just zoomed out using my dvd remote. The subtitles are also replete with spelling and grammatical errors.
The sound quality is okay (though mono). It's better than some fake 5.1 mixes i've seen. The picture quality shows its age but is workable. For people who can speak Mandarin , there is a Mandarin dub.
The extras are rather lousy. They have a trailer for First Shot and some other flick. There's also some bios but nothing too fancy.
Bottom line , definetly worth a rental if you like HK action movies or Ti Lung. The main theme alone is worth a listen.
Solid, if unspectacular HK cop movie.......2001-03-26
Not electrifying by any means, but definitely a solid picture of police corruption in HK circa 1970. Ti Lung can do no wrong, literally, in his starring role. Simon Yam is fine as the bad-turned-good savior. Waise Lee comes through as the evil kingpin, and Ti Lung's 2 sidekicks turn in admirable roles, each with some flavor (one a Bruce Lee devotee, the other a vain gunman.) Yes, it is a very familiar Untouchables story, but told well, and with no plot holes or ridiculous moments. Well, one scene in a gay bar really pushes the boundaries of good taste, but it's over quick enough, and acts as decent comic relief. Though the film is formulaic, it will hold your attention throughout. There is some gunplay, some martial arts combat, and plenty of fast-paced action throughout. It keeps up a brisk pace, with some wry comedic bits (some of which are actually funny) and ends how it begins: predictably solid. Not an A, but a solid B of an HK cop movie.
Unoriginal, but action filled.......2001-03-25
Like much modern Hong Kong cinema, this film is wildly unoriginal, but has just enough action to keep you watching to the end. An accomplished cast makes the ride easier, but you have to wonder why so much talent appears in a film that cannot be described as anything more than mediocre.
